We can look and feel better at any age. There has been a massive shift in the perception of age as we look around and see 60-year-old women that have the energy and bodies of 40-year-olds. I have 65- and 75-year-oldplus women in my life that I can hardly keep up with. They have shown me

Feeling old comes from the belief that we are old which is derived from

a thought. We can think ourselves into old age or we can think ourselves into eternal youth. These thoughts transform into a reality. When we see women getting more beautiful with age, it is because they believe they are healthy and fit, and thus they feel young. Women who practice yoga and pamper themselves at the spa exude the secret of eternal youth. Even if you are 50, you can feel 30 and look close to it. Yes, I am asking you to think you are young even if society labels your chronological age as “old. The secret is to believe. If our outer lives do not resemble our inner desires, we can stop and make adjustments. Outer drama is always a result of inner turmoil. Physical ailments and disharmony in relationships are signals that our inner lives need attention. Feeling old is a red flag that we need more love and fulfillment. Eternal youth is not a destination; it is a reality we can create within the present.

Anti-Aging Issue What does anti-aging mean? The definition of anti-aging is to delay or halt the aging process. When we are young, our bodies’cells can easily generate new ones. As we age of course, our bodies’ability to create these new cells diminishes greatly. It becomes more and more difficult to maintain healthy cells. Our bodies are made up of trillions of cells. So, what are we to do? How do we keep these cells happy, healthy, strong, and resilient? Take a mind and body approach to your health; become the CEO of your wellbeing. Check in with yourself every day to see if certain foods provide you with nice, sustainable energy, or if they take it away. Your body is constantly striving for homeostasis. It is always working for you, and what a blessing this is! Support your body’s innate ability to heal by providing it with good nutrition, sleep, and exercise. Your relationships, your environment, and what products you use on your skin and hair are important, too. I invite you to explore all these areas in your life and look for ways to support yourself so that you can age gracefully, beautifully, and healthily. In this issue, we have put together a wonderful anti-aging guide for your health, beauty, and fitness needs. May you find the resources, products, and services that best resonate with you!

Cosmetic Dermatology
with Joseph A. Muccini, MD - Board Certified Dermatologist
Spring renewal is not just for Mother Nature! DEFINE AND REFINE FACIAL WRINKLES AND UNEVEN COLORATION
with a combination of Botox, fillers, applied energy (IPL/ laser) and/or microneedling treatments, all of which are very affordable when compared to more invasive procedures. Botox blocks the nerve signals controlling the muscles that cause facial wrinkling, such as those in the brow. Fillers compensate by restoring volume at various depths under the skin, resulting in a smoother skin surface. Radio frequency (RF) and microneedling help reduce wrinkles by helping the body generate collagen. Laser treatments also help stimulate collagen generation and rejuvenate damaged cells, and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments help mitigate uneven skin coloration. Many different choices are available and various treatment combinations can be designed to accommodate both financial budgets and lifestyle demands (like how much downtime, if any, one can endure). A small investment can go a long way. Spring is an ideal time to consider your rejuvenation options!

NECK FAT UNDER THE CHIN CAN BE REMOVED
and skin under the chin can be sculpted, tightened, and restored using Precision Tx, a single-treatment minimally invasive laser. In contrast to injectable neck fat reduction techniques, which require multiple treatments and do not address skin laxity (fat is gone but skin may still sag), Precision Tx both removes fat and tightens the skin. This occurs because the splitbeam Precision Tx laser is placed beneath the skin, where it both liquefies fat and stimulates collagen growth by thermally stimulating deep dermal tissue, all in a single treatment. Reducing neck fat and stimulating neck skin tightening with Precision Tx can help produce a profoundly younger look to a patient’s face and profile, with minimal recovery time. Call today to schedule an evaluation and consultation to see if you may be a candidate for one or more of the spring rejuvenation treatments described above. 314.878.0600 | 222 South Woods Mill Road Suite 475N | Chesterfield 63017 www.MidAmericaSkin.com On the campus of St. Luke’s Hospital.

Stimulate Hair Growth
Geneveve by Viveve is a safe, non-surgical approach for revitalizing vaginal tissue. Just like skin, vaginal tissue can become loose or ‘lax’ over time from childbirth, hormone deficiency or pelvic surgeries. Vaginal laxity leads to issues with sexual sensation, lubrication and urinary incontinence, which can impact a woman’s sexual enjoyment, self-confidence and overall well-being. The Centre For Vibrant Health and Wellness is the first in the St. Louis area to offer this one-time, in-office, 30 minute Geneveve™ treatment.

They say it all starts, (and ends), in the colon. Our colons house 70% of our immunity. Residual toxins from prescription drugs leftover in our bodies and exposure to environmental pollutants, sets the stage for accelerated aging. This also, results in blemished skin, low energy, and weight gain. Colon hydrotherapy can provide a gentle, non-invasive means to wash away acidic buildup in the colon while introducing oxygen into the colon, re-establishing the body's natural ph. Once the body returns to an alkaline ph, healing begins, bringing back vitality and that natural glow. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Balance & Posture
There are very few things more powerful than oxygen. When it comes to health and anti-aging, one treatment rises above the rest.
Many of our 50+ clients receive regular massage with the expressed goal of warding off the effects of aging, such as poor balance/posture, pain and stiffness. When compared with their peers who did not receive regular skilled massage as they aged, massage seniors have remarkably less of these aging tell-tale signs.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation, detoxifying cells, increasing stem cells, strengthening the immune system, and improving sleep. All of these combined into one treatment provides an excellent way to slow the aging process, rejuvenate the body and mind, and improve overall health

