Letter from the Publisher Marguerite Striler
There’s a Simple Solution to Aging Gracefully Like the haves and the have nots, when it comes to aging, there are those who age and those who age gracefully. You know, the lucky ones who appear to get better and better with age like a fine wine while the rest of us are still experimenting. We try product after product in search of the golden serum that will wipe away decades of sun damage only to end up disappointed and warehousing a basket full of unused products under our bathroom vanity. They, on the other hand, seem to have found a secret that keeps them energized and youthful. While spending time on the golf course with three beautiful, fun, energetic Graceful Agers, I learned a secret or two about how to age gracefully. The secret to Aging well is not ALL about the products we use - each woman in my foursome use different products. Granted genetics play a role but these women are not related. What these women do have in common are three very simple everyday habits - Exercise, Diet, and a Positive Attitude. At this point in my life, I understand the importance of exercise and a healthy diet but I never equated a positive attitude to how well we age. So, now what? How do I train my brain to be more positive? After doing some research, I learned that positive people, whether rich or poor, have figured out that in order to be happy, they needed to let go of any and all negative thoughts and images that bombard their mind and replace them with new thoughts and images that are positive. How do you do this? Well, there really isn’t one answer, it’s more of a journey. My personal journey to a positive attitude began with daily devotions and affirmations. Devotions are like exercises for our soul. They take the mind off of self-indulgent distractions and negative pursuits and replaces it with God’s purposes and plans for us. Daily Affirmations are like exercises for our mind. They are positive messages that make us aware of the beauty and the good in the world around us. By incorporating devotions and affirmations into my daily life, I was able to retrain my mind and my soul to eliminate negative and limiting beliefs. It replaced “I cant’s” with “I cans,” and fears and doubts with confidence and certainty. I’ll sign off with a few words of wisdom: Choose a positive lifestyle. Do your devotionals for the soul and your affirmations for the mind. Avoid negative people, places and things. Be thankful for what you have, rejoice, reflect and repeat. You will immediately begin feeling better, laughing more freely and looking more youthful - remember, less frowning means fewer wrinkles. Share your graceful aging tips with us at info@yogaspamag.com

Many Hands, One Purpose – A More Youthful You by Tina Farmer When it comes to slowing the hands of time, a holistic, team approach is often the most effective means of maintaining a healthy, youthful look and lifestyle. Many different factors, including eating well, exercising, and staying up-to-date on medical care, contribute to help you stay fit and well at every age. Looking as vibrant and youthful as you feel is another important part of living life to the fullest. At Aquarius Wellness, we take a team approach to helping you look and feel your best, and we’d like to introduce you to three members of our staff who share that dedication. Julie Bilyeu, an Esthetician with a Passion for Teaching Drawing on a background in medical aesthetics and a decade of experience as an esthetician, Julie Bilyeu believes that education is an essential component for healthier, youngerlooking skin. And, like any good teacher, she also believes in homework. “I really integrate home care,” says Bilyeu, a 41-year-old Xenon International Academy alumna. “I do my professional treatments, and I advise clients to come every three to four weeks, but I also sell the products.” Bilyeu doesn’t just assist clients in the office but also instructs them on methodologies to employ between appointments. “Basically, it is a team approach,” the native St. Louisan explains. “Clients can help maintain the results from the facial at home.” Bilyeu feels her strategy builds trust as clients see results through individualized treatment plans tailored to each person’s own unique needs. Cookie-cutters don’t work in skin care
and an anti-aging regimen has the greatest efficacy when the client understands the need and the mechanics of skin maintenance. Karen Higgins Knows that a Youthful Appearance is More than Skin Deep Beauty may be skin deep but Karen Higgins knows that keeping skin looking young goes a good deal deeper. “Skin care is not limited to what you do externally,” notes Higgins, a licensed graduate of the Skin Institute. As someone with degrees in nutrition from both Fontbonne University and St. Louis Community College, the 48-year-old understands how wholesome foods and an active lifestyle can help her clients at Aquarius achieve their skin care goals. A meal plan low in dairy and high in antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E and regular exercise are essential ingredients, as is drinking plenty of water. While Higgins offers treatments like facials and waxes, she stresses that healthy skin is rooted in overall health and advises clients on how to get the most out of their body by monitoring what they put in it. “I truly enjoy what I do,” Higgins concludes. My Hua Understands that Combating Aging is Both Art and Science Winning the fight for youthful aging means developing a strategy that uses the right tools to address each concern. “It is important to get facials regularly,” says Hua, a 29-year-old esthetician and licensed massage therapist who has worked at high-end spas across St. Louis. “It is like a workout for your skin, to keep your skin in shape like your body.”
6 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com |JULY/AUGUST 2018
That could entail anything from peels and masks to waxing and microdermabrasion. Hua, who is well versed in all of these techniques, notes that exfoliation promotes cell turnover, which helps keep her clients looking their best. Central to the process is Hua’s expertise with natural enzymes from the professional Skin Script line offered at Aquarius. Infusing the tissues with vital nutrients, these products can penetrate and enliven the epidermis, reducing fine lines and wrinkles with nourishing combinations like raspberry-peach and cherryblueberry. The result is fresher-looking skin that’s toned, moisturized and cleansed of makeup and pollutants. Hua, a California native and communications graduate from UMSL, now works to enhance her wellness training through the study of nursing. The reason is simple. “I like to make people feel better.” Bilyeu, Higgins and Hua are just three members of the team at Aquarius Wellness, all of whom are dedicated to helping you look and feel your best! Aquarius Wellness Center for Healing Arts offers massage, skin care, acupuncture, cupping therapy, Reiki & gemstone therapy, and spiritual health coaching. Founder Andrew Goodman has created a unique, boutique, holistic environment that supports relaxation and renewal from the moment one enters their space, giving credence to their tagline, “Sanctuary for the Senses”! Top 3 Anti-Aging Benefits from Floatation Therapy Floatation therapy, or Floating, is a fabulous way to relax, to detox, and just to look and FEEL better. Simply floating effortlessly on the surface of highly salinated water for an hour can have numerous health benefits, but today, we are going to focus on the top three benefits specifically for defying the aging process! 1.) Reduction of Aches and Pains: Being suspended in the salt water solution allows the body to experience absolutely NO pressure from the pull of gravity, which is something we cannot normally escape living on this planet! Also, the Magnesium Sulfates in the body temperature salt water allows the muscles to relax and joints to loosen, giving your body a much needed break from tension, aches, and pains.
2.) Detoxification of the Body: Floating brings the body out of the “fight or flight” state and into the state of “rest and digest.” We can only get to this restorative neurological state by getting the body fully relaxed. The magnesium
allows for this relaxation and the sulfates in the Epsom Salt increase the liver’s ability to produce bile, which transports toxins from the liver to the intestines, where they are eventually removed from the body. The more bile we have flowing, the more effectively we will flush those harmful toxins out of our livers and bodies! Healthy livers = Healthy bodies.
3.) Stress Reduction: The magnesium in the epsom salt does more than just relax muscles: It is often referred to as the “stress elixir,” known to be the most powerful relaxation mineral that exists. With our fast food lifestyle diets, excess alcohol, salt, coffee, sugar, and phosphoric acid (found in soda), the majority of people are deficient in this mineral. We are not getting enough of it in our food and stress burns up this valuable nutrient, necessary for over 300 different functions in our bodies! Magnesium helps us to reduce our stress levels. Without it, we become more anxious, irritable, depressed, restless, and even experience headaches, which adds even more stress. Get more of this “feel good mineral” through the relaxing indulgence of floating!

One last added bonus is that the salt water also conditions your hair and skin, leaving them feeling silky smooth after your float! Floating is a whole body therapy that helps the body in numerous ways. By relieving aches, pains, toxins, and stress, we give the body the space it needs to naturally begin its own healing process, which in turn, turns back the hands of time and improves how we look and feel. Book a float today at Serenity Now Float Spa and experience the natural and unique anti-aging benefits that only floatation therapy can offer. Come on in to get your “Serenity Now”! So what, again, is anti-aging? Equal measures prevention and restoration. This summer is a great time to do both! When we think about anti-aging, we should be thinking about two efforts in tandem. The first ‘anti’ is the preventative effort, and the second ‘anti’ is the fight back after the fact.

Scientists are discovering that longevity is determined by the health of our mitochondria (the engine of every cell) as well as the length of our telomeres (the ends of our chromosomes). “Super-molecules” like NAD+, Glutathione, Alpha-Lipoic-Acid and Silver Hydrosol are given intravenously (IV Nutrient Therapy) in a physicianled, relaxing, spa-like environment for 100% absorption to change the body at a cellular level for maximum therapeutic effect, boosting mitochondrial health and elongating telomeres. The latest discovery holds promise for NAD+ as the elixir of youth. NAD+ levels decrease in our body as we age, and is very unstable orally making supplementation only possible intravenously. NAD+ is mitochondrial energy and increases telomere length, which reverses the aging process for a youthful spark. It is also a neurotransmitter and helps boost the production of other neurotransmitters which makes it an effective nutrient in neurodegenerative states (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s Disease), and brain based issues such as depression, anxiety states, addictive behavior and attentional needs. Glutathione is known as our “master antioxidant” destroying free radicals, recycling and regenerating other antioxidants and allowing effective production of metabolic enzymes. Glutathione helps produce collagen, other proteins and liver enzymes for a robust metabolic boost providing anti-aging benefits inside and out. Glutathione and ALA can be administered alone or boosted to any IV bag! This popular IV push (Glutathione Glow) is known to lighten, tighten and brighten the skin for that youthful glow. Whole Body Cryotherapy sessions have been shown to hack the body in producing helper cells to decrease pain and inflammation slowing the aging process, increase metabolism which promotes mitochondrial health, and boost endorphins for improved brain health and function.

