people in it. Wealthy doesn’t necessarily refer only to the amount in the bank, but to the attitude and belief of abundance and prosperity, the ability to share were important for me; the more important realization, however, was that I was
worthy of a partner with these qualities. This takes open hearts. This takes
order to trust another, and we must love ourselves in order to love another. The thriving marriages I know are always open to and have sought outside support from therapists, counselors, relationship coaches and clergy. Happy marriage lesson No. 1: be open to support. This magazine is full of incredible resources.
When we are in love with ourselves and our own life, we attract others who are authentically happy. Knowing ourselves allows us to see clearly who would and would not work as a partner for us, and knowing our real needs along with our
limits can prevent a lot of heartache and grief. Building our own foundation of self love allows us to love our partner deeply, and trusting ourselves allows us
to trust others. Loving ourselves means we are gentle with ourselves and take care of ourselves emotionally, physically, spiritually and financially. “Me time” is a priority, and we know how to take it. When we have a strong sense of self
and connection, we are able to set boundaries and make requests rather than
demands. The more conscious I am of who I AM and the more connected I AM with myself, the more capable I AM of connecting with my partner.
We want to be blissful brides and wives, don’t we? If you find yourself behaving
like a bridezilla, that is a signal you are disconnected. Check in with yourself and ask: Why the desperation and fear? Why the need to control every detail? What
am I really needing? (The answer is always more self love.) Am I getting enough exercise and sleep? Am I eating right? Am I feeling connected with my partner?
Do we need a date night for intimacy to get back to our love and the purpose of our union?
Ask yourself “Who AM I?” and make your “I AM” list – this will guide you to your
dream wedding and partnership. You deserve it. You are worthy of having it. Say “I AM” before you say “I DO!”

Enjoy & Plan with Peace of Mind by Joan Krueger Congratulations! You are planning your wedding. This is one of the most beautiful times of your life – but it can also be one of the most stressful, not only for the bride, but also for the groom, the attendants and the families. Everyone feels such a tremendous pressure to make everything perfect. Realistically, this world and the people in it aren't perfect – that is where hypnosis can help. Brides and everyone else associated with the wedding want to look their best but may not be at their ideal weight. Nail biting, skin picking and hair pulling can be issues for people as well. Hypnosis can get your mind focused on your goal and increase your willpower. It can make achieving your goal easier and much more doable because it actually helps your mind work in a new way with regard to that issue. Frequently, the planning and the desire for perfection can be so stressful that couples don't get to enjoy the process, and it may even keep them from enjoying the wedding itself. Occasionally tempers will flare. Hypnosis is a wonderfully relaxing state, which can help to create a perspective where you are focused on all the things that truly matter.

Often, people have a fear of speaking in public or even being in front of groups of people. Toasting the bride and groom or doing readings during the ceremony can be very difficult if this is the case – hypnosis is one of the quickest ways to eliminate that fear. Your conscious mind contains your active thoughts, and your subconscious mind contains information that you act on. The subconscious is like a big filing cabinet that holds a record of everything you've ever experienced – all of your habits, behaviors, responses, reactions, memories and emotions are stored there, as though there is a file for each. Hypnosis is the process of communicating with the subconscious mind. Before your session, I would ask specifically what you want to change – this identifies the file that you are currently working from. Hypnosis opens up the subconscious part of your mind so that a new file can be added about how you want to function. After the session, your mind has new information to begin to work from instead of working from the old information. Hypnosis can help make your wedding planning truly happy!

Bee Hopeful, Bee Inspired, Bee Beautiful
The question Ellie Hock Richter, Urban Nectar creator, is asked most frequently is: “So why beekeeping and nail polish?” Her answer isn’t too complicated – she likes both. The explanation for how exactly she became involved with beekeeping and nail polish, however, is a little more complicated. In 2010, Ellie’s mom, Sarah, was diagnosed with Glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive brain cancer. She lived for 15 months after her diagnosis, and after her passing, Ellie fell into beekeeping as an attempt at emotional healing and to keep herself busy. She attended classes, read books, and met with beekeepers in the St. Louis area. Beekeeping was simply beautiful, Ellie said. It became her “something positive” in a life that had recently been chaotic and deeply sad with the illness and passing of her mother. As Ellie’s mom underwent radiation and chemotherapy, her hair was in flux from various treatments and medicines. Manicures and pedicures were something the two could enjoy together, even on Sarah’s low-energy days. Ellie merged her new love for beekeeping with the manicures and pedicures she enjoyed with her mom during Sarah’s hospice care – and out of this emerged Urban Nectar.
Urban Nectar is a line of 20 eco-friendly nail polish colors inspired by beekeeping, honeybees and the plants they pollinate. Urban Nectar nail polish is vegan, does not contain animal products, and is not tested on animals. It was important to Ellie to create a product that individuals could wear in and out of the hospital – for those who need to remove nail polish quickly for surgery or treatment, Urban Nectar is quick to remove, as it is not a gel polish; but for those who do not need to remove it quickly, it is a long-lasting lacquer. Urban Nectar nail polish does not contain Formaldehyde, Toluene, Dibutylphthalate (DBP), Camphor, or Triphenyl Phosphate (TPHP).
beekeeping friends, as well as customers. Urban Nectar has opened a platform for Ellie to connect with other individuals who have similar experiences with beekeeping and cancer. To check our their products, visit Urban Nectar at www.stlurbannectar.org
Twenty-five cents from every bottle of Urban Nectar nail polish sold is donated to the Cancer Support Community Center of Greater St. Louis, an organization that provides counseling and programing to individuals with cancer as well as their family members. It is an important organization to Ellie’s family, as both her mom and her aunt attended its programs before their passing. The one thing that Ellie appreciates the most from her experience with Urban Nectar are the relationships she has developed with Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2016

Flawless Skin Lynn Schroeder started her own business a little over four years ago. She always secretly imagined herself one day opening a coffee shop or an antique store (two of her passions) or a combination of both, but she never ever imagined she would make a career out of a network marketing business. Initially she had very negative feelings about network marketing, but that was because of her lack of knowledge about the industry. Not long after she started her business, Lynn learned that the key to wealth is “horizontal.” To break that down… Wealth comes horizontally with multiple streams of income, including residual income. Residual income means that one can stop working, but the wealth will keep coming, therefore allowing said individual to leave a legacy for those he or she loves long after he or she is 22

gone. For Lynn, the company she chose to do this with is Rodan + Fields. Rodan + Fields was started by the doctors who created Proactiv. They originally launched their products in high-end retail, but with the downturn of the economy coupled with the rise in social media and the results of their customer surveys in 2008, they decided to take this business to what they call a “virtual franchise” or “social economy” business. The awards and accolades haven’t stopped since Rodan + Fields began. It is one of the fastest growing companies in the U.S., and it is currently the fourth largest behind the likes of Estee Lauder, Lancome and Clinique. Rodan + Fields products are second to none and deliver results, Lynn says.
Try our 4 amazing regimens that work on the 4 main skin concerns...aging, sun-damaged, acne-prone, and sensitive skin Before joining Rodan + Fields, Lynn was a teacher by trade. Nine years into her career she decided to stay home with her newly born twin boys; her family grew by one more three years later when she and her husband welcomed their last boy into the mix. It was then that she decided to put her teaching career on hold indefinitely. She eventually went from a stay-at-home mom to a homeschool mom, which she did for the next nine years. When Lynn and her husband enrolled their sons into a private school five years ago, she knew it was time to find a job so she could help with tuition and all the other expenses that come with having a family. After no success finding a job in the classroom due to overqualification, Lynn was introduced to Rodan + Fields. When she realized the potential the company had and that it was ultimately up to her to decide how much money she would make, Lynn jumped on board. The idea of time flexibility and financial freedom was what she was truly after.

