Happy is the New Healthy “Don’t worry, be happy!” the song says. Why? Authentically happy people are healthier. Emotions or feelings arise from thoughts, positive thoughts create positive feelings and negative thoughts create negative feelings. We have all heard that “misery loves company.” So, wouldn’t it follow that happy loves company, too? When we are happy, we are more active and healthier. When we are happy, we make healthier choices for ourselves. We all have experienced trauma in our lives, some more than others. That means that some have more healing to do, but we all need to heal our traumas, our stories, and our beliefs. It is our responsibility as adults, and it is solely our responsibility. The people or circumstances that caused the trauma cannot heal it for us, nor is it their responsibility. This is hard to hear at times, but we are fully responsible for our lives moving forward as adults. We might have been victims as children, as adults we get to be warriors. The wonderful news is that in today’s modern world there are infinite resources for healing our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wounds, including psychotherapy, tapping therapy, acupuncture, EMDR, and Emotional Release therapy. The list is endless and, hopefully, your excuses to avoid doing the inner work which will change your outer circumstances are few. We do have to take action. We must take full responsibility for everything in our lives, including our reality. We are creating this reality with our thoughts and they create our beliefs, which create our lives. Just like finding a coach or consulting a doctor when we’re in pain, we have to reach out for help. We work on ourselves to feel confident. Making our bodies stronger, more flexible, and healthier takes practice and intention, and achieving happiness is much the same. Simply repeating our story perpetuates the drama and contributes to the problem. It gives it power. Notice how you are addicted to the story and the drama, and then practice changing your story. When we do this our thoughts change. Next our reactions begin to change, and eventually our outer circumstances change. We learn to respond rather than react. We calmly go about our day responding with ease and grace. We attract more and more positive experiences and happy people appear. What is one thing that you can do today that will make you happy? Start there on your road to happy and healthy. I will be going to yoga. It never fails to not only align my body, but I always leave happy.

Letter from the Editor - Elizabeth Diebold Welcome to the Healthy Woman Issue The responsibilities that moms, wives, aunts, sisters, and grandmas face each and every day is never ending. We are taking care of our families, kids, partners, pets, homes, and careers‌ and we often forget to take care of our self. What does your health mean to you? If you could put a price on it, how much would it be worth to you? If I had to put a price on my health, I would say it is priceless. If we do not have our health, what do we have to offer? Yet it happens, and if everything and everyone gets put first, before taking care of our own health, we will burn out. I am guilty of this myself and need gentle reminding from time to time to get back on track. Self-care is a muscle we build and like anything, it takes practice. This reminds me of the airplane attendant saying put your oxygen mask on first, then put the oxygen mask on your loved ones or children. It is such a simple analogy you have probably heard, but worth mentioning. We have nothing to give, if we do not fill our own cup up first. To live the life of a healthy woman, we must have a plan to relax, refresh, renew, replenish, and rejuvenate. Here is a suggestion, create a nourishment menu. Have fun with it. List all the things that you love to do to nourish yourself and then work it into your schedule. Plan it. You are so worth it and you will reap so many rewards from it. You will have more to give and your family, loved ones, and everyone around you will benefit many times over with your light shining so much brighter.

SPA & BEAUTY
Enable Your Body to Create a Younger Version of Your Skin Noninvasive laser therapy delivers focused, effective results
Skin reflects a life well lived as well as life’s trials: laugh lines and crow’s feet from smiling, age spots from fun in the sun, wrinkles from intense concentration, acne scars or scars bearing evidence of surgery, stretch marks from pregnancy, brown spots from hormonal fluctuations (Melasma), and even Actinic Keratosis (AK), which is a pre-cancerous condition affecting 10 million Americans a year.
The treated skin appears immediately tighter because the heat of the laser contracts the skin’s collagen. The skin appears slightly pinkish and swollen for several days after the procedure. Patients will notice that small areas heal quickly, while larger areas may take a bit longer to heal. Most people find that they can return to their regular activities in one-totwo days.
Even pampered skin eventually loses collagen and shows signs of aging.
New collagen production takes 8 to 12 weeks and the skin continues to improve for three to four months after treatment. Most people experience the best results with three to six treatments.
Fraxel® is a noninvasive laser therapy that treats signs of aging by targeting small “fractional” areas of the skin. Its process helps to rejuvenate cells below the skin’s surface by stimulating collagen production to replace damaged skin with new healthy skin. The results are subtle and gradually increase over time because your skin rejuvenates itself. Fraxel® is far more effective than are creams and it doesn’t involve cutting or peeling the skin or an extended healing time. A topical anesthetic cream is applied in the dermatologist’s office before the treatment, which can take up to an hour depending on the area treated.
Whenever being treated using laser therapies, to ensure you are safely treated, always choose a reputable clinic with experienced dermatologists and nurses. Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center is the premier center for laser skin treatments and Mohs surgery in the St. Louis area. Its services also include wrinkle relaxation treatments with Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®, as well as a variety of dermal fillers. Visit www.LaserSurgeryUSA.com or call 314.878.3839 to learn more.

Vein Pain & Pregnancy Varicose veins are enlarged superficial veins that often have a bulging, twisted or coiled appearance. They occur when the valves that should keep blood from running backward from the heart to the rest of the body become damaged, stretching the veins. They most commonly develop in the legs and can cause aching, ankle swelling, night cramps or feelings of leg fatigue or heaviness after prolonged periods of standing. There are several risk factors for varicose veins, one of the most common being pregnancy. Many women who have never had varicose veins develop them when they become pregnant (in their legs and other areas, such as the vulva). This is because of pressure on the veins due to an increase in blood volume and a decrease in the speed that blood returns from the extremities to the heart. Heightened progesterone levels also cause the walls of the blood vessels to relax. Fortunately, varicose veins tend to improve after childbirth, especially in women who didn’t have them before their pregnancy. If they don’t get better, there are a variety of treatments available.
14 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017
The following can help you prevent or lessen varicose veins during pregnancy:
Keep moving. Don’t sit or stand for long periods of time. Walking can help your circulation.
Elevate your legs whenever possible. Prop your feet up when sitting and sleep with your feet on a pillow to promote circulation.
Watch your weight. Extra weight can be hard on your veins, so try to keep within the recommended weight range for your stage of pregnancy.
Get support. Ask your doctor about special support pantyhose or stockings, which can improve blood flow and prevent swelling. If you suspect you have a vein condition, visit veins.www.veins.wustl.edu or call 314-362-5347 (362-LEGS) to schedule an appointment with the Washington University Vein Center and learn about treatment options.
Don’t suffer with varicose veins – they are treatable. Trust your legs to a board-certified Washington University vascular specialist and get rid of painful and unsightly varicose veins for good. Call today for more information on our non-invasive treatment options.

The Dangers of Chemicals in our Skincare Products Wellness From Wendy
By Wendy Breese
George Burns said you can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to get old. This comment is a perfect segue to reveal how to slow the aging process. Use clean products on your skin. To slow the aging process we need to become experts at chemical defense in regards to our body’s largest organ, our skin. Consider a nicotine patch for those trying to quit smoking. Patches are applied directly to the skin, which delivers nicotine via the bloodstream within 26 seconds. When we use products laden with harsh, toxic chemicals that are damaging organs, causing cancers, and disrupting hormones we are accelerating the aging process. People ask why toxic chemicals are allowed in the skin care products we use. In 1938, the cosmetic and skincare industry became self regulated. They can put whatever they want in products.

A client told me her product was really good because it was very expensive and came from Switzerland. The VERY first ingredient was propylene glycol, which is antifreeze. She was paying a lot to poison herself. Propylene glycol can cause liver and heart damage, plus skin irritations such as hives, rashes or eczema. Watch out for these toxic ingredients in your shampoos, body washes, soaps, lotions, deodorants, shaving creams and any product you are applying to the skin. An investigative reporter went into a manufacturing plant to see how shampoo was made. The first ingredient was water, then salt, propylene glycol, and sodium lauryl sulfate, which is engine degreaser. It creates suds, which are completely psychological. They could put one drop of 30 botanicals, which would have absolutely no beneficial properties in that small amount, and the product could be labeled natural! They can list all 30 natural ingredients, even though it was only one drop! It is all about branding and marketing. Make the front of the bottle attractive, label it as natural when in reality we are buying expensive water with chemicals in it. That is why we should turn the bottle around and read the ingredient label. If we can’t eat it or pronounce it, we really shouldn’t be putting it on our skin. Another highly toxic ingredient is Triclosan. When triclosan is used on the skin it kills all bacteria, the good along with the bad. Triclosan is found in antibacterial soaps and hand santizers. Triclosan is linked to infertility and is a thyroid disruptor. Just as important it causes antibiotic resistance. Parabens are an inexpensive preservative found in lotion, shampoo, shaving crème, sunscreen, make-up, baby products, just to name a few. These are hormone disruptors: linked to breast cancer and infertility. In order to find high quality products look for a company with impeccable production integrity. You want to look for truly natural and organic ingredients. A company that uses beneficial botanicals and plant extracts. Lemongrass Spa products is just such a company. We provide safe alternatives to all personal care products for babies, children, teens, moms, dads, and grandparents. My goal is to provide Wellness from Wendy from the outside into the greater St Louis area one family at a time. Fall into Beauty During This Transitional Season by Joseph A. Muccini, MD - Board Certified Dermatologist
Fall is here. This is an ideal time to take advantage of the
concern, and more than fillers or Botox can address, fall is breathing room between the hustle bustle of summer (with the perfect time for laser and applied energy treatments that more revealing clothes, warmer weather, family vacations, resurface and ablate much of the damaged skin, resulting etc.), and the demands of the winter holidays, to explore in new, fresher looking skin that is also tighter, smoother, cosmetic rejuvenation that is otherwise untimely. The arrival and more evenly pigmented. The more dramatic of these of autumn heralds one of the best opportunities to consider treatments, and those that can accomplish the greatest effect some of the more rewarding, and slightly more aggressive, over the shortest time, involve some degree of down time, procedures to address those issues that capture our attention making them a better fit for the fall when the intensity of when we stare at our “end-of-summer face” in the mirror. active summer schedules subside. Even if the goal is to While it is possible any time of year, including the fall, to make hold off a more aggressive cosmetic treatment until after small adjustments with fillers, Botox, etc, fall is a great time to the holidays, fall is an ideal time to reflect, evaluate, plan consider those things that may have a bigger payoff, but which and save for winter rejuvenation. For those of us who are necessarily may require a bit more recovery time. unable to allocate down time for a more rigorous cosmetic transformation, even in the fall, there are alternative pathways For example, if facial texture, wrinkling, mismatched such as staged and stacked treatments that can produce coloration, or other, less limited, issues are a cause for similar results. On such an “installment program”, a greater number of less aggressive treatments are done over time and are often capable of providing analogous improvements to the more aggressive single treatment. And, because they are less aggressive, many of the installment-type treatment plans may actually involve no significant downtime. However, because multiple treatments are required over a longer period of time in this scenario, it is important to get started in the fall to make real progress before the calendar once again rolls over to summer, a time when many of us desire to be at our annual cosmetic zenith. No matter the goals, logistical considerations, obligations, etc, fall is a great time to make and implement a plan that helps us put our best face forward.

