A new year is here, and it's filled with opportunity. The purpose of the physical practice of yoga is to prepare us for meditation. Relieving physical stress, yoga creates a surrender of both body and mind, allowing access to the deep silence of meditation. It is in this state of non-resistance that we can create the life we truly desire. Spending time in this silence daily, quieting the mind, heals the brain. In his book The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Deepak Chopra tells us that pure potentiality is part of our intrinsic nature. It is simply up to us to recognize and act upon this potentiality. Inspiring ideas and creative thoughts flow throughout the day. If we do not take the time to be still and hear them, we will live in a state of constant mind chatter, fear, stress and anxiety. Our western philosophy of working harder to create more of everything is essentially backwards. This philosophy drains the mind, body and spirit. Wouldn't it feel better to be still and attract all that you desire? In the words of Buddha,“health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth.” Our mission for the new year at Yoga and Spa Magazine is to help you continue to enhance your health, wealth and quality of living. May you embrace the infinite possibilities that lie ahead!

Vibrant Life Issue We have just ended one year and are commencing another. In the heart of winter, we can look back at our previous year's accomplishments and celebrate as we also look forward with hope to new, vibrant beginnings. As I take time to reflect on this past year, I feel it is the perfect time to wipe my slate clean and start over. What did I do really well? What could I have done better? Moving forward, we can create goals and dreams for the new year. What do I truly want out of life? How do I want to feel every day? What are my desires, hopes and dreams? How can I best serve the world with my talents and skills? And of course, the million dollar question that I ask myself: What can I do to improve my health and vitality in order to be my best in everything I do? Vibrant energy is key to making our dreams a reality. In this Vibrant Life Issue, as you read the stories and learn about all the wonderful products and services we have right here in St. Louis, take time to see what resonates in helping to create a better, healthier, more vibrant you. Decide what small steps you can implement to help you shine more brightly than ever as you set the direction for your new year.

LIVING FIT
Do you have neck or back pain? by Dr. Ed Ernstrom
New therapy reduces – or eliminates - pain for many involves the production of high levels of pain killing chemicals such as endorphins, enkephalins, and opiods from the brain and adrenal gland. This is the newest approach to safely and comfortably treating the actual cause of low back (lumbar) or neck (cervical) pain… without surgery. Back pain sufferers with bulging, herniated discs, sciatica (pain shooting down a person’s legs), degenerative disc conditions and more, finally have an alternative to often risky, expensive surgery. There are thousands of these therapies around the country, but Aspen Laser Therapy appears to offer the best results and the best longterm benefits. More than 14 million office visits for back pain are reported annually. It’s the second most common reason that people visit their doctors. The results of these visits are predictable. The options are rest, pain medications, and physical therapy. Chronic sufferers looking for help often hear there are only two real paths… live with the pain or undergo surgery. Aspen Laser Therapy is a non-invasive procedure which offers not only pain relief but even long-term results for many of the typical causes of back pain. Also, due to less inflammation, there is less edema and less pain. Another pain blocking mechanism

Aspen Laser Therapy, which we offer in our clinic, is an exciting treatment plan. Combined with core stabilization exercises and therapeutic rehabilitation, Aspen Laser Therapy promotes the bodies own healing power. Helping our patients get their lives back to where they were before their back and/or neck pain is what we strive to do in our practice. Aspen Laser Therapy, along with a proactive approach to the patients’ rehabilitation, in my opinion, is the best way to achieve longlasting results. Pain is the body’s way of telling you something is wrong, and is usually the only
indication that you have structural damage in your discs. Pain relief is usually the first sign that things are getting better. However we stress to our patients that pain relief does not mean your discs are healed. We recommend our patients to stay with the prescribed treatment protocol we recommend in order to achieve the best long-term results.
Some of the benefits of Aspen Laser Therapy are: ❶ This is a safe, non-surgical procedure:
no injections, no needles, and totally non-invasive. ❷ Recovery time, if any, is minimal ➌ Patients can be in a comfortable position
during treatments ➍ Patients are always fully clothed and
can talk with the doctor during treatments Ernstrom is the founder of Ernstrom Spinal Rehab and has been treating athletes and everyday people for the better part of 16 years. Between Aspen Laser Therapy, RockTape, RockBlades, and Chiropractic he will help you reach your physical goals. Are You Determined and Motivated?
Loving Yourself is a Radical Step by Karen Gelb, Raindrop Colon Hydrotherapy
Studies show the average American carries an extra 3-15 pounds of weight, leftover from toxicity stuck in the colon. During the holiday season, Americans eat more inflammatory foods, experience the potential for more stress, and tend to be exposed to more viruses and germs. This creates joint pain, weight gain, bloating, heartburn and other uncomfortable symptoms. Colonics, especially when combined with specific supplements and essential oils, hydrate the body and allow the release of toxins, which helps the movement of stuck emotions, cravings and habitual patterns in the body. This allows weight loss by flushing out the stagnant pounds of waste and reducing the gas and bloating that interferes with the body’s ability to release completely and efficiently. People who receive regular colonics report a flatter tummy, increased energy and clarity, easier digestion and glowing skin. This is the time to have a clean slate, before the usual New Year Resolutions start and fizzle out, just like last year. New changes can begin at any time, and as this year comes to an end, it is a good time for evaluating priorities and a renewed selfcommitment. Now is always the best time of year to commit to a healthy new you. Inner
cleansing creates outer cleansing, a glowing new you to move into a new year.

Healthy Brains Across the Lifespan:
How do we promote successful aging? By David Kaufman, Ph.D., ABPP
4. Physical Activity Exercise improves brain health and lowers an individual’s risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease.
As a result of numerous medical advances, individuals today have longer life spans and older adults make up a greater proportion of the population than ever before. Since old age increases the risk for specific types of health problems, there is growing interest in understanding the secrets to successful aging. Aging affects both body and mind. While there is still need for greater scientific study of this topic, there are ways to improve brain health. They include:
1. Stress Reduction Meditation, deep breathing, and getting a good night’s sleep all help to improve mood, memory and brain function.
2. Cognitive Stimulation While brain games are not likely to reverse memory loss, cognitive activity serves as a protective factor against dementia and can compensate for normal forgetfulness.
3. Healthy Diet A healthy brain diet includes vegetables, fruits, and omega-3 fats from fish; refined sugars and processed foods should be avoided.

