EDITOR’S NOTE
It’s officially starting to warm up. After this cold and wet winter, no one is more ready for the warm weather and eye-catching nature growing back than I am! My name is Melanie Cruz, I am the new writer-editor for marketing. Heather Olson left a great spot for me to fill, and I couldn’t be more ready to do so. I graduated in 2023 from my home state, South Carolina, with a Mass Communications degree. I am eternally grateful for my family and my professors that supported me, like Drs. Stan Diel and Kay Packett, who have both traveled the world, taught me dry humor, to not take life too seriously, and inspired me in so many other ways. I lived there for 23 years and always dreamed of traveling the world. Thankfully, being married into the military helps with that. One of my greatest dreams? To see cherry blossoms in person! Coincidentally, we have a few recommendations for seeing the blooming sakura trees in the area on page 13.
I just moved here in November with my partner who is active-duty, and we have already seen so much of Tokyo. Japan is stunning, we are thrilled to see more, like all of the famous temples; and I know you are too! It has the most intricate traditions, the most respectful people, mouth-watering food, every kind of terrain you could want to see, and don’t forget the sake! I plan to bring you the most intriguing articles, painting vivid pictures in your mind’s eye of the fabulous trips and events happening here on base like ESports on page 8. I hope to convey the most authentic experiences into detailed words and stories for you all, and bring insights to not-so-popular national days like National Sleep Day on page 25.

Yokota Esports
For some, gaming is a way to blow off steam after a long day at work. For others, it’s just a hobby. For those who participate in Yokota Esports tournaments, it’s a competition.
Gamers have been gathering on Yokota Air Base to claim victory in various games since the first event in the summer of 2022. The Air Force Gaming Program at Yokota was started by MSgt Steffan Gray when he became a base ambassador, and is now a PACAF regional ambassador. Their courts and fields consist of PCs, tabletop gaming and console systems, while their spoils include Force Support Squadron (FSS) gifts, exclusive swag, and more. Quarterly tournaments can attract up to 125 people depending on the game, though the numbers have steadily grown as the community grows. While still a relatively new organization, Yokota Esports is known for welcoming gamers of all ages and skill levels, offering an inclusive environment for players to connect and compete.
Yokota Esports isn’t just about gaming— it’s about community. For Airmen and others stationed on Yokota Air Base, these tournaments provide a much-needed outlet to unwind, recharge and build new friendships. TSgt Jay Mason, SrA Luke Mariano, and A1C Aryan Rose are the Ambassadors who run the program year-round, doing all the heavy-lifting for Esports. Typically included games are Super Smash Brothers, Call of Duty, Fortnite, Mario Kart, Tekken, Street Fighter, and tabletop games like Magic the Gathering, Warhammer 40K and more. Prizes range from high-end gaming equipment to official PACAF Esports recognition! This month, Yokota Esports is taking its competition to the next level with participation in the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) Gaming Tournament. The main game is Call of Duty Black Ops 6, where the winners from January’s tournament will compete against other bases for the championship title.
The PACAF tournament not only highlights individual skills but also showcases the growing importance of gaming as a tool for boosting morale, energy and unity among Airmen. By participating, gamers demonstrate that Esports is more than just entertainment— it’s a way to build resilience, teamwork and a sense of belonging; even in the high-pressure environment of military life.
As Yokota Esports continues to expand, organizers are planning more frequent tournaments, collaborative events with other bases, and even charity streams to give back to the local community. With each event, the organization cements its place as a vital part of Yokota Air Base’s culture.
Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or a casual player, Yokota Esports offers something for everyone. So grab your controller, join the action and be part of the growing legacy of gaming on Yokota Air Base!