Lynn now has many happy customers and a team of over 2000 representatives. She has replaced her full-time teaching salary numerous times over. By working 15 to 20 hours a week, she can be present in her family’s lives, which has been a huge bonus for Lynn since family has always been so important to her. This business has make Lynn dig deeper on a personal level, given her confidence, shown her that she has leadership skills and allowed her to dream again. It has been a 100 percent blessing to Lynn and her family, she says, and she knows that God has been, and still is, up to something bigger than she can imagine with Rodan +Fields. Lynn loves sharing the gift of Rodan + Fields with others. If you want to take control of your finances and get your time and freedom back, please let her know – she has the answer for you and would love to help! Health, Wellness & Adventure at El Conquistador
by Karyn Andrade
Palomino Island offers an array of water and recreational activities
30
Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2016
El Conquistador in Fajardo, Puerto Rico offers a wellness retreat designed to revive the mind, body and spirit that includes a variety of classes, activities and spa treatments. The resort overlooks the converging Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean from a 300-foot bluff next to the nearby fishing village of Las Croabas. The 500 acres of this tropical paradise property includes 750 redesigned guest rooms and the Las Casitas Village (luxury one-, two- and three- bedroom villas with full kitchens and options for a 24-hour butler service), a Waldorf Astoria Spa, an Arthur Hills 18-hole golf course, and the recently opened Coquí Water Park. The Waldorf Astoria Wellness Retreats incorporate themes around nature's four elements: Earth, Water, Fire & Air. We were offered the "Earth" themed retreat. Upon arrival, participants receive a comprehensive fitness appraisal and physical assessment before taking part in a variety of classes and activities, including a mountain trek, twilight yoga class, rainforest hike, and a meditative labyrinth walk, as well as related spa treatments.
hike had us exploring mountain paths through lush tropical plants with leaves as big as elephant ears. Delicious, healthy lunches were packed in insulated backpacks for everyone to picnic at leisure while we took time to refresh and swim under a forest waterfall. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the indigenous history and landscape and even offered to paint ancient symbol tattoos on our arms using sticks and red mud from the riverbed.
Palamino Island Our first morning we were ferried over to El Conquistador's private Palomino Island, offering an array of water and recreational activities – not to mention wild 5-foot long prehistoric iguanas that ate orange slices out of our hands! After a brisk sun-drenched mountain trek we were treated to a delicious raw foods “Lunch & Learn” farm-totable meal, during which we enjoyed a variety of hydroponic lettuces for our salad that had come directly from the Hydroponic Garden on the property. We were also told about the additional green initiatives El Conquistador had enacted to become ecologically conscious and sustainable. Highlights include resourced treated water for golf course and lawn irrigation, locally harvested ingredients from their on-site greenhouse and herb garden, biodegradable products, and sustainable tea, which paired perfectly with the organic, locally harvested honey served at the resort. Our lunch concluded with the pastry chef teaching us her fabulous recipe for "Coconut and Pineapple Kisses" and then inviting us to make our own raw deserts.
El Yunque National Rainforest Our third day was spent discovering the natural wonders of the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. – El Yunque National Rainforest. The full morning

“The wellness retreat is an opportunity to discover and address your whole state of being”
32
Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2016
Salon & Spa The earth theme of our wellness retreat continued at the spa with a "Rainforest Hot Stone Massage," which incorporated warm rainforest stones being placed onto key energy points to transfer heat and essential oils into the skin, restoring balance and harmony. It was a glorious afternoon spent at the spa, which included a eucalyptus-infused steam room, waterfall Jacuzzi and some quiet time to pause and visit with friends in the Organic Tea lounge before hustling off to the full-service Edouard de Paris salon for a quick pedicure to prepare our toes for the barefoot meditative walk on the outdoor labyrinth the following morning at sunrise.
Laguna Grande - Bioluminescent Bay Tour They definitely saved the fireworks for the last night... although instead of above, they were below us in the water! As the Caribbean sky darkened, our group loaded into kayaks two by two and paddled out on the water where we were led through a pitch-black mangrove channel. There was a childish sense of joy and wonder as we made our way through the lagoon, giggling with our kayaks bumping into each other like kids playing bumper cars. Eventually, we arrived at Laguna Grande – a Bioluminescent Bay where we were able to witness the fascinating natural phenomenon of "Pyrodinium Bahamense,” which is a microscopic plankton capable of producing natural light. Glowing blue sparkles of bioluminescent organisms exploded everywhere as our kayak paddles or hands moved through the water. Truly magical!
Ideal Wedding Venue & Conference Center El Conquistador also offers a fully-equipped conference center with over 100,000 square feet of flexible indoor/ outdoor space, making it the perfect venue for a corporate meeting, customized special event, or wedding. With the Island of Enchantment as your backdrop, the staff specializes in tailoring every aspect for your special day, including personalized catering menus, music and flowers. All of our meals were customized specially for our group and set up in different surprise settings throughout the breathtaking property. It felt like a movable feast! Everything was beyond divine in both presentation and flavor, and Executive Chef Ernie Reyes was always present to further elaborate on the delicious creations. One of my romantic favorites was the interactive coconut ice cream station during our last dinner on the beach – fresh ice cream was created before our eyes out of a plume of smoke as we sat under the moonlit palm trees. The spa director said it best: "The wellness retreat is an opportunity to discover and address your whole state of being – to reflect, to reconnect, and to reignite within yourself." I am eternally grateful to have such a fun and joyous memory that simultaneously motivates me to incorporate many healthy aspects into my daily life – deep meditative breaths, laughter, friendship, a bit of silence and stillness, consciousness about the food we eat, and an effort to learn a little more about the universe around us and the universe within. MICHELE HEIZER/ BEAUTYCOUNTER Michele Heizer is a consultant with Beautycounter. Like many of you, she has been touched by the effects of harmful chemicals. Her grandfather, grandmother and mother-inlaw each died of cancer. Her grandmother had actually been a survivor of thyroid and breast cancers but died later in life from chronic leukemia. Michele’s mother is a cancer survivor, and one of her longest childhood friends is a lung cancer survivor…even though she was never a smoker. Michele’s oldest son has Autism, and her youngest has attention issues. She doesn’t stand alone. We have all been touched in some way by chemicals that have been linked to many of our health issues today, such as cancer, hormone disruption, fertility issues, Autism, Asthma, ADD and many others. What is sad is that many people simply don’t know what they don’t know. They believe our products are safe. But Michele is here to tell you they are not. Michele joined with Beautycounter because Beautycounter is dedicated to radical transparency in the beauty industry. You will never find any ingredient in Beautycounter’s products that are known to be harmful to human health. We should never have to compromise our health in the name of beauty, but sadly that is what has been asked of us. Beautycounter is creating a movement to safer beauty because it as a company feels it’s time for a change. Beautycounter is creating a business to change the system because we deserve better. Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues like the ones listed above (including, but not limited to asthma, learning disabilities, cancer and infertility) are on the rise, and due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals— whether it's in the shower, on our commute, while we eat lunch at a local restaurant, or when we clean our kitchens at home. There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today, and many don't have any safety data. This is particularly true of those used in the skin care and beauty industry—only about 10 percent of the 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products have safety data.

