YOU Version 2.0 I absolutely love a new year. Why? It gives me the opportunity to reflect on the year past and to plan the next 365 days of my life.

I believe we are here to live fully and to experience

all that we can in our short time on the planet. We live in an age of spiritual enlightenment, scientific

breakthroughs and endless opportunities for growth and expansion. We need

to remind ourselves to take advantage of these gifts and to use them to better ourselves, our environment and our community.

Each January, I begin my task by asking myself several questions, including: What

do I want to achieve in the upcoming year in every area? What mistakes did I make in the past year that I can move toward amending? How will I take my life to the

next level in every area; spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally and financially? Where do you need to reboot your life?

Since dreams are achieved through action, my next step is to act. Through yoga,

meditation and focus, my plan begins to emerge. Creating a plan of action is part

of attracting our dreams and reaching our goals. Scheduling my action plan on my calendar makes it real and sticking to it makes it happen.

I have found that filling my days with loving actions toward myself and others not

only makes it easier to achieve my goals, but gives me a sense of fulfillment. When

we take care of ourselves and exude love, passion and enthusiasm, we attract the right people and situations that align with those dreams we pasted on our vision

board. Self love is the most important action to take toward our dreams. If we are

tired, angry and depressed, who is going to want to work with us, play with us or

travel with us? If we are inspired (in Spirit) and enthusiastic, we become a magnet for abundance.

Yoga & Spa Magazine has ample resources for you to reboot and become YOU Version 2.0. You can meet most of these incredible people at our annual Living Fit Expo at Plaza Frontenac, January 30th. General Growth Properties’ Plaza

Frontenac continue to support this incredible event with their passion for health, wellness and philanthropy.

Big Box to Boutique, Group Fitness is Back in a Big Way by Monica Koch The latest trend in fitness is finally in full force in the Lou. Boutique fitness is specialized, brand focused studios with instructors who are experts in their fields and passionate about what they teach, which elevates the experience for the client. We sell an experience, a vibe and an identity. Gone are the days of big box gyms. Group training is the way to go (think Jane Fonda…she is back, rebranded and here to stay). You can hit 3 different studios in a week for around $50-$60. Group fitness classes are a great way to break out of a rut and connect with the community. Energy is created in these classes when everyone is working hard and moving together. Energy breeds energy. A group fitness instructor’s job is to motivate YOU and get YOU out of your head and constantly push you mentally and physically. If you are bored, so is your body. You should not be thinking about your lists or meeting at work, all of that should be left on the studio floor. This is your time! When you leave class you will feel empowered, strong and uplifted. When you push yourself physically, mental breakthroughs happen.

The more fit we become, the better our bodies are able to handle the same level of exercise. Our bodies burn fewer calories, our metabolism decreases and our progress stalls. To avoid this plateau, we need to train our bodies differently every day. Are you stuck in a rut? We need to get out of our comfort zones and break through our self-induced limitations – this is where change happens. When we move quickly and your heart is pumping, something crazy happens…you don’t overthink it. Small changes equal big

results. I love seeing a client’s face when they have created a new edge for themselves. Try a new class a week and get outside of your comfort zone to see change. People say, I can’t, or I’m not coordinated. BS, that is why you keep practicing and coming back. My Pure Hot yogis say, “It’s not yoga perfect, it’s yoga practice.” Same thing applies to all group fitness classes…practice makes good! “You don’t get what you wish for, you get what you work for.” Monica Koch (owner of klean&lean) has been in the fitness industry for 30 years and has developed her own innovative technique that takes you out of your comfort zone. She is a certified personal trainer, instructor for group fitness classes, a food and fitness motivator and the Health & Fitness Editor for Yoga & Spa Magazine. LOVE IS THE ANSWER by Janie Oelke Year after year we make resolutions to improve our health and give up various bad habits. However, most of us fail to keep our promises, leaving us full of negative energies like doubt, shame, judgement, frustration, sadness and fatigue. We slip back into old patterns that are familiar to us. Everything in our world is based on patterns and rhythm so it makes sense that we are, too. The issue is what to do about these deep-seated patterns that sabotage our efforts to make positive changes. How do we go about re-patterning some of our familiar ways that were created out of fear and lack, causing us to make choices that keep us stuck and “in prison”? The answer is simple. By creating more space for the expansion of love and then allowing love to flow with all the energies that arise from within to be healed. It is that simple, but requires a deep desire to remain consistent and compassionate with ourselves. As a lifestyle mentor and owner of HealthyZone, I offer my clients a sacred and safe space to allow their dark energies to be revealed so they can heal. The process is practical and highly effective and can improve one’s quality of life. Based on client feedback they feel supported and able to make positive changes in ways they had never experienced in the past. They are guided to feel, in order to heal and take full responsibility for themselves. They finally get that nobody “makes” them feel anything they don’t already feel and are open to allowing the pain underneath all the energies to be felt. I have come to understand personally and professionally that the more we allow ourselves to feel ALL of our emotions the less “screaming and fighting” we experience inside. With more consistent flow we can let go and allow a new way of being and living. Doesn’t it sound delicious to let go of the desire to control everything? As we learn to trust, our hearts are nourished and we can begin to experience and re-connect to our peace, joy and creativity. It truly is an inside job waking up in this life. Now is a cosmically powerful time to implement more sustainable ways of responding to ourselves and all of life. HealthyZone is committed to helping you optimize your physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Our focus is on your needs and offering various tools to improve your quality of life. We incorporate LifetimeVibe when called for because it really works! Because it’s easy, effective and enjoyable our clients find it effortless to use consistently and are thrilled to be getting results. A Personal Recipe for Your Individual Health Challenges Deloney explains, “We determine your personal recipe for healthy weight and healing using resonant frequencies.” Using an understanding of resonant frequencies, Dr. Deloney can determine precisely what the body needs to bring it into its optimal fat burning zone and keep it there. This is done by measuring the baseline of each factor being measured (hormone, neurotransmitter, heavy metal, bacteria, virus, organ, etc.), and then the doctor can determine what supplement or formula is needed by observing what the effect of that item is on the baseline (whether it makes it more coherent or less coherent).

Everyone Gains Weight Differently Due to Hormones

Dr. Bryan Deloney, Chesterfield, is bringing one of the newest advancements in natural health and healing to local residents. Deloney is helping patients reverse health challenges, such as excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders, fibromyalgia and autoimmune issues, using the NutriMost Resonant Frequency Technology (NRF).

NRF technology can target your hormone imbalances and get to the cause of your weight gain, overcoming weight loss resistance and solving your weight challenges.