Many older adults fear that they will lose their memory as they age. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America coordinates a national memory screening program every year during the month of November (www.nationalmemoryscreening.org). Saint Louis University also offers a free, year-round memory screening program. To learn more, call 314-977-2296, and specify that you are calling about memory screening. When memory concerns become worrisome, neuropsychological assessment clarifies the nature and severity of the problem. This involves more than just memory screening: to ensure an accurate assessment, multiple areas of thinking, reasoning, and problem solving are tested. This is particularly important because some forms of cognitive decline are reversible. Early detection and diagnosis can improve the rate of improvement. If memory loss is associated with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, medications and lifestyle changes can help to increase quality of life. David Kaufman, Ph.D., ABPP, is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist, psychology professor at Saint Louis University, and owner of Gateway Neuropsychology, located at 989 Gardenview Office Parkway, St. Louis, MO 63141. A Functional Approach to Taming Blood Sugar and Inflammation Most people with diabetes know the importance of managing their insulin levels. But what they may not know are the benefits of functional medicine, which utilizes diet, exercise, stress management, detoxification and nutrition to manage insulin and blood sugar.
To understand how all these tools apply, it's helpful to know how insulin works. Insulin and Blood Sugar: A Balancing Act Insulin helps keep glucose (sugar) levels in the bloodstream within normal range. When you eat, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, our primary energy source. When glucose enters the bloodstream, the pancreas responds by producing insulin, which enables glucose to enter the body's tissues. Excess glucose is stored in the liver; when needed to sustain blood sugar between meals, the liver releases sugar and the pancreas responds with more insulin to help it enter cells. This balancing act keeps blood sugar stable. When the pancreas secretes little or no insulin (type I diabetes), when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or when your cells are resistant to insulin (insulin resistance, common in type II diabetes), sugar levels in the bloodstream can get too high. Chronic high blood sugar can lead to complications such as blindness, nerve damage, and kidney damage.
Managing Insulin with a Multi-Faceted Approach Certain factors affect your body's need for insulin. Manage them well, and you'll keep your blood sugar stable with a minimum of insulin.
Diet ✓ Eat regularly. Not eating regularly and eating larger meals causes drops and spikes in blood sugar and insulin, driving insulin resistance. If blood sugar is a problem, better to eat smaller, more frequent meals to keep blood sugar and insulin levels stable. ✓ Avoid fast food. Processed and fast foods drive inflammation, which causes insulin resistance and other disease processes. It also increases cortisol levels, which can increase blood sugar levels.
✓ Get tested for food allergies. Food sensitivities cause immune and inflammatory responses, which causes insulin resistance. Many people have food sensitivities they don't know about. ✓ Pay attention to Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load. Glycemic Index measures the insulin response your body has after eating a food. The higher the number, the more insulin your pancreas needs to secrete. Glycemic load is the amount of that food eaten.
Exercise Get out and move! Fat cells have insulin receptors. Exercise burns calories and fat; fewer cells mean less need for insulin. And, when you exercise, your muscles need more energy to fire and insulin receptor sites become more receptive. Even a short walk can reduce blood sugar levels and insulin demands dramatically.
Stress Keep stress under control! Stress has a big impact on insulin by decreasing insulin receptor sensitivity, elevating cortisol and causing the liver to raise blood sugar (the body's way of increasing energy to handle stressful situations). Raised blood sugar means more insulin. Exercise, meditation, prayer, yoga, and a favorite hobby are great stress reducers. Taking time to enjoy simple activities should always be a priority in a healthy lifestyle.
A Multi-Faceted Approach is Key For proper blood sugar and inflammation management, adequate exercise, proper nutrition, and manageable stress levels are key. Look for a health care practitioner who will dig deeply into the root causes of blood sugar imbalances and inflammation, as the underlying problems can be unique for each individual. Dr. Adam Hughes is a Chiropractor and Functional Medicine Practitioner at Kingen Chiropractic Wellness Center in Brentwood, MO. For more information, go to www.KingenChiropractic.com

You have the process down to a science and it seems to be working: you have more strength and endurance and are healthier every year. So why is that infernal stomach pooch still there? And why are you achy and slumped over like an old woman?
Our unique evaluation process is extremely detailed and allows therapists to uncover the exact soft tissue cause of each patient’s issue. The answer lies below the skin in the fascia, the fibrous connective tissue that holds our muscles, skin and organs in place. Overuse and direct trauma can cause disruption of the fibers of this vital connective tissue, resulting in the development of taut/tight bands. Left untreated, the fascia pulls into itself, locking your body into a rigid, hunched-up posture – a swayed lower back, shoulders arched forward, head jutting away from the body – that makes you ache all over and look 20 years older than you should. You think you’re doing everything right: training to finish in the top 10 in your age group in the marathon, going pro on the Pilates reformer, or mastering level 10 in silk arts. Unfortunately, you might also be damaging your fascia.
Unlike a tight muscle or tendon, though, fascial restrictions cannot be stretched or strengthened away. They can, however, be resolved by the application of very specific neuromuscular therapy techniques. These targeted and effective procedures are found in Precision Neuromuscular Therapy, or (PNMT), a massage technique that utilizes postural analysis, orthopedic testing and other processes to develop an individual treatment program that will relieve pain by loosening superficial fascia and breaking up the scar tissue. Precision Massage, LLC is composed exclusively of licensed massage therapists who are trained in PNMT. Our unique evaluation process is extremely detailed and allows therapists to uncover the exact soft tissue cause of each patient’s issue. Once identified, the problems are addressed with focused neuromuscular therapy techniques. The result is an extremely efficient and effective resolution of the fascial restrictions causing the distortions, dysfunctions and pain. Only when the restrictions are resolved can this happen. Nancy came to Precision Massage with complaints of headaches, neck and back pain. She had an extremely forward-hanging head and a hunched and very swayed back. After painstaking PNMT, Nancy was able to stretch out her soft tissue. Before long, her pain had ended and her posture had improved so much that her friends were convinced she’d either had work done or had lost weight. “I just couldn’t tell them my secret,” she laughs. “It’s between my massage therapist and me!” Beth Maddox is the owner and lead therapist of Precision Massage, LLC, located at 2224 Mason Ln, Ballwin, MO 63021. Natural Solution for Osteoporosis Have you been diagnosed with Osteopenia or Osteoporosis, or concerned with bone loss, strength and balance? Do you do everything you can to “not” take pharmaceuticals? If you have been affected by lower bone density and are searching for a nonpharmaceutical option, OsteoStrong could be your answer. OsteoStrong St. Louis, the new wellness center in Creve Coeur, offers a drug-free option for those with bone loss. Its patented system of equipment simulates high impact activity, without the risk of injury. It’s safe for all ages and conditioning levels and only requires one short session once a week. Research shows exercise does not build bone as much as once thought. Walking, running, and strength training are good for your overall health, but do very little to slow the effects of osteoporosis. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis is estimated to affect 200 million women worldwide and causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually. (That’s an osteoporotic fracture every 3 seconds!) Most have heard that the best thing to do for bone strength is weight bearing exercise, but research suggests that multiples of your body weight of force are required to trigger osteogenesis (formation of bone), which is impossible to do with conventional weight training for most people. The system at OsteoStrong was developed by Dr. John Jaquish,

