From the Publisher Stacy Oliver Neal Push the Reset Button As we begin a new year and watch the ball drop in Times Square, the excitement is all about celebrating that we get to push the reset button. We say goodbye to all that was challenging and say hello to a fresh start. Here are a few ways I like to kick off this reboot: • Vision Board – On New Year’s Day I get out the poster board, magazines and scissors, glue gun, markers, tape, and go to town! Creating my vision board gets my creative juices flowing. It inspires and supports me to change and grow while getting my momentum going for the year ahead. • Me First – I plan my self care regime in my phone calendar and my work life is then scheduled around me first. I put in my morning journal and meditation time, workouts, time in nature, yoga, and life coach sessions. When I feel supported, the sky is the limit. The better I feel the more I have to give to others. • Financial Goals – Sticking to my calendar’s self care schedule increases my prosperity. If I am taking care of myself, everything else falls into place because I have the energy, fearlessness and support to take action. Creating a spending and savings plan increases the potential for it to become reality. I dream it and then take the action to make it happen. • Recommit – Lastly, to complete my restart I recommit to my health, mission, prosperity, and relationships. The new year is always an opportunity to choose what is important and where I will focus my energy. That’s why each year I recommit to eliminate negative thinking and people. Life is too short to settle. The sudden deaths of several friends just before the holiday season reaffirmed for me the precious and fragile gift we call life. This journey can end in an instant, and every conversation we have with a loved one could be our last. Make it a good one. Love becomes the priority and the world news becomes trivial as you listen to a beloved’s eulogy. Where will you focus your energy this year? What we focus on grows. Remember that worry is using your focus and imagination to create a negative outcome. Gratitude can always shift our experience, pulling us out of self-pity and leading us back to the joy of creative living!

Letter from the Editor Elizabeth Diebold
Choose your vision for 2018 What do you envision for your life? It’s a great question to ask yourself as we begin to turn over another year. As I look at the past year of my life, I see a tremendous opportunity to reflect on experiences I have had. All of them have made me who I am today.
Each of us has the opportunity to choose to accept all of our experiences and to learn from them, as life always has something to teach us. It is up to us to not just take life as it comes, but to choose how to react in any given situation. You may not always know what to expect in life, but you can choose how you respond. Whether the coming year holds a continuation of your current journey or the start of something new, always remember that you have a choice. Through self-reflection, intentional thinking, and direct action you can begin to reshape your life by first rethinking your reactions. Consciously examining your decisions and making choices that help you fulfill your potential is a gift each of us receives every day. In the new year, consider setting aside time to appreciate and be grateful for the choices you make. What I love about life is that you can choose to reinvent yourself. You can choose to do better, and you can always change things. Life is not static, life is ever moving. Life is wonderful when you realize that you can make a difference and you set out to create something better, bigger than yourself, if you choose. We all have the power to choose differently within ourselves. As you wind down 2017 and begin to dream how you want your life to be in 2018, don’t hold back. Envision the best version of yourself and go after your dreams!

Determining the best time for mammogram screening
When and how frequently a woman should undergo a mammogram screening has been under debate over the last several years due to changing recommendations, but the physicians of the Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist Medical Center have not changed their recommendations. As the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women in the United States, early detection for breast cancer is critical to saving lives and developing a comprehensive treatment plan when needed. Geoffrey Hamill, MD, medical director of the Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist Medical Center and a diagnostic radiologist specializing in mammography, continues to recommend, along with his colleagues, that women at normal risk begin their annual mammogram screenings at age 40. According to Missouri Baptist’s clinical data, 27.9 percent of the breast cancer diagnosed at the hospital since 2007 were in women under the age of 50. “It’s critical to get the word out about screenings because there have been changes in recommendations in recent years,” Dr. Hamill says. “This often creates a lot of chaos and confusion for patients.”
In fact, a most recent report by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends average-risk women be given the option of screening beginning at age 40, accompanied by shared decisionmaking between the patient and her physician to discuss the benefits and risks of mammography. (ACOG goes on to recommend women wait no later than age 50 for screening if they have not had a previous mammogram.)
‘Early detection for breast cancer is critical to saving lives and developing a comprehensive treatment plan when needed.’ “We believe in shared decision-making between patients and their primary care or OB/Gyns, where they can discuss their screening, results and what to expect if treatment is necessary,” Dr. Hamill says. “This is an important part of personalized medicine.” The idea of personalized medicine at the Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist is reflected through its program for women with elevated risk for cancer. The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment & Genetic Counseling Program at Missouri
16 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018
Baptist provides comprehensive breast cancer screenings and a customized surveillance plan for patients with increased risk for breast cancer, such as personal or family history of breast cancer, deleterious gene mutations including BRCA1 or BRCA2 and CHEK2, as well as previous history of mantle irradiation for NonHodgkins lymphoma. These additional screening options are also relevant to women with extremely dense breast tissue and elevated lifetime risk scores. Effective January 2015, Missouri passed its breast density law requiring women be notified about their breast density. “If we identify a patient with extremely dense tissue and an elevated risk, we believe in moving forward with additional screening options to improve our ability to detect breast cancer that may be hidden by overlapping breast tissue,” Dr. Hamill says. The Missouri Baptist Medical Center mammography van will be at the Living Fit Expo on Saturday, January 27. To schedule a mammogram, call 314-996-5170 or 800-870-5731.

Vitamins & Vitality It is well established that good nutrition promotes health, while nutritional deficiencies can lead to many chronic diseases. Yet, many people underestimate the importance of achieving proper levels of micronutrients each day. For the human body to complete vital daily tasks, it must be given a wide and complex variety of key micronutrients. Micronutrients play a role in strengthening immune function and converting food into energy. They detoxify chemicals and medications, and manufacture neurotransmitters, hormones and other key signaling molecules in the body. Micronutrients also maintain tissue repair and cell regeneration. Becoming deficient in any one of these essential vitamins or minerals can create a breakdown in metabolic processes that safeguard health.
A complete multivitamin will provide baseline nutrition, protect against stress-induced nutrient depletion and support healthy metabolism. Healthy metabolism is the key to vitality. We challenge you to upgrade to a professional grade multivitamin this year. We invite you to bring this article to our pharmacy with any of your vitamin related questions for a free 30 minute nutrient consultation. We wish you the best in 2018! & BEAUTY Anti-aging at its best! Activated Charcoal Products
Wellness From Wendy
From the Outside in with Lemongrass Spa
Our bodies are naturally designed to detoxify, which simply means taking in the good and eliminating the bad. For instance, the act of breathing in fresh oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide is detoxifying. But when our bodies can’t keep up with natural detoxifying we suffer the consequences through premature aging. The effects of premature aging can often be seen in the skin. You can suffer from conditions such as dark circles, acne, dullness, dehydration, or even sallowness. Luckily, there is one ingredient that is readily available and effective in helping with the detoxifying process: activated charcoal. Activated charcoal (or carbon, as it is sometimes called) is a highly absorbent, non-toxic substance that acts like a magnet to many substances, including dirt, impurities, and oil, among others. It can be used for insect bites and is often given internally to people who suffer from poisoning because it has the ability to absorb the poison and safely eliminate it from the body. Activated charcoal works the same way on your skin, drawing impurities, chemicals, oils, and toxins out and safely eliminating them when you rinse with water. A word of caution though: more is not necessarily better. Activated charcoal is so effective that it should not be used on a daily basis and is typically used just once or twice a week. Used too often it can dry out
the skin, which may lead to other skin problems. Lemongrass Spa recently launched three new skincare products handcrafted with activated charcoal to help your skin detox. Incorporating these products into your skincare routine, or using them all together once or twice a week, will help reduce your skin’s aging process. Your skin will feel luxuriously soft and rejuvenated with each use! If you live in a city or suburb, I would recommend using activated charcoal products more often, as the exposure to pollution is much higher in those areas. Here are some ways you can incorporate each new product into your skincare routine and achieve healthier skin.
Detoxifying Charcoal Face Soap Replace the cleanser you use at night with Even if you work at home, stepping outside for a walk or running errands exposes you to pollution. Replace the cleanser you use at night with this face soap to help your skin detox from the environmental pollution it has absorbed throughout the day.
Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Polish Mixing activated charcoal with a gentle exfoliator is a double detox. Not only are you removing dead skin build up, you’re allowing the activated charcoal to work