First, patients undergo a fast, painless scan of their body’s cells by using the comprehensive electroimpedance resonant frequency (NRF) technology. This allows Dr. Deloney to take a “hormonal fingerprint” of every factor that affects weight gain, including fat burning, fat storage, metabolism, the organs involved, hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, metals, toxins, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, candida, parasites and nanobacteria. It gives him the capability to measure and assist the body’s innate healing abilities. NRF technology is so advanced and specific that it can determine hormone imbalances, organ function weakness, and much more.

The program displays the results and identifies the biomarkers (vitamins, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, toxins, microbes, etc.) that are out of range regarding the fat burning zone. Once the out-of-range fat biomarkers are identified, the program will determine exactly what is needed to bring the biomarkers back into fat burning. It will identify what is needed nutritionally; but more than that, the foundation of the whole program is the ability to determine the exact “recipe” for each person’s fat burning. The program creates a “recipe” for hormones/ neurotransmitters, a “recipe” for detox and a “recipe” for the fat burning formula.

Let the Balancing and Healing Begin! Once in this balance state and fat burning zone: • You experience no hunger or cravings, unlike other weight loss programs • The typical fat loss is between ½ pound and 2 pounds of fat per day • You will have more energy, better sleep, and you will be in a better mood • Your hormones will become more and more balanced • You will enter a state of autophagy, which helps the body overcome all sorts of health challenges The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System is safe, fast, and effective. You’ll clear out harmful toxins and balance your hormones as you lose fat at an unbelievable pace. Typical results see patients losing 20 – 40 pounds in 40 days. And the best part? The results are permanent. Following your 40 days of fat loss, NutriMost will reset your metabolism and weight set point, so you can keep the weight off for What You Need to Know! good. 4 Natural Remedies for Fibromyalgia by Dr. Dan Gogliotti If you’ve suddenly been feeling aches and pains in your body for some inexplicable reason, then you have to read this. You could be suffering from fibromyalgia, which affects hundreds of thousands of people between the ages of 20 and 50.

Furthermore, taking different combinations of drugs can result in a real problem, especially when you want to slow down or stop the medication. In many cases, some of these pain relievers can be quite addicting, and have some serious side effects!

Now, you may be wondering, what is fibromyalgia and how did you get it?

There are many contributing factors to fibromyalgia, including chronic inflammation and stress (both emotional and physical).

What is Fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia is a chronic inflammatory disorder, characterized by muscle pain, joint pain and fatigue. Patients who suffer from fibromyalgia usually feel these symptoms: Tenderness Stiffness Unbearable pain Chronic tiredness Gastrointestinal problems Sleep disorder problems Concentration problems Depression For a disease with no known cause, fibromyalgia affects a lot of people—at least 5 million in the U.S. alone, and 9 out of 10 people who suffer with fibromyalgia are female. Treating Fibromyalgia With Conventional Drugs Since the leading symptom of fibromyalgia seems to be muscle and body pain, medical doctors have tried to treat the symptoms with conventional drugs including painkillers and antidepressants. However, these methods of treatment do not seem to be effective long-term solutions. First of all, most analgesic painkillers are very mild, and given the level of chronic pain that a majority of people with fibromyalgia experience, the results aren’t very effective at all. If you have fibromyalgia, chances are you’re suffering from all sorts of pains and aches, and taking multiple drug combinations can lead to serious side effects that can drastically interfere with how you live day-to-day life. 22

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Winter 2016

If you really want to fix the problem, you must address the root cause. Many studies suggest that certain lifestyle changes can be more than enough to keep fibromyalgia at bay. If you’re looking for natural remedies for fibromyalgia, consider the following: 1. Eat Anti-Inflammatory Nutrients Inflammation can cause a range of health problems, including muscle and joint pain. A German study found that anti-inflammatory antioxidants found in black and green teas, red onion, broccoli, and tomato can naturally reduce inflammation that can help fibromyalgia. Also, omega-3 fats can naturally reduce inflammation. If you’re going to purchase a fish oil, make sure you only buy a high-quality fish oil, high in antioxidants like astaxanthin and low in mercury. 2. Reduce Stress and Anxiety A review in Neuroscientist found significant association between fibromyalgia and abuse in both adults and children. If you haven’t dealt with past issues in your life, I strongly encourage you to find a good counselor who can help you begin to heal emotionally. Schedule some fun and relaxation into your life! Stress can raise cortisol levels and inflammation markers, which contribute to fibromyalgia symptoms. 3. Seek Chiropractic Care Research published in Best Practice and Research Clinical Rheumatology reports neck trauma causing spinal, joint and muscular injuries increases the risk of developing fibromyalgia. Chiropractic care

works to correct spinal misalignments and correct posture through spinal adjustments and rehabilitative spinal exercises. Also, patients with fibromyalgia have been shown to have hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. Upper cervical spinal adjustments have been shown to have a positive effect by decreasing hyperactivity. 4. Address Nutritional Deficiencies Studies have shown supplementing with magnesium can help with fibromyalgia symptoms and physicians recommend taking 250–300 milligrams twice daily. Some magnesium-rich foods include pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, cocoa, almonds, spinach, halibut and black beans. Try to get as many nutrients as possible from the foods you eat, and supplement with anything that you are still lacking. If you or someone you love is suffering with fibromyalgia, and would like help looking over natural options, I am here to help. Call 314-394-1923 to schedule your consultation today. Experience the Royal Treatment by Stacy Hunsicker