PhD. Dr. Jaquish’s initial intent was to reverse his own mother’s osteoporosis. In his research he found that gymnasts frequently had high BMD (Bone Mass Density), along with “any athlete that absorbed very high impact force”. That high level of force that a gymnast’s body absorbs is able to be accomplished safely through the osteogenic loading equipment at OsteoStrong, in just one short session a week. OsteoStrong is not just for increasing bone density. The treatment also helps increase strength and balance, and is helping reduce joint pain as well. Improving strength and balance for someone with low BMD is extremely important in achieving the goal of preventing falls and ultimately preventing fractures. OsteoStrong offers 2 FREE sessions to anyone interested in learning about osteogenic loading. If you’re interested, please call and schedule your first FREE session. 314-300-6902.

The Hottest New Therapy in Town Are you ready to sweat? by Stacy Sullivan
…the newest, most effective way to let go of stress, tension and anxiety… Change is inevitable, and shedding old skin is literally the key to transformation and vibrancy. An innovative, yet simple, way to feel our best is the direction that the self-care movement is taking in the new year. Mind Body Green has declared sweating it out in an infrared sauna as the new day spa and a top trend to watch in 2017. Forbes Magazine also looks towards the future, as stress is igniting alternative therapies to manage the upcoming Age of Anxiety. Even though infrared saunas have been around for a while now, the buzz has reached an all-time high. This rapidly growing modality emphasizes preventative care, detoxification, and reducing chronic pain all while relaxing.
24 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JAN/FEB 2017
Infrared saunas are designed to promote a safe, natural and detoxifying sweat. Infrared light therapy provides many of the health benefits of natural sunlight without any of the dangerous effects of UV Rays. Just like the sun, infrared sauna waves penetrate up to 1 ½” below your skin to detoxify and revitalize your cells. The result is a deep and highly efficient sweat that eliminates toxins at the cellular level, leaving you feeling lighter, with increased health and vitality. Unlike a traditional sauna, the infrared sauna heats you gently from the inside out instead of heating the air around you. Envision yourself feeling relaxed and energized in the car on a sunny day with the warmth tingling your skin. This will give you an idea of how the radiant heat feels.
It sounds rather easy to sit in a nice, private, wood chamber to let the blood start flowing while the body relaxes. Luckily, the endorsement from high-profile doctors, celebrities, and athletes has led to a demand for infraredonly studios. Sol Sweat in Kirkwood opened in 2015 to accommodate those seeking a new way to recover from stress and tension in the St. Louis area with affordable access to infrared sauna therapy.

The Importance of Raising Your Vibration by Christopher S. Ngo, DO Many complementary and alternative medicine practices work with the body’s life force or life energy. Practitioners who work with energy may try to “raise their vibration” or that of their clients. A more descriptive term is “increasing the rate of vibration”. Increasing the rate of vibration increases the frequency of the life energy or “prana” of the body. Prana is simply the Sanskrit term for life energy just as “chi” is the Chinese term. When the rate of vibration is increased, the pranic energy moves faster and is more refined. What does it mean to have refinement of pranic energy? An analogy is sand versus pebbles. Sand particles are smaller in size then pebbles. More sand can be packed into a container or fit in smaller spaces.
With more refinement of pranic energy: ✓ Healing is more rapid and effective due to a better penetrating effect of the pranic energy. ✓ A person may feel more energetic and have more vitality since more pranic energy can fit in their energy body. ✓ Positive emotions are more refined energy and are easier to experience and attract. ✓ Negative emotions are less refined energy and have less of an effect.
26 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JAN/FEB 2017
Simple ways the energy body can be more refined: ✓ Regular meditation ✓ Healing regularly ✓ Decreasing meat intake ✓ Abstaining from smoking and addictive or hallucinogenic drugs There are many other ways to refine the energy body and there are a multitude of techniques available. The important thing is to make sure those techniques are safe and effective. Learning to scan or “feel” pranic energy with your hands is one way to validate that a technique is effective. Scanning before and after a technique to see the effect on the energy body and its energy centers (chakras) is quick and simple. Christopher S. Ngo, DO is board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and is a Certified Pranic Healing Instructor. He practices at Osteopathic Horizons, located at Stillpointe Wellness Center, 2135 Dorothy Dr, Ste. 6, Belleville, IL 62223. A Revolution in Demographics and Brain Functions of the Modern Woman By Ed Katcher, Ed.D, Ed.S, M.E., B.S.
'The human brain improves, grows and becomes more powerful through activity.' The population of the United States has doubled since 1950 and worldwide it has tripled. We are aware that socially, culturally, professionally and in the areas of health the world of the emerging woman has changed exponentially. Revolutions are not only historical; we are living in two right now. In the area of the human body the least understood organ of the human body, the brain, has, through recent research, been shown to be a much more resilient and dynamic organ. Just as the brain that is ravished with dementia can be seen to be physically damaged, so can the cognitively stimulated brain be viewed to be improved. The human brain through activity improves, grows and becomes more powerful. human potential can change and be enhanced. What we have been, or can be, is now not static but dynamic. The nature of the human being once categorized as non-

changeable in terms of potential is now open to infinite growth. This has much to say about the emerging woman. A mature lady capable of unlimited potential. The second revolution deals with the demographics of population growth that are more significant than merely the adding of more people. There exists a new population of mature adults that are not regaled to the rooms of assisted living or volunteering in the halls of menial repetitive service. No, there is a new population of women who are physically fit and cognitively astute. These ladies can grow, reinvent themselves, start new careers, invent new solutions and build a fierce new population of Wonder Women, with evolving brains, and outrageously healthy and fit bodies. As health and physical awareness grows so does the population of talented mature individuals. New venues to better serve
this growing population of potentially talented women must be enhanced. Designer Dinner Parties & Special Dietary Needs