deeper. After you give this product a gentle scrub on your skin, allow it to sit for 1-2 minutes to let the activated charcoal absorb before rinsing. Enhanced with acai berry and raspberry seed oil antioxidants, you’ll enjoy a subtle fruit essence with every application. This facial polish is perfect when you don’t have time to do a full facemask or detox system, so include it in your routine once or twice a week.
Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Mask This mask is great to add to your routine when you have at least 10-15 minutes to be able to enjoy the maximum benefit. If you chose to do your full detox routine once a week, then apply this mask after you have cleansed with the Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Soap and used the Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Polish. The Missing Link: Extremity Adjusting Dr. Brenda Kingen, DC
The chiropractic approach that works so well with the spine can be applied to other joints of the body. Virtually every joint of the skeletal system is susceptible to fixation (slight misalignment of the joint) that can impair function and range of motion. Most tendonitis or bursitis will occur because of a corresponding joint fixation that will have you compensate and consequently, the “itis” occurs. These are most commonly referred to as repetitive stress injuries.
Examples of joint problems throughout the body: Jaw: Stress, teeth grinding, and spinal problems can cause TMJ
Physician-administered treatments: • Precision Tx™ Laser Contouring • Pearl® and Pearl Fractional® Laser Resurfacing and Skin Tightening • Botox,® Juvederm,® Radiesse,® Restylane,® Kybella®
(temporomandibular joint) disorders where your jaw connects to your skull. Chiropractic care can help to reduce pain, stiffness, clicking sounds or locked jaw.

Shoulder: Shoulder pain or pain radiating down the arm can be accompanied by weakness, numbness or tingling in the wrists or hands. The most common condition I see is the shoulder impingement due to poor posture (rolled shoulders).
Esthetician-administered treatments: • Pellevé® and SkinPen® Skin Tightening • Microdermabrasion, Facials, Peels • Laser and IPL Therapies • Waxing and Eyebrow/Eyelash Tinting

Elbow: Classic tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is a repetitive strain injury. It is seen among carpenters, mechanics, office workers, golfers and those who perform repeated hammering, grasping and rotary forearm motions.
Wrist: Carpal tunnel syndrome is usually due to compression of the median nerve as it passes through the band of ligaments in the wrist. In many cases, the underlying cause is a misalignment of one or more joints of the neck, shoulder, elbow and/or wrist.
Hip/Knee: While the chiropractic adjustments of the hips can produce excellent results, many hip problems can be caused from malfunctioning joints above or below the pelvis.
Ankle: The ankle is the most frequently injured joint in the body. “Pronation,” in which the feet flare outward and kneecaps rotate inward, is the most common foot problem. When weak arches cause the bones of the foot to drop to an unstable position, stress on the foot increases. Adjusting malfunctioning joints of the feet can reduce tenderness, improve your gait and stabilize the entire skeletal system. Dr. Brenda Kingen of Kingen Chiropractic Wellness Center has almost 25 years of experience. She utilizes Chiropractic adjustments, Active Release Technique, Acupuncture and Laser therapy in her practice. When chiropractic techniques are applied, range of motion can be improved and painful inflammation reduced without the use of drugs or surgery!

New Year, New Goals, New You Each year we have a unique opportunity to envision a new life for ourselves and it all starts with a simple decision. A decision to break old habits, create new ones and stick to them. Whether you have desires to improve your fitness, nutrition, relationships, career or overall health this year, you must first get your brain on board and decide to act. Habits are formed in as little as 21 days, so if you can achieve your best month ever, you’ll create habits to propel you to your best year ever. I’d like to let you in on a few ways to hijack your brain in order to highlight your year. There are three well researched ways to physically change your brain into a goal-crushing machine: positive thoughts, quick action and physical movement. According to research done by Caroline Leaf and Dr. Joseph Dispenza separately, your thoughts can either create healthy neurological pathways or they can create toxic ones. Yes, this means you can think yourself healthy and successful or sick and defeated. Positive affirmations are the best way to cultivate positive
thoughts. One word fitly spoken is more powerful than a thousand words wrongly timed. Speak well to yourself… think and say aloud: I have health and healing in every cell in my body! In Mel Robbins’ latest book, The 5 Second Rule, she talks about “push moments”. It’s in these moments where we can act quickly to change our life or let hesitation and fear overcome our being and never achieve or do what we wanted. The time between deciding to do something and actually doing it must be small if you’re ever going to not talk yourself out of it. If this gap of time is too large, your brain is less likely to actually make the move. Just do it! Indisputably, the most important of all three brain hijacks, physical movement, is often the most ignored. Dr. Roger Sperry said that 90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by movement of the spine. If your brain is your master control center where you make rational decisions, where you experience emotion, where your neurological pathways originate and where all health and healing is

For women, especially over 35 years old, weight loss and maintenance is often an ongoing battle. It can be confusing determining what is best with all the options out there for weight loss. The reality is that all of them (low carb, low fat, no sugar, portion control, exercise) will enable you to lose weight. What most women struggle with is keeping that weight off. Let’s face it, yo-yo dieting can be frustrating, costly on your closet and just downright exhausting. At Complete Fitness, we offer a program that not only focuses on healthy eating choices, but also on another key component: balanced hormones. We educate our members during our 20 pounds/30 days Fast Track Program about the hormones that hold them back, and guide them through the process of resetting that delicate balance so their bodies become efficient at losing body fat. Once we reach the ideal hormonal balance, we begin to customize each member’s personal eating plan through the Listen to Your Body program. Imagine what it could be like to know exactly what foods help your body to lose weight and keep it off! The benefits don’t stop at weight loss. Our members report that the health benefits they notice far outweigh the results on the scale. Many experience lower blood pressure, more restful sleep, lower cholesterol, joint pain alleviated, hot flashes and night sweats gone, acid reflux gone and increased energy to do the things they love. Our goal is not just weight loss; we strive to teach our members a lifestyle that will keep them happy, healthy and fully alive.

Empowering You Today
Where Eclectic Meets
Rustic Soul
by Brett Henderson
Beth Kemph has been working out with professionals all over the US for over two decades, but she’s finally feeling real success at e3 in Creve Coeur, MO. Beth, a mother of two, has lost over 20 pounds of fat in the last year. She attributes her success to the relationships she’s built with the coaches at e3 and the other clientele. According to Beth, it’s a combination of the coach, environment, atmosphere and your own resolve that makes the difference. We sat down with Beth after her work out recently as she described the path that led her to getting out of the pre-diabetic classification, reducing her blood pressure and feeling healthier than she’s felt in years. What led to your weight gain? Looking back, I️ have had a lifelong addiction to food. I️ overcame a pretty severe eating disorder in my 30s. Part of therapy was learning to be ok with being overweight. That was ok until the therapy resulted in being diagnosed with hypertension, high cholesterol and pre diabetes. I️ had a serious addiction to food. What have you tried in the past? Once I️ decided to take back my life, I️ tried numerous treatment programs and workout facilities. I’ve been to three world-class weight loss camps in the USA, each for weeks at a time. I️ would return home only to gain the weight back and begin my struggle all over again. Why have you been successful at e3? Good question. Well, since I️ started over a year ago I’m down over 20 pounds of fat weight, and I continue to keep i️t off. More importantly I️ am no longer pre-diabetic, I️ am off my blood pressure meds and my cholesterol is normal. My coach at e3, Brett Henderson, has encouraged me to never give up. The coaches at e3 have designed workouts that keep me going. I’ve been able to continue working out through two major injuries. They even design workouts that I️ can do when
I️ travel. Believe me, I’ve had trainers all over the world and these guys are some of the best! I️ guess besides their expertise, they really care and that makes all the difference for me. How did you find e3? I️ became friends with one of the participants of a fitness camp in California who was also from Saint Louis. He said e3 is where he had worked out in the past and suggested I️ give I️t a try.

