Spring has finally arrived and with it come the tornados and thunderstorms so typical of this time of year. For me, though, these harbingers of Spring are also a great reminder of the importance of staying calm during life’s many storms. We live in an intense, busy, exciting world. Change is constant. Our relationships evolve. Our children grow and mature. Loved ones die. Our careers expand or sometimes come to an end. As a catalyst for change, yoga teaches us to be calm during the storms of change. Everything seems to come up when we begin a yoga practice. Everything we have been suppressing - for years. This is a good thing. Although it can be scary at times, the payoff—remaining a calm, joyful human being even through life’s greatest upheavals--is worth it. A lot of people—me included—begin yoga as a way to change our bodies. But we soon discovers yoga’s greatest secret: as your practice expands, so does your ability to accept, and deal with, change. Or, as one of my yoga teachers says, ‘We come for our vanity and we stay for our sanity’. One yoga class a week helps me regain my calm. Three yoga classes a week prevents me from getting pulled into the drama of any storms that may be brewing. Treating myself to a massage or a facial once a month also brings me back to center. Often, I am amazed and realized how stressed I have been when I get a massage or get back to yoga after skipping a week. This body and emotional awareness is a gift of my yoga practice, signaling me that I need to once again, take better care of myself. We can always begin again. We can always start over. Each day is a new beginning. Spring is a beautiful reminder of new beginnings and new opportunities. Watch it all around find calm during the storms. Lococo House!

Lococo House Bed & Breakfasts

“Your St Charles Home Away From Home.”

We love caring for our guests and making their B & B stay in exciting St Charles, MO a memorable and fun occasion!

How long has it been since you have been to an old-fashioned pajama party? At Lococo House, your wish is our command, as you and your BFF’s come for a getaway to our bed and breakfast. Gather for a night or a weekend in our unpressured space for rest, conversation, laughter, shopping, and eating! Whatever your interests, we can design a perfect visit for you. When women gather, there are priceless benefits from taking a break from the endless pace of our lives. Time with girlfriends has a calming effect that helps us cope with stress and live longer. These special relationships shape who we are and who we are yet to be. Girlfriends are family that we choose, and we need to nurture these relationships by spending quality time with one another. Lococo House offers a chance to reconnect and refresh these important bonds. You may just want to be in our cozy home enjoying food and conversation. You can plan a whole weekend of scrapbooking or just reading a good book. But, if you want to get out and about, the Lococo Shuttle is ready to show you the town. “The most popular trip we set up is to ten local resale shops,” says proprietor, Rhona Lococo. “We pile all the girls in the van and shop ‘til they drop. There is no time limit on any of the stores, so when the group finds a good one, they can linger there. The girls love to find a bargain. The van comes back full of packages and full of laughter.” “When guests leave here, they often say they are going back to reality after being in another world. Being able to provide that…..that’s a good thing.” Lococo House Bed & Breakfast 1309 N. Fifth St. • Guest House 1307 North Fifth St. Saint Charles, Missouri 63301 (636) 946-0619 www.lococohouse.com

Girls Gone Zen Head to these five stress-busting locales for a bachelorette weekend that will leave you refreshed, energized… and ready for your big day.

By Katie McElveen

Anguilla, West Indies Cap Juluca Fresh from a recent makeover, Cap Juluca is as luxurious as it is calming. Spread over a perfect crescent of powdery sand and crystal blue water, the resort pairs traditional Caribbean pursuits—croquet, afternoon tea, rum punch, tennis, lunch on a shady patio and afternoon naps on a hammock—with pitchperfect service (think beach butlers with cooling tropical sorbet) and wellness activities like massages on the beach, sunset yoga, pilates and beach fitness classes. Easy-to-explore Anguilla is filled with casual beach bars serving specialties like conch salad and grilled lobster, miles of stunning, sun-drenched strands and a lively music scene. Capjuluca.com

Branson, MO Chateau on the Lake Soothing and sporty, this lakeside resort is close enough to Branson to take advantage of the town’s 50 theaters and other attractions—try the cooking classes at Silver Dollar City--but far enough away to offer uninterrupted views of Table Rock Lake and miles of quiet shoreline for kayaking or canoeing. Explore the hill-strewn landscape on foot, or head to Dogwood Canyon Nature Park, where, in addition to hiking, you can hit the trails on horseback or a mountain bike. Peaceful activities abound, from fly fishing to yoga classes in the resort’s movement studio and a signature massage in the spa, which includes gentle stretching. Chateauonthelake.com