Hosting a dinner party can be stressful even with the easiest to please guests.
Fine Arts, Antiques & Collectibles
by Martha Buckley But when your party includes guests with dietary restrictions the stress can often skyrocket. Take for example a party I hosted over Christmas. The co-host asked for a beef main dish. The guests’ dietary restrictions included 1 vegetarian, 1 glutenfree, 1 no red meat, 1 no mushrooms and 3 “we don’t eat vegetables.” Needless to say, short of becoming a short-order cook, it was challenging menu to organize and execute. When planning an event, I always suggest my clients provide a vegetarian/vegan entrée that can be a side for the rest of the group. Some menu items have been over-done (e.g. flatbreads/ pizzas and salads) but there are many interesting options available. Vegetarians appreciate a well-executed vegetable medley sautéed in a good olive oil with a splash of top-shelf balsamic. Flavored olive oils and balsamics are a great way to vary and brighten up your dish. If you need a place to start, the December 2016 issue of Sauce Magazine has a great Vegetable Marsala recipe. It’s easy to prepare the vegetable marsala along with a chicken or veal marsala to give similar entrée options to carnivores and vegetarians. The similarity brings a cohesion to the meal that two distinct entrées may not.

Let us hand le the food.
Gluten-free guests and lactose intolerant guests provide a whole different set of issues. Gluten-free dishes must be prepared on a clean surface that is free of any flour or other gluten substance. Lactose free dishes need the same consideration. Some guests have allergies so severe that even the smallest amount of gluten or lactose will set off an allergic reaction. Of course there are many other food allergens (nuts) and dietary considerations (diabetics), but with a little planning your guests can enjoy a meal perfectly suited to their needs. A local natural food company is set out to change the industry. By Camilla Andersson
When you sip your favorite coldpressed juice, do you ever stop to think about what happened to the produce that did not make it into the juice? Angela Zeng did. After learning that some companies throw more than half of the plants into the trash, she decided to start her own juice company Karuna together with her husband Dr. Shawn Hu. Zeng says it is also absurd to make milk from products like almonds. Instead, Karuna uses fruits and vegetables that are naturally juicy, which preserves most of the plant and its nutrients. The use of nutrition-packed plants also means there is no need to add vitamin and protein powders made in the lab. The aronia berries in Karuna's Heal drink, for example, are one of nature's most concentrated sources of antioxidants, and the mung bean sprouts contribute to the drink
having twice as much protein as almond milk. Karuna also is challenging another industry trend: juices almost as sweet as sodas. Karuna's products are naturally low in sugar, because if you

The power of
Breath
by Susan Karleskint
The benefits of breathing correctly are immense. People who practice proper breathing technique report decreased anxiety and depression; a reduction in impulsiveness and cravings; better ability to regulate emotions and a surge of happiness and optimism. They’re in less pain and they sleep better, too. Getting our breathing back on track will improve life in so many ways. As we get more oxygen in the body we get healthier, have more energy, and can begin to lead a more positive, painfree life. About Susan Karleskint
Everybody breathes, so breathing should be easy, right? It is, after all, one of the first things we learn how to do when we are born, and without breathing, we would not exist. How well we breathe, however, is a different story. Most of us over-breathe using our mouths or our upper chest. These incorrect breathing patterns are caused by a number of factors, including trauma, lung capacity, anxiety and never learning how to take in a restorative breath and release it for maximum benefit. Instead, we should be doing all
36 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JAN/FEB 2017
of our breathing through the nose. The nasal passage is designed to breathe; it filters the air, warms the air and allows these small canals to get oxygen to our lungs. Due to the small openings of the nose, the lungs then are able to pull out the oxygen and send it to the rest of the body. Breathing through the mouth not only bypasses so many important steps, but also re-trains the body to mouth breath when we sleep, which can lead to, among other things, snoring and sore throats.
Susan is passionate about breathing properly. Every session will always begin with silent breathing; the tongue lies to the roof of the mouth, face is relaxed, lips are closed, the inhale comes through the nose and the exhale is longer than the inhale. This takes practice and requires being mindful of your breath and body. But once you learn the technique, you can use it anytime and anywhere to reduce sudden stress and transform negative thoughts into positive emotions. To experience a class with Susan, sign up at www.getfitstlouisllc.com. Your first class is FREE with Susan. She also offers new client specials - 10 classes for $30 or 20 classes for $60.
Are you feeling a little PUFFY these days? by Monica Koch
That little bloat you’re noticing in your waistline, face, neck, fingers and ankles means that your body is retaining water. Luckily, it’s easy to get rid of—all it takes is a few easy lifestyle swaps. In just a day or two, you’ll start looking and feeling your best! The first is to drink more water. It’s not as crazy as it sounds. That’s because the most common cause of bloating is an imbalance in the salt, sugar and other electrolytes within your body. Adding more water will actually flush out the chemicals that are causing you to retain fluid. As your body adjusts, it will release the excess water. If you don’t like plain water, add lemon, grapefruit or cucumber slices. Plain coconut or aloe water is another great choice. Another tip is to take a break from dairy. As we age, unfortunately, so do our digestive systems. Nobody likes to talk about it, not even our doctors. But, I’m here to tell you that adults—particularly women—become less able to digest dairy as they age. If you find that you experience uncomfortable bloating in your abdomen after eating dairy, consider removing yogurt, cheese and milk from your diet and replacing them with a non-dairy alternative like almond, coconut or cashew milk, yogurt and cheese. If your symptoms ease, it may mean that you have difficulty digesting dairy. But that might not mean you have to give up your favorite cheese or ice cream. Some people are fine with certain dairy-based products, but have trouble with others. To determine your precise sensitivity, add milk-based foods back one at a time and pay attention to how you react. Starches, especially the processed ones like sugary cereals; white pasta, bread and crackers; candy and cookies all encourage your body to hold on to water. Replacing these foods with fiber-dense options like zucchini pasta, roasted root veggies, slow cooked oatmeal, brown rice or quinoa can help maintain balance. Go for apples, berries or your favorite fruit to curb the sweet tooth. Don’t forget to exercise! Throwing an extra sweaty workout class into your routine will have your skinny jeans fitting great in no time at all! Monica Koch (owner of klean&lean) has been in the fitness industry for 30 years and has developed her own innovativetechnique that takes you out of your comfort zone. She is a certified personal trainer, instructor for group fitness classes, a food and fitness motivator and the Health & Fitness Editor for Yoga & Spa Magazine.