For women, especially over 35 years old, weight loss and maintenance is often an ongoing battle. It can be confusing determining what is best with all the options out there for weight loss. The reality is that all of them (low carb, low fat, no sugar, portion control, exercise) will enable you to lose weight. What most women struggle with is keeping that weight off. Let’s face it, yo-yo dieting can be frustrating, costly on your closet and just downright exhausting. At Complete Fitness, we offer a program that not only focuses on healthy eating choices, but also on another key component: balanced hormones. We educate our members during our 20 pounds/30 days Fast Track Program about the hormones that hold them back, and guide them through the process of resetting that delicate balance so their bodies become efficient at losing body fat. Once we reach the ideal hormonal balance, we begin to customize each member’s personal eating plan through the Listen to Your Body program. Imagine what it could be like to know exactly what foods help your body to lose weight and keep it off! The benefits don’t stop at weight loss. Our members report that the health benefits they notice far outweigh the results on the scale. Many experience lower blood pressure, more restful sleep, lower cholesterol, joint pain alleviated, hot flashes and night sweats gone, acid reflux gone and increased energy to do the things they love. Our goal is not just weight loss; we strive to teach our members a lifestyle that will keep them happy, healthy and fully alive. To begin living your best life contact Erica Hunt, Licensed Weight Loss and Life Coach, at 618-655-1515 or visit www.ericahuntwellness.com for more information about our upcoming FREE Seminars.

Our Skin Keeps No Secrets –
It is the Storyteller! We come into the world with perfect skin – the narrative of what goes in and what goes on with our bodies. It is the largest organ of the body with the highest visibility. For instance, if your skin appears dehydrated, all other organs are dehydrated as well, and it is long past time to take action to solve the deficit. How we manage our perfect skin with lifestyle choices determines our storyline.
Nouveau professionals look at the skin – face and body – the bony structure, the soft tissue form, and the “character”, design a plan to enhance your natural beauty and manage the “character” of your story, so that you wear it with grace and elegance.
While we would like to continue life with perfect skin, life choices and age change us and our skin. If you think of photographs of the most interesting faces in the world, the faces that draw us in have great story lines. In fact, when Leonardo da Vinci taught his students to paint faces, he instructed them to begin with structure, apply form, and then develop the character. Character is what speaks to us. At Nouveau, we want to help you manage the character of your storyline.
Personal Care. Because We Care.
Skin is not static. While its beginning may appear porcelain or alabaster, it is not. It is constantly evolving in relationship to what we eat, drink, how we exercise, how we sleep and how we feel. For these reasons our skincare products, beauty treatments, and make-up needs are constantly changing as well. Change is good.
Care for your skin and body begins at birth and is a lifetime commitment. It is never too early and never too late to start.

Yoga made for “Every Body” It is our belief that one should create a BALANCED yoga practice and a life of Mind, Body and Spirit. 129 West First Street, O’Fallon, IL 62269 618-624-1900 UnityYogaAndWellness.com
O’Fallon, Illinois’ newest yoga studio upholds those standards in every class they offer. When Unity Yoga & Wellness owner Timi McMillin began her yoga teaching journey, she wanted yoga to be accessible to her friends and family members that needed movement and mindfulness. Timi developed a home studio so that those who might not feel comfortable in a commercial studio would have a safe, healthy, holistic, and encouraging environment to practice. As her home studio grew, Timi knew she wanted to bring the spirit of yoga for every body; not just to her friends and family, but to the entire Metro-East area.
‘Regardless of shape, size, age, and weight, yoga is for Every Body’ In November of 2016, Timi founded Unity Yoga & Wellness on 129 West 1st Street in O’Fallon, Illinois and infused the safe, warm, and comfortable feel that her home studio had into each of the rooms at her new public studio. Our location consist of 3 yoga studios that include: • The Wall Room for wall yoga that provide deeper stretches and supported postures. • The Heated Room using infrared heat for a healthier sweat and detoxification yoga practice. • Meditation Room with a quieter atmosphere and fireplace. All rooms are fully stocked with a variety of props. Unity also offers a private, quiet outdoor space for meditation and yoga, weather permitting. Unity also has 2 Wellness rooms in which Massage, Reiki and Healing Touch is offered by appointment. Our teachers are Yoga Alliance certified and offer a variety of yoga throughout the day. Unity offers classes categorized for Mind, Body and Spirit. We encourage students to take classes from each category. We feel a balanced yoga practice will create a balanced life. The studio created specialized classes, workshops, events and retreats for yoga for all ages, beginners, body types and limitations. The studio is fully handicapped accessible. Timi McMillin brought accessible yoga to the community and by doing so created her own: The Unity Community.

The list of benefits is expansive: • Improved flexibility • Increased muscular strength • Optimum digestive health (just to name a few) A consistent yoga practice provides the core of healthy living for all bodies. When we think about the benefits of yoga, most of us think of muscle flexibility. While the muscular benefits are vast and important, with a consistent yoga practice, all of the body’s systems improve and nagging pains go away. The number one benefit we hear from yoga practitioners is that low back pain is gone! Many practitioners lose weight and most report an overall happier outlook on life.
MUSCULAR SYSTEM: Flexible muscles are the most recognized benefit of yoga. This is great news since the muscular system is responsible for moving our body parts, maintaining the body’s posture and in the case of cardiovascular muscles, pumping oxygenated blood through our bodies, keeping us vibrant and alive. A consistent yoga practice, especially a power yoga practice, increases our muscle strength and flexibility. Strong and flexible muscles create peak performance, improve balance and reduce the risk of injury.
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: While muscle flexibility improves through yoga, so does the flexibility of arteries and veins. Add vigor to your yoga practice, and the overall function of the cardiovascular system improves, especially through aerobic activity, which are key components of Hot and Power Yoga. Increased circulation of oxygenated blood, amino acids, electrolytes and more nutrient rich fluids boost the body’s natural healing system.
SKELETAL SYSTEM: Utilizing proper alignment, yoga practitioners reap proven benefits of weight bearing exercise. Strong bones are known to postpone the effects of and delay the onset of osteoporosis. With improved balance, we are less likely to fall, avoiding unnecessary injuries. A wide variety of low impact yoga classes are offered.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: There are many yoga poses dedicated to “wringing out” our internal organs. As practitioners learn easily accessible poses, we come to understand that the twists, holds and core work tone our internal organs by squeezing and massaging them. The more we practice, the better we feel and the greater benefit we receive.
MENTAL BENEFITS: Yoga is a breath-focused discipline. As practitioners focus on moving their bodies in time with their breath, they begin to relax. They are often meditating without realizing it. Along with the physical results of yoga, confidence grows. Confidence and an improved sense of well-being are two undeniable, regularly acknowledged benefits of yoga. Yoga strengthens the body and mind. When practiced consistently it improves overall physical and mental health. There is no greater discipline for overall health. Yoga is prescribed regularly by doctors, physical therapists, and coaches of all sports. LOCAL YOGINIS by Tina Farmer
More and more fitness conscious women of all ages are discovering the strength benefits of yoga, a complement to the increased flexibility, improved balance, and mental clarity benefits that initially draw many to the practice. This issue’s featured yoginis find their practice of yoga also serves to release the stress of a busy modern life.
YOGA CORE & MORE Cathi Ponciroli (TOP)
Cathi, a busy attorney and the mom of three active girls, attended her first yoga class at Yoga Core & More in late 2013 because she was hoping to connect with other active moms from her kids’ school. In the three and a half years since she began, she’s noticed that yoga has changed her body and life in so many more ways that she an anticipated. Cathi feels physically and mentally stronger, and she’s much more flexible. She also appreciates the related health benefits to her practice, and notices she has fewer headaches and better manages the stresses of everyday life. Cathi earned her RYT 200 in early 2017, and she currently practices or teaches at Yoga Core & More almost every day. One of her favorite well-being routines is starting her day with yoga. She uses her early morning vinyasa-based practice to get her body moving, to ground herself, and to calm her ever-spinning mind.
YOGA SIX Studio
Lauren Shocklee (MIDDLE) Currently a teacher at Yoga Six St. Louis and Namaste in Kirkwood, yoga has been an important part of Lauren’s life for almost 10 years. She first tried yoga in her high school gym class and immediately fell in love with the practice and particularly the dynamic breathto-movement cues. Lauren has a background in dance and gymnastics, so she felt at ease with the movements, and she loves having the support of a positive community. When she’s not teaching or taking a yoga class, Lauren enjoys
spending time with her husband, family and friends painting, cooking, and hiking, and she loves the outdoors. An important aspect of her overall well being, yoga has impacted Lauren’s life for the better in so many ways. In addition to the physical benefits, yoga has taught her patience on and off the mat. Lauren used to work in the healthcare field where she truly learned the importance of self-care, and she believes that caring for your wellbeing is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. And investing in yourself is priceless.
GO YOGA! EXPRESS Gwen Phillips (BOTTOM)
In 2004, Gwen attended her first yoga class at the encouragement of her sister, though she didn’t feel that the practice was for her as she was too inflexible, unable to even touch her toes. A fan of fitness and activity, Gwen was an avid runner and also enjoyed high-intensity training. After her first pregnancy in 2008, Gwen turned to spinning, Pilates, and yoga to strengthen and tone without putting so much wear and tear on her body. Always looking to challenge herself, Gwen started practicing hot yoga in 2013. She found the practice was not only physically challenging, it helped her to find inner calmness, a real benefit to raising her boys. Gwen is a stay-at-home mother who enjoys cooking and keeping active with her husband and three children. She aims to attend 3 to 5 hot yoga classes a week at Go Yoga! express as part of her regular routine. When Gwen started practicing yoga she noticed the physical changes first, but it’s the emotional well being and spiritual benefits of her yoga practice that followed that have stretched deeper into her life. Always eager to learn more and dive deeper into her practice, Gwen recently started her 200 teacher training at Go Yoga! and she looks forward to sharing her knowledge and experience with others.
MEN MAT on the
by Tina Farmer
As the hot days of August begin to cool and the leaves start to turn, you may find yourself feeling less than motivated by the change in seasons. This issue’s Men on the Mat understand. They have found yoga to be a great practice for building core strength, balance, and energy through a focus on poses, posture, and alignment.
YOGA 6 STUDIO Patrick Zarrick (TOP)
A physical education teacher at an all-male high school in St. Louis, Patrick enjoys a variety of physical activities, and doesn’t let cooler temperatures keep him from rafting, mountain biking, backpacking, or enjoying his photography hobby. After practicing martial arts for 25 years, he discovered the Yoga 6 Studio during a period where he was seeking to add balance to his workout routine, and he’s been hooked ever since. In addition to the more traditional school sports taught in high schools, Patrick teaches his students yoga. One immediate difference he noticed as a result of picking up yoga was an improvement in his posture, which helped him retrain his body to quit slouching. He is also much more flexible as well as less stressed, more mindful and focused. Those benefits are the reason he’s so committed to incorporating the practice into his Phys Ed classes. An enthusiast of the great outdoors, Patrick is a leader the Outdoor Adventure Program and the Campus Activities & Security Coordinator in addition to his job as teacher and racquetball coach.
JOY OF YOGA
Matt Healey (MIDDLE) Matt attended his first yoga class in February 2016 with his wife, who bought him a Drop In class at Joy of Yoga, where he met his teacher Joy Page. As a lifelong martial artist, Matt was aware of the benefits of yoga but had never made the time to attend a class. After that first class, his hips felt 10 years younger, and he’s been hooked ever since.
Matt loves the combination of breathing, relaxation, and mindfulness, as well as the subtle activations when moving through the poses. His physical and mental awareness has also gone up, which has been a great help in his everyday life, especially at work. Matt manages a warehouse and lifts things all day long and he notices his the physical benefits of practice all the time. Additionally, his posture is much better when doing tasks such as sitting and writing.
JOY OF YOGA
Kenneth Stewart (BOTTOM) Kenneth started practicing yoga as a lifestyle in 2016. Though he’d explored yoga years before, it wasn’t until his driving career started to put a strain on his body that he took yoga seriously. That’s when Kenneth realized that he was not healthy in mind, body, and spirit. When Kenneth started practicing yoga, he was overweight, overworked, and feeling major pain in his joints and muscles to the point he found it unbearable. After experiencing yoga on another level during a week-long yoga retreat in Jamaica last year, Kenneth was certain this was his path to healing. I practice at Joy of Yoga, and I’m convinced that I’m my best when I do yoga daily. He found that yoga not only has had a positive physical impact on his life, but his mental and spiritual realms have been enhanced as well. Kenneth integrates his love of yoga into his obsession of art, music, and poetry, and today he’s confident he’s living his best life.