Chicago, IL The Four Seasons This buzzing urban center is filled with great neighborhoods, fabulous shopping (Hello, Magnificent Mile!) fascinating architecture and a stunning lakefront locale. And plan to eat well, without stress: top restaurants like Urban Belly and The Publican have group-friendly communal tables that your group can reserve in advance. Get your spa fix at the Four Seasons, which offers several treatments exclusively at the Chicago property. A favorite is the renewing Aroma Mixology body treatment, which combines a foot massage with a relaxing essential-oil spinal massage and can be performed on several friends at once. Or treat yourselves to Champagne: the paraffin wrap begins with an exfoliating soak in bubbly, and ends with a glass of Champagne. Fourseasons.com

Nashville, TN Gaylord Opryland Hotel & Relache Spa They don’t call it Music City for nothing: Nashville is home to the Bluebird Café (which launched the careers of, among others, Kenny Chesney and Garth Brooks); Music Row’s bars and honky tonks, the Country Music Hall of Fame and, right next to the hotel, The Grand Ole Opry. You and your girls can even cut your own record in Ryman Auditorium’s recording studio or learn to line dance at the resort. When it’s time to shop, splurge on designer duds in the trendy shops of the 12 South or Hillsboro Village neighborhoods or hunt for bargains at the super-convenient Opry Mills Mall. Afterwards, slow the tempo with an exclusive lavender-infused Botanical Body Ritual at the Relache Spa. Marriott.com

Mt. Ida, AR Mountain Harbor Resort Tucked into the Ozarks, Mountain Harbor Resort is both a luxury retreat and a respected wellness center. Beyond spa treatments to detoxify and rejuvenate the body and face, the resort’s Turtle Cove Spa also offers holistic therapies such as crystal energy work--the local quartz crystals are considered among the best in the world-- sound therapy and Chakra balancing. An outdoor yoga pavilion and woodland workout circuit bring nature into your workout routine; the resort is also adjacent to Ouachita National Forest, which is crisscrossed with more than 700 miles of trails. Although hotel rooms are available, the resort also rents cottages, so you and your ‘maids can stay in one place. Mountainharborresort.com

Aquarius Wellness Aquarius Wellness is a sanctuary for the senses and it most certainly lives up to that title. by Stacy Hunsicker Their mission statement entirely sums up what they are all about—they strive to be a space of healing and wholeness for clients and wellness professionals alike; a refuge that nourishes body, mind and spirit, in service to a happier, healthier, more peaceful planet... one person at a time. I visited their locally-owned boutique wellness spa for the first time a couple weeks ago and I was completely yet pleasantly surprised at how kindly I was greeted when I entered the facility and how uniquely my experience was tailored to meet my specific needs. The entire environment of Aquarius Wellness was cozy, yet warm and inviting, with an aroma that totally relaxed me. It reminded me of the Grand Velas in Mexico, where the entire experience is dedicated to your well being and rejuvenation. Aquarius Wellness has created a sanctuary within the

hustle and bustle of St. Louis, a place to decompress and a place for renewal. My esthetician, Alix, was attentive, incredibly professional and obviously well-trained. From the moment I arrived to the moment I left, I was the focus. I had opted for the Brightening Facial treatment, which lasted 75 minutes. This included a pore extraction treatment that left my skin looking radiant. Aquarius Wellness also offers treatments like the Balinese Massage. This is a nontraditional massage; an ancient healing tradition from the island of Bali, where deep, relaxing, long and flowing strokes along the entire length of your body allow a true escape that nourishes your mind, body and spirit. Acupressure, muscle manipulation

and warm stones are also incorporated throughout the experience and aromatic essential oils generate a true healing process. If you’re looking for something to tone and revitalize your skin, the Anti-Gravity Lift is the perfect solution. This remarkable age defying treatment uses micro-current technology to tighten, tone and lift the skin. This non-invasive treatment re-educates tired facial muscles to produce a firmer, more contoured and youthful appearance. I simply can’t say enough good things about my experience at Aquarius Wellness. Their professionalism, honesty and integrity really have turned me into a loyal customer. They get it and they know how to do it right. Everything works together in order to leave the client not only with a renewed appearance but also a renewed sense of self. Health, wellness and vitality is the name of their game, make it yours. Contact their newly-opened Clayton location at 314-645-7643 or visit their website at www.aquariuswellness.com.