What obstacles have you had to overcome? I’ve had a broken foot, twice! Sometimes, I miss workouts because of travel and illness, but the coaches do a great job of getting me back in without me injuring myself. What’s your favorite thing about exercising? No matter what, I️ always feel better after, even if I️ didn’t have my best day. What have you changed about your nutrition? Nutrition is still a work in progress, but I’m drinking less calories and reducing my sugar intake. The coaches at e3 believe in sticking to one or two attainable goals at any given time. What advice do you have for anyone reading this? I️ can think of three points that have helped me. Never ever give up. Be honest with yourself. Finally, no one can do this for you, so have faith and believe in yourself.

Strength Changes Everything
For many years the idea of exercise has been shaped around the notion that if we just “get moving” we can burn calories, improve cardiovascular health and tone muscles. Even though people exercise more than ever before, and our nation has an obsession with dieting and eating less, optimum health and fitness have eluded the majority of Americans. Since the inception of The Exercise Coach over 20 years ago, we have created an evolutionary approach to exercise that aids in the improvement of overall health and fitness by focusing on Muscle Quality. If we take the approach that maybe “calories in / calories out” isn’t the solution and focus on how muscle quality can improve our quality of life we open ourselves up to a more effective and efficient approach to exercise and fitness. Muscles have been called the windows to every system of the body. If we start with this premise we can see how transformative whole effort exercise can be by requiring the body to make positive adaptations. As we improve muscle quality we also positively affect neurological activity and the ability to recruit more muscle fibers, which leads to muscular growth and the ability to improve glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Other benefits include, improved cardiovascular function, stronger tendons and bones, better food digestion, endocrine system enhancement and aiding our body to actually slow down the aging process.
It is our belief that one should create a BALANCED yoga practice and a life of Mind, Body and Spirit.
At The Exercise Coach we have the world’s smartest workout in the country that uses advanced technologies to measure the unique muscular ability of each client and activate more muscle fibers which gives them a more effective and efficient workout. Every one-on-one workout is performed with the guidance of a Certified Coach and features real-time digital feedback. ENJOY STRENGTH!!

To Get the Most from Your Practice, Embrace the Savasana by Liz Roodman
I’m just here for the Savasana. If you’ve attended a yoga class, you may have heard this favorite saying and thought “Wait, what does that mean?” You are here for yoga, it doesn’t make much sense to lie down and take a nap. Or, perhaps it does. This may sound odd coming from a yoga teacher, but even I would go in for a class and tell the teacher that I had to leave early, before the Savasana at the end because I couldn’t calm myself long enough to stay the extra few minutes. Now, just five years later, the Savasana has become my favorite pose, both in my own practice and when I teach. Once you know the pose, you may find yourself looking forward to the Savasana as well. Savasana is the final pose in a yoga practice. Known as the “corpse pose,” it is described as arranging your body very deliberately to lie on your back. The pose allows gravity to do its work; helping you find your spine’s natural curves and letting go of the muscle energy you fired up in all those Warrior Poses!
Savasana pose is integral in helping us to find our balance, relax and release stress. As we commit to stillness, we begin to shift to the parasympathetic “rest or healing” state that benefits our mind and body. There is an art and a high level of skill involved in the Savasana, however, so keep practicing and don’t be too hard on yourself, it may take some time to master.
For the best results in your final pose follow these steps • Separate your legs toward the front corners of your mat – allow your feet to relax and fall outwards. • Open your arms away from your sides, turning palms up, and rotate your shoulder blades drawing them underneath you – place a blanket under your head if your chin is higher than your forehead.
• Beginning at the crown of your head move your awareness down your body to what is touching the ground – make sure left and right sides are equally balanced. • Once still, allow your front body to melt towards your back body and your back body to relax to the ground underneath. We all come to the yoga mat for different reasons: flexibility, to work out, balance, strengthening, stress reduction. Savasana is a pose for wholeness of mind and body. See if you can reap the full benefits of yoga and stay for the Savasana. Liz Roodman is an E-RYT 200 and has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy. She teaches at Sweet Peace Yoga in Kirkwood, MO
• Lengthen your neck, and rest on the lower back of your skull – paying special attention to relaxing the facial muscles including the jaw. In a world of multi-tasking and overworking • If your low back feels uncomfortable – our brains and bodies, the ability to relax add a bolster or rolled up blanket under is a necessity, but we most often maintain your knees. a sympathetic “fight or flight” state. Laurie Jane Active Wear takes you from the gym to the streets in style by Tina Farmer
How many times has your busy schedule found you packing multiple outfits just to get through your day? Do you ever wish you could find fashionable, fitted workout gear that you can comfortably and confidently integrate with your everyday outfits? St. Louis based Laurie Jane Active Wear understands your dilemma and their line of fashionable athletic wear is designed to provide the coverage and support you need during your workout while looking good enough to wear almost anywhere. 30 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018
“It’s a real boost to walk into the gym in a workout outfit that you feel cute in. It doesn’t make the workout any easier, but it definitely gives me confidence when I can look in the mirror... I still look put together.
Approaching active apparel with an eye to luxury and style, founder Laurie Jane Tillman combines her love of fashion with her enthusiasm for maintaining a healthy, fit lifestyle that includes a variety of sport and fitness routines. She designs her workout wear to withstand the demands of vigorous exercise – everything from yoga and walking to running, kickboxing, and crossfit – and still look and fit great when you walk out of the gym. Laurie Jane’s on-trend workout clothes are a fashionable addition to any woman’s day-today wardrobe. “As a professional woman,” Laurie Jane notes, “I want the look and feel of luxury, even when I’m working out. But I had trouble finding gear in the styles I craved.” She looked for athletic clothing that included details and design elements popular in contemporary fashion, such as asymmetry, color blocking, silhouetting, and contour seaming, and was frustrated with what she found. “When I asked my friends, they quickly agreed that the ‘runway’ was missing from the workout,” Laurie Jane continues. “So I set out to combine the worlds of fashion and fitness, adding luxury and quality while ensuring fit and applicability at the gym.” Style, comfort, and real world appeal are at the heart of Laurie Jane’ Active Wear, and the company keeps that aesthetic top-of-mind when designing their athletic wear. The current collection includes popular colors and prints as well as a variety of necklines and pant styles, and many of the items can be mixed and matched to create new looks. “Our tops are particularly popular because they pair well with jeans or casual skirts, offering a comfortable alternative to a blouse that’s attractive and on trend,” Laurie Jane adds. Through their store and online catalog, Laurie Jane strives to be a woman’s one-stop shop for fashion-inspired fitness apparel that looks as good on the street as it does in the gym. Laurie Jane Active Wear is made with the same attention to quality as style. The fitness apparel line features high-end trims and zippers as well as quality fabrics that withstand repeated wearing and washing. “Our goal is to create comfortable, functional gym clothes
that can be incorporated into your everyday outfits, whether casual, lounge wear, or for the ultimate in travel comfort,” the designer and entrepreneur enthuses while stressing the versatility of her line. “There was a void in the market, we’re filling that void with Laurie Jane Active Wear.” The response to the stylish collection has created Laurie Jane ambassadors among her dedicated clients. They praise the quality and variety of the clothing, and women of all shapes and fitness levels frequently comment that Laurie Jane Active Wear gives them additional confidence when working towards their fitness goals. As one fan puts it, “It’s a real boost to walk into the gym in a workout outfit that you feel cute in. It doesn’t make the workout any easier, but it definitely gives me confidence when I can look in the mirror and feel like, no matter how much I’m sweating, I still look put together. Plus,” she adds, “the quality is so good and the fabrics keep their shape so well, I feel comfortable wearing my Laurie Jane gear anytime.” Fitness fashionistas can find the complete line of Laurie Jane Active Wear online (at lauriejaneactivewear.com) and at Cocktails, a beauty bar, on Delmar in the University City Loop district. The clothing line is available in women’s small, medium, and large sizes, online orders usually ship in one to three days, and new and seasonal items are added to the shop frequently. Laurie Jane Active Wear is also an active community member, joining with other sponsors to support women’s wellness and the fitness movement in St. Louis and beyond. You can find a schedule of upcoming events, as well as inspiring photos and comments from happy, healthy, Laurie Jane enthusiasts, on their Facebook page.

