EDITOR’S NOTE

As we get older, many of us experience a sense of Yuletide ennui. The holidays just don’t seem to be the same as they were when we were young. It’s usually around this time that we realize the seasonal magic we feel so nostalgic for was actually the result of hard work done by the people who loved us most. Cookies didn’t bake themselves, decorations weren’t displayed by accident, and presents weren’t chosen randomly; these were intentional acts by someone who cared deeply for us and wanted to create the ambiance of the season.

While they might not be family, the team at the Taiyo Community Center shows a similar level of dedication to creating special events for the base. It’s not that we aren’t grateful, but few people realize who is responsible for events like Winter Wonderland, Celebrate America, and so many others, and the amount of effort required.

In this issue of Horizons, the main article, The Force Behind Every FSS Event: The Team at the Taiyo Community Center, explores the logistics and planning that go into making these events possible. Despite the many challenges, the staff members are passionate about bringing Yokota together. Many of us will be celebrating far from extended family, but this base certainly doesn’t lack community, thanks to our community centers.

You’ll also find a comprehensive list of FSS holiday happenings. From the Christmas/Farmers Market to photos with Santa—both kids and pets!—there’s plenty to do to make your spirit bright. With that, I hope you have a joyous holiday season and a fantastic New Year!

Although there are only 13 full-time staff members, the team at the Taiyo Community Center is responsible for planning and producing some of the biggest events on base. The Haunted House, Matsuri, Celebrate America, Winter Wonderland, and many others, including the monthly Farmers Market, are made possible by their dedication and commitment to creating the best experience for those stationed at Yokota.

Pulling off these events requires Herculean efforts from the Taiyo team. Planning typically begins six months in advance and demands countless hours of work from start to finish. While securing entertainment is the most critical and challenging aspect, dozens of other logistics also need to be considered. A single event could require coordination and cooperation from several different squadrons.

Civil Engineers and Logistics and Readiness need to be informed for equipment setup and teardown; Security Forces ensure safety; risk assessments are required for certain performers, and medical personnel often increase staffing during major events. The checklist is extensive, and this is just what happens behind the scenes.

“None of this would be possible without this team. None,” emphasized King, the Director of Yokota Community Centers. Even a few minutes into his interview, it’s clear how proud he is of them. In addition to the Taiyo, King oversees the Yujo Community Center, a gathering place for food, resources, and gaming.

His pride is certainly well-founded. A peek into his office reveals an enormous whiteboard calendar that spans the length of the room, tracking events throughout the year. It’s impressive but also daunting when you realize how much goes into the planning process.

Large events aren’t all they handle. They also host weekly classes, community programs, and take reservations for events at their facility. These often include commanders’ calls, promotion ceremonies, the Air Force Ball, and

more. “We’re not a Monday through Friday operation,” King explained. “There are a lot of late nights and early mornings.”

As King underscored, the staff makes everything possible, handling dozens of tasks and logistics.

Reona Kato, an MWR Program Aide, described the range of her duties, from translating for non-Japanese speakers to coordinating with Security Forces for events. She stays busy and feels fortunate to have her job.

“I love helping people,” she said. “It makes me feel good knowing they can have a good experience because of my work.”

For Kato, community is about bringing people together, a sentiment shared by her colleague Satoshi Hada, the MWR Program Assistant. Having worked at Taiyo for nearly five years, Hada ensures that everything runs smoothly, whether administratively or during activities and events.

“It’s a lot of pressure,” Hada admits, “but I love it. Seeing people enjoy the events or classes makes everything worth it.”

The Taiyo Community Center team’s dedication is evident not only in the events

they organize but also in their genuine care for the community they serve. Their work is about more than just arranging activities; it’s about creating moments that bring people together, foster connections, and build memories. They do it all with a passion that transcends their job descriptions, embodying a spirit of service and camaraderie that resonates throughout everything they do.

Makoto Yoshida, another MWR Program Aide, is one reason the Taiyo continues to provide exceptional programming. For nearly three years, he has provided customer service, maintained the facility, and assisted in event planning. For Yoshida, keeping a positive attitude and treating everyone with kindness and respect is key.

“Everyone uses the Taiyo,” Yoshida noted. “Everyone, from airmen to the commander. But to me, it doesn’t matter. Treating everyone equally and making sure they have a good time is important. We are all part of the community here.”

SNOW MONKEYS AT THE NAGANO MONKEY PARK

TRIP 1: SAT • 11 JAN

Trip 2: SUN • 19 JAN (Adults 18 & Up Only)

Trip 3: SAT • 25 JAN

Tour cost includes your bus transportation and admission to the Monkey Park. Please be prepared to walk for about 45 minutes (1.5 miles) on a slightly uphill, paved and unpaved, icy path to get to the park. Some sections may be steep, and there are more than 70 steps at the final portion leading to the park. Snowshoes or boots are highly recommended. Please bring a heavy jacket, as the temperature will be cold, and snow is expected on the mountainside. Baby strollers are not recommended as the trail to the park is covered with snow and ice.

Since 1964, many people from around the world have visited the Nagano Jigokudani Monkey Park to observe the lifestyle of the Japanese Macaque, more popularly known as the “Snow Monkeys.” Featured in many documentary specials, including National Geographic, this park has gained worldwide recognition. The Snow Monkey is native to northern Japan and is wellsuited to surviving winter temperatures below 5°F. They have brown-gray fur, a red face, hands and bottom, and a short tail — often appearing remarkably human-like. In the wild, they spend most of their time in the forests, feeding on seeds, buds, fruit, invertebrates, berries, leaves, and bark. The monkeys range in body length from 2.5 ft to about 3 ft. The males weigh about 22–28 lbs, while the females are around 12 lbs.

The park is located at an elevation of 2,800 ft in a harsh environment where snow covers the ground for one-third of the year. This area is called Jigokudani, meaning “Hell Valley,” due to the steep cliffs and hot spring water steaming from the earth’s surface, resembling hell. There are many hot springs in the area, making it a paradise for the couple of hundred monkeys that live there. We’re fortunate too, because we can enter their world and watch them enjoying themselves. Watching these monkeys play and take a dip in the hot spring baths, especially during the snow season, is truly a unique experience. A visit to the Snow Monkey Park is highly recommended.

For Edrianne Flores-Arend, a hula and Ori Tahitian dance instructor at the Samurai Fitness Center, dance is more than just physical exercise—it’s storytelling. Each graceful movement embodies a rich cultural and historical narrative.

Having practiced both forms since her teenage years, dance has also played a pivotal role in shaping her military career. The discipline needed to excel instilled resilience, dedication, and a strong sense of teamwork—qualities she applies daily in her military life.

To anyone interested in taking classes, Flores-Arend encourages them to begin, even if they feel hesitant. “You’ll never know what you’re capable of until you take that first step,” she said. Start today! Contact the Samurai Fitness Center for more details.

Culinary Fundamentals

In September, eleven Airmen attended the first Culinary Fundamentals class held at the Samurai Café on Yokota Air Base. From Andersen to Eileson, participants came from Air Force bases around the Pacific and Alaska to learn how to process and prepare different foods and meals.

“This training focuses on the core competencies and skills needed to shape a top-tier food preparation professional,” explained Technical Sargeant Suzan Le, a shift leader at the Samurai Dining Café.

A1C Roderick Pollard and A1C Jamir Jones were recognized as the winners for their outstanding culinary performances. The top performers were A1C Roderick Pollard and A1C Gabrielle Elder.

Although there are no firm plans yet, there is a possibility of the course being offered again in the future.

“We look forward to hosting it once more and welcoming participants to an engaging and enriching experience,” said Le.
