Finding My Way to Optimal Living Everyone has a different definition of success and, therefore, optimal living has a different meaning for everyone. What is yours? As a 24-yearold real estate agent with my photo on the office wall of top agents, an overbooked calendar, and a constant stress knot in my stomach, I felt very successful. I equated success with that feeling of stress and anxiety, but I also had serious health issues and a drinking problem. The work hard, play hard mantra for success was taking its toll. By 25 years old, I was clean and sober but still looking for love in all the wrong places to feel good about myself. I was spiritually disconnected. That realization was the moment when my quest for an inner life began. I embarked on a spiritual journey to find myself. After a journey of 25 years, and many religions, vision quests, gurus, mediums, and intuitives later, my definition of success has changed greatly, and so has my lifestyle. I no longer seek things outside myself to fulfill me. Rather I go inside daily, to connect and allow LIFE to come to me. Of course, I take healthy actions to create my optimal life every day as well. I begin with morning meditation to connect, yoga, journaling, and exercise. My optimal health and life is created one day at a time, with purposeful intention and activity. Asking for support is another key to enhance your life. The more my life expands the more support I need to maintain balance. The resources in Yoga & Spa Magazine make it easy to achieve your optimal health, beauty, and connection. I have found that the more time and attention I give to myself, the more I am able to create in life. Relationships, money, and physical health appear when you build the internal and external support system you need for your optimal life. Once we stop chasing life, it will chase us. Our outside circumstances are always a reflection of our inner life. An optimal inner life will allow your optimal outer living. Finding a new definition of success may be a great place to begin your optimal life.

Gem-Water is a remarkable line of water bottles, gem wands and droplets that turn ordinary tap water into extraordinary H2O — all through the physical properties of the real gemstones and crystals encased within each of the products. After 7-10 minutes in gem-water products, the ‘dead’ water from your tap is transformed. The result is enlivened water with a crystal structure that is comparable to pure spring water. The additional benefits of higher alkalinity and higher oxygenation content have also been proven by an independent lab. Facebook: @GemWaterLover Instagram: @gem_water_lover www.gem-water.com

The Fault in our Farms by Chris Marshall
“I eat all organic,” Susan told me. Michael said “I’m 100% paleo.” These are great choices, and both are taking their health seriously. But things have changed. Our soil is depleted of many of the minerals and nutrients we need for optimal health. If a carrot absorbs minerals and then it’s pulled from the soil, those nutrients aren’t there for the next crop. Organic farms help by cutting chemical pesticides and herbicides… but may not replenish everything the soil needs. The UK Ministry of Agriculture observed a 99% drop in Vitamin A in carrots from 1948 to 1991, and an 80% drop in Vitamin C in apples during the same period. And it’s not just produce: the same study showed a 54% drop in iron and a 41% drop in calcium in meat. Scientific American puts it this way: “Modern intensive agricultural methods have stripped increasing amounts of nutrients from the soil in which the food we eat grows. Sadly, each successive generation of fast-growing, pest-resistant carrot is truly less good for you than the one before.” Simply put, it’s harder and harder to find nutrient-dense food, organic or otherwise. Many of us walk around in a starvation/deprivation mode much of the

time. We crave things because our bodies are never satisfied. When we choose to diet, we often resort to eating less of the food that’s already depleted. This deprives our bodies even more. Many diets fail, or we return to our original weight, because we simply can’t go without essential nutrients. To strengthen our bodies, build lean muscle, or lose weight, we need nutrient-dense food… not empty calories! Chris Marshall is an independent associate and coach with Isagenix, a company that’s been providing clean, nutrient-dense food nationwide since 2002.

Spring Into Your Summer Skin!
Living in the Midwest we necessarily hunker down for the winter, covering up during colder weather. But with the advent of spring, we transition to lighter clothes, less cover and, for many of us, we start thinking about our own renewal. Spring soon leads to summer, which means tank tops, spaghetti straps, and bathing suits. In just a matter of weeks, we will all be more visible. As we ponder our upcoming increased exposure, we may view our bodies more critically than at other times of the year and wonder what, if anything, can be done before summer to address concerns that emerge as we look in the mirror. There are many options including procedures with minimal or no down time, such as Botox and fillers, and others that are more involved but with significantly less downtime compared to more invasive procedures. As one of the least expensive, fastest, and quickly gratifying procedures in the cosmetic arsenal, Botox is an ideal way to reduce moderate wrinkles and can help us start summer with a more relaxed, calmer look. Similarly, by compensating for age-related volume loss, fillers are an excellent choice to help return facial contours to a more youthful and balanced appearance at a moderate cost, with minimal recovery time.
With several weeks still ahead of us before summer, we can also contemplate more involved procedures that require one or more days of downtime but can lead to very significant improvement with lasting benefit greater than the simpler procedures above. For example, if we have an emerging or persistent double chin, or if we want to start the season of renewal with stronger rejuvenation of the face, neck or dÊcolletage, then subdermal and/or ablative laser treatments are good options. In addition to pursuing any of the above single treatment strategies, we can also employ these treatments in various combinations tailored to individual specific goals and budgets. Of course, no discussion about cosmetic treatment strategies is complete without considering how we can help reduce the impact of those external factors that lead to many of the skin issues we are trying to mitigate. The most important and cost-effective skin care effort of all is to prevent as much future damage as possible. The sun’s rays are growing strong now and will continue becoming stronger for weeks to come, which means it’s time to purchase new sunscreen. And even if we have no need for, or intention of doing, any cosmetic procedure, we should still consider using
By Joseph A. Muccini, MD
simple topical products that can help to moderate some of the signs of prior photo-aging as well as help stave off future damage. These products include both simple moisturizers to help the skin stay hydrated during increased summer exposure as well as more expensive highend items such as vitamin C serum and/ or retinoid products available in various strengths, depending on individual needs. As with all things, an ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure! Dr. Joseph A. Muccini is a Harvardand Columbia-trained, board-certified dermatologist with more than 20 years of experience in medical and surgical dermatology. Spring Into Wellness
When seeking optimal health, all systems are on the path to integrate and achieve balance to function synergistically together. These systems include the health status of ones mental, physical, and social needs. For each individual, until that balance is achieved different systems may need more or less attention at any given time. Owned and operated by 2 psychiatrists, Radiance Float + Wellness has multiple services designed to promote mental wellbeing. Although we all know the damaging effects of stress, it is not common knowledge on how to mitigate these effects. Float therapy is gaining popularity for that and also has scientific research and proof of effectiveness. A recent study conducted by Dr. Justin Feinstein and the Laureate Institute for Brain Research, showed positive, statistically significant results in people with diagnosed anxiety and depressive disorders. Floating eliminates sensory input and with this brief interval of “nothingness can provide enormous healing potential to the body and brain.
Physical health is maintained and promoted with consistent lifestyle habits such as proper attention to nutrition, exercise and recovery. The absorption of nutrients is key! Studies have found the absorption of orally consumed foods and supplements to only be about 2040%. At Radiance Float + Wellness, we offer IV Nutrient Therapy that provides 100% absorption of vital nutrients directly into the blood to be able to travel to all parts of the body. Exercise improves circulation and supplies oxygen to our cells and is important for optimal health. Equally as important to exercise is recovery. We are able to train harder and gain better results when we add recovery into our exercise regime. At Radiance Float + Wellness we also offer several services that provide the needed recovery for muscles, joints, bones and the mind such as Cryotherapy, Float Therapy, Hydromassage and our Infrared Sauna.
Seeking optimal health with consistent lifestyle changes is an enjoyable journey. We encourage anyone who is on this path to visit Radiance Float + Wellness for safe, natural and effective treatments that can help people achieve their wellness goals. Detoxify and Destress with Serenity Now Float Spa
Let’s face it, we live in a toxic world. There are more than 80,000 chemicals in the U.S. and about 800 are identified as endocrine disruptors (chemicals that interfere with the body’s hormone systems). These chemicals can cause birth defects and cancers, thyroid dysfunction, and insulin resistance… the list goes on and on. So, it is no surprise that we need to rid our bodies of these chemicals as well as reduce our exposure to them to be healthier. “There is no doubt that autoimmune diseases are on the rise and our increasing environmental exposure to toxins and chemicals is fueling the risk. The research is sound. The conclusions unassailable,” Dr. Douglas Kerr, M.D., PhD, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, has concluded.
Our bodies can get rid of these toxins through urine, feces, exhalation, and sweat. The skin is our largest organ and it works together with the lymphatic system to detoxify our bodies straight through the pores, by sweating. Detoxing gets right to the core of a dysfunctional, overly toxic system by restoring balance, functionality, and vitality to the body. Utilizing an infrared sauna in one treatment has been shown to be an incredibly effective way to remove toxins from the body. At Serenity Now Float Spa, we offer a Detox package that begins with sound wave vibration therapy to effectively flush the lymphatic system at ultrasonic speeds. Then, our guests go into the Infrared Sauna where the toxins are released through a deep sweat, eliminating those unwanted chemicals through the pores of the skin. Lastly,