I’m always amazed by the variety of reactions I hear to this simple sentence. Some people use it as an opportunity to discount the power of a resolution. Others want to share their plans for the new year. But one of the most common responses I have witnessed in my seventeen years of yoga is, “I’m so annoyed by all of the temporary gym people in January. I can’t get on my machine and they aren’t even here for the long haul. It’s so annoying!” This year, I urge you to consider this in another fashion. Before you send an exasperated look toward the person struggling to figure out the treadmill, take a moment to reflect on a time in your life when you were trying something brand new—a time when you were totally out of the box. Did you continue and find a new passion? If so, what were the hardest moments on your journey? Did anyone motivate you to continue? If not, can you think about the most discouraging factor? What drove you away? We all have a choice this January – we can openly welcome those who are taking the first and hardest step to changing their lives, or we can roll our eyes and wait for the “New Year’s
38 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | JAN/FEB 2017
Resolution Folks” to fail and fall away. Either way, we’ll be changing someone’s life. But choose the former, and we may be helping that person towards positive change. I, personally, love January 1. Although I use the first of each month throughout the year to set goals and plan how to advance my life in the coming 30-or-so days, January is something different. We have our greatest dreams in January. We will succeed in some and let others fall to the wayside. Regardless, we need each other along the way to celebrate or lean on! Try something new and uncomfortable– like going to the gym for the first time in many years – is SCARY! You could be the one person to influence another’s success or failure. Remember, we are all connected! Jessica Rask has approximately 25,000 hours of yoga amassed over the past two decades. At EveryBody Yoga, and her tandem business, The St. Louis Juice Press, she strives to help EVERYBODY in St. Louis realize his or her own health goals.
Happy stretching!
For many years the idea of exercise has been shaped around the notion that if we just “get moving” we can burn calories, improve cardiovascular health and tone muscles. Even though people exercise more now than ever before, and our nation has an obsession with dieting and eating less, optimum health and fitness have eluded the majority of Americans. Since the inception of The Exercise Coach over 16 years ago, we have created an evolutionary approach to exercise that aides in the improvement of overall health and fitness by focusing on Muscle Quality. If we take the approach that maybe “calories in / calories out” isn’t the solution and focus on how muscle quality can improve our quality of life, we open ourselves up to a more effective and efficient approach to exercise and fitness. Muscles have been called the windows to every system of the body. If we start with this premise we can see how transformative whole-effort exercise can be by requiring the body to make positive adaptations. As we improve muscle quality we also positively affect neurological activity and the ability to recruit more muscle fibers, which leads to muscular growth and the ability to improve glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Other benefits include improved cardiovascular function, stronger tendons and bones, better food digestion, endocrine system enhancement, and a slowing down of the aging process.

In 2011 Jennifer opened Barefoot Yoga in St. Peters, where she taught yoga and belly dance classes and hosted monthly Red Tent gatherings. Through these activities, Jennifer quickly realized that women were finding their strength, power and confidence through movement, dance and community. Her start-up became more than just another little yoga-studio-that-could in suburbia. It blossomed into a sanctuary where women could sweat out their prayers through dance, and where feminine movement became a medicine so powerful, it could actually heal their souls.
Jennifer said her main goal for Sacred Movement is to encourage women to live in the space of sacred femininity and not become consumed by what she considers to be toxic messages that can promote body shame.
To honor the space and its power, Jennifer changed the name of the studio to Sacred Movement, and moved it to the Three Flags Business Center in St. Charles, which is located near I-70. Today, Sacred Movement specializes in a wide variety of feminine movement classes that are suitable for all ages, abilities and body types.
Sacred Movement provides many different styles of movement classes for women, including Vinyasa and Yin yoga, Qoya, Nia and American Tribal Style® Belly Dance. Most recently, Kasper was certified by Sheila Kelly’s S Factor® in Los Angeles to teach their Fluid Feminine Movement® class. All of the classes taught at Sacred Movement highlight three distinct feminine characteristics – flow, connection with one’s breath, and rounder, more circular body movements.
“In today’s society, there is a very unhealthy obsession with women’s bodies,” says Jennifer. “Digital enhancement in every form of media creates artificial standards that are unachievable. This constant focus on how we look causes us to disconnect from our bodies. It’s the main reason why women have lost their sparkle.”
“Because of this disconnection, women feel removed from their bodies and live more in their mind and emotions,” she says. “The best way to heal this is to physically reconnect with our bodies. When we invite our minds to listen to our bodies, it strengthens our intuition. This is what will make us stronger and more confident, and rekindle our sparkle.”
“All of our classes focus on moving the parts of a woman’s body in the way they were designed for her to move,” says Jennifer. “It’s all about how it feels, not how it looks. So if it feels good, then you are doing it right!”
The classes taught at Sacred Movement are designed to be an alternative to traditional fitness classes that use more masculine, linear movements. Jennifer and her staff teach women the language of the feminine body in a way that builds muscle and strength while also acknowledging their natural curves. Another unique feature of Sacred Movement is the studio setting. To help clients focus on what they are feeling and not what they are seeing, many classes are held in rooms where the mirrors have been covered and the lighting dimmed. “The classes taught at Sacred Movement will allow you shift your perspective,” explains Jennifer. “It’s a real workout, but you’ll also feel like you’ve spent a day at the spa. We want you to leave relaxed, rejuvenated and energized, but also feeling open-heartedly feminine, clear-minded and very centered.” For more information about Sacred Movement’s class offerings or current schedule, visit their website at www.sacredmovementstudio.com or call (314) 398-8184. This is NOT your mama’s cardio kickboxing class! by April Porter
At 9Round 30 Minute Kickboxing, you will not find a room full of heavy bags with one instructor at the front, yelling commands while working out himself, and offering little to no personal attention to the dozens of people in the room. You will not be stuck in the gym for an hour. You will not have to schedule your day around a class time, just to fit fitness into your life. You will not get bored. 9Round is closer to the sitcom 'Cheers'– where everyone knows your name. Here’s what to expect: as you walk in the door, a trainer greets you with enthusiasm and sets you up on your first of 9 stations, or 9 Rounds. Each round lasts 3 minutes and changes every day. As you work
through 30 minutes of cardio, weight and resistance training, boxing and kickboxing, the trainer provides personal instruction, guidance and motivation. You learn skills and advance strength as the trainer tailors the day’s exercises to meet your personal fitness level, which is based not on a corporate formula, but by monitoring your actual heart rate during your workout. Throughout the process, you are sweating, learning and, probably, smiling as well. 9Round is on a mission to get people fit 9 rounds at a time. And since the fitness puzzle includes nutrition as well as exercise, each 9Rounds membership also includes a nutrition program.
Ultimately, at 9Round, it's all about relationships. Throughout the year, the club works with local charities to advance the surrounding communities, and attends social events together to keep members engaged and committed to personal success. The truth is, 9Round is not a gym. It’s an inclusive club of comrades… friends… family. Endnote: 9Round has 8 area locations, owned by three women, April Porter, Marlene Twehaus and Becky Venuti. MEN MAT on the
by Natalie Piontek
Contrary to popular belief, yoga isn’t only for women. In fact many of the founders of yoga are men – Pattabhi Jois (inventor of Ashtanga), Sri Dharma Mittra (inventor of Dharma), and B.K.S Iyengar (inventor of Iyengar yoga) are a few names that come to mind. The strength training one receives from yoga and the challenges for flexibility that yoga poses make it an ideal physical activity for men. Our men on the mat enjoy disciplines of physical fitness that can also be hard on the body, such as running and rock climbing. Yoga provides them an excellent source of cross training, allowing them to improve flexibility and heal from injury.
Stephan Keya Anantya
(middle right)
A licensed yoga instructor and lifelong gymnast, Stephan Keya Anantya has been drawn to movement his entire life. In 2014 he received his yoga teacher training from St. Louis’s WestEast Yoga. Stephan enjoys all forms of yoga, but he particularly enjoys Yin yoga – a slower-paced, more restorative style. He teaches one yoga class a week at Integrity, the web agency where he works as a developer. For Stephan, yoga’s benefits reach beyond the physical to the mental and spiritual. “What’s so powerful about yoga is that it has something for everyone,” he said. “It’s hard to sum up yoga. It’s a whole universe."
Davin Rubicz (bottom right) Davin has dealt with considerable back pain due to his career as a cellist and teacher. His college cello instructor had studied the Alexander Technique (an educational process that teaches correct posture and body alignment) and encouraged him to try yoga. Davin experimented with a few types of yoga before finding hot yoga, the practice with which he connected instantly.
He practices at Pure Hot Yoga St. Louis. March 2017 will mark his nine-year yoga anniversary. The incredible benefits of yoga have also led Davin to begin taking his practice off the mat and making other lifestyle changes. He now also meditates and eats a plant-based diet. In addition to practicing yoga, Davin loves snowboarding, long-distance trail running, and electric skateboarding.
Ken Madison
(top right)
A senior network engineer, Ken realized that his fast-paced job was causing him to carry a great deal of tension in his body. His wife, who has practiced yoga for many years, led him to believe that he too might reap benefits from yoga. In April 2016 he enrolled in a two-week trial package at Jane’s House of Well-Being. Now, less than a year later, he’s taking the 200hour Yoga Teacher Training program to become an instructor. Yoga has helped him to effectively manage and lessen his stress. In addition to practicing yoga, Ken strength trains three times a week. His other hobbies include astronomy, photography, and playing guitar.