Radiance is proud to introduce Cryoskin 2.0 to the St. Louis community. Cryoskin applies sub-zero temperatures to destroy fat cells in the body, providing non-invasive treatments for fat loss, cellulite removal and lifting and elimination of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. This amazing technology from Paris performs two procedures, CryoSlimming and CryoToning. The CryoSlimming procedure uses thermal shock to heat and then freeze fat cells which causes them to expand and burst. The fat is picked up by our waste (lymphatic) system and excreted over the following two weeks. Instant results are possible! Lose a half inch or more in 28 minutes. After 10 weeks (5-sessions), studies have shown between 38%-45% permanent fat loss. CryoTonning can be done anywhere on the body for a smooth, toned and lifted look. On the legs, cellulite will be destroyed! The wand sends a beam of cold to attract repair cells and collagen to the area and the deep massage breaks up the fibrous bands that cause the unsightly dimpling. A CryoTonning facial provides rescue to fine lines and wrinkles of the face, lifts and brightens the skin for a healthy anti-aging glow. Radiance Float + Wellness seeks to help support the aging process with the latest and safest technologies that can help turn back the clock! Aging Gracefully by Carol Anderson
Nouveau professionals define “Aging Gracefully” as commanding a presence of simple elegance… forever… and ever. The question is how do we defy – on a daily basis – the elements, life changes in our bodies, and time.
Let’s start with the issue of skin. Healthy Skin makes for Beautiful Skin! Skin is the “storyteller” and barometer for what is going on in your body. Healthy, youthful skin is smooth, firm, radiant, and resilient. As we age these signs of youthfulness are compromised both intrinsically and extrinsically. Good health and lifestyle practices such as the food we eat, the way we move, sleep patterns, attitude, and exposure to the elements all affect how we age. We recommend daily skin care regimens – hit and miss habits will produce hit and miss beauty – along with a regular treatment schedule as well. Let a Nouveau professional guide you into healthy, beautiful skin! Strong Bodies are an important part of aging gracefully, and of beautiful skin. Commit to a lifestyle of healthy eating, regular exercise, and positivity, and you
will sleep and live better and revitalize every cell in your body. Cellular renewal activity is what healthy, youthful bodies are based on.
Be simply elegant… forever… and ever.
Be generous at heart! Live in relationship with others giving of your heart, your time, your energy, and your resources! Then be open to receive the gifts of abundance, which will return to you exponentially!

Create clarity of mind and vision! As we think, so shall we be. Create your vision of aging gracefully, place yourself in it, and live it! Ironwomen athletes will tell you the ability to perform well in an event has more to do with mental fortitude than physical, and how one crosses the finish line conforms to the vision. Last but not least, wear your style – really wear it! Style is the expression you give to all of the above qualities. Only you can wear your style.

Skin ages in two ways: Intrinsically and extrinsically. Intrinsic, biologic aging includes factors such as genetics, ethnicity, and overall health state. This type of aging accounts for only 20% or so of the visible aging process, much of which is under your control. So, even if you didn’t inherit a fabulous complexion, great skin has more to do with what you do to it rather than what you’ve been given. On the other hand, extrinsic, environmental aging accounts for a whopping 80% of your appearance and is greatly under your control! This type of aging includes factors such as: • Sunlight • Smoking • Amount of sleep and sleep positions • Diet and dieting • Exercise • Climate • Alcohol • Facial expressions Physician-administered treatments:

Your skin is powerful and, for the most part, can be perfectly capable of healing on its own. But what happens when you interfere with your natural daily healing with both internal and external forces? There is a new anti-aging movement going on called Integrative Esthetics, which has been made popular on the west coast by celebrities. This cuttingedge approach harnesses the already built-in protective measures your skin contains, but with a holistic look at the person. This approach includes emotional wellbeing and social influences, diving deep into the toxins that might be countering the good being done topically. A licensed esthetician practicing Integrative Esthetics not only addresses, with science, what your skin needs, but also how your lifestyle could be hindering any of the results you should be seeing. This interconnectivity allows for a multi-dimensional anti-aging plan to be established. What really sets these facials apart from the norm is applied energy work during the treatment session. By working on blocked energy, created by negative thoughts or experiences, you are allowing stress and baggage to leave the body. This helps the skin’s unique anti-aging responses fully shift into high gear.

I practice Integrative Esthetics in my spa, but you can easily begin this program at home! Start by getting rid of the skin care products that can change hormones, such as endocrine disruptors. Next, review your diet choices. Sometimes it is as easy as looking at the last time your food has seen the sun and deciding if that is good for your body. And lastly, when was the last time you played outside? With three-quarters of U.S. teens and adults having Vitamin D deficiencies*, incorporating more nature into your daily routine is a healthy place to start. Birch Botanical Spa believes that health, wellness and beauty are elegantly linked. Our spa offers the latest skincare services, body treatments and anti-aging therapies with a fusion of western science for proven results. We believe our facials benefit the person as a whole with healing hands, aromatherapy and a relaxing atmosphere to bring out their radiant glow. YOGA&FITNESS
Many of us think of our yoga practices as beginning when we unfurl our mats and take a few intentionally deep breaths before moving into cat–cow. That said, regardless of where we live or what brought us to yoga in the first place, the deeper we delve into our practices, the more evident the importance of ahimsa, or nonviolence – one of yoga’s five yamas, or principles – becomes.
Leveraging Paperless Check-in
Some of us learn to exercise ahimsa in how we treat our bodies on the mat: finally resisting the urge to compete with ourselves or others by pushing too far into a bend or fold, surrendering to the joy of what we’re capable of in the here and now instead. For others, ahimsa is responding to ourselves and others with love and acceptance rather than frustration when we miss a class or workout we had every intention of attending.
Clean and Green
Many yogis in both the East and the West believe genuine yoga is impossible without ahimsa. Some choose to eat lower on the food chain, refraining from consuming meat, which not only spares animals’ lives, but also places less strain on the environment. Ahimsa off the mat can assume many other forms as well. I spoke to Liz Roodman, E-RYT 200 and owner of Sweet Peace Yoga where I practice in Kirkwood, about how her studio is encouraging ahimsa around the clock.
Bidding Plastic Bottles Adieu
Sweet Peace’s Green Choices Inspire Students to Take Yoga off the Mat by Linsey Stevens
Photo by Shauna Nicole - Natural Portrait Photography
“We’ve been rethinking water bottles,” Liz shares. “Sweet Peace is located in a historic house and we thought it was convenient to supply plastic water bottles and set out a recycle bin. However, the percentage of bottles that still make their way into landfills is frightening. Now after some minor plumbing hookups into the existing supply, a water cooler was installed. Yogis can either bring their own insulated aluminum water bottles or buy one of ours.” One of my favorite things about the new water cooler: It’s getting Sweet Peace students out on the studio’s adorable sun porch, which is the perfect segue from encouraging ahimsa to fostering community.
Last December, Sweet Peace traded in its old-school paper sign-in for a wifi-enabled check-in tablet. According to Liz, this reduces the waste of over 25 sheets of paper a week, or 1300 sheets a year. The kiosk makes the most of MINDBODY’s yoga software and check-in is now a playful, interactive process. The thoughtful touches at Sweet Peace aren’t limited to check-in or the sun porch. Need to borrow a yoga mat? Great. You can clean it off with eco-friendly mat spray and a reusable terry cloth after class. Toss the cloth in the miniature wicker laundry hamper and it’ll be clean and back in action in two days. Prefer not to use paper towels in the bathroom? Not a problem: Liz rotates a collection of cotton tea towels for those who prefer to avoid disposable paper products. Sweet Peace also carries mats from JadeYoga, which is run by an ecoconscious former EPA lawyer and plants a tree for every mat sold. Some of my favorite finds for going green and living my yoga practice: Blue Q’s reusable shopping bags, PuraVegan’s sprout lover tacos, and @revelatori affirmations, available 24/7 on Instagram. You can also find me practicing on and off the mat at Sweet Peace and, on certain Saturdays, the meditations at the Pulitzer. She is trained in teaching English as a second language and spent the beginning of her career working with refugees in public education and social service. THE BENEFITS OF MUSCLE BUILDING
Celebrating 25 Years!
by Jessica Phillips
As each one of us age, we lose muscle mass, which is referred to as Sarcopenia, and bone mineral density, which can result in osteoporosis. Our muscles are composed of various muscle fiber types, both slow and fast twitch. If we do not use these muscles they atrophy and limit our ability to function. At The Exercise Coach we are able to design the right intensity program that enables you to recruit both your slow twitch fibers as well as your fast twitch fibers. Because we are able to recruit more muscle fibers during each exercise set, our clients are able to experience more efficient fat loss, cardiovascular vitality, bone health and other improved wellness outcomes. There are many benefits to increasing muscle with resistance training. They include our bodies ability to burn fat, improved insulin sensitivity, which could lead to a reduction of type II Diabetes and an overall improvement of our quality of life. Increased muscle strength can help prevent future injury and meaningful exercise may reduce the likelihood of some diseases. The ideal way to create a better quality of life is to participate in a strength training program that fits your lifestyle, in the right intensity for you and is sensitive to your unique circumstances. Improving your health and wellness is up to you.