Defy Your Age Maintain Radiance with the Latest, Best & Most Popular Wrinkle Treatments
Your face expresses your complete range of emotions — pleasure, laughter, and sorrow, along with focus. As we age we prefer that our faces display our more lighthearted sentiments. Fortunately, a variety of popular, nonsurgical treatment options that target specific expression areas can help defy your age and maintain your youthful glow. Key to achieving your best appearance is the right treatment at the right stage for your skin type, lifestyle, medical history, and goals. It’s best to start treatment when expression lines remain visible in a “rested” expression. Among the best treatments are Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin®, popular neuromodulators that are injected into the skin to produce targeted, visible results in as little as 2 days. BOTOX®, the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment, temporarily reduces the repeated muscle contractions that form vertical creases between the eyes, crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, horizontal forehead lines, and sagging corners of the mouth. The effects gradually lessen, so retreatment every 3 to 6 months often yields the best results.
Dysport® helps lessen the appearance of moderate to severe furrows between the eyes. Five points along and between the eyebrows are treated to prevent muscles from causing frown lines. Improvement is often visible within 2 to 3 days. The effects last up to 4 months. Xeomin®, the newest treatment, is typically used to treat frown lines and crow’s feet, horizontal forehead lines, and to lift eyebrows up to 3 millimeters. Results may be seen as early as 3 to 5 days. Xeomin® may produce longer-lasting results when used over time. Complementary to BOTOX®, Dysport® and Xeomin®, are injectable dermal fillers such as Juvéderm®, Restylane® and Radiesse®, that can be used to help smooth wrinkles, plump the skin, and re-contour or volumize specific areas of the face, such as the cheeks, lips, chin, and around the eyes. In addition, non-invasive cosmetic procedures help achieve a more youthful appearance. Microdermabrasion reveals more radiant skin while promoting growth of healthy new skin on the face, neck, chest, and hands. Chemical peels reduce
the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, even skin tone, and reduce blemishes and dermaplaning gently removes dull, dead skin cells and fine hairs, revealing brighter skin and smoother makeup applications. Make sure you’ll receive the right treatment for achieving your goals while maintaining a natural look by choosing a clinic operated by a boardcertified dermatologist. Certified medical professionals are experts in skin biology and mature skin and ensure patient safety is top priority. Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center is the premier center for cosmetic dermatology, laser skin treatments, and Mohs surgery in the St. Louis area. The clinic was opened by board-certified dermatologist George J. Hruza in 1999, after 11 years teaching dermatological surgery. YOGA
& FITNESS
Sharing the Benefits of Yoga One Location at a Time
In September of 2003, I was a Fitness Instructor and Fitness Attendant at The Center in Rolla, Missouri. The director suggested that I be trained and certified as a YogaFit yoga instructor. Living in a small town in rural Missouri at the time, yoga was still new to the fitness industry – and to me! I was apprehensive, but I wanted to impress my director and agreed to the training in Kansas City, although I was very nervous. I played “cool as a cat” on the outside, but inside I was thinking, “I can’t sit still and breathe while holding these yoga poses!” The surprise was that I completely fell in love with yoga and all that it had to offer. Shortly after my training, I was offered a chance to teach a yoga class for older adults. It turned out to be my most memorable yoga teaching experience, and I gained a passion for older adult fitness classes, especially yoga classes. Shaped by that experience, I have consistently sought out opportunities to teach older adults. Since that first certification with YogaFit, I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education K-12, a Master’s Degree in Education, Yoga Alliance RYT 500 Hrs, and Senior Yoga RYT. I am grateful for the opportunity for
all my training, education, and experience, but the Senior RYT training was the dearest to my heart. In my training I learned that yoga can improve the lives of people of all ages in a variety of ways. These include reducing stress, anxiety and depression, reducing the risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and cancer, as well speeding up recovery from various medical procedures. The health benefits of yoga are no different for older adults. As we mature, our muscles are inclined to stiffen, joints lose their range of motion, and chronic problems such as osteoporosis and arthritis can develop.
Yoga can help reduce the effects of the aging process by: • Keeping muscles and joints strong, yet flexible for optimum mobility • Improving balance and stability, which reduces fall risks • Improving cardiovascular health • Improving sleep quality • Lowering blood pressure and cholesterol

Fit into your jeans AND feel better! Diet and exercise improve overall health. My clients usually come to me to lose weight but end up noticing other perks along the way - less headaches, more energy, clearer skin, improved blood pressure. We usually think about diet and exercise as ways to help us fit into our jeans (don’t get me wrong - that’s great!), but they both help improve our overall health.
Check out these three major health benefits: Fight inflammation: Chronic inflammation can lead to disease, weight gain and joint pain. Diet can either contribute to or help curb inflammation. Everyone has different food sensitivities, but common culprits include sugar (huge!), refined carbohydrates, and dairy. Slashing our intake of these foods
can help you lower the inflammatory response in your body, which will help you feel better now AND later.
Do something today that your body will thank you for tomorrow!
Manage stress: Stress takes a toll mentally and physically. We’re talking headaches, weight gain, insomnia, increased blood pressure, stomach aches… ugh.

Getting a regular sweat in can reduce stress. I always tell my classes, “Feel the energy leaving your body!” We need to get those feelings out! Plus taking time away from whatever is causing stress helps you get a new perspective - and that’s always healthy. Increased energy: Food is meant to be fuel, so when you’re putting nourishing meals into your body, you’re going to notice an increase in energy. Exercise will also give you more energy - yes you read that right!

7 Hormones Preventing You From Losing Weight
For women, especially over 35 years old, weight loss and maintenance is often an ongoing battle. It can be confusing determining what is best with all the options out there for weight loss. The reality is that all of them (low carb, low fat, no sugar, portion control, exercise) will enable you to lose weight. What most women struggle with is keeping that weight off. Let’s face it, yo-yo dieting can be frustrating, costly on your closet and just downright exhausting. At Complete Fitness, we offer a program that not only focuses on healthy eating choices, but also on another key component: balanced hormones. We educate our members during our 20 pounds/30 days Fast Track Program about the hormones that hold them back, and guide them through the process of resetting that delicate balance so their

bodies become efficient at losing body fat. Once we reach the ideal hormonal balance, we begin to customize each member’s personal eating plan through the Listen to Your Body program. Imagine what it could be like to know exactly what foods help your body to lose weight and keep it off!