The Profound Effects of Energy Conditioning St. Louis’ original hot yoga studio Designed for all fitness levels Offering 60 and 90 minute classes
In the midst of everyday life, people are becoming more aware of the need to take care of themselves in a deeper way. However, most people still will put everyone else first. Women especially have been conditioned for so long to put our own needs last. What we don’t realize is that when we make the effort to put our health and well-being first, we are then able to care for others more effectively and in ways we are not aware. Many years ago, I was a working mother of four and always on the go. I was always pushing myself to exhaustion. One day our secretary stopped me and said, “Is all this rushing, hurrying, skipping meals and not making time for yourself what you want to teach your daughters?” What a huge wake up call that was. I certainly did not want my children to live by my example so I quickly started looking at what needed to change in my life. That was almost twenty years ago and it’s still not easy to put myself first but I realize now how it affects others around me.

As the years moved on, I began learning more about our energy systems and how they work. Though most people can’t see them, these systems have a profound effect on our health and happiness. I also learned how we ‘share energy’. You may notice when you walk in a room, if someone is upset or frazzled, you can feel like something is ‘off ’. Simply because someones energy is not in balance, it can still affect you. This energy actually travels; to family members, friends and even strangers. You have also probably noticed when you are around someone who feels good, happy and balanced, it feels good to be around them. By knowing how our energy affects others and learning to keep it in check, not only do our children feel better, our family, colleagues and everyone we come into contact with can also benefit. Just by taking a few extra minutes to balance our system, we are simply making an effort to help everyone around us have a better day. What a beautiful example to set for your children and others! Skeletal Strength Improves Overall Health
The skeletal system is the foundation for your body and provides more than just strength and protection. It is arguably one of the most critical systems of the human body, and by implementing a strategy to care for and strengthen it, many experience the following results:
Loading. Dr. Jaquish has been a frequent speaker at the World Congress on Osteoporosis and is on the board of American Bone Health. His contributions to the OsteoStrong brand have been invaluable in bringing this technology to the world.
Improved Athletic Performance Improved Bone Density Improved Posture Improved Balance Less Joint and Back Pain
Research shows that the stimulus required to trigger osteogenesis (growth of healthy bone tissue) is 4.2 multiples of body weight (4.2 MOB). Achieving that level of stimulus would be difficult for many without the Spectrum System. However, OsteoStrong members easily, safely and without injury or pain, achieve forces in excess of 5 to 12 times their own body weight. High-impact is one of the most powerful stimuli the musculoskeletal system can experience. The scientific research shows that the results are available to people of all ages and fitness levels.
OsteoStrong is a unique place where you can go to improve your overall health by focusing on the one thing we all have in common: a skeletal system. It works for people of all ages and levels of activity to promote skeletal strength which impacts the entire body in many ways using a process known as Osteogenic Loading. Sessions are quick, painless, and the results are measurable and happen quickly. OsteoStrong’s Spectrum system was invented by the Father of Osteogenic Loading, Dr. John Jaquish, Ph.D. Dr. Jaquish is the Chief Science Advisor for OsteoStrong and author of Osteogenic
Spectrum consists of 4 separate devices. Under the supervision of a trained technician, each Spectrum device allows individual members to experience the precise level of force for their musculoskeletal system. Members only need to experience brief levels of force

to get the benefits. The entire circuit only takes few minutes to complete and once the stimulus has been experienced, the central nervous system can trigger osteogenesis.
Improved Athletic Performance OsteoStrong technology has been shown to trigger bone density growth, but why does this matter to an athlete? Other than protection from fractures, skeletal strengthening in many cases eliminates limitations to plateaus and muscle growth. As many have seen with OsteoStrong, bone density can be brought to levels more than two standard deviations above what is considered to be normal. This means your body has a more powerful frame, will allow more muscular engagement and thereby more muscular strength and power. Missouri’s first OsteoStrong facility is now open in Creve Coeur at 12333 Olive Blvd. A 2nd facility is opening in O’Fallon, MO this Fall. To experience this profound system for FREE, CALL OsteoStrong today and request 2 FREE sessions! 314-300-6902 or go to: www.OsteoStong.ME

Make Life Work for You
By Jill Dunlap
Make life work for you, by choosing to make your health and wellbeing a priority. Whether you’re single, married, a working mom or retired, today’s fast paced lifestyle can present a challenge to remaining strong in body, mind and spirit. Juggling responsibilities that consume the day allow little time for preserving and maintaining our health. CNN recently reported Americans spend as much as 10 hours a day on screen time alone. Therefore, approximately half of our day is spent either on our computer, smartphone or in front of the television. The good news is that this is an area where we can take control and use our time in a more productive and physically active way. I believe yoga provides that opportunity. As stated in an AARP article on Alternative Medicine/ Health Benefits of Yoga, a Yoga Journal study found the following trend: That same article stated researchers have found that the benefits of yoga include reduced incidence of chronic back pain, improved sleep quality and mood, a better sense of well-being and quality of life in addition to other lifestyle improvements.
“14 million Americans say that a doctor or therapist recommended yoga to them.”

The first step towards preserving our health is to take responsibility and recognize the areas we can control and improve. Reducing your screen time by just three hours a week would allow that time to be used to the practice of yoga would provide a healthier alternative. As a yoga studio owner and teacher I empower my students through the practice of yoga to achieve the following objectives: • Increased control of the body while improving flexibility, strength and balance. • The ability to quiet the monkey mind and achieve a peaceful state of mind through meditation. • Encouragement to trust your instincts (your spirit within), to guide you through life’s difficult times. Jill Dunlap is a yoga teacher and the owner of Wildwood Yoga & Wellness located at 17237 New College Ave. in Wildwood, MO. Success with Support By April Porter, Owner 9 Round STL
Success involves pain. For success in fitness, the pain may be physical soreness after a workout, avoiding overindulgence on a night out, getting up early to fit in a workout, or looking inward and learning some hard truths about yourself. The difference between those that are successful in fitness and those that are not boils down to who can push past the pain to feel the elation of success. The reality is, anyone can push past the pain, most just need a little help in doing so, which is why working out with a trainer is the most effective way to achieve lasting results. Think about it. Even professional athletes, who have an internal drive to triumph, use a trainer to power through the day-to-day reps it takes to reach their ultimate goals. If those getting paid millions of dollars to stay in shape need a knowledgeable guide to design their workouts and motivate them, why should the average person be expected to do it on their own? The difficult part for the average person is the high cost of personal attention, which is why 9Round 30 Minute Kickbox Fitness was founded. 9Round provides a trainer with every workout, motivating, guiding and tailoring the daily workout to the client’s individual needs. 9Round also eliminated class times, allowing clients to pop into the gym at their convenience, as trainers start a new workout every 3 minutes. The assistance of a trainer makes a workout much more efficient. 9Round clients achieve the optimal intensity and calorie burn in just 30 minutes, rather than wasting an hour at the gym each day.

