LOSE WEIGHT with HYPNOSIS. Personal Motivation Hypnosis Clinic NEW to ST. LOUIS!

Discover how I lost 60 pounds and completely reshaped my body! My name is Angy Hoffert of Lincoln, IL. Hypnosis has given me a new outlook on life. I have surpassed the goal I set for myself when I started. I feel better about myself now than I ever have in the past. When I look at pictures of myself prior to hypnosis, I was just miserable. I am so glad I'm not that person anymore. Now I lead a very active life and look forward to getting out of the house. When I got these new pictures of myself I couldn't believe it. I never thought I would be able to wear short shorts or a bikini and now I am confident enough to have my picture taken in them. Hypnosis is definitely the key to successful weight loss. I lost 50 pounds in one year and kept it off. If you are struggling with diet plans I strongly urge you to call for your free screening. This could be one decision you make that will change your life forever. If hypnosis worked for me, just imagine what it could do for you!

Brave the Bikini! “Wear a bikini as long as you can,” advised an older woman interviewed in a magazine I read years ago. Summer is here along with swimsuit season. Some of you have worked hard all winter to maintain your fit bikini body. Others, like me, are little less concerned until an invitation comes for a weekend at the lake. Then we go into high gear to find the perfect suit to hide some of our less than perfect body parts. As you can see from the photo, I do brave the bikini occasionally. However, for kayaking and social events the tankini is my best friend. I recently found an incredible flattering tankini and skort combo at the new Athleta store at Plaza Frontenac. It’s comfortable and still sexy. As the publisher of a health and beauty magazine, I support a rounded approach to enhancing one’s beauty. It is important to me that Yoga & Spa Magazine convey a message of care from the inside out rather than from a place of vanity, insecurity or societal pressure. When we come from a place of genuine desire, inner change occurs and outer change follows. The saying “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” means so much more when you make sure YOU are your beholder. Keep in mind the biggest enemy of beauty is stress and sleep deprivation. It seems simple; exercise, rest and a good diet will keep us fit and trim. It can be so difficult to take care of ourselves while raising kids, working, running a business, supporting our husbands, wives, families and friends. We MUST put ourselves first in order to be capable of living and enjoying our full lives. So, go put on your bikini, make a yummy Banana Lime Smoothie (recipe on page 23), and find a spot by the pool to enjoy this issue of Yoga & Spa.

Namaste,

Living With IBS and Other Digestive Disorders? “My digestion hasn’t been normal in years. I have had abdominal pain, bloating, gas, belching, acid reflux, diarrhea (sometimes explosive after meals, yuck!), constipation, even unexplainable skin problems. Not always all at the same time but enough that it was starting to seem like no matter how simple my meals were, I was still getting sick. After trying all sorts of over the counter medications I decided to see my doctor with the hope that I could find an answer. After many tests, some quite invasive, and thousands of dollars spent, he diagnosed me with IBS after all of my tests came back normal. I was happy to finally have a diagnosis and put a name to what was wrong with me. My doctor then gave me a prescription and sent me on my way. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any relief from the medication. When I told my doctor that the medications weren’t working he told me that I needed to change my diet but couldn’t tell me exactly what I needed to change. He sent me to a registered dietician who gave me so much information I didn’t know where to begin. She had a generic premade packet of information for me that I guessed she gave to everyone. Am I to assume that I am exactly the same as every other person that has digestive problems or is it possible that I am different and perhaps need a different diet based on what’s going wrong with my body? If other patients are receiving the same treatments (prescriptions) as me isn’t it safe to assume they are getting the same results also? After attempting to understand the information and following the diet she gave me, I was still frustrated and STILL getting sick. I decided to do some research on my own and found that there are no known causes for IBS. NO KNOWN CAUSES??? How can a doctor ‘treat’ me if he doesn’t find the cause? Am I destined to live with these symptoms forever???” - signed FRUSTRATED & TIRED

Unfortunately, this is an all too familiar story. The patient is frustrated because they have seen their doctor, are taking the prescribed medication and they still have the same symptoms that they originally presented for. The doctor is frustrated because they have diagnosed the problem, prescribed the appropriate medication that goes with that diagnosis and the patient is not getting better. In most cases the doctor would never let the patient know they are frustrated. After all, the doctor is providing the “standard of care.” What is the standard of care? It’s literally a manual produced by the AMA that says if you diagnose this condition, you prescribe this medication, this diagnosis requires this surgery, and so on. This is the reason conventional doctors aren’t running tests to find out the CAUSE of IBS. It literally won’t change their treatment. They are still going to provide the same standard of care. (i.e. same prescriptions.) Wikipedia defines IBS as “a symptombased diagnosis characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits. As a functional bowel disorder, IBS has no known organic cause. Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate. Historically a diagnosis of exclusion, a

diagnosis of IBS can now be made on the basis of symptoms alone… Although there is no cure for IBS, there are treatments that attempt to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments, medication and psychological interventions.” The truth of the matter is that in the last 30 years our food supply has drastically changed, more than any other time in history. With all of the advancements in technology and genetic modification of organisms (GMO’s) many of the foods we currently eat are highly processed with additives, preservatives, hormones, antibiotics, and genetic modifications. There has been very little research on the short and long term health effects of GMO foods. At Premier Health Care our approach is a patient centered. We run extensive testing on patients to identify the causes of their digestive distress. Things like nutritional deficiencies, food allergies, a diet high in refined sugars and GMO’s and low in fiber, medications and antibiotics, stress, and active GI infections. We then customize a diet to each patient individually based on their test results. We also customize an all natural approach to healing the digestive tract (herbs, nutritional products, shakes,

creams). As a result of this individualized and customized approach our patients get results that were unattainable with conventional doctors. This type of program is not for everyone, not everyone is willing to make the dietary changes that it takes to get their body and life back to normal. If you have digestive problems and think that this type of treatment may be for you, please call our office to qualify for a free consultation. We do not accept every patient, only those motivated to make the necessary changes, and those who take their health as their #1 priority. “I had been having stomach and intestinal problems for the past three years and they were getting very intense. I no longer have the stomach cramps, the intense bloating, the pain, and the intestinal complications as I once had and I have lost 65lbs.” - Kerri B. Dr. Sean K. Branham 7411 Manchester Rd. Resort Life in Door County, Wisconsin

by Mary Lou Fitzsimmons & Sarah Fitzsimmons

Have you ever been so busy for so long that you were worried about what would happen to you if you didn't get a break? I won't describe in detail my last 7 months, but trust me when I tell you that they were hectic and intense. Usually, a trip to our summer cottage in Door County Wisconsin is enough to calm my nerves, but this called for something more. Luckily, tucked on the back roads of this idyllic town is the Saguaro Day Spa.

