Optimal Living One of the key benefits to optimal health is the ability to live a more full and productive life. For some this may feel a daunting task, but living your optimal lifestyle is attainable. The key is to do your inner work first. What is inner work? It is the work of changing your inner belief system, of healing your wounds. Doing inner work is hard because it is emotional work, but it is the most important work we can do. To succeed we must stop avoiding our emotions. We must stop running from the whip of fear and chasing the carrot of desire. Pushing forward in survival mode will not bring more money or more harmony. My experience has been that avoiding or pushing only increases disharmony and creates more problems. Decisions made out of desperation will always lead to more drama and chaos. Stopping our activity until we get centered, letting go and working on our inner peace will always lead to healthy, creative ideas and solutions. There is no way around the emotional work if you truly want to change your life. We can’ t change any problems in our life with the same level of consciousness we had when we created the problems. Most believe that if we are working hard our reward will be time to exercise, eat right and enjoy life. The truth is, the better we care for our emotional life (our inner life) the easier it is to make money, attract healthy relationships and enjoy life. Work is no longer a four-letter word. It becomes pleasure. Living life becomes a joy. Optimal living is simple. Love yourself and take good care of your inner well being first, then you will have the energy and wisdom to create your optimal life. Time expands and so will your life. This is hard to believe, I know, because we were taught things like“work hard and then play hard.”You have to have money to make money.”“They come from money, so it is easy for them.” These are all messages we can change. We can live in full responsibility. We can take control of our life by letting go and listening to our inner wisdom. Taking time to listen to that inner wisdom will lead you to your optimal life. It never fails.

Letter from Editor - Elizabeth Diebold Optimal Health Issue I recently took a moment to think about what I am doing, personally, to take care of my self and my health. Being a mom and having a career keeps me constantly on the go, and some days it is very challenging to get it all done. First, I thought about -- and celebrated -- the successes I have been having lately. We all need that little cheer to acknowledge what we are doing right! For me, that’ s daily walks, lemon water, eating more fruits/veggies, going to bed before or by 10pm, yoga, massage and journaling. Then I thought about where I was still struggling... mealtime and grocery shopping are big ones, along with fitting in downtime and relaxing. What did I do next? I looked at my schedule and developed a weekly plan of action that included time for breakfast, lunch and dinner, grocery shopping and meal planning/prep. I didn’t stop there, though. I looked at my whole calendar and devised a plan for everything that is important to me and scheduled it. I even scheduled time to plan my week and get organized on Sunday, as I know staying flexible is key. At first it seemed restricting to schedule all of this, but it is actually a very freeing process. I now see what is most important to me on my calendar and I feel more at peace as well. Mission accomplished! I’ m sharing this with all of you today because we can’t change time or how many hours we have in a day, but we can change how we view time and what we put on our daily calendars. I hope this leaves you inspired to make sure you are putting what is important to you first on your calendar as you strive to live a life of optimal health!

COLLAGEN PROTEIN Bulletproof Collagen Protein is the gold standard for protein powders. It is flavorless and blends in quickly without clumps, making it one of the easiest ways to add a protein boost to smoothies, soups and, of course, Bulletproof ® coffee. It also makes it easy to get the same vital amino acids found in bone broth without the time-consuming preparation. Bulletproof Collagen Protein has amino acids, including glycine, lysine and proline which are the building blocks your body uses to make muscles, bones, and joints. While collagen can help you build or maintain muscle and speed recovery if you’re working out, you don’t have to pump iron to benefit. In fact, most people enjoy collagen for its other benefits: supporting hair growth, reducing wrinkles and stretch marks and even upgrading your skin with a radiant, healthy ‘glow.’ Learn more and order online at www.bulletproof.com
As the first holistic nutrition solution, from at-home testing to food delivery, Habit is challenging the multibillion-dollar diet industry. They are also pioneering the personalized nutrition category. Based on the idea that each person requires different nutrients for their own optimal wellbeing, unlike other at-home tests that measure DNA alone, Habit looks at how the entire body works together, measuring more than 60 nutritionrelated blood and genetic biomarkers, biometrics and lifestyle choices to make personalized nutrition recommendations and help take guesswork out of healthy eating. Following test results, registered dieticians are available for wellness guidance and support, as well as food delivery customized to your nutritional needs. Kingen Chiropractic Wellness Center For over 20 years, Kingen Chiropractic Wellness Center has been a staple in the St. Louis Health Community. The focus of the office is to bring together all aspects of a person’s health to determine the best way to achieve results, restore function, and improve well being. Dr. Kingen and staff dig in and find the core element of a condition or problem by looking at the brain-body connection, metabolic and nutritional factors and structural imbalances. The doctors have extensive experience working with those patients who have: chronic pain, fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis, sports injuries, neuropathies, osteoporosis, thyroid conditions, and weight issues. However, the goal of care is to treat the person, not the diagnosis. If you’ve been to the doctor and have not received the answers you are looking for, Kingen Chiropractic Wellness Center can help! 2001 S. SPA & BEAUTY
Change the Course of Your Life with a DETOX By Jaime Rutherford
When you hear the word “DETOX” what initially comes to your mind? Drinking only lemon juice and cayenne for 3 days? Picking up a pack of juice from a local store and gulping down some green stuff? What if I told you there is a way to gently and intentionally detox? The benefits of a detox for the health of your body, mind and emotions can change the course of your life.
Here is what you need to know:
#1 Alkaline vs Acidic There are different pH levels throughout the body. The skin is at a certain pH, the stomach is at a certain pH. They all vary depending on the job of that particular organ. The stomach should be more acidic to break down proteins while the blood is more alkaline to support health and balance. What we are eating and drinking can either send our body to a more alkaline state (where it wants to be) or to a more acidic state where chronic disease can prevail, resulting in chronic inflammation. The number one way to alkalize the body is to add minerals like magnesium and antioxidants like vitamin E. In other words, eat whole foods. Avoid foods that are devoid in these nutrients like processed foods, foods high in sugar, foods coming from a box or through a window of your car.
#2 It creates lifestyle shifts A gentle 30-90 day detox from processed foods and processed life is an incredible way to create a lifestyle transformation. When you choose to avoid foods that trigger inflammation like gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, alcohol and caffeine, it allows the body to press pause on the stress that those foods are creating in the body. You can then enjoy how amazing you feel when you’re not eating them. It also allows you to then have choice around what foods you choose to reintroduce as part of your daily intake. Most people who do a 30-90 detox feel so great that they only occasionally eat breads, pastas, pizza, cookies, crackers, etc. These foods are no longer staples in the pantry. They become an occasional special treat.
#3 You get to rewrite your cells Cellular turnover varies for each organ. One of the coolest things about doing a gentle detox is that it allows your body’s cellular