Whatever we focus on expands. When I think about anti-aging, what I really want is vibrant health. Vibrant health is an inside job. It starts with how you think, what you eat and how you tend to and nourish your body, mind and spirit. We have been given this amazing body, our physical structure on earth. We know that when the body is operating at peak performance we feel amazing. We also know what it feels like to be sluggish or limited in our abilities due to our current state of health. So vibrant health must include nurturing the body with wholesome, nutritious food, water, rest, sleep and movement. Our bodies function best at a normal weight, balanced and free of toxins All doctors will agree that the human body is a miraculous selfhealing organism. Yes, the body can and does repair itself. Our mind is probably the least understood and utilized aspect of vibrant health. Talk
to an athlete and they will tell you the value of utilizing your mind not only in competition but in everyday life. Successful people possess confidence, self-discipline and emotional intelligence to design a life they’re proud of, and it’s because they have taken the time to learn how their mind operates and how to best use it to their advantage. This is not new information; we all know of the placebo effect or case after case of spontaneous remissions and medical miracles. Mind over matter and mind over medicine is are the powers we have to utilize the mind in ways that serve our best interest. Science is really beginning to excel in this area. We must not forget that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. How do we tune into and nurture this side of ourselves? We can spend time in nature, and practice mindfulness, meditation, and yoga just to name a few. Maybe you have heard mindfulness as “being in the

How Your Digestion Affects Chronic Health Conditions By Dr. Adam Hughes
Supporting chronic health conditions is complex; there are many pieces to the puzzle. If the body and its parts don’t work in unison, an array of health problems can occur. These problems have a drastic effect on the individual’s health especially if suffering from a chronic health condition. The traditional medical model treats chronic conditions on a sign and symptom basis, which often leads to an improper diagnosis of the problems source. Alternative medicinal practices aim to treat the body as a whole, and find the source in order to correct it. With many chronic conditions, the stomach can be the source of the problem, which is why evaluation is necessary, regardless of where physical symptoms are felt. The stomach has important responsibilities in maintaining overall body health. 90% of people, who have GI dysfunction, have it because their stomach is not functioning properly.
26 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | MAY/JUNE 2017
Among the stomach’s responsibilities, regulating the flow of hydrochloric acid is one of its most important duties. Hydrochloric acid (HCL) helps break down and dissolve food by activating enzymes. Enzymes must break down food so that it can be digested and passed into the bloodstream. Through the blood, the body absorbs nutrients and maintains normal function. Without suitable amounts of HCL in the stomach, the body faces serious health issues. When food sits in the stomach and is not broken down by enzymes, it continues to sit there, eventually rotting and putrefying. The putrefied food begins to produce harmful, acidic gases that travel up the esophagus and cause burning sensations to the throat. This is commonly referred to as acid reflux. Additionally, putrefied food destroys the lining of the stomach, due to its acidity, and can