Alignment Basics: Vasisthasana (Side Plank)
by Kellie Mathes
DO In addition to improving balance and stability in the entire body, practicing Vasisthasana strengthens the muscles in the arms, wrists, back, core and legs. To begin, start in Plank Pose. Spread the fingers wide and position the wrists under or slightly forward of the shoulders. Squeeze the shoulder blades around the spine. Move the feet so they are touching and pull your leg muscles toward the bones. With the ankles touching, roll to the outer edge of the right foot and reach the left hand and fingers up toward the ceiling. Spread the toes and flex your feet. Draw the belly to the spine, to engage uddiyana bandha. Gaze at your left thumb. Hold for 3-5 cycles of breath and repeat on the left side.
Pro tip #1 – Work Stability & Foundation: Actively engaging the
body, specifically the hands, feet and core, will create balance, lightness and strength in the pose. Spread the fingers
DON’T wide and reach out of the knuckles up toward the ceiling. Pull the belly to the spine. Flex the feet and spread the toes wide. Lift the front hip bones toward the low belly to create space in the lower back and stability in the core.
Pro tip #2 – Create Balanced Action: Press the backs of the knuckles of the right hand into the mat and reach the fingers of the left hand up toward the ceiling – balanced action. Press the big toe mounds of the feet away from the body and reach the crown of the head away from the body in the opposite direction – balanced action.

Finding a Healthy Path to Longevity
by Angie Campbell
At Yoga Source we’re constantly immersed in the study of living our best lives. We focus on repeatable, evidence-based pathways to living this best life with an acknowledgement that there’s always more.. something bigger and unseen. We maintain a sacred space for the purpose of deepening our relationships with Self, with each other, and with the world. We strive to keep our environment real and inclusive, with a foot in the current of science. You’ll find our class schedule holds opportunities for self care, learning, and practicing. Culturally, we need each other. We need meaning and connection to be at the forefront of our practice endeavors. Yoga Source aims to offer a container for community. Experience has taught us that the path of seeking meaning, rather than an outward endeavor of success, leads to true contentment. What is the medicine for our cultural obsession with outward achievement? Yoga – the union of mind, body, and spirit. As it turns out, cultivating a vantage point of radical acceptance of the moment, our circumstance, and all parts of ourselves is a very efficient and productive way to practice. If you’re in it for the asana (the physical practice of yoga), we’re your studio, too! Finding the optimal balance in being and doing is THE pathway to longevity. Our teachers have A LOT of training and experience and a continuing education mindset. We study and teach energetic alignment based systems that

YOGINIS
by Tina Farmer
As we get older, life can seem chaotic and unfocused, but yoga practice can help us find our balance both physically and mentally. Some keys to aging gracefully are breathing deep, being consciously grateful and feeling how connected you are to nature and the other people around you. Practicing gratitude is a big part of these Local Yoginis practice, and it’s a habit that can help you stay more youthful, too.
Emily Wehrman (TOP) STUDIO: Yoga Source
Yoga found Emily several years ago when she was seeking a paradigm shift in her life and her career as a ballroom dancer. She notes that her yoga practice infused its wisdom into her being and credits her daily practice at Yoga Source for providing a safe haven, a continual warm hug and the community she needs. Yoga helped Emily transform her health, her dancing and the way she lives in the world. Ballroom dancing has always shown Emily how powerful love is, but yoga taught her about wielding that power with integrity and balance. Today, Emily manages Yoga Source of St. Louis, teaches and offers Reiki energy healing and takes a holistic embodied approach to ballroom and Latin dance.
MaryAnn Russum (MIDDLE) STUDIO: Various Yoga Studios
MaryAnn has always loved the outdoors. When she found yoga 15 years ago and learned how to combine her practice with her love of the outdoors, she was hooked. Though she practiced at a number of studios in town, she didn’t really fall in love with yoga until she tried yoga at the Grand Basin with her friend and yoga instructor Dianna Lucas. MaryAnn thoroughly enjoys what yoga has done for her mind, body and heart. She’s created great, lasting friendships through her practice and, through intensive workshops with Desirée Rumbaugh, she’s altered
her approach and accomplished poses she never thought possible. A graphic designer and artist who also teaches painting classes at Pinot’s Palette in Webster Groves, MaryAnn is an outdoor enthusiast who loves paddleboard yoga and recently started acro, something she hopes to do much more in the future.
Kim Winn (BOTTOM) STUDIO: Outdoor Yoga
Kim was introduced to yoga by a friend 12 years ago and feels that yoga is such a powerful tool in getting to one’s self that she now teaches and practices at several studios in the St. Louis area, including Practicing Yoga Studio, TruFusionSTL and Yoga Source. Recognizing that life gets complicated, confusing and sometimes almost unbearable, Kim finds that practicing yoga and getting quiet really puts things into perspective. Yoga simplifies life, helping her realize that life doesn’t have to be chaotic and reminding her to enjoy each breath and to be thankful. Grateful for all the beautiful souls she’s met, Kim loves teaching yoga and gets a real thrill seeing the excitement in a student’s face when they do a pose they didn’t think possible. She finds it an honor to play an important role in her students’ lives and to be trusted with personal matters by her students. Surrounded by so much love, Kim gives thanks for her practice and students every day upon waking and every night before going to bed.
MEN

by Tina Farmer
Staying fit and flexible, maintaining strength and learning how to relax are all important tools to keeping youthful no matter your age. They are also cornerstones of yoga. A regular yoga practice can also help you lessen the pains and aches that often come with age. This month’s Men on the Mat use their practice to help them find and maintain healthy balance while building long-lasting strength.
Jayden Almemari (TOP) STUDIO: TruFusion STL Jayden was introduced to yoga in 2013, after a severe leg injury. Shortly after attending his first Hot Yoga class, Jayden started exploring and practicing Ashtanga Yoga. With an attention to deepening his practice, he attended many workshops and finished his teacher training. Now an E-RYT200 yoga instructor with Yoga Alliance and part of the team that brought TruFusion to St. Louis, Jayden appreciates the ways yoga has positively transformed many aspects of his life. In addition to being an instructor, he has a busy career as a Redken Educator helping salons in the St. Louis area grow their business. As a hairstylist standing all day at work, Jayden especially notices the immediate relief his practice provides and he sees changes from his diet to breathing. Still, his favorite part of yoga is the discipline and stillness he finds.
Michael Palumbo (MIDDLE) STUDIO: Yoga Source
Michael was introduced to his yoga practice in 2008, when a friend who had just completed leader teacher training asked if he’d be interested in a private session. He accepted and after a prolonged, legs-up-the-wall final resting pose, he realized he felt something awaken inside him. Since that first session, Michael’s has come to realize that when he’s staying active and taking care of his physical body, everything else
– career, attitude, relationships – falls right into place. A full-time employee at a GSK manufacturing facility downtown, he appreciates the balance and strength of his practice and you can often find him on the mat at Yoga Source.
Martin Caupp (BOTTOM) Sweet Peace Yoga
At first glance, Martin Caupp may not be what comes to mind when you think of a “yogi.” He’s a personal trainer, deer hunter, and Army vet who served in Guantanamo Bay after 9/11, and he reminds us that yogis come from all walks of life. Martin was quickly hooked in 2014, after his friend and teacher Becky Vollmer convinced him to roll out a mat and try a few poses. Martin was immediately drawn in by the promise of bringing back the flexibility he lost by over-focusing on strength training, but his first deliberate breath really changed everything. For Martin, breathing became a tool he used to calm, to quiet, and to connect. He found his twice-weekly Vinyasa practice so physically and spiritually powerful and compelling that he decided to become a teacher. Martin observes that walking down the philosophical path of yoga practice has absolutely changed his life. Today he is ready to share that with others and leads a “guys only” yoga class at Sweet Peace Yoga, bringing him full circle from student to teacher.