a marvelous pedicure that included a lengthy massage and paraffin treatment. I left Saguaro feeling utterly myself again and totally brought back to center. It is the perfect retreat for anyone in need of a healing touch or simply a day of relaxation and rejuvenation.

My welcome at the door set my afternoon's tone; it was serene, respectful and warm. I happily changed into a plush robe and sipped a cup of herbal tea, enjoying the desert tones of the southwestern decor. I was entering the zone already! My two signature treatments were the Raindrop Therapy and the Indian Head Massage. During the Rain Drop Therapy, the therapist applies several essential oils along the spine, legs and feet. Using light touch massage and heat from warmed towels, tension is relieved and skin restored. The Indian Head Massage uses aromatic oil, specifically selected for you based on a questionnaire, to massage your face, head, neck and shoulders. Both treatments were truly decadent. The Indian Head Massage in particular opened my sinuses and prevented an oncoming migraine. I wrapped up my day with Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2013

One Change Can Make the Biggest Difference in Your Life by Teresa Scott-Syed

Would you be surprised if I said, “Become fit and healthy?” Just think about this for a moment. When this state exists you feel confidence, enthusiasm, encouragement, energy and hopefulness. Aside from the obvious feeling of being physically fit and strong, you feel mentally alert and positive about your life and its future outcome. Two and a half years ago I learned of a real viable approach to becoming fit and healthy. I had hypertension and been on blood pressure medication for 20 years. Even though I had a very active lifestyle, the years of being overweight had finally begun to take effect. I was headed toward diabetes, heart disease and knee replacements unless I dealt with the reality of the situation. As fate would have it, just at the right time, I met a friend who had lost 90 pounds and had managed to keep it off for over two years so when she shared her experience with me I listened cautiously but with great interest. My only response to her was… "I have tried every diet you can think of and I will never consider anything unless you can absolutely guarantee me I will not gain it back." To my delight and surprise she said, "If you do what I say and follow maintenance compliantly I promise you will not gain it back." At that point I said "Okay I’m in." I consciously decided at the age of 62 that it was time to take responsibility for my health. Little did I realize how that decision would so positively impact my life! One year later I am happy to report that I lost 70 pounds, 14% body fat, 98 inches and went from a size 20 to a 10. Even more amazing is the fact that I now register normal blood pressure readings, am off all medication and in the best health I’ve experienced in 25 years. The greatest gift of all is that I have managed to maintain my weight loss for a year and a half. I was able to accomplish this life changing event by implementing the program offered through Pounds and Inches Away in Creve Coeur. Because of the 14

Artfully Aging Artfully Aging is an art program designed specifically for seniors of all skill levels. It serves the full range of senior communities, from independent senior centers to skilled nursing and memory care centers. The goal of Artfully Aging is to provide an inspiring activity and for each participant to experience a sense of creativity and enjoyment through participation. Studies have shown that creativity greatly enhances our lives. option of painting the cardinal sitting on a baseball bat or on a branch in a tree (most participants are cardinal fans). Participants are aided in getting the images transferred onto watercolor paper and then are individually painted allowing each project to have its own personal style. As the session is wrapping up stories around baseball, St. Louis and summertime are solicited and shared along with singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”. This approach makes for a fun experience rather than just another art project.

Extensive programming has been done to ensure that each session is well organized and meaningful. Great effort is put into presenting new and interesting material as well as designing step by step easy to follow processes allowing each person to realize success.

Artfully Aging creates all of its own projects. Other creative art projects are also available. Examples of these are various crafts and card making. Projects are often theme based around the current season or holiday and include storytelling, reminiscing or songs pertaining to the theme. A favorite example for summer is a bright red cardinal. In 1995 she began working as a professional artist and developed a nationally recognized house portrait business. Also, during this time she worked as a caregiver for Seniors Homecare and later offered watercolor classes through Homewatch Caregivers, both local homecare companies. The Art of Living & Dying Well The way we live shapes the way we leave this world. This is a comforting statement. It means I have the privilege of being surrounded by those I love, at peace. To have the opportunity to express my love for my family and the people who supported and helped me grow into the man I am today. This idea of being at peace with oneself and others is at the heart of the medical care we refer to as hospice.

The Body, Mind and Spirit in Rhythm Alternative Hospice is a pioneer in the St. Louis area in providing true holistic healthcare as part of our standard of care. Complementary therapies are integrated with conventional medicine and are beneficial in achieving optimal patient goals. Therapies include: • Massage / Body work • Aromatherapy • Energy Work

The word, hospice, can be scary, and I understand your desire to stop reading at this point, but don’t stop. Life is rhythm, just as ocean waves move in harmony with the moon and the rotation of our home around the sun. In this same rhythm our lives move, ebb and flow, with times of growth and times of decline. It takes great courage to listen to this music of life and learn the steps of the dance. I am Alan Amos, Chaplain and Director at Alternative Hospice. I have been given the opportunity to express what hospice means to me. As a director, my goal along with my hospice team is to assist our clients and their families experience peace as they move closer to the final steps in the dance of life. More than ensuring pain is controlled and fears are limited, Alternative Hospice truly desires to aid those we serve understand the art of living and dying well. The phrase, the art of living and dying well, resonates with me. You see it is not about death, but life- entering into that place where hope and fear, certainty and doubt dance and move. It is joining in the dance of another and assisting them to continue to dance their dance with dignity and uniqueness even as the last steps are offered. At Alternative Hospice we do this several ways. Our medical team works with you, your family and your doctor to prepare a plan of care that fits who you are. Not what is right for most people, but what is right for you. Our Chaplains and Social Workers work with you to define what gives meaning, value and purpose to your life so that your spirituality is respected as a significant part of who you are. Lastly, we bring in Complementary Care Practitioners to teach and guide families about massage and body work, music therapy, and aromatherapy in order to bring peace and comfort to your life. When you, or a loved one, is entering this final dance of life, it would be our privilege to join with you. We would embrace the opportunity to talk with you about the services we provide in detail and assist you in finding the peace that reflects your life.