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2016
What's worse is the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics) allows companies to use chemicals known to be extremely harmful (lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates) in the products we put on our bodies and on our kids every single day, day after day. IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE.
The United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938. The European Union has spent the past two decades banning or restricting more than 1,400 ingredients, while the U.S. has only banned 11 to date. WE DESERVE BETTER, AND BEAUTYCOUNTER IS DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Beautycounter has banned more than 1,500 ingredients, setting a new health and safety standard—all while ensuring its products perform, and that they're as indulgent as any luxe shampoo, lipstick or oil in the market. It's not easy work, Michele says, but it's well worth it. Beautycounter is about progress— not perfection. Because every little bit counts. Michele encourages each of us to learn more about the impact the environment is having on our health and the health of those we love. You know more, so now you can do better. Now you can join with Beautycounter to move the needle in the right direction, so that one day our children will no longer have to read ingredients to know that their beauty products are safe. Michele Heizer beautycounter.com/micheleheizer bcmichele@icloud.com
BEAUTYCOUNTER’S MISSION IS SIMPLE: To get safe products into the hands of everyone.

Everyone is busy…work, kids, sports, family…you get what I'm saying. As the day starts to wrap up, all of a sudden you are left with the never-ending question: what’s for dinner? Ugh! Who wants to run to the grocery store at 4 p.m. and figure out on the fly what you are going to make that night? Instead, we end up ordering pizza or take out. I am a firm believer in preparing easy, nourishing meals for my family at least four times a week. Beyond the satisfaction of making healthier choices and knowing exactly what is going into our bodies, we are also improving our lives by slowing down each evening. In the time it takes to have pizza delivered, you can have a new family favorite on the table; it just takes a little planning. How many times a week do you run to the store for just a couple of things? Instead, pick a few new recipes, plan what you'll be having, hit all the grocery stores at once and be done for the week. Take the time you would typically spend “running out” to PREPARE what you ALREADY have! With a little planning, you can prepare 30-minute meals for your family, which you can then sit down and enjoy together, building tradition and healthy habits and even saving money. Making a grocery list over the weekend will allow you to plan out at least three dinners for the week. You’ll only have to make one run to the store and get everything you will need, always stocking up on fresh veggies and protein. When buying protein, don’t just think about it for one meal, but instead think about repurposing it for lunches for you or for your kids, snacks or another dinner. Buy 10 chicken breasts at a time! You could have chicken stir fry one night, then make chicken parmesan a few days later, or add
the extra chicken to salads for a filling lunch. Spring is the perfect time to start making these habits for your family. Home-cooked meals do not need to be difficult or take a lot of time to prepare to be delicious and healthy. Visit my website, www.kleanandlean.com for my klean&lean red sauce recipe that takes no time to prepare and can be used for tomato soup, sauce for turkey meatballs, dipping sauce, and chicken parm. You will be amazed at the freedom you will feel and the time you will save with just a little planning! Monica Koch (owner of klean&lean) has been in the fitness industry for 30 years and has developed her own innovative technique that takes you out of your comfort zone. She is a certified personal trainer, instructor for group fitness classes, a food and fitness motivator and the Health & Fitness Editor for Yoga & Spa Magazine. A native of St. Louis, owner Andrea LaRondelle spent the last 15 years in California, where she practiced Pilates while working in the corporate world as the Vice President of Operations for a well-known weight loss company. Andrea discovered Club Pilates in 2008 when she started taking classes at the only Club Pilates studio that existed at that time...Founder, Allison Beardsley's studio in San Diego. She was hooked, knowing that this modern, fun style of Pilates was what she had been looking for! In 2014, as a devoted client for the previous 6 years, she completed the 500 hour Club Pilates Teacher Training program and joined the Club Pilates corporate team as the Senior Vice President of Operations, with plans to transition into business ownership and open her own studios under the Club Pilates Franchise. Upon realizing that the Club Pilates concept is exactly what the St. Louis area has been missing, Andrea knew she had to return to her hometown, bringing the best thing to happen to Pilates with her!! Founded in 2007 with one Pilates studio in sunny San Diego, Club Pilates has grown into the nation's largest and fastest-growing Pilates franchise, offering several Signature class formats, including Reformer Pilates, Springboard, EXO Chair, Barre and TRX Suspension Training to fit the needs of all clients - from young to more senior, and from beginner to advanced. They offer classes 7 days a week - mornings, afternoons and evenings. Club Pilates was the first Pilates studio to create a 500 hour Teacher Training Program, designed to train instructors on how to thoroughly and safely teach group Pilates apparatus classes that flow. The Club Pilates team has spent countless hours studying, training, teaching and practicing Pilates. And over that time, they have perfected their unique and proprietary approach to ensuring every Club Pilates member receives the finest training and most effective results. They call this approach the Club Pilates Method: • The widest array of classes available anywhere, designed to challenge students at every level and target exactly what you want to work on most. • Brand new, state of the art equipment in every studio, including not just Reformers, but an entire array of Pilates tools: the Chair, the Springboard, the Barre, and the TRX Training System. You’ll get a complete Pilates workout, every time. • The best value in Pilates, with unexpectedly low prices that allow you to dedicate yourself to Pilates for life. At Club Pilates, they believe Pilates is the finest strength-training workout available for anyone, at any age. It’s a path to a fuller, richer, healthier and more satisfying life. The functional strength and flexibility you will gain at Club Pilates won’t just benefit you while you’re exercising. It will become the key to living a happier, healthier and more fulfilling life. MEN on the MAT by Sean Miller Yoga & Spa Magazine is happy to continue our Men on the Mat feature with one of St. Louis most interesting and well versed yoga instructors, Mr. Jaime Sanches of the Healing Arts Center. Jaime’s passion is to understand what yoga really is in order to teach and live the lifestyle. His parents introduced him to yoga in South America in 1962 at eight years old. He has been practicing yoga for over 50 years. As you can see in the photos here, it has served him well. Jaimie’s occupation is Natural Medicine, Chinese Medicine and Yoga Teacher Trainings. His other hobbies are family, travel, yoga, meditation and friendship. Jaime has learned the Solar, Iyengar and Sivananda methods in courses in North America, South America and Spain. He has extensively studied yoga philosophy and Sanskrit. His yoga teacher training is an internationally recognized certification course which is registered with the Yoga Alliance. Jaime is passionate about teaching the skills necessary to practice yoga. Jaime has been a naturopath since 1995. He studied acupuncture in mainland China with Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He became a yoga teacher in Venezuela in 1967. He taught yoga for 10 years at Saint Louis University and Christian Hospital. Erik Fakes started yoga after googling flexibility. He was looking for an exercise program that would loosen him up and help his golf game. Bikram yoga came up on his internet search. After reading a description, he had to try it. The heat and length of the class intrigued him. It's hard to narrow down the best things about this practice as the whole process is life changing. The single most thing he loves about yoga is how it has taught him to recognize his inner dialogue when he is away from the mat. He is now conscious of his thought process. Through the control of his thoughts, he has gained control of his life. Erik also delivers delicious pizza for Maplewood Imo's. Besides yoga, he enjoys golf, reading, walking his dog and lifting weights.
Brandon Dempsey is an adventurer and entrepreneur. He owns a marketing firm in St. Louis called goBRANDgo! and is the Author of Shut Up and Go!. He spends his time motorcycling around the world with his wife on a BMW Motorcycle and playing with their 3 dogs. After a major back injury in 2015 while training for his fourth Ironman, Brandon “found” yoga on Youtube looking for relief. Joining Namaste Yoga Studio in November 2015, “I found what I needed to grow mentally and physically. Yoga gives me the energy and mental focus I need to operate at my best.”