For her, yoga is much more than a practice that is at times physical, at times mental, it helps us cultivate unity within our selves so we can move, speak, and act from our own true self. Currently working at 1st Phorm, Lauren believes that once you fully cultivate self-love you can extend it through your actions, your words, and your deeds.

MEN MAT on the
by Tina Farmer
In addition to the desire to get outdoors and be more active, spring brings a host of pollens, swiftly changing temperatures, and sudden storms to challenge our immunity and wellbeing. This month’s Men on the Mat appreciate the sense of inner and outer strength that their practice provides. They also recognize the impact yoga can have on achieving their optimal health.
Studio: Yoga Six, St. Louis Michael G’Sell (TOP)
Tri athlete Michael G’Sell has only been practicing yoga for just over a year but feels confident it’s a practice he’ll continue for many years to come. His friend Debby introduced him to yoga after hearing him complain of knee and hip pain one too many times. She showed him a few things he could do to stretch his hip and knee and then suggested he join her at a Yoga Six class. The rest is history, as they say. Michael quickly felt both physical and mental benefits from his practice, and he appreciates that yoga has allowed him to gain more mindfulness, whether competing or in the midst of everyday life. As a member of Team USA with the goal of competing in the Olympics one day, Michael has transformed himself over the past three years, losing more than 70lbs and adopting a healthier lifestyle. He is currently training to compete in the World Championships in Australia this coming September and says he really didn’t notice all the benefits of yoga until he started competing more seriously. A student and model in addition to triathlete, Michael primarily practices at Yoga Six, but he welcomes the opportunity to meet other practitioners and health enthusiasts.
OmTurtleYoga Bill Harrison (MIDDLE)
Like many, Bill Harrison decided to try yoga to improve his flexibility. He began attending yoga regularly and soon discovered that it relieved muscle soreness, improved his breathing, corrected his posted and increased his physical strength. All of those improvements are also needed for
his other passion, scuba diving. An avid diver, Bill travels all over sharing his love for diving and yoga, and even combining the two when he gets the opportunity. Bill is an instructor at OmTurtleYoga in Ferguson, teaching Kettlebell and Gravity Yoga, and a Master Diver Trainer capable of certifying people as a PADI Yoga Diver. Yoga and Diving? Yep, it’s possible. And it just goes to show that the benefits of yoga will often manifest in surprising ways.
Shanti Yoga Andrew Koch (BOTTOM)
About three years ago, Andrew Koch was looking for something he could do to relieve stress and improve his mental health, so he decided to try yoga. He was initially quite nervous before his first class, because he had no idea what he was getting into, but the class gave him such a great feeling that he didn’t want it to end. All that nervousness went away with the first class and, since that time, he’s noticed many other benefits from his practice. Andrew notes that practicing yoga has increased his confidence to do things that might feel uncomfortable or difficult, both on and off the mat. He’s starting to do more challenging poses and he’s better able to handle stressful situations in life more efficiently. Andrew’s mind has been clearer, his flexibility has improved greatly, and he’s doing things that he couldn’t have done a year ago. As a business analyst with a love for being outdoors hiking, running, and biking Andrew appreciates the clarity of mind and ability to focus that he’s learned from yoga.
TRUFUSION Breaks Down the Barriers – Helping You Reach Your Health and Fitness Goals
TruFusion is a new yoga and fitness destination offering unlimited access to more than 65 class styles in traditional and heated temperature rooms. Located in Clayton, TruFusion will offer up to 240 classes per week for people at every level of fitness from beginner to advanced. The variety of fitness choices is tremendous and includes yoga, Pilates, spinning, bootcamp, barre, boxing, kettlebell, battle ropes, and more – all under one roof.
Overcoming the many everyday hurdles to achieving your health and fitness goals can be a challenge for anyone. Barriers can stand in the way even for those who genuinely appreciate the benefits of health and wellness. Boredom, lack of motivation, and cost are just a few of the barriers you may face. But St. Louis is getting a solution – even before the coasts – that crushes those obstacles. TrueFusion is experiencing explosive growth, with new locations planned for California, Florida, and New York, but not before the fitness franchise opens in St. Louis. The studio has quickly become a popular destination for celebrities. “You know it’s a special place when celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez walk into a studio and take classes with 50 other people,” said Joe Goldberg, owner of TruFusion STL. The World Series champion and 14-time All-Star joined the company after he and Lopez, his girlfriend, were introduced to the workouts.
“TruFusion takes a truly ‘one size fits one’ approach, and members have the opportunity to customize a schedule that works for their needs,” Amy Lescher, TruFusion’s director of fitness, explains. “With a focus on safety and total health, our talented instructors help beginners start their journey while offering our more advanced members the challenge they’re seeking.”
There is a social and emotional aspect of fitness that comes with group exercise, something that doesn’t exist when you’re staring down a row of treadmills and ellipticals at a standard gym. “We’re building a community that “We’re building a people want to be a part of, where everyone is community that people connected by a shared desire to be happier and healthier versions of themselves,” Goldberg want to be a part of, where adds. “We make creating a welcoming culture everyone is connected by a that is full of encouragement and support for members at all levels of their wellness journey shared desire to be happier a priority. TruFusion becomes an integral part and healthier versions of of your lifestyle instead of a task on a to-do list.”
themselves...”
“Our bodies – even the bodies of top athletes and performers – plateau when we do the same workout over and over again,” Goldberg notes. “The body demands muscle confusion to remain challenged and our minds crave variety to sustain motivation. I noticed that people were driving to different fitness classes around town to get the well-rounded workout they needed, and I knew there had to be a better way. TruFusion was designed to combat boredom.” The company’s name references a commitment to being true to the principles of health, wellness, and whole-body fitness by fusing multiple modalities together. Understanding that every individual’s goals are unique, the ‘Find Your Edge’ tagline speaks to helping members find their personal edge by reaching their goals, whatever they might be.
An additional perk is the in-house café, Revel Kitchen, which will serve as a gathering place for those who are looking to socialize. Members with a time crunch can also order food in advance and have it ready after class, a convenience that’s a healthier option than fast food. Other extras include personal trainers on staff, on-site massage and childcare making this facility an incredibly convenient wellness destination. “My hope,” Goldberg continues, “is that by combining healthy foods and a supportive community with top-notch fitness classes at an affordable cost, we’ll make wellness more accessible to a larger percentage of our community.” With multiple class times, accessibility, and lots of variety, TruFusion is helping to remove the barriers that many face during their wellness journey.

Alignment Basics: Ustrasana (Camel Pose) To begin, from a kneeling position, set your knees and feet hip-width distance apart. Stack your shoulders over your hips and your hips over your knees. Press the tops of your feet into the mat. Place your hands at your low back with fingertips pointing down and palms pressing toward your back. Set your eye gaze forward. Take a deep breath in and lift your chest and eye gaze up toward the ceiling and pull your shoulders back and around your spine. As you exhale, drop your head back and walk your eye gaze across the ceiling and behind you. With hips pressing forward, reach one hand toward the heel and then the other. To go deeper into the pose, with each inhale, lift the chest higher to lengthen the spine and push the hips more forward. Walk your eye gaze from the ceiling, to the wall behind you and eventually to the floor, creating a deep back bend. The goal is to lengthen and create space on the front-side of the body while creating an arch in the spine.
Modifications Tuck your toes under your feet to make your heels more accessible when reaching your hands toward your feet. Keep your eye gaze forward if dropping your head back is uncomfortable.
Some common misalignments and how to avoid them The most common misalignment in Ustrasana takes places when practitioners focus more on reaching the heels rather than keeping the front of the body long while arching the back. Compression in the low back occurs instead of a deep arch in the spine. Arching and bending the back is healing to the spine and compression is not. Avoid the lean back by lifting your chest up before looking back.