Recipes for Warm Summer Days and Nights Banana Lime Smoothie Two to three small bananas (one to two large) 1 cup of liquid of your choice: milk, nutmilk, coconut water 2 TBS of fresh lime juice 3 cardamon pods Add the peeled bananas, milk or coconut water and lime juice to the blender and blend well. Break each cardamom pod open and scoop out the little seeds. Crush them with a mortar and pestle and add to the blender. Blend again

If you freeze the bananas overnight it will be more like a thick and creamy milkshake and really refreshing!

Smashed Avocado Kale Salad One bunch of curly kale 1 medium avocado 1 TBS of nutritional yeast Drizzle of flaxseed oil Sprinkle of garlic flakes Celtic sea salt to taste Red pepper flakes to taste Wash the kale and pat dry. Remove the thick middle rib from each leaf. Stack the leaves on top of each other and roll from one end into a tight cigar shape. Start at one end of the roll and slice with a chef’s knife to achieve very thin strips. Toss the strips into a large bowl and sprinkle with sea salt. Massage the salt into the kale, (be fully present with this! Connect with the texture of the kale and notice the feel of the salt as you work. You might even take the time to marvel at everything that had to happen for that bunch of kale to wind up in your kitchen…the longer you massage the more tender the kale will become and the tastier it will be because of your awakened appreciation!) Add a drizzle of flaxseed oil. Olive oil will also work. Now for the really fun part! Toss chunks of the peeled avocado into the bowl and once again reach in and massage! Work the avocado into the kale, move it around, work some more. Eventually the kale will be coated with avocado and flaxseed oil as will your hands! Take a soft cloth or paper towel and gently clean your hands leaving behind as much of the nourishing oils as possible. Add the nutritional yeast, garlic flakes and red pepper flakes, toss everything together, (you can use salad tongs at this point), and enjoy. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2013

The Art, Zen and Truth of love online

by Ellen M. White

50 million singles in America are choosing online dating websites in hopes of finding that special connection. How does one know which is best for them? If a one-size-fits-all system of posting pictures and browsing doesn’t sound appealing, there is an alternative option online seekers can tap in to. Omsingles.com is a new truth-seeking liberating online dating resource encouraging creative freedom and self-expression over idealistic mainstream profile descriptions. It calls upon the hands of destiny and creative energy to guide the process. The name itself is indicative of a different force at play attracting authentic, evolved, self aware individuals onto a new stage where love can find expression more freely. Aiming to capture the attention of a yoga-practicing, creatively-oriented zen culture, omsingles.com offers a new approach at life, a distinct language in love and a powerful shared experience for community empowerment and validation. At its core, this platform enables a process for emotion, recognition, intuition and opportunity to serve as the link capable of connecting souls in to relationship and sense of belonging.

Questions such as “what do you do when you feel out of balance” or “which path currently describes yours” provide a glimpse in to a real emotion allowing a potential viewer to relate to someone’s life experience on a deeper level. “We believe people are capable of multi-dimensional possibilities and may not know exactly who they belong with, why or where. Omsingles.com offers a multitude of possibilities for connection and happiness,” says South Florida based founder Oliver A. Hoffmann. “Sometimes the connection begins with self.” Omsingles.com sends a strong, unique message and features an intriguing questionnaire that takes members through a journey of self-discovery as a first step in the process of relationship. It leads members to questions that enable better self understanding. Boasting a logo of “own your truth,” Omsingles.com believes love, relationship, destiny and happiness is not about looking perfect to someone else through an embellished profile of great achievements and smiling first dates. It is about feeling self-empowered in a non-judgmental atmosphere of shared understanding, and allowing the formula of destiny to ignite a process of its own where deeply stored energy and emotion releases and finds destination. Wow! Criteria such as age, geography, height, weight, professional title, preferred activity and family status matter, but less than spirit, evolution, potentiality, inner and outer beauty do. Nothing is beyond possibility in an open field of receptivity. People get to know each 24

Concierge Health Center Brings House Calls Back by Amy Woods

Concierge Health Services based out of Webster Groves provides a personal, multi-disciplinary approach for its members. Recently Yoga & Spa Magazine interviewed Dr. Judd Fuhr about this new approach to health care. His “patient first” mentality is a breath of fresh air to the ever changing and uncertain future of health care. 26

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2013

Y&S: What led you to this form of medical care and what do you like most about it? I have always loved patient care but have disliked dealing with the health insurance aspect. A long time ago, I said if I was going to start my own practice, it would be free of the insurance industry so my primary focus could be on my patients. Our goal at Concierge Health Center is to bring the "CARE" back into healthcare.

Y&S: Who needs concierge health care? Our belief is that concierge care is needed by everyone. We developed our clinic based on everyone being able to have access to our health center and our staff. We have monthly programs that start as low as $19, less than a dollar a day. We are also the only type of concierge practice with a multidisciplinary approach. Our members range from newborn to the elderly. Once you become a member there is no need to worry about that poison ivy you got over the weekend. You can just call our office, speak to one of our physicians and get treatment right away. It is like having an urgent care at your fingertips.

Dr. Kevin J. Martin with patient Y&S: What is a concierge health service in comparison to what most people experience with their current healthcare providers?