turnover to happen without a bunch of junk floating around, and under chronic inflammation and old patterning. For example, your taste buds turn over about every 10 days to 2 weeks. Foods that you might have disliked before will have an opportunity to show up a bit differently. You may find you become more sensitive to sugars or salt. You may find that the donut no longer even looks good (yes, it’s possible). Your GI track turns over about every 3-5 days. You can rewrite the health of your gut. As you may know, 80% of our immune system sits in our gastrointestinal tract. Your immune cells live for around 90-120 days. If you stick to a detox program that you do over a 3-4 month time period, it can help start to recreate your immune system.
#4 The importance of sleep Many people who dive into a detox program will notice the first few days as not feeling awesome. That’s usually reflective of toxins being released from organs and affecting sleep, energy or your mood. Often people are addicted to sugar or caffeine and don’t realize it. There is often a withdrawal period. Pushing through the first few days will be the best thing you can do for yourself. When the body isn’t preoccupied with addictions, sugar cravings, and inflammation it can focus on healing and repairing while you are sleeping. Avoiding all the foods that are triggering inflammation and addiction is just as important as giving your body the time to sleep. The only thing that sleeps at night is your brain. Everything else is healing, repairing and regenerating like mad.

Embarrassed When You Cough, Laugh or Sneeze?
Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) happens when physical movement or activity— such as coughing, sneezing, running or heavy lifting — puts pressure (stress) on your bladder, causing the unintentional loss of urine. It isn't related to psychological stress and also differs from urge urinary incontinence (UUI), which is the unintentional loss of urine caused by the bladder muscle contracting, usually associated with a sense of urgency. Stress incontinence is much more common in women than men. If you have stress incontinence, you may feel embarrassed, isolate yourself, or limit your work and social life, especially exercise and leisure activities. Enter Geneveve™ by Viveve! Geneveve™ is a safe, non-surgical approach for revitalizing vaginal tissue. Just like skin, vaginal tissue can
become loose or ‘lax’ over time from childbirth, hormone deficiency or pelvic surgeries. Vaginal laxity leads to issues with sexual sensation, lubrication and urinary incontinence, which can impact a woman’s overall sense of wellbeing. Clinical studies have shown that during the Geneveve™ treatment, the natural formation of younger, more supportive collagen is activated, which gradually, over the subsequent three to six months, strengthens and revitalizes the area. The Centre for Vibrant Health and Wellness (www.drsalter.com) is the first in the St. Louis area to offer the new Geneveve™ treatment.
Collagen isn’t just for your face anymore! What is Geneveve™?
Does Geneveve Work?
Geneveve is a clinically-proven, single-session treatment that safely and comfortably revitalizes vaginal tissue.
Based on clinical research trials, Geneveve™ is the only treatment to use gentle, deep heating and surface cooling to stimulate the body’s natural collagen formation process. Because tissue is not damaged during the treatment, there is little to no downtime involved. Side effects that may occur include mild swelling or a tingling sensation after treatment, which should resolve quickly. Collagen formation will take place over the course of 1 to 3 months with continued improvement for 6 to 12 months. It is a gentle 30-minute treatment performed in our office.
™
Do I need the Geneveve™ treatment? Vaginal laxity is an extremely common issue for women that results from childbirth and/or aging. There are many symptoms associated with vaginal laxity, including: • Looseness of the vaginal wall or lack of tightness • Urinary incontinence • Lack of sensation and sexual desire •V aginal dryness and lack of lubrication during sexual activity

“You cannot poison a crucial enzyme, block an important receptor, or interfere with a metabolic function for the long term and expect a good result“ David Brownstein, M.D. Drugs that Don’t Work and Natural Therapies That Do We need to understand how medications work in our bodies and their effect on essential pathways. Many drugs work by inhibiting, modifying, or antagonizing a receptor or other chemical that at normal levels is essential for daily health. By changing a metabolic pathway, we risk altering nutrient depletion, absorption, synthesis, storage, and metabolism. Medications can alter the way we feel, the way we sleep, and the way our bodies handle nutrients. Drug-induced nutrient depletions are present in most of our popular drugs. Products such as “statin” drugs, estrogens, birth control, H2 blockers, PPIs, and antibiotics are notorious for causing low levels of various nutrients. At low levels symptoms sometime include low energy, numbness or tingling in extremities, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, and foggy memory. The onset of many of these symptoms can be six months to even a year after starting the medication, so many times it is not associated with the medication in question.

After optimizing diet when possible, I advise my patients to take various high quality protective supplements including; coenzyme Q -10, B-vitamins, folic acid, magnesium, vitamin D&K, and probiotics. I have often recommended to my patients, as a pharmacist, to exercise when they are at risk for heart disease. They would often complain of not having enough energy to exercise or they were already having a lot of muscle pain, so they couldn’t exercise very much. That’s when I started learning about how the same medications for heart disease can sometime prevent patients from staying healthy just because of the side effects. At Colonial Village Pharmacy, you will find everything you need to optimize your health. We provide personal care that the mass market pharmacies have long ago forgotten. Everyone wants to boost their immune system. A strong, robust immune system can equate to good health. Here are a few easy ways to boost the immune system.
Sleep
Prolonged time of less sleep can lead to profound changes in the body, one of the changes affecting the immune system. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation leads to more inflammatory markers in the body. Those who are sleep deprived are more likely to develop colds and flus. In fact, one study showed that those who slept for less than 7 hours per night were almost 3 times as likely to develop a cold than those who slept over 8 hours. That is a staggering comparison! Sleep deprivation also lessens the amount of circulating cytokines, the signaling cells of the immune system. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3256323/ www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2629403/