lead to stomach ulcers. Anyone with a pre-existing chronic health condition will suffer from worsened symptoms if the stomach behaves erratically. Whether or not the stomach is the source a chronic health condition, it still needs to be evaluated to ensure it’s working properly. The lack of HCL in the stomach can be caused by a variety of triggers. The most common occurrences are brought on by bad bacteria, poor diet, and the existence of an autoimmune condition. Diet needs to be changed by eating healthy, noninflammatory foods and bacteria can be eradicated through a series of different procedures, both natural and medical. If autoimmune disease is triggering stomach dysfunction, the treatment process becomes more difficult. The other organs of the body must be evaluated as part of the entire bodily system. Chronic health conditions are brought on by the domino effect – one organ triggers one problem, which causes another organ to trigger another problem and in turn worsens the autoimmune condition. Heightened autoimmunity can then lead to stomach dysfunction. Traditional medical approaches towards a lack of HCL in the stomach treat only the symptoms felt by patients. Doctors frequently prescribe drugs (Nexium, Prilosec) to help decrease acid reflux caused by putrefied food. This method treats acid reflux symptoms yet neglects the problem at hand, which is a lack of HCL in the stomach. In this scenario, food will still rot in the stomach and cause further damage. Alternative medical approaches seek to restore the production and release of HCL in the stomach to ensure it works properly. Proper dieting, eradicating harmful bacteria, or introducing supplements that help produce HCL are all methods to promote a healthy stomach. The alternative method is centered on restoring normal body function by correcting the problem at its source, not simply treating symptoms. Embarrassed When You Cough, Laugh Or Sneeze?
Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) happens when physical movement or activity—such as coughing, sneezing, running or heavy lifting — puts pressure (stress) on your bladder, causing the unintentional loss of urine. It isn't related to psychological stress and also differs from urge urinary incontinence (UUI), which is the unintentional loss of urine caused by the bladder muscle contracting, usually associated with a sense of urgency. Stress incontinence is much more common in women than men. If you have stress incontinence, you may feel embarrassed, isolate yourself, or limit your work and social life, especially exercise and leisure activities. Enter Geneveve™ by Viveve! Geneveve™ is a safe, non-surgical approach for revitalizing vaginal tissue. Just like skin, vaginal tissue can become
loose or ‘lax’ over time from childbirth, hormone deficiency or pelvic surgeries. Vaginal laxity leads to issues with sexual sensation, lubrication and urinary incontinence, which can impact a woman’s overall sense of well-being. Clinical studies have shown that during the Geneveve™ treatment, the natural formation of younger, more supportive collagen is activated, which gradually, over the subsequent three to six months, strengthens and revitalizes the area. The Centre for Vibrant Health and Wellness (www.drsalter.com) is the first in the St. Louis area to offer the new Geneveve™ treatment.
Get More Youthful Lips Without Looking Obvious Finally, New Dermal Fillers Create Long-Lasting, Subtle Enhancements Lips symbolize sensuality and sexuality. They play a vital part in verbal and nonverbal communication. We smile, pout, take in food, whistle, and of course, kiss with our lips. The most common, regularly carried beauty-related item is lipstick or lip gloss. It makes lips look their best—full, sensual and youthful. As people age, collagen — the body’s substance that makes lips plump — lessens. Sun exposure over time contributes to the breakdown of collagen in the lips and skin as well. Genetics or years of side sleeping also can create laugh lines (nasolabial folds) around the mouth for those with leaner lips. This loss, or breaking-down, of collagen results in thinner lips and vertical lines around the lips. Juvéderm Volbella® for that ‘je ne se quoi’ look. Finally, there’s a way to minimize the look of aged lips with natural looking results that last up to a year.
Volbella®, a new dermal filler from Juvéderm® has been in use in Europe since 2011 and available in the United States since June of 2016. It’s the best nonsurgical way to achieve a subtle, younger looking lips. It’s a simple treatment. A trained medical professional injects Volbella® gel gently into the lips and facial tissue surrounding the lips. A numbing cream is often used to minimize discomfort. Although there’s no downtime, some patients experience optimal results with a small touch-up treatment after one month. The Juvéderm® collection of fillers are made for different needs. Each product adds volume to a different area of the face to lift cheeks, smooth parentheses lines, or plump the lips. The FDA recently approved Juvéderm Vollure XC™, a longerlasting dermal filler with results lasting up to 18 months. Juvéderm Vollure™ XC adds volume and smooths parentheses lines
and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. It was approved for use in Europe in 2013. As with any medical treatment, there are contraindications and side effects. To ensure you are safely treated and achieve a subtle look, choose a reputable clinic with an experienced doctor and nurse on-site. Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center is the premier center for laser skin treatments and Mohs surgery in the St. Louis area. Its services also include wrinkle relaxation treatments with Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®, a variety of dermal fillers, Kybella® as well as laser treatments for hair and tattoo removal. Anti-Aging Bucket List By Dr. Seth Gerlach
Although many want to, we cannot stop the clock. What we can control is how well and how fast we age. New research indicates that up to 90% of our health is contributed to lifestyle factors, which means that 90% of how fast we age, how we feel, and our risk for disease can be traced back to our daily habits. Feel empowered yet? You should! As you age, would you rather spend those final years sick, non-mobile, and on 10+ medications, or would you rather travel with your friends and family, check off your bucket list, accomplish your purpose and dreams in life, and live abundantly? If you answered the latter, then great! A few important factors need to be looked at in order for you to give yourself the best chance to age gracefully and live abundantly. ✓ Blood sugar control is extremely important for proper aging. As we age, our fasting blood glucose gradually rises. In order to combat this, a low-glycemic diet is prudent in order to prevent damage. An ideal fasting glucose is under 85 mg/dL; anything over this threshold has been shown to have a higher risk of inflammation, blood vessel damage, increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and an increased risk for Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
✓ Inflammation in the gut can present as diarrhea, gas, pain, bloating, or can even be silent, as is the case with many gut infections. Inflammation in the brain can present as brain fog, memory loss, and can even lead to diseases like Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Inflammation in the rest of the body can present as joint pain, muscle aches, and skin conditions. Many people attribute these symptoms to “getting older,” and although these symptoms are common in America, they are by no means normal. We live in a toxic world with over 80,000 chemicals in our air, water, and land. Today, we are exposed to exponentially more environmental pollutants than our grandparents were. Given this, it is imperative that we continually detoxify our bodies. This can include eating a detoxifying diet, adding in certain nutrients to aid detoxification, sweating, and eliminating as many toxins from our life as possible. ✓ Stress hormones can wreak havoc on all of your other hormones, your thyroid, your gut, and your immune system. Finding ways to consciously de-stress is imperative. Things like meditation have been clinically shown to slow aging. ✓ Regular exercise has been shown to lengthen telomeres (the end caps on
32 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | MAY/JUNE 2017
your DNA responsible for aging), reduce inflammation, control blood sugar, aid the immune system, and balance hormones. Weight lifting and high intensity interval training have shown amazing results in recent studies. ✓ Sleep is when your brain and body repairs from the rigorous demands of the day. Losing out on sleep is similar to kicking the can down the road: the body may be able to compensate for a period of time, but after a while the body will break down in some form. Associate Concertmaster St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
Karuna Brand Ambassador Heidi Harris is Associate Concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, a position which she has held for the past twelve years and has been a member of for the last 26 years. To say that Heidi’s lifestyle as a classical musician is rigorous would be an understatement. It entails hours of practicing each day, a daunting audition process, and demanding performances. Practicing one’s instrument for so many hours can take a toll on one’s physical health, resulting in back, neck, and shoulder injuries, as well as tendinitis and carpal tunnel. Recognizing the demands of her career, Heidi has diversified her approach to classical music over the years. Her holistic method, which she refers to as the art of performance, incorporates yoga, meditation, journaling, and mindfulness. Heidi earned her 200-hour certificate at Prajna Yoga in Santa Fe and is now studying to earn her 500-hour also from Prajna Yoga. Heidi teaches yoga at Agape Yoga Studio, Lululemon, and gives private lessons at her own home yoga studio. When she began practicing yoga in 2000, she immediately noticed an alleviation of the neck and back pain she had developed from practicing violin in addition to a substantial decrease in her performance anxiety. Ever since that time, Heidi has been determined to spread the benefits of yoga and meditation to others, particularly other classical musicians. One of Heidi’s great loves is her antique violin (featured with her on the right), made by the Italian luthier Giovanni Battista Guadagnini in 1753. Her stand partner, David Halen, the Concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, plays a violin by the same maker. Having admired the depth and warmth of Halen’s sound for years, Heidi long dreamed to have a similar instrument. She was thrilled to finally purchase her Guadagnini during a dip in the stock market some years ago. Now, the two Guadagnini violins sit side-by-side in one of the nation’s greatest orchestras, performed by two of the finest orchestral musicians. YogaandSpaMagazine.com | MAY/JUNE 2017