BEAUTY & BLOOMS SAKU SEASON IN JAPAN
It’s spring time! The days are getting warmer, the sun is brighter, lush green grass is growing back, and the cherry blossoms are starting to blanket Japan in pink and white petals that come and go with little time to truly cherish them. Rivers, streets and shrines are lined with people from around the world trying to get a glimpse at the fleeting beauty of the famed sakura trees of Japan. If you are looking for your next adventure, and want to see them in their peak season, check out some of the best locations to see the cherry blossoms before they fall.
1. UENO PARK
Mid Mar–Mid Apr
The paths of Ueno Park are lined with over 1,000 cherry trees, the first of which were planted by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate (1603–1868). Located only four stops from Tokyo station, Ueno Park is conveniently placed and a wonderful way for the whole family to see the blossoms. After the festival, the family can stop at the Ueno Zoo or one of the many museums surrounding the area to round out a day of fun.
3. SHINJUKU GYOEN
Early Apr
Featuring more than 1,000 cherry trees of different varieties, blooming at slightly different times, you are likely to find a less crowded spot. Spacious lawn areas covered in abundant green grass, the atmosphere is calm, peaceful, and tranquil. Due to the earlier and later blooming trees, this is the perfect outing for those of you who may miss the main season by a week or two.
2. OKAZAKI CANAL
Mid Mar–Early Apr
The historical city of Kyoto is the backdrop to the Okazaki Canal, where hundreds of sakura trees border the waterway and create stunning scenery for a 25-minute canal cruise. Home to the Nanzen-ji Temple and the torii gate of Heian Shrine, a trip to Okazaki Canal is one that promises to be full of beautiful blossoms and traditional architecture.
4. SUMIDA PARK
Early Apr
The park stretches for a few hundred meters along both sides of the Sumida River, offering perfect views of the Tokyo Sky Tree. With some food stands available, you can grab a snack while enjoying the sweet scent of the blooming trees and an eye-catching view everywhere you turn. Located on the river, you can even hop on one of the boats to cruise around, offering even more unique picturesque moments.
SHINGEN-KO SAMURAI FESTIVAL
The city of Kofu, in Yamanashi Prefecture, celebrates the legacy of Takeda Shingen every year, the hierarchical lord of present-day Kofu. The annual Shingen-ko Samurai Festival is held every year in April with the highlight of the festival being the Koshu Battalion Deployment, a reenactment of more than 1,500 people dressed in samurai costumes and heading off to war. This parade is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest gathering of samurais in the world. The re-enactment is usually led by a famous actor known as Takeda Shingen. After the deployment ceremony and sake rituals, bathed in torchlight and surrounded by his 24 generals, the actor then leads his army along the streets of Kofu City. Shingen was an exceptional military strategist and was admired by followers and rivals alike. His cavalry, which was said to be the strongest in the 16th century Sengoku Period, has been widely described through the ages as the symbol of his strength. He also excelled in judicial and administrative matters and his ideals were used by many feudal lords to come. This period was also known as the “Age of Warring States”, and is described as a turbulent and violent time for Japan as rival warlords fought bitterly for control of the country.

Celebrated every year on 21 March this day of low-key celebration honors poets and encourages people to read, write and teach poetry. The earliest forms of written poetry are thought to be from the 25th century BCE! The Yokota Library has a curated assortment of poetry books that can be checked out anytime. Here, you can read diverse poems from all kinds of different writers. If you haven’t heard of Edgar Allen Poe, you have definitely heard of William Shakespeare. Famous for Romeo and Juliet, he was also a renowned poet, and still considered the greatest poet of all time. Edgar Allen Poe’s poem “Dream-Land”, considered his first poetic piece, was published in 1844, 228 years after Shakespeare died.
Still today, poetry is thriving. Now it is flourishing most in “Poetry Slams” or competitive events where poets perform their original work in front of an audience and judges. These
poets write on anything and everything. Ranging from stories of growth, hardship, poverty, trauma, success, becoming parents and so much more. If you have any desire to write poetry, I recommend most to go to the Yokota Library and read some of the works they house there. Get a feel for what rhythm you enjoy most; Haiku, a short three-lined poem hailing from Japan, is the most popular; Ballad, which is a storyteller’s song, are very emotion-provoking; and Sonnet, 14 lines of pure heart-on-your-sleeve kind of outpouring of love from the writer. Go to our library on base, read at your own pace, and let your heart race!