Savvy Minerals by Young Living
– a Natural Choice for All Ages by Tina Farmer
Young Living™, the company many trust for pure, aromatherapy oils, has consistently expanded its product line over the years. And Savvy Minerals by Young Living™ makeup is one of the most exciting product developments they’ve had! The line is designed with an unparalleled commitment to purity and quality and produced with products you can feel good about wearing. At Young Living, their philosophy is that women shouldn’t have to sacrifice quality and purity for the sake of beauty. The Savvy Minerals by Young Living™ line was created to provide makeup choices that feel fabulous and have benefits that make them smarter choices. Cristina Campbell, a Young Living representative who was first a customer, is impressed by the way the makeup goes on and stays on. “The new primer is so hydrating, with a matte finish that helps with fine lines, smoothes your skin, and evens tone, giving you a more youthful appearance,” she says. “It goes on easy and stays put, helping to make you look flawless, whether you choose complete coverage, sheer, or a little sparkle.” Enhanced with Young Living essential oils and made with natural, high quality ingredients, the line was released in June 2017, with new products added this June. The complete product line includes lavender-infused mascara and pressed eye shadow, loose powders that can be used in a variety of ways (including as brow filler, eyeshadow, and eyeliner), bright lip gloss, velvety lipsticks, and more. There’s even a bold new shade of red that’s free of potential toxins, perhaps the only red cosmetic that can truly
make that claim. What’s missing? Additives like talc, bismuth, parabens, nanoparticles, synthetic fragrance and colorants, heavy metals, and other potentially harmful ingredients used in leading brands.
But after spending years in medical treatments and still suffering, she tried the Young Livings Starter Kit, with seven essential oils, and almost immediately found relief for her skin problems and painful migraines.
“Many people simply don’t know what’s in their makeup,” Campbell explains. “For example, do you know what nanoparticles are? They’re tiny little plastic beads. Small enough to be absorbed by the skin, but not studied enough to know how they might affect us once they’re in the bloodstream.” Savvy Minerals makeup is also free of heavy metals, which have been shown to have detrimental side effects when absorbed. Like all Young Living products, Savvy Minerals are cruelty free and have never been tested on animals.
As she learned more about the ingredients that helped her, Campbell also began learning about harmful ingredients present in other products she’d been using. She quickly realized that many of the products she’d assumed were safe had harmful, potentially toxic ingredients in them. “If we don’t know that something’s bad for us how do we know to look for something better?” she asks. “It’s all about education.”
Cristina considers herself a teacher and a living example of the positive benefits Young Living essential oils can have for many individuals. “I was looking for ways to supplement my healing process, which felt like it was stuck. I decided I would give essential oils a try,” Campbell recalls. “I was surprised at how quickly my pain and other symptoms were lessened.” Six months after she started using the products, Campbell decided it was time for her to share the benefits she found with others. “I felt a true calling,” Campbell offers. “You can call it spirit or nature, but I found something that works for me and I’m here to share my path to a better lifestyle with other people.” Campbell notes that there are many different approaches to health and what works for one person may not be right for another.
A nationally certified registered aromatherapy professional, Campbell also holds a degree in nutrition. She appreciates that the Savvy Minerals makeup line has no synthetic dyes, colors or fragrances, and that it’s gluten free. Campbell is sensitive to gluten, even in topical products, and that’s the kind of first hand knowledge she brings to her client sessions. “With Savvy Minerals by young Living™ makeup, I feel confident and naturally radiant,” she says with a smile, “and I want to share that feeling with everyone.” To learn more about pure, high-quality Savvy Minerals makeup, visit the website at oillady.vibrantscents.com or email Cristina Campbell at ladyoftheoils@gmail.com.

YOGA 101
What’s YOUR yoga? Everyone’s doing it! Yoga is quickly becoming one of the most popular workout regimens for people looking to gain flexibility and strength, however, don’t discount the mental health benefits. Studies have shown Yoga reduces stress, fosters relaxation and promotes a better sleep. So, what’s YOUR yoga?
Aerial:
Pilates:
Students practice various postures and movements while suspended a few inches off the ground by a long piece of cloth, holding them by the waist.
Consists of low-impact flexibility, muscular strength and endurance movements to promote core strength, stability and muscle control.
Vinyasa:
Kundalini:
Vinyasa means ‘to move with the breath’ and is used to describe different types of classes. Ashtanga and Power Yoga, are taught in vinyasa style - meaning the series of postures flows with the breath. Vinyasa Flow tends to be vigorous and generally starts with a series of poses called Sun Salutations to warm up the body.
An ancient form of yoga that builds vitality. The practice involves postures, with an emphasis on dynamic breathing techniques, meditation, and chanting. Kundalini sequences can be physically demanding and are great for those looking to challenge themselves physically.
Hatha: Classes are slow-paced, and provide a good introduction to the basic postures and principles of yoga.
Performed in a room heated to around 100° F/ 37° C. The heat promotes a deeper flexibility in each pose and sweat helps the body release toxins.
Ashtanga Yoga:
Jivamukti:
Hot Yoga:
Students perform a set series of postures, always in the same order and move from one pose to the next in a continual flow that links movement to breath. It builds strength, flexibility, and stamina, and is often considered to be physically demanding.
Classes offer a vigorous flowing physical practice, and foster intellectual stimulation to lead to spiritual awareness. Classes often focus on a theme, and include breathing techniques, chanting, readings, and eclectic music.
Power:
Bikram:
Based on the flowing style of Ashtanga Yoga, but classes don’t follow the same series of poses. Vigorous classes develop strength and flexibility while keeping students moving.
Iyengar: Known for focusing on alignment, the precise way in which the body should be positioned to obtain the maximum benefits in each pose. Poses are held for a longer amount of time than in other yoga styles to bring the body into alignment.
36 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com |JULY/AUGUST 2018
A series of poses performed in a heated room (usually 105¼ F). It’s physically demanding and will get the heart rate up. Each class is a vigorous 90-minute sequence of 26 postures and two breathing exercises performed in the same order. The heat promotes sweating and is designed to help rid the body of toxins while systematically working every part of the body to maintain optimum health.

SAUTÉED SPINACH with YOGURT and DUKKAH Prep time: 1 hour Cook time: 15 mins Total time: 1 hour 15 mins
INGREDIENTS
½ cup organic low fat yogurt 1½ tsp lemon zest + 1 tsp lemon juice 1-2 tbsp water Salt & pepper 3 tbsp olive oil 20 oz curly leaf spinach, stemmed 1 onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced ¼ cup Dukkah (recipe follows)
INSTRUCTIONS
DUKKAH 1 can chickpeas, rinsed and patted dry 1 tsp olive oil ½ cup shelled pistachios, toasted 1/3 cup black sesame seeds, toasted 2½ tbsp coriander seeds, toasted 1 tbsp cumin seeds, toasted 2 tsp fennel seeds, toasted 1½ tsp pepper 1¼ tsp salt
1. Combine yogurt, lemon zest, lemon juice in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Whisk and add 1 to 2 tbsp of water to achieve more of a dressing consistency (this is optional). 2. Set aside for serving. 3. Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a dutch oven over high heat until shimmering. 4. Add spinach, 1 handful at a time, and cook stirring constantly until wilted. About a minute or two. 5. Transfer spinach to a colander and squeeze to remove excess liquid. Do this until all spinach is cooked. 6. Wipe pot dry. Add remaining 2 tbsp of oil and garlic and cook over medium heat until garlic becomes fragrant. 7. Next add chopped onions and saute until translucent, about 6 minutes. 8. Add spinach and toss to coat with the garlic / onion oil. 9. Remove from heat and salt and pepper to taste. 10. Transfer spinach to a serving platter, drizzle with yogurt and sprinkle with dukkah. Serve
Dukkah: 1. Adjust one rack to middle position and heat oven to 400 degrees. 2. Toss chickpeas w/ oil and spread in a single layer on rimmed baking sheet. 3. Roast until browned and crisp, 40-45 minutes stirring every 5-10 minutes. Cool completely. 4. Process chickpeas in food processor until coarsely ground, about 10 seconds. Transfer to bowl. 5. Pulse pistachios and sesame seeds in food processor until coarsely ground, 15 pulses. 6. Transfer to bowl of chickpeas. 7. Process coriander, cumin and fennel seeds in food processor until finely ground, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to bowl of chickpeas, pistachios and sesame seeds.
RECIPE NOTES: So the lovely team from America’s Test Kitchen decided to bless me with their incredibly delicious (and nutritious) cookbook, Nutritious Delicious, and asked that I cook from it and then GIVE a copy away to one of my blog readers! How could I resist? Anyways, I actually made several recipes from this book but chose to highlight one of my favorites of the bunch, the sauteed spinach and yogurt with dukkah. The recipes in this book are fairly easy to follow so they are great for any level cook. However I DO have some notes in case you’ve never toasted chickpeas before! When you rinse and drain your chickpeas, rub them with paper towels when drying because this will actually remove the outer most layer of the chickpea (basically the translucent skin) which can sometimes trap in moisture when toasting and your chickpea just won’t crisp up as much as they could. I used already shelled and roasted pistachios because that was easiest. I toasted chickpeas as per the instructions and toasted all the seeds in a pan (dry, no oil). Store your leftover dukkah in a sealed container in the fridge so you can reuse it all week! it’s the BEST. I also added a tbsp of water to my yogurt sauce as i wanted it to be more of a dressing than a thicker sauce. This makes it easier for drizzling on. Just make sure you salt and pepper to taste. I also had an onion that I chopped up, because I LOVE when spinach + onion + garlic are paired together, so I so added the onions when I added my garlic and sautéed them at the same time (and increased cooking time until onions were translucent in color).
8. Add pepper and salt and toss until well combined.
I roasted this alongside some carrots and tomatoes, and made some brown rice so this was a main dish (and a filling one).
Nutrition Information: Serves: 4 | Fat: 14.5g | Fiber: 3.9g | Protein: 5.2g
I also think this could be paired very nicely with a juicy red steak, but that’s just me.