So what should you eat? Here are my top picks to detoxify your system and eat healthier: • Almonds: Vitamin E • Carrots: Vitamin A • Green Tea: Contains powerful antioxidants • Flax or Chia seeds: Both contain omega 3’s, which reduce inflammation. These also help to firm the skin by attracting water to dehydrated locations in the body. Adding to smoothies is a great way to go. • Sweet Potatoes: Are extremely high in Vitamin C which helps to smooth the skin.

• Also load up on celery, cucumber, kale, spinach, lemon, ginger, and other greens. • Powdered Greens: Look for an organic brand and mix into water daily, or put into your favorite smoothie. The next step is to look into supplements, because I believe that you can’t get all the necessary vitamins and minerals solely from the food you eat. • Omega 3’s: Great for reducing inflammation.1000mg EPA. • Probiotics: These helpful bacteria heal your digestive track and boost your immune system. Aids glow • Vitamin A, E, and C: Email Tessa for the names of effective, high-quality, cost-effective vitamins I believe everyone can exude a healthy appearance, but first you much look inside your body. Restoring a youthful shine is simple to do with a few easy steps, so instead of trying to cover up the problematic areas, refresh yourself with these suggestions to achieve a luminous, new you.

Salon Antebellum is the Perfect Place for Your

Pre-Wedding Pampering Kelly Bileddo is not only a Master Artist but more of a Michelangelo in the world of hair artistry She was named one of sixteen Master Artists worldwide. Kelly loves what she does and it’s not hard for her clients to see why. Having grown up in South City St. Louis, Kelly found herself going down a path that she knew would not be fulfilling. Her focus on early childhood education for three years simply did not make her heart sing like she wanted. Although she said “adios” to her current job of choice, Kelly didn’t say goodbye to her teaching background entirely. After graduating in 2004 from the National Academy of Beauty Arts, she ventured into the field of education in Sexy Hair Concepts. And after a few, short years, Kelly found herself with the title of Regional Education manager, managing Sexy Hair education in over eleven states. Soon, Kelly found that she wasn’t happy just being a manager, but wanted to “get her hands dirty” with growing other hair professionals to succeed

lo-res need higher

in the industry. Her overall objective was to encourage other hairdressers that finding your true artist is what brings your talent to surface level. This eventually led to Kelly opening her very own high-end salon, Salon Antebellum--the perfect growing atmosphere for growing artists. Entering Salon Antebellum is like entering an age gone by. Kelly may decorate her salon with dated, unwanted furniture and castoffs found around the city, but she takes time to rework these pieces and brings out their hidden beauty once again. This same mentality is used in the services offered at Salon Antebellum. All hair artists there are trained in “Structure and Motion”, a technique of cutting that utilizes each individual’s head shape creating texture, fluency, and artistic interpretation. Salon Antebellum is also the perfect place for all your prewedding pampering. From in-house services for the bride and bridal party, to the “Lady Antebellas”--a traveling team of artists trained in speed to have you and your bridal party looking sexy in no time--the artists at Salon Antebellum are all about making your day a dream come true. From simple cuts and colors, to styles and airbrushed makeup applications, Salon Antebellum lives up to all its hype. What you find within Salon Antebellum is not just a haircut, but an experience.

Salon Antebellum is located at 12630 Lamplighter Square Shopping Center, St Louis, MO 63128. To book your visit, call 314.849.1115 or visit www.salonantebellum.com.

Smiles, laughter, joy… even a few happy giggles, punctuate the air, sending out a vibration of delightful anticipation. The exquisite, delicate drape of the wedding gown wraps the bride in a sensation of splendor. The Maid-of-Honor adjusts the bride’s veil and lightly tucks in a strand of hair that has escaped from the curls captured in a wreath of sparking jewels piled high on her head. The Mother-ofthe-Bride calmly surveys the scene as a gentle smile slowly spreads across her face. Her eyes tear up as she recognizes the far reaching effects of this much anticipated wedding day of her oldest daughter. The concerns from yesterday’s hectic rush of last minute details drop away and her heart swells with gratitude for her daughter’s potential happiness. After today, her daughter will embark on her life’s journey with the groom at her side as her partner. Page 1