Stress
Stress is a huge player in any illness, but is very important in regulating the immune system as well. Have you ever gone through finals, staying up late and stressing, taking all of your exams and then get sick? In times of stress (emotional stress, chemical stress from toxins and foods, and physical stress) our bodies will secrete cortisol as a protective mechanism. When cortisol is elevated for long periods it can lead to prolonged inflammation, causing a decreased immune response. This perfect storm can lead to many immune problems and disease processes. http://dujs.dartmouth.edu/2011/02/the-physiology-of-stress-cortisol-and-thehypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-axis/#.WSdlvRPyvVo
Sugar
Reaching for that candy bar? That ice cream? Cookies? You may be deflating your immune system! After eating high-sugar foods, your immune system is damaged for a period of time, some believe for days. In fact, one study showed that after eating sugar, the white blood cells of the immune system were 40% less effective at killing germs! When constantly exposed to sugar, the immune system becomes chronically deficient, leading to more sickness. Seth Gerlach, DC, DABCI is a functional medicine practitioner and wellness mentor. Living Your Best Life:
Self-care as a Path to Optimal Health By Vicki Braun
Wellness has been a buzzword in the healthcare world for some time now. Rates of chronic disease and associated treatment costs continue to rise, and caregivers and consumers are once more embracing the old adage that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." But what does optimal health look like, and how do we choose the correct path to find and maintain that state? Part of the answer certainly lies in what we refer to as self-care and there are easy steps one can take to incorporate strategies into an overall plan to support true wellness.
As a yoga teacher and Reiki practitioner, many of my students and clients find their way to yoga classes or my Reiki practice due to stressful life events, illness and/or injury. Their doctors recommend yoga or complementary therapies in addition to traditional medicine, recognizing that the ability to respond to and recover from illness and injury is directly impacted by stress. With recent studies showing current U.S. stress levels at their highest in a decade1, it's more crucial than ever to recognize and manage stress. While most will agree that adequate restful sleep, a healthy diet, exercise, and fresh air are vital to maintain health,

many still view time spent on the massage or Reiki table as an indulgence. In reality they are important modalities to help support a healthy immune system by moving energy, fluid and waste byproducts more efficiently through the body, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and decreasing stress hormone levels that impact efficiency and function of all body systems. Apart from a good night’s sleep, we have an additional opportunity to reset the body into rest-and-repair mode during the beautiful meditative state that is often achieved on the Reiki or massage table–combining the restorative power of a good nap with an energetic and physical body tuneup! Moreover, hands-on therapies provide a healing

human connection that many people are missing in their lives. Never underestimate the healing power of touch, especially in a world where we have seemingly become more and more disconnected from each other and from self. A dedicated yoga practice is also an excellent way to boost the immune system, serving the purpose of an exercise regimen that strengthens the mind-body connection, providing an outlet to release existing stress and build resilience. Yoga’s gentle inversions and twists combined with deep breathing can help to stimulate parasympathetic nervous response, moving lymph fluid and oxygenated blood throughout the body and lowering blood pressure. Best of all, these postures can be modified to allow for just about anyone to practice them safely and comfortably.

LOCAL YOGINIS by Tina Farmer
Women of all ages find yoga a perfect exercise that enhances their fitness while providing emotional balance and mental clarity. Many even incorporate the principles they learned through practice at work and in their day-to-day lives. While some discover yoga as a means of relieving chronic pain, others find it a powerful source of energy, strength and flexibility, as attested to by this month’s featured Local Yoginis.
Studio: Practicing Yoga Studio Brianna Owens (TOP)
Brianna was introduced to yoga in 2009 while training for her first half marathon. Since then, she has found yoga’s benefits to be boundless and she’s currently at Practicing Yoga Studio. Brianna firmly believes yoga has helped her unlock, breathe into and accept her best, most authentic self. By connecting to herself through practice, she is better able to connect to others in authentic, loving, compassionate ways. Brianna teaches yoga (Practicing Yoga and Kula Yoga) and theater for Shakespeare Festival St. Louis. When she’s not on her mat, you can find her reading, cooking, knitting or enjoying live music with her husband.
Caroline offers a dynamic yoga practice that stems both physically and philosophically from Patanjali’s eightfold path. She appreciates the beauty of a skillfully crafted vinyasa class and sees all of her students as powerful beings.
Studio: Sweet Peace Yoga Emily Ehrhart (BOTTOM)
Studio: GO YOGA! express
By the time Emily was 21 years old she had chronic and sometimes debilitating back pain due to scoliosis. Somebody suggested she try yoga to help relieve the pain and she noticed a change almost immediately after starting a regular practice. As Emily began to strengthen her core and build flexibility, her pain significantly diminished. Over time, she noticed many other benefits and turned to yoga not just for physical fitness, but also for emotional balance and stress relief.
Caroline’s first memories of yoga are of her dad doing headstands in her childhood home. She found herself personally drawn to yoga practice after she stopped playing lacrosse in college and has been practicing ever since. She completed her first 200-hour teacher training through CorePower Yoga in 2011, followed by a 200-hour training with Divine Play Yoga and numerous advanced trainings thereafter.
More than two years ago Emily became a yoga teacher, teaching and practicing at Sweet Peace Yoga in Kirkwood, and she considers the yogis and yoginis at the studio family. She also works as a psychotherapist and often brings asana and pranayama into her clients’ treatment plans. It always brings her great joy to see how yoga can be an effective coping skill in sustaining healthy thoughts and emotions.

MEN MAT on the
by Tina Farmer
More and more, fitness minded men are turning to yoga as a way to increase their strength and flexibility while balancing their mental state. With its focus on building strength while ensuring correct posture and body alignment, yoga has become an important part of a well-rounded workout routine, as confirmed by this month’s Men on the Mat.
Studio: Metro Power Yoga David Stockton (TOP) Like many of us, David was looking for physical fitness when he discovered hot power yoga. He quickly learned yoga was more than pretzel poses and ommms; it was an incredible physical challenge. His body grew stronger and leaner, and he ‘magically’ felt more balanced and well grounded. When he’s tired yoga gives him energy, stressed it calms him, regretful it gives him acceptance. In 2016, he explored the ‘magic’ by completing a 200hour yoga teacher training at Metro Power Yoga in Kirkwood, MO. David travels extensively and takes his practice with him… in airports, hotel rooms and new studios around the world.
Studio: GO YOGA! Express Ascenzo Bonitati: (MIDDLE) Ascenzo’s yoga journey began less than a year ago when his wife convinced him to join her for a Hot Yoga class. Having practiced Martial Arts for 25 years and being an avid crossfitter and fitness junkie, he saw yoga as a great chance to do
something new and get a workout in. He never imagined how intense of a workout yoga could be while also doing wonders for his mental sanity. As a military officer for 12 years, Ascenzo also realizes yoga is a good stress relief from operational demands. Hot Yoga is hands down his favorite form of yoga and Kelly is his favorite teacher at Go Yoga Express.
Studio: Shanti Glenn MacDonald (BOTTOM) Glenn found yoga after years of distance running (many injuries), fencing (body asymmetry) and sitting at a computer (back/neck issues). His wife and daughter had practiced yoga for years, so he decided to try it. Being physically inflexible and mentally overactive, he hated it. But Glenn soon felt more flexible and vastly stronger, with improved balance. His mind became calmer and sharper; and he found that embracing equanimity and compassion was transformative. He has several great teachers, but practices most often with Dianna Lucas, Katie Kelly (Shanti) and Kelly Hogan. Off the mat, Glenn is a Wash U economist and composer/producer of electronic music.