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Winter 2016

Ayurveda is the world’s most ancient system of preventive health care. Developed in India more than 6,000 years ago, the practice, which means knowledge of life, is a natural approach for creating balance and strengthening the body’s natural healing abilities. Located less than four hours from St. Louis in Fairfield, Iowa, The Raj is the only health center in the United States built to offer ayurvedic treatments in a facility built to Indian ayurvedic health standards. Opened in 1993, the Raj continues to receive guidance from a council of Maharishi Ayurveda experts from India who refer to the original classic texts in verifying every step of every procedure offered. It’s beautiful, too, encompassing a French country-style chateau situated on 100 acres of rolling countryside. Ayurvedic treatments are based on the unique biologic energies—or doshas—that govern each person. Vata types have physical and mental qualities that reflect space and air; Pitta types, fire and water and Kapha types, earth and water. Upon arrival at The Raj, my first appointment was with Dr. Mark Toomey, who measured and read my pulse and determined that my doshic state is Pitta-Vata, meaning that I am a natural leader, blunt and motivating. I’m capable of accomplishing great things, but since I tend to push myself past where I should, I need to force myself to rest and rejuvenate. This evaluation would determine not just my treatments for the duration of my stay but meals, snacks and even teas, all of which would work together to restore balance to my body and mind. I was also given lifestyle recommendations to help me maintain that balance. Although meant to be healing, which they were, they were luxurious as well, and when combined with the luxurious accommodations and surroundings, I felt like a Maharani, or Indian queen. If you are looking for a life transforming experience, this is the place. Within just a few days, I began to feel calmer and more centered, yet I was filled with energy. Always eager for an adventure, my significant other joined me on this spa trip. He found that the recommended regime sculpted his body to the point that his love handles disappeared within the week! We weren’t alone in our success: One night at dinner we were joined by a man whose wife had suffered with MS. He brought her to The Raj for treatments and she was out of her wheelchair for the first time in a long time. In addition to treatments, The Raj offers educational elements, making it a healing retreat for both mind and body. While visiting, we attended two classes on Transcendental Meditation™ and how it enhances one’s life and can positively affect the brain. One of the evening lectures went deeper into the ayurvedic lifestyle and doshas. The Raj is America’s flagship health center and spa based on natural prevention-oriented Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is world-renowned for bringing to light in a scientific, systematic manner the complete vedic science of consciousness. This man paved the way for Deepak Chopra. This is the Maharishi that John Lennon and the Beatles followed. The song “Dear Prudence” was written when their friend and Mia Farrow’s sister, Prudence, would sit in meditation for longer periods rather than come out to play at the ashram. The Maharishi is the founder of Transcendental Meditation Technique for Inner Peace and Wellness. It takes a lot to impress my brilliant partner. Yet he couldn’t stop raving about the weekend, “The Raj is a healing and education center, this was no leisure spa trip for relaxation and rejuvenation”. I agreed, and was surprisingly speechless, given that it takes a lot to quiet this Pitta-Vata. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Winter 2016

Monterey Bay Family Spa Escape What do you do for the man who has it all for his birthday? I nailed this one with a trip to Intercontinental The Clement Monterey, where we celebrated a special birthday as well as his daughter’s engagement. We were blessed with 70 degree and sunny weather. Although we could not possibly pack in all of the available adventures of the Central California Coast we prioritized with incredible seafood meals, a tour of the Monterey Aquarium, a drive down the coast that the “kids” insisted was a must do and how right they were! A whale watching charter out of Fisherman’s Wharf, a bike ride on the 18 mile paved pathway and scuba diving will have to wait until next time. The views were absolutely breathtaking. Just a short drive to Big Sur, the River Inn offered a great meal nestled among the giant

Set along Monterey’s historic Cannery Row just steps from the Aquarium and overlooking Monterey Bay, the 223-room hotel is breezy and bright. redwoods. Chairs were available for lounging in the river. A stop in Carmel on the return route was great to walk off lunch, and for some window shopping and touring their incredible art galleries. The Spa at Intercontinental The Clement Monterey was a welcome oasis after a day in the great outdoors. After being greeted by spa director, Camille Malcom, we relaxed in the luxurious surroundings as we waited for couples massage treatments. An hour later, refreshed and relaxed, we made our way back to our lovely rooms, happy that we would be returning the next day for facials. We had a post-facial brunch at the hotel’s in-house C Restaurant, which serves sustainable seafood, steaks and incredible homemade desserts (including a sundae with homemade ice cream) in a light-filled

space overlooking the bay. Brunch—don’t miss the lobster omelet—was exquisite. The hotel and restaurant staff at Intercontinental The Clement Monterey were all top notch. The spa staff and therapists were world class. This is now one of my favorite boutique hotels and spa. The ‘kids” last hurrah would be paddle boarding with the otters and sea lions in the bay while sadly, we headed to the airport and home. It was a memorable, whirlwind trip. I leave you with the best kept secret in Monterey. Just out the back door of Intercontinental The Clement Monterey along that paved path sits a tea house with yoga classes and raw organic juice. It doesn’t get more convenient than that!

Following His Passion and Making a Dream a Reality: Jeff Busbee and Bikram Yoga Chesterfield

by Maggie Hallam

In February 2015, Jeff Busbee made a decision that changed his life forever: he quit his career as an aviation mechanic – a job he had held for the past 18 years – and purchased Bikram Yoga Chesterfield, making his dream of owning a yoga studio a reality. But that wasn’t always a dream of his. In fact, eight years ago, Busbee had never even heard of Bikram yoga. Luckily for him though, he found Bikram yoga at a time when he desperately needed a change. At 40 years old, Busbee was a wreck. He was way overweight, he drank a lot, and his body continued to grow stiffer and stiffer after years of working as an airplane mechanic. Flash forward almost eight years later to present day, and he is a new man, thanks to yoga. 34

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Winter 2016

Busbee first learned about Bikram yoga on TV and was intrigued by its detoxifying qualities and ability to help with flexibility. He decided to give it a shot, but it was much easier said than done; Busbee sat in the parking lot of the studio (the same studio he now owns) five times before actually getting the courage to walk inside. But as soon as he took his first class, he knew it was just what he needed – to regain his mobility, to allow him to continue his aviation career (he credits this yoga to buying him seven more years as a mechanic), to lose the excess weight, to challenge himself, and to grow. Before he found yoga, Busbee tried to stay active; he would run and lift weights, but stiff knees and hips eventually put an end to his running days, and he quit the weights after realizing that although they made him stronger, they also made him hungrier – and therefore, bigger.

It wasn’t until he began practicing yoga – specifically, Bikram yoga – that he actually found something he enjoyed that also worked his entire body and provided positive results. “I’ve lost 60 pounds since starting yoga, and I feel 100 times better,” Busbee said. “I like the heat of Bikram yoga, the longer classes, and that you know what to expect and can build on your practice. All Bikram classes are 26 postures and two breathing exercises, and you do everything two times – your first set is seeing where your body is at today, and in the second set you work on your body today, digging a little deeper and building off yourself from within.” Busbee appreciates both the physical and mental challenges of yoga, and like many yogis, it truly helps him feel better in all aspects of his life. He wakes up each morning feeling refreshed and proud knowing that he’s better than he was the morning before. “It just works,” Busbee said. “And I believe in it. I believe in it so much that I quit my career for it.” Busbee’s passion for the practice is ultimately what led him to purchase Bikram Yoga Chesterfield, but even before becoming the studio’s owner, Busbee had always remained disciplined in his yoga. For the first four years of his practice, he took a class after work six days a week. For the next two years, after completing the mentally and physically challenging 9-week instructor training course, he doubled up – he would go to work each day, then take a class before teaching one himself. And now, as the studio’s sole owner and main instructor, Busbee spends much of his time at the studio, teaching about 15 classes a week in addition to regularly participating as a student and handling all the day-to-day tasks of owning and operating a business.