Awards & Rewards
During my tenure on this planet I have earned four university degrees, one of which is a doctorate, and hold five life time teaching certificates: the documents proving such are packed away in some box someplace. In addition, to keep these documents company are several plaques, awards and certificates safely packed away someplace. Some of these things we can categorize as accomplishments, most of which were necessary for the career positions for which I sought. With that said the reality, harshly learned, is that rewards are much more important than awards. Years ago, I was a high school principal in Mexico, Missouri. Some of my students were pretty rough. One girl, Anita lived in infamy having terrorized most of her fellow students and faculty with fighting, biting, hitting and cussing. Anita was a one girl war, a living fire breathing disturbance. Of course, being the head disciplinarian our paths would cross on the worst of terms, punishment. Upon meeting her, I immediately liked my most difficult student. Using corrective action rather than punitive venues I tried to guide and help this poor tormented child. Through all the cursing, violence and disruption we established a relationship. In time,Anita became a productive student. I humbly submit that I was a small part of her transformation. I was offered another position which meant that I would be leaving Mexico High School. At the end of the school year, with less than a month remaining Anita came to see me, she had a present. She had hand crafted an atrocious, monstrosity of a lamp. She had purchased a cheap plastic bust of, “Mr. T,” the actor, and converted it into a lamp. It was one of the ugliest things I have ever seen. However, the gift was made with loving care. It was not an award it was a reward. I proudly placed it on my desk and kept it there until my departure. It was one of the best rewards I ever received. Strength & Integrity By Marsha Yost Bradford
Optimal is an ever-changing, fluid idea. It ties into notions of the best, highest, most refined. And when we pair ‘optimal’ with ‘health,’ it carries even greater import and force. On the one hand, optimal health is a notion filled with aspirational overtones, a beacon of promise, and an avenue that leads to the fulfillment of the good life. But in the same breath, it can be a frustrating, elusive goal, one that shifts with changing life circumstances and is accompanied by inevitable compromises. But this is actually the secret to optimal health—a balance of aspiration and frustration. By moving between these poles, getting a grip, and learning to hold them both at once, we create a powerful bond between these opposing energies, creating a circuit of strength and integrity that helps us engage the various portions of our growing selves. Dimensions of body, dimensions of mind, dimensions of spirit—optimal health finds itself when all of these dimensions are nourished and engaged.

A Ready Made Solution to Healthy, Flavorful Eating
• Diet & Nutrition • Detoxification • Massage • Acupuncture • Chiropractic • Meditation • Trasformational Breathwork • Energy Therapy • Gifts (Health, Spiritual, Eco, Fun)
By Hayley Sohn
I could hear the frustration in her voice and instantly I knew she was a chronic dieter. “I am so sick of dieting,” she told me after a few minutes of questions. “I eat salads all day, but I am still struggling with weight.” It wasn’t the first time I’d heard it.
Experience The BioMat at The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit
Most chronic dieters experience: • Hunger • Feelings of deprivation • Fatigue • Food boredom • Burnout • Binges • Weight gain All of these are difficult to deal with on their own, but to experience them together coupled with weight gain can be maddening. Strict diets lead to boredom, burnout and rebellion and we end up binging on all the foods we weren’t “allowed” to have. Motivation quickly wanes when our taste buds aren’t satisfied. So, I offered her an alternative. “What if instead of dieting, you consistently ate real food – home cooked meals – that are delicious and health conscious?” Basically It Ready Made Meals are nutritionally balanced with whole plant foods, lean proteins and healthy fats with a home cooked taste. Balanced meals allow your body to reset; you feel satisfied on fewer calories. After three weeks eating Basically It Ready Made Meals, she checked in with an update: “I’m eating more food, I have more energy, and the weight is coming off!” She was no longer dieting; she had control over her appetite, and even more free time! She was no longer spending time in the kitchen or researching the next weight loss fad. She was simply receiving fresh, healthy, delicious, and fully cooked meals each week and watching the pounds fall off. I have seen so many women go through this vicious cycle, but once they begin honoring their taste for delicious food and letting go of the temporary diet mentality, they are able to lose the weight – and keep it off. Does this resonate with you? I invite you to have a conversation with me about your health, nutrition and weight journey for free! I specialize in helping women break free from the kitchen and their diets. For more information, email BasicallyItRMM@gmail.com or call 314-750-2991.

What’s Mindfulness Got To Do with Sex?
Molly Eames, M.Ed, National Certified Counselor Sexuality Therapist and Educator
Sexuality is an essential part of who we are, and it is an energy source that stays with us in every interaction that we have. It’s not just about who we love or the activities that we prefer to engage in; it also includes how we communicate, how we feel about ourselves, and how we understand the importance of healthy relationships. And yet sexual health or dysfunction is not a subject that is frequently discussed, even with our closest friends. Many find the topic to be embarrassing or too personal to share with others. Often, when we cannot share our experience with someone, it leaves us feeling alone and filled with shame. However, sexual health issues, which encompass our physical, emotional, mental, and social sense of wellbeing, are more prevalent than we realize. Symptoms of sexual dysfunction frequently show up as anxiety, experiencing pain, low libido, or depression. Sexual health changes across the lifespan and the issues that arise are varied. Mindfulness is the practice of actively paying attention to the present moment and observing our thoughts and feelings in a non-judgemental way. This allows us to not be controlled by our negative thoughts or emotions, but to be able to experience the current moment. Mindfulness is a tool that we can use to help understand our bodies, emotions, and thought patterns. When practiced regularly, it can help alleviate stress, self-judgement, pain, anxiety, and depression.
Mindfulness is an empowering tool that we can use to feel more satisfied with our selves, improve our sexual health, and direct our attention to connection instead of performance.
Holistic Healing, Genuine Listening Real Growth Using holistic and strength based methods, we will discover your strengths, bring awareness to the mind-body connection, and empower you to make healthier decisions.