Refractive surgeons have experienced a learning curve when it comes to refractive procedures, including laser eye surgery, but our knowledge and technology have come a long way. Today, not only is LASIK more advanced and effective, but there are now LASIK alternatives that can offer permanent solutions to patients who have been told that LASIK won’t work for them. That means that, for those billions of eyes in the world, there is a wider array of possible laser eye surgery or refractive solutions to choose from. The key for me has been acquiring the experience, educationand technology to make those options available to my patients.
That’s why Brinton Vision offers all seven modern procedures including sub-Bowman keratomileusis (often called SBK or Advanced LASIK), Visian ICL, SMILE, KAMRA inlay, Raindrop inlay, refractive lens exchange (RLE) and ASA (also called Advanced PRK). I am proud to say that Brinton Vision is the only practice in the state to specialize solely in refractive procedures. What’s more, we have the technology and expertise to solve many unique vision problems, even for people who have been told they are not candidates for LASIK.
Patients often tell me that we are different, and I think that’s true. From the personalized attention our staff members provide, to the investment we’ve made in diagnostic technology to ensure you are a good candidate, to the amount of time I dedicate toward each patient, we care and it shows. There is never pressure and never a sales pitch; we simply provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision about one of the most important aspects of your life – your vision.
Nothing has given me more satisfaction than seeing patients smile when they realize they can do everything from jumping into a swimming pool to texting their grandchildren, all with clear, crisp vision. It’s about more than just getting rid of glasses; it’s about helping patients live the lives they want to live. It’s about visual freedom, which is an incredible thing. Brinton Vision is located at 555 N. New Ballas Rd. in Creve Coeur. For more information on how you can obtain visual freedom, please visit brintonvision.com or call 314.375.2020.
A Simple Step to Optimal Health By Stacy Sullivan
Drink lots of water, get more sleep, exercise, relax, meditate, eat better. These all seem so easy on the journey to Optimal Health, but are they really? Does the thought of changing your entire lifestyle seem overwhelming? The path to wellness can seem complicated and many are seeking motivating tools and experiences to deliver optimal benefits with minimal effort. Sweating in the sauna is a simple step to seek clarity and align the mind, body and spirit for favorable results. A 40-minute private session in an infrared sauna allows one to take time for self, relax and detox all while enjoying a meditative, passive workout that leads to lowering cortisol levels and gaining better sleep. The euphoric sense of wellbeing can stimulate the desire for healthier living and put you on the path to making different choices. Infrared saunas are designed to promote a safe, natural and detoxifying sweat. Infrared light therapy provides many of the health benefits of natural sunlight without any of the dangerous effects of UV Rays. Just like the sun, infrared sauna waves penetrate up to 1 ½ below your skin to detoxify and revitalize your cells. The result is a deep and highly efficient sweat that eliminates toxins at the cellular level, leaving you feeling lighter, with increased health and vitality. Unlike a traditional sauna, the infrared sauna heats you gently from the inside out instead of heating the air around you. Envision yourself feeling relaxed and energized in the car on a sunny day with the warmth tingling your skin. This will give you an idea of how the radiant heat feels.
Take the simple step and go sweat today. Sessions start as low as $20. Sol Sweat is located at 10727 Big Bend Road, Kirkwood, MO 63011. Yoga has the power to transform body, mind and spirit; just ask Kellie Mathes, owner and founder of Go Yoga! Express and co-facilitator of her studio’s upcoming 200-hour yoga teacher training program. Mathes turned to yoga to regain strength and balance she lost during her successful battle with breast cancer. “Yoga was the only thing I could keep up with. After just a few months of practice, I was stronger than before,” Mathes proclaimed. And, so, the journey began. Mathes was drawn to the discipline of Bikram Yoga and practiced consistently for several years. She was then drawn to the work of Baron Baptiste, whose style, Mathes said, “Added an element of play to my practice.” Mathes completed Baptiste’s Level One, “Journey Into Power” and Level Two, “The Sannyasin’s Journey” training, and earned her Tier One Certification. She also completed Level Three “Beyond Borders” and participated in the apprentice program during which she assisted Baptiste and his team in a Level One Training in Sedona, AZ. Mathes will soon achieve status as a Tier Two instructor. As Mathes’s personal yoga practice evolved, she recognized the power of yoga and wanted to share it with others. She began teaching private classes, and, after about two years, she and a pair of friends decided to open a studio. As her practice and teaching continued to evolve, transforming her both physically and spiritually, Mathes was eager to spread her passion to a wider audience. She was inspired to open a studio as sole proprietor and Go Yoga! Express was born.

Step Up Your Immune Game By Nicole Portell
It’s summer, which means many of us have planned vacations or day trips with our families and friends. One sure way to put a damper on BBQs and time at the beach is a round of illness. We all know that eating right, exercising and good sleep habits all play their parts in how good we feel. But did you know healthy behaviors also boost your immunity?
Eating Right
An integrated approach to healing and wellness. • Diet & Nutrition • Detoxification • Massage • Acupuncture • Chiropractic • Meditation • Trasformational Breathwork • Energy Therapy • Gifts (Health, Spiritual, Eco, Fun)
Experience The BioMat at The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit
If you’re ready to give your immune system a boost, start with the produce aisle at your favorite grocery store. Choose citrus fruits, red bell peppers and spinach for Vitamin C, and boost your fiber and antioxidant intake with broccoli. Reach for garlic and ginger to help with inflammation, and then head to the dairy section to stock up on probiotic-rich yogurt. Need a snack? Sip on green tea for its antioxidant-rich flavonoids and nosh on almonds for fat-soluble Vitamin E.
Exercising Regular, moderate physical activity can help relieve stress, improve sleep and does wonders for your cardiovascular system. Recent studies, however, suggest exercise can also aid with the prevention of infections and disease. During exercise, the immune system kicks into gear and produces cells that can attack bacteria. In addition, the cells that can enhance immunity are circulated through the body at a quicker rate. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, and don’t forget to add strength training at least twice a week to help with muscle building and bone density.
Sleep There are many reasons health professionals endorse a good night’s sleep – increased mental clarity, lowered stress levels, decreased risk of heart disease, weight loss or maintenance. Another reason to add good sleep habits to your overall wellness strategy? Strengthened immunity. During sleep, our bodies release disease-fighting materials that are important for warding off illnesses and disease. We also do a lot of repair and restoration during our slumbers, so make sure to get at least 7-9 hours per night. Energy-Boosting Foods By Monica Koch
Don’t we all want more energy? More energy to work out, play with the kids, get more done at work, have more fun, the list goes on and on. We reach for another cup of coffee or sugarloaded snack to give us that burst of energy, but the crash makes us feel worse! These are short-term solutions. Naturally energyboosting foods can give you the long-lasting energy you need to take back your day. Try making these small changes and you’ll see big boosts of energy. Start your day with a hard-boiled egg – it’ll keep you full and energized all morning long. They make a great on-the-go breakfast! Make a big batch at once and then grab and go all week. Easy and delish – done! Mint and lemon are natural energy boosters, so add them to your water and drink up! Dehydration can leave you with low energy, so it’s a win-win. Green your lunch routine. Spinach and kale are two great greens for boosting your energy. Add your favorite veggies and protein to a mix of spinach and kale for a lunch that packs a punch. The spinach and kale will keep you energized and the veggies and protein will keep you full! Bonus points if you can add beets, they’re super energizing! Salmon is a superfood for a reason. It is naturally energizing, has tons of good nutrients for our hair and skin and is full of good fats. Roast your favorite veggies in a pan with salmon for a delicious and nutritious dinner. Enjoy the leftovers in a salad!