But that’s not to say he does it all by himself. Busbee employs two other certified instructors at the studio, and Crystal Garrison, his fellow yogi and girlfriend of almost four years (the couple met through yoga, of course), plays a vital role by helping at the studio whenever and however possible. “I am behind the scenes – hanging and rolling mats, doing loads of laundry,” Garrison said. “I also like to believe I give him the strength to see in himself what I see when I look at him. He is an amazing man.” Garrison’s support, coupled with Busbee’s deep passion for yoga, keeps him motivated, even on the tough days. “Close to 100 people a day come through here, and I watch them day after day as they get better,” Busbee said. “It’s a rewarding job. It’s hard, but it’s worth it.” Bikram Yoga is located on Baxter Road in Chesterfield. Visit bikramyogachesterfield.com for rates, a weekly schedule, and an overview of the studio and the Bikram Yoga practice. Reservations are not required for classes.

Maintaining Your Machine “Not only must you be able to locate the obstruction, but you must have the skill to remove it.”

-Andrew Taylor Still, DO, MD Founder of Osteopathy

by Christopher S. Ngo, DO Sometimes we take for granted that the human body is an amazing machine. It is extremely durable, complex, and is fully self regulating. The body is constantly active, running 24/7 while simultaneously able to withstand stresses placed upon it. In addition, the parts of the body are extremely intricate and interconnected. Science is constantly making new discoveries about how the body works and functions. Despite how much activity is occurring within the body, we are unaware of the majority of these processes. The body subconsciously knows how to repair and manage its needs by itself. However, like any machine, the body can still break down. Constant wear and tear, injury or trauma, repetitive motions, stress; all takes its toll on the body’s parts. Malfunctioning of these parts may manifest as pain, discomfort, decreased function, inflammation, or fatigue. What we call disease is simply a broken part or process no

longer able to function properly. Fortunately, many of these parts can be repaired before permanent damage occurs. When we experience simple pains and aches, this is similar to a warning indicator on your car dashboard or computer. Something should be checked before a more severe problem occurs. If we ignore the issue long enough, permanent damage may result, requiring a replacement. An osteopathic physician is simply a technician for an extremely complicated machine. Through simple touch, they are able to evaluate and localize the problem at its cause and correct the malfunctioning part. For the majority of cases, this correction restores the self regulating component of the body. This allows healing to occur, relieves discomfort, and gives the patient the ability to increase their activity and live their life again.

Christopher S. Ngo, DO, is board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and owner of Osteopathic Horizons located at Stillpointe Wellness Center 2135 Dorothy Dr, Ste. 6, Belleville, IL 62223. 5 Simple & Powerful Benefits of Yoga The new year offers a chance to start fresh and yoga is a way to create positive change. The science of yoga is around 3500 years old. It can be the body’s catalyst for change. The word yoga is a Sanskrit word that means to yoke or bind or to create union. It is a practice that unifies soul, mind, breath and body together as a whole. When we are in alignment we step into the universal flow and into the present moment. There is a multitude of documented research outlining the benefits of a yoga practice. Here are just a few to get you started in the right direction in the new year: 1. Intention: Set a goal for the time on your mat and for your day. This focused thought is the first step in making your goals become reality. 2. Participate: The practice of yoga with others in a studio setting triggers the mind that you are in an atmosphere where the body and mind can now relax and settle. This special time for yourself will enhance your day and you will be more productive. 3. Poses: Learn proper yoga poses to improve your flexibility, strength and balance. A simple pose such as legs up the wall can nourish your immune system. You will become aware of your improved progress over time, building not only physical strength but also improved self esteem and emotional balance.

by Jill Dunlap

4. Breath (Pranayama): Learn the importance of breath work and how it affects your overall well being. Focus on diaphragmatic breathing by lying on your back, placing your hand on belly and upper chest, taking a deep breath into your belly and concentrating on the rise and fall of your hand. This connection to your breath will bring more awareness to your body and breath and you will become more present in life. 5. Meditation: Learn how meditation, along with the use of a mantra, will teach you to bat-away and release the bombardment of thoughts that keeps your mind racing and derails your meditation. The use of a mantra such as “OM” or “SoHum” will help you focus. Wildwood Yoga offers the opportunity to build a neighborhood community where yoga is not only about poses and a practice, but also a place where you will learn techniques that will provide you with tools to make changes to support a new and improved lifestyle. Make the practice of yoga part of your new year’s resolution by joining our community at Wildwood Yoga & Wellness. Come join us at Wildwood Yoga & Wellness in the Wildwood Square center on Highway 109 next to the YMCA.

Form and Alignment Through Pilates by Shawn Grow Words from Pilates devotees are a testament to the wide-reaching impact this exercise can have: “When I first started practicing Pilates at Grow-Fit Studios, I relied on a walker; after three months of practice, I was walking steadily on my own.” “I am measurably taller from doing Pilates and more conscious of how I stand and sit. My gratitude runs deep for Grow-Fit Studio.” For those unfamiliar with Pilates, founder Joseph Pilates described it best: “The complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.” Every Pilates session at Grow-Fit Studio focuses on the entire body. By concentrating on form and alignment, we learn to work in a balanced and symmetrical way. Quality of movement (not quantity) is the emphasis of Pilates workouts. Pilates teaches us how to be in the moment. Its breathing technique

enables us to utilize our core to center and balance ourselves. GrowFit Studio in Town & Country is an ideal place to begin or continue growing in mind/body connection through fitness. One unique element of the studio is the 45-minute interval-training classes grounded in Pilates principles. As many as four clients participate in a class, so personal attention and correction of form are possible. As our awareness broadens with Pilates movements, it carries over to our daily life. Attention to breath and mind brings calmness and fluidity to movement and reduces tension. Pilates helps to create a body that can stretch and bend to meet the daily demands and flow of life. Best of all, after a Pilates session, we don’t have to leave behind what we learned – we take it with us wherever we go. Shawn Grow is owner of Grow-Fit Pilates & Fitness Studio in Town & Country. Grow is a certified Stott Pilates instructor with eight years teaching experience. More information at grow-fit.com, by email at shawn@grow-fit.com or by calling 314-699-6024.