Pro Tip on Protein: Quality, Not Quantity
With so much conflicting information in the media and supermarkets, health-conscious consumers are often confused about what nutrition choices are best for them. For example, it is common to wonder how much protein a person needs and whether all proteins are the same. With these questions in mind, Dr. Angela Zeng, PhD and Co-founder of Karuna Nutritional Drinks, shares her opinion on this controversial topic. Zeng says, “As people debate what constitutes an ideal diet, we should understand that the human body is a complex machine that needs a variety of nutrients to power our brain and muscles, repair injuries and fight infections. In addition, there are so many connections between different groups of nutrients. It’s important to appreciate how they all work together to keep us healthy. Protein is vital to powering our bodies, but should be not our sole focus for health.” She follows with a cautionary note: “In large quantities, protein can work against us. For most adults, high protein intake, or about 75 to 100 grams per day, will lead to weight gain if one isn’t also watching total calorie intake. This is because our bodies don't store excess proteins, so we just convert them into sugar and fat." Zeng goes on to point out that many popular eating regimens, including high protein/low carb diets, have been rigorously tested in epidemiology studies with consistent results. Time after time, these studies show that limiting total calorie intake is the most influential factor when it comes to longterm weight control and overall health. It is also important to pay a closer attention to the source of our protein intake. She cites a recent landmark study by Harvard University School of Public Health, which unequivocally concludes that replacing meat and dairy with plant-based proteins leads to a significant increase in longevity and improvement of overall health. Zeng says, “This result, along with other large studies, has validated the benefits of plantbased proteins. Together, these studies highlight the need for us to decrease the consumption of meat, especially processed meat and other animal proteins including eggs and dairy.” Looking ahead, Zeng maintains that shoppers should focus more on the source and quality of proteins: “As we consume more plant-based proteins, it is crucial for us to choose the right type and combination. Unlike animal proteins, most plant-based proteins, such as proteins from peas, coconut, almond and other nuts, are not considered as ‘complete’ because
MyKaruna.com
they are deficient in one or more amino acids that the human body can’t make on its own. Thankfully, there are a few plants on earth whose protein quality can be considered comparable to animal sources, with soybeans and quinoa as the best examples. That is probably why soybeans have been the mainstream diet in many regions of the world for centuries and why quinoa was recommended to NASA to be one of the top food choices for astronauts.” Despite her preference for plants, though, Zeng is not a fan of protein extracts: “Sourcing is important, too. When someone extracts protein from plants, it is not only wasteful, but also alters the balance of amino acid compositions, making many of those plant-based protein extracts even less complete. On top of that, the extracting process introduces many chemicals into the mix, such as surfactants, heavy metals and other additives. Nobody wants those, right? The bottom line is that plant-based proteins are not equal in their qualities and whole food proteins are much healthier than the heavily processed protein extracts." Zeng concludes her thoughts with an affirmation of her company, noting that Karuna's emphasis on using high quality plant-based ingredients in their entireties is what separates them from other products: "Healthy eating starts with healthy ingredients, from the right source and with the right quality. Karuna does that in each and every product.”

MEN MAT on the
by Natalie Piontek
Yoga is and remains a powerful attraction for both men and women. With its integration of strength training and attention to correct posture and body alignment, yoga is an excellent way for men and women to balance out their exercise regimens – particularly when those regimens include challenging sports such as cycling and tennis, just a couple of the hobbies enjoyed by the men in this issue’s Men On the Mat.
Studio: GO YOGA! express Matthew Allison (TOP) In 2003, Matthew reluctantly attended his first yoga class on a date. Although that date didn’t lead to any subsequent encounters, he found friendship and community within the yoga studio. Matthew began teaching yoga in 2007 and was certified as an instructor in 2010. Matthew finds that practicing yoga provides a welcome balance to his career as a musician; it helps him relieve tension from hours of practicing flute, and it also provides him a way of expressing himself through movement. He enjoys both the creativity of the asanas and the discipline of the classes. Matthew practices at GO YOGA! express in Swansea, Illinois, and Practicing Yoga in St. Louis.

He spent nearly four and a half decades not caring about either health or fitness. However, at some point in his early forties, Bill decided to make a change. He started running as well as taking aerobic classes, Tae Kwon Do, and spin classes. Finally, ten years ago, he began practicing yoga and cycling. Four years ago, Bill started practicing
hot yoga. Now, he practices yoga three to five times a week, and cycles 4000 to 5000 miles a year. He is still challenged by inflexible hips and shoulders, but these ailments give him the motivation to continue practicing rather than serve as an excuse to quit.

Since beginning his practice, Christopher has experienced profound improvements in his wellbeing. His sleep has improved, he’s lost weight, his body has been relieved of muscle tension, and he has also experienced a removal of stiffness from his upper body. The staff and instructors and Pure Hot Yoga St. Louis consistently provide him a professional and welcoming place to practice. Christopher is an attorney and also enjoys playing tennis.

Energy Yoga:
Tuning Up And Tuning In What, exactly, is energy yoga? Simply put, ALL yoga is fundamentally energy yoga. When we engage in the holistic yoga practice (a moving meditation that is stripped of outside distractions and intent on harmony of breath, body, and mind), we engage our energetic body and learn to channel that life-force energy known as prana. In the yogic study of the subtle body, we primarily focus on the nadis and chakras: energetic channels and centers corresponding to all physical body systems and their intricate neurological governance. The convergence of the two main nadi channels, the Ida and Pingala, is where we find the third main nadi, the Sushumna, and where the chakras align along the spinal column. In yoga we use Asana, Pranayama, and meditation to go within, harnessing and regulating the flow of prana to the nadis and, in turn, throughout the chakras. Restoring free and balanced movement of prana within the body is a powerful way to support our own physical well-being. Studies have shown that yoga and other energetic practices like Reiki have neuroprotective benefits against depression, dementia, and other chronic ailments, and can improve mood, sleep, and blood pressure.* Energy practices can also lead us to experience the beautiful interconnectedness that we have with all life. The prana flowing within us is a spark of the cosmic energy all around us and thus our very being is one of intimate connection with nature and the heavens. As teachers, our experiences with energy work help empower students and compassionately guide them as they continue deepening their practice. Yoga reminds us that we are part of the cosmic flow, inevitably and fruitfully linking us all to an ever-expanding universe. THE BENEFITS OF MUSCLE BUILDING As each one of us age, we lose muscle mass, which is referred to as Sarcopenia, and bone mineral density, which can result in osteoporosis. Our muscles are composed of various muscle fiber types, both slow and fast twitch. If we do not use these muscles they atrophy and limit our ability to function. At The Exercise Coach we are able to design a right intensity program that enables you to recruit both your slow twitch fibers as well as your fast twitch fibers. Because we are able to recruit more muscle fibers during each exercise set, our clients are able to experience more efficient fat loss, cardiovascular vitality, bone health and other improved wellness outcomes. There are many benefits to increasing muscle with resistance training. They include our bodies ability to burn fat, improved insulin sensitivity, which could lead to a reduction of type II Diabetes and an overall improvement of our quality of life. Increased muscle strength can help prevent future injury and meaningful exercise may reduce the likelihood of some diseases. The ideal way to create a better quality of life is to participate in a strength training program that fits your lifestyle, in the right intensity for you and is sensitive to your unique circumstances. Improving your health and wellness is up to you.