7 Hormones Are Preventing You From Losing Weight By Erica Hunt
For women, especially over 35 years old, weight loss and maintenance is often an ongoing battle. It can be confusing determining what is best with all the options out there for weight loss. The reality is that all of them (low carb, low fat, no sugar, portion control, exercise) will enable you to lose weight. What most women struggle with is keeping that weight off. Let’s face it, yo-yo dieting can be frustrating, costly on your closet and just downright exhausting. At Complete Fitness, we offer a program that not only focuses on healthy eating choices, but also on another key component: balanced hormones. We educate our members during our 20 pounds/30 days Fast Track Program about the hormones that hold them back, and guide them through the process of resetting that delicate balance so their bodies become efficient at losing body fat. Once we reach the ideal hormonal balance, we begin to customize each member’s personal eating plan through the Listen to Your Body program. Imagine what it could be like to know exactly what foods help your body to lose weight and keep it off! The benefits don’t stop at weight loss. Our members report that the health benefits they notice far outweigh the results on the scale. Many experience lower blood pressure, more restful sleep, lower cholesterol, joint pain alleviated, hot flashes and night sweats gone, acid reflux gone and increased energy to do the things they love. Our goal is not just weight loss; we strive to teach our members a lifestyle that will keep them happy, healthy and fully alive. To begin living your best life contact Erica Hunt, Licensed Weight Loss and Life Coach, at 618-655-1515 or visit www.ericahuntwellness.com for more information about our upcoming FREE Seminars.

Yoga Teacher Training at Prana Yoga Prana Yoga immersion into yoga is Yoga Alliance sanctioned and facilitated by Emmet Schmelig E-RYT-500, LMT, YACEP, AFAA sense 2011. Upon completion, students will have all requirements to apply for YA Teacher Certification at the 200 hour level if they desire to teach yoga. We consider our teacher training an immersion into yoga, not simply a certifying school. We believe the history, evolution and philosophy of yoga is beneficial as well as the physical aspects of asana practice. Our goal is to do more than simply teach the physical practice of yoga. A modern exercise yoga class could be recorded and played for students. Our mission is to infuse the true essence of yoga philosophy and this cannot be force fed. Yoga philosophy is not easily understood by the Western mind, therefore it takes time and study to be able to comprehend the true teachings offered in yoga. Yoga teaches how to live a life of comfort, health and wealth. Yoga teaches prosperity not austerity. Yoga teachings recognize and fully accepts all personal beliefs and religion. The teaching of yoga is only to enhance the quality of life and not to change ones personal belief. Yoga is science and art both in philosophy and physical practice. Taking our approach into consideration, we firmly believe the teaching of yoga cannot be compressed into a few weeks or months. Our program is one weekend per

month for 10 months, giving students time to integrate and incorporate the 18 hours of a weekend session. The Fall 2017 Class begins September 8th. As for the physical practice of yoga, we believe yoga asana addresses five critical areas for great physical health evenas we age. The five areas are:
➊ Strength, as we age we lose muscle tone. ➋ Flexibility, also can be maintained throughout life. ➌ Balance. ➍ Proprioception, simply knowing where your body is in space.
➎ Mental focus, mindfulness. We do an in-depth study of anatomy and physiology related to yoga practice.

Osteogenic Loading Increase Your Body Strength with One, 10-Minute-Per-Week Effort
Improving vitality and strength after age 30 can be difficult. At best, we hope to slow the muscu loskeletal atrophy that comes with aging through rigorous exercise and a healthy diet. What if science discovered a way to actually reverse bone loss, increase strength and im prove balance and agility well after age 30? What if this tech nology could benefit all ages and was possible in just 7 to 10 minutes of sweat-free effort per week? Would you want to know about it? This is not just a scientific theory, or some interesting piece of research. It is actually available for practice today. In fact, it has caught the attention of world-famous speaker and philanthropist Tony Robbins. He has personally used this system and he says at the age of 57 he is in the best shape of his life after adopting it. For over a century it has been believed that simple weight-bearing exercise would increase bone strength, and could help prevent osteoporosis. Recent research, however, shows that standard exercise for strengthening muscles and bones is not nearly as effective as has been traditionally believed. A peer-re viewed study in 2012 determined that to increase bone density faster than one is losing