Body Wellness and Healing

by Becky Brittain, Ph.D, R-DMT When you are experiencing chronic pain or emotional discomfort, you may come to believe that you cannot heal or get better. However, the truth is that we all live in a body vessel that can learn to renew its health, ease, and wellness. This restorative process starts with honoring your body’s intelligence and innate healing capacities. As a body-mind psychotherapist, dance-movement therapist, and teacher of somatic psychology, I am well acquainted with the vastness, elegance, and depth of the body-mind-soul terrain. I have witnessed and facilitated recuperative healing on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. This healing process requires forming a new positive relationship with your body. Become aware of your sensations and feel them. This bodily sensing is different from thinking. Develop a sense of safety and comfort as you learn to relax, breathe, and listen to your body. Invite your body to tell you what it needs. Different body parts can hold different and varied feelings of joy, fear, anger, rage, and sadness. These layers of feelings may contribute to your illness or chronic pain. The more that you pay attention to the messages that your body sends, the better you can let go of old stored feelings. Your

personal journey may have involved physical and /or psychological suffering at an early age. Knowing your somatic history and early patterning allows you to reconnect to your past to feel and release old unconscious patterns and addictive habits that no longer serve you. Christine Caldwell, a somatic therapist, describes this process in her book, Getting Our Bodies Back. She states “whatever the distance, reclaiming and reoccupying our bodies is the way toward affirming happiness, toward reconnecting with the exquisite beauty of life.” The healing steps in her therapeutic approach involve moving from awareness, to owning, to acceptance, and to action. Your health greatly benefits when you can change the way you habitually react to events in the present that echo your past. You become lighter, more open and alive. Develop a daily somatic practice that includes checking in with yourself, relaxing, and moving in ways that your own body finds satisfying. Feel into your moves. Glide when you stride and smile. Notice and soften your holding of tension. You can consciously create an atmosphere within that makes your cells and body parts feel happy, noticed, and loved. This can be the first step toward wellness and healing.

Becky Brittain, Ph.D., is a bodycentered psychotherapist, registered dance movement therapist and adjunct professor at Washington University who teaches Authentic Movement. More information at EmbodyYourGreatness.com or email Becky@EmbodyYourGreatness.com.

The Time is NOW! by MJ Corcoran It is a new year, a new opportunity! There will never be another NOW! When it comes to our life and creating our Best Life, it is our choice and our responsibility. Sometimes the process of knowing what we want starts with listing what we don't want. And then, put your energy and focus on those things you want, which will attract more of what you want. Pay attention to where your thoughts have built a home. Notice and reflect on these coaching questions. Q: 1. How do I choose to start my day? Do I choose gratitude and appreciation to begin each new day? Or do I choose to complain about “having” to go to work, take care of kids, make dinner, workout? Q: 2. What words do I choose when I speak of my life, situation, friends and family? Are they positive? Do I choose to see the gifts of any situation? Or, do I choose to blame everyone and everything for my situation? Q: 3. How do I choose to show up in the world? Do I contribute to the community and the greater good? Or do I contaminate my community with hatred, fear and confusion? Again, this is an opportunity for a new beginning starting NOW! Yes, the world has changed and yes there are situations that happen! We have a choice in how we respond to the situation. When we are in fear we tend to react or overreact to our situation. When we are reacting or overreacting to situations, we create more drama. If you want it different, do it different, think of it in a different way, let go of disappointment and move forward. 44

What are the first steps to creating your Best Life? 1. Claim it! 2. List what it is you want in your life that you do not have right now. Use this list to begin taking action toward having what you want. Each day take one small step toward making things happen. For example, make a call, set an appointment, research, get more information about what you think you want, do the work. And watch things unfold. Within a short period of time you will notice changes toward what you want. Bump up your level of responsibility to your dreams and watch it happen. All we have is NOW! Since 2011, MJ has served as a national spokesperson for Anheuser-Busch “Family Talk”, a drinking prevention initiative that focuses on family first. MJ is well known for her parenting classes and her family coaching business. All About Kids2 offers family coaching for all families. She is unique in that she offers “house calls” and phone consultations.

Isn’t it about time the girls have their turn? by Dr. Russell T. Imboden, DO While men have long been using Viagra to treat sexual dysfunction, similar options have not been as widely available to women. However, a new procedure, called the O-Shot (formally, the Orgasm Shot) helps women, particularly the 83 percent of female patients who suffer from sexual dysfunction or urinary incontinence, improve their sex lives. The O-Shot is a simple, safe and natural therapeutic option for treating sexual dysfunction of the clitoral-urethral-vaginal (CUV) complex. It uses the preparation and injection of blood-derived growth factors – autologous (self-donor) platelet rich plasma (PRP) cells – to rejuvenate the vagina and to therefore improve sex. PRP injected into those precise locations increases blood flow, oxygen, and nutrition to the damaged areas by forming new blood vessels, resulting in tissue formation and nerve regeneration, and increasing the volume, function and relief of dysfunction in the area applied. The O-Shot can help fix a variety of issues, including dyspareunia (painful intercourse), female sexual dysfunction, female sexual arousal disorder, female orgasmic disorder, hypoactive sexual arousal disorder (low

desire), hyperactive bladder disorder, and urinary incontinence, which is the number one cause of sexual dysfunction in women. It restores not only the function of the vagina, but it also restores the entire appearance. Here’s how it works: Local anesthetic cream is applied to the injection sites, and PRP is then injected at those precise locations. These treatments rejuvenate the “orgasm system” by stimulating stem cells found in the tissue. New blood vessels and sensory cells are formed and begin to increase function and improve sensitivity. The entire procedure takes less than 15 minutes and requires no down time. Results are typically seen within a week, and many patients experience improvements such as increased sensitivity, heightened arousal and improved function within three weeks. Physician, scientist, inventor, author and healer Dr. Russell T. Imboden, D.O., practices in St. Peters and is one of the few doctors in the country who offers the O-Shot. He focuses on Metabolic & Age Management Medicine and has become one of the best in the country, treating patients from many parts of the United States. Dr. Imboden, a 1987 graduate of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, was trained under Dr.

Charles Runels, MD, who, striving to change the social stigma associated with women’s sexual problems (as compared to men’s sexual problems, an open area of medicine), created the O-Shot procedure. Dr. Imboden’s practice is located on Jungermann Road in St. Peters. To learn more about the O-Shot and Dr. Imboden’s services, visit drrussellimboden.com.

Quiet & Peaceful in a Small Space

Advice from your friendly local Landscape Architects.

by Richard Poynter We so often get questions surrounding the creation of peaceful or quiet outdoor space, in what people see as an area that they believe is either too small or too big. Sometimes small spaces are already cozy but need natural elements and efficient use of space. For large areas, it’s about creating that cozy environment with Pergolas for a ceiling or a screening wall, be it a fence, green plant backdrop or the brick wall of your garage, any of these can work and many times you already have some of the basics there to work with.