The mother glances again at her daughter, taking in every detail. The elaborate lace dances in delicate patterns as it embraces the bride. The pearl necklace shimmers against the bride’s skin and twinkles with the secrets given to her by her grandmother only a short year ago. And, the final touch, the bracelet. A Circle of Hope Bracelet worn by the bride and her bridesmaids with love and respect to honor her grandmother who suffered the devastating effects of cancer. The bride had invited her family members and all the bridesmaids to meet her at Circle of Hope Bracelets’ headquarters to design a special bracelet matching her wedding colors. The staff displayed the array of beads, crystals and sterling-silver spacers that could be selected to create a unique bracelet as a tribute to her grandmother’s love and affection. Her grandmother had rejoiced in all the high school and college successes and sympathized during the normal upsand-downs of becoming a young adult. The bracelet is a wonderful visible symbol of the bond of love celebrating the occasion. One bride, Sarah Goff, recalls her wedding day and shares her experience this way: “Circle of Hope Bracelets was a special part of my wedding day because I was able to give my bridesmaids a beautiful gift to wear that also served as a remembrance of those who couldn't be with us because of cancer. I loved being able to custom design the bracelets to match their dresses and bouquets while also supporting the Circle of Hope Bracelets’

mission. In addition to the bracelets, instead of giving our guests party favors, we also chose to make a donation to the American Cancer Society in honor of friends and family affected by cancer”.

Yoga

Yoga to the Rescue by Emma R. Frey, Junior Editor Stress is a common occurrence in our lives. And although it is aggravated by different situations and different factors from one person to another, it plagues all of us, there’s no doubt about it. The way each of us handles stress also varies from person to person. Some already have their own tips and tricks on how to control it--ways to rein in the “wild horse” that is stress--but many of us simply don’t know how to cope. Yoga is an amazing remedy for our battle against stress. All humans possess the primal reaction known as “fight-or-flight” which comes in handy during life-threatening situations. But usually this survival mechanism is over-the-top for basic, everyday struggles or conflicts. Instead of viewing these daily “mountains” as too hard to climb, view them as challenges that you can overcome. The following meditation technique can help ease your stress and assist you in both taming it and overcoming it.

During your daily yoga routine, simply sit on your yoga mat and call to mind the physical responses you normally encounter when battling stress. Perhaps it’s tensing your neck muscles or clenching your fists. Concentrate on these physical responses and amplify them as much as you can, trying to exaggerate the actions. Clench your fists harder, squeeze those shoulder muscles together even tighter. Then, begin a yoga pose that is completely the opposite of those motions--a pose that brings you to a completely opposite state. During this pose, concentrate on your emotions, feelings, and sensations. Hold the pose as long as you like, then come back to a seated posture on your mat. Reflect on the experience and compare your real response to your recaptured response. You’ll find freedom knowing that you were able to transform your normal stress-fighting tendencies into much more manageable feelings.

Living Fit

How Important is Compassion? by Rebecca Wiederkehr, LCSW Compassion is the ultimate and most meaningful embodiment of emotional maturity. It is through compassion that a person achieves the highest peak and deepest reach in his or her search for selffulfillment. Arthur Jersild Compassion has a variety of definitions. It can mean “to suffer together”, “to be with”, and to want to relieve another’s suffering. It is not pity, which feels sorry for someone. It is closer to empathy, which is to stand in the shoes of another, feeling her suffering often to the point of taking away her suffering. The difference is that, with empathy, it’s easy to become so close in hurting with the person that it becomes impossible to acknowledge that the one suffering is capable of helping herself. It can create a situation where we can become too close to offer the healthy support that is needed. Someone with compassion, on the other hand, feels the suffering, wants to help the one suffering, and acknowledges the one suffering’s innate ability to relieve her own suffering/misery. Just being fully present with the one suffering, acknowledging her as an equal and understanding we have a shared humanity, can provide the support needed to assist her in reconnecting to her innate personal power. This can assist her in freeing herself from suffering and rediscovering happiness and joy. Everyone has a right to these qualities. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if everyone understood this in a profound way? The first step to having authentic compassion for others is to have authentic compassion for ourselves, experiencing and fully appreciating our own suffering. Self-compassion has a growing interest in psychological and spiritual fields. It grew out of Buddhist thought. Self-compassion involves a) being kind and understanding and accepting of one’s own pain, suffering and shortcomings, b) realizing one’s suffering is part of the larger human experience, and c)being present to one’s self, while remaining mindful to the thoughts and feelings that are helping to create suffering. The more genuinely loving, kind and accepting -- self-compassionate -- we are with ourselves, the more we will be so with others. Stress and self-criticism can easily cause us to become critical and lash out at others. We don’t realize we are projecting our own thoughts and feelings onto them. This, in itself, causes tremendous suffering for us and in our world in general. Self-compassion affects our well-being on all levels. Our brain responds by decreasing activity in the limbic area and activates mindfulness and compassion in the neo-cortex. Building selfcompassion is primary in our lives.