Grief Yoga – Moving into EMPOWERMENT by Paul Denniston Grief is a reaction to the pain we feel when we lose or become separated from someone — or something — that we love. Dealing with the pain of grief can drain our energy and change the rhythm in our lives forever, especially if we don't know how to move forward toward healing. Because grief affects us mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually, yoga can be a saving grace by allowing the doing mind to soften into a place of being. In this process, thoughts and feelings that were difficult to articulate begin to surface. In grief, we tend to either get stuck in the past or get too caught up in our fears and anxieties about the future. Yoga is a pathway to the present, and as we become present within the body, our wounds of sadness, judgment, and abandonment can rise to the surface, and our hearts will be cracked open. Grief Yoga creates a safe ritual in which that opening can occur, and the pain of grief can become fuel for healing. Grief Yoga uses a blend of Hatha and Restorative Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Kundalini Breath of Fire, Laughter Yoga and Dance, all working together to release the sadness and anger that is held in the body. Once those emotions are released, we are free to reconnect to the gift of life. People of all ages, body types, physical conditions and mobility challenges — as well as those who have never tried yoga before — have benefited from this process. When teaching a Grief Yoga class, I offer these three recommendations to help participants compassionately move through grief: 1) The Body Remembers - When we don’t express feelings fully, the body holds onto them. Surrender on your yoga mat to any heartbreak or tears. Let go of what people think, and allow the feelings to flow. Go within and listen to your body. What is it telling you? Do not be afraid to listen. 42
Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2016
2) Observe Your Mind - The pain of loss can wound you, but your thoughts may be amplifying your suffering. Your thoughts shape your experience of loss, so positive thinking and kindness can help. Some affirmations may include, “I am grateful for the time I had with my loved one.” Or “I honor my loss by feeling my pain and recognize my healing.” Or “I will live to the fullest of my potential.” 3) Spirit Speaks - Spirituality is about accepting love, no matter what’s going on. As you feel, remember that you’re not alone in your sorrow. Within your yoga mat, let go and open yourself up to a higher power. In order to heal, stop and listen to that divine, intuitive wisdom. Find the compassion to release all judgments and reconnect to love. When you stand up and get off the mat, start moving. Remember that you are still alive for a reason. Life is precious. What will you do today? How will you live a life that honors your loved one? That will be the true gift of grief.

Celebrating Our Connection to Nature, Community, and Ourselves at The St. Louis Earth Day Festival in Forest Park (With FREE Yoga by Yoga Buzz!) It’s springtime in St. Louis! The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and we’re ready to head outdoors. Each April, one seasonal tradition unofficially marks the kick-off of St. Louis’ outdoor event season - the annual St. Louis Earth Day Festival. On Sunday, April 24th, St. Louisans of all ages and walks of life will come together in beautiful Forest Park to celebrate the spirit of Earth Day and our vibrant St. Louis community at this free, non-political, fun, and family-friendly event. There’s something for everyone at the St. Louis Earth Day Festival. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about sustainable products and services from area businesses and nonprofits, shop unique wares from local and global artisans committed to environmental responsibility and fair trade, and explore themed experience areas including Alternative Transportation and Fuels; Arts and Crafts; Energy and Green Building; The Farmers Market; Home and Pets; Nature, Recreation and Wildlife; The Peace Garden; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; Social Sustainability; Wellness and Spirituality; and the Youth Corner, which will feature hands-on art and science activities for all ages. Back by popular demand, this year’s festival will again include a rock climbing wall provided by Upper Limits, a pet adoption area provided by Nature’s Variety Instinct, and free yoga in the park all day for both adults and children courtesy of Yoga Buzz. Three stages of entertainment will feature music from area artists, a sustainable fashion show, a visit from Circus Flora, and a live bird show by the World Bird Sanctuary, as well as a special JOIA World Percussion All-Species Jamboree Parade, which will kick-off at the Café Stage and flow through the Festival grounds. Over 20 food and beverage vendors will be serving up diverse, local cuisine. Schlafly will have a selection of local brews on tap, including their Organic IPA, which is brewed in honor of Earth Day. All Festival food vendors participate in the event’s zero waste initiative, serving on only recyclable and compostable service ware. All event waste will be collected and sorted by St. Louis Earth Day’s Recycling On the Go program, with support from sponsor Subaru. Seventeen of the restaurants and food trucks featured in this year’s Earth Day Café have been certified for sustainable operations by The Green Dining Alliance, a program of St. Louis Earth Day (www.greendiningalliance. org). In order to reduce the environmental footprint of the festival, visitors are encouraged to carpool, walk, or cycle to the event. New this year, Trailnet and Big Shark will lead an organized bike ride to the festival from each of the two Schlafly brewpubs. Join the Schlafly ‘Slow Roll’ to the Festival and receive a special prize. Free bike valet stations will be available on the festival grounds. For guests who do need to drive, biodiesel and
compressed natural gas (CNG) shuttle busses will run between overflow parking areas and the festival grounds every 15 minutes. Festival-goers can also take the “Earth Day Challenge” by bringing a reusable bag, refillable water bottle, and using low-impact transportation to get to Forest Park. Another eco-friendly prize will be given to guests who accomplish two of the three challenges. Those who want to start the party early can head to Forest Park on Saturday, April 23rd for Earth Day Eve, a celebration to benefit the St. Louis Earth Day organization. Like the festival, Earth Day Eve is family-friendly and open to the public. All are welcome to enjoy a special selection of festival food and kick back to the music of Jake’s Leg, who performed 27 years ago at the very first St. Louis Earth Day celebration. Earth Day Eve guests can take part in a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and activities including face painting and t-shirt tie dying. General admission to Earth Day Eve is just $5.00 (free for kids 12 and under). Special admission tickets to the VIP ‘Friends of Earth Day Tent,’ which include free food and beverage catered by Bailey’s Restaurants and Schlafly, are just $45.00 for adults, and $20.00 for kids 12 and under. Proceeds from Earth Day Eve support the yearround programming of St. Louis Earth Day, including services like Recycling On the Go, Earth Day Action Grants and The Green Dining Alliance. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Think Global, Act STL.’ The St. Louis Earth Day Festival is a welcoming place where all are invited for celebration and learning. Dogs on leashes are welcome, too - so bring the WHOLE family and head to Forest Park for St. Louis Earth Day! Saturday, April 23rd, 4 -7 p.m. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2016

Bold or subtle, water features are just as diverse as people. Matching the genre and level of character to your property and personality is paramount. Quiet spaces designed for a quaint and cozy feel may call for a subdued feature wall with a small collection pool, thus adding just enough sound to enhance the space without unnecessary occupation of attention. Large spaces often denote larger features. An expansive pool in need of refurbishing is the perfect candidate for either a natural or modern styled waterfall. Turn on the falls, close your eyes, and catch yourself forgetting where you are. Marrying the style of your home and your taste into one beautiful landscape or feature is what good design is all about. Luxury Home Sauna What is Infrared? Infrared light (experienced as heat) is the invisible part of the sun's spectrum with the ability to penetrate human tissue to produce a host of health benefits. It is naturally occurring from the sun and is the basis for all our saunas. Far Infrared Health Benefits Because infrared sauna therapy heats the body directly rather than simply warming the air, it raises the core body temperature and produces a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where most toxins reside. Solocarbon® far infrared is clinically shown to reduce blood pressure and shrink belly fat. Dedicated to offering the most effective wellness solutions available, Solocarbon® heating technology is the foundation for our saunas. It is 95 percent efficient and the only heater on the market clinically shown to raise core temperature, lower blood pressure and aid in weight loss. We have taken our proprietary heaters to the next level with Solocarbon® Full Spectrum. This unique patented technology provides near, mid and far infrared at optimal wavelengths based on 56 clinical studies. With high power infrared proven 99 percent effective across all wavelengths and advanced LED technology delivering true near infrared heat, Solocarbon® Full Spectrum can evolve with changing health needs over time.