BIG SMALL SHIFTS FOR
RESULTS By Monica Koch
Sometimes, it’s necessary to make big changes for a healthier, happier life. Other times, you can make small shifts and still see big results. Small shifts make it easier to stay on track and lower your risk of failure. Let’s focus on making a few small changes I like to call nutrition shifts. You can start incorporating small shifts right now and still see a huge impact on your overall health.
Nutritious shift 1 - Get more veggies. Start your day
by having veggies with breakfast. Toss a handful of leftover roasted veggies in an omelette, throw spinach in your shake… get creative. You’ll notice you feel more energized, and you’ll stay full longer. I’m all about the fiber! Plus using up leftover veggies keeps food from going to waste!
Nutritious shift 2 - Drink more water. Let’s upgrade our H20 and drink up! I love to add fresh fruit and mint. Try adding any spices you like. Most of us know we need the standard 64 ounces a day. Let’s add two full glasses before lunch and dinner.
Nutritious shift 3 - Try adding one stress-reducing food to your plate each day. Peppers are high in Vitamin C, which has been shown to reduce levels of cortisol in the body. Avocados are another great choice because healthy fat has been linked to lowering blood pressure. Cashews are a great source of Zinc, a mineral that plays a major role in managing the body’s response to stress. Nutritious shift 4 - Make a workout date! I challenge
you to invite a friend to go to a new class or go for a long power walk. It’s the perfect opportunity to connect, and the time flies by.
Make these small nutritious shifts and see BIG results! Monica Koch AFFA personal and group fitness Dimvaloo Presenter Sponsored by 1st Phorm Climawear Ambassador Lululemon Ambassador www.kleanandlean.com

LIVING FIT
Emotional Health Equates to Physical Health Dr. Katcher
Most people who have heart attacks have grey hair. However, grey hair does not cause heart damage. It is simply a related or correlative factor. There is no causative relationship. There exists today a new dynamic population of mature women that have lived a few more years but are far from done. The aging process has become a new focus of scientific research. What is related to aging, and what causes aging, are critical questions. There are, of course, the obvious findings: obesity, stress and poor diet subtract years of life and the quality of our existence. Some cutting edge research shows that there exists a profound causative relationship between exercise and longevity. In addition, a revolutionary finding shows that exercise has a positive relationship with cognitive function and the slowing of mental decline. Exercise can also fight against things related to the onset of dementia. The complex relationship between our physical and emotional health is now under the scrutiny of major research venues. Happiness, peace of mind, and focusing on meaningful activities equals a longer and more productive life. Our society is plagued with depression and the catastrophic impact it has on our lives.
Psychologist, psychiatrists, counselors and therapists are booked solid. Medications flow and yet a lack of happiness exists in too many mature adults. The new research has and will continue to reflect the powerful causative relationship between exercise, mental health and longevity. There exists pro-active things that a mature population can do to slow down and in some cases reverse the aging process. Clearly, diet, exercise and stress reduction are actions, backed by data based research that help. For example ABC Parenting offers consultation on stress reducing factors related to parenting and extended family issues. Certainly the articles and professionals sited in Yoga & Spa Magazine can be venues for age fighting aging scenarios. Yoga, itself has been identified as a major stress reducing agent. Stress reduction slows the aging process. Often simple solutions exist for complicated aging issue.

The Art Of Listening As a Chiropractic Physician and Family Constellation Facilitator and a Psychological Astrologer, my life's work is listening to others. I listen to their words, to the language of their body, and to what I call their bodytalk. Bodytalk is how the body speaks to us through its pain and dysfunction. A great saying I heard once is, "there is always more". When a patient comes in to see me, most often they are experiencing some kind of pain, be it physical or emotional or spiritual. Our bodies house our essence. We can listen as our bodies often speak to us through the language of pain what we may be feeling unconsciously. A patient may come in to see me for shoulder pain, for example, and underneath the
shoulder pain is the pain they may be experiencing in taking care of their sick newborn, or aging parent. As they have to do the care-taking they may not take time to listen to the inner pain they may be feeling in reaction to their care-taking responsibilities. I am trained to listen to the words they are outwardly expressing and helping them to see and care for the words unspoken being held inside. By helping my patients listen to and know their own inner life and where their pain comes from they can bring this understanding to take a more active role in their own healing. We can all hear ourselves at a deep level. The thoughts and feelings we often have deep inside of us can allow us more power