Diabetic Neuropathy
Sufferers Significantly Misled By Dr. Chris Heeb, DC
“The microcirculation in diabetic and neuropathic feet is subject to the same changes found in other end organs of diabetic patients, such as the retina or the kidney. Complications such as foot ulceration lead to further morbidity and hospitalizations. Research into the causes of microcirculatory dysfunction has revealed an interplay of numerous factors. The most prominent findings are impaired endothelium-dependent and -independent vasodilation and reduced or absent nerve-axon reflexrelated vasodilation. This renders the diabetic foot unable to mount a vasodilatory response under conditions of stress, such as injury, and makes it functionally ischemic even in the presence of satisfactory blood flow under normal conditions.” (Diabetic neuropathy and microcirculation. Hile C1, Veves A. Curr Diab Rep. 2003 Dec;3(6): 446-51). Did you know that small blood vessels (also known as microvessels) contribute to fundamental physiological processes and pathological events such as above, but have not garnered the attention associated with big arteries and veins, and how they relate to diabetes and neuropathy? Did you know that blood is the body’s universal means of transport? Oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and immune cells are all transported through our blood. As our cells receive these raw materials, our body is able to maximize optimum cellular health and accelerate metabolic waste removal. Every single living cell in your body needs a consistent supply of oxygen and nutrition. Research has shown that enhanced blood flow (in
the microvessels) through vasomotion (i.e., vasodilation) is the main road to optimum health and the main component to alieving the symptoms associated with diabetes and neuropathy. Over 74% of the blood vessels in our bodies are comprised of microvessels and only 26% are arteries and veins. Microcirculation is so important to avoid the onset of cellular dysfunction, which ultimately leads to tissue or organ dysfunction where we observe symptoms of diseases. That’s where the issue presents itself with people who suffer from diabetes and neuropathyrelated issues. Here’s the bad news: the process of microcirculation deteriorates over time. Your heart beats about 50 to 70 times a minute which is pretty consistent most of your life. Now, your heart may work a little harder as we get older, but imagine if your heart beat 60 times a minute in your 20s, 40 times a minute in your 40s, but only 20 times a minute in your 60s and beyond. How do you think you would feel? Horrible. And, you think you’re tired now… imagine how tired you would be then. You could live, believe it or not, but your overall function would be significantly diminished. This secondary process, the vasomotic process, reduces its efficiency by up to 20% over 25 to 35 years. Therefore, this process of delivering oxygen and nutrition as well as waste disposal is not working as efficiently as when you were younger. As an example, you’re getting one-third as much oxygen, one-third as many nutrients, and one-third the waste
44 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | MARCH/APRIL 2018
disposal from those cells in your 50s or 60s than you did in your 20s or 30s. A newborn baby has about 10 vasomotic stimulations a minute, and an adult about three to five a minute. If you have a chronic condition it can be one every 10 minutes. Our bodies need good microcirculation as a foundation for healthy cellular metabolism, only then can your body regenerate, selfregulate, and self-heal. The optimal regulation of circulation is a prerequisite for ensuring good levels of health and fitness. If microcirculation has diminished, then the consequences may be chronic degenerative conditions. To learn more about this subject, contact Dr. Chris Heeb at (314) 265-2117 to reserve your seat for his upcoming presentations at Westborough Country Club in Kirkwood, MO. Seating is limited so don’t delay. Better yet, register at our website: www.drheeb.com. Dr. Chris Heeb is a chiropractic physician in private practice for over 25 years. He has appeared on TV and radio regularly since 1995, now educating patients on a new revolutionary technology that enhances blood flow. Currently, he works with other medical specialists as a consultant to integrate this technology into their offices and is a frequent speaker on the subject of microcirculation.
Being healthy is important to everyone. But true health is much more than being disease free. It’s about possessing a sense of peace and well-being, as well as physical wellness. From proper nutrition, to getting enough sleep, to seeing your doctor on a regular basis – there are plenty of ways to ensure your whole self maintains an optimal level of wellness. Andrew Goodman, owner of Aquarius Wellness Center for Healing Arts in Clayton, understands that complete health isn’t just physical. “The word ‘health’ is so often associated with weight, blood pressure, medicines, things like that. We understand that true wellness is who you are as much as what you are,” he explains. “Which is why we’ve created such a beautiful physical space at Aquarius Wellness, as well as providing a fulfilling service experience.” While Aquarius Wellness offers a wide range of services that include skin care, Reiki and gemstone therapy, acupuncture, and cupping therapy, their specialty service is – and will continue to be – massage therapy. “Massage is our most requested service, and we see the greatest breadth of benefits to our clients in massage as well,” says Goodman. While massage and massage therapy treatments have long been considered a luxury or indulgence, more and more studies are showing that massage treatments can provide both physical and mental relief for a wide range of conditions. An obvious and immediate result of massage therapy is relief from muscle pain and tension. But other chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, digestive disorders, TMJ, and a myriad of stress-related conditions can be managed, and in some cases effectively treated, through regular massage therapy. In fact, reports from the National Institutes of Health and the American Massage Therapy Association suggest that regular massage treatments may help prevent disease by improving immune function and reducing stress. Though massage therapy shouldn’t replace regular visits or care from a medical doctor, the benefits of massage as a part of your regular wellness routine can certainly contribute to your overall quality of life. If you’re interested in learning more, contact a reputable massage professional to discuss your options about the benefits of integrating a regular massage therapy routine into your healthy lifestyle. Some of the most noticeable symptoms of drug abuse are those that affect the body’s inner workings. For example, your body’s tolerance to a drug occurs when a drug is abused for long enough that increased quantities or strengths are required to achieve the previous effects. This desire for a more intense high, achieved through these means, is extremely dangerous and can easily lead to overdose. The diminishing effects set in after the first time, and the user constantly tries to replicate the first high he or she gets from the drug by taking increasing amounts. This is extremely dangerous and can quickly lead to overdose.

Changes in appearance can be additional clues to possible drug use and may include: • Bloodshot or glazed eyes. • Dilated or constricted pupils. • Abrupt weight changes. • Bruises, infections, or other physical signs at the drug’s entrance site on the body. Disruption to normal brain functioning, changes in personality, and heart and organ dysfunction can be signs of long-term drug abuse.
Behavioral Symptoms Drug abuse negatively affects a person’s behavior and habits as he or she becomes more dependent on the drug. The drug itself can alter the brain’s ability to focus and form coherent thoughts, depending on the substance. Changes in behavior, such as the following, can indicate a problem with drug abuse: • Increased aggression or irritability. • Changes in attitude/personality. • Lethargy. • Depression. • Sudden changes in a social network. • Dramatic changes in habits and/ or priorities. • Financial problems. • Involvement in criminal activity. Learning to recognize the physical or behavioral signs of drug abuse can help prevent the problem from progressing further. How to fix that
“Text Neck”
Upcoming Features
May/June: Bridal Issue Fitness for the Bride Pamper the Bride - Bridal Resource Guide Yoga for Stress Relief Perfect Smiles Bachelorette Spa Parties Luxury Honeymoons Less is More Green Homes It never fails, we used to have “Wii elbow” or “Blackberry thumb,” or more commonly, we hear about “Tennis elbow.” Now we have “Text neck.” But basically, they all are repetitive stress disorders. Anytime that there is an increase in repetitive, abnormal stress on a joint, there’s going to be pain. With this new disorder, “text neck,” it’s about the faulty position we hold our heads in while we work on the computer or smartphone. The head weighs 10-14 pounds. For every degree that you tilt forward, the amount of weight on your neck grows exponentially. At 30 degrees forward, the head weighs 40 pounds. At 60 degrees forward, it weighs 60 pounds. And it’s that 45 to 60 degree angle that we tend to hang out at when we look at our smartphones.
Imagine all the times you check your email or Facebook every day, and how many hours that adds up to. If you already have neck pain, you probably instinctively avoid positions that hurt. If you’re having some discomfort, but not full-blown pain, this fix is especially for you. It’s all about alignment and finding neutral. A loaded cervical spine (your neck), in a poor position creates abnormal stress and pain. Fix your alignment and then lose that “text neck.”
First, sit or stand up straight. Then align your head like there’s a book on top of it (an oldie but goodie). Tuck your chin in so it’s not jutting forward, tuck it back like you’re giving yourself a double chin. If it’s uncomfortable, back off about 20%. That’ll be close to your spinal neutral position. Then roll your shoulder blades back and down, raise your hands up in front of you with your elbows bent, and look down with your eyes. BOOM! Text neck abolished!
Try this out for 21 days. It takes 21 days for a movement performed every day to become a habit. We don’t think about the importance of achieving good spinal health during pregnancy. Despite all the typical aches and pain that accompany most pregnant women, such has sciatica, hip pain, round ligament pain, headaches, pubic symphysis pain (SPD), carpal tunnel, etc.. we are usually told by our primary care givers to deal with the pain because it will go away after the baby is born. Unfortunately, this is not often the case. Pain always has an underlying reason and should be addressed by a trained physician. Our mission at Keough Chiropractic is to educate our patients about health and holistic living, especially during the pre and postnatal period. In no other time in a woman’s life is taking care of her body more important that when she is preparing her body to conceive, carrying a baby and the period after her baby is born when she is her child’s main source of food, warm and love.