The layout becomes important based on how you plan to use the space. Multiple uses of outdoor spaces are common, so if you like a work out or yoga area but will also use the area with your family as a gathering space, these can coexist. Natural material choices like wood, stone, plants and water can go a long way in softening and creating cozy environments for outdoor living spaces. We are always here to help so feel free to call or email us if you need advice about your home.

The Hidden Gift in the New Year

by Meg Berry

What an opportunity the New Year creates for us! Symbolically, we are greeted with a fresh beginning…a chance to choose a new direction and embrace possibilities. However, there is also another gift that this time of transition gives that is often overlooked and is essential for the success of our new resolutions…and that is understanding and fully embracing the wisdom of the past. Often, we are so eager to move forward and set a new course of change and abundance, that we miss the life lessons that our experiences have brought us this past year.

48

energy. If we deny our authentic truth, our solid foundation is undermined and the ability to manifest future goals and desires is sabotaged. We find ourselves blocked as our energetic power goes to resistance. However, if we welcome our past, seek the wisdom and healing in those experiences, then we move back into balance and stand powerfully as we move forward.

Our seat of authentic power resides in the present moment. When we begin to fathom that the “now” is all that technically exists, we understand it is only in each moment that we can have a thought, make a decision, take action, utilize our senses or truly experience anything. We can dream about the future and remember the past, but the truth of our being is only in the present. Our point of perfect balance, strength and power is when we acknowledge and connect to the life force energy of the HERE AND NOW, which contains both the unlimited potential of the future and the abundant wisdom of the past. When we resist either embracing our past or facing our future, our seat of power becomes imbalanced and unstable. Hence, we set ourselves up for an emotional or spiritual “fall” when we don’t honor the fullness of our experience.

Our life experience, including the hurts, heartaches, disease and dysfunction, is a great gift that we overlook. Tucked into each moment of our past is the opportunity to receive a gift of grace or the blessing of a lesson. It is easy to hold dear the moments of love and connection but what can be even more illuminating are those past memories that teach us where we want to shift. Those moments of fear and disconnection empower us to choose new behaviors, new attitudes, new relationships and new perceptions…new resolutions! Although we view it as baggage, those experiences are actually the treasure chests of self awareness, inspiration and motivation. When we are willing to open those hidden boxes, the light dispels the dark and we are able to utilize each and every event, memory and interaction for our highest good. We open a space for creativity, expansion, and healing when we focus our energy on acceptance rather than resistance. Our new year resolutions move from hollow wishes to intentions powered with clarity, courage and compassion.

This is one of the reasons our resolutions are often not successful. Avoiding our past pain, shame, trauma and mistakes uses valuable

As we enjoy the celebration of a new year, let us recognize it is an important and powerful time to embrace balance and the fullness of our truth…the gift of future as well as past, so that we can stand powerfully in the ever present miracle of NOW! Is it in our DNA? by Edith James As women, many of us work every day to take care of ourselves in a myriad of disciplines: practicing yoga, eating healthy foods, meditating, and more. We read “The Miracle Morning” and “The Slight Edge” for inspiration and motivation. We hold ourselves up and are mindful of our language – both in our heads and spoken aloud. We know when we feel good and our esteem is shining. Yet, despite all these efforts to keep ourselves healthy in both body and mind, we wear shoes that hurt our feet and cause our brows to furrow from the distraction of toes jammed into shoes with room for only four toes – all in the name of fashion. We kick our shoes off as soon as we get in the car, driving ourselves home barefoot and thinking, “Damn! Do I really have to put these back on to walk in the house? These shoes hurt, but they look so damn good!” Why is it that slipping on a pair of high heels makes us feel more “womanly?” No matter how cute the shoes are or how good we think they make us look, in reality, the shoes are doing more harm than good. Grandmother told me that when your shoes hurt, it wrinkles your face – and that’s definitely not what we want to happen! When we wear healthy footwear, we are making deposits into our Feet Health Account (FHA). But when we wear shoes with unrealistic shapes and heel heights, we are withdrawing from our FHA. Some women go bankrupt and give themselves corns, calluses, bunions and hammer toes – all of which are caused from footwear, as there is no genetic code for these conditions (and none of these conditions exist in non-shoe wearing societies). At Comfort Shoe Specialists, we help women with “Cute Shoe Rescue” by modifying their current shoe wardrobe to provide more support and more soling under the balls of the feet. Comfort Shoe Specialists is dedicated to providing both style and toe room in fashionable designs. Ziera is fully cooperative with tasteful shoes that come in widths that fit and have balanced comfort, provided with arch supports that can be replaced with personal orthotics. Too good to be true? You may need to try them on to believe it. For every try-on during January and February, you will receive an entry for your own FREE pair of comfortable and stylish shoes (the drawing will be held on March 4). What a way to take care of our “Cute Shoes Gene!”

No More Resolutions … DECIDE by Dr. David Trybus, DC This is the time of year, January 1st to be specific, that people set and proclaim resolutions in “hopes” of achieving them, somehow. Other people plan things out with intricate detail to have a sure path to achieving their goals or resolutions. Do you ever wonder why the majority of people from either group end up with the same result by the end of the month? The latest statistic I could find was that between 88 and 92 percent of New Year's resolutions fail by January 15th. Where do you fall on this scale? Do you set and conquer OR set and hope? Maybe you don’t even set resolutions, you don’t believe in them? Yet, is there a part of your life that you are not happy with? Resolutions can be traced back to the times of the Babylonians making promises on the new year to better their life. After working with thousands of people, helping them create a better and more fulfilling life, I have found that the problem doesn't come down to creating a list. Actually, that is only the first step. You must do one thing with that resolution or goal: you must DECIDE that you are committed to it 100 percent! Not 99, 95 or even 90 percent; if you are setting a resolution you must decide and commit to achieving it 100 percent. This is the secret. What I have found with the successful people I have worked with personally is that they really want the result and they are committed to the journey. Part of my goal setting process with people is to identify the areas they want to change in their life and then find out why they haven't achieved it yet. Is it due to your commitment or maybe there is an emotional block? You know it is an emotional issue when you decide 100 percent that you are ready for this result and “wham!”, something happens out of the blue and you're not sure why, but your commitment level instantly changed. You may even give up and say what most others say in this instance; “resolutions don’t work and I don’t even know why I set them.”

Transformation starts with you.