When we first opened our practice, we had a member come in who could not lift her arm. Previously she did not have access to proper healthcare and let this problem go untreated for over two months. Working with both myself and Dr. Martin we were able to help her move her arm normally again. Her average visits were about an hour and she never had to pay a co-pay or deductible. It was all included in her membership. Each visit, she would always expect to pay something, but was shocked when she left our offices being told that no payment was necessary for an office visit. It was a surprise to her every time. For more information go to www.conciergehealthcenter.com or call (314) 802-7117. Mention our article in Yoga and Spa magazine and receive a FREE 15 minute hydromassage session.

Concierge Health Center enables patients to have immediate access to their physician 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for a phone consultation, to even a house call. Our physicians spend as much time as needed with you to find the best course of treatment. The majority of current general practice physicians spend 20-30 minutes with a new patient and 10 minutes on follow up visits. We do not feel that is enough time to learn about our members. That is why our new patient exams last about 90 minutes and follow up visits range from 30-45 as needed. What makes us different from other concierge practices is that we offer a multi-disciplinary approach to our members including chiropractic services, massage therapy, nutrition and weight loss programs. Our goal is to offer several preventative and wellness care services to keep our members as healthy as possible. Our medical staff has over 40 years of combined experience to offer these types of services.

I never feel as if I'm "caught up." I'm not even sure what that means. But I do know there are plenty of nights I lay in bed wishing I would have chosen to paint instead of folding yet another load of laundry. I seem to always put the household chores and demands of inanimate objects before my own needs. And, if I do that for too many days in a row I become a very unpleasant person and I hear my dear southern husband say, "You need to sweeten your tone." Why is it that I feel the need to get everything completed, tied up, or even perfect before I take care of me, be it exercise, art, or even healthy cooking? I don't know where the "me last" mentality came from. I think it's very common, if not a natural state for many people. I've come to realize that doing something for myself makes me a better human being. It would be wonderful for the house to be in perfect order before I took the time to work on a watercolor, but the reality is that if I wait for order I would never paint. It’s hard to walk away from the chore at hand to feed my heart, my soul, my creative spirit. However, when I do it, and then return to the chaos that sometimes defines my life, I seem to handle its demands much better. I encourage you to feed your heart today in spite of the clutter that may surround you — Play that instrument. Dip that paint brush. Write that poem. A Healing Retreat in Ubud, Bali by Erin McAllister

Life works in vastly confounding, amazing, and sometimes excruciatingly painful ways, leading you to places you never thought possible. If you told me a year ago, or even six months ago, that I would be on the other side of the world doing yoga among dragonflies, sipping on fresh-from-the-source coconut water, and receiving treatments from traditional Balinese healers, I would have laughed and asked if you had me confused with a certain famous woman writer who travelled across the world to eat, pray and love. At the end 2012, my mother died unexpectedly, and I was the unfortunate loved one to discover her lifeless body on her bedroom floor. My worst nightmare was realized, but I am fortunate in that my mother always taught me the value of self exploration and wellness. Because of these lessons, I have been able to focus on healing. Yoga has become integral to this process. When a good friend of mine asked if I'd be interested in accompanying her to Bali for a retreat at Ubud Sari, two words went through my mind: “hell” and “yes.”

My friend, an anthropologist seasoned in Indonesian culture, summed up Ubud perfectly to me before our trip: “Hindu heaven.” While Ubud Sari is a “resort,” it may not be a resort in the Westernized sense of the word (no golf courses here, folks). It also might not hold all of the luxuries that one might expect from a typical “resort.” Our room was small and minimal, designed to quiet the mind from distraction. I fell asleep to the sound of frogs, a nearby waterfall, and crickets. On our first day, our program leader explained our entire schedule for the week. We set out to complete a six-day juice fast program. A typical day included a sunrise rice paddy walk, followed by fresh juice, an hour of hatha yoga, meditation, and a variety of massage treatments. Ubud Sari specializes in juice fasting paired with colonics. Because the combination of these two processes typically leaves one feeling rather sluggish, we opted to omit colonics from our program so we could explore the town of Ubud. The resort is also known for its massage treatments, my favorite of which was the deep tissue. The treatment is provided by

Jadi, a traditional Balinese healer. I was told by another guest that his techniques were unorthodox. I went into the treatment room somewhat nervous. My anxieties were immediately put at ease by Jadi's amazingly positive presence. Within seconds, he found my troubled sciatic nerve, and immediately relieved my pain, burping as he removed blockages in my body. I later learned that this is customary practice – Jadi was removing toxic air in my body, then expelling it. Halfway through the massage, he asked me if I enjoyed rock music (one of my first true loves). Before I knew it, we were singing Beatles and Elvis tunes together, further putting me at ease. So there I was, topless and fully exposed, singing “Hey Jude” with a smiling Balinese healer. This isn't something that happens everyday. My journey to Ubud Sari was not one that I will ever forget. Every time I saw something beautiful during my stay, I thought of my mother. I then realized that she brought me there. Because she lived, there I was, having the time of my life. I realized what I have known all along; that everything is connected. Every butterfly, smiling face, beautiful sunrise, every inhale and exhale are all intertwined. In this realization, my healing began.