Aging: A New Demographic
by Dr. Ed Katcher
The United States life expectancy for combined male and females is 79.68 years. In 1970, life expectancy was 70 years. As more of us are living longer, we are getting better at maintaining our health, but we have room for growth. For the first time we realize that the aging process it not totally predetermined, and we now understand the dynamic relationship between aging and choices that we can control. In addition, our attitude and brain function have much to do with the aging process. We have a lot to say and do about how long we will live and, most importantly, the quality of our lives. Dr. David Eagleman’s book, “The Brain,” points out how important an active cognitive lifestyle is in slowing the aging process. In addition, social context and interacting with friends and family have been shown to have a positive causative effect on slowing the process of aging. To help actively manage your own aging, several researchers, medical doctors, behavioral specialists and demographic specialists suggest creating an action plan to slow the process of decline.
The findings and advice are repetitive, some follow: Physical activity Social context Mental activity Common sense healthy food Stress reducing venues Common sense medicine and alcohol consumption These concepts and more can be put into a personal management plan. Simply develop a calendar and start filling in the activities. Eat well, exercise and spend time with friends and family while keeping that wonderful organ, the brain, active. Dr. Katcher is presently Vice President of ABC Parenting an organization that enhances parenting skills. He is also president of Brave Time Motivation, an organization that helps children reach their potential. Please contact Ed Katcher at: edkatcher@yahoo.com | 636-751-9695

Fighting the
Less Talked About Signs of Aging by Michelle Somers
While more than 1 in 3 women experience the inability to control the bladder, it’s a very personal situation that many ignore or assume is ‘normal.’ It is estimated that 66% of us don’t even discuss it with our physicians.
Only wearing black to the studio or gym because you’re worried about a little thing that 1 in 3 women experience called urinary incontinence? You’re NOT alone! A compromising pose, jogging, a sneeze or laugh and many of us go running to the bathroom, or worse, home to change.
Yoga positions to help improve your pelvic floor:
• Malasana (Garland Pose) (left photo)
• Utkata Konasana (Goddess Pose) (middle photo)
• Utkatasana (Chair Pose) (right photo)
While these poses, when practiced regularly, can aid those suffering from urinary incontinence, they are not enough for many women. That’s when it may be time to consider a
female rejuvenation procedure called FemTouch. FemTouch is an outpatient, minimally invasive, non-surgical, laser vaginal procedure that stimulates new collagen production for healthier tissue. Just like many of the facial collagen stimulating treatments offered at Synergi MedSpa, by triggering collagen production new tissue growth is enabled through this non-hormonal procedure. The new tissue is firmer, making it feel younger and increasing natural moisture. For leakage or incontinence specifically, the procedure helps by tightening and strengthening the tissue around the urethra, meaning less accidents. Overall, FemTouch will increase moisture, create firmness, and even make intercourse more pleasurable. Clients notice improvement after the first treatment, with ideal results achieved following 3 treatments

performed 1 month apart. The procedure is quick, taking less than 15 minutes. We require pelvic rest for just a few days and then clients can return to normal activity. So, if you’ve been avoiding exercise, wearing heavy pads to help contain leaking, or foregoing light colored pants in the fear that they’ll show an accident it may be time for you to visit Synergi MedSpa and explore what other options you have when it comes to feminine rejuvenation and urinary incontinence. Taking a Holistic Approach to Healthcare by Dr. Felicity Keough
Functional medicine looks at a person as a single entity... to provide a personalized remedy and treatment approach The US healthcare system spends more than 80% of its funds on chronic medical conditions with limited success. It’s the biggest healthcare system in the world amounting to more than 3 trillion dollars per year. Although it is providing public healthcare to around 20% of the population, the rest are dependent on health insurance or out-of-pocket expenses. Despite this spending, the US is behind most developed countries. There is undoubtedly something wrong with the current health care approach that pays enormous attention to acute conditions, relieves symptoms, and provides treatment through various specialists trying to cure the disease of each organ. Modern allopathic doctors are viewing patients as someone made of several independent systems. Functional medicine differs from allopathic in the approach it takes. Functional medicine looks at a person as a single entity, and it believes that everything is interconnected. It attempts to find the root cause of the ailment, it analyzes the potential triggers that led to the present condition and pays specific attention to the characteristics of the patient to provide a personalized remedy and treatment approach.
“Functional Medicine is a system. A biology-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness.” – The Functional Medicine Approach, IFM Functional medicine providers each have a specific skill set and can offer a variety of different testing to look at the whole person when providing care. In our office, we strive to get to the root cause of each patient’s specific health issue. Whether that be a pain issue or perhaps a more complex issue such as low energy, brain fog, hormonal issues, low libido, migraines or digestive issues, our office can provide answers to those seeking them. Yes, they do have a lot to do with each other! For starters, let’s debunk this myth: certain things just happen with old age. Fact: there is no normal aging process to the human body! In my office, I could describe two different people to you, show you their x-rays without ever telling you their age, name, or demographic information and could easily lead you to believe you’re picking the older one of the two cases when, in reality, it could be the younger person. Many people I meet have some version of the following three responses almost on auto play when it comes to their health: It’s because I’m getting older, my knee needs to be replaced because of old age and arthritis, my hip has gone bad because I’m ___ years old. My question to every person who thinks that their bad joint, whether it’s a knee, hip, shoulder, or vertebrae, is going bad because of old age, is this: how old is the other knee? How old is the other hip? How old are the other vertebrae in your spine? They’re the same age! So, if ‘old age’ was the cause of the bad joint, the right-orleft-sided mate should be decaying at the same rate, correct??
Insert Chiropractic Care. Biomechanically, chiropractic care does an unparalleled job of balancing our pelvis so we’re putting equal pressure on both hips, knees, and ankles. But, let’s look a step further. Chiropractic care has

It improves the way our body and cells respond to stress and oxidative damage after just the first adjustment. With the right plan of action concerning your spine and health, the degeneration and decay can be halted and even reversed! OsteoStrong helps you live better and healthier at any age by Diane Kline Interview with Laura Harper who, with her husband Johnny Harper, owns OsteoStrong St. Louis and are OsteoStrong Regional Developers in Missouri What made you think about opening an OsteoStrong? It’s a long story, but it started as a way to help my father. I learned that the OsteoStrong system can be beneficial for rehabbing stroke victims and I wanted my dad to start using it right away.
Wow, that’s a powerful reason to start a business. How does it actually work? Think about gymnasts. They have some of the best bone and skeletal health on the planet. Why? Because when they flip through the air and strike the ground, it puts tremendous pressure on their skeletal systems. The “high impact force” triggers new bone and muscle tissue growth, which has a positive effect on many aspects of health. Our system gives the benefits of high impact force, without the risk of injury. Under the supervision of a trained technician, each Spectrum device allows individuals to experience the precise level of force for their musculoskeletal system. And here’s the kicker – you only do one 10-minute session a week. You don’t even break a sweat!
Once a week? Ten minutes? How do you know it really helps? Biofeedback on each machine measures strength gains, and members monitoring their bone density with their doctor often see increases over time. One of the best success stories is the mother of the man who invented this equipment to help with her osteoporosis, she’s in her 80s and has the bone density of a 30 year old! 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures. Knowing we are making a difference in reducing our member’s fracture risk is priceless.
Can’t you get the same results by lifting weights at the gym? The answer is “No!” OsteoStrong’s Skeletal strength conditioning is completely different. Research shows that the minimum amount of
pressure to trigger new hip bone tissue is 4.2 times bodyweight. That’s easily attained with our system, but not with weights. We also trigger “myofibril” growth, which develops the density within muscle cells. The metabolic rate of this change is longer and the structural changes are longer lasting. This is why we see such rapid strength improvement, at all ages.
So, “myofibril growth” helps athletes? Absolutely. Because of the bone and muscle density changes, athletes can improve overall performance, have fewer injuries, and play their sport longer.
Are there going to be more locations in the region? Yes! We have centers open in Creve Coeur, O’Fallon and our most recent opening in Ballwin! Clayton is opening soon, with several more on the way. Okay, I’m all in – how does somebody get started? That’s the easiest part – give us a call and we’ll buy your first two sessions. No obligations. In my opinion, it’s the easiest and most effective thing you’ll do all week. It’s one of the most profound ideas in human physical development in decades.. You just have to try it! www.OsteoStrong.me