Make Sure You Can Digest Your “Superfoods”! You have recently changed your diet. You are eating lots of nutritious veggies, fruits, lean proteins and healthy fats! You are making all the right choices…. everything will fall into place, right? What your body is doing with those foods will answer that question! The stomach has important responsibilities in maintaining overall body health. Among the stomach’s responsibilities, regulating the flow of hydrochloric acid is one of its most important duties. Hydrochloric acid (HCL) helps break down and dissolve food by activating enzymes. Enzymes must break down food so that it can be digested and passed into the bloodstream. Through the blood, the body absorbs nutrients and maintains normal function. Without suitable amounts of HCL in the stomach, the body faces serious health issues. When food sits in the stomach and is not broken down by enzymes, it continues to sit there, eventually rotting and putrefying. The putrefied food begins to produce harmful, acidic gases that travel up the esophagus and cause burning sensations to the throat. This is commonly referred to as acid reflux. Additionally, putrefied food destroys the lining of the stomach, due to its acidity, and can lead to stomach ulcers. Anyone with a pre-existing chronic health condition will suffer from worsened symptoms if the stomach behaves erratically. Whether or not the stomach is the source of a chronic health condition, it still needs to be evaluated to ensure it’s working properly. The lack of HCL in the stomach can be caused by a variety of triggers. The most common occurrences are brought on by bacteria, poor diet and the existence of an autoimmune condition. Diet needs to be changed by eating healthy, non-inflammatory foods and bacteria can be eradicated through a series of different procedures. If autoimmune disease is triggering stomach dysfunction, the treatment process becomes more difficult. The other organs of the body must be evaluated as part of the entire bodily system. Chronic health conditions are brought on by the domino effect – one organ triggers one problem, which causes another organ to trigger another problem and in turn worsens the autoimmune condition. Heightened autoimmunity can then lead to stomach dysfunction. Traditional medical approaches towards a lack of HCL in the stomach treat only the symptoms felt by patients. Doctors frequently prescribe drugs (Nexium, Prilosec) to help decrease acid reflux caused by putrefied food. This method treats acid reflux symptoms yet neglects the problem at hand, which is a lack of HCL in the stomach. In this scenario, food will still rot in the stomach and cause further damage. Alternative medical approaches seek to restore the production and release of HCL in the stomach to ensure it works properly. Proper diet, eradicating harmful bacteria, or introducing supplements that help produce HCL are all methods to promote a healthy stomach. The alternative method is centered on restoring normal body function by correcting the problem at its source, not simply treating symptoms. Last year, my sister gave me a gift certificate to float. I wasn’t familiar with float therapy then and thought: “Float? Like down the river?” If you’re like me back then, here’s how floating works: For an hour, you relax in a private pool where 1,000 pounds of magnesium-rich, Epsom salts-infused water keeps you afloat. This along with reduced sensory input (no lights, no sounds, no gravity, skin-temperature water) allows you to redirect physical and mental energy inward. Floating is a phenomenal way to unweight yourself on many levels. Fans of floating include athletes, pregnant women, those with anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, pain, PTSD, sleep troubles or stress. As a psychiatrist, I deeply value traditional medicine. As a seeker of wellness, and a mother who has experienced adversity of my own, I’m also a firm believer in natural modalities that can complement medicine. Once I discovered float therapy’s effectiveness, I wanted to share it with as many people as possible. It also opened my eyes to other natural therapies, and that’s why I’m proud to bring them to the St. Louis community through Radiance Float + Wellness, along with my father, a fellow psychiatrist.

Is there such a thing as
“formulated natural food”? Ever since the “ready-to-feed” baby formulas were commercialized in the 1960s, we have seen numerous powders and shakes being marketed as nutritional supplements. In recent years, there have been more and more such products entering the natural food market, which were branded as “organic, healthy, and natural.” However, once you take a closer look at their back labels and read their ingredients, the “natural and healthy” claims start to look much less convincing. These “formulated” products are based on predetermined nutritional compositions. In order to meet these nutritional targets, various food extracts (purified protein, fat, and carbohydrate), synthetic chemicals (vitamins and minerals), as well as other additives (sugar, artificial flavors, preservatives and "thickeners") were then mixed to create powders and shakes with certain flavors and consistency.
There are many concerns about these products. First of all, despite of decades of research, there has not been any consensus on what should be the perfect nutritional composition. Therefore, to arbitrarily set a nutrition allocation target is not
only is misguided but also could lead to nutritional imbalance. In the end, the human body is complicated and unique to each individual. One size never fits all. Consumers should also understand that, when it comes to nature, the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts. It has long been proven that grains, beans, seeds and nuts are far more nutritious and beneficial when people eat them as a whole rather than eating their refined or heavily processed counterparts. The reason is simple: the entire composition of each grain, soybean or almond contain many essential elements including protein, fiber, complex carb, vitamins and minerals. When you process them into different individual parts, you not only lose many of their nutrients, but also inevitably introduce many unwanted chemicals into those extracts. The question then becomes, if the natural forms of those foods are so healthy, why do we need to pick them apart and then try to put them back together? And yet, the biggest problem with these formulated powders and shakes is that they often create large amounts of food waste. When you extract only one
ingredient, such as protein, from natural foods, you not only waste other parts of the foods, but also waste the natural resources used to grow them. Do you know that one single almond needs 1.1 gallon of water to grow? You can imagine how much water alone is wasted to produce almond milk. Moreover, in order to create an acceptable taste, a significant amount of purified sugar is often added to these formulated products, and we all know what the harm of added sugar is to our health. As the makers of Karuna’s natural beverages, we base our nutritional shakes on whole food ingredients without using any protein extracts. By making full use of the healthy grains, beans, seeds and nuts, we take pride in pioneering a new way of natural food making that is environmentally sustainable and socially responsible.
Our products can be found at these locations: Whole Foods Market, Dierbergs Market, Straub’s, United Provisions, Global Foods Market, Union Station Hotel, Fresh Thyme and select yoga, pilates and fitness centers.