Aerial Yoga & Pilates

by Samantha Sauer; photos by Mindy Campbell

Yoga and Pilates are more than exercise routines. They ensure you are taking care of your mind and spirit as much as your physical health. Body Mind and Soul, a traditional Pilates Studio with a therapeutic approach, has undergone changes since its start in 1999. Their basic mission has remains the same, to adapt to each clients needs. To do so we have incorporated stretching routines, thai massage, myofascial release with foam rollers and balls, yoga, meditation and most recently Aerial Yoga and Pilates. Aerial Yoga and Pilates combines traditional yoga poses and Pilates movements with the physical training of aerial acrobatics. While a low hanging fabric hammock supports the students body, the student learns how to achieve proper alignment with traditional yoga and Pilates routines. At Body Mind and Soul, we focus more on the therapeutic side more than the acrobatics. Even if a

student is not yet strong enough to support their body weight and the balance for certain exercises, the support of the fabric helps them build strength and foot stability. The hammock allows for deep stretching while certain body parts are suspended in the fabric. The support allows for areas of the body to target and strengthened, such as the shoulders, torso, and hand strength and gripping capability. The alignment can be achieved in the suspended movement. Students safety and satisfaction are our main priority. Students are carefully guided into inversion positions (the Pilates exercise of hanging upside down by the hands). Being in this upside down position allows decompression of the spine The hammock assists in this by gently supporting and pulling on the spine to open the vertebral column. These weightless positions strengthen the core, stretch the muscles, help heal injuries through allowing deeper

relaxation. These exercise routines can be especially beneficial to anyone trying to regain their strength as part of physical therapy. The aging population can work to improve their ability to balance better. Aerial Yoga and Pilates can be practiced by anyone because all the exercises and poses can be modified to suit the individual. For all our exercise routines we focus on the individual student's skill level and needs. the first three sessions are private to help us evaluate your physical needs. This also gives us an opportunity to teach each student proper safety. If it's determined the student can progress to group sessions, they are put into groups of no more than four people. This allows students to have an enjoyable group experience while also getting individual attention from instructors. At Body Mind and Soul Pilates Studio, we do everything to ensure the client is getting the safest and most effective experience possible.

Happiness is an Inside Job

by Rebecca Wiederkehr Remind yourself how you feel being in a spa or your yoga class or a great meditation; peaceful and calm, all is right with the world. Wouldn’t you love to stay in that space more of the time? We all would. Most of our issues and stresses come in relationship dynamics with self and others. All conflict occurs when people are in low moods. The bottom-line is when we are in a low mood we get faulty information from the brain and we believe it as true and act on it. This causes much grief. If you look at the chart here note the red represents that faulty brain information. These insecurities keep us thinking negatively, creating low moods. On the other hand look at the gold in the chart to notice what represents a high mood. Here we are aware of our goodness and wisdom. This is our innocence, our natural state of being, God Within or Mind, that formless form of energy that runs through everything. This never leaves us. It is who we are. It is just a matter of bringing our

attention back to this awareness, our happy place, when we get distracted. It is my belief that this gold is all there is and we make up the red part. The red literally exists only in our head, from our past. We have these negative thoughts that create uncomfortable feelings. We keep remembering and re-abusing ourselves, building stories to fit these thoughts and feelings. True, many unfortunate and painful things could have happened to us – serious trauma, unhappy childhood. We can’t change our history, our stored memories, but we can de-stress them. We may need assistance to de-stress. Imagine a vertical line going from the center of the gold to the bottom edge of the red with ‘high mood’ at the top and ‘low mood’ at the bottom. We are all constantly moving up and down that continuum at any given time. When I heard these ideas about low mood

or high mood, (not good or bad mood), and that everyone across the board is experiencing them, something shifted in me. I stopped my judgment of my moods and saw them as normal. Anything can cause a low mood; our thoughts, low blood sugar, not enough sleep, stressed with a deadline and on and on. We can learn to have moods without moods having us. A sure measure that we are in a low mood and drawing from the ‘red circle’ is when we want to engage in conflict with someone else, either verbally or in our head. Our best strategy is to stop engaging and keep quiet. We are caught in a problem with no solutions in sight. It is amazing when we let go and relax, moving into a higher mood, allowing our head to clear, that either solutions present themselves or there is no longer a problem. It is so important to support each other in our moods and let them be. When two persons are in a low mood we must learn to keep quiet until someone gets their bearings. We will learn that interacting with each other’s goodness and remembering who we are can create a happy healthy place to be and will be a lot more fun. It takes discipline, patience and forgiveness of self and others while learning to ‘live from the inside out’. Happiness really IS an inside job. “I know what I should be doing. I even think I know how to do it. But I just can’t seem to make myself.”

We can feel stuck in making a decision, in a relationship, in guilt, in resentment…in really just about anything. However, at the end of the day we are only really stuck if we choose to be.

One Thing Different Not sure where to start? Choose one thing you know you can change, and focus on that one new change. The next week choose another. Provide yourself with these accomplishments to build the confidence in yourself that you can make changes.

Getting unstuck doesn’t mean you must make all the changes at once. Many times we are unable to focus on the small steps and get distracted and overwhelmed by the bigger picture, therefore paralyzing us in fear of taking any action. Getting unstuck is simply taking the next small step of doing something in a different way. Stop rewriting or focusing on the master to do list. What can be done right now? What needs to be done right now? Focus on the doable and let go of the rest, for now. What are 6-8 steps you can accomplish today and focus on those. If a goal is too big, be honest with yourself and break it down into smaller goals.

Talk About It Simply saying it out loud to someone is enough to give a new insight into yourself or what you need to do to make a change. Things are less powerful and overwhelming when spoken than when they are spinning around in your head. If you aren’t ready to open up to someone, writing things out in a journal can be very powerful. Writing your thoughts out helps make them less daunting and helps us feel less overwhelmed. Writing it out is not to make a permanent record for us to reread and ruminate on, it is simply to help let it go.

Be Accountable to Someone Tell a friend or family member about your specific goal and ask them to help hold you accountable. Give them the positive and supportive language of how to ask about your progress and when to ask. Many times working with a therapist or coach comes with less threat than our family and friends. A therapist or a coach can provide a neutral soundboard to process with through your progress. We can be there to walk alongside you while you make changes, and at times push you from behind when you need it and encourage you when you come up against any roadblocks.

Focus Dedicate time everyday to working on getting unstuck and moving forward. Even if you can only spare 10 minutes, make the time to feel productive. It is very helpful to disconnect during this time; no TV, internet, or phone. Setting a designated time helps to let it go of the worry outside of that time of focus. You know you have it scheduled somewhere in your day. It also helps in making it feel doable because it’s a shorter period of time. Set a timer with an alarm to keep you on track.