What does it mean to be “old”? Do you think of fine lines and wrinkles or maybe something more serious? Maybe you think of your overflowing medicine cabinet, full of pill bottles with your name on them. Maybe you think of the additions to your grocery list, like depends or panty liners. Or, perhaps, instead of thinking of the new things you will need you think of the things you will lose, like mobility and independence. You may even think of the ever-shrinking amount of time you have left with loved ones. Whatever it is that you think of when you think of becoming “old,” it’s likely that age has very little to do with it. When someone says that age is just a number, they couldn’t be closer to the truth. Your health, mobility and independence, and even the amount of life you have left is not determined by your age as much as it is the health of your nervous system. Your nervous system controls and coordinates every other bodily system. This includes but is not limited to your integumentary system, which is your skin and connective tissues, your urinary system, your cardiovascular system, and your muscular system. When a subluxation, which is when one or more bones in the spine becomes misaligned, is present it can greatly reduce the function of the nervous system which then can affect the other systems of the body. This is what ultimately leads to the need for so many medications, or incontinence, or even a shorter life span. However, taking medications or just living with the problem is not correcting the root cause of the issue. By removing the subluxation, you restore function to the nervous system, restoring function to the entire body. Neurologically based chiropractic does just that. It restores the functionality of the nervous system, allowing you to be the healthiest version of yourself. A healthier nervous system means a healthier integumentary system, meaning healthier hair, skin, and nails. It means a healthier urinary system, which means more dry nights and less leaks during the day. It means a healthier cardiovascular system, which means less medications to try to control blood pressure. It even means a healthier muscular system, which means more independence and less fear of falls. When it comes down to it, neurologically based chiropractic care does not only add years to your life, but life to your years. For more information on how to add life to your years through gentle, neurologically based chiropractic care, contact: Dr. John Calhoun | Empower Chiropractic 2951 Dougherty Ferry Rd, Ste 104 | St. Louis, MO 63122 (636)556-0256
Slowing Down
the Aging Clock by Chris Marshall
The 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was given to a group of scientists who discovered and understood how part of our DNA can speed up – or slow down – the aging process. Sounds too good to be true? Telomeres are the strands at the end of our DNA, illustrated in green in the image. They protect the DNA from damage as it replicates. But replication can also cause the telomeres to shorten. An infant is born with longer telomeres. An elderly person has shorter ones. When they shorten completely, as they do with age, our lives are over. Can anything be done? It turns out lifestyle choices can have an impact on telomere shortening. Obesity, psychological stress, UV radiation, smoking, pollution/toxins, disease and oxidative stress can all speed up telomere shortening. On the other hand, meditation, a healthy diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamin D, exercise and use of sunscreen have all been shown to slow the shortening process. Want more protection? Isagenix has a product in some of its supplements that has been proven to increase anti-aging enzymes in double-blind studies at the University of Arizona. The revolutionary supplement, known as Isagenesis, is formulated entirely from plant-based ingredients with antioxidant and neuroprotective qualities. With all the money being spent on medical and surgical approaches to fight aging and improve our health and appearance, wouldn’t it make sense to try a proven nutritional approach? Perhaps this is what Hippocrates foresaw when he wisely stated “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Chris Marshall is an independent associate and coach with Isagenix, the leader in whole-food based meal replacements and supplements. Our anti-aging supplements are based on Nobel prize-winning research and are independently proven support healthy aging. Chris Marshall, 636-328-7147, Chris@IsItRealFood.com

True Sciatica or Imposter? by Beth Maddox
Sciatica is a “garbage can” term often used to refer to any pain that travels down the leg. True sciatica is buttock or leg pain caused by injury to or pressure on the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is comprised of nerves that originate from the lumbar and sacral levels of the spine (the lower back/tailbone regions). This large nerve descends into the buttock and runs under (or sometimes through) the piriformis muscle, passes down the back of the thigh, behind part of the hamstring muscle, and then continues behind the knee and into the calf.

Three things make nerves mad: pressure, tension, and friction. Because of the interesting “geography” of the sciatic nerve, it can experience any or all of these at many points along its path. For example, it can sustain pressure by tight muscles along the spine where it begins. A familiar condition known as “piriformis syndrome” is sciatic nerve pain caused by this muscle compressing the nerve as it passes beneath. Likewise, the hamstring can cause friction in the nerve since it lies beneath this large, strong muscle. Sitting in a chair that is too high for your size can create pressure on the sciatic nerve at the back of the thigh resting and habitually crossing one’s legs can also make this nerve mad; then the very characteristic searing, shooting pain of “true sciatica” begins. There is also “false” sciatica, or symptoms that mimic sciatica. The first class of “fakers” is trigger point referrals from muscles. Unhealthy muscles in the buttock, low-back, and thigh can create pain in the same pathway down the leg as sciatica. Certain ligaments near the sacrum also produce sciatic-like pain in the leg. The third “faker” is the bursas (fluid-filled sacs that act as cushions over bony projections), which also refer their own pain down the leg. Your massage therapist must understand True and False Sciatica. Each false sciatica source and true sciatica require completely different treatment protocols/techniques to remedy this exquisitely painful problem. When choosing a massage therapist, make sure to select one that has the training and experience to get this right! Chiropractic IS Anti-Aging!! by Dr. Brenda Kingen
While many people still believe that chiropractic care is only for people with bad backs or neck pain, modern research is growing about the true value of scientifically specific chiropractic adjustments. This is one reason why millions of children under the age of 15 are adjusted every single week. Throughout chiropractic’s 120year history even infants and toddlers have received adjustments to increase immune function and overall health status. Research is now showing us one more benefit of chiropractic care: Chiropractic adjustments prevent the degenerative progression of aging!
blood thiol levels reduce both aging and the disease processes. The study showed that long-term subjects under chiropractic care demonstrated dramatically higher than average thiol levels than patients with no chiropractic care. This study confirms what chiropractic has been diligently educating the public for over 120 years: rather than resorting to drugs and surgery, chiropractic adjustments positively influence our body chemistry (thiol and countless other hormones) that dramatically regulate optimal body function.
Physical nerve stress occurs when the spinal bones are twisted or thrown out of alignment. This is caused every day by macro traumas such as falls, car accidents, and sporting activities. Micro traumas such as bad posture, repetitive movements, and poor sleeping habits can damage the spine and nervous system as well. Physical nerve stress causes a deficiency in healthy brain-body signaling and an increased release of the stress hormone cortisol. This disrupts the body’s ability to heal. Chiropractic adjustments remove this built-up pressure on the nervous system, allowing the body to heal as it was designed.
Call Kingen Chiropractic today and experience it for yourself... it works!
A landmark collaborative study performed at the University of Lund in Sweden measured levels of thiol, a primary antioxidant responsible for repairing DNA. Thiol levels are a measure of overall human health status and show a direct correlation to our future lifespan and how we are aging. In other words, lower blood thiol levels result in faster aging and increased susceptibility to disease, whereas, increased

What’s in Your Cosmetics? by Dr. Nick Barnes
Consider how many personal products you use daily. They most likely include more toxins than you can imagine, such as shampoo, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, conditioner, lip balm, sunscreen, body lotion, shaving products, and likely, makeup. Your skin is your body’s largest organ and the first protection against many toxic encounters. Among its duties, your skin filters out what should be absorbed and eliminated.
5 Common Toxic Ingredients to Avoid An Environmental Working Group (EWG) survey found people use an average of nine different personal care products every day, with 25 percent of women and one percent of men using 15 or more. Altogether, these products contain some 126 unique ingredients, and we use some (such as lipstick) several times daily. Unfortunately, many of these products contain potentially toxic ingredients that your skin absorbs. “Personal care products are manufactured with 10,500 unique chemical ingredients, some of which are known or suspected carcinogens, toxic to the reproductive system or known to disrupt the endocrine system,” says the EWG. In his book Toxic Beauty, Samuel S. Epstein, MD, says of the 3,000 mostly synthetic chemicals used in fragrances alone, at least 900 have been identified as having some degree of toxicity by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Those type of statistics become especially troubling when you consider a 2009 report found the average woman puts 515 synthetic chemicals on her body every day, and the Organic Consumers Association says that women who use makeup daily can absorb almost five pounds of chemicals into their bodies each year.
Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) find that many people absorb these toxic ingredients in their skin. So, which ingredients are toxic? Here’s a list of a few common ones:
1. Phthalates – In her book Younger, Sara Gottfried, MD, says these are linked to breast cancer and Type 2 diabetes as well as birth defects in male fetuses and early menopause in women. This toxic ingredient is commonly found in nail polishes, hair sprays, aftershave lotions, soaps, shampoos, and fragrances.
2. Parabens – The CDC found widespread exposure to parabens, although they argue measurable amounts don’t imply parabens cause adverse health effects. According to the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, the main concern with parabens in cosmetics is the potential of some to act like hormones (especially estrogens). This toxic ingredient is commonly found in makeup, moisturizers, hair care products, and shaving products.
3. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) – SLS creates foaming or lather in products. “The suds are nice, but not worth the skin irritation, hair loss, and risk of breast cancer and male infertility that come with it,” says Gottfried. The EWG classifies SLS as an environmental toxin with strong evidence that it can irritate skin. This toxic ingredient is commonly found in makeup, toothpaste, hair care products, and beauty creams, among other products.
52 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com |JULY/AUGUST 2018
4. Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP)– TPHP makes nail polish resist chipping. (Gottfried notes it’s also a fire retardant in furniture.) One animal study found TPhP disrupts carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, and DNA damage repair. This toxic ingredient is commonly found in nail polish and nail treatments. 5. Titanium dioxide - According to the California Safe Cosmetics Program (CSCP), titanium dioxide was listed as a potential human carcinogen. They say over 80 percent of all products reported contain titanium dioxide. This toxic ingredient is commonly found in makeup, sunscreens, soaps, and beauty creams, among other products.
7 Ways to Minimize Toxic Beauty Products While potentially damaging ingredients among beauty products can feel incredibly alarming, there’s some hope regarding cosmetics. Consumers are demanding change, and researchers believe the FDA’s outdated regulations might become revised. Some companies have stepped in to address these concerns. Among them is Whole Foods, which restricts 50 ingredients in any personal care product they sell. Likewise, Wal-Mart aims to eliminate eight chemicals (including parabens and formaldehyde) in 90,000 products it stocks. However, researchers argue we need federal legislations, not grocery stores, to call the shots. The FDA needs more authority and resources to regulate cosmetics and personal care products. You can’t totally depend on stores, manufacturers, or government to effectively regulate cosmetics. As consumers, we must become more proactive. Here are some effective ways to avoid toxic beauty products and avoid potentially toxic skincare products:
1. Go organic – Certified organic cosmetics make a less-toxic alternative to conventional cosmetics with skincare ingredients to avoid. Look for products labeled USDA Certified Organic — visit here to learn the USDA’s approved brands. They may be more expensive, but treat cosmetics as you would food products — you would pay more for organic produce, so why not organic cosmetics?
2. Beware of empty marketing terms – Some products boast meaningless terms including “gentle,” “pure,” and “natural” that say nothing about the safety of that product’s ingredients. American sales of “natural” personal care products grew about 7.5 percent in 2014, but we have no legal definitions for such terms.
An integrated approach to healing and wellness. • Diet & Nutrition • Detoxification • Massage • Acupuncture • Chiropractic • Meditation • Trasformational Breathwork • Energy Therapy • Gifts (Health, Spiritual, Eco, Fun)
3. Do it yourself – You’ll find a wealth of online recipes for moisturizers, deodorants, and so much more online that are far less toxic than store-bought personal care products. Making them will save you money and might save your health. Extra-virgin organic coconut oil, for instance, makes a very versatile product for skin, teeth, and more. Researchers found this oil is incredibly well absorbed, moisturizes skin, and benefits a number of skin conditions including atopic dermatitis.
Experience The BioMat at The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit
4. Scrutinize ingredients closely – Remember that ingredients are listed in decreasing order, so that a product will contain more of the first few ingredients. An excellent resource to check specific products is the EWG’s Skin Deep® guide, which provides a wealth of information about popular cosmetics and allows you to check almost 75,000 products.
5. Know that some toxic ingredients aren’t listed – Skincare ingredients to avoid aren’t always listed. An example of this is lead, which Gottfried says is a neurotoxin in lipstick and in dark hair dyes that can damage your cognitive ability. In one study, researchers found this highly toxic metal in cosmetic samples. Pay attention to more than just what the ingredients say; look into the brand’s integrity to avoid toxic beauty products.
Fine Arts, Antiques & Collectibles
6. Demand better – While researchers look for answers, the landscape of personal care products won’t change unless consumers demand it. Manufacturers and makers can only develop what people want to buy, and until that looks like more natural, safer products, we’ll only see more of the same.
7. Ask yourself these two questions – “Drugs and chemicals are well absorbed through your skin,” says Mark Hyman, MD, in The Blood Sugar Solution. “If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.” Can you eat it? Can you pronounce it? With a very few exceptions, if you answer no to both questions, put that product back. Avoiding toxic ingredients in cosmetics requires reading labels, choosing ethical brands, and becoming proactive about what beauty products you put on your skin. Homemade is best, since you know exactly what goes into that product. Second best are organic products from companies you trust. Reducing toxin exposure and all its potential repercussions ultimately goes beyond cosmetics. What you eat and how you live can significantly impact your body’s toxic burden. Common Misconceptions About
Sex & Aging by Molly Eames, M.Ed
“We are our biggest critic when it comes to our bodies; but remember that sex is not just about how we look. Arousal begins the moment we wake up.”
We lose interest in sex as we age: Absolutely false! According to the National Council on Aging survey, among people age 60 and older who have regular sexual intercourse, 74% of men and 70% of women find their sex lives more satisfying than when they were in their 40s. But please keep in mind that while pregnancy is no longer a concern, spreading diseases can still occur. It’s never too late for safer sex practices.
Emotional/Psychological factors are responsible for a woman’s decreased level of desire: Not so much! It is actually the physical factors that play a larger role. Hormonal changes at menopause may affect a women’s sexual response. Lower estrogen levels may lead to vaginal
dryness, which can cause discomfort during sexual intercourse. The good news is that there are many excellent lubricants on the market, depending on your needs.
An aging body is not sexy: Completely false! We are our biggest critic when it comes to our bodies; but remember that sex is not just about how we look. Arousal begins the moment we wake up. It is in the gestures that occur throughout the day by our partners, a witty statement, a sweet text message, a tender caress, a playful kiss that promises more… The point is that we should be proud of our bodies and what they have done for us. Our bodies are beautiful and unique creations! The best way to keep your sex life alive