Studio: Jane’s House of Well-being and Shanti Yoga Lorraine Clarkson (TOP)
Lorraine Clarkson played competitive sports as a kid, but loved the stretching part the most. So, it was no surprise that, after multiple sports injuries, she was led to yoga. As she matured into an adult, the focus on breath, conscious movement, and inner awareness of her yoga practice reawakened her spiritual connection. She dove deep into her studies of the self, the power of the mind, and psychology. In 2010, Lorraine began teaching yoga. Lorraine’s favorite studios are Jane’s House of Well-being, where she received her 200 & 500 hr RYT training, and Shanti Yoga. Today, Lorraine is an adjunct teacher at St. Louis Community College and has an innovative mind-body center in Clayton, Sacred Healing Practices, where yoga philosophy permeates the work she does with the mind. Using Rapid Transformational Therapy and coaching, Lorraine communicates with the subconscious mind to gain higher understanding and awareness. Her clients rapidly clear blocks and old belief patterns that hold them back.

Yoga has been part of Sabina Bunic’s life for 15 years. Though her practice has been inconsistent at time, she finds the main attraction for her is yoga’s ability to help her relax and find inner peace. Working in the corporate world means busy days and full schedules, yoga helps Sabina relax and find calm from daily stresses. To continue her practice and encourage other professionals to join, she teaches Corporate Yoga at Pfizer on Mondays and Wednesdays, and she subs for Jaime Sanchez with West East Yoga at Olivette community when needed. Sabina is actively involved with the Health & Wellness industry and loves connecting with other people, so many of her hobbies are related to health, wellness, and service to others. Studio: Unity Yoga & Wellness Candi Hamill (BOTTOM)
A retired hairdresser with a busy, active life, Candi Hamill began practicing yoga in her early 20s and is still a dedicated enthusiast at 69-years-young! Five years ago, at an age when some might consider slowing down, Candi completed her 200 hr teacher training through The Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge Massachusetts. The experience was rejuvenating and ticked another item off her bucket list! Candi truly understands that yoga is an all-encompassing practice and she’s a dedicated yogini who practices with this in mind. You can find her in the studio almost daily, attending the many classes offered under mind, body, and spirit. In addition to maintaining good health, strength, and flexibility, Candi’s yoga practice has also been her way of finding her community. Candi moved to this area just five years ago, and Unity Yoga & Wellness has been a strong source of support for both yoga and friendships. An artist with an amazing well of mental strength and kindness, her presence in the studio is always known.

Studio: Go Yoga! Express Brent Horner (TOP)
A recent enthusiast, Brent Horner began his yoga practice in May 2017 when he attended a class at Go Yoga! Express taught by a friend. He had been curious about yoga for several years but had never taken the leap. After seeing his friend’s Facebook post he decided that it was time. Brent’s first experience was a hot yoga class, and he instantly knew this is where he needed to be. Since then he has made yoga a part of his daily routine, varying his practice with studio classes, yoga hikes, and outdoor yoga in parks. His excitement for the practice is continually renewed with each pose that he conquers. What Brent loves most about yoga is that there is always room for growth, both physically and mentally. Brent embraces these challenges and the opportunity to push himself to the next level.
Studio: Pure Hot Yoga John McCormick (MIDDLE)
An entrepreneur and the founder of startup Incentive Alliance LLC, and director/vice president at General Credit Forms, Inc., John McCormick has always kept a busy, active schedule. His hobbies include travel, cooking, golf, skiing, hiking, and yoga, which he first discovered ten years ago. John’s sister-in-law introduced John and his wife to yoga at a studio in Connecticut and, when the couple returned home, they searched for a local studio and found Pure Hot Yoga St. Louis. For John, the benefits of yoga have been dramatic and life changing. At the time of his first yoga class, John weighed 260 pounds and had limited mobility due to previous injuries and arthritis. Today, he maintains a healthy weight, between 205 and 210 pounds, and has been able
to resume many of his favorite physical activities, including golf, skiing, and hiking. John credits Carol and Erin, owners of Pure Hot Yoga, with helping him revitalize his life and activity levels. In the simplest terms, yoga has had a major impact on John’s body and physical health.
Studio: Unity Yoga & Wellness Tristan Burgmann (BOTTOM)
After graduating from college and moving back to O’Fallon, Tristan Burgmann practiced yoga at home for a while but something was missing until he found Unity Yoga and Wellness in Downtown O’Fallon. Tristan enjoys both the slow, meditative pace of Ashtanga and the fast, energetic pace of Buti and Rocket. They are very different styles of yoga, but he incorporates elements from each into every class. A music teacher in Mascoutah, Illinois, Tristan also believes that music students can benefit from yoga as well. He uses yoga in his classes to teach movement to young students and to build skills and strength in high school marching band students. Tristan’s goal is to get full lotus, but his left knee just won’t allow it… today. Through practice, he hopes to achieve the pose, whether in a month, a year, or ten years, and practicing at Unity has been a huge benefit. He has learned and accepted that life is a journey and that things take time, even mastering poses. The physical changes are great, but the mental lessons are the most important to Tristan. Through yoga, he’s learned to listen to himself, slow down, and breathe – benefits that are spilling into the rest of his life, too!

The Truth Behind The KETO Diet 34 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018
If you are a health conscious person, you probably have heard about a form of diet that has caught a lot of attention lately. This so called “keto” or “ketogenic” diet has been widely publicized as the new golden key to achieve ideal nutrition. In essence, it advocates high fat and high protein as the main source of daily calories while restricting carbohydrate intake. Proponents of this extreme diet claim it can help you lose weight, lower cholesterol and improve brain function. Others are more skeptical. Is this diet really effective, healthy or even safe to follow? Let’s take a closer look. The premise of ketogenic diet is based on two factors: first, one needs to limit calorie consumption to a very low level (well below 1500 cal for most people) in order to allow your body to utilize its own energy reserve; the next step is to restrict carbohydrate intake to deprive our body of glucose and force it to use an alternative molecule called “ketone” to generate energy. Since ketone is generated by breaking down fat, the process of ketogensis could presumably burn more fat from our body while also breaking down your muscle. It sound plausible in theory. However, in order for this diet to work, one has to keep his or her daily total carbohydrate intake below roughly 20 to 30 gram to reach ketosis state. To put this into perspective, a medium size apple has 25 gram of carb alone, and a cup of almond or broccoli salad has 20 grams of carb. The rest of your calories would have to come from meat, egg, butter, oil, cheese, fish and lettuce with very little fruit and other vegetables. It is truly a “butter on
butter” diet. Although it may produce a rapid weight loss over a couple of weeks, most people later gain back the weight they lost because they simply could not keep eating like that. That kind of rapid “yo-yo” weight change has been shown to increase mortality. There are also many potential health problems associated with the keto diet. Here are a few examples: 1.) In order to follow a high fat and protein diet one has to rely heavily on meat products, especially processed meat, which is known to increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease as well as overall mortality. 2.) Many people on the keto diet often eat low quality, processed, or fried food that contain high levels of harmful trans fat which can cause cardiovascular diseases. 3.) Eating too many green leaf vegetables could lead to bloating, cramping, gas and constipation. Lack of fruit and other vegetables likely would lead to nutrient deficiencies and people have to take vitamins and mineral supplements. Not to even mention the unpleasant side effects such as fatigue, bad breath, kidney damage and sleep problems. More importantly, despite numerous individual testimonies, there is simply no data that has evaluated the long term effect of the keto diet on human body because there has never been a region or a society in the world that has followed this diet over decades, let alone centuries. The two most often cited research studies suggesting weight loss benefits from high fat diets (not the same as keto diet) are both very small (120 individuals) with a very short follow up
(12 months). On the other hand, there were at least 20 large clinical trials with tens of thousands of participants over a much longer follow up time have shown no benefit of high fat/low carb over low fat/high carb diet for long term weight loss, cholesterol level or the risk of heart disease. Similarly, there has been no study so far to show any positive effects of keto diet on cardiovascular disease risk or brain function. The bottom line is, the keto diet may help you lose weight quicker in short term. However, the long term benefits of this diet remain elusive. Anyone who is considering the keto diet must set a strict limit on his or her daily calorie count. Keep in mind, drinking a bottle of 350 calorie butter coffee may not be that harmful, but, doing it without cutting back on other calorie consumption will surely make you gain weight. When seeking a healthy diet, one should adhere to the tried and true advice which is to limit total calorie intake, choose whole foods rather than their refined and processed counterparts, replace meat and other animal products with more plant based foods, have balanced food sources and not to eat too much of one thing.
At Karuna, we strongly advocate low calorie and balanced nutrition from whole plant foods without any added sugar or protein extracts.