The end of the year may signal transformation, but after the stress of the holiday season, it’s all too easy to snuggle into the quiet moments that tend to occur during the colder months. Before you know it, that need for a change of pace has turned into a lack of direction. You feel lost and in need of a new rhythm that will connect you to the things you’ve put on hold—like exercise. When that small voice whispering about the need to refocus becomes a shout, a bit of structure might be just the thing to get you up and moving.

Are You an Alpha Wife?
by Suzanne Venker
You’ll know the alpha female when you see her. She’s the outspoken and
that she's competing with, rather than loving, her man.
I’m guessing this is how your relationship began. Your husband did the chasing, and
somewhat intimidating woman who knows what she wants and where she’s
Every relationship needs a masculine
you were caught. Then you got married, and something happened.
going. She’s purposeful, confident, driven.
All good things, right? Yes, as long as she channels it in the right direction. Or remains single. When the alpha female gets married, she becomes the only thing she knows how to be: an alpha wife! An alpha wife is in charge of everything and everyone. She is, in a word, the Boss. You can find her at the office, or you can find her at home with the kids. How the alpha wife spends her days doesn’t matter. What matters is
and a feminine energy to thrive. ‘Alpha and beta’ is one set of terms used to describe this energy—another is the Chinese expression ‘yin and yang.’ Yin refers to the feminine, and yang refers to the masculine. Think of a battery: one part is positive, and the other is negative. In order for the battery to work, both energies must be present. Masculine energy is gruff and hard, and it wants to be in charge. Feminine energy nurtures and verbalizes, and it wants to be loved. That’s why feminine energy is the receiver of masculine energy. The male acts, and the female responds.
You stopped being the receiver and started being the aggressor. You took control. But don’t men like strong women? Yes, many do. But they don’t want a strongwilled woman who argues all the time or who can’t take no for answer. They want a wife who’s soft, gentle and just plain nice.
They want the feminine.
Suzanne Venker America’s #1 Culture Warrior Does your marriage sometimes feel like a giant power struggle? In The Alpha Female’s Guide to Men & Marriage, bestselling author Suzanne Venker helps women own their femininity, or find their inner beta, in order to find peace and passion with a man.

Trying to get healthy in 2017? You might want to look at your stress level. Dr. Seth Gerlach
Dissolve 1 or 2 cups of Epsom salts into a warm bath. Add your favorite essential oil for added effect.
For many people, stress is the trigger for what often becomes a cascade of health problems.
Altered Sleep
The biggest issue is that most people don’t realize just how stressed they are until symptoms begin to appear.
Luckily, there are ways to de-stress, restore balance to hormones, lose weight and regulate the immune system. Here are a few to try at home:
Besides being a great stress reliever, being outdoors can improve mental clarity and raise Vitamin D levels. Plus, outdoor air is much less toxic than indoor air!
Deep Breathing
There are few things we control, but we can control how we deal with stress. Although addressing all three components of stress (chemical, physical, and emotional) is paramount, reducing emotional stress can start you on a path to a healthier you!
It is important to note that there are many different kinds of stress, including chemical (food, toxins), physical (pain, infection) and emotional (deadlines, work, school). These all can have their own unique impacts on the body, but today I’ll address emotional stress.
Rising levels of the stress hormone cortisol can dampen the beneficial effect of other hormones like melatonin, which helps you fall asleep and stay asleep.
Chronic emotional stress can lead to serious health problems including:
One of the simplest things that we do on a daily basis – breathing – can literally change our physiology. Most of us breathe with our chest, but using your diaphragm to breathe initiates the relaxation response and triggers your parasympathetic nervous system to rebuild and repair tissues, kick start your immune system and ease your mind.
Weight gain
Meditation
Stress reduces your ability to burn fat, makes your cells less sensitive to insulin, causes hunger and sugar cravings and increases the rate at which you store fat. This can be a vicious cycle.
Depleted immune system There are over 300 studies showing the stress and immune dysfunction connection; in one, people under stress were found to be twice as likely to get sick.
Certain kinds of meditation can be extremely beneficial. In particular, Transcendental Meditation has been shown to increase telomere length (aging gracefully), radically decrease medical expenses and decrease blood pressure.
Exercise, especially outdoors