Sweet Peace Yoga
Settles Into Their New
Home, Sweet Home By Melody Meiners

S
tepping through the bright blue doors of Sweet Peace Yoga’s new home in downtown Kirkwood, you can immediately appreciate that this studio is special. From the welcoming foyer and grand mirror that greets you at the top the staircase, inherited from this historic home’s time as Cafe Victorian to the beautifully painted, light-filled rooms, there is tranquil, uplifting feel that fills the studio’s new 142 West Monroe address.
“I thought we could add a juice bar, a coffee shop, a massage therapist, and even music lessons.”
‘Sweet Peace is committed to providing a supportive, enriching, and unintimidating environment for people of all ages and abilities...’ Sweet Peace Yoga’s new studio is in the historic Hoffman-Ward House. (Built in the 1880’s as a wedding gift for Elizabeth Hoffman and her husband, steamboat captain Thomas Ward, Hoffman-Ward is one of the quintessential homes that lend Kirkwood its historic character. Since a 1975 restoration, the Hoffman-Ward House has been home to a locally-owned restaurant, craft boutique, and antique store.) Sweet Peace now shares the building with an equally health-minded bicycle and pedestrian trail planning firm. In a delightful, serendipitous twist the shared sign in the front yard is underscored by the tagline, “creating active communities.” When trying to find a new home for the studio, Sweet Peace Yoga’s owner, Liz Roodman, was determined to find a place that reflected Sweet Peace’s philosophy and mission. Sweet Peace is committed to providing a supportive, enriching, and unintimidating environment for people of all ages and abilities, from the curious beginner to athletes and future yoga teachers, and from expectant to retired mothers and men. After nearly a decade sharing space with Kirkwood Music Institute, just up the stairs from Sweet Peace’s namesake the Sugar Shack, the studio explored a few options including commercial space adjacent to a sandwich shop and shared space with a real estate company, and but none quite fit. When Liz drove by the historic Hoffman-Ward House and saw it was for lease, she knew the space was as perfect as it was beautiful. Located only two blocks from Sweet Peace’s original studio, the home’s elegant Italianate design radiated peace and strength. However, Liz was disappointed to find the space was too large and the landlord was not interested in dividing the building. To make it work, Liz considered expanding the studio’s business to include other offerings,
(Pictured above:) Almost 136 years after it was designed as a nod to Ward’s work as a steamboat captain, this porthole window is now the perfect location for the Sweet peace logo.
While diversification would have made full use of the space, a major expansion would have changed the warm, intimate feel that defines Sweet Peace. Liz was also committed to keeping prices affordable, so she opted to continue working until she found the right solution. Not long after the landlord contacted Liz with the news he planned to divide the space, Sweet Peace was settling into their perfect, new home where they could continue their mission of providing a cozy, tranquil practice space for their clientele. Liz explained, “What makes Sweet Peace unique is that it’s an enriching and warm environment where you feel as if you are practicing yoga with friends in the comfort of your home.” About the Author: Melody Meiners is a freelancer writer and ghostwriter who lives and works in Kirkwood, MO. She has written features articles for local magazines, served as a ghostwriter on business, memoir and historical books, and is a lecturer and continuing education instructor in the writing and literature programs for St. Louis Community College’s Continuing Education program. Combination Therapy as published in Aesthetics Journal: There are many factors that contribute to aging of the face. Whether it’s loss of volume, lines and wrinkles, sagging, heavy jowls, or a declining skin condition, the numerous signs of aging often have different causes. As such,
when treating the aging face, one treatment or procedure rarely addresses all aesthetic concerns. Most experts agree that whichever part of the face, body, or whatever aesthetic concern, the optimum line of defense is to combine a number of treatments to achieve the best results. According to practitioners interviewed for this article, when deciding which combination(s) to use to treat a particular patient, the most important element is to interpret the patient’s concerns and determine the underlying problem. “What a patient sees is the end result of various factors, and it’s our job to ascertain what those factors are and to treat them accordingly,” comments Dr Elisabeth Dancey from the Bijoux Medi-Spa. “For example, a patient might say, ‘I look tired.’ The reason is that their face has lost some volume, they’ve lost the support of the tissues, they’ve lost the roundness, and they’ve lost the way the
light reflects on their face – as a consequence, they look tired. So the treatment would be to replace that volume with fillers, for example. Or patients may say, ‘I’ve got a saggy jaw line,’ and, again, that’s the end result of many things, including volume loss and skin laxity. My choice of treatments takes that into consideration.” This is the exact mentality Eternity Med Spa uses to treat their clients. This is why their clients trust them completely.

Healthy Women
Thrive
Through Feminine Movement The concept of “Feminine Movement” goes beyond women’s fitness, nurturing not only the female body, but also her mind and soul. Only one unique studio in the St. Louis area – Sacred Movement in St. Charles – offers a one-of-a-kind curriculum and special events to provide this holistic approach for women who are seeking something more than a typical yoga or dance class. “Our mission at Sacred Movement is to hold space for women to remember their wild feminine nature, to facilitate self-healing through movement and to build an empowered and conscious community of women and girls,” says studio owner Jenn Kasper. A lifelong dancer herself, Jenn has trained and achieved certifications in multiple disciplines over the last two decades, and personally teaches many of the classes at Sacred Movement.

enn’s main goal is to encourage women to live in the space of the sacred feminine and not become consumed by toxic messaging that can promote body shame.
“When women feel removed from their bodies, they live inside their minds and become disconnected from their emotions,” Jenn says. “The best way to heal this is to physically reconnect with our bodies. When we invite our mind to listen to what our body is saying, it strengthens our intuition. This is what makes us stronger and more confident, and rekindles our sparkle.” Sacred Movement provides many different styles of movement classes for women such as S Factor’s® Fluid Feminine Movement®, American Tribal Style® Belly Dance, Qoya and Vinyasa flow yoga. All of the classes taught at Sacred Movement highlight three distinct feminine characteristics – flow, connection with one’s breath, and rounder, more circular bodily movements. Most importantly, every class is designed for women of all ages (16+), body types and abilities.
“Every class at Sacred Movement focuses on moving the parts of a woman’s body in the way they were designed for her to move,” Jenn says. “It’s all about how it feels, not how it looks. So if it feels good, then you are doing it right!” The studio also hosts a variety of special events, including monthly Red Tent gatherings, mind-body workshops and Sacred SEEDs, a mentoring and empowerment program for girls ages 10-15. The studio can also be rented for private dance lessons like “Shimmy Showers” or for a fun and memorable girls’ night out or for a customized, sensual bachelorette party. “Sacred Movement’s curriculum helps women shift their perspective,” Jenn says. “These are no-kidding workouts, but they will make you feel like you’ve spent a day at the spa. Our goal is to for women to leave relaxed, rejuvenated and energized, but also feeling openheartedly feminine, clear-minded and completely re-centered.
American Tribal Style ® Belly Dance: ®®
ATS® is a beautiful dance form that teaches women to tune into the voice of their feminine bodies, while communicating with others through the ancient art of belly dance. No prior dance experience is necessary, as these fun classes celebrate the female form in all of her beautiful shapes, sizes and abilities. Sacred Movement’s ATS® classes create a visual conversation that is as powerful to watch as it is to create.
Fluid Feminine Movement : ®
FFM by S Factor® is a sensual workout for body and soul that is intelligently designed to open the female body into full, free expression. It strengthens and elongates the body through movements specifically designed for women. FFM builds muscle and strength where the feminine body asks for them – while acknowledging the unique rounded curves that women naturally embody. The studio is intentionally darkened to give each woman in class a feeling of privacy and safety so they focus on how they feel, not how they look. ®
Vinyasa Flow Yoga:
Open to all levels of experience, this yoga class is designed to mindfully move the feminine body with the pace of her breath. The class ranges from gentle to moderate flows where heartopening breath work and postures are synchronized to music. While attuning to the sensations that arise within your own body, the habitual ways of moving and thinking can be acknowledged and released. With focused intention and relaxation, women gain a feeling of openness allowing an expanded experience of self-realization.
Qoya:
Qoya is based on the simple idea that through movement, women remember. The freestyle movements in this class help women remember the core essence that they are wise, wild and free. This class brings forth wisdom from yoga, wildness from creative dance and the freedom to expand a woman’s capacity for sensual pleasure.