Say goodbye to New Year’s resolutions to make real, lasting change Try these tips for lasting change! Let’s say goodbye to New Year’s Resolutions. Why? Because we try to overhaul our whole lives only to get overwhelmed and go right back to our old ways. After more than 30 years in this business, I know what makes good habits stick. Try these tips to make lasting change in your life. Start small and be specific. Instead of saying: I’m going to eat healthy this week, try: I’m going to eat a nutritious breakfast every day. Then decide exactly what your nutritious breakfast is going to be. Planning in advance keeps you from making a detour to grab a cake pop at Starbucks. Once you notice how good you feel when you meet your goal, you’ll want to do more. Keep your momentum going and tackle another specific goal. Plan a conscious indulgence. The occasional conscious indulgence actually helps keep you on track because you’re less likely to feel deprived. Just be sure to enjoy it mindfully. That means enjoying each bite, not stress eating a bag of cookies in front of the TV. Notice how things make you feel. In order to make real, lasting change, you need to listen to what your body is telling you. Write it down! Did this meal make you feel bloated, or did you it make you feel energized? Did that workout help you feel less stressed? Not only does it help you get in touch with your body, it’s great inspiration when you’re having a hard day!
You’ve got this! Monica Koch is the owner of klean&lean and has been in the fitness industry for more than 30 years. She uses her experience to help her clients make small changes to see big results. Monica Koch AFFA personal and group fitness Nutritious Life Certified www.kleanandlean.com

Alignment Basics: Chaturanga by Kellie Mathes
The physical foundation of yoga poses achieve proper alignment from the action in your Hands, Feet and Core. This is true in almost every pose. Here, we’ll explore Hands, Feet and Core action in plank and Chaturanga, as well as the transition between the two asanas. To set up into Plank Pose, start out belly down on your mat. Place your hands under your shoulders and spread your fingers wide. Tuck your toes under your feet. Pull your low abdominal muscles toward your spine. Press the backs of your knuckles firmly into the mat to lift your whole body up. It is the pressing down into your mat, that creates lift. Set your eye gaze about 18-24” beyond the top of your yoga mat. From skin to muscle to bone, hug your body toward its centerline. Balance your weight between your hands and the ball mounds of your feet, while pulling the low abdominal muscles in and up toward your spine.
Plank transition to Chaturanga With your eye gaze forward, bend your elbows so they are pointing directly behind you and shift the weight from the ball mounds of the feet to the backs of the toes. Pull the low belly in and up toward the spine and slide your shoulders away from your ears. Hug the leg muscles in toward the bones. Stop lowering when the elbows are in line with the rib cage and the whole body is level to the earth. Maintain level hips and shoulders as you bend your elbows to point behind you.
Some common misalignments and how to avoid them One of the most common misalignment happens when we release the core and the hips either dip toward the mat or up toward the ceiling while our chest dives down toward the mat. Keep the core engaged by pulling the low belly in and up toward the spine. Another common misalignment to avoid is driving the shoulders up toward the ears. Instead, squeeze the shoulder blades back and around the spine, while spreading the fingers wide.

Students at St. Louis U. High Begin Their Yoga Journey at a Young Age
Come try the hottest workouts in town! yogastlouis.com {hot yoga} 314.644.2226 {cool people} 6630 Clayton Rd.
Drink Juice. Feel Amazing.
Knowing the benefits you’ve received from your yoga practice over the years, do you ever wonder how you would feel if you could have started practicing yoga during your teenage years? Students at St. Louis University High School, a private, Catholic college preparatory school of approximately 1000 boys, have just that opportunity.
Beginning their sophomore year, students may take a semester-long yoga course for physical education credit. The class meets twice a week, 45 minutes a session, and is offered during the fall, winter/spring and summer semesters. Patrick Zarrick, a Physical Education Instructor and Certified Yoga Instructor through Just Practice Yoga, started offering the course in 2014 as a phys ed elective. Starting with a modest number of 12, the course has seen enormous growth since its inception. Classes regularly fill with a maximum number of 25 students per class, and in three short years over 300 young men have begun their yogic journeys.

For many of these young men the yogic journey is not as easy as they might have anticipated. “These guys are incredibly athletic and they’re amazingly tight, particularly in the legs, hips and shoulders,” says Zarrick. “Watching them move into their first downward dog is like watching a torture session,” he adds. That being said, Zarrick marvels at their progress throughout the semester. “Guys who couldn’t reach their toes in a forward fold or raise their arms in Warrior I show much more spaciousness, ease and comfort within a few months.’
What’s most surprised Zarrick is how much his students love the restorative poses and savasana. “When I first started teaching, I thought – here is a group of very competitive, goal-oriented, motivated young men – surely they’ll want high-energy, power-type classes and won’t be able to lie still for a minute,” says Zarrick. Yet whenever I give them a choice, they’ll almost always request “chill or restorative” classes. Why does this happen? “For many of these young men, from the time their heads come off their pillows, until the time their heads hit their pillows at night, they’re always “on,” states Zarrick. “Their yoga practice gives them the opportunity to ‘turn it off, to turn inward’, and they really enjoy that opportunity and realize the benefit of doing so.” Recently coaches of various sports have approached Zarrick about leading yoga sessions with their teams to take advantage of the benefits of mindfulness, flexibility and injury prevention. In addition, a number of his former students have continued practicing yoga and Zarrick will run into them at Yoga 6 where he teaches part-time. “When I see these young men I just can’t help but feel grateful that they have this unique opportunity, something I wish I could have embarked on in my younger years.”