Believe and Let Go Believe that you are capable of changing your life. Let go of past experiences, learn from them, and integrate those lessons into today only in how much they apply. The desire for things to be different is the most important piece to make change possible. Sometimes we just have to figure out the next best, small step. We are all capable of that first step toward the desired change. As Jim Rohn once said, “Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.”

HYPNOSIS WORKS!

You can’t CHANGE Your WEIGHT Until You CHANGE YOUR MIND! Hypnotism can be applied successfully as a tool in psychotherapy, medical and dental pain management, to enhance academic achievement, to overcome fears and stage fright, to improve sleep, to increase athletic performance and other applications, however most people think of Habit Control, smoking cessation, weight loss, nailbiting etc. When I was first introduced to Hypnotism for weight loss, I was a skeptic. Then I witnessed the powerful hypnotic phenomenon in the sessions and the dramatic results of the clients. Many clients lost 20, 40, 50 even 100 pounds with hypnosis sessions! When I applied the very basic techniques of induction and hypnotic suggestion with clients, the immediate results were dramatic. The evidence for using Hypnotism to control habits, like overeating, was very convincing. . Years later, I am still amazed when clients tap into their own “hypnotic ability” and change old habits like smoking or overeating. One client had gained 100 pounds since she stopped smoking 10 years before. She was overeating at night, so I utilized “hypnotic amnesia” and gave her the posthypnotic suggestion that after her evening meal she would “forget” about food until morning. This woman lost 103 pounds in one year. Another client was drinking enormous amounts of soda pop each day. So I used a “hypnotic aversion” technique so he would have zero desire to drink soda pop. He lost 40 pounds very quickly and 4 years later he still has not gone back to drinking soda pop. Some habits are so unconscious Hypnotism is the very best approach. In many cases I help the clients make unconscious habits into conscious thoughts and decisions. My clinic, Personal Motivation Hypnosis Clinic www.hypnoprogram.com has been helping clients for over 10 years in Illinois. In April I opened my new St .Louis, MO. Office at Two Cityplace Drive at I-270 and

Olive. Because Habit Control is observable and measureable, I leave the office each day happy knowing I have helped people improve their health and wellness. I especially enjoy helping people of all ages with weight loss/ control. It is very rewarding to watch clients increase their confidence, improve their mobility and fitness and decrease their health problems. With two successful clinics in Illinois and a new clinic in St. Louis, MO. William Mitchell is a Board Certified Instructor for the National Guild of Hypnotists (BCH,CI) and regularly graduates trained practitioners Certified by the NGH. He has served as Faculty at the NGH Convention for 8 years. Since 1997, he has hypnotized thousands in group seminars and currently works with several hundred one-on-one clients each year. He is also a former adjunct faculty member at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, IL serving on their Complementary and Alternative Medicine Panel. William Mitchell offers a FREE Screening at Personal Motivation Hypnosis Clinic (I-270 and Olive – Creve Coeur – 2 City Place Dr. – Second Floor - St. Louis, MO 877-708-5822). Academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)from Culver-Stockton College with both a Religion and Philosophy major and a Missouri Secondary Teaching Certificate in Social Studies. A graduate

Bonnie Marcin was 58 years old at the time of her treatment, and she lost 93 pounds! theological education at Texas Christian University Brite Divinity School and Phillips University Graduate Seminary in Oklahoma with an earned Master of Divinity (M.Div.). While serving congregations in Missouri, Nebraska, Kentucky, and Texas he did doctoral work at TCU. The Rev. Mitchell is currently the Pastor of a small congregation, The First Baptist Church of Stonington, IL, affiliated with the moderate American Baptists. Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2013

Natural Solutions for Seemingly Invisible Illnesses An invisible illness is a disease that you really cannot see or point to in a traditional sense. An invisible illness presents as a cluster of symptoms that wax and wane and eventually progress over time. It may happen with a “snowball effect,” in which a minor imbalance within the body produces a cascade of biological triggers that can eventually lead to poor health and the development of a chronic illness. It is an illness in which individuals feel sick more often than not, requiring alterations in their lifestyles. Identification of an invisible illness is important for health care therapies and validation provides a sense of knowing you are not crazy, this condition is very real. Eventually an invisible illness presents as a diagnosable disease and at the root an invisible illness is an autoimmune condition. Unfortunately, an autoimmune disease does not limit destruction to one organ or system, but can attack multiple areas of the body. By the time patients are actually diagnosed with an autoimmune disease such as IBS, Hashimoto’s, or Rheumatoid Arthritis, the patients will frequently have additional chronic conditions or symptom clusters. Two of the most common symptoms reported are pain and fatigue which can have a tremendous impact upon lifestyle. Autoimmune conditions attack the thyroid gland, adrenal gland, nerves, joints, muscles, and a number of other organs. It is important to understand that the problem is not isolated to one organ or system, but multiple body systems are affected, requiring a holistic approach to patient care. In addition, the physical, biochemical stress can lead to mental stress and it can become a not so merry merry-go-round. Sandy, a patient at Wellness Alternatives, told us, “One of my first symptoms was the weird sensation of internal trembling which made me feel crazy and scared. Eventually the tremors became visible to others and I became very conscious of trying to hide them. I didn’t want people to ask me what’s wrong, because when I tried to explain that I didn’t know, 38

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2013

they would look away uncomfortably. In the end, their silence and my nervousness just made the whole situation worse.” If the problem is your immune system, healing the immune system is the only real plan for health. The first step to helping those with an invisible illness is testing. There are specific tests to determine why the immune system is malfunctioning. These tests provide diagnostic information to assess the levels of neurological involvement, endocrine and hormone balance, and immune triggers. In addition, the tests provide information as to which parts of the immune system are inhibited or over stimulated. Often, the immune system is a defense system that is running out of control. Testing is essential to aid practitioners in managing autoimmune conditions. (For more information about testing, visit STLWA.com, Health Library, Testing.) Treatment and therapies should focus on the digestive, immune and detoxification health which will provide a ‘calming’ effect on the whole body. To do this, EVERYTHING must be evaluated and addressed ALL AT ONCE. This is where Functional Medicine offers success for autoimmune conditions. According to Dr. David Peterson, D.C., “I utilize Functional Medicine principles because my goal is to find interventions when imbalances become apparent before they are chronic and irreversible. It is at this point in a patient relationship that I see patients identifying with the term invisible illness. They are sick and don’t really know why. It is my job to find out why.” He continues, “Identifying and controlling influencing factors and triggers such as nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle habits and providing therapies to support the gastrointestinal, endocrine, the immune systems is where Functional Medicine is effective. An underlying common root cause will affect body organs, neurological pathways, and biochemical processes all at the same time. Functional Medicine offers natural solutions for seemingly invisible illnesses.”