Drink Juice. Feel Amazing.
Ode To Joy! by Becky Brittain, Ph.D, R-DMT
Is now the time for you to open up to the energetics of joy? Joy fuels enthusiasm and strengthens the life force. It creates passion, new creative ideas and purpose. Invite joyful and harmonic frequencies into your consciousness. Then it is only a matter of time until it manifests physically. The body responds positively to good vibes and pleasurable experiences. Feel joy in your bones to both uplift and heal the body. Embody joy. To locate and express this joyful bandwidth, first find it inside yourself. Wayne Dyer stated that “everything comes from that invisible place within that wants to expand”. Share your happiness with others. Joy is contagious. Smile often. Lift your gaze and make meaningful eye contact. Find someone else’s tickle bone.

Remember that even in our lowest moments, when we question life or feel alone, things can be different. It is important to switch the channel to discover higher vibrational levels. Sometimes this requires letting go of limiting beliefs and moving your habitual emotional set points. Choose to consciously elevate your mood, particularly during stressful times. All the benefits of health and well-being make joyful expression a worthwhile practice. Each shift builds on the next to create deeper sustained joy. Scientific research indicates that laughter is the best medicine for recovery from illness. The Institute of Heart Math reveals that dropping into your heart to experience self-compassion and gratitude creates coherence in the body. Music therapy reveals that music soothes the soul and lifts spirits. Exposure to light, sound, movement and colors offers the ingredients of joy.
Here are practical ways to increase the joy in your life: 1. Give yourself sunlight infusions. Light is therapy. 2. Plug your body into inexhaustible energies from Source. Open your arms and let the current flow. 3. Create a happy tunes playlist and sing to it often. 4. Enjoy being in your body. Move, wiggle, or dance to feel free. 5. Remember what makes you happy, and do it (e.g., exercise, time in nature, time alone, outings with special friends, or playing with pets). 6. Rediscover the beauty of colors and wear shades that lift your mood. 7. Use aromatherapy to create pleasant smells in your home. 8. Watch for the exhilaration of unsuspected rainbows and sunsets etc.
Joy is waiting for you. Express happiness and hilarity every chance that you get. Be the Force of Joy! Say Goodbye To That Dreaded Double Chin In the age of the “selfie” it’s a bit easier to capture the perfect angle and hide any unflattering views, especially when it comes to hiding a double chin. For many, that little pocket of fat can negatively affect self-confidence. Getting rid of a dreaded double chin just got easier - without undergoing surgery – with KYBELLA®. It’s a newly approved injectable to treat moderate-to-severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also known as “double chin.” Submental fat makes a person look heavier or older than they really are, so getting rid of it provides a very real and visible benefit. The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring molecule (deoxycholic acid) that aids in

the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Injecting KYBELLA® into fat below the chin destroys fat cells, which creates a noticeable reduction in fullness. When these fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer accumulate or store fat, so the body absorbs them.
and Juvederm® -can produce dramatic results without surgery. The fillers are injected into facial areas to smooth out wrinkles or add volume. Patients often begin these treatments when they are in their 30's or 40's, when less product can be used to achieve satisfactory results.
Only a KYBELLA®-trained healthcare specialist can administer this treatment, which involves multiple small injections beneath the chin. The injection process takes 15 to 20 minutes, and the number of injections is determined by the amount of fat and the patient’s desired profile. Most patients require 2 to 4 treatments for optimal results.

Lessons in Wealth by C. Michael Unterreiner, ChFC
The popular book “The Millionaire Next Door” revealed many of the characteristics shared by wealthy Americans. According to the authors, the typical millionaire doesn’t drive an expensive car or even appear wealthy. Instead, he or she might blend into a typical middleclass neighborhood. In my 25 years helping people invest, I’ve discovered that those who have achieved financial independence have a number of traits and habits in common. Give them a try! You might find yourself a step closer to being out of debt and on your way to financial security.
They Pay Themselves First Successful people save through salary deductions or automatic drafts from their checking account. Building wealth becomes the first “bill” they pay, rather than something they do with extra money.
They Make Good “Little” Decisions Small choices have a big impact when repeated. Quitting smoking, getting coffee at home instead of at an expensive coffee bar, packing a lunch and minimizing alcohol use aren’t just healthy choices—they can save you money. As little as $5 spent each day on those luxuries totals close to $2,000 in a year. An additional $2,000 invested each year certainly helps reach financial goals.
They Don’t Compare Themselves to Others
Planning, protecting, preparing your family's future & your legacy. C. Michael Unterreiner, ChFC 16020 Swingley Ridge Road Suite 100 Chesterfield, MO 63017 www.financiallegacy.com 636.777.7099
An “attitude of gratitude” is rewarding in itself. Financially successful people don’t buy possessions just to keep up with (or be ahead of) someone else.
They Live Below Their Means People on the path towards financial independence know it’s vital to avoid “lifestyle creep.” Each year, with a raise or a larger bonus, people spend more, and then grow accustomed to that higher lifestyle. The standard of living becomes more difficult to replace, since the amount needed to reach financial independence depends on expenses. The higher your lifestyle, the more you need to save, but the less you are actually able to. The only way out of this vicious cycle is to consistently spend less than you earn.
The Bottom Line Wealth isn’t created by those who act like they make a lot of money; it is created by everyday decisions to spend less than you make and wisely invest the difference.

Escape to Mexico By Mary Lou Fitzsimmons How would you like to go to a wellness weekend at a Five Diamond resort in Puerto Vallarta gratis? Oh yes, I would! This question was posed to me by Stacy Hunsicker, the Publisher of Yoga and Spa Magazine. It's always a good idea to keep an open mind when you're around Stacy; FUN things happen!