Here are some ideas that may help. Meditate daily, befriending that SELF inside. You are that SELF. Breathe in - Love to Self, Breathe out - Love to others. When someone is stressed or seems to be attacking you, practice saying inside “I wonder what is going on with her at this time.” Practice being curious so as not to take it personally. Make a practice of noticing how we are alike, instead of how we are different. Practice what is often heard in yoga classes. “What do you need to release in order to go deeper into this pose?” ...to go deeper into selfcompassion? Self-compassion is full acceptance of self, the SELF. Coming from the heart, void of self judgment, self-compassion opens the flow of giving and receiving love. This is a courageous journey. MAY THE SELF BE WITH YOU. (Watch for more on Self-Compassion in the Summer Issue.) Rebecca Wiederkehr, LCSW assists people in releasing stuck trauma as well as supporting personal and spiritual growth within relationships with self and others. See ad in this issue to learn more, or call (314) 8224752.

It would serve us well to be proactive in nurturing self-compassion. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2014

St. Louis' Ultimate Indoor Cycling Studio Ultimate Cycling is an Indoor Cycling studio dedicated to having the best in equipment, technology and instructors. Started by Stuart and Laurie Cohen to provide the best indoor cycling has to offer. Ultimate utilizes Schwinn AC Performance Plus bikes equipped with the MPower console to provide you with RPM, Power, Heart Rate and much more info to allow you to make the most of your ride. This system ties into Performance IQ to allow you to be able to compare your ride with the rest of the class and be able to download to your records. Our goal is to make your ride not only great fitness, but fun. They have teamed up with Kim Carriglio, a personal trainer and longtime cycle instructor to provide the best instructors St. Louis has to offer. Mike Bockserman With St. Louis having one of the coldest and snowiest winters in a while, my daughter Katie and I were looking for somewhere to maintain our outdoor cycling fitness since we couldn't ride outside. We found Ultimate Cycling as the ideal facility to train at. The instructors are all highly motivating, and if that isn't enough to push you, the bikes provide realtime performance data on big screens in front of the class, allowing you to "race" other riders in the class. Now that we are riding outside, we both have noticed that our training at Ultimate Cycling has allowed us to stay ahead of the pack.

Catina Bryant What I enjoy most about spinning at Ultimate Cycling is the camaraderie. Large, commercial fitness centers are good but a person can get lost in the shuffle. At Ultimate Cycling, everyone knows your name from the owners to the instructors and the patrons. You get more personalized attention than at larger gyms. The instructors are very informative and helpful. They will assess your needs and help you to meet your goals. There's no need to feel intimidated either. Everyone is extremely courteous whether you're a beginner or a seasoned cyclist. Since joining UC, I've lost weight, increased my stamina and riding endurance. It's a great feeling to have everyone cheering you on to reach your personal best. I love working out and it's even better when you have a great environment to do it. We are family at Ultimate Cycling.

Tera Petri I only knew one thing…..it was time for a POSITIVE change! The “baby fat” excuse was getting old (my daughter is 4!)….I had to do something I could fall in love with to get in shape. But what? ULTIMATE CYCLING has proven to be the answer! I’ve dropped over 20 lbs. in 3 months and I have no intention of stopping here. Whether you want to tone up, stay in great shape or drop some “baby fat”….ULTIMATE CYCLING is the place to do it! ULTIMATE CYCLING’S atmosphere is extremely friendly, upbeat and totally exhilarating. The owners, Laurie and Stu Cohen, along with every certified instructor continually dedicate themselves to providing the BEST indoor cycling experience St. Louis has to offer. What is Advance Care Planning?