Move Easily Through Change by Marilyn Eagen The past few years we have been experiencing incredible changes in our communities, country and entire world. The new year will be showing us changes that are going to feel even bigger and faster than before. Some of us will strongly feel these shifts, others may not. Wherever you are with this movement is perfect for you. As we move into this year, I am encouraging everyone to pay attention to what presents in each moment, be gentle with yourself and breathe! Recently, my husband and I made a big decision to purchase a property that is home to my business as a longtime energy worker. I simply followed my guidance and filled myself with divine trust. However, this exciting venture brought forth the deepest doubts and fears that laid inside me. These were extremely old energies that I thought had been released. The interesting piece is that everything fell into place easily and quickly as the perfect people to help me with this project showed up just as I needed them. I am clear in knowing that this space will beautifully serve myself, my family, the work I do and the community. However, I am not exactly sure how this will look. This is the piece that opened up the fear. I knew that this was the right decision for us, as everything moved forward magically. What I learned is when the fear energy crept in, I had to stop long enough to take a breath and then continue to move through the energy presenting itself to me. Pushing it away or pushing through it did not serve me or the situation. Moving through, allowing myself to breathe and feel is what worked. I took the same approach while allowing the miracles that were happening along the

way – simply paying attention to what was presented to me in each moment. As we all move into another year of swift changes, remember to pay attention to what presents for you, breathe, and continue to move through it with lots of divine trust. One of the breathing techniques that I found most helpful for releasing and opening up to new possibilities is as follows: Inhale with your mouth open and exhale fully. Release whatever sound wants to come out. Could be AHHHH, or HUUHHH or something much louder or no sound at all. Go with whatever shows up and continue to breathe for at least one minute, maybe longer. The mouth open sometimes works well as it doesn’t allow you to hold anything in, opening up more space for movement. It takes only 17 seconds for an energy shift to take place, so keep that energy moving until you feel better. At that point, ask yourself what your next step is and listen to what your body and mind and spirit are telling you. Play with this technique and see how it feels to you. There are many more energetic tools available to allow each of us to connect into our highest potential. Marilyn Eagen of Holistic Harmony Lifecare is a certified Energy Medicine Practitioner, Certified Life Coach and a Reiki Master Teacher in Usui, Karuna, Holy Fire and Celestial Reiki. She continues to learn as a student of many more modalities. Find her at www.marilyneagen. com and at The Peace Place 2841 Barrett Station Rd. St. Louis, MO 63021. 314-330-4156.

As a reminder...cooking takes time, especially when it's made to order and the person cooking it loves what they do!” Schloss said. On top of delicious and nutritious food served up with love, Schloss and Gralnick have taken the time to create a space that accommodates all kinds of people. From the reclaimed wood to the original concrete floor to the local art hanging on the wall that's for sale, it's a fine balance of modern meets bohemian. The lighting is always just right and the music selection is tuned to perfection. Seedz Cafe plans to open Seedz Provisions at 736 Demun to accommodate the growing need for grab-and-go options in the neighborhood and the surrounding businesses as early as February or March 2016. For a while now, hardcore foodies have dismissed the Demun Neighborhood as a quiet little coffee gathering place. The local business owners plan to resurrect the Demun Business District and really make it stand out – Seedz Cafe is planning on staying a while and only intends to get better. Seedz Cafe is located at 6344 South Rosebury in Clayton’s Demun neighborhood. For the menu, hours, gatherings and more, visit seedzcafe.com. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Winter 2016

Opening Yourself to Change

by Joan Krueger How is filing like hypnosis? This isn't an analogy question from a college entrance exam. It's a helpful way of understanding how behavior change through hypnosis works. For many, there's a kind of mystery surrounding hypnosis, especially regarding its use as therapy for enabling life changes. Let's unravel this mystery. Our conscious minds contain our active thoughts. In contrast, our subconscious minds hold information that drives our behavior. Think of the subconscious as a big filing cabinet that holds records of all of our experiences. Our habits, behaviors, responses, reactions, memories and emotions are stored there. There is a file for everything about us. Hypnosis is the process of communicating with the subconscious mind and accessing these files. Prior to a hypnosis session, your hypnotherapist asks specific questions about desired changes. This identifies the file from which you are currently working. Hypnosis gets the subconscious part of our minds to open with intention-- like opening a filing cabinet drawer so a new file can be added about how you want to function. For example, you may want to become a non-

smoker, acquire different eating habits or be more confident. After a session focused on these changes, your mind has new information to begin to work from; there is no need to keep returning to and working from old information. With hypnosis, no one can be made to do anything they don't want to do. For hypnosis to work, one must be willing to accept change because the conscious mind is still aware of what is going on. At all times, the client has complete power of selectivity. We react only to suggestions that are reasonable and pleasing. Many individuals achieve their goals through guidance they receive from hypnosis. Joan Krueger is a certified hypnotherapist with an office in Kirkwood where she helps clients achieve positive life changes. More information at jfkhypnosis.com or by calling 314-962-7558. LISTEN What’s Your Word? by Rebecca Wiederkehr, LCSW This is the time of year when people are making long and short term goals and New Year’s resolutions and creating vision boards to assist in keeping these goals and resolutions. It can become overwhelming. Often these go by the wayside rather quickly. We do this because the new year is time for new beginnings. There are those behaviors and habits that keep getting in the way of progress. We want change. There is something that possibly could work more efficiently. That is to choose one word. We can dig deep inside to find a word that fits us, that speaks to the changes we wish to make. One option is to ask ourself such questions as “Who am I?” “What do I want?” “How do I want my life to be?” Focus on the positive – what we want. It takes much wasted time and energy to focus on what we don’t want instead of what we do want. We can change this word monthly, every six months or keep it for a year. Choose a word. Here are a few examples: simplify, appreciate, gentle, breathe, joy, balance, peace, focus, thrive, blessed, health. What word is appealing? For our purposes here, I choose the word LISTEN for the year. We can explore that word to its depths. Observe good listeners on all levels. These people are present to everything, it seems.