Anti-aging at its best! Activated Charcoal Products
Wellness From Wendy
From the Outside In with grass Spa By Wendy Breese
Our bodies are naturally designed to detoxify, which means taking in the good and eliminate the bad. For instance, the simple act of breathing in fresh oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide is detoxing. When our bodies can’t keep up with natural detoxing we suffer the consequences: premature aging. Looking at this from the skin aspect, you can suffer from conditions such as dark circles, acne, dullness, dehydration or even sallowness. There is one ingredient that is available and is effective in helping with the detoxifying process; activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is a highly absorbent, non-toxic substance. Activated charcoal (or carbon, as it is sometimes called) acts like a magnet to many substances (dirt, impurities, and oil, among others). It can be used for insect bites, and is often given internally to people who suffer from poisoning because it has the ability to absorb the poison and safely eliminate it from the body. It works the same way for your skin. When using activated charcoal on your skin, it will draw impurities, chemicals, oils, and toxins off, and safely eliminate them when you rinse with water. A word of caution though, activated charcoal is so effective that it should not be used on a daily basis. Typical use is once or twice a week. Used too often it can dry out the skin, which may lead to other skin problems. So more is not necessarily better.
Lemongrass Spa recently launched three new skincare products handcrafted with activated charcoal to help your skin detox. Incorporating these products into your skincare routine, or using them all together once or twice a week, will help reduce the aging process of your skin. Your skin will feel luxuriously soft and rejuvenated with each use! If you live in a city or suburb, I would recommend using these more often, as the exposure to pollution is much higher in those areas. Here are some ways you can incorporate each new product into your skincare routine to achieve healthier skin!
Detoxifying Charcoal Face Soap Replace the cleanser you use at night with this face soap. This will help your skin detox from the environmental pollution it has absorbed throughout the day. Even if you work at home, stepping outside for a walk or running errands exposes you to pollution.
Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Polish Mixing activated charcoal with a gentle exfoliator is a double detox. Not only are you removing dead skin build up, but you’re also allowing the activated charcoal to work deeper when exfoliating. After you give this product a gentle scrub on
your skin, allow it to sit for 1–2 minutes and let the activated charcoal absorb more before rinsing. Enhanced with acai berry and raspberry seed oil antioxidants, you’ll enjoy a subtle fruit essence upon application This is perfect if you don’t have time to do a full-face mask or detox system. Include this once or twice a week into your routine.
Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Mask This is great to add to your routine when you have at least 10–15 minutes to be able to enjoy the maximum benefits. If you chose to do your full detoxing routine once a week, then apply this mask after you have cleansed with the charcoal soap and used the Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Polish. Osteoporosis Awareness: Don’t Let a Broken Bone Sneak Up On You By Kyle Zagrodzky
People know that illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes can be fatal, but they don’t often think of porous bones as a true danger until osteoporosis sneaks up on them. Every year, one in four people age 65 and older fall, but less than half of them ever tell their doctor. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), once someone falls once, their chances of falling again double. Falls aren’t the true peril as we age, though—the biggest danger is actually osteoporosis. This porous bone condition is so common that it affects 54 million Americans, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. A fall can hurt, but osteoporosis means one slip can break a bone. Studies suggest about one in two women and one in four men age 50 and older will break a bone because of osteoporosis, which means if it doesn’t happen to you, it will happen to someone close to you.
Breaking a bone can limit activity and make people afraid of getting hurt again, which leads to feelings of depression and isolation. More than 95 percent of hip fractures are caused by falling, and up to 58 percent of people die within one year of fracturing a hip.
Osteogenic loading is a brief set of highly controlled, acute impact events that are clinically proven to significantly increase healthy bone density and muscle tissue growth. The process is safe, yet powerful enough that many have completely reversed osteoporosis.
There are medications on the market that can increase bone density one to two percent per year, but the gains are minimal, and doctors don’t recommend patients use the medicines for more than five years because of side effects and health risks. Exercise, yoga, and weight training can help slow bone loss later in life, but research has shown that these activities can’t build new bone faster than it is lost after age 30. The best way to build bone fast— and the only natural way that we know of—is osteogenic loading, a clinically researched methodology that significantly increases bone density in a short time. One recent study showed postmenopausal females who did osteogenic loading once a week experienced an average increase in bone density of 14% in just six months.

Wrapping Our Brains Around Headaches By Beth Maddox
To effectively provide headache relief for their patients, health care professionals must first identify what type of headache they are dealing with. Aside from headaches due to chemicals (hormones/caffeine/alcohol/gluten, for example) and headaches due to serious medical issues (tumor/brain trauma), three main types of headaches bring sufferers to their health care provider. Migraines have the worst reputation of any type of headache. Given that this monster presents with severe throbbing pain that can last hours to a few days, and can include nausea/vomiting and extreme light/motion sensitivity, this reputation is justified. Migraines often start with irritability and lack of concentration, followed by visual or auditory disturbances, called auras. Migraineurs, often must lie down in a dark room until the pain, which is usually on one side of the forehead/ temple, dissipates, leaving its victim feeling wrung out. Work life and relationships with family/friends often suffer. Currently, the cause of migraines is believed to be a neurological disturbance in which the cortex of the brain is over stimulated, causing a syndrome of symptoms, migraine being the foremost among them. The most effective treatment of migraines is prescription medicines, which calm this over-excitement in the brain.
A much less complicated type of headache is caused by inflammation/degeneration of the joints of the neck themselves (cervicogenic headaches). Each of the joints (facets) of the neck refers a dull, aching pain to the head in a specific and predictable pattern. Pain is worsened with jarring motions, and is usually on one side of the head. Treatment involves soft tissue therapies and posture education (applied by skilled massage and physical therapists) to gain flexibility and length in the muscles surrounding the joint in question, thereby unloading the compression at the joint. Tension Type Headaches (TTH) are caused by trigger points in the muscles and tendons of the neck and head. Trigger points are taut bands within the tissue that refer pain that travels away from the trigger point. This headaches pain is a mild to moderate vicelike pressure in the given muscle’s referral area. TTH is resolved easily with trigger point and neuromuscular therapy applied by a specially trained massage/physical therapist. Knowing which type of headache is at play, can help the headache sufferer seek the best treatment for their specific ailment. Precision Massage, LLC is composed exclusively of licensed massage therapists who are trained in PNMT. Our unique