For 20 years, I've had the privilege of counseling hundreds of clients to build better foundations of mental health. For many clients, optimizing the mind is only partially helpful to their well being. A stable mind is no substitute for a healthy body or a vibrant soul, and any therapy or treatment can only go so far in promoting health. In my estimation, and in keeping with recent research1, the wellspring of wellbeing requires an integrated approach, one where several modalities to health can be artfully woven together. However, clients will often complain that their pursuit of wellness is piecemeal at best, whether due to lack of resource awareness, scarcity of time/money or an inability to travel to widely scattered services. So, how do we overcome these hurdles? Diversified Health & Wellness Center’s goal was to bring as many modalities as possible under one roof. We have created a set of services that capture the core dimensions of a whole person. Services that address the vital aspects of body, mind, and spirit. Having all the ingredients in one place does not mean that the recipe is going to come together! To truly integrate, you must have a working idea (and preferably several ideas) of what constitutes a fulfilled, healthy, happy human being. That requires a whole village of bright minds and full hearts. We have created a network of professionals dedicated to a holistic, client-centered approach, who can take account of the multifaceted needs of each person and help guide them on their way to wellbeing. With the help of our providers, clients can move from strength to strength, building on their successes and growing in multiple ways simultaneously. Wellness is an art as much as it is a science. We recognize that there is no single magic formula to health and wellness. We actively encourage exploration of the diverse offerings at the center for our clients to find new and more fruitful integrations of wellbeing. Investment Planning: The Basics Why do so many people never reach the financial independence that they desire? Often it's because they just don't take that first step -getting started. Besides procrastination, other excuses people make are that investing is too risky, too complicated, too time consuming or only for the rich. However, there's nothing complicated about common investing techniques, and it usually doesn't take much time to understand the basics. One of the biggest risks you face is not educating yourself about investments that may be able to help you pursue your financial goals and how to approach the investing process.
Saving versus investing Both saving and investing have a place in your finances. But don't confuse the two. Saving is the process of setting aside money to be used for a financial goal. Investing is what you do with those savings.
Why invest? You invest for the future, and the future is expensive. Although all investing involves the possibility of loss, including the loss of principal, and there’s no guarantee that any investment strategy will be successful, investing is one way to try to prepare for that future. You have to take responsibility for your own finances, even if you need expert help to do so. Social Security may play a less significant role for you than it did for previous generations. Employers are switching from guaranteed pensions to plans that require you to make contributions and choose investments. The better you manage your dollars, the more likely it is that you'll have the means to make the future what you want it to be.
What is the best way to invest? • Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Though asset allocation and diversification don't guarantee a profit or ensure against the possibility of loss, having multiple types of investments may reduce the impact of a loss on any single investment. • Invest so that your money at least keeps pace with inflation over time. • Focus on long-term potential rather than short-term price fluctuations. • Ask questions and become educated before investing. • Invest with your head. Avoid the urge to invest based on how you feel.
Consider whether you need expert help If you have the time and energy to educate yourself about investing, you may not feel you need assistance. However, for many people--especially those with substantial assets and multiple investment accounts-It may be worth getting expert help to create a financial plan that integrates long-term financial goals such as retirement with other, more shortterm needs. C. Michael Unterreiner, ChFC, founded Financial Legacy Associates to create an environment where financial professionals could serve their clients better by sharing their experiences and ideas. As a Shaman, when confronted with uncomfortable emotions or feelings, we always go inside and ask ourselves, “what is it about this situation that is triggering me?” And then, we work from the inside out to get some sort of resolution. Lately, there has been so much energy shifting and changing in our world and within our own environment, it is everywhere! I use Shamanic practices to move out the feelings and get answers on what I need to do next. I will now take you through this process so you too can release old energy and bring in “light”. First, take a look at what the emotion is underneath this discomfort, the story is not as important as identifying the emotion. Allow yourself to feel it inside and locate “where” it is in your body. Breathe into it, just by taking deep breaths and noticing where the energy intensifies in your body. You will quickly realize you do not want to keep that emotion inside. Do not attach to any story about the emotion as there are probably many stories buried inside that are connected to that emotion. You will release all the old stories that are connected, without having to identify all of them. Continue breathing deeply, asking the emotion to leave and move into the earth, where it can be transmuted by Mother Earth energies into something beautiful. At the same time, visualize Divine light coming into the top of your head and lighting up every single cell in your body. Keep breathing in the light over and over again, and releasing the emotions that do not feel “light” in your body. Eventually, you will feel relieved and even grateful that you were able to release this emotion so deeply. Now, ask yourself if there is anything else you feel inspired to do, that would help you feel better about the situation. You may then immediately feel the need to volunteer, write a letter, make a donation or simply shine your light on the situation. This is a part of what is meant in Shamanism as “walking in beauty”, it is shining a light on anything that does not resonate with you, letting it go, and finding the beauty in all situations. It is about seeing the beauty in everything, even if it challenging and you can only find a sparkle, or a huge bright light may appear. It is about shining your light, and being the beauty through your light that can assist others to find theirs! Marilyn Eagen of Holistic Harmony Lifecare and owner of The Peace Place. Eating Your Way to Better Health

We talk about this in our Kitchen all the time.
How can we create, or re-create, our recipes to eliminate artificial or highly-processed ingredients? While we aren’t 100% “clean” or “raw,” we do make every effort to use fresh, simple ingredients in our catering dishes as well as our Pantry items and limit the amount of artificial anything that goes into our food. As a result, the food tastes better and we feel better. When you’re cooking in your kitchen, think about how you can customize the recipe to make it healthier. There’s no reason to blindly follow a recipe. By using a little creativity, creating a healthier version of an old standby is an easy thing to do. Perhaps you exchange plain Greek yogurt for sour cream. Does a sauce call for a lot of butter? Use half extra-virgin olive oil and half butter. Eliminate or reduce the salt called for in each recipe and add herbs and spices to lend flavor and your own signature to dish. Does a recipe call for a canned soup? Make your own cream of mushroom soup! It’s easy and healthier.

A Healthy Lifestyle = A Happier You. The human body contains 60,000 miles of arteries, capillaries and veins. Our hearts beat 42,048,000 times each year. To keep all of this going, we breathe 23,000 times a day. To maintain this wonderful machine, we are bombarded with a plethora of information telling us with efficacious certainty how we can stay healthy with this and that easy fix. We are learning through countless and painful failures that much of what is marketed is inaccurate and not truly based on scientific facts. For fun let us examine some of the well established falsehoods: • First of all, we are better off to understand physiological facts rather than a money making product. • Easy and effortless solutions are ineffective. • Counting calories has been and will always be a catastrophic failure. • Fat free foods are not healthy. • All sodas, especially diet sodas, are dangerously harmful if over used. • E cigarettes poison us in a more technologically sophisticated fashion. Regular cigarettes kill us with old fashion certainty. New classes and groups are forming at the peace place to support our energy community. • Marketed diet food packages, although usually not harmful, offer nothing you cannot get at your local quality grocery. As long as you can count and measure, your local store will do. • Health without exercise and physical activity is a fantasy. On the other end of the spectrum there are scientific realities repetitively tested and proven that work, a few follow:

• The more a food is processed the more it becomes unhealthy, eat fresh. • Something that is truly organic is a healthy venue. • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. • Exercise is the savior of our cardiovascular system, often reversing the hardening of veins and arteries. • Eat well, exercise sensibly and be happy. Countless data-based research shows the positive relationship between our body’s health and our mental wellbeing. • We never want to hurt ourselves, but conversely if it is totally comfortable it is not doing much. A little non-harmful discomfort during exercise is expected and productive. In the end a healthy physically fit lifestyle will make us happier, slow or reverse the aging process, improve our immune system and provide for a more meaningful existence. Health does not come packaged for us. It comes from internal motivation, science and common sense. Go for a walk or run, take Yoga, go to the gym, pass up the fast food, live longer and enjoy the sojourn. TRAVEL
Honeymoon in the Wild By Stacy Oliver Neal
The unexpected text came from a man who had been pursuing me: “I know this is very last minute, but would you like to go to the Banff Mountain Film Festival tonight?” My interest was piqued by the surprising invitation. The film festival is a series of extreme outdoor sports and recreation shorts, and I had no idea he was into that. “Yes!” I responded. Four years and many adventures later, we recently got married and spent our honeymoon in and around Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. This trip was a dream-come-true bucket list item for my husband, but I wondered how impressive the Canadian Rockies would really be. After all, I previously lived in Aspen, Colorado. How much more incredible does it get? I can tell you now -- there is something special in Banff and at Lake Louise.

