EDITOR’S NOTE

What could legacy and imagination have in common? They represent the full circle of life, imagination is in all of us at birth while legacy is what we leave behind. The choices we make in between shape our children, environment, and the creative world we build together. Think back to childhood and tracing our hands in class, gifting handprint art to families, chasing our siblings outside or planting seeds in a garden. Those small moments reflect something bigger: the impact we leave behind. The planet is our inheritance, shaped by those before us. To ensure the next generation receives the same Earth, we must recognize international holidays like Earth Day on page 20. Find out how to practice connecting with our environment, and where to go if you want to be surrounded by the outdoors!

Like our Earth, military children experience constant change. They grow up learning how to adapt and be receptive to a changing environment and community, like the Henry kids on pages 10 and 11. Resiliency is built in these children, most going on to serve in our military or work for our government, leaving behind legacies of strength. As kids, we translate our hopes, dreams and experiences into art. We built sand castles and dreamed of living in them; we colored pictures of us and our whole family even if not everyone was together at that time; we sang like we were going to America’s Got Talent. Those young minds are still in you! Check out the Air Force Art Competition highlighted on page 13, everyone has that creativity that desires to be let out of its cage!

SPRING ELEGANCE

QUARTERLY CRAFTED DINNERS

OFFICERS’ CLUB

Chef Leonel Uy is the powerhouse behind the delicious food served in Chico's Chop House, and he is bringing us more of his delicious dinners and moody atmospheres. Starting on Saturday, 3 May, some of us here on base will get to experience Spring Elegance, the first of many crafted dinners to come. Chef Leo says he wants to bring a fine-dining service to the people on base, as there hasn’t been an upscale restaurant. Working in the New Sanno Hotel for 15 years, he most enjoys creating fusions between different cuisines. For Spring Elegance, he is bringing us a fusion of French, American and Asian foods. “My favorite thing to do when I go somewhere new is to make an adobo dish using local ingredients,” said Chef Leo, explaining his curious and adventurous personality, which will show at the crafted dinners. During this up-scale dining experience, guests will be served a 5 course meal; starting with an amuse bouche (a small light bite), followed by an appetizer, a first-main dish consisting of seafood, meat for a second-main dish, and finally, a dessert. Customers

can enjoy special wine, soda, water, or any other beverage from the bar. At Spring Elegance, enjoy true sophistication and an elevated experience from an attention to detail and artistic presentation.

A self-taught chef, Uy never went to culinary school. He was inspired after taking a summer job at an American military base in the Philippines, and first learned how to make pizzas. Still never tired of his career, he said “you’re not working hard if you love what you do.” After almost 35 years, he has perfected his craft in making visually stunning and flavorful foods. Throughout his time as a culinary artist, Chef Leo explains “my favorite part about cooking is watching my customers’ reactions after tasting my food.” At Spring Elegance, and the other Quarterly Crafted Dinners to come, Chef Leo’s passion and expertise will bring a new level of fine dining to the community—one beautifully plated dish at a time.

Yokota’s Pet Care Center offers “pet tag” engraving services to keep your pet safe and stylish! Offering a variety of colors, sizes and shapes to make their tag as special as they are. Chic, durable, and ready for any adventure!

*Free engraving with the purchase of any tag for $5.

FUJI SHIBAZAKURA FLOWER PARK AND MT FUJI 5TH STATION

SUN • 11 MAY

The Fuji Shibazakura Flower Park at Lake Motosu near Mt Fuji is one of the best and most popular locations to see the shibazakura flowers (pink moss or phlox moss in English). The venue of the festival is located just south of Lake Motosuko in the Fuji Five Lakes area, offering breathtaking views of Mt Fuji, with the vast Shibazakura flower field in the foreground. Approximately 800,000 stalks of Shibazakura of five varieties are on display, producing delightful fields of pink, white and purple colors in different hues. Festival stalls selling pots of pink moss, Shibazakura-themed souvenirs, food and local produce complete the festival. The Fuji five lakes region is also known for volcanic caves and we will visit the Wind Cave. The Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station lies approximately on the halfway point of the Yoshida Trail, which leads from Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine at the base of Mt Fuji. It is the most popular of the four 5th stations on Mount Fuji and the best developed with ease of access by public or private transportation. At 7,500 feet above sea level, the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station offers a commanding view of the Fuji Five Lakes area below, making it a popular spot even for those who are not intent on climbing the mountain.

EARTH DAY with TAMA HILLS

Tama Hills celebrates Earth Day everyday. Occurring every year on 22 April, this day is a global movement dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues and inspiring action to protect our planet. First observed in 1970, it has grown into a worldwide e ort involving millions of people who advocate for clean energy, conservation, and sustainable practices. Spend time at Tama Hills, surrounded by tall trees, crunchy leaves beneath your feet, fresh air, and the smell of sweet blooming flowers. Earth Day is important as it reminds us that our natural resources are not infinite. It reminds us that pollution and habitat destruction threaten the health of both the planet and future generations. Connecting with nature is so important during this time! At Tama Hills, you can camp out, ride horses or bikes, practice archery, and so much more. By connecting with our environment and participating in activities such as tree planting, cleanups, and conservation initiatives, we take small but meaningful steps towards a healthier Earth for all of us. There are changes happening to our environment and our climate. This is your call to action – protecting the environment isn’t just an option, it's our responsibility. To take your first steps towards observing this International Holiday, check out all that Tama has to o er!