(including your brain!) Typically, when we think about being “fit”, we think about our physical fitness— exercising to burn fat and build muscle and paying attention to what we’re eating. While exercise and nutrition are highly important to overall health, this fall make it a point to focus on your brain fitness. Why is brain fitness important? Here’s the facts: Alzheimer’s and Dementia are on the rise. As of 2017, the Alzheimer’s Association stated that Alzheimer’s kills more than Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer combined. Two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are female, and in her 6th decade, her risk is 1 in 6 for developing the disease. It’s time to talk solutions. As a whole, we’re very well aware of the connection between a deficient body and disease. But do we know how to prevent or reverse the damage to our body? The secret to being Brain Fit lies within the 5 Essentials to Health. Keeping these five areas of our lifestyle in check, will prove to not only prevent cognitive decline, but they can reverse the brain fog. First is our Mindset and how we let stress affect us. During stressful situations our bodies produce hormones that, when released in excess, can overload our brain and kill brain cells. Second is our Nervous System which, when protected well by the spinal column, is solely responsible for orchestrating the repair of our brain. The third essential is Nutrition, eating real food and avoiding neurotoxins like MSG will prevent toxic brain overload and damage. Fourth, is proper Exercise. Simply moving our bodies more will increase endorphins and deliver oxygen to our brain. Exercise is the single best activity we can do for our brains. It helps regenerate cells and reduces oxidative damage caused by stress. And lastly, monitoring our exposure to toxins and heavy metals that drown our brain and choke it’s normal function. Being Brain Fit is an around-the-clock job that’s worth it. Our bodies are highly functioning systems that are designed to take care of us for 80-100 years – so treat it well with the 5 Essentials to Healthy Living! Beat the Bloat
Feel Your Best
What does it mean to be a healthy woman? You’ve probably heard a million different tips...how do you know what is actually true? When I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, I had to put aside what I’d been told for years and learn what healthy looked like for me. I don’t count calories. I don’t diet. Instead, I look at clean eating as a lifestyle. Because of my RA, I avoid foods that cause inflammation in my body to reduce my pain. I do this by staying away from refined carbs, sugar, dairy and irritating grains. Just because I avoid foods, it doesn’t mean I’m deprived of delish dishes. I do food coaching and meal planning as part of my business, klean&lean, so I’m constantly trying new recipes for me, my family and my clients.
You can start by changing just a few ingredients to make a recipe “klean”. One of my favorite ways to “klean” up a recipe is swapping a veggie in place of a carb. For example, cauliflower makes a great substitute for rice, pizza crust or mashed potatoes! You can also use zucchini in place of noodles in lasagna and spaghetti. Swapping veggies for carbs fills me up without the bloat!

Staying away from these inflammatory foods not only helps me look my best (again, no bloat!) it helps me feel my best. I have more energy now than I did ten years ago. To me, being healthy means having tons of energy to sweat once a day and keep up with my two girls!

Don’t Be “P.I.G. - Headed” in Conversations With Your Partner Dr. Patt Hollinger Pickett, LMFT, PhD
The term “pig-headed” is offensive but I want to draw attention to common practices which can ultimately slaughter a couple’s ability to communicate. When loving partners carelessly trample each other with rudeness and stubbornness, their communication deteriorates. As your communication ability deteriorates, so does your relationship. P.I.G. is an acronym for three disruptive habits: predicting, insisting, and guessing. Each habit creates P.I.G headed conversations. There is no place for these bad behaviors in a couple’s communication. Here’s what “P.I.G. - headed” sounds like. PREDICTING: You “think” you know what he’s going to say so you either tune him out or abruptly cut him off. This is a horrible habit even if you may be or are often “right”. Interrupting and tuning out are rude and reduce the quality of interactive communication. With a less “chatty” spouse, you may also discourage him from becoming more talkative. Couple communication is mutually influenced by the instinctive patterns of “short” and “long” talkers. I expand on this topic through various couple’s stories in my book, The Marriage Whisperer. INSISTING: You “are sure” you know what your partner means by his words better than he does.
This is a terrible move even if you think you know him well. You do not “get” to tell your partner what he means or how he feels; only what you understand. Eventually, he may conclude, “What’s the use of sharing my thoughts or feelings when she doesn’t listen and tells me they are wrong anyway?” GUESSING: When you are not particularly clear on what he said, you guess what he means. You do not clarify.

Instead, you hold an “imaginary conversation in your head” with him (he’d probably say this and then he’d get irritated, and then carry on with blah, blah, blah). So to “save time” and “eggshells”, you give a short-cut response without even hearing what he’d actually say. Whether you are an equal P.I.G. - headed participant or alone on either side, you can avoid these muddy conversations with your partner. Always maintain awareness to insure courtesy and open-mindedness in every communication. he toughest workout in town. The ultimate destressor. The fountain of youth. These are just a few of the many ways long-time students describe yoga at Pure Hot Yoga St. Louis.
“When you are doing the same poses repeatedly, you are able to see where you are today in relation to yesterday. It allows you to tune in to those subtle changes in your body.” Erin explains.
“The beauty of this style of yoga is that all ages, shapes, and ability levels can practice in the same class together and receive the benefits,” co-owner Carol Stocks says. “If you are willing to take the challenge and put in the work,“ she says, “the benefits are limitless. There is nothing else like it.” When Erin Stack and Carol Stocks first opened their bikram method studio at 6630 Clayton Rd in 2003, they were on the cusp of this “new” workout that a lot of people were not familiar with. “We had to explain to a lot of people what yoga even was.” says Erin. “And then the looks we would get when we said that the room is heated to 105 degrees…well, we still get those looks sometimes.”
e Hot oga:
n of the mind, spirit.
While “new” to St. Louis, this style of yoga has been around since the ‘70s with its roots in asanas (postures) from the Ghosh lineage, which dates back much further. Pure Hot Yoga offers the truest form of hot yoga.
The series of 26 poses and 2 breathing exercises is taught in the same order every class and is designed to open up joints while balancing muscular alignment and improving the body’s biomechanics. One of the benefits to their particular studio is that the routine is repetitive.
As for the heat, they say it reduces the risk of injuries and allows you to stretch further in comfort. Recently, they have seen an influx of men in the 35-50+ age range who have tried everything else to stay in shape but have those nagging injuries, back, knee, etc., that they just can’t shake through traditional workouts. They come to the hot yoga class and are hooked not only for the healing benefits but also for the strength and endurance that allows them to continue the other activities that they love. “The beauty is that it’s never too late to start,” Carol says. “You have to take responsibility for your body and put the work in, but you can help to heal yourself.” Both women say they still feel like they are in their 20’s (despite the fact that they are twice that age) and love the community they have created. “We love getting to know our students on a more personal level. Our students trust us to lead them through this journey, and we take that very seriously,“ Carol says. “The yoga definitely helps us continue to feel young,” Erin adds. “We have found that the students who started with us so many years ago honestly look exactly the same or better than they did when they began!” While we all have gone through injuries and ailments, this yoga is always part of our healing process. I can’t imagine my life without it.” Erin says. YogaStLouis.com {hot yoga} 314.644.2226 {cool people} 6630 Clayton Rd.

Healthy Hormones By Dr. Seth Gerlach
When is the last time you thought about your hormones? For some it may be years, for others, it may be minutes! Whether it is pre-menopause, post-menopause, pregnancy, or puberty, having healthy and balanced hormones is one major key to good health. Did you know that different organs in your body help regulate your hormones? And did you know that lifestyle factors (the things you do every day) have an enormous impact on your hormones? There are many different kinds of hormones in the body, like cortisol: the stress hormone which keeps us going until we de-stress. Another hormone is DHEA: which helps build and maintain the body, and insulin: which regulates blood sugar. All these hormones can impact one another and can control many functions in the body like: mood, immune health, digestion, libido, brain function, thyroid function and so much more.
Guide to Healthy Hormones: ✦ Fix the Gut. Yes, the gut! The majority of inflammation begins in the gut, and can lead to hormonal imbalances. Not only that, the bacteria in our gut determine many processes in the body, such as immune regulation, mood, blood sugar regulation, thyroid hormone conversion, and weight stability.
✦ Good Liver, Good Hormones. The liver is a busy organ. It is the main detoxification organ, responsible for balancing blood sugar, aiding in digestion, and also the correct disposal of hormones. When hormones are not broken down and gotten rid of, they build up, causing severe imbalances.

✦ Give the Adrenals a Break. When we are chronically stressed through emotions, diet, toxins and infections, the adrenals have to work overtime in order to keep the body functioning. After too long, it becomes almost impossible to maintain balance, and the body begins to break down. Unhealthy adrenals can cause immune depression, hormone imbalances, mood swings, and much more. If you would like guidance with balancing hormones or attaining true, lasting health, we at Core Health would love to help walk you through that process. Seeing the Vision
The single most rewarding aspect of my job is that every day I have an opportunity to make a positive impact in people’s lives by changing the way they see the world around them. It’s always a joyous moment when our laser eye surgery patients can shed their contacts and glasses, but for some patients, the experience is incredibly moving — for both of us.
48 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017
Recently, a patient named Angie came into our office. For 40 years, she’d struggled with her vision. Without her glasses, she couldn’t even read the big “E” on the eye chart. Angie told me the story of how, when her daughters were younger, she would dress them in neon swimming suits when they went swimming. It wasn’t to be fashionable; without her contacts or glasses, neither of which she could wear in the water, she couldn’t tell which children were hers if they wore anything different. Several months ago, she and her husband decided to make laser vision correction a priority. They saved up and made an appointment with another St. Louis LASIK provider and made the three-hour drive from her southern Missouri home to come for their consult. I could feel the excitement and hope Angie must have had that day of her first LASIK exam as she shared her story with me. Then I felt her heartbreak as she told me how devastated she had been to learn that her corneas were too thin and her vision too impaired to undergo LASIK. Angie doesn’t strike me as someone who cries easily, but tears streamed down her face that day as she climbed back into her car for the long ride home. Angie left her eye doctor that day with new resolve. She was not content to take “no” for an answer. She got online and found Brinton Vision, then called to make her appointment. To Angie, we represented the last thread of hope that she had to be able to see the faces of her children and husband without being shackled by glasses or contacts. Angie’s story is not unusual. Every week I see patients who have been told by other doctors that they are not candidates for LASIK. When these patients do their homework, they realize that LASIK is only one of seven refractive procedures available. Other options — ASA, Raindrop inlay, Kamra inlay, RLE, Visian ICL, and SMILE — may, and often do work for them when LASIK does not. The problem is that these procedures involve significant investment in training and equipment by the surgeons who perform them — which is why not many do. My personal philosophy is that my patients’ vision is worth the investment.
I followed in my grandfather’s and my father’s footsteps when I chose to go into ophthalmology, and was taught early on that, whatever I did with my life and my career, I have an obligation to do it well. To that end, I’ve spent many years making sure I prepared to serve as best I could. Patients often tell me that those efforts and those ideals are evident when they walk into Brinton Vision. I take great pride in being the only full-time, dedicated refractive surgeon in Missouri to have the technology, expertise, and experience to perform LASIK and all six of its modern variations. At the same time, I’m humbled by the thought that the things my staff and I accomplish each day affect people in profound ways. For Angie, ICL surgery was, in her words, “life-changing.” Within 15 minutes, years of struggling to see were replaced with nothing shy of sheer joy. She now has better than 20/20 vision without glasses or contacts. I cannot find the words to adequately describe how elated she was in the moments afterward — or the feeling of deep fulfillment that her success gives me and the 12 members of my staff. I am inspired by patients like her. Her journey to visual freedom has been hard-fought, and she refused to give up. Purpose is the most effective force in the world, and smiles are the greatest reward. Stories like Angie’s renew my passion for my career every day, and fill me with gratitude for the opportunity I have to live a life filled with purpose. St. Louis LASIK surgeon Dr. Jason P. Brinton, MD is a internationally recognized specialist in the field of refractive surgery. He is a graduate of Harvard College, earned his medical doctorate from the Harvard Medical School, and is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has been inducted to America’s Top Ophthalmologists by the Consumer Research Council of America, Leading Physicians of the World by the International Association of Healthcare Professionals, and Top Doctors in America by Castle Connolly. In 2015, he received global recognition as the recipient of the Visian ICL Young Ophthalmologist Award in Barcelona, Spain, and in 2016 was named Ocular Surgery News’ Premier Surgeon 300 Innovators in Refractive Cataract Surgery. In 2017, he was named in Top Doctors in St. Louis. He is a dedicated husband, father of four beautiful children, and is passionate about his life, his work, and service to others.