Summer Survival Tips for Parents by Sheila Hunt Summer means warm weather, splashing in the pool, vacations, and, for many families, long periods of time with children at home. But, don’t panic! It is possible to enjoy the long summer break and use it as an opportunity to strengthen your family, spend quality time together, and re-dedicate your love and commitment to your family. The key to a successful summer break is balancing rest, relaxation, and fun with structure, learning, and productivity.
Here are some activities to help you establish these goals. Family projects. Working together can strengthen the family bond. Sit down as a family and identify projects that need to be done around the house. Be realistic about goals and set tasks that are developmentally appropriate for your children’s ages. Older children can participate in more complex projects involving carpentry, painting, and the use of tools. Younger children can be given tasks such as carrying, sorting, organizing, and choosing colors. Celebrate the completion by having friends or family over for a barbeque.
Create an activity jar. Sooner or later, every parent hears the whine, “I’m bored.” When this happens, you can offer several activities that your children might enjoy while keeping them active and even help Mom around the house! Write the activities on slips of paper, place them in a jar and bring them out when children say they are bored. Ideas for activities can include sidewalk chalk drawing, nature rubbings, crafts, baking cookies, and scavenger hunts.
Family outings. Family outings can be lots of fun and create great childhood memories. Fishing at a favorite local spot, picnics in the park, participating in a charity walk, and camping are some inexpensive outings the entire family can enjoy.
Establish routines. Keep regular meal times, bed times, and time for chores. Maintaining a routine will help children
transition back to school more easily. Plan academic activities to keep minds sharp such as reading books, writing stories, trips to the museum, and summer school, if needed. Build in rewards and make the educational time fun!

Summer camp. Summer camp can help provide structure and additional opportunities for fun, socializing, learning and success. When thinking about summer camp, keep your child’s needs and interests in mind and research the camp’s history and reputation, activities offered, cost, and distance. Outdoor activities. Make sure your children get plenty of outdoor time to play and engage in lots of physical activity. Shooting hoops, playing softball, swimming, playing in the kiddie pool, and just getting out in the fresh air help to keep your children healthy, happy, and strong.
Schedule “Me time.” Don’t forget to schedule time to get out of the house, take a walk alone, visit friends, or go to the salon. Also, don’t feel you have to entertain your children by yourself all the time. Choose a day or afternoon a week where you and your friends alternate providing activities for all the children. On your “off” days you can enjoy some free time to yourself. Y&S HEALTHY PETS
Health & Wellness For Your Dog By Jacqueline Bennett
What REALLY Happens at the Dog Spa? We Investigate! Whether it’s rolling in something stinky in the backyard or frolicking in mud at the park, our furry friends can get dirty and smelly. Sure, you can give them a hose-down at home. But what about a spa day? Getting your dog scrubbed and stylish is easier and more affordable than you think. What exactly is a dog spa? Dog spas are not a novelty—in fact, it’s a $5 billion annual business. The emergence of pet grooming salons in the past decade has spawned everything from shed control to hair color to “pawdicures” and nail painting. We went behind the scenes to find out just what’s on offer and how much it all costs, so you can find something practical and fun to fit your budget.
The Spa Menu A full-service bath is the most common reason to visit a dog spa. Why DIY in the bathtub when your pet can be pampered with a shampoo, blow-dry, nail trim, and ear cleaning? Prices vary by the size of your dog and his coat, but most range from $30 to $80. Haircuts are also a primary reason to visit the groomer. Apart from the practical, salons can get creative with the cuts, making dogs look more like stuffed dolls or other reallife animals. There’s even a Facebook page dedicated to dogs with unique hair styles.
Pampering Your Pet You can take basic grooming and bathing to the next level with additional services. For instance, PETCO offers a number of special add-ons, including: Blueberry facial Paw balm application Teeth brushing Nail “pawlish” Breath refresh These add-ons are pretty affordable, too—pick three for just $22 extra. PETCO also operates about a dozen grooming spas spread across five states.
Best Friends Pet Care also offers some unique amenities, including hair color. They’ve been in the grooming business for nearly 25 years with
53 locations across 30 states, and have seen clients’ needs change in that time.
Global Trend
“We’re starting to get more interesting requests for unique styles and designs,” Vice President of Marketing Adam Wendt says. “Parents want to make their pets look and feel unique, and we’re more than happy to accommodate their requests. We think of ourselves as a full-service salon—you can get anything you want!”
Benefits of Good Grooming
Aside from hair color, Best Friends Pet Care also offers their trademarked “Shedicure” to help keep your dog’s coat in optimal shape and minimize shedding. “Twice a year, their undercoat prepares for the winter and summer and Shedicure helps remove the coat as it’s growing to help the dog breathe easier or insulate,” Wendt explains. “I wouldn’t call it a cure for shedding, but it’s a good way to help with undercoats.” If your dog has a lighter coat and has some discoloring around his mouth or paws, how about a whitening shampoo? “It helps bring back the beautiful white luster in their coat,” Wendt says. Best Friends also offers veterinary services on site, and they think medical care and grooming go hand-in-hand. “We try to take the best veterinary practices and apply them to grooming services,” Wendt says. “We believe health and wellness are central for a happy, healthy pet.” How much is a dog spa visit at Best Friends? Prices for all services vary depending on location, but the main factor in determining price is the size of your dog. Regular full-service haircuts generally vary between $40 and $80. The Shedicure— which is recommended with a full bath—starts at just $10, and nail painting costs $8.