Infrared light is part of the sun’s invisible spectrum of light that has the ability to penetrate the human tissue. Infrared heat therapy uses these infrared light characteristics to heat the body directly rather than just the air. The experience of an infrared sauna is similar to sunbathing, which gives you the radiant heat that is all you own. The infrared heat penetrates your skin, giving you that wonderful natural warmth. Unlike sunbathing, infrared heat therapy is completely healthy and safe. You can relax in an infrared sauna and it will never cause your skin to burn. Infrared saunas increase the body’s core temperature, thus resulting in a much deeper, more detoxifying sweat from the cellular level of the skin where many toxins are housed. Conventional hot rock/steam heat saunas heat the air with steam, which can often be unbearably hot and will cause you to only sweat at the surface of the tissue. Steam also makes the air difficult to breath. An infrared sauna uses soothing dry infrared heat that is well ventilated and extremely comfortable and relaxing. Infrared heat therapy has also been proven to assist with weight loss, pain relief, improved circulation and skin rejuvenation. Safety of Infrared You can be exposed to infrared heat for hours and it will never cause your skin to burn. Infrared heat is completely healthy and safe for all living things. In fact, infrared heat is so safe that it is used in hospitals to warm newborn infants. The same electrical standards required for the safety of your home are implemented into the electrical system of our saunas. Steel conduits protect your sauna from fire hazard and harmful electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2016

Living Fit
The Healthy Little Secrets of Celebrities & Athletes by TJ Williams The frenetic pace of everyday life impacts how we all look and feel, and sometimes even the most health-conscious people could use a little extra help. It is hard not to be skeptical with so many treatments being referred to as the “fountain of youth”. Two treatments have proven track records in their ability to improve health: intravenous (IV) nutrient therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). While these therapies have long been the “healthy little secrets” of celebrities and athletes, they are beneficial for anyone looking to improve their overall health. Nutrient IV therapy is simply the administration of specific vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients intravenously. This route of administration bypasses the gut, putting the nutrients directly into our blood where they can be most easily used. IV nutrition has been used by doctors across the country for over 50 years for its ability to improve and maintain overall health, increase energy levels, speed recovery, enhance memory and mood, and reduce susceptibility to infections. IV therapy has been gaining a lot of traction in the past few years as “drip bars” and “IV spas” have sprung up in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, offering customized blends of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to do everything from cure a hangover to increase weight loss to slow the aging process. Many celebrities have also embraced the use of IV nutrition including Rihanna, Cindy Crawford, Madonna and
Sophia Vergara, who according to People Magazine, had an IV rehydration station available for the guests at her wedding. Weekly IV drips are being adopted by a growing number of health-conscious people as the antidote to a busy, hectic lifestyle. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment that can enhance the body’s natural healing processes and abilities. It does this by gently increasing the pressure of the air around us while we breathe almost 100 percent oxygen. The increased pressure allows for an increased capacity of our body to carry oxygen. This allows us to get oxygen to the tissues that need it most. It is widely known that doctors utilize HBOT to treat many different conditions from Lyme disease to head injuries (concussions) to strokes. Only recently, however, has the use of HBOT gained traction for beauty and anti-aging purposes. HBOT can help with symptoms of aging, such as facial wrinkles and lack of endurance. Also, just as professional athletes use HBOT to help them enhance performance, HBOT has become an increasingly popular treatment to lessen downtime after cosmetic procedures. The modern world can be stressful, but there are natural and effective treatments that can help you tackle anything life throws your way, and ensure you look good while doing it.

Actualize Your Body’s Blueprint
obscure our magnificent blueprint. However, the great news is that it is possible, through conscious somatic exploration, to rediscover and live from that healthy blueprint – the personal embodiment that makes us who we are and who we can be. A life-changing way to recover this design is to construct a somatic history of the body, which is different from a medical history. It focuses on important body and movement memories at different stages of life, beginning at conception or birth. Make a list of early patterning, flow states and motor development. Remember all of the ways that you moved or were moved, hurt, held and loved. Study old photos that capture moments of childhood security or feelings of spontaneity, pleasure and play. Ask relatives about early life details and how they witnessed you. New perspectives emerge with awareness of a range of impressions from your past that offer a vision of potential. Each body tells a remarkable story that deserves your attention. Selfdiscovery opens up levels of inner joy, resilience and well-being. Choose to embody your greatness from caterpillar to butterfly!
by Becky Brittain, Ph.D, R-DMT Let’s get the big picture: the human body is an amazing network of cells, DNA, body systems, tissues, glands, nerves, muscles, brain, synapses and more. All of the parts work together as a flowing, synergistic whole system that also holds thoughts, feelings, memories and consciousness, as well as imaginative and energetic capabilities. It is an evolving physical and divine vehicle for living and awakening. We start life with an original body blueprint that holds the highest potential for personal growth and transformation. If we are not living in sync with that blueprint, we may feel chronically uncomfortable with a vague sense that life is a struggle. We may miss living our passionate purpose. Professor William E. Hocking of Harvard once remarked that “we are born with the body God gave us, but by the time we are 40 we have the body we have created for ourselves. And this body that we have created is less expressive, less alive than it could be, because it is not experienced by most of us.” Our modern disembodied culture does not encourage us to align with this intelligent body design, and therefore so much wisdom becomes hidden or denied. As we grow up, years of experiences, conditioning and, sometimes, trauma, add layers that can 50