Healthy Living through Medical Astrology By Dr. Gail Cloud
There is nothing better than feeling good and being healthy. When we are young we often take it for granted. When we are older we often talk about wishing we were healthy. Our health can be a limiting factor in our lives; or not.
Drink Juice. Feel Amazing.
I have a new tool in my toolbox of health called Medical Astrology. I am a Chiropractic physician, an astrologer, and a family systems facilitator. I am all about health and what we can do to live in health. Medical astrology is a way of looking at our genetic blueprint: the dynamic blueprint of our birth which is our natal astrology chart, and the dynamics of change around us, and who and what we are influenced by today. Each planet is representative of a person within us. We can see what we are genetically predisposed to, see what might be influencing us and our health in the present, and develop ideas and protocols of how to work with these influences so we can be whole and healthy. Our healthcare system is not developed around prevention but around a crisis. Medical astrology is all about learning about ourselves, seeing our possible weaknesses, and then developing ways to make us stronger. Chiropractic helps us to realign our neuromuscular system, to learn the voices of our body, and to give helpful intervention towards our health. Let’s get healthy. Embarrassed When You Cough, Laugh or Sneeze?
Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) happens when physical movement or activity— such as coughing, sneezing, running or heavy lifting — puts pressure (stress) on your bladder, causing the unintentional loss of urine. It isn't related to psychological stress and also differs from urge urinary incontinence (UUI), which is the unintentional loss of urine caused by the bladder muscle contracting, usually associated with a sense of urgency. Stress incontinence is much more common in women than men. If you have stress incontinence, you may feel embarrassed, isolate yourself, or limit your work and social life, especially exercise and leisure activities. Enter Geneveve™ by Viveve! Geneveve™ is a safe, non-surgical approach for revitalizing vaginal tissue. Just like skin, vaginal tissue can become loose or ‘lax’ over time from childbirth, hormone
deficiency or pelvic surgeries. Vaginal laxity leads to issues with sexual sensation, lubrication and urinary incontinence, which can impact a woman’s overall sense of wellbeing. Clinical studies have shown that during the Geneveve™ treatment, the natural formation of younger, more supportive collagen is activated, which gradually, over the subsequent three to six months, strengthens and revitalizes the area. The Centre for Vibrant Health and Wellness (www.drsalter.com) is the first in the St. Louis area to offer the new Geneveve™ treatment.

Healthy Eating Beyond “Natural” and “Organic” As the society continues to adopt a healthier diet, consumers are paying more and more attention to their food sources and the environmental impact of food products. Over the last few decades, research has demonstrated the harm of processed food, especially preserved meat products, to our overall health. We have learned that highly refined grains are less nutritious and more likely to cause diabetes than their natural counterparts. People have also rightfully questioned about what all the pesticides, fertilizers, and growth hormones could do to human bodies. Therefore, eating more natural and organically grown foods is a great start for us to take control of our own food choices. However, would it be enough? The answer then becomes a bit complicated.
It is very important to point out that being natural or organic does not equate healthy and nutritious. As we look carefully at the back labels of many cold press juices and plant based protein shakes, we are surprised to see many of these products actually contain high level of added sugar, some of which are as high as regular Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Some others are high in saturated fat which should have been avoided as much as possible. Keep in mind, all added sugars are the same regardless the source; each gram of saturated fat is equally harmful, doesn’t matter whether it is from butter or
from coconut. When we consume natural and organic products, we should not lose sight on the nutritional fact of each product before we buy them.
Being natural or organic does not equate healthy and nutritious... many products actually contain high level of added sugar... So, what consumers should focus on? Here are a few try and true tips when it comes to healthy diet:
1. Control your total daily calorie count and follow a diet with balanced nutritional composition. Time and time again, research has demonstrated the importance of low calorie diet in weight control and overall health. Focusing on high protein content without curbing calorie intake is misleading and counterproductive as the excessive protein will eventually be converted into sugar and fat. 2. Focus on eating more whole plant based foods. More and more evidences have pointed towards the benefits of plant foods over meat products. As we consume more grains and nuts, we should understand that the reason that makes plant based foods healthy and nutritious is because of the superior nutritional composition of
the whole plants. For example, almond is healthy only when you eat its entirety. Picking it apart and turning into almond milk, you not only lose 95% of its nutrients, but also end up with a low quality protein that lacks several essential amino acids. That is part of the reason why protein extracting is not only wasteful, but also scientifically flawed. 3. Avoid saturated fat and added or refined sugar as much as possible. Both have been unequivocally proven to be harmful in causing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. They are equally detrimental to our health whether they are from meat and potatoes or from fruits and nuts.
As we try to make healthier food choices for ourselves and our families, more attention is needed to look past the “natural” and “organic” and focus more on the calorie count, sugar level and fat content. Navigating Breast Cancer Treatments Options As a full-time nurse practitioner, wife and busy mom of twin 7year-old boys, Amy Eberhardt has a lot going on in her life. So she wasn’t entirely surprised when she forgot to schedule her annual mammogram around her 42nd birthday. Eberhardt, who is admittedly positive about what life hands her and always has a warm smile on her face, was sure she had nothing to worry about. She figured she’d just carry on taking care of everyone in her life, including the breast cancer patients she works with every day. “I knew I was late in getting my mammogram, but I wasn’t having any problems,” said Eberhardt, WHNP, who with G. Paul Yazdi, MD, a breast surgical oncologist, and make up the breast care team for Breast Care Consultants at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. They care for patients with both cancerous and non-cancerous diseases of the breast, with a particular emphasis on acute breast problems such as highrisk lesions, breast cancer and genetic mutations. “I went in for my screening mammogram in June and, about a week later, was told the radiologist wanted to talk to me,” she said. “I thought she wanted to discuss a patient, but she wanted to discuss my results.”
Although they could not see the lump with the traditional 2D screening mammogram, she opted to have the newer 3D mammogram with tomosynthesis; that showed she was now facing something she has discussed with hundreds of patients throughout her career — a new diagnosis of breast cancer.
Facing her own diagnosis “I had an ultrasound on a Friday, and I knew it was cancer, but nobody wanted to tell me,” said Eberhardt, who started her own career at Missouri Baptist as the first breast health nurse navigator for the Breast HealthCare Center. In this role, she would have to tell patients about their breast cancer diagnosis and help them navigate their treatment. After undergoing both an ultrasound and MRI, it was determined that Eberhardt’s cancer could be anywhere from 7 mm up to 6 cm with the possible spread of the cancer to her lymph node. She would have to wait for surgery to know the extent and stage of her breast cancer. Although there was some uncertainty about the size of her tumor, it was ultimately diagnosed as ductal carcinoma in situ or DCIS. DCIS is when breast cancer cells are contained within the milk ducts of the breast.
54 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017
Her cancer was 2.5 cm and the lymph node showed no evidence of cancer. Even though she has no family history of breast cancer, Eberhardt did undergo genetic testing and there was no genetic mutation identified. “By the grace of God, I had Stage 0 breast cancer. I could have had a very different experience,” she said. “I was definitely shocked when I got my diagnosis. I’ve been attending our breast tumor conference every week for years with our team and working alongside Dr. Yazdi as he cares for his patients. Now, I am one of his patients.” In fact, the day she was diagnosed, Eberhardt called a woman who was about her same age to tell her she had breast cancer. The woman even asked Eberhardt to call her boyfriend for her because she wasn’t sure how to tell him. “Dr. Yazdi asked, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’” she recalled. “I said yes because I love talking to patients. I loved it then and I love it now.”
Committing to a treatment plan Due to her diagnosis, Eberhardt’s course of treatment meant she would undergo surgery to remove the cancer. There was a small chance she would only need surgery as her treatment. She would have to wait for her results from
‘They could not see the lump with the traditional 2D screening mammogram, she opted to have the newer 3D mammogram with tomosynthesis; that showed she was now facing ... a new diagnosis of breast cancer.’ her surgery to know if her treatment would require any medications, chemotherapy or radiation. Based on her own research and nursing experience, she chose to undergo a newer procedure known as a bilateral nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. Although most Stage 0 patients are recommended to have lumpectomy and radiation or the removal of just one breast, due to the size uncertainty and low-grade nature of her breast cancer, she felt this was the best course of treatment for her personally. She prayed and hoped that her pathology would only reveal DCIS and not a more advanced cancer. “Patients have always asked me, ‘If you were being treated or it was your mom, what would you recommend?’” she said. “I honestly never thought I would want reconstruction surgery, but
now here I am, and I believe I made the right decision for myself.” Although Dr. Yazdi said he would understand if she chose another surgeon, Eberhardt said there was no question that he would be her surgeon. “I told him it has to be you, and I’m happy it has to be you,” she said. “I’ve always told patients they are in the right place and they would receive the best care. I believe that and I had that.”
Recovery with a new perspective As she continues to navigate her own experience with breast cancer, Eberhardt said she has a new perspective, which she is happy to share with those patients who may be feeling particularly anxious. “Breast cancer treatment is so individual and personal. What works
for one person might not be right for another,” she said. “Hopefully, I’ve become more empathetic and sympathetic toward my patients. I know that you will be well taken care of here at Missouri Baptist, no matter what, because we have a really good team. “Being a patient here allowed me to experience the world-class care we tell others about. Everybody was supportive, and they just really care. I was blessed with support in all of my roles as navigator, a nurse practitioner, as a patient and now as a survivor. I don’t say that because I was a provider but because I know they treat patients like myself wonderfully,” she said. To schedule a screening or diagnostic mammogram, call 314-996-5170. PROBLEMS If you are dealing with a Thyroid problem, there is a big chance that it is coming from Hashimoto’s Thyroditis. The most important thing to understand is that Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease, not a thyroid disease. The problem is the immune attack on the thyroid. The immune system has turned against the thyroid gland and is slowly attacking and killing it. This is why Hashimotos sufferers can go through bouts of Hyperthyroidism and Hypothryoidism. As the destruction of the thyroid continues, the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 spill out into the blood stream. This is what causes the fluctuating hyperthyroid and hypothryoid symptoms. This is also why many sufferers have lab results (T4) that will fluctuate from high to low. In most cases, Hashimoto’s has a genetic component. This means that Hashimoto’s sufferer’s are born with the genes that make them susceptible, but at some point the genes “turn on” and the process of tissue destruction begins. The question becomes, what were the mechanisms that turned on the genes? These factors are often related to diet, lifestyle, metabolism, and sources of stress. With a functional approach to Hashimoto’s, the goal is to dig deep and find these sources of stress, and modify them so that the immune system can calm down, thus decreasing the collateral damage to the thyroid and other tissues. We don’t have an “off” switch for Hashimoto’s. We can’t simply flip the switch and turn the disease “off.” We DO however have a “dimmer” switch. The goal is to systematically detect and remove immune triggers and properly support the proper branch of the immune system. We can naturally balance, calm, and modulate the immune system with the aid of advanced immune panels and all-natural protocols and lifestyle modifications. If you would like to learn more about these natural approaches, please join us on September 21st @ 6:30 for a Free Thyroid Health Seminar. This will be held at 2001 S. Hanley Rd, Suite, 220 in Brentwood, MO. Call 314-646-0013 to RSVP! You can also visit www.StLouisThyroidSupport.com