If you have an immune system problem, you need to support the immune system.

Seven Steps to Treating an Invisible Illness 1. Check for hidden infections like bacteria, mold, yeast, parasites with the help of a doctor and treat the infection. Bacteria, mold, and parasites manipulate your immune system for their survival. 2. Check for hidden food allergens with IgG food testing. A practical option may be adopting the Anti-inflammatory Paleo Diet, which is designed to eliminate most food allergens. 3. Get tested for neurotransmitter imbalances; this is a saliva and urine test that any doctor can order. 4. Check your immune status. Autoimmune disease is a TH1 condition in the early stages and a TH17 dominant situation in chronic conditions lasting three months or more. 5. Calm and quiet your immune system. Avoid supplements that provoke an uncontrolled immune response. Use nutrients such as fish oil, vitamin C, vitamin D, and turmeric to help calm your immune response naturally. 6. Get a thorough gastrointestinal checkup. 80% of the immune system in located with the gastrointestinal system. Some patients exhibit GI symptoms and others do not. Gastrointestinal health is foundational to all health including mental well-being. DNA stool testing by Metametrix is the gold standard. 7. Manage stress. Practice deep relaxation like yoga, deep breathing, biofeedback, or massage, because stress worsens the immune response. Get moderate exercise.

Top 5 Reasons

to Hire a Certified Personal Trainer

Kirsten Stevens, LPN 2718 Sutton Blvd., 63143 (314) 488-6441 www.mirrorimagelifestylefitness.com 40

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2013

Whether you need to lose those last stubborn pounds or are just beginning your journey to a happier and healthier you, hiring a certified personal trainer is your best bet for results. There are many resources out there for fitness and health oriented people. Many people wonder if it isn’t smarter, more affordable and less hassle to do it yourself? Sure, it can be more affordable to buy a gym membership or workout DVD for those who have the discipline to stick with the program. Personally, I can only listen to the same music, hear the same chit chat and perform the same exercises so many times before I lose my marbles. It doesn’t matter how great the trainer or how much science is used to back the newest fitness trend, doing and hearing the same thing over and over gets old and so does your workout. The greatest challenge in trying to get in shape is maintaining motivation. A good personal trainer keeps you motivated and enthusiastic about your workout and you get results. Let’s clarify what a Certified Personal Trainer actually does and how you can benefit.

1. Accountability Paying for personal training sessions and having a scheduled appointment will force you to exercise even when you don’t feel like it. This is especially true if your trainer shows up at your door to train you at home. This kind of commitment gets great results. You are saying to yourself, your body and your trainer that you are ready to transform.

Personal Trainer & Fitness Expert

3. Results A trainer will tailor a workout and nutrition program that is individualized to meet your specific goals and needs. The trainer will change your workout often to prevent weight and strength plateaus, thus expediting your results.

4. Save Time and Energy A trainer will take the guesswork out of what to do with all the equipment at the gym. You will get in and out of your workout in less time and with better results. Personal trainers that come to you, save you drive time that is better spent on actually working out.

5. Safety This is one of the top reasons to hire a personal trainer. A trainer will be sure to keep your safety top priority throughout your sessions. To prevent injuries your trainer will show you proper form and technique during execution of an exercise. If you have been wrestling with the idea of hiring a certified personal trainer, refer to this list. Personal trainers have no greater desire than to help you reach your health and fitness goals. Good luck and remember, it is never too late to be what you might have been.

2. Motivation Living in an instant gratification society can hinder our ability to stay motivated. We want results yesterday. A trainer will keep you motivated by giving you ongoing encouragement, support and positive feedback as well as keep track of your progress. Seeing positive results is always the best motivation.

Green Living

It’s Easy Being GREEN

KIND soap company in Webster Groves was born of a desire to care for sensitive skin. Fastforward several years to present day, and it does just that – plus so much more. With a new, larger retail location, and it’s availability in stores like Whole Foods, KIND soap company is getting the word out that what you put on your skin really does matter, and that KIND products can not only make a huge difference in the look, feel, and health of your skin, but to your entire wellbeing. The KIND philosophy is to always be three things. KIND to your skin, KIND to the earth, and KIND to others. Being KIND to your skin, means never formulating a product with the known skin irritants, hormone disruptors, and carcinogenic chemicals that are commonly found in other body care products. The highest quality natural ingredients are chosen. All products are free of synthetic fragrance, color and dye, petroleum by-products, phthalates, formaldehyde releasing agents, parabens, and sulfates. Being KIND to the earth involves eco-conscious decisions about packaging and processes at every turn. The goal is to REDUCE deforestation and depletion of natural resources by utilizing treefree labels, water free printing, and vegetable based inks … to ELIMINATE toxic emissions and polluted air and water by using only

biodegradable product ingredients, and wind energy for printing.... to STOP the ever-growing mounds of non-biodegradable trash on land and sea by encouraging reuse and recycling of all packaging... and to REVERSE the negative effects human actions have had on the climate by buying locally when possible. The third part of the philosophy is to always be KIND to others. A portion of every product sold goes to the Autism Speaks organization, in addition to funding many other worthy organizations, such as the Missouri Humane Society, through product sales and donations throughout the year. KIND also partners with WORTH Industries, a sheltered workshop in north St. Louis, for the labor of product packaging. Jean Scholtes, the founder of KIND soap company adds, “Our goal in creating the family of KIND products was to not only be "natural for natural sake", but to also be the best product you've ever used, period. So many times we sacrifice one thing for another - effective OR natural, taste OR healthy, never both - well, we've turned that notion on its head.... We offer a BETTER, more enjoyable product, that also happens to be natural, safe, and healthy.” Yoga & Spa Magazine • Summer 2013

