kristenyarber Direct sunlight is by far the worst time to photograph Chureito Pagoda. And still, it looks like this. I had the most amazing adventure today. From amazing views to beautiful strangers to unplanned photo spots. I went to escape the heat and found way more than I expected.

TAMA HILLS: YOKOTA’S
BACKYARD
The sprawling grounds of Tama Hills drape across 250 acres of lush terrain and spare no amenity. People friendly, pet friendly and a paradise in its own right, Tama Hills has been a Yokota mainstay since its 1982 remodel. This year, the grounds are getting a bit of facelift. Chock full of new features like electricassist bike tours, the brand new Sakura Cottage, APEX facility and more, Tama Hills is the best staycation in the area. Before you book your trip, take a look at Tama’s history and learn a little more about your destination.
The history of Tama Hills dates back to 1938. Prior to World War II, the Japanese Army established a munitions processing and storage plant under direction of arsenal headquarters in Itabashi, located in central Tokyo. Historical records revealed the plant was constructed exclusively to produce explosive
HORIZONS
chemicals. The Tama Arsenal was built according to German plans and specifications. It closely resembled similar facilities in Bavaria, a province in southern Germany. Processed bombs were stored in concrete bunkers, many of which remain intact to this day. The Japanese Army took full advantage of the unique topography that afforded effective natural concealment. So effective, in fact, the depot was undetected throughout the entire war.
Shortly after occupation, the U.S. Armed Forces took possession of Tama as compensatory property and discovered that large areas of the site had been rendered useless. Prior to surrendering, in an apparent act of sabotage, Japanese soldiers had saturated most of the grounds with picric acid, a highly poisonous trinitrotoluene base chemical. The army brought in
decontamination and demolition teams who cleared the site and checked for live ammunition. The recorded U.S. military possession date was 1 November, 1945.
Over the years, different additions bolstered Tama’s recreational roster, including a 489-acre, 18-hole golf course, 21 campsites, putt-putt, softball fields, campsites, horseback riding, paintball target practice and a full-time staff to maintain the beautiful grounds you’ll find there now!
If you’re looking for the perfect weekend getaway, look no further than our very own piece of history at Tama Hills! Book your stay by dialing DSN 227-523 or call commercial at 042377-7009.
Shosenkyo Gorge is part of the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park and covers more than 1,250 square kilometers of forested mountains, valleys and rural towns in the prefectures of Yamanashi, Saitama, Nagano and Tokyo. A paved hiking path wraps around the Arakawa River, offering a view of the mountains, rock formations and the narrow valley. As you follow the trail, you’ll see the Kakuenpo, a rock formation that towers above the riverside and Shosenkyo’s signature monument. At the end of the path, there is a small village consisting of souvenir shops, cafes, restaurants and the Shosenkyo Ropeway, where you’ll find panoramic views of the Southern Japanese Alps and Mt. Fuji on clear days.
Erinji Temple, also known as Samurai Temple, was founded in 1330 as the family temple of Takeda Shingen, the famous warlord who ruled Kai Province or presentday Yamanashi prefecture from 1540 to 1573. There is a garden with a pond at the front of the complex, but the area behind the main hall is the main attraction. Designed by Zen priest and landscape designer Muso Soseki, the expansive garden covers over 2,270 square meters. Visitors can see the garden and Takeda Shingen’s grave from the back porch of the main hall. The grave site is only open to the public on special occasions, but visitors can walk through the nightingale hallway in front of the grave. The hall bears the bird’s name due to its design; the floorboards chirp loudly when walked on and are used to detect intruders.