A New Hope for Patients Diagnosed with Depression For those who have unsuccessfully battled depression while being treated with prescribed medications, CenterPointe Hospital offers hope in a noninvasive, advanced technology that may provide relief for individuals whose depression has not yet been effectively treated. TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain and improve symptoms of depression. As an area leader in behavioral health treatments and services, CenterPointe Hospital provides TMS therapy to its continuum of treatment options for depression. The FDA-approved therapy is designed to help depressed individuals who have not achieved relief thru pharmacotherapy return to their routine activities and feel like themselves again. In some cases, individuals achieve full remission from their symptoms. TMS therapy targets the area of the brain rendered under active by depression. Highly focused magnetic pulses pass painlessly through the skull and into the brain, non-invasively stimulating the target area.
The technology used in TMS therapy is similar to MRI and has a long, documented history supporting its safety and use. During the four-to six-week treatment course, patients receive daily outpatient care in the comfort of a physician’s office, where each treatment lasts approximately 40 minutes. During therapy, the individual is alert and able to resume normal activities immediately afterward. TMS Therapy is covered by most commercial insurance plans and Medicare. Breast cancer accounts for 25% of all new cancer cases diagnosed in 2012. It is the most common cancer among women. Breast cancer is disease sustained by interconnected and intricate signaling pathways. Diverse genetic and epigenetic changes are crucial to this cancer. Thus, aiming one gene product or cell signaling pathway is unlikely to prevent or treat breast cancer. The current options for breast cancer include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapeutic agents. These options are costly and could cause changes to the functions of normal genes. In the mid-eighties, investigations on the effect of curcumin revealed that it could be a potential anticancer agent. Curcumin is a component of turmeric derived from the roots of the plant Curcuma longa. The root of turmeric contains a volatile oil, turmerone. Turmeric gets its bright yellow color from curcuminoids. The curcuminoids interact with inflammatory mediators, tumor growth factors, and enzymes, and other cellular items related to breast cancer. Therapeutic properties of curcumin include anti-oxidant, anti-arthritic, anti-amyloid, anti-ischemic, and antiinflammatory effect. In cancer, Curcumin has been studied to inhibit the growth of various cancer cells without effecting normal cells. In breast cancer, curcumin inhibits cells from reproducing by proliferation and can induce cancer cell death. Curcumin exemplifies a promising natural agent for breast cancer prevention and treatment. Curcumin can impede tumor growth, and the spread of cancer cells. More research and development is needed to enhance the solubility and stability of curcumin. In my practice, I recommend turmeric products containing BCM95. Bioavailability studies of BCM-95 has shown curcumin and curcuminoids to be 7 times more bioavailable than regular turmeric product. The amount of curcumin dose matters as well and should be recommended by your doctor or pharmacist. At Colonial Village Pharmacy, you will find everything you need to optimize your health. We provide personal care that the mass market pharmacies have long ago forgotten. We also provide custom compounded medications, superior supplements and vitamins, a wealth of information, health classes, immunizations, home delivery, and a smile. Empowered Planning By Shawn Marie Levesque
Asset Protection & Trusts Probate Avoidance Wills & Power Of Attorney
On average, women live longer than men, making estate planning a crucial life-affirming priority. When it comes to estate planning, the empowered woman is confident and prepared. She knows what a profound impact this type of planning will make on her life. No matter the overall wealth, everyone has an estate that needs to be protected. An estate is everything that you own when you die, including your home, personal property, investments, bank accounts, retirement plans and any business partnerships.
‘A key aspect in estate planning is being clear with your own needs and speaking your mind’
Women tend to care for others before themselves, but a key aspect in estate planning is being clear with your own needs and speaking your mind. Without planning, state law will determine how your assets are distributed. It’s easy to let the fear of your own mortality get in the way of estate planning, but the reality is that not having a plan can become planning to fail.

Tools for the Financially Empowered Woman By C. Michael Unterreiner
Women hold quite a bit of financial power. Using that power wisely does wonders for women individually as well as for the entire economy. According to marketing firm Interpublic Group, women make about 85 percent of household purchasing decisions, which makes a significant impact on the economy. Women can spend their money with businesses that align with their values, and avoid ones that don’t. Women can be as effective with their portfolios as they are with their spending. Compared to men, women are more likely to have an investment plan and stick with it, which can lead to better results. Still, despite their ability to invest well, women invest less than men. According to a Harris survey, men have saved an average of $115,000 for retirement, while women have saved just $34,000. In general, women contribute less to their 401(k) plans, and are less likely to be confident about their retirement plans. What can you do to feel more financially empowered? You can set concrete goals, not just about how much money you want to have, but what you want to do later in your life (travel, hobbies, etc.). You can then tie your saving and investment planning to those goals. Work with a financial planner, or reliable planning software, to see how you are approaching your goals over time. Our clients have access to the eMoney Advisor online financial organizer. This tool allows women (and men) to set budgets and then track their spending, and to set long-term goals and then track their investments. Clients can view all their accounts on one website, see if they have enough insurance, store important financial documents, and even view educational videos and articles. This powerful online tool allows our clients to see concrete steps towards their long-term goals, which can lead to a sense of empowerment and a commitment to continue that progress. C. Michael Unterreiner, ChFC, founded Financial Legacy Associates to create an environment where financial professionals could serve their clients better by sharing their experiences and ideas. Years spent serving St. Louis customers and honing her design sensibilities taught Kristin to trust her instinct, “I pick things that excite me, that look like nothing else I’ve seen around.” The result is a shop with something for everyone that holds particular appeal for fashion and art lovers, as well as individuals looking for a piece that expresses their personal style. A Portfolio Leading to a Healthy Future
Fine Arts, Antiques & Collectibles
By Dr. Ed Katcher
Over the past few decades, the number of professional women in the workforce has increased significantly, and their entry into the corporate world has reached the highest levels of responsibility and title. While this is good news, we are also presented with new challenges. Specifically, the challenge of retirement, which leaves many women with a feeling of “what now?” Just like men, mature women have the talent and potential to remain productive for years to come and are seeking new challenges and venues. The Hawthorne Study conducted by Western Electric in the late 1920s and early 1930s showed that incentives and identified goals motivate individuals to high levels of performance. This study is still relevant in modern leadership think tanks and universities. Known as the Hawthorne effect, it simply proved that identifying and initiating a goal will result in improvement.