HEALTH CHALLENGES Dr. Bryan Deloney, Chesterfield, is bringing one of the newest advancements in natural health and healing to local residents. Deloney is helping patients reverse health challenges, such as excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders fibromyalgia and autoimmune issues, using the NutriMost Resonant Frequency Technology (NRF).
Everyone Gains Weight Differently Due to Hormones NRF technology can target your hormone imbalances and get to the cause of your weight gain, overcoming weight loss resistance and solving your weight challenges. First, patients undergo a fast, painless scan of their body’s cells by using the comprehensive electro-impedance resonant frequency (NRF) technology. This allows Dr. Deloney to take a “hormonal fingerprint” of every factor that affects weight gain, including fat burning, fat storage, metabolism, the organs involved, hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, metals, toxins, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, candida, parasites and nanobacteria. It gives him the capability of measuring and assisting the body’s innate healing abilities. NRF technology is so advanced and specific it can determine hormone imbalances, organ function weakness, and much more. Deloney explains, “we determine your personal recipe for healthy weight and healing using resonant frequencies”. Using an understanding of resonant frequencies, Dr. Deloney can determine precisely what the body needs to bring it into its optimal fat burning zone and keep it there. This is done by measuring the baseline of each factor being measured (hormone, neurotransmitter, heavy metal, bacteria, virus, organ, etc.), and then the doctor can determine what supplement or formula is needed by observing what the effect of that item is on the baseline (whether it makes it more coherent or less coherent). The program displays the results and identifies the biomarkers (vitamins, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, toxins, microbes, etc.) that are out of range regarding the fat burning zone. Once the out-of-range fat biomarkers are identified, the program will determine exactly what is needed to bring the biomarkers back into fat burning. It will identify what is needed nutritionally; but more than that, the foundation of the whole program is the ability to determine the exact “recipe” for each person’s fat burning. The program creates a “recipe” for hormones/ neurotransmitters, a “recipe” for detox and a “recipe” for the fat burning formula. LET THE BALANCING AND HEALING BEGIN! Once in this balance state and fat burning zone: • You experience no hunger or cravings, unlike other weight loss programs • The typical fat loss is between ½ pound and 2 pounds of fat per day • You will have more energy, better sleep, and you will be in a better mood • Your hormones will become more and more balanced • You will enter a state of autophagy, which helps the body overcome all sorts of health challenges
The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System is safe, fast, and effective. You’ll clear out harmful toxins and balance your hormones as you lose fat at an unbelievable pace. Typical results see patients losing 20 – 40 pounds in 40 days. And the best part? The results are permanent. Following your 40 days of fat loss, NutriMost will reset your metabolism and weight set point, so you can keep the weight off for good. This safe, doctor-supervised system works in just 6 weeks, guaranteed.

What You Should Know When Starting a Business by C. Michael Unterreiner, ChFC Entrepreneurs start small, seeking the exciting and potentially rewarding experience of being their own boss while doing something they enjoy. If you're thinking about starting your own business, you'll need a sound plan, creativity, personal dedication, and probably some form of financial investment. Before you make the commitment to starting your own business, make sure it's the right move for you. Here are a few important factors to consider: Personal investment Why do you want to start a business? You should be passionate about your business idea, because your business will need your personal commitment and sacrifice.
54
demand for your products or services. It will take some time and effort to study this, but many businesses fail simply because there is little demand or the competition is too strong. Selecting a business entity Decide what form of legal entity your business will take: sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation. The type of entity you select is important because it can affect your potential personal liability and the taxes that you’ll pay. It’s a good idea to consult a financial or legal professional. The business plan
Use market research to identify your competition. Develop a written business plan and understand what licenses and/or permits you'll need. Determine how much capital you'll need to start your business, and where that capital will come from.
Your business idea becomes real when you put it down on paper. A business plan is the story of your business: the name, what it does, what markets you serve, what differentiates you from the competition, where your business is now, and where you see it in the future. Your business plan should serve as a road map as you move forward.
However, such funding is most likely to be successful if it's structured in a businesslike way, with clear terms of repayment or ownership participation.
Type of business
Financing your business
Anything else?
Do you have a unique idea, or do you want to get involved in a business that already exists, like a franchise? Who is your competition, and what will separate your business from the competition?
Where will you get the funds to set your dream in motion —and sustain it? To determine your financing needs, develop a budget, projected over a period of months and/or years.
Your business should not only match your talents, abilities, and interests, but it also should have a viable place in the market, based on your competition and the potential
You may be able to raise money for the business from your savings or by borrowing against your own assets. Another common source of funds is your friends and family.
There are plenty of other things to consider, such as taxes, licenses, fees, and permits. You'll need to think about where to locate your business and how you'll market it, and whether you will have employees. Check the Small Business Administration website at www.sba.gov for information on locating a mentor to help you with these decisions.

Plasma Rich Platelet Therapy as a Therapeutic Option for Male and Female Patients Experiencing Hair Loss by Dr. Russell T. Imboden, DO At the offices of Dr. Russell Imboden, we have been performing Plasma Rich Platelet (PRP) therapy as a therapeutic option for male and female patients experiencing hair loss. PRP is an exciting, non-surgical procedure for patients who require stimulation of hair growth for hair loss conditions. Scientific research and technology continuously provide the medical community with new understandings of wound and tissue healing. As a result of these studies, we recognize that PRP is an all-natural, autologous medical procedure performed in physicians offices for scalp, skin and hair stimulation. Mistakenly thought to be a strictly male disease, women make up to 40 percent of hair loss sufferers, according to the American Hair Loss Association. Androgenic alopecia, or common male pattern baldness, accounts for more than 95 percent of hair loss in men. By the age of 35, two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss. Both male and female pattern baldness have a strong genetic component. These types of baldness are caused by individual hair follicles responding to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a more potent form of testosterone that is responsible for body and facial hair in men and women. (Yes, women have testosterone in their bodies, just like men have estrogen in theirs.) The reason female pattern baldness usually doesn’t occur until perimenopause or menopause is because women have enough estrogen circulating in their bodies to offset the presence of DHT. As a woman’s estrogen levels decline, however, hair follicles are “unprotected” and DHT has more of an unwanted impact, causing texture changes, thinning and loss of hair. DHT attacks the hair follicle and contracts the follicle and its opening to the point of turning a normal strand of hair into peach fuzz. Think of the follicle curling up like a puppy in its bed and going to sleep — and
staying asleep. Essentially, PRP treatments wake up the puppy. PRP is the latest breakthrough in follicular regeneration, and the closest researchers have come to hair cloning. The injection procedure is less invasive than a surgical procedure and requires only a 90-minute appointment to administer, with no true downtime after treatment. PRP is concentrated blood plasma that contains approximately five times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. Platelets contain growth factors that promote regeneration of the cells in the body. By increasing the platelet count in the wounded area, the body’s healing capacity in that area is accelerated — therefore, this technique truly uses one’s own blood to heal itself. When it comes to hair loss, if the hair follicles or roots are healthy, the growth of the hair is healthy, because hair follicles survive on the nutrition they get from the blood supply. If we introduce platelets by administering PRP in the area of damaged hair follicles, it amplifies the body’s naturally occurring wound-healing mechanism. PRP helps to increase blood flow to the scalp and can reawaken dormant hairs to stop active hair loss in men and women. For young men experiencing thinning hair, PRP is a new alternative to halt hair loss. For men as young as 18 years of age, PRP offers a safe and reliable alternative to the continuous, daily use of topical treatments and prescription drugs. There are no wounds created; only a tiny needle is used, so there is no scarring of any sort, and following the procedure there is zero evidence that a procedure has taken place. Men and women receiving PRP therapy exhibit improvement after about three months, when they begin to notice a difference. Within six months, patients see remarkable improvement in the quality of hair growth and texture. At first, the new
hair is light fuzz, but gradually each hair shaft becomes thicker, darker, and longer, until the follicles begin producing their own natural hair--without surgery and at a fraction of the cost. How a patient responds to the procedure can vary from person to person and will depend on the intrinsic healing ability of one’s own body. The beauty of using PRP for hair restoration is that this type of therapy is regenerative, meaning it continues working for months after the initial injections. In other words, once the PRP stimulates hair follicles into the growth phase, the follicles often return to their youthful growth cycle. I suggest that my patients return once a year for a PRP booster treatment to reinvigorate their scalp and keep their hair looking young and healthy. (A series of period booster injections might be considered for maintenance and continued prevention, depending on individual results.) PRP Hair Restoration is suitable for both men and women. It is a state-of-the-art, non-surgical, totally natural alternative medical procedure used for the treatment of hair loss or hair thinning. Dr. Imboden’s practice is located on Jungermann Road in St. Peters. To learn more about the PRP therapy and Dr. Imboden’s services, visit drrussellimboden.com. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2016