Fancy grooming isn’t just an American trend— the BBC detailed the lengths some pet parents will go to when it comes to pampering their fur babies in a recent special report: Good hygiene and regular grooming doesn’t just make our pets look good, it’s important for their health, too. We already detailed some of the biggest health mistakes pet parents make— and infrequent bathing is one of them! Founder of The Pet Wellness Academy, Dr. Katie Kangas, says the number or times your pet needs bathing will vary depending on breed and activity level, but most dogs need a bath about once a month. “A bath is an underutilized tool for maintaining skin health, especially if your dog has allergies,” Dr. Kangas adds. Medicated shampoos can also help reduce itchiness in an allergic pet—ask your veterinarian if your dog would benefit from a medicated shampoo and bring it along to your salon to use in lieu of their shampoo. Grooming is especially important for dogs with longer coats that can become matted or easily hide foxtails or burrs.
The Bottom Line Getting clean doesn’t have to be all business. With all types of services available in salons across the country, it’s easier than ever to pamper your pooch by treating him to a luxurious spa day. Visit www.Rover.com for more pet tips and advice.

A Woman’s
Professional Journey

Christine Lieber an insurance agency owner, embraces two major philosophies, the power of motherhood and the fact that true greatness must possess some form of art. Today she is a well-respected insurance agent, broker and owner with Shelter Insurance, her journey to this position has been a long one. Christine graduated from Lindbergh high school and today actively gives back to her high school roots with generous scholarships to help cultivate the garden of youthful potential. Her degree in Education is part of her eclectic professional resume. She has created a resume with several paths, including but not limited to, Agency Owner of Christine Lieber Agency LLC, Director of Real Estate Development, Restaurant owner, Regional Sales Manager, Senior Counselor for the cosmetic surgery industry, Sales Representative, Account manager and executive, and Art Teacher. These career journeys coupled with her art degree have led her to becoming a different kind of insurance owner and executive.
To find out more about her professional journey the following questions were asked: There are many insurance agents and brokers, what makes you and your agency different? Most insurance agents and brokers are profit driven. Of course, profit is necessary but it is not the primary goal of myself or my agency. We are client driven making profit an outcome. We seek to develop and maintain an active portfolio on each client so that we can keep a stable network of individuals that see us as life protectors and planners rather than just someone that sells a policy. We individualize, maintain, serve and keep our clients. This makes our insurance packages competitive and because we keep our clients we are fiscally sound. Why do you make it clear that you have not spent your entire career in insurance? I have certainly had a multi-faceted and diversified career which has helped me learn the value of a client based leadership style. Service first is our belief, which makes profit an outcome rather than a sole purpose. My varied career paths have been a journey which has
taken me to where I want to be. Through my teaching of art I learned that any career is more than just a science; client service is an art. You are a very successful professional woman why do you mention your role as a mother? How does that fit into your career? Being a mother for my daughter Priscilla Natalie has taught me humility, tenacity and humbly, the art of parenting. Being a mother is part of who I am as a professional woman. Motherhood is a window into so many realities of life. You have received more awards, honors and certificates than can possibly listed in this writing, how do you feel about that? I am humbled by this question and certainly appreciate the recognition that I have received. In truth, these things are awards which are nice but not as important as the unofficial rewards that one earns through serving clients. In my case that is developing the very best individual insurance package possible.

Y&S TRAVEL
Cheri Keller enjoys a paddle at Canyon Ranch, Lenox Massachusetts
Find Relaxation, Rejuvenation, Happiness and Health on Your Next Vacation People take vacations for many reasons. However, there has been a shift away from travel where people return home feeling like they need a vacation from the vacation to getaways that focus on rejuvenation, health and wellness. To achieve this, some travelers dream of engaging in active experiences such as hiking, cycling or paddling. Others may yearn for a restorative retreat while some may simply want to maintain a healthy lifestyle while they are away.
Adelman Vacation’s Cheri Keller, a travel professional for more than 30 years who has experienced many different types of trips and destinations around the world, has embraced the wellness travel trend. “A healthy lifestyle has always been important to me, so it was a natural progression to become certified by the Travel Institute as a Wellness Specialist concentrating on travel experiences that cater to the mind, body and soul,” Cheri explains. Besides attaining this specialized training, Cheri has personally experienced a variety of wellnessfocused resorts. “Every fall, I take a group on a spa retreat and each time I experience something that changes my life!” Cheri exclaims. She particularly enjoyed visits to the Canyon Ranch properties in Tucson and Lenox, Massachusetts. Each Canyon resort offers beautiful grounds along with an extensive menu of activities and classes, including outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, creative arts,
nutritional counseling and mind-body training. Guests can also take advantage of medical services, spiritual wellness opportunities and spa treatments. Cheri participated in many activities while at Canyon Ranch, including aerial yoga, on-land surfing and canoeing. After a busy day, she often chose to unwind with spa treatments including Ashiatsu, which is a deep barefoot massage. Cheri also immersed herself in the Life in Balance experience at Miraval Resort & Spa, located in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. “As soon as you arrive, you unplug from your cell phone and become more present, aware and connected to your mind, body and spirit.” Cheri had a wealth of interesting activities to pick from, including Body Renewal Rituals, Eastern Modalities and Massage Therapies along with equine experiences, outdoor adventure challenges and a variety of classes, including several types of yoga.
Besides specialized resorts that focus on a complete wellness experience, hotels and cruise lines are introducing their own wellness programs to complement more traditional offerings. Cheri notes, for example, “Seabourn Cruises has teamed with Dr. Andrew Weil, a well-known pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, to provide the firstever wellness program at sea. Mindful Living Coaches will educate and inspire cruisers with special seminars and classes. Cheri will be sailing with Seabourn this fall on a cruise to the Pacific Gold Coast.
Vacations should bring happiness, rejuvenation and peace of mind. A wellness vacation may be just the ticket. For more information on how to find your perfect getaway, contact Cheri Keller at ckeller@adelmantravel.com, by phone (800-749-7116), or visit our website at www.adelmanvacations.com.

Save Time & Money with TotallyTrips By Jennifer Evans
The other day a friend of mine told me that they think they have appendicitis or possibly pancreatitis”. I was naturally alarmed and asked, what did your doctor say? They said they hadn’t been to the doctor yet, then added that they guessed it could also be gas and there was no way to tell for sure. I shook my head and said, that’s what a doctor is for. Just like my friend who wanted to be her own doctor by searching her symptoms online, I run into people who think they are experts in travel because they can search flights online. They say, I saved $25 on my flight! I look at their flight details and don’t have the heart to tell them that they have an 18-hour layover and I could have saved them $100 on a direct flight. My name is Jennifer Evans and I run a full-service travel agency dedicated to providing the best possible vacation experience. At TotallyTrips we have been delivering premium

vacations for over a decade. Why does this make a difference to you? Our staff has over 100 years of experience putting together premium, specially tailored experiences for our guests. We travel to these destinations collecting firsthand knowledge which enables us to make sure you get exactly what you want out of your vacation. Many people are under the impression that booking with a travel agent is more expensive, but that’s not true. The commission that we receive comes from the resorts, not the consumer. And the best part of this experience is that if there are any issues during your trip, you have a name, a number, and a real person to help resolve any issues! So sit back, relax, and we’ll take care of all the work….well except for the packing. 724 Jeffco Blvd., Arnold, MO 63010 636-931-3801 | 877-439-TRIP (8747) Email: jen@totallytrips.com www.totallytrips.com

Y&S INTERVIEW
Be Your Best at Any Age at BTMA Studios An interview with Liam Springer, Co-Owner and CEO of BTMA Studio, about the exercise and movement experiences the studio offers to improve the strength, mobility, and wellbeing of the body.
Y&S: What can you tell us about BTMA Studio? What does BTMA stand for?
Liam: BTMA stands for “be the most
alive” and is based on a concept I studied regarding the ideal state of health in a cell. It’s a state of vitality and energetic balance, allowing the cell to meet all of its encountered challenges without compromising its structural integrity. In short, the cell is the most alive it can be when it is able to deal with challenges it encounters with the least fatigue as a result. This inspired me. I immediately thought “that is the whole idea behind my practice, to help people attain the highest state of living that they possibly can.” The question was what tools could I give them to help attain that state?
Y&S: How do your ELDOA
™
classes at Yoga Source fit into all of that?
Liam: Guy Voyer D.O., the creator
of the ELDOA™ method, and one of my teachers, spent many years studying the body in different aspects, including its biomechanics, anatomy, and physiology. He designed a method of conveying exercises that were both extremely effective and efficient. Each exercise is
designed to make people use their body in a way that benefits their entire body instead of just one part. It helps repair and strengthen your whole being. It’s a powerful revitalizing tool.
on LiamSpringer.com. There you will find information on ELDOA™ and the SomaTraining Paradigm that Guy Voyer invented, and you can also learn how Yoga and ELDOA™ partner so well.

your ELDOA™ classes at Yoga Source? Source because we share a philosophy. The whole vision of Yoga Source is to be very inclusive, to provide opportunities for their members to experience the help they need. Added to that, the owner, Angie Campbell, is amazing. She studied under Guy Voyer as well, so she knew what my practice is all about and how ELDOA™ can be used to help people. Through Yoga Source she introduced the members of her studio to ELDOA™ in a way that others could not. She has been an invaluable partner.
Y&S: It seems like ELDOA
was designed to improve the health of your spine. Is that true? ™
Liam: It would take a long time to
explain all of the benefits of ELDOA™, but one of its most important roles is in the health of the spine. You can find a lot more information by searching for the term, “ELDOA”