Welcoming the New I read recently that we lose about 7% of our body daily, and take in about 7% new daily. In theory that gives us an opportunity to consciously release some of what we want and even need to let go of daily. The corollary to that is we have an opportunity to bring in something new daily… if we do that consciously we can bring in new thoughts, new structures, and new possibilities. We can march forth with newness on a daily basis, allowing us to continuously create something new for us. What we more often do is to continuously recreate the same on a daily basis. Yet, that potential is there – built into our physical, emotional, and spiritual existence – the ability to make new ideas, health, opportunities, relationships, and thoughts. Think of the example of an old saying many of us live by, ‘Life is Hard’. Can we imagine instead, consciously saying that life is good and all is possible? What does that look like and feel like to you?
As we change that belief our self-talk changes from one of negativity to one of positivity. When something bad or tough happens, we can then tell ourselves that this is tough and now let’s see what happens because of this. We can say things like that instead of that is tough and all is bad and I can’t imagine what to do now. Feel the difference? Make a game of this and see what happens.

One of the things I like so much about the astrology work and the family constellations is that they are vehicles that help us to change our old stories and to see us and our lives and family with new eyes or a new perspective. Through astrology sessions, we can see us more dispassionately and with more objectivity without the negative self-talk, so we can more easily accept who we are and gain tools to work with to enhance our gifts and reinforce our weaknesses. The family constellation work helps us to accept what was and to move towards what is so we can create

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy for Optimal Healthy Lifestyle By Dr. George Andreoff, MD Health and Wellness
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) can provide: • Calmer, more stable mood • Reduced body fat • Increased energy levels • Higher sex drive • Stronger mental clarity • Improved muscle tone and mass As men and women age – when testosterone levels decline and ovaries produce diminishing amounts of estrogen and progesterone – they begin to feel the symptoms of hormone deficiency. The result is often insomnia, chronic fatigue, memory loss, and loss of libido. Weight gain is also tied to hormone deficiencies; most commonly resulting in abdominal fat. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can help manage these undesirable symptoms and revitalize a sense of wellbeing. BHRT replenishes testosterone levels following andropause, the male equivalent to menopause, often referred to as “Low T.” Men usually notice the benefits of BHRT within 2-4 weeks. Female patients of any age experiencing hormone imbalance begin to feel a difference within 48-72 hours. BHRT hormones, identical in molecular structure to hormones naturally made

Data shows the most efficient method to administer BHRT in both men and women is by pellet implant. BHRT pellets, slightly larger than a grain of rice, deliver consistent levels of hormones for 3-5 months in women and 4-6 months in men, depending on how rapidly the patient metabolizes the hormones.

Optimize Your Eye Health for Spring
By Dr. Anderson and Dr. Brodeur
Visit us at one of these convenient locations:
Spring is right around the corner, with warm sun and blooming flowers. Some people see spring as a dreaded season with elevated pollen counts and itchy, red eyes. The good news is that allergies can be controlled with the correct protocols. A few approaches for red, itchy, watery eyes are the following: Avoid allergens! It’s common sense to limit exposure to the allergens that you are sensitive to. Consider wearing wrap around sunglasses when the pollen count is high. Remove your contacts. Contact lenses can attract and accumulate allergens. Wearing glasses during the allergy season can be more comfortable. Better yet, switching to daily disposals can help avoid the buildup of allergies and debris on your lenses. Over the counter medicine can reduce the eye’s ability to produce tears. The second generation antihistamines aren’t as drying to the eye as the first generation. The doctors at Pearle Vision can also recommend the best eye drop to take, whether it is a prescription or OTC eye drop.
Dr. Eric Kamps and Associates 13329 Manchester Rd Des Peres, MO 63131
314-965-4435
Another way to reduce allergy symptoms is to shower before bed. Allergies and pollen collect on our skin and hair. We put our heads in our pillows, the allergens are attached to the pillow, and then are transferred to our face through the night. Changing our pillowcases frequently, even nightly if allergies are severe, can also reduce exposure. Foods that contain essential fatty acids primarily include fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines. If you are not a fish lover, supplements like fish oil, chia seeds, and salmon oil are available. As always, check with your physician before adding supplements to your diet to make sure they don’t act adversely with medication you may be taking. Dry eye syndrome also contributes to eye allergies. Dry eye syndrome is caused by a lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. DES is more common among women, possibly due to hormonal changes. Signs of DES include blurriness, sensitivity to lights, irritation from windy conditions, fatigued eyes at the end of the day, problems wearing contacts, scratchy or gritty feeling, excessive resting, and red eyes to name a few. There are ways to manage dry eyes that include artificial tears, staying hydrated, and eating a diet in essential fatty acids or anti-inflammatory foods.
An annual eye exam is recommended to ensure optimal eye health. At Pearle Vision, we truly care about the health of your eyes. The doctors offer a level of personal attention wrapped with state of the art technology.

Health Runs Deep
The Power That Made the Body Heals the Body.
By Dr. John Calhoun
When we think of health we often think of being thin and fit, or not feeling any aches or pains; but our health runs deeper than that. True health begins when we are functioning at 100%, but most of us don’t know how well our body is actually functioning. We can make a guess based on how we are feeling, but feeling and function are two very different things. To measure the overall functionality of our body, we have to measure the functionality, or health, of our Nervous System, which is made up of our brain, spinal cord, and nerves and is protected by our spinal bones and skull. The health of our nervous system is important because this is where our innate intelligence lives. Innate intelligence runs all the functions of our body. For instance, our hearts are beating, our lungs are breathing, our stomachs are digesting food, and we don’t have to think about it.
Our mission is to serve and empower the families and individuals of our community to make informed decisions about their health care. We know that health is a journey and healing takes time. Let us partner with you and your family as we take steps together to make your health dreams your reality.

www.empowerstlouis.com
However, our innate intelligence is not the only thing living in our nervous system. Our immune system also lives in and is run by our nervous system. So, when our nervous system is not functioning at 100%, the other systems of our body, like our immune system or respiratory system, cannot function optimally either. This dysfunction is most often caused by a vertebral subluxation complex, which occurs when one or more bones in our spine shift out of alignment, putting pressure on our spinal cord and/or nerves. This blocks the communication between the brain and the body – our innate intelligence – leading to dysfunctions that can eventually lead to aches and pains. If we as a society took better care of our nervous systems, we would all experience a greater level of health. For information on how to take care of your nervous system, contact Dr. John Calhoun with Empower Chiropractic at (636)556-0256, located at 2951 Dougherty Ferry Rd, St. Louis, MO 63122.