Maintaining Your Machine “Not only must you be able to locate the obstruction, but you must have the skill to remove it.”
-Andrew Taylor Still, DO, MD Founder of Osteopathy
by Christopher S. Ngo, DO Sometimes we take for granted that the human body is an amazing machine. It is extremely durable and complex, and is fully selfregulating. The body is constantly active, running 24/7 while simultaneously able to withstand stresses placed upon it. In addition, the parts of the body are extremely intricate and interconnected. Science is constantly making new discoveries about how the body works. Despite how much activity is occurring within the body, we are unaware of the majority of these processes. The body subconsciously knows how to repair and manage its needs by itself. However, like any machine, the body can still break down. Constant wear and tear, injury or trauma, repetitive motions, stress all take their toll on the body’s parts. Malfunctioning of these parts may manifest as pain, discomfort, decreased function, inflammation, or fatigue. What we call disease is simply a broken part or process no longer able to function properly. Fortunately, many of these parts can be repaired before permanent damage occurs. When we experience simple pains and aches, this is similar to a warning indicator on your car dashboard or computer. Something should be checked before a more severe problem occurs. If we ignore the issue long enough, permanent damage may result, requiring a replacement. An osteopathic physician is simply a technician for an extremely complicated machine. Through simple touch, they are able to evaluate and localize the problem at its cause and correct the malfunctioning part. For the majority of cases, this correction restores the self regulating component of the body. This allows healing to occur, relieves discomfort, and gives the patient the ability to increase their activity and live their life again. Christopher S. Ngo, DO, is board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and owner of Osteopathic Horizons located at Stillpointe Wellness Center, 2135 Dorothy Dr, Ste. 6, Belleville, IL 62223. Your Power of BEING!
by Marilyn Eagen
We are moving out of the wintertime, a time that in many traditions is viewed as a time for going inward, contemplating and planning. Now that we have spent that time planning and processing, hopefully we have an idea of what we want to see grow in the spring. As the days start to grown longer, this season is traditionally known as the time to “spring” into action. Our world is in a constant state of flux, but our seasons stay the same in nature's eyes. We need to make some changes in how we handle these energies as we continue to change globally. The spring energy is one of action. We are also in a much larger time of constant change, which could leave us feeling rushed or hurried. I am inviting everyone to stop and check into how the action they are about to take feels to them rather than get caught up in the “hurried” feeling that can sometimes take us over. Our time is valuable and our actions are equally important. We don’t want to just react in the old patterns of “shoulds”, obligations and old habits; we want to respond appropriately for the highest good of all. Ask yourself if this action “expands your heart” or makes you tired or “feel small.” The action needs to fit who you are and what you want to grow in your life. This can allow us to feel as if there is plenty of time to do what we want and to enjoy the beauty of things around us. Time seems to be moving so quickly that we are often left feeling overwhelmed. This type of energy and emotion does not serve us or anyone around us. We are on this earth for a very important purpose at this time, and feeling in alignment with ourselves and with the highest good of all makes life feel better to everyone. As the entire world is growing and changing, we are also becoming more and more sensitive to each other. Instead of getting caught up in the rush and feeling as though we are all

running in a hamster wheel, I suggest that we stop and breathe. Feel the proposed action in your body; the feeling of your heart expanding is not easily mistaken. It is obvious when you compare it to feeling “small” or “exhausting.” Pay attention and you as well as everyone around you will feel better. Your entire life will be expanded in a comfortable and compassionate way using this inspired action exercise. This is your power of being. It doesn’t mean to just sit and “be” all the time; it means to do things that expand your “being-ness” in a way that serves everyone, including you. You will feel energetic and free to do more of what you want to see grow in your world. Stop, breathe, feel the expansion of your heart before acting. Following your own guidance with inspired action, you and everyone around you will say “Thank You!” Marilyn Eagen of Holistic Harmony Lifecare is a certified Energy Medicine Practitioner, Certified Life Coach and a Reiki Master Teacher in Usui, Karuna, Holy Fire and Celestial Reiki. What Breaks Your Flow? by Rebecca Wiederkehr, LCSW It is a pleasant, exciting day, the sun is shining, you are humming a happy song and you get to your meeting ready to conquer the world. Someone in the meeting reports disaster in their workshop. They were using the tool you created. If used properly it is supposed to produce nearly perfect results. With questioning you find out, indeed, there was misuse or no use at all. You notice your body starting to tense. Breathing goes shallow. Upon leaving the meeting you find yourself irritated with everyone, feeling angrier as you go along. “What is happening?” you ask yourself. It was such a good day. It suddenly hits you that there it is again, this reaction inside of you. You know the routine to ask yourself. “What am I thinking?” “What am I telling myself?” “Why am I feeling threatened?” It hits you and you realize you don’t have control over how people use this tool you created and not to take it personally. You’re still an okay person. At least you caught it rather quickly this time, had a good laugh at yourself and the sun is still shining. Another scenario could be that you get home first from a stressful day. Your boss yelled at you again for something that was out of your control. You realize how unprofessional this is on the boss’s part. Still you wonder, “What is wrong with me?” “Why can’t I get more work completed in a timely manner?” Your heart is pounding. Before your boss yelled you were feeling great, proud of all the things you had been getting done, even
ahead of schedule. Driving home that day you are aware of feeling scared. “What if I lose this job?” “Where will that put us?” Then your partner walks in with a huge frown on his face. Your heart drops again. There was tension this morning and you wondered what you had done. “Why is he upset with me?” He puts his brief case down and says, “Boy, is it good to see you. Give me a hug. What a day.” Then he shares how stressed he has been about a big meeting coming up and how his day went. You take in a deep breath, relax into your happy place, all is right with the world and you are ready to be present to your partner’s story. What is your scenario? What takes you out of feeling great to feeling stressed and miserable, from happy and peaceful to ground zero and back to peaceful and happy again? Notice how quickly these shifts can happen. Realize if we don’t become aware of what is going on inside that these thoughts can create stress and grow into full grown anxiety or panic attacks, creating havoc with our lives. Most often the root of our anger, stress and anxiety is fear created by thought. Epictetus said 2000 years ago, “ Men are not troubled by things themselves, but by their thoughts about them”. Our emotions are automatic responses to our thoughts. The key is noticing these
emotions as a clue and gift to recognizing what we are thinking. Yoga, regular meditation, daily exercise and observing emotions to discover our thoughts can be tools for this journey. It is important for our health and well-being to be our own detective/healer and observe ourselves to understand these phenomena, find our repeat patterns and strengthen our ability to choose thoughts so that we can make our shifts more quickly. Rebecca Wiederkehr, LCSW, assists people in releasing stuck trauma as well as supporting personal and spiritual growth within relationships with self and others. Ready to Prevent Surgery & Eliminate Your Arthritis Pain? by Dr. Dan Gogliotti Are your knees very stiff in the morning? Do your knees hurt when going up or down stairs? Do you frequently take ibuprofen or aspirin for your knee pain? Do the activities you enjoy cause pain around your knees? Have you been told that you will need knee replacement surgery? When it comes to conditions that drastically impact daily life, knee pain is among the most common and the most detrimental. Far too frequently, people are told that they are destined for joint replacement surgery without being provided any other less invasive options. At my clinic, we look to provide options aside from dangerous surgeries and potentially addictive pain medications. Our philosophy is to work with the natural healing abilities of your body, rather than fight against them. At Superior Healthcare Physical Medicine of St. Louis, we utilize the most advanced combination of treatments for eliminating or reducing knee pain fast. The FDA has officially approved Hyaluronic Acid for use in the treatment of Arthritis of the knee. Hyaluronic acid bonds with joint fluid naturally present in your knee to create lubrications and cushioning layer in the knee. It reduces pain, inflammation, and swelling of the joint, allowing you to do the everyday activities you enjoy! There are no major side effects, and the best results occur when hyaluronic acid injections are combined with advanced knee rehabilitation.
Keys to Our Knee Pain Success All-Natural hyaluronic acid acts as a lubricant and shock absorber in the knee. When There’s No Time to be Healthy by Heather Deranja, MA, RDN, LD The average person works too many hours, has too many commitments, and is too exhausted at the end of the day to think about making a meal for themselves, much less for their family. It’s easier to heat up a frozen dinner or hit a drive-thru, resulting in poor food choices that leave us fat, sick, and feeling like crap. When you fail to plan, you are planning to fail when it comes achieving weight loss or any other health goals.