Not only do they zero in on what a person is saying, being totally present to the speaker/ sharer, they also walk through the world from a different place. It seems they are listening when in nature or in the grocery store. Whatever they are doing, wherever they are, they are listening. There is a deliberateness and awareness slowing them down to take things in at a deeper level. It is as if the person is “listening” with all five senses, not only hearing. There are people who can be in an extended family gathering or a party, for instance, and leave knowing great detail about several members in the group. Others present at the same party leave not knowing any of this information. Those with the information are your gifted listeners. To take a year to focus on listening and looking into the very soul of another, hearing them at a deeper level, we hear what they are not saying as well as what they are saying. This is a healthy goal. One of the real challenges and a primary goal could be to learn to listen to our own soul and depth of being. We can learn to listen to our innate wisdom that is with us at all times. Since one of the greatest gifts we can give another is to listen to them with full awareness, why don’t we give this to ourselves, as well? In fact, taking the time to meditate, being quiet without distractions and focusing on our own unique genius within could be the

very gift for us to be able to take the word “listen” to all areas of our life. Here are a few tools to assist you: Journal with your word; meditate with it. Practice yoga and mindfulness. Keep a victory log with your successes. Be gentle with yourself. We have to want something badly enough to commit to choosing a word. We have to be longing for the change to be who we want to be and how we want to be. The secret is it is all already there. We have it. Let’s find it. Rebecca Wiederkehr, LCSW, assists people in releasing stuck trauma as well as supporting personal and spiritual growth within relationships with self and others. You vs. Yester-You

Game On! by Melissa Cynova There is a lot of pressure to bring change into your life at the start of a new year. You can’t look at a magazine or a website without seeing an ad encouraging you to get fit, change your diet, change your wardrobe, change your habits, change yourself. As hard as you work on yourself – internally and externally – the implication is that you’re still not good enough. My question is – are you good enough for what? For whom? When are you going to be finished with this race to an ever-changing finish line? When will happiness come? It’s difficult to move through the world without measuring yourself against everything you see. It’s not just the advertisements anymore, it’s Pinterest and Facebook and all of those ways to hold your life up to someone else’s and walk away disappointed. It’s like you’re running a race against ever changing, unknown opponents with an invisible finish line that keeps moving. Sounds fun, right? I have done tarot readings for almost 30 years for thousands of clients, and I can tell you – the happiest people I’ve ever met compare themselves to themselves. That’s it. They look back at how much they’ve overcome and accomplished and look forward to new

challenges. And right now - in the moment? They look at where they’re standing and see the hard work that got them here. It doesn’t matter how much money they have or what they look like. What matters is that they’ve moved forward, they haven’t given up and stalled in place. Instead of spending your time fuming at the fact that someone else has a perfect life (secret – they don’t, they’re faking it) look to where you were ten years ago, five years ago...even one year ago. How have you grown and matured? What beautiful things are only in your life because of the imagined missteps of the past? It’s kind of an amazing exercise – this gratitude for Self. After you’ve forgiven yourself for being human, look toward the future. Since looking into the future is my job, I’ve got some advice for you. Challenge yourself. Never choose to stay silent. Keep people around you who make you smile and laugh. Keep seeking out your most authentic self. Most importantly, don’t compare yourself to anyone but yourself. You can’t win a game that’s always changing, and you can’t lose a game that you choose not to play.

Melissa Cynova is owner of Little Fox Tarot and has been reading tarot cards and teaching classes since 1989. She can be found in the St. Louis area and is available for personal readings, parties and beginner and advanced tarot classes. She’ll be attending the Y&S Living Fit Expo on January 30th and will be presenting at the NorthWest Tarot Symposium in March 2016. Look for her first book from Llewellyn Publishing in 2016. You can reach Melissa at lis@littlefoxtarot. com. She is on Twitter, tumblr and Instagram under Little Fox Tarot. Go ahead and schedule a reading – she already knows you want one.

Y&S Interview

I Love Juice I Love Juice is coming to St. Louis. Yoga & Spa Magazine interviewed franchisee Carolyn Triplett to get the juicy details.

Y&S: Tell us about I Love Juice: ILJ: Juice Bar is overwhelmingly vegan, gluten-free, organic when possible, and always uses 100 percent whole fruits and vegetables. Simply said, we are a “I want to eat healthy and feel great” type place, offering yummies like our Super Greens juice with local wheat grass, or our superfoods salad with kale, spinach, organic quinoa and fresh-juiced lemon dressing. In season, we purchase directly from local farms whenever possible and take great pride in offering an assortment of items from other local partners year-round.

66

husband Jonathan Dowd, and our business partners Lauren and JB Brunner decided to close the gap to healthy beverages and foods by franchising a brand we have grown to love: I Love Juice Bar. My husband was able to rebound from a major accident with no surgery, I was able to heal my hypothyroidism, and our partners were able to rid their daughter of seizures all from consuming healthy and nutritious foods. If you are what you eat, then we want everyone in St. Louis to be a kale and spinach packed Green Smoothie, or a nutrient dense Acai Bowl. We want I Love Juice Bar to be the place to go to get healthy.

Our extensive smoothie menu is comprised of either a coconut milk or fresh-juiced fruit or vegetable base, organic greens, frozen fruits, and various organic superfoods such as matcha powder, bee pollen, spirulina, maca powder, chia seeds, and goji berries. We are truly delighted to create greattasting, super-nutritious juices, smoothies and foods – if your favorite thing is not on our menu just let us know! We have fun at what we do and look forward to being of service to you in any capacity.

Y&S: What are the benefits of drinking raw organic juice? ILJ: Raw juice is the most efficient way to get vitamins and minerals into the body. If the fiber is removed from fruits and vegetables, the remaining juice is packed with nutrients and is easily absorbed into the body. Digesting fiber is difficult for most people and can be quite taxing on the body; drinking juice is an efficient and effective way to flood your body with nutrients. We offer customizable juice cleanses, we sell juice by the ounce, and we also sell growlers of your favorite made-to-order juice for the whole family. We also offer fresh-juiced ginger, lemon, and pineapple juice to ease digestion and boost immunity, and fresh organic wheatgrass shots for an extra kick of vitamins and minerals!

Y&S: How did you become an I Love Juice owner? ILJ: After realizing St. Louis has very few options for fresh juice and no options for healthy, nutritious smoothies, myself, my

Y&S: How many stores will be opening in St. Louis and when? ILJ: We hope to open our first store in March 2016, with at least three to follow. We have signed an Area Development Agreement

with Juice Bar, so we can open as many as St. Louisans want! Y&S: What are some of your favorite I Love Juice drinks? ILJ: My favorite juice is Fresh Greens: a cucumber and celery based juice with spinach, kale, and a hint of lemon. So many greens in one cup! My favorite smoothie is the Berry Good: organic coconut milk, banana, blueberries, raw organic cashews, and a lemon half. Sometimes, I’ll add spinach and peanut butter to make it a meal on the go! My husband’s favorite juice is our Orange You Glad: a carrot and apple base with mint, pineapple, ginger and lemon juice. His favorite smoothie is the Coco Bananaorganic coconut milk, organic cacao powder, spinach, banana, and peanut butter. Our partners, Lauren and JB, really enjoy the Mint To Be: fresh organic apple juice, coconut milk, mango, banana, and fresh mint leaves, and The Doc- fresh juiced apples, fresh juiced ginger, mint leaves, spinach, kale, a lemon half, bananas, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, spirulina, and probiotics.