Upon arrival in Miramar Beach, the Newman-Dailey staff gave us a warm welcome for our stay at the “Twin Palms at Avalon” vacation home. Instead of keys, we received a convenient door code for the house. Our spacious vacation home was gorgeous and just a few short blocks from the beach. As we relaxed that first night, I was so excited for the week ahead and our plans for family fun, beach time, a date night… and yoga, fitness, and a massage for Mom! 66 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017
“Our spacious vacation home was gorgeous and just a few short blocks from the beach.”
Yoga and Massage at The Henderson Resort and Salamander Spa Stretch yoga (also offered on the lawn), followed by an outdoor lunch at Primrose and aromatherapy massage at the Salamander Spa, was just what I needed to unwind and rejuvenate. Opened in November 2016, The Henderson Resort is adjacent to a 208-acre environmentally protected state park providing a relaxing setting. With views of the Gulf of Mexico in the distance, the Salamander Spa features 11 exquisite private treatment rooms and a wet area with an experiential shower and whirlpool, tub as well as a luxurious couple’s suite and a full-service salon.
Adventure on the Sea Blaster Sunset Dolphin Cruise Our second evening in Destin, we enjoyed the Sea Blaster Sunset Dolphin Cruise, a 73’ passenger boat with restrooms; one adult admission per day is included with each NewmanDailey stay. The coastal cruise was wonderful as we watched a beautiful sunset and saw so many dolphins, it was like they were waiting for us and wanting to play.
SUP Yoga at RUN/SUP Boathouse Paddle Club Located in Santa Rosa Beach, RUN/SUP & Boathouse Paddle Club was my favorite stop during the week! I had never tried Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP), much less SUP Yoga, and my teacher Janet made it so easy to learn. Big thanks to owner Tom, programming director Dru, and Janet for the most amazing morning! So serene and calm, it was a truly wonderful experience.
After SUP Yoga, I brunched at Bud & Alleys on the waterfront, South Walton’s oldest restaurant, before joining my family on the beach. I just had to try their famous crab cakes – I loved them and the sweet potato pancakes, too! Over the years the rustic restaurant overlooking the Gulf of Mexico has become a tradition for locals and visitors alike, who gather on Bud & Alleys’ Rooftop Bar at sunset to celebrate the end of another perfect day in paradise by sounding the vintage bell.
More Family Fun & Yoga for Mom We had a wonderful dinner with live music at family friendly Brotula’s Seafood House & Steamer for our third night. Locally caught fish, such as the delicious red grouper, are labeled with QR codes to show diners when and where their food was caught, of course I had to find out. The morning of our fourth day, I enjoyed a free yoga/pilates style class on the lawn at The Market Shops in Miramar Beach. It was a beautiful day to be outdoors. That evening we had phenomenal service, great food, and more family fun at Fudpucker’s at Gator Beach. One of the most popular places in the area for families with children, they have large playgrounds, special areas where kids can write their names on the walls, and the kids got to feed the gators! On the morning we checked out I did some yoga on the lawn in our vacation home’s private backyard, where we spent a lot of family time. The Newman-Dailey staff were super attentive, making sure we had a good time, and provided such an enjoyable, well-rounded experience that we were already planning our next trip during the drive home. I visited Newman-Dailey online at DestinVacation.com to view all the vacation rentals we may want to try on our next trip. We made so many amazing memories on the family friendly, white sandy beaches that we can’t wait to go back again!

Many people are under the impression that booking with a travel agent is more expensive, but that’s not true. The commission that agents receive comes from the resorts, not the consumer. The best part of the travel agency experience is that if there are any issues during your trip, you have a name, a number, and a real person to help resolve those issues! So you can sit back, relax, and they’ll take care of all the work… well except for the packing.
Moving forward, FITrips will bring you a complete schedule of in-destination events, including larger scale group retreats and smaller, more intimate getaways – all hosted by our FITrips feature trainers and instructors. So, whether you’re in to yoga, spin/cycling, Zumba, Crossfit, Boot Camps, bodybuilding or just want a relaxing spa, wine and wellness weekend with some friends, FITrips will deliver the very best value and quality service you expect. As importantly, FITrips provide an opportunity to connect with others just like you – people who share the same unique interests in a fun, engaging and enjoyable beach vacation setting.

MUSCLE QUALITY VS
MOVEMENT QUANTITY
Combating a Strenuous Lifestyle Many people experience painful disc herniations, but things can be done to reduce the risk. The spine consists of bones that stack like blocks, and discs in between them. The discs are covered with ligaments on the outside, and the inside contains a jelly-like fluid. Research shows that disc injuries actually result from long-term, repetitive damage. Any movement that compresses the spine (lifting heavy objects) or flexes the spine (bending forward) contributes to this damage by creating small tears in the protective ligaments around the disc. The ligaments don’t have a good blood supply, so they do not repair well. Performing these movements frequently over time (for women in particular, lifting up children improperly) may allow the fluid on the inside to leak through the tears. This fluid is irritating to the spinal nerves and creates inflammation, which is why patients experience pain, numbness, or tingling. Discs may take weeks or months to fully recover, but there are preventive steps. Practice lifting with your knees - placing your feet farther apart will help. Lift heavy objects from a table or other high surface – for example, pick up children from a chair and not from the ground. Never twist while bent forward.
My office utilizes a technique called flexion-distraction, during which the Doctor provides a gentle stretch to the low back using a special table. This motion “pumps” the discs, which may promote blood flow and healing. This technique may combat the effects of a strenuous lifestyle on disc health, and may reduce healing time with disc injuries.

Sometimes it’s not that we don’t know what to do to change our bodies, but more often it’s that we’re stuck in a rut and don’t know how to get out. 95% of our behavior occurs out of habit, either unconsciously or in reaction to external demands. That’s why we struggle to make changes that last. Even when the need for change is obvious and our intentions are strong, we often fall short. That’s a problem, and the main message the diet industry has offered previously is “Eat fewer calories and exercise more.” If that was true, it would’ve already worked. Did you know that 98% of all dieters gain the weight back? And that the average person makes the same New Year’s resolution ten separate times without success?
Building healthy habits that help you align with how you want to feel every day is the beginning to creating a lifestyle you love Why is that? Because they don’t have support or accountability to follow through to get a lasting result. So people default to their set habits, even when they know those habits make them feel lousy. Without the right support and accountability, this dysfunctional cycle will continue and in many cases, get worse. There is a solution. A Health Coach provides the right SYSTEM, the right SUPPORT and the right ACCOUNTABILITY to help you transform your health and your body—for good. Building healthy habits that help you align with how you want to feel every day is the beginning to creating a lifestyle you love that will support you to show up more fully in your life, relationships and career. RESTAURANT RAVE
A taste of the Southwest Canyon Cafe offers customers a distinct taste of the Southwest that isn’t found anywhere else in St. Louis. In a renovation that took place last Fourth of July, the restaurant now boasts an atmosphere that’s as modern and welcoming as its food is scrumptious and unique. A new collection of charming antiques has been brought in to replace the collection that had occupied the restaurant for the last ten years. As before, traditional Southwestern motifs are sprinkled throughout the café. The bar underwent the most impressive transformation of all. Glittering, multi-colored mosaic tiles serve as the backdrop for Canyon Cafe’s renowned collection of liquors. The minimal, contemporary lighting hanging above the countertop creates an inviting glow even during the daytime. Meanwhile, the offerings from the cuisine remain as up-to-date and delicious as ever. Executive Chef Francisco Bravo prepares a number of dishes from his hometown in Mexico that are consistently huge hits with restaurant-goers. The street tacos come in many varieties and can be mixed and matched for a customized experience. The chimichanga, a flour tortilla that is stuffed with grilled chicken, bell pepper, sweet corn, and Jack cheese, and then fried, is another of the restaurant’s most popular items. Plus, the famous Limit-2 margarita, often called “the best margarita in town”, is made with only top-of-the-line ingredients (and thus why you’re limited to having two!).

Y&S INTERVIEW
Yoga & Spa Magazine’s Ambassador of GoodWill, Sherry Farmer, caught up with Ginny Busch the Executive Director of the Endangered Wolf Center Y&S: Ginny, when did your love of animals begin? GB:
I grew up on a farm in St. Peters Mo. where we had cats, dogs, horses and goats. I also had the unique opportunity to interact with many zoological animals at the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Park. My parents often took my brother and I on business trips and while my Dad was having meetings at the Parks, I would get to play with the animals in the zoo nursery or go for a ride on safari trucks to see the giraffe, wildebeest and zebras in Tampa Florida.
Y&S: Where are some of the most exciting locations/animals you have had contact with? GB:
Just observing the wildlife in my backyard is fun. Currently, six bucks sleep in my yard every night and it is great to watch them. I visited an elephant orphanage in Kenya. It was heartbreaking to see the babies there because their mothers had been poached due to the ivory trade. However, it was also thrilling to see the care given and special connection the elephants had to their keepers.
Y&S: What attracted you to wolves?
numbers of animals at a healthy capacity it also keeps disease transmission down.
GB:
Y&S: What is the future for the animals?
I have always been fascinated about the role predators play in an ecosystem and how essential every piece of he puzzle is to a healthy environment. Wolves are one of the great predators of North America as we have seen with the introduction of wolves back into Yellowstone National Park, we know just how essential they are to the ecosystem. Visiting the Endangered Wolf Center was part of my childhood; today working for the EWC and its residents has been the most challenging and rewarding effort of my career.
Y&S: What is the biggest misconception about wolves? GB:
Wolfs have been vilified as an evil, malicious animal, even in fairy tales, yet they are what brought us dogs. Wolves are family centered animals living in packs with Mom, Dad, brothers and sisters of varying birth year and sometimes Aunts and Uncles. They are shy creatures that want nothing to do with humans. Wolves are essential to a healthy ecosystem. They help keep prey populations in check by preying on the sick and the old. Not only does this keep the

GB:
All of our animals at the EWC will always be well cared for, as was the intention of our founders, more than 40 years ago. There are roughly 100 Mexican wolves in the wild and every one can trace its roots back to our Center. The EWC housed the remaining seven animals in the 1970s and began breeding the species for release. Wolves will continue to have an uncertain future in the U.S. until we can change the cultural value of the species form one of fear to revere. We have come a long way from just seven Mexican wolves, so I am confident that their future is bright. I invite everyone to take on this challenge to change hearts and minds about animal predators and why they are so important to the health of our environment.