Advance Care Planning is the important decisions about care you want to receive if you happen to become unable to speak for yourself. Wishes Decisions about end-of-life care are deeply personal, and are based on your values and beliefs. Talking with your loved ones, your healthcare providers, and even your friends are all important steps to make your wishes known. These conversations will relieve loved ones and healthcare providers of needing to guess what care you would want if you were ever facing a healthcare or medical crisis. While it can be difficult to initiate these conversations, ultimately, they can be an invaluable gift to those you love and those providing medical care. It is impossible to foresee every type of circumstance or illness; therefore, it is essential to think in general about what is important to you and to make

sure your loved ones and care providers are aware of your priorities. Advance Directive describes two types of legal documents that enable you to plan for and communicate your end-of-life wishes in the event that you are unable to communicate: a Medical Power of Attorney and a Living Will. Medical Power of Attorney allows you to appoint a person you trust as your healthcare agent (or surrogate decision maker), who is authorized to make medical decisions on your behalf if you are unable to speak for yourself. Living Will allows you to document your wishes concerning medical treatments that you would or would not want if facing a serious or life-threatening illness. Find out more about Advance Care Planning by contacting Alternative Hospice. Their care team can provide you with the tools and resources needed to complete a living will, appoint a health care power of attorney, advance care directive, as well as a DNR (do-not-resuscitate). Weekday retreats begin with lunch at 1:00 p.m. Monday and end with brunch at noon Thursday. White House has never had a fixed charge for our retreat. We have always asked for a free will offering from the retreatants, based on what they choose to give. White House is a registered 501-C3 non-profit.

Recent Testimonials: “This was my first retreat and I was uneasy about going. I found the White House retreat to be life-changing. Perhaps for the first time in my life, I truly accepted that God is present in my life and God does love me. I came to the retreat because I was really struggling personally, spiritually, and in my marriage. I learned more about myself and my faith in 3 1/2 days than in my entire life, and I came away with clarity and enthusiasm. I can't wait to go back!” “White House has encouraged and supported my spiritual growth for more than 30 years. God healed me from several serious compulsive behaviors, and I know White House played a part in supporting those changes in my life.” “I have been on the women’s recruiting committee for the last 5 years. I do it because I love White House and it has changed my life. I personally had a miraculous healing on my very first retreat at White House 10 years ago this coming July. God healed me from severe pain of grief when I lost my son. Today, I share the joy with everyone – that God can heal you if you just sit in quiet with Him and ask Him.” Contact White House Jesuit Retreat at 314-416-4600 or online at www.whretreat.org.

Services for People with Dementia Although some forgetfulness can be attributed to the natural aging process, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are more serious and may require professional assistance. To determine whether dementia has progressed to the point where your loved one may need professional assistance, ask yourself the following questions:

delegated Power of Attorney.

Can they get lost?

Nursing and companion care in the home is a good option for those suffering with physical limitations. Those with impaired memory tend to do better in social settings with people like themselves. Whether you find service providers through word-of-mouth or a professional agency, insist on references.

If the answers to these questions leave you concerned about your loved one’s ability to continue to live alone, you may want to consider enlisting professional assistance. There are a number of options, including:

Home Services

Adult Day Program When you’re not comfortable leaving your loved one alone in their home consider an Adult Day Program. Adult Day Programs offer a way to socialize with peers and engage in physical and mental activities, while at the same time giving caregivers a welcome respite. Some adult day programs offer physical therapy, bathing, physician services and beauty shop services. Be sure to ask about state licensing, staff ratios and safety features such as alarm doors and criminal background checks.

Ancillary services are available for additional charges.

Skilled nursing facility Licensed skilled nursing facilities are staffed according to state regulations. Ask about specific training: facilities that specialize in dementia care will have staff members specifically trained to work with dementia patients and will offer separate programs for the different stages of dementia. When touring a skilled nursing community look for buildings that offer ground level living, as these are the most easily accessible in emergencies. Don’t forget about staff-to-resident ratio including activity therapists and observe the staff to see how they interact with residents. Assisted Living These facilities have been created for people needing minimal supervision who can find their own way out of the building in the event of an emergency. This is a good alternative if independent decision making is present.