evaluation process is extremely detailed and allows therapists to uncover the exact soft tissue cause of each patient’s issue. Once identified, the problems are addressed with focused neuromuscular therapy techniques. The result is an extremely efficient and effective resolution of the fascial restrictions causing the distortions, dysfunctions and pain. Only when the restrictions are resolved can this happen. HOME & GARDEN
The Secret Fountain of Youth in Your Own Backyard It’s no secret that stress is top on our list of things to manage in our day-to-day lives. While a limited amount of stress is normal, chronic stress can lead to some pretty serious health conditions. Managing stress through exercise and taking time to recharge can be extremely beneficial to your wellbeing and longevity. Most of us are aware of the relaxing benefits of using a hot tub, but did you know frequent use of one may even make you feel and look younger? Hot tubs have three elements to healing: heat, buoyancy and massage. Think circulation, circulation, circulation! Heated water massage opens blood vessels and improves circulation. As a result, blood flow increases, which makes the delivery of nutrients more efficient. Circulation helps skin cells to repair and rejuvenate. A good soak can leave skin looking younger and more vibrant. Using a hot tub for relaxation and stress relief is an easy, convenient way to reduce tension and eliminate toxins from inside the body. Targeted water therapy relieves pressure from the neck, shoulders and lower back, leaving you feeling refreshed and recharged.
Spa use can also produce relief from migraines, tension headaches, arthritis and even fibromyalgia. Water therapy can help to relieve this pain. Imagine soaking in your spa any time of the day or evening. No appointment necessary! And finally, as we age, regular sleep can often become more difficult. Spending 20 minutes in a hot tub can make you fully relaxed, massaged, warm and ready to fall asleep. It promotes deep sleep which aids in critical repairs that your body needs for a good night’s rest! Maybe enjoying a spa is the secret to living a more relaxed and youthful life.

Advanced, Electricallycharged Alkalized Antioxidant Water System By Marilyn Eagen
As an Energy Medicine Practitioner, I believe that energy work and energy exercises are the foundation for managing our health. I also believe that along with caring for our energy systems, we must also be aware of everything that we put into our mouths. Being conscious of our energy and our physical health is very important to our overall health and well being. Our bodies are made up of approximately 70% water, so it would appear that it is the most important nutrient that we put into our bodies on a daily basis. However, not all water is alike. Our public water is just like a lot of our other foods on the market, it has been altered and is not of the same structure as the water that the Divine provided for us to use here on the earth as our primary nutrient. I have been aware for quite sometime that our water’s molecular structure
is not functioning as efficiently as it was meant to. I have seen many clients who took in a lot of water on a daily basis, yet they still felt dehydrated. Their skin even appeared dehydrated, which speeds up the aging process in all areas of our body. After much research, I have found that most of our public water systems, as well as bottled water did not match what our bodies naturally crave. Some scientists believe that the molecules in our water appear to be clustered due to the chemical processing necessary to makes the water safe. In turn, they are not efficiently absorbing into our bloodstream making it more difficult to keep our bodies hydrated at an optimal level. However, there is a water machine that makes electrolyzed reduced water. This water system not only raises the ph balance in a natural
54 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | MAY/JUNE 2017
way, but ionizes the water with an electrolysis process that leaves the water clean, chemical free and naturally full of antioxidants, much like its original form. Since using this electrically charged alkalized antioxidant water, I personally have noticed an improved level of energy, reduction in everyday aches and pains we occasionally experience in some form, and my digestive system is much happier! I also still continue my energy work, energy exercises and meditation. I believe that it is true that we have to always be aware of what we put into our mouths. I don’t believe in deprivation, I do believe in doing the best we can to care for our body, mind and spirit! To me, this is the key to staying as young and healthy as possible in order to live healthier for the rest of our lives.