LIVING FIT
Small Vessels?
Big Health Risk
By Dr. Chris Heeb, DC
Dr. Richard Couey, a professor emeritus of Health Sciences at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, who has studied cell biology for over 30 years, stated, “The basic function of all cells is: nutrition in, waste out.” Did you know that small blood vessels (also known as microvessels) contribute to fundamental physiological processes and pathological events, but may not necessarily garner the attention associated with big arteries and veins, and how they relate to disease and illness?
Until now… Blood is the body’s universal means of transport. Oxygen, nutrients, chemical messengers (e.g. hormones) and immune cells, etc., are all transported through our blood. As our cells receive these raw materials, our body is able to maximize optimum cellular health and accelerate metabolic waste removal. Every single living cell in your body needs a consistent supply of oxygen and nutrition. Research has shown that enhanced blood flow is the main road to optimum health. Did you know that 74% of the blood vessels in our bodies are comprised of microvessels and only 26% are arteries and veins? Microcirculation is so important to avoid the onset of cellular dysfunction, which ultimately leads to tissue or organ dysfunction where we observe symptoms of diseases. As expressed by the prefix ‘micro’, microcirculation refers to incredibly small vessels, as cells themselves are of course very small (cells in the body are not visible to the naked eye). Consequently, we have a huge network of extremely small blood vessels in our body, some of which are four times thinner than a strand of hair. Our bodies need good microcirculation as a foundation for healthy cellular metabolism, only then can your body
regenerate, self-regulate and self-heal. The optimal regulation of circulation is a prerequisite for ensuring good levels of health and fitness. It has been scientifically proven that optimizing several key physiological parameters in blood circulation are vital for healthy cellular metabolism so that the body is more efficient at healing itself.
But, how can we do that? Research has shown that we can activate our body’s own healing processes by transmitting information into the body as opposed to mere chemical, mechanical or energy stimulation. And, this technology is available to us. However, it does not heal or cure anything – it is not a drug or medicine. Yes, some call it the closest thing to the Fountain of Youth! Impaired microcirculation can lead to an energy deficiency in the cells, because the supply and removal of substances to and from these cells is insufficient. This leads initially to reduced physical performance and later to impaired functioning of the affected cells. If many cells of an organ or a tissue are affected, then corresponding symptoms occur, which can then be defined as an illness. If our cells are damaged, tissues and organs will die. Most cells have a defined life span, after which point they are renewed. Energy-deficient cells die prematurely. The consequences may be chronic degenerative conditions. Even our white blood cells, and therefore the effectiveness of our immune system, are directly dependent upon microcirculation and the energy condition of these cells.
42 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018
Practicing yoga helps with general blood flow, but what if there was a way to accelerate enhanced nutrient and oxygen supply and cellular waste disposal even further? We all practice yoga for our own reasons. One reason is to self-heal. Part of this process is the alignment of our body’s chakras and meridians. Practicing yoga regularly is beneficial to increasing general blood flow, but may be difficult and take longer for some, depending on our body’s biochemistry and underlying issues. By using this technology, one can accelerate general blood flow even further, resulting in enhanced oxygen supply and cellular waste removal throughout the body. This may correlate with more rapid chakra alignment. To learn more about this subject, contact Dr. Chris Heeb at (314) 265-2117 to reserve your seat for his upcoming presentations at Westborough Country Club in Kirkwood, MO – January 25th, 2018 and February 22nd, 2018. Seating is limited so don’t delay. For more info, check out our website at www.drheeb.com. Dr. Chris Heeb is a chiropractic physician in private practice for over 25 years. He has appeared on TV and radio regularly since 1995, and is now educating patients on a new revolutionary technology that enhances blood flow. Currently, he works with other medical specialists as a consultant to integrate this technology into their offices and is a frequent speaker on the subject of microcirculation.

Through the power of our mind we can create prisons or palaces, joy or suffering. The thinking mind is an awesome tool that’s meant to be used, but it pales in comparison to the inner wisdom of your intuition. When we master strengthening and igniting our inner powers we live more in the present and find an amazing source of creative power, wisdom and self-knowledge within us. Our inner power is realized when we tune in and connect mind, body and spirit. With this connection of mind, body and spirit comes peace of mind, a relaxed body and a sense of connectedness, a wholeness. We are mind-body-spirit. Think of the MIND as the powerful force that directs, controls and sets the stage of our experience; The BODY as the center of emotions, feelings and sensations that guide us in right or wrong action and to a deeper, more meaningful experience with life; and the SPIRIT as the invisible infinite intelligence that provides us with brilliant ideas and right action thru an inner guidance system we call our intuition. The BODY acts as our guidance and

It guides us if we will tune into it and listen. Pain and dis-ease are the body’s way of letting us know that it is out of balance. The body can heal many things all by itself or with the proper additives from nature, rest or exercise, and belief in healing. The MIND controls the BODY and we have control of the MIND. unique in how spirit is received. For some it is a knowing. Think about when you experienced a time of just knowing what to do or say with certainty. Some feel the intuition as a gut feeling, as in trusting your gut with something. Our intuition can also serve as a gentle nudge or a thought that seems to show up from nowhere, directing us to call someone or do something. As we begin to live in harmony with these three aspects of Self, life begins to flow joyously, effortlessly and confidently. We realize we are ENOUGH and we begin to live from the power within. Others have achieved a healthier lifestyle by curbing addictive urges for nicotine, controlled substances or obsessive behaviors. Those suffering the aftereffects of trauma—warfare, rape, injury or loss— have removed the horrible emotions and triggers tied to that event, which previously controlled their lives, sometimes for decades. The therapy involves rhythmic tapping of a particular spot on the patient’s body in order to manipulate the flow of energy that

all bodies possess. The technique works much like acupuncture without the use of needles. It is important to note that the clients tap on themselves while the therapist acts as a mirror demonstrating the appropriate tapping points. TFT differs from other tapping methods in that each feeling or behavior you are trying to diminish has a different tapping sequence based on the energy meridian it relates to. For this reason it works much faster than therapies that rely on the same tapping sequence for all problems. Thought Field Therapy is an effective, fast and pain-free method of eliminating the emotional aftereffects of trauma. Best of all, it produces unparalleled and nearinstantaneous results. Beth Koritz, M.Ed., is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She has additional certifications in Thought Field Therapy, Body Positive Psychology and Clinical Trauma. What is the Culprit And Can You Feel The Signs? by Rebecca Edwards, MSW, LCSW Burnout tends to sneak up on us. We experience subtle signs at first. Our necks might start to stiffen. Our shoulders gradually climb to our ears. Our eyes and head slowly grow heavy. We start to resent the task we are working on. And then the signs grow. Stress, exhaustion and burnout spreads through our minds and entire bodies. We may feel symptoms in a visceral sense- as if our nerves feel ‘fried’, ‘frayed’ or ‘burnt.’ This may be experienced as a headache, fatigue, irritability, or sensory sensitivity/irritability.” We may experience burn out in a disconnected way- feeling bored, numb, lacking energy, lacking motivation or enthusiasm.
Pay Attention to Your Signs We often berate ourselves up for feeling exhausted, ‘spent” or ‘done’ with something, as if we are a failure. We don’t honor the wisdom of our bodies’ cues. It is necessary to take our bodies seriously and take a break. When we don’t take a break, we release adrenaline and cortisol, which raise heart rate and blood pressure, slow digestion and metabolism, make it harder to concentrate and damage cognitive functioning. And being in a chronic state of crisis makes us sick. Burnout is when our physical, mental, or emotional tank hits zero and we may be overworked but more likely we are under-rested. Many of us try to push through burnout. We can’t refuel if we are always pushing, going, and doing. We can try to push through it in the short term but the danger is that the exhaustion becomes our normal. And when our normal is burnout, not only do we feel unhealthy, but we are choosing to be unhealthy. Eventually we will have to slow down, rest and refill our tanks. We can learn to respect our minds, bodies and ourselves by listening, slowing down when we need to, resting and calming when we can. This is how we can give to others and give generously.
Do you know the signs of burnout? 1. Irritability 2. Cognitive Difficulties-concentrating, focusing, memory 3. Difficulty in Work and Personal Relationships 4. Tension in body 5. Fatigue 6. Negativity 7. Losing Motivation 8. Problems Performing 9. Poor Self-Care 10. Boredom
What can you do? 1. Make sleep a priority 2. Be active 15-60 minutes a day 3. T ake 15 minute breaks/retreats at work and at home 4. Take control of your priorities 5. Say ‘No’ to tasks that are not on your priorities 6. Say ‘no’ to new things 7. F ocus on your strengths and delegate your weaknesses 8. B e intentional and schedule downtime daily – specific times in the day to reflect, rest, and recharge. 9. F ocus on the more challenging tasks at the time of day that you are most alert and have more energy 10. Get rid of distractions