Green House Gases Understanding the Need For More Solar Power

by Cindy Bambini Most days we take clean air for granted. When I pass a power plant and witness the thick black smoke drifting into the air, I take notice. There are some air quality issues we can't control like pollen. Others, like pollution from burning coal and gasoline are in our power to regulate. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the largest source of pollutants to our environment. There are four main types of GHG. 1. Carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil), solid waste, trees and wood products, and also as a result of certain chemical reactions. Carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere when it is absorbed by plants. Carbon dioxide is the largest source of GHG emissions in the U.S., making up 84% of the GHG mix. 2. Methane makes up 9% 3. Nitrous oxide makes up 5% 4. Fluorinated gases make up 2% How these gases affect the air quality depends on how many of these different gases are in the atmosphere, the concentration of gas particles in the air (larger emissions of greenhouse gases lead to higher concentrations) and, how long they stay in the atmosphere. Each can remain in the atmosphere anywhere from just a few years to thousands of years. However, all remain in the atmosphere long enough to become mixed. This means that the amount of GHG measured in the atmosphere is roughly the same all over the world regardless of the source of the emissions. I help my clients change the source of their energy production to solar. Switching to solar power means that less fossil fuels are being burned and in turn less greenhouse gas emissions are in the atmosphere. With cleaner air everyone’s time outdoors can be more enjoyable and healthier. To learn more about converting to solar power for you business, please contact: Cindy Bambini, 314.403.0564, cindy.bambini@brightergy.com.

Y&S Interview

B3 Fitness Studio in South City by Amy Woods

B3 Fitness Studio in South City recently opened its doors. Brienne Lockridge is the owner and instructor of this fabulous new fitness studio. Yoga & Spa Magazine recently met with her to learn more about her studio and the BarreAmped method which she teaches. Her energy and excitement for her new studio and classes creates an encouraging and rewarding experience for those new to BarreAmped. modify it, so even someone who has been a stranger to a gym can participate for the full hour. Occasionally, there may be a little bit of humor and fun amidst the focus. And finally, you will find a little relaxation at the end of the workout that may feel a bit like a private class because of the personal touch that I intentionally add to each class.

Y&S: What led you to the Barre style exercise? The results I saw with my own body. I have been teaching group fitness since 1999, and have tried it all. My son was born in April of 2011 and I knew I didn’t want to wait a full year to lose the baby weight like I did with his sister. My friend Rebekah Byrd, the owner of BarreAmped Nashville, started to teach me the method as soon as I was cleared to workout post birth, and I was hooked. I searched St. Louis City where I live for classes like it and came up dry, so I started adding BarreAmped-style moves into my weight lifting classes at my local gym. I was hungry for more, so in March I went to Nashville to become certified in BarreAmped and trained with the amazing Amy Weber. There are no studios offering BarreAmped in Illinois or Missouri, so I’m very excited to be the first in the area. Y&S: What can a person expect from one of your classes? BarreAmped is extremely form-specific with hands-on correction. I explain everything: eleven years of teaching special education seeps out of my pores. My clients will each get a tough workout, but I am able to 50

Y&S: What makes you different than other Barre method fitness studios? I honestly have not taken many Barre classes. That was one of my main driving factors creating B3 Fitness Studio. I love St. Louis City and want it to have all of the things other big city dwellers have access to. Barre is not something that our “bar” town is familiar with. I want to change that! Once I knew I wanted to teach Barre, I started researching different brands. I was drawn to BarreAmped’s focus on form. Form, form, form is key to the integrity of this method. We take the time to actually correct and make sure the client is in the proper position with proper form, so they get the most benefit. They walk away knowing that they are doing each exercise correctly, and that we as teachers actually care about that–and them. This aligned well with the way I was currently teaching my fitness classes. Y&S: What is the philosophy of your studio? My main goal was to bring Barre to the city. I chose BarreAmped, which is one of the only methods that allow you to have other classes in your studio. I sought out all of the amazing instructors who have lead me in various classes over the years. I knew I could not go wrong bringing Kim Winn, Clayton Delany, Kori Zide, Dawn Pawlitz, and Kate Fox to my studio, which has a strong commitment towards personalized service, and individual attention for those seeking to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Y&S: What do you hope to see B3 Fitness become? I would love to bring cutting edge fitness and wellness to the Midwest in a multi-room studio. My company’s name is French for wellness, so all things that fit in that category are fair game: Soul Cycle, massage, and other things found in fitness and wellness studios in other large cities. I want St. Louis City dwellers, just like me, as well as other moms, teachers, shift workers, to be able to access the same things. B3’s rates are lower than most studio fitness. Y&S: "Momtrepeneur" - we love them, tell us how do you run a business, home and family? Funny you should ask. I have said that this whole experience has set me up to win the next edition of “The Apprentice- Moms in Mini-Vans”. My kids are somewhat easygoing and are just happy to be with their mom, even if we are driving around town getting fire extinguishers up to code and picking up items I found for resale online for the studio. I offer youth services at B3, and my two children are the top clients of the “green room”. I squeeze in marketing between making lunch and playing in the yard. My kids come and lead themselves in their own private “monkey barre” class while I do paper work. I send emails with “Sophia the First” music in the background. I trust that this is what is right for my family and hope that my studio brings joy not only to my clients, but also to my family as well. They cheer when I tell them we are going to the studio and cry when I leave to teach class and they are not invited. It makes me excited to think that my daughter might follow in my footsteps and do the same thing her momma did. That thought makes me happy.