Sustainable Design: Good for You and Your Environment

“Going green” and becoming more sustainable is more an awareness of our environment and what we contribute to that environment. 42

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Spring 2014

Green Living I developed an interest in sustainable design several years back when I started doing renovations of older, urban homes. To bring these homes up to code, it was necessary to get rid of lead paint and properly dispose of asbestos while still maintaining the beauty and integrity of the existing building. I began to realize the amount of toxic chemicals and formaldehydes that are used today in our everyday use of carpets, furniture and upholstered fabrics. Collectively they have all become a contributing factor in the rise of asthma and upper respiratory health issues. Creating a beautiful and healthy environment for your home and/or office space became something I really got excited about and I have been promoting the “greenside” ever since. To discuss the positives of recycled and reclaimed products and simply to share the benefits of removing the toxic chemicals found in paint – as for low or no VOC paint – is a step to a healthier home and a healthier you. When asked to create a retreat—really creating a retreat from an unused garage on the clients’ property—was all at once exciting and challenging at the same time. Collaborating with their thoughts, needs and wishes…a private space with an emphasis on relaxation and comfort…was born. The existing garage had no plumbing or HVAC. In collaboration with top contractor Mike Lamke of Renovation Specialists, plans were drawn, discussed and decisions made. Components of this retreat included a bath with shower and both sleeping and lounging areas. A transformed garage becoming a cottage – a retreat, a great get away—so close yet so far away. Using only no-VOC (Volatile Organic Chemicals, odorless and toxic free) paint, local lumber, recycled fabrics, local talent, treasured family items and adding lots of comfortable surroundings (you gotta have a TV, fridge and microwave) put smiles on not only my clients’ faces and but definitely one on mine and contractor Mike Lamke’s. “Going green” and becoming more sustainable is more an awareness of our environment and what we contribute to that environment. The good news is that there are many eco-friendly options available throughout the St. Louis area, including the big box stores. Recycled carpet can be found in every style, cut and color; look for the Green Label logo on the back side of the carpet sample. Paint with low or no VOC can be found in all the major paint manufacturers and fabrics and furnishings, both recycled and without toxic formaldehydes can be found almost everywhere today as well as energy saving appliances. And the cost? Not prohibitive, depending on what you’re looking for; sometimes you can even come across products including 10% more for your money. Thinking about renovating or simply refreshing an existing space? Your choices are endless today in fabrics and furnishings, colors and styles. Using more sustainable products is a healthy step in the right direction for you and your environment. The Secret of the Yoga Sutra: Lecture • Guided Practice Book Signing June 24 • 7pm Ethical Society of St. Louis

A Q&A with Pandit Rajmani Tigunait Yogasutrastl.com

After 35 years of teaching in the West, Sanskrit scholar and spiritual teacher Pandit Rajmani Tigunait has published his long-awaited commentary on the Yoga Sutra—the seminal text on yoga practice and philosophy. His new book, The Secret of the Yoga Sutra, is the first practitioner-oriented commentary that is fully grounded in the living tradition of the Himalayan masters. Tigunait, who is lecturing at the Ethical Society in St. Louis on June 24 from 7-9 p.m. as part of his 70+ city book tour, recently let us pick his brain about the deeper dimensions of yoga and how to apply its ancient wisdom to your modern life. with PANDIT RAJMANI TIGUNAIT, PhD Spiritual Head, Himalayan Institute Y&S: So what exactly is the Yoga Sutra? a roller coaster of ups and downs for thousands of years. I have learned in the last 35 years through this commentary, The Secret of the Yoga Sutra, and by teaching and interacting with students. Y&S: What do you hope to accomplish through your Secret of The Yoga Sutra book tour and courses? PRT: My wish is that the Yoga Sutra brings the same level of transformation to other people as it did to me. In order to make that wish become a reality, my vision is to bring the Yoga Sutra to people’s doorsteps, making this knowledge available to them on many levels and from many perspectives [through a summer book tour, online study groups, and a four-part master course on the Yoga Sutra that students can take in person or via live streaming video]. My vision is that the yoga community, the scientific community, the medical community, and the health community take from the Yoga Sutra what is useful for them, conduct more research, assimilate the knowledge into their existing practice, and take their own field of knowledge to the next level. My vision is to explain, here is how you can embrace the [teachings of the Yoga Sutra] in your own personal practice for self-improvement and self-empowerment. Here is how you can accelerate your quest for total well-being and spiritual unfoldment.