One Cause,
Many Diseases by Christine Salter MD, DC
It is a simple but profound fact that there is one cause for the major diseases that result in death and disability. The mantra at the Centre For Vibrant Health And Wellness is “restoring health at the cellular level, one person at time”. We first identify the cellular dysfunction and then correct it. Since everyone is different and unique, we take a personalized, comprehensive, holistic approach to find the problem as well as to treat the problem. Our goal is for women and men to be Vibrant... Looking good, feeling great and being healthy. This approach takes into account lifestyle factors such as sleep deprivation, environmental factors such as pesticide exposure and toxic personal care products, biological toxins such as mycotoxins, electromagnetic toxicity from cell phones, microwave ovens, or power lines. To implement a comprehensive health restoration protocol, all potential health disruptors have to be addressed. What is the one cause of the diseases that result in death and disability? The one cause of heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, metastatic cancer, Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer Dementia? What do they all have in common? Mitochondrial Dysfunction! The medical and scientific literature is replete with information about mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria are small, sophisticated cellular organelles that are considered the powerhouse of the cells. They generate packets of usable energy currency. Without that energy we die. Inadequate production of that energy results in poor functioning on all levels. Many factors impact mitochondrial function. A fundamental cause of mitochondrial dysfunction is poor sleep. The rhythm as well as the amount of sleep are important factors for sleep quality. Melatonin, which is mainly produced during sleep is the body’s primary anti-oxidant for the mitochondria. So, while we sleep, we repair damage done to the mitochondria during the day. To be a Vibrant Man or Woman... to look good, feel great and to be healthy, it is important to identify and treat all the causes

What Would You Do with an Extra Day Each Year? What would you do with 30 extra hours? It may seem like a rhetorical question, but in reality, if you spend five minutes each day messing with glasses or contacts, getting LASIK will save you over 30 hours each year. That’s a lot more going to the gym, binge watching Netflix, doing yoga, exploring the outdoors, or enjoying the people (or pets) you love!
So what’s holding you back? Even if you’ve been told you are not a candidate for LASIK due to astigmatism, severe vision issues, age or other issues, there is still hope. Brinton Vision may have the solution you need to see and enjoy life with crisp, clear vision. To find out if you are a candidate for LASIK or any of its six modern variations, schedule a Brinton Vision Ocular Analysis online or call Brinton Vision today!

Seeing Beyond Appearances by Marilyn Eagen
‘Take a different perspective and look at the things that we can change...’ Winter time is typically a time for quiet and contemplation, according to many indigenous groups around the world. I totally agree that is how it feels to me. And in these powerful changing times, there is so much to think about and plan in our lives. In this very unique time, I will offer something for you to contemplate and also offer a nice exercise to help you connect into yourself. The past several months, I have worked with several people in my practice who are really having some difficulty accepting the world as it is right now and dealing with the constant changes that seem so irrational. I am going to suggest that we take a different perspective and look at the things that we can change instead of living in fear of the things we can’t change. I believe in this moment, although this is not what I had in mind either, that we are actually moving forward as a global community. I am inviting you to consider that what appears to be so crazy, could possibly be that all of these subjects and issues and conflicts are being brought to the surface to be seen, heard and finally healed. I do not know how long it can take for these issues to come to resolution in our society, however, I do know that it all had to come up from the buried space it has been residing. So, to me, this is progress. This is just a suggestion and a thought I would like to introduce to you that can allow some comfort in our bodies, minds and souls. I would love to expand more on what I am seeing and feeling about this, however, I invite you to just ponder this possibility.
I want to offer an exercise that helps you connect into your own heart and see how it feels to you. Sit in a comfortable chair, lay your right hand on top of your left hand and cross your thumbs and your little fingers, three middle fingers remain with right ones on top of the left. Now place your hands while still in the position on top of your head. Close your eyes and breathe deeply in the mouth and out the mouth for 3-5 minutes. Then move your hands while in the same position to your heart and continue the breathing. Observe how you are feeling and notice the connection between your heart and mind and the clarity that is available to you and choose how you “want” to feel in your life. Be gentle with yourself in this time of contemplation, use this exercise as often as you choose. Hopefully, you will find peace and clarity within you! “We can never make peace in the outer world until we make peace within ourselves.” Dalai Lama Marilyn Eagen of Holistic Harmony Lifecare and owner of The Peace Place. Relapse Prevention
in Addiction & Mental Health Disorders It’s not uncommon to find that people suffering with substance addictions also often have other mental health problems. It’s not always clear which came first, but both need to be treated in order to provide the best scenario for recovery. Common mental health disorders coupled with substance use disorders include: anxiety disorders, depressive symptoms, bipolar spectrum disorders, attention-deficit disorder, psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, PTSD associated with traumas and chronic pain conditions. Substance addiction is often a chronic, relapsing illness which impacts every aspect of an individual’s mental and physical health and well-being. Relapse indicates a return to prior, old behavior. Relapse is often part of a learning curve for individuals who are trying to learn new, healthier behaviors and skills, to take care of themselves differently and maintain sobriety. Untreated symptoms of mental illness may repeatedly trigger relapse to substance use. Post-treatment withdrawal symptoms may de-stabilize individuals in early sobriety, causing increased stress and may trigger cravings, thoughts about drinking/ drugging to reduce temporary discomfort.

Skeletal Strength Improves Overall Health
by Laura and Johnny Harper
The skeletal system is the foundation for your body and provides more than just strength and protection. It is arguably one of the most critical systems of the human body; and by implementing a strategy to care for and strengthen it, many experience the following results: • Improved Athletic Performance • Improved Bone Density • Improved Posture • Improved Balance • Less Joint and Back Pain OsteoStrong is a unique place where you can go to improve your overall health by focusing on the one thing we all have in common: a skeletal system. It works for people of all ages and levels of activity to promote skeletal strength, which impacts the entire body in many ways using a process known as Osteogenic Loading. Sessions are quick, painless and the results are measurable and happen quickly. OsteoStrong’s Spectrum system was invented by the Father of Osteogenic Loading, Dr. John Jaquish, Ph.D. Dr. Jaquish is the Chief Science Advisor for OsteoStrong and author of Osteogenic Loading. Dr. Jaquish has been a frequent speaker at the World Congress on Osteoporosis and is on the board of American Bone Health. His contributions to the OsteoStrong brand have been invaluable in bringing this technology to the world.
Research shows that the stimulus required to trigger osteogenesis (growth of healthy bone tissue) is 4.2 multiples of body weight (4.2 MOB). Achieving that level of stimulus would be difficult for many without the Spectrum System. However, OsteoStrong members easily, safely and without injury or pain achieve forces in excess of 5 to 12 times their own body weight. High-impact is one of the most powerful stimuli the musculoskeletal system can experience. The scientific research shows that the results are available to people of all ages and fitness levels. Spectrum consists of 4 separate devices. Under the supervision of a trained technician, each Spectrum device allows individual members to experience the precise level of force for their musculoskeletal system. Members only need to experience brief levels of force to get the benefits. The entire circuit only takes a few minutes to complete and once the stimulus has been experienced, the central nervous system can trigger osteogenesis.
As many have seen with OsteoStrong, bone density can be brought to levels more than two standard deviations above what is considered to be normal. This means your body has a more powerful frame, will allow more muscular engagement and, thereby, more muscular strength and power. Now open in Creve Coeur: 12333 Olive Blvd, 314-300-6902 and our newest location in O’Fallon: 44 Crossroads Plaza, 636-238-8696 To experience this profound system for FREE, CALL OsteoStrong today or go to: www.OsteoStong.ME Laura and Johnny Harper, owners of OsteoStrong St. Louis, invite you to experience two FREE sessions of skeletal strength conditioning
Improved Athletic Performance OsteoStrong technology has been shown to trigger bone density growth, but why does this matter to an athlete? Other than protection from fractures, skeletal strengthening in many cases eliminates limitations to plateaus and muscle growth.