Canadian Rockies that’s designed to lift your spirit and soul. Whether you visit to practice the art of increasing self-awareness, yoga, meditation, playful creativity or Zen writing, a retreat in Lake Louise will leave you with a lifetime of inspired insights and the tools to bring those teachings alive, no matter where life takes you.
Glacier Adventure We followed the suggestion of our concierge manager and spent a full day along the Icefields Parkway, starting with a bear sighting. Just riding in the specially designed ice explorer vehicle was worth the trip, and the glacial waters are stunning and clear. According to our glaciologist and guide, the glacier we walked on will be melted away in 150 years; a sobering thought that helped us truly appreciate the experience. On the return trip we saw a second bear, a grizzly! Seeing him from the safety of our vehicle ticked off an item from my bucket list.
Romance - Baker Creek Bistro Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Our first stop was at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, where we had reserved a luxurious Gold Level suite overlooking the lake. The stunningly beautiful hotel is close to everything the park has to offer and a worthy destination of its own. The service is incredible, the facilities excellent and the activities as endless as the choice of food in the Chateau’s many onsite restaurants. Comfort or healthy? Both are available, and I was overjoyed to find a raw organic juice bar on the premises. This year, the Fairmont added an exciting new feature -- a transformative travel program in the heart of the
A true gem of the woods, this authentic Canadian mountain cabin is nestled among huge evergreens and serves gourmet wild cuisine. Seated in front of the fireplace in this quaint setting among the majestic mountains, we were in heaven. The smell of wood burning in the fireplace, the awe-inspiring views, the incredible food – what more could a honeymooner want?
Fairmont Banff Springs A throwback to the traditions of old Europe, the 129-year old hotel offers an exceptional experience in a naturally stunning location. From the colorful uniforms of the attentive staff to thoughtfully updated facilities and legendary hospitality, guests are pampered like royalty and made to feel special from the moment they arrive.
The perfect blend of modern amenities and old-world charm, one stay confirms why this highly rated hotel is often referred to as the Castle in the Rockies.
Sulphur Mountain Having lived in Aspen I thought I was accustomed to “Difficult” hikes; still Sulphur Mountain in downtown Banff was a challenge. The three-hour estimated hike is straight up and the altitude was working on me, but we made it to the summit in two-and-a-half hours. Yes, I am bragging. Reaching the top was a relief with the pleasant surprise of multiple restaurant choices, a Starbucks, stunning panoramic views and, thank goodness, a gondola ride to the bottom. Though the view was worth every step of the hike, I was left a bit sore and ready for a trip to the spa.
Willow Stream Spa This spa, in the historic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, offers full-service luxury relaxation featuring mineral pools of varying temperatures as well as eucalyptus steam rooms, hot tubs, a dry sauna and multiple lounges. My aches from our trek up Sulphur Mountain were instantly soothed by the “Couple’s Mountain Memory Massage.” Among the most thorough massage packages I’ve ever experienced, the treatment includes a full body brush, an aromatherapy soak with a rare essential oil made from a German flower and an hour massage. Our Honeymoon in the Wild was filled with exciting experiences that left us with a renewed feeling of gratitude and awe for this amazing planet we live on, as well as an appreciation for the preservation of these incredible spaces. Though our bucket list is filled with other places we’d like to see, we’re already looking forward to our next visit to this natural wonder.
Namaste, Canada.

Y&S INTERVIEW Dr. L In medical school, I realized the disconnect in treating the symptoms rather than the root causes of disease. My vision was to create a convenient healthy lifestyle and holistic medical system in one location, empowering members to reach their highest potential and to turn to pills and procedures as a last resort. I also traveled through Greece’s healing temples, which are structured around a philosophy of wellbeing -- treating people mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually, which we implement at PALM Health. I created the Anthropedia Foundation, a non-profit that educates people about sustainable health and well-being, while in medical school. The foundation focuses on the professional development & training of counselors, social workers, educators, and other allied health care professionals, as well as working with organizations, such as the St. Patrick Center, to implement programs that empower at risk populations. We utilize coaching to fundamentally change behavior through growth in self-awareness and support people living in an intense and rapidly changing world.
Y&S Dr. Lauren Munsch Dal Farra, Co-Founder, CEO & Cardiologist PALM Health, Personalized, Advanced, Lifestyle, Medicine
Yoga & Spa Magazine’s Publisher, Stacy Oliver Neal, sat down with Dr. Lauren Munsch Dal Farra to get to know the CEO of the unique facility, PALM Health. Y&S
Tell us about yourself: What is your background?
Dr. L I am a 4th generation medical doctor. My father was an ophthalmologist; my grandfather and great-grandfather were internists. I earned my medical degree at St. Louis University, completed residency at Washington University School of Medicine and a Cardiology Fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. My specific interest in cardiology has led me to design personalized cardiac prevention and rehabilitation programs; however, my focus with PALM Health is broader. Currently, I am the CEO of PALM Health where I collaborate with colleagues and patients to find solutions to lifestyle- and stress-related illnesses, such as stress, anxiety, depression, weight management, diabetes, chronic fatigue, and cancer support. As a leading voice in well-being, I aspire to impact lives and promote sustainable health and happiness through prevention, education and coaching.
Y&S
Where did your vision come from to open PALM Health? Also, tell us about the Anthropedia Foundation you co-founded.
66 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JULY/AUGUST 2017
Tell us about your specialties and programs you provide. What are your goals for patient care?
Dr. L We provide a unique combination of highly personalized, preventive care and treatment to foster every aspect of physical, emotional and mental health. Our staff includes several certified doctors and health professionals with specialties in heart health, neurology, rheumatology, weight management, cancer support, anti-inflammation, mental health, fitness, spa services, nutrition and holistic medicine. In addition to primary medical care and mental health services, PALM also provides a wide range of complementary medicine services including acupuncture, biofeedback, a cryosauna, infrared sauna, and a Himalayan salt room. Our goal for our patients is to focus on each person’s total health and wellness, offering comprehensive assessments and individualized coaching to create a wellness plan that fits their lifestyle and/or medical concerns.
Y&S
How do you spend your time when you’re away from your thriving medical practice?
Dr. L I take long walks and travel with my husband and his two sons. We enjoy the arts and culture here in St. Louis and wherever we travel. And, my husband and I love to create together. Not only is he a remarkable entrepreneur but he’s also a gifted interior designer, photographer, and a gourmet cook. In fact, he runs PALM’s café!
Y&S
It must take a great deal of energy to maintain your busy schedule. How do you take care of yourself?
Dr. L I try to live the model we have created here at PALM. I take advantage of the state of the art facility here. I love the café, classes, spa and fitness equipment.