The destination spa was at the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit in Puerto Vallarta. It is a five diamond spa with all the amenities located on the Pacific ocean. We arrived at the enormous and gorgeous entry foyer which showcased the outdoor theme of Mexico's way of life. As I was absorbing all this beauty, a staff member arrived carrying fresh-squeezed juice. While I was sitting in the lobby awaiting my room arrangements, a spa attendant began massaging my neck and shoulders. This was in the first ten minutes! I was escorted to my wellness suite, which included a king sized bed, coffee bar, spa shower with a vitamin C lotion dispenser, and a balcony overlooking the ocean. On the second level a covered balcony offered a huge Jacuzzi and massage table. The wellness suites have their own concierge who attends to all requests, from 24-hour room service to custom made soaps and lotions. On day 2, a personal trainer arrived in my room for a one-hour session, which included a spinning bike and free weights. Just walking through the beautiful hotel property with the ocean breeze, plants and flowers made me feel like I was losing weight – which I did over four days of pamper, pamper, and a little more pamper. After my training session, I went to a gentle yoga pilates class on the beach. We meditated, breathed and stretched into a state of peaceful energy. Following class several of us walked to the beachside open restaurant for a healthy and plentiful breakfast. Decisions, decisions, decisions! Should I swim in one of the three infinity pools? Should I take a nap? Should I get a deep tissue massage? This wellness treatment was the best brain turn off I've had in years! Dinner anyone? Have I mentioned the three gourmet restaurants? Each night I had a choice of a different cuisine. First night we dined in the French restaurant, and the following evenings Italian and Mexican. They were sophisticated and mucho delicioso! The resort was introducing new vegan and vegetarian options designed for the different cuisines. The entrees and service were superb in all respects. One evening a famous vegan chef, who writes for The Huffington Post, led us in a cooking class. We created many mouth watering dishes with her guidance. She gave me a new way of thinking about sustainable living. What is good for the planet is good for people, animals and plants!

RESTAURANT RAVE
Canyon Cafe gets a Face Lift
By Natalie Piontek
Canyon Cafe offers customers a distinct taste of the Southwest that isn’t found anywhere else in St. Louis. In a renovation that took place last Fourth of July, the restaurant now boasts an atmosphere that’s as modern and welcoming as its food is scrumptious and unique. Previously painted a deep, moody burgundy, the walls are now a luminous white – a change which gives the restaurant a more open feel. Likewise the floors, formerly a dark maroon, have had their sealant removed to reveal a finished concrete underneath. A new collection of charming antiques has been brought in to replace the collection that had occupied the restaurant for the last ten years. As before, traditional Southwestern motifs are sprinkled throughout the café. The Kokopelli, a mythical creature who saves hunger with the seeds he blows out of his flute, adorns the frames of the
standing menus – instead of carrying a flute, he holds a plate of piping hot food. The bar underwent the most impressive transformation of all. Glittering, multicolored mosaic tiles serve as the backdrop for Canyon Cafe’s renowned collection of liquors. The minimal, contemporary lighting hanging above the countertop creates an inviting glow even during the daytime. General Manager Troy Wieman also hopes to soon bring in more local liquors to augment the current selection. Meanwhile, the offerings from the cuisine remain as up-to-date and delicious as ever. Executive Chef Francisco Bravo prepares a number of dishes from his hometown in Mexico that are consistently huge hits with restaurant-goers. The street tacos, which come in crispy chicken, chili relleno, blackened fish, bison picadillo, crispy shrimp, and vegetable, can be
mixed and matched for a customized experience. The chimichanga, a flour tortilla that is stuffed with grilled chicken, bell pepper, sweet corn, and Jack cheese, and then fried, is another of the restaurant’s most popular items. Plus, the famous Limit-2 margarita, often called “the best margarita in town”, is made with only top-of-the-line ingredients (and thus why you’re limited to having two!). Despite the many alterations that have been made to the appearance of the restaurant, the architecture and brand integrity of the restaurant remain unchanged. “We tried to make sure that stayed the same because how the restaurant is built is a huge part of who we are here,” Wieman said. “We’re the same old place, just with a face lift.” Visit the website: www.canyoncafe.com Call: (314)-872-3443

What does it mean to be healthy and full of vitality? by TJ Williams, DC, PhD
We eat what we believe to be healthy food. We work out almost every single day. We take our vitamins. It may appear that we are healthy on the outside. But what is happening on the inside? Is your doctor going the extra mile for you and testing all of you? How is the health of our cells? Are we dehydrated? In fact almost all of us are chronically dehydrated. And when was the last time your doctor tested you to see if you are dehydrated? It is a simple test after all. We all make sure to get our cholesterol checked. But half of the people who will have their first heart attack this year will have normal cholesterol levels. So why did they have that heart attack? Did their doctor explain to them that most of the cholesterol in their body was made by their liver and did not come from the food they eat? Did their doctor tell them that even the American Heart Association states: “…cholesterol itself isn’t bad.” Did their doctor explain to them that cholesterol particle size is more important than their total cholesterol? Did their doctor test them for things like myeloperoxidase? Go ahead and Google that term. I will give you a simple rundown. Myeloperoxidase

(MPO) is an enzyme that, when elevated, causes oxidative damage and significantly increases the risk of vulnerable plaque rupture. In English this means that if MPO is elevated you are at a SIGNIFICANTLY increased risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Another aspect of health is our gut. How healthy is your gut? Do we have the right number of good and bad bacteria? Is our gut inflamed? Are we correctly digesting the food we are eating? When was the last test you had that measured the bacteria in your gut to make sure things were in balance? Gut bacteria and gut inflammation are critical to someone’s overall health and wellness. And lastly, what about the foods that you are eating? Did you know that foods we eat can be a primary source of inflammation in our bodies and can be one of the biggest insults to our immune system? Did you know that just because a food is considered a “health” food doesn't necessarily mean that that food is healthy for you? It is possible for you to be sensitive to a “health” food. It is possible that a “health” food is not healthy for you. When was the last time you had your food tested to make sure it was the best thing you could be eating? This article is here to challenge you. Many of us appear healthy on the
outside but we are complete train wrecks on the inside. Simple testing is out there that can provide you with the information discussed in this article. The only thing you need to do is find the right doctor who can test and interpret this information for you.