The Health Benefits of CBD Oil (or Cannabidiol) by Katie Thomas
We have eleven systems within our body that most people are aware of, for example, the digestive system, respiratory system, and nervous system to name a few. We also have a twelfth system that probably wasn’t mentioned in high school science class, called the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). It’s primary function is creating homeostasis (balance) that works with all the other systems within the body.
CB1 and CB2 are endocannabinoid receptors that are produced naturally within the body. Ideally these endocannabinoids circulate within the body when needed to keep the body functioning at its best. Phytocannabinoids are derived from plants such as hemp or echinacea that can interact and affect CB1 and CB2 receptors and, in turn, the Endocannabinoid system.
The Endocannabinoid system (ECS) supports the body’s natural responses to pain, stress, anxiety, and many other issues. It is comprised of receptors that lie within the body: the brain, organs, connective tissues, and glands. These receptors are CB1 (found mostly in the brain and the central nervous system) and CB2 (found primarily in the immune system and even found on white blood cells).
Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two most abundant phytocannabinoid rich compounds found naturally in hemp. THC is responsible for the “high” feeling. CBD will not get you high but does have incredible health benefits. Research has shown that CBD can trigger the body to build more endocannabinoid receptors throughout the nervous system and immune system to create homeostasis. CBD acts like the key that unlocks the receptors in the body.
PTSD, epilepsy, and IBS are now classified as “clinical endocannabinoid deficiencies.” CBD products give us the opportunity to ‘activate’ the Endocannabinoid system organically to produce more cannabinoids. If we support the production of endocannabinoids in our body with phytocannabinoids and eat in ways that help to nourish the receptors, your body has the potential to bring back a state of vibrant health. The Endocannabinoid system plays a large role in our body’s balance and can be nourished through phytocannabinoid rich products and certain foods. The Natural Way in Fenton specializes in helping you stay healthy and fit. With a wide range of natural teas, whole foods, vitamins and supplements, and guidance from our knowledgeable staff, we help you feel your best inside and out!

4 Tips for Financial Fitness Most people would like to follow a budget, spending less, and saving more to build up a larger nest egg. But some are searching for guidelines to help them.
Here are a few simple changes that can make a difference:
Create a “24-hour” rule
If you see something online that you want, put it in your cart and leave it there for 24 hours before you buy it. If you’re in a traditional store, only buy what you intended to when you walked in. If you see something else you like, wait a day and make a return trip if you still want it. If it’s a good idea, you’ll come back for it. If not, you’ll still have that money.
Clean up your budget If you have a subscription to a service that your aren’t using, drop it. Take a look at your phone, internet and television services; maybe there are cheaper options available. Review an entire month of charges in your bank and credit card accounts, trying to find ways to spend less. How much do you spend on coffee and meals out regularly? Maybe a coffee pot at home or bringing lunch to work would free up significant dollars.
Find an app There are several great budgeting and account-tracking apps. If you watch your accounts regularly, it’s easy to notice when you’ve begun to spend more in one category than usual, prompting you to think about whether that’s a good idea or not. Our clients have access to an online resource called eMoney, which not only helps track spending and budgeting, but also allows you to view your investment accounts and projections about your financial goals.
Invest in yourself Save money regularly. “Save” doesn’t simply mean “don’t spend.” It means set the money aside into a separate account. Initially, this might be a savings account. When it grows, you might want to consider other investment options. C. Michael Unterreiner, ChFC, founded Financial Legacy Associates to create an environment where financial professionals could serve their clients better by sharing their experiences and ideas. He has served his clients by recommending investment and insurance solutions to their financial planning, retirement planning and college funding challenges. 16020 Swingley Ridge Road, Suite 100 Chesterfield, MO 63017 | 636-777-7099, mikeu@financiallegacy.com | www.financiallegacy.com/michael-unterreiner.

With March and April being designated National Nutrition and Garden months, respectively, I find it ever-important to focus on an aspect of our lifestyle that is easily and quickly modifiable— our nutrition! The problem is, there are endless opinions, voices, and fads around nutrition, and many people are left asking “what’s the truth?!” No matter what eating regimen you follow, there are four areas related to nutrition that every eater should focus on to maximize their health and fortify their systems through the foods they are eating. Carbohydrates: a swear word to many, but essential to most body functions, the carbs you take in must rank low on the glycemic index to minimize any spike in blood sugar. Vegetables and fruits – organic dark leafy greens, mushrooms, beans, Granny Smith apples, and berries – are great sources of carbohydrates and grains such as buckwheat, quinoa, and brown rice will be great swaps for what you’re currently eating. Fats: eating fat does not make you fat – the type of fat you eat is what is important. Similar to carbohydrates, the fats in your
diet should come from actual whole foods grown from a plant versus their processed counterparts. Organic nuts and seeds and their butter forms; coconut products; and high-quality oils such as avocado, flaxseed, and hemp can be added to any dish to maximize nutrients and add flavor. Proteins: your meat and non-meat protein sources should be organic, sustainablyraised, free of hormones or antibiotics, and when possible, locally sourced.
farming methods and following the Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen recommendations from the Environmental Working Group will ensure you’re making the best choices for you and your family! Register for one of several free health workshops where you’ll be coached through the necessary changes to make this your best year ever. The moment we bring a child into our world, life changes in some very big ways. This sweet new life comes completely dependent on us in every way imaginable. As poetic as this sounds, we need to remember that for us to take care of our littlest ones, we must care for ourselves as well.
It takes time to adjust to life with a new baby, but if you’re experiencing distressing feelings or having difficulty bonding with your baby, therapeutic support is available. If your thoughts become unsettling or you worry you may harm yourself or your baby – seek immediate support.
Many women experience mood changes before and after birth. The hormonal shifts (and lack of sleep) are enough to send many of us on the wildest ride of our lives! Typically, this resolves without intervention, but sometimes the mental and physical load feels heavier than we can hold alone. As many as one in seven mothers experience postpartum depression and anxiety, and new fathers can experience (paternal) postpartum depression, too.
You Got This, Mama! Embrace the little and big moments, and find ways to TAKE CARE OF YOU in the process of caring for your bundle of sweetness.
Many factors may influence postpartum mental health, and each woman experiences postpartum life in her own unique way.
Jen McCurdy, M.Ed., LPC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in women’s mental health and wellness: infertility, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, attachment and transitions. Jen’s mission is to empower her clients to think big even when hope seems small. To learn more, visit www.JMWellness.net.
3 Tips for Embracing Postpartum Wellness: • L isten to Your Body: Your body holds your story; listen to her. If something doesn’t feel right – either physically or emotionally – seek support. • Tell the Birth Story: Your child’s birth is the most intimate story of both of your lives. Record it while it’s fresh, and take time to notice if there are moments you wish to explore or heal. • A ssemble the Tribe: We need one another! Identify the people you can rely on most, and ask for support when needed.

Big Love
at The Chopra Center for Wellbeing at La Costa Resort and Spa by Stacy Oliver Neal