Getting Off the ‘Hedonic Treadmill’ C. Michael Unterreiner, ChFC
Have you ever received a raise and then wondered where it went? You probably went through the following “five stages of achievement:” • Happy - to have more money • Proud - of your achievement • Satisfied - in spending this extra money • Confused - that here isn’t any more left at the end of each month • Driven - to achieve another raise or reward
Or perhaps, instead of “driven,” you may be “deflated” by the first four stages. Economists call this the “hedonic treadmill”: as a person makes more money, expectations and desires also rise, with no long-term increase in happiness. We quickly become accustomed to our new spending level. However, if you save your raises for later, you’ll be able to see that additional money in an account somewhere, and use it for future goals. Set a Budget Only a small fraction of Americans budget their expenses. So it isn’t surprising that the majority of households spend every dollar they earn, and often more. Build a simple budget. It doesn’t need to be detailed; in fact, it is easier for you to follow if it has only a few, broad expense categories. Save Your Raises Unless you have debt that you need to pay off (which should always come first), set aside a large portion of that raise for your future. Do it automatically, through payroll deduction or a monthly draft from your bank account. The idea is to put savings on autopilot, until the day when you are ready to focus on it. But until you do, you’ll know that your savings are moving in the right direction. We Can Help Once you’re committed to saving, you may look for ways to invest that money. It may be worth getting expert advice to create a financial plan and investment program. A financial planner can help you track your progress towards retirement and other shorter-term goals. C. Michael Unterreiner, ChFC, founded Financial Legacy Associates to create an environment where financial professionals could serve their clients better by sharing their experiences and ideas. He has served his clients by recommending investment and insurance solutions to their financial planning, retirement planning and college funding challenges. 16020 Swingley Ridge Road, Suite 100 Chesterfield, MO 63017 | 636-777-7099, mikeu@financiallegacy.com www.financiallegacy.com/michael-unterreiner.

Finding Your Light: 5 tips for brightening darker days
Currently, light therapy is still the most effective treatment for this condition, but we can’t all book a vacation to a sunny beach. To help you maintain a better mood no matter where you’re spending the season, we offer five tips for combating the unpleasant sideaffects of winter’s darker days. Find your natural light and let it shine on you.
In addition to colder temperatures and unpredictable weather, winter brings longer nights and shorter, darker days. For some of us, the season can trigger bouts of depression as well as weight gain, feelings of exhaustion, and an overall lack of enthusiasm. Scientists have not only confirmed the connection between winter’s darker days and our moods, they’ve given it a name: Seasonal Affective Disorder* (SAD).
1. Say “Hello!” to morning light Our body’s rhythms are aligned with the movements of the sun, so getting a dose of natural light first thing in the morning often provides an immediate boost. Find a window with good morning light and stand in front of it as you enjoy your morning beverage or do light stretches.
2. Utilize all available light sources During the day, choose to work and sit in bright spaces with lots of windows. On cold days, bundle up and get outside while the sun is shining, whenever you can. Choosing to park a little further from the building on cold but sunny days will boost your mood and your steps count.
Add a little modern technology for maximum impact 3. Pick a brighter bulb For overhead lighting, choose a bright 150-watt bulb for general lighting, then supplement by adding table and floor lamps with 50- to 60-watt bulbs. For an easier transition to evening light and sleep, use lamps exclusively as the sun sets.
58 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018
4. Capture the sunrise with a dawn simulator These deceptively simple lights gradually brighten your room, mimicking the effects of dawn and smoothing your transition from sleep. They are particularly effective on those cold mornings when the alarm clock wakes you before sunrise.
5. Invest in a light box For some, investing in a light box, which emits a brighter blue frequency thought to have the highest impact on mood, can provide significant benefit. Laptop and device screens are a darker blue than light boxes, so they don’t have the related boost, but they are bright enough to stimulate your senses and slow sleep. That’s why it’s important to dim or switch off your devices at least 15 minutes before going to bed. * The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) defines SAD as a type of depression associated with seasonal change. Onset typically occurs late fall to early winter and relief arrives with the spring. (NIMH website: https://www.nimh.nih.gov/ health/topics/seasonal-affective-disorder/index. shtml)
Happiness is a Life-Long Journey by Dr. Ed Katcher
In 1966, I was in the United States Air Force, stationed at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Ubon, Thailand. I lived in a hut which housed forty enlisted personnel. My total belongings were my uniforms and a few toiletries. My space consisted of a thin, military rack bed and a foot and wall locker. My entire living space was approximately three by nine feet. The walls of our hut were made of screen so obviously there was no heat or air conditioning. In fact our only amenities were five lights hanging from open trusses and a few electrical outlets. We took cold showers in a screen walled latrine and ate every variety of powdered food. Our powdered eggs were green, OK for Doctor Seuss, but not too palatable. Our base was actively involved in the Vietnam War initiative, so we worked seven days a week. In the end, I was quite happy and healthy. Driven by thoughts of my upcoming honorable discharge I was fueled by hope, anticipation and the thrill of attending a university. Upon my discharge, I headed back to the United States with all my assets in hand, $811 U.S. dollars, some terribly worn fatigues, one dress uniform and a high school equivalency. I eventually wound up at the University of Missouri in Columbia, I had barely enough money to pay my tuition, eat and buy my books. I went to school all day and worked at night washing dishes, painting or whatever I could find. I lived in an attic with no phone only able to stand in the middle of its two tiny rooms. I was never happier or healthier. In maturity, I can see that a life with meaning and direction has more to do with happiness and health than material goods and comforts. In fact, several noteworthy medical doctors are embracing integrative health. Doctors are recognizing the significant physical, mental and comprehensive health benefits of being happy. Pushing ourselves in meaningful directions such as yoga, exercise, school or whatever we see as meaningful can and will have an impact on our physical and mental wellbeing. &S TRAVEL
Save Time & Money with Totally Trips By Jennifer Evans
The other day a friend of mine told me that they think they have appendicitis or possibly pancreatitis. I was naturally alarmed and asked, what did your doctor say? They said they hadn’t been to the doctor yet, then added that they guessed it could also be gas and there was no way to tell for sure. I shook my head and said, that’s what a doctor is for. Just like my friend who wanted to be her own doctor by searching her symptoms online, I run into people who think they are experts in travel because they can search flights online. They say, I saved $25 on my flight! I look at their flight details and don’t have the heart to tell them that they have an 18-hour layover and I could have saved them $100 on a direct flight. My name is Jennifer Evans and I run a full-service travel agency dedicated to providing the best possible vacation experience. At TotallyTrips we have been delivering premium vacations for
over a decade. Why does this make a difference to you? Our staff has over 100 years of experience putting together premium, specially tailored experiences for our guests. We travel to these destinations collecting firsthand knowledge which enables us to make sure you get exactly what you want out of your vacation. Many people are under the impression that booking with a travel agent is more expensive, but that’s not true. The commission that we receive comes from the resorts, not the consumer. And the best part of this experience is that if there are any issues during your trip, you have a name, a number, and a real person to help resolve any issues! So sit back, relax, and we’ll take care of all the work… well except for the packing. 131 East Main Street | Festus, Mo 63028 877-439-TRIP (8747) | Email: jen@totallytrips.com www.totallytrips.com

&S RESTAURANT RAVE
A taste of the Southwest Canyon Cafe offers customers a distinct taste of the Southwest that isn’t found anywhere else in St. Louis. In a renovation that took place last Fourth of July, the restaurant now boasts an atmosphere that’s as modern and welcoming as its food is scrumptious and unique. A new collection of charming antiques has been brought in to replace the collection that had occupied the restaurant for the last ten years. As before, traditional Southwestern motifs are sprinkled throughout the café.
The bar underwent the most impressive transformation of all. Glittering, multi-colored mosaic tiles serve as the backdrop for Canyon Cafe’s renowned collection of liquors. The minimal, contemporary lighting hanging above the countertop creates an inviting glow even during the daytime. Meanwhile, the offerings from the kitchen remain as up-to-date and delicious as ever. Executive Chef Francisco Bravo prepares a number of dishes from his hometown in Mexico that are consistently huge hits with restaurant-goers. The street tacos come in many varieties and can be mixed and matched for a customized experience. The chimichanga, a flour tortilla that is stuffed with grilled chicken, bell pepper, sweet corn, and Jack cheese, and then fried, is another of the restaurant’s most popular items. Plus, the famous Limit-2 margarita, often called “the best margarita in town,” is made with only top-of-the-line ingredients (and thus why you’re limited to having two!).