We usually start off with the greatest intentions of being healthy, but because we don’t have strategies in place that are realistic and sustainable, reaching the end goal becomes difficult, leaving us defeated, self-sabotaging, and crawling back to our old habits.
Nutrition Vixen provides individuals and families with realistic strategies for feeling like they have control over their healthy habits by providing services that include meal planning, cooking classes, and personalized coaching. She helps clients create new healthy habits that will last a lifetime, and that can be passed on to their children.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Just imagine a way to have a healthy lifestyle that is cost effective, doesn’t require a ton of time, isn’t stressful, and actually tastes good. Just read what this client had to say: “Heather came to our house and showed

Juice Bar St. Louis
At Juice Bar St. Louis, they strive to provide the freshest possible product to their customers, using produce delivered daily (organic when possible). Through the use of organic superfoods, Juice Bar will provide all of its customers with a nutrition-packed powerhouse in a glass. They have several root-based (carrots and beets) and several greens-based (spinach and kale) juices that they love to serve their customers. Juice Bar’s juice and smoothie flavor profiles are designed in a way that allows customers to taste each individual ingredient and appreciate its full flavor. A root-based juice that is not only tasty but also extremely nutritious according to Juice Bar is “Orange You Glad,” which contains freshly juiced carrots, apples, pineapple, mint, lemon and ginger. The carrots and apples deliver a massive dose of vitamins B6, K and E, as well as minerals such as niacin, folate and manganese. Due to the standard diet of most Americans, many people are deficient in these vitamins and minerals, affecting their ability to live a healthy life. The ginger in Orange You Glad aids in digestion and boosts the immune system – why take a synthetic multivitamin when you could just drink it in the form of a delicious juice? Another popular juice on Juice Bar’s menu is “Sweet Greens.” Sweet Greens has a base of spinach, kale, parsley and lemon. To that base, Juice Bar adds cucumbers and apples and ta-da… the result is a folate-rich antioxidant “salad in a cup” ready for consumption. The greens provide massive doses of antioxidants and folate; the lemon is a great alkalizer (it prevents disease from forming within the body!); the parsley is an amazing detoxifier capable of pulling heavy metals from the body; and the cucumbers provide silica – a mineral that does wonders with joint lubrication and connective tissue strengthening. What’s not to love about all these benefits?! If you’re looking to really up the ante, Juice Bar allows customers to add organic superfoods to any juice or smoothie. Looking to add some fiber to your drink? Add some chia. Need protein? Go for some hemp seeds. Want even more alkalization? Add some matcha powder or spirulina. Juice Bar also offers maca, goji berries, bee pollen, flax oil, coconut oil, cacao and local honey. Look for Juice Bar to open this summer 2016 in Rock Hill at 9849 Manchester Road, Saint Louis, MO, 63119. They cannot wait to serve customers, and they hope to see you soon! Y&S Interview
Bradford Smith and the Bhavantu Band Musician Bradford Smith has had a passion for music all his life, playing multiple instruments and even traveling the country to share his music with others. Currently, he leads Bradford Smith and the Bhavantu Band in Kirtan, or call and response singing, here in St. Louis. Yoga & Spa Magazine interviewed Smith to learn all about Kirtan – what it is, why Smith loves it, and how it can enhance your life.
by Maggie Hallam Y&S: Tell us about yourself and your Kirtan. BS: I have been doing Kirtan since 2003 – so about 13 years. Before that, I was out on the road as a musician, playing and selling my Native American Flute music. I have been a musician all my life – since grade school when I began playing the piano. Currently, I’m living here in St. Louis doing Kirtan, mostly at Big Bend Yoga. I had been introduced to Kirtan through the Art of Living Group in the late 90s. When I first started being on the road with my Native American Flute Music a friend gave me a CD of Krishna Das’ album ‘Live on Planet Earth’, which was his big breakthrough album. I had an appreciation of the music, so while driving an insane 40,000 miles that first year, I would sing along to pass the time. Along the way I realized the connection that Kirtan created and I want to share it. Y&S: For those who are unfamiliar, what is Kirtan? BS: Kirtan is call and response singing – it’s a singing meditation, and normally you’re singing mantras or Sanskrit mantras of Hindu principles. These are about how to create the life you want to live and understanding the human condition. Each Kirtan is typically 1.5 to 2 hours long, led by me and my Kirtan group, Bradford Smith and the Bhavantu Band and each one of my Kirtans can have anywhere between 20 and 40 people. 66
Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2016
Y&S: What is your favorite mantra? BS: My favorite mantra is “om namaha Shivaya” which essentially means, “there will always be change, so let’s be grateful for the change when it comes.” Y&S: What instruments do you play? BS: With Kirtan, I play a harmonium, which is a small keyboard instrument, basically a pump organ that sounds just like an accordion. I play with my group, the Bhavantu Band – we have two female vocalists, Jill Duncan and Lydia Brown, who are typically leading the response, and a drummer, Schuyler Kingsland, playing the tabla. A Kirtan can include other instruments also – violins and flutes are common in Kirtan – and sometimes I join other Kirtan groups playing the saxophone. It’s really not about any specific instrument, but rather using the instruments you have at hand. I also play the piano, saxophone, and Native American Flute, and I do the vocals associated with Kirtan. Y&S: Why are you passionate about this practice?
BS: It’s the best way to make a connection with the audience that has a positive outcome. Because it’s call and response singing, I’m asking the audience to sing the same phrase back. So, when I sing about change, for example, the audience is also expressing that themselves. Y&S: How can Kirtan enhance someone’s life? BS: With the meditation aspects, it can help you become the observer of life. Any meditation helps you slow down your life or thoughts so that when a situation comes up, you can take time to think about it before you react impulsively. Kirtan can be a relaxing practice because you become so focused on the singing that you get focused on being in the present. Y&S: How can readers experience Kirtan? BS: Come to a Kirtan! My next Kirtan is April 23 at Shanti Yoga, 7346 Manchester Rd #200, Maplewood, MO 63143 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. I have a Kirtan group on Facebook called Kirtan STL, where you can ask to become a member and stay updated on my schedule and other Kirtans in the area, and you can also find me at bradfordsmithmusic.com.