“The goal in life is not to find love, it’s to be love.” - Robert Holden I began my February sabbatical at my cabin in the Ozark Mountains, with the weather holding steady at about 6-degrees during the day. I hiked 2.5 miles per day along the St. Francis River, chopped wood, and carried water, but cabin fever set in earlier than anticipated. After eight days, it was clear that I would not make it another 20, so I began reconstructing my planned 28-day sabbatical. A friend living in Del Mar, California, north of San Diego, waved me out to her home with an ocean view, but I was also in need of pampering at a resort. As I was planning my escape to the sunshine and warmth, I recalled that The Chopra Center for Wellbeing, an ayurvedic health center run by Deepak Chopra himself, was in Carlsbad just a few minutes away. My escape was aligning. The Chopra Center has been on my spa bucket list for years. My husband and I began practicing an ayurvedic diet and lifestyle a few years back and I often heard that the Chopra Center was the creme de la creme of ayurvedic health centers on the planet. I reached out to the center and they created a media package for me to not only visit but to validate my decision. There was a LOVE BEYOND LIMITS workshop the weekend of my visit, so I chose to stay at the La Costa Resort and Spa and take part in this exclusive workshop given by none other than Hay House author and speaker Dr. Robert Holden. Dr. Holden is one of the few Hay House celebrities I had yet to meet or bring into St. Louis and I have always loved his Hay House radio show – his lovely British accent along with his topic of LOVABILITY. The universe was conspiring for the perfect getaway. Sunshine, ayurvedic treatments, a great teacher, and time with a dear friend – here I come! I chose to immerse myself in the three-day workshop and ayurvedic treatments. I treated my dear friend to a spa day at the luxurious, award-winning La Costa Resort and Spa, a Condé Nast Traveler readers’ choice top resort and U.S.
News & World Report “Top Wellness Retreat Around the World.” Perfect for a personal getaway, the resort is also family friendly, with a variety of activities and amenities to ensure an enjoyable vacation, celebration, or retreat. Close to beaches and popular tourist attractions, the staff invites guests to relax and unwind with eight pools, two championship golf courses, 17 tennis courts, and the world-renown spa. Our ayurvedic treatments were at The Chopra Center, just a short walk across the luxurious campus. The next morning the workshop began with an in depth meditation lecture by Roger Gabriel, one of Deepak Chopra’s senior teachers. The afternoon was spent with Manjula Nadarajah who had us crying and laughing all at once throughout her talk, “Shine Your Light.” Day two began with Kundalini Yoga with Libby Carstensen. Dr. Holden joined us in this heart opening yoga, which prepared and opened us up to a full day of inspiration. Dr. Holden guided us down the path of recognising what love is and how to increase it in every area of our lives. Prior to the last day afternoon session, I checked out so that I was prepared to exit immediately and attend an art opening in San Diego. I dressed for the event but went light on the makeup, expecting another afternoon of heart opening tears. Instead, I walked into the sanctuary to find 150 workshop participants on their feet dancing to Stevie Wonder. The lovefest was now a high energy dance group, followed by another immersion session into the field of infinite possibilities. I left feeling a natural high, with an open heart and refreshed spirit. By being open to changing my initial plan for my sabbatical, I was able to find the physical, emotional, and spiritual recharge I needed and more. This clearly should not be a once in a lifetime visit but should be an annual retreat on my journey to optimal health and wellness.
Supporting Women Through Outreach and Free Breast Cancer Screenings Chantelle Nickson-Clark is the founder of The Pink Angels Foundation, an organization that provides resources to women diagnosed with breast cancer. In fact, she is an 8-year breast cancer survivor. Nickson-Clark’s story is a familiar, she lost both her mother and aunt to breast cancer. She stood side by side with two cousins as they, too, survived breast cancer and a sister who endured countless surgeries after testing positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation. After her diagnosis, Nickson-Clark turned her pain into passion, making a high-level commitment to raising awareness against breast cancer through partnerships, connecting women with free mammogram services, monthly support sessions, and promoting genetic testing and case study participation across the nation. Nickson-Clark continues to influence women in her community through motivational speaking on health and wellness. She has been nationally recognized by various media outlets, including Huffington Post, Pynk Magazine, and Black Doctor, and she was featured on the cover of Breast Cancer Wellness Magazine. Ms. Nickson-Clark has also received several awards for her

tireless efforts to those diagnosed with breast cancer. With her organization, she continues to add value to one’s life, devoting countless hours of support to each one of her Pink Angels through her attempts to eliminate any financial hardship or burdens that may arise during treatment. Nickson-Clark attends chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and surgeries as well as providing limited assistance, groceries, and more to her pink angels. It is her mission and vision that one day a cure will be found. Until then, she continues to walk side by side with women until they reach the finish line of survivorship.

&S RESTAURANT RAVE
Southwest Taste With Modern Flair Canyon Cafe offers customers a distinct taste of the Southwest that isn’t found anywhere else in St. Louis. In a renovation that took place last Fourth of July, the restaurant now boasts an atmosphere that’s as modern and welcoming as its food is scrumptious and unique.
A new collection of charming antiques has been brought in to replace the collection that had occupied the restaurant for the last ten years. As before, traditional Southwestern motifs are sprinkled throughout the café. The bar underwent the most impressive transformation of all. Glittering, multi-colored mosaic tiles serve as the backdrop for Canyon Cafe’s renowned collection of liquors. The minimal, contemporary lighting hanging above the countertop creates an inviting glow even during the daytime. Meanwhile, the offerings from the kitchen remain as up-todate and delicious as ever. Executive Chef Francisco Bravo prepares a number of dishes from his hometown in Mexico that are consistently huge hits with restaurant-goers. The street tacos come in many varieties and can be mixed and matched for a customized experience. The chimichanga, a flour tortilla that is stuffed with grilled chicken, bell pepper, sweet corn, and Jack cheese, and then fried, is another of the restaurant’s most popular items. Plus, the famous Limit-2 margarita, often called “the best margarita in town,” is made with only top-of-the-line ingredients (and thus why you’re limited to having two!).
Fire-Grilled Tuna: Served over oven-roasted vegetables and southwest rice. Topped with an avocado fan and chipotle sauce.

& S INTERVIEW
Y
OsteoStrong helps you live better and healthier at any age Interview with Laura Harper who, with her husband Johnny Harper, owns OsteoStrong St. Louis and are OsteoStrong Regional Developers in Missouri What made you think about opening an OsteoStrong?
Once a week? Ten minutes? How do you know it really helps?
It’s a long story, but it started as a way to help my father. I learned that the OsteoStrong system can be beneficial for rehabbing stroke victims and I wanted my dad to start using it right away.
Biofeedback on each machine measures strength gains, and members monitoring their bone density with their doctor often see increases over time. One of the best success stories is the mother of the man who invented this equipment to help with her osteoporosis, she’s in her 80s and has the bone density of a 30 year old! 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures. Knowing we are making a difference in reducing our member’s fracture risk is priceless.
Wow, that’s a powerful reason to start a business. How does it actually work? Think about gymnasts. They have some of the best bone and skeletal health on the planet. Why? Because when they flip through the air and strike the ground, it puts tremendous pressure on their skeletal systems. The “high impact force” triggers new bone and muscle tissue growth, which has a positive effect on many aspects of health. Our system gives the benefits of high impact force, without the risk of injury. Under the supervision of a trained technician, each Spectrum device allows individuals to experience the precise level of force for their musculoskeletal system. And here’s the kicker – you only do one 10-minute session a week. You don’t even break a sweat!
Can’t you get the same results by lifting weights at the gym? The answer is “No!” OsteoStrong’s Skeletal strength conditioning is completely different. Research shows that the minimum amount of pressure to trigger new hip bone tissue is 4.2 times bodyweight. That’s easily attained with our system, but not with weights. We also trigger “myofibril” growth, which develops the density within muscle cells. The metabolic rate of this change is longer and the structural changes are longer lasting. This is why we see such rapid strength improvement, at all ages.
So, “myofibril growth” helps athletes? Absolutely. Because of the bone and muscle density changes, athletes can improve overall performance, have fewer injuries, and play their sport longer.
Are there going to be more locations in the region? We’re in Creve Coeur and O’Fallon, MO, and “coming soon” in Ballwin, Clayton, Kirkwood, St. Peters, and South County. We’re growing everywhere, even in Europe. Franchise opportunities are available if people want to talk to us.
Okay, I’m all in – how does somebody get started? That’s the easiest part – give us a call and we’ll buy your first two sessions. No obligations. In my opinion, it’s the easiest and most effective thing you’ll do all week. It’s one of the most profound ideas in human physical development in decades.. You just have to try it!