Save Time & Money with Totally Trips By Jennifer Evans
The other day a friend of mine told me that they think they have appendicitis or possibly pancreatitis”. I was naturally alarmed and asked, what did your doctor say? They said they hadn’t been to the doctor yet, then added that they guessed it could also be gas and there was no way to tell for sure. I shook my head and said, that’s what a doctor is for. Just like my friend who wanted to be her own doctor by searching her symptoms online, I run into people who think they are experts in travel because they can search flights online. They say, I saved $25 on my flight! I look at their flight details and don’t have the heart to tell them that they have an 18-hour layover and I could have saved them $100 on a direct flight. Hidden Dunes Beach & Tennis Resort
Finding Your Perfect
Beach Retreat
There is something therapeutic about a beach vacation. It could be the soothing sounds of the surf that helps promote rest and relaxation or the coastal breezes that refresh the mind and body. No matter what the reason, it is never too soon to start planning your next beach vacation. To make planning the perfect beach retreat easier, the team at Newman-Dailey Resort Properties, located in Miramar Beach in Northwest Florida, recently shared some of their top tips and recommendations for beach vacation planning. “We ask a lot of questions,” said Newman-Dailey Reservations Manager Kate Weathers. “Are you seeking an active beach vacation near activities and attractions? Do you desire a location that is tucked away and off the beaten path? How many people will be joining you? What are their ages? What type of activities does your group enjoy? There are dozens of beach neighborhoods along Florida’s Emerald Coast and the answers to each question help us narrow the options. Based on each guests’ needs, here are some of our suggestions in Destin and South Walton and why.”
Off the Beaten Path on 30A: Sanctuary at Redfish Some guests love the charm of Scenic Highway 30A, which meanders along the coast through quaint beach neighborhoods. For those looking to get away from it all, we recommend Sanctuary at Redfish in Blue Mountain Beach. This luxury condominium resort is located on approximately 14-acres overlooking one of South Walton's rare coastal dune lakes, Big Redfish Lake. Each condo includes a balcony offering breathtaking lake, preserve and/or Gulf views. Sanctuary at Redfish features three separate pools, two Jacuzzis, a large fire pit, two outside grills, and private pool cabanas. Resort canoes allow guests to paddle the lake and commune with nature. As an added bonus from March through October, Captain Bob ferries guests to the beach on a five-minute pontoon boat ride through the lake, where two chairs and an umbrella are set up on each full day of the stay. www.SanctuaryRedfish.com
Secluded Oasis near the Action: Hidden Dunes Beach & Tennis Resort For travelers who want serenity and the convenience of nearby restaurants, shopping and attractions, Hidden Dunes Beach & Tennis Resort in Miramar Beach is a popular destination. With winding foot paths, lush gardens and relaxing fountains, the secluded resort features three types of accommodation options—Gulf-front condominiums, lake front villas and cozy Carolina-style cottages. The Gulffront resort overlooks miles of white sand beaches and features three pools, hot tubs, grilling stations, horseshoe pits, basketball court and tennis center. Recognized as one of the top 50 tennis resorts by Tennis Resorts Online, Hidden Dunes Tennis Center features six championship Rubico tennis courts, expert instruction and like-level game matching. While Hidden Dunes feels tucked away from it all, it is only a mile from outlet shopping, restaurants, activities and more. www.HiddenDunesDestin.com
Classic Florida Motel: Beachside Inn When couples are looking to a getaway for a week or just a long weekend, Beachside Inn in Crystal Beach is a top recommendation. This cozy motel features 20 colorful, coastal rooms with either a king or two queen beds along with a kitchenette complete with a mini-fridge, microwave, daily coffee service and fresh-baked breakfast bread. Property amenities include a two-tier pool and hot tub, onsite sidewalk café, bike rentals and Camille’s restaurant. A select number of rooms are pet-friendly for guests who wish to bring the furriest member of their family on their trip. www.destinbeachsideinn.com
For Large Groups & Reunions: A Private Beach House For travelers with groups of six or more, a private beach house is the best bet. Like vacation rental condominiums, vacation rental homes feature a full kitchen, washer and dryer and plenty of space to gather. Many homes also feature private pools and incredible outdoor living spaces ideal for a backyard barbecue. Whether it’s a family reunion, gathering of old friends or a girls getaway weekend, private homes can sleep groups from six to 26, providing the perfect home away from home for celebrations of all sizes. www.DestinVacation.com/homes
Close to the Action: Jade East For families who want to be near the Destin Harbor and close to the attractions and activities, Jade East Towers is a great choice. The spacious two- and three-bedroom condominiums all feature large balconies overlooking the beach. Families enjoy the resort amenities, including a Gulffront pool, lighted tennis court, and seasonal beach service as well as nearby attractions including Big Kahuna’s Waterpark and The Track. As an added bonus, each Newman-Dailey stay includes a daily adult pass to Big Kahuna’s as well as other activities such as parasailing, snorkeling, dolphin cruises and more. www.JadeEastCondos.com Whether planning a beach vacation to Northwest Florida or another coastal community, starting the planning process answering questions related to group size, interests and location is a critical step to finding your perfect personalized beach retreat. To talk to a vacation specialist at NewmanDailey Resort Properties, call 1-800-225-7652.

Y&S INTERVIEW
Interview with Rear Admiral Tina Davidson Y&S: Tell us about yourself.
Where you are from and what is your background?
AD: I was born in St. Louis, Missouri and lived there until I joined the Navy in 1986. I come from a large, loving family with five brothers, two sisters and many nieces and nephews. After graduating from St. Louis University Nursing School, I worked as a staff nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Clayton. Y&S: What made you decide to
enlist with the branch of military you are in? AD: I thoroughly enjoyed working at St. Mary’s Hospital. We had a great team of doctors and nurses and we were extremely proud of the care we delivered. However, there was something missing for me. I felt the need to step out of my comfort zone, even if only for a couple of years. After looking at a variety of options, I decided to join the United States Navy with the plan to return to St. Louis after I completed my three-year obligation. My dad served as a Marine and I always enjoyed hearing his stories
of camaraderie and adventure. At that time, however, I didn’t fully appreciate the relationship between the United States Marine Corps and the United States Navy. Nor did I appreciate the honor it would be to care for America’s warfighters and their families. I have so many fond memories of my time in the Navy and cannot imagine doing anything else.
Y&S: What recent promotion did you receive with the United States Navy? AD: Even though I set out to only serve three years, I ended up serving for thirty! On October 14, 2016, I was promoted to the rank of rear admiral (lower half). In March 2017, I assumed the duty of Navy Nurse Corps director, which is the senior nurse for the entire Navy.
Y&S: What do you feel your
strengths are as a woman at this high rank? AD: I have no doubt my strengths come from the values my parents instilled in me, and all my siblings, such as the

value of hard work and persistence. I was also expected to be a “leader” in my early years, often caring for my younger brothers and sisters. My family prepared me for success, and my strengths are a blend of my family upbringing and Navy training.
Y&S: How do you take care of
yourself mentally and physically with the responsibilities of the position? AD: Balance in life can always be a challenge. In the Navy, it is expected that we maintain our readiness by ensuring physical fitness. We are encouraged to make time for exercise, even during the work day, and required to complete mandatory fitness tests twice yearly. To ensure mental stability, I believe you have to know what works for you. I am fortunate to have a wonderful team and together we get through the tough days. Having a strong support group of family and friends is essential, as well as pursuing activities outside of work. I also enjoy yoga, Pilates, barre classes and taking walks around the neighborhood.
Collagen isn’t just for your face anymore! What is Geneveve™?
Does Geneveve Work?
Geneveve is a clinically-proven, single-session treatment that safely and comfortably revitalizes vaginal tissue.
Based on clinical research trials, Geneveve™ is the only treatment to use gentle, deep heating and surface cooling to stimulate the body’s natural collagen formation process. Collagen formation will take place over the course of 1 to 3 months with continued improvement for 6 to 12 months. It is a gentle 30-minute treatment performed in our office.
™
