Take a trip to Forest Adventure and swing from the canopy like a real-life Tarzan. Cling onto climbing holds or inch up wooden ladders to scale impressively tall trees. Navigate from branch to branch as you swing on ropes and glide through the air on zip lines. Test your balance on rickety bridges, swaying rings and spaced-out, wooden platforms. Those inclined to falling can rest assured their harness will catch them.

Since invention in the 1990s, outdoor parks have sprung up all over the world drawing in people of all ages and interests; nature lovers appreciate the chance to get outdoors and city dwellers enjoy the thrill. Similar in feel to an amusement park but without the carbon footprint, the innovative courses built within the trees offer guests a stimulating, physically challenging and fun experience.

Three families share their experiences and lessons learned living at Yokota Air Base.

T

he Wynne, Gueits and O’Maielson children are all too familiar with the exciting yet daunting task of moving abroad. With the exception of Gueits’s two youngest, the children have moved a total of four times during their short lifetime. These young world travelers have lived all over the globe from Germany to Hawaii to Alaska and have experienced their fair share of difficulties in living the military lifestyle.

All three families’ children were in agreement that the hardest part of moving is leaving friends behind. Austin Wynne also remembered feeling apprehensive when he first heard the news they were moving to Japan. “I had so many friends…thinking about having to leave them — and leaving America in general — that scared me.” Japan also takes some getting used to with its foreign language, alien signs and inversed streets.

Yet, the children have come to love Japan and consider it home. They travel often: The Wynnes tap into ITT, the Gueitses road trip to Japan’s must-see locations in their family car and the O’Maielsons get out to explore Japan’s forests and shrines. The families share a love for eating local cuisine and immersing themselves in the culture. A handful of the children have even learned some Japanese and Connie Gueits’s youngest child, Rafael, spent his first few years of education in a Japanese school. The children are aware of their unique homebase and how it’s shaped them into more open-minded citizens. Corey Wynne had many of his preconceived notions of Japan disproved and Jocy Gueits feels her family’s experiences abroad have made them more accepting of cultural differences.

Chief Michael Wynne; his wife, Andrea Wynne; and their two sons, Austin and Corey. Chief Wynne has served over twentytwo years in the military.

Connie Gueits and her children Kai, Jocelyn (Jocy), Marcos and Rafael. Master Sgt. Antonio Gueits, is currently serving a short tour in Osan.

UNITED STATES AIR FORCE

Coralyn O’Maielson and her mother, Jennifer Wilson. The family moved to Yokota six months ago when Jennifer was awarded a position at DSRJ.

Yokota Air Base

The children are also involved within the Yokota community. The Gueitses stay active with a variety of sports offered at school and the Youth Center, and the Wynne family frequents Tomodachi Lanes and the Library. Coralyn O’Maielson can often be found at the Natatorium practicing yoga or swimming. She also plays the cello and is a varsity shooter on the high school’s JROTC marksmanship team. They all appreciate the facilities offered on base and encourage others to take advantage of them.

“EVERYBODY IS GOING THROUGH THE SAME CHALLENGES SO, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE OVERSEAS, EVERYBODY IS COMING TOGETHER TO BE A FAMILY, TO TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER.”

The base’s safe environment and small size allows the children to explore on their own and make it to their extracurricular activities in a short period of time. Coralyn’s father, Arthur Yemaiel, expressed his gratitude. “We don’t have to drive them all over the place … that creates more time for the family to interact and then the kids can have individual liberties.” The families also appreciate Yokota’s close-knit community. As Michael Wynne explained, “The bonus of being in this community … is everybody is going through the same challenges so, especially when you’re overseas, everybody is coming together to be a family, to take care of each other.” The three families have certainly experienced a wealth of unique opportunities and they’re grateful for it. After contemplating their life here in Japan, Andrea Wynne decided she wouldn’t trade it for the world. “Most people want to travel and explore the world and see things and the military is facilitating that process. With all the challenges and deployments and all that, I would not change anything.” Most Yokota families would agree; despite its challenges, they wouldn’t change a thing.

SHIBAZAKURA FESTIVAL & MT. FUJI FIFTH STATION Sat • 11 May Cultural Connection

Visit the Shibazakura Festival to witness the blooming Shibazakura flowers — phlox moss fittingly nicknamed lawn cherry blossom. The average-looking moss transforms every April and May, carpeting the ground in beautiful flowers. Located within the Fuji Five Lakes area, the festival venue provides guests with breathtaking views of Mount Fuji as the vast Shibazakura flower field is displayed in the foreground.

Take in the 800,000 vibrant hues of pink, white and purple plants and explore the festival stalls selling pots of pink moss, Shibazakura-themed souvenirs and local produce. Then, drive along scenic roads to reach Mount Fuji’s Fifth Station. Stand half way up Japan’s tallest mountain at 7,546 feet above sea level. Purchase souvenirs at the charming shops and visit Komitake Shrine to get an aerial view of the nearby cities and Lake Yamanaka.

Sign-up starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 6 April at ITT. 227-7083 • Bldg. 327 Visit YokotaFSS.com/ITT for more information.

Many of her commitments led to accomplishments such as her rank as Lieutenant Colonel in the Civil Air Patrol, an Honorable Mention from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee of the Harvard Model Congress Asia in Singapore and a Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award for completion of 377 volunteer hours. Bella considers her glider pilot Solo Wings her proudest achievement.

KIDS' KORNER

Fri • 19 Apr • 6–9 p.m. Come out and enjoy a scavenger hunt teen style! Join us for games, food and tons of fun.

Isabella Mollison seemed to take on all the opportunities she could as soon as she jumped off the plane and stepped onto Yokota Air Base last year. Bella’s 4.43 GPA in and of itself demonstrates her diligent work ethic and thirst for knowledge but her achievements don’t stop there. She challenges herself beyond the typical school subjects with activities like aerospace education, environmental conservation, cyber-security, international relations and leadership philosophy.

Within the Civil Air Patrol, Bella has shown herself to be a bright, inquisitive leader who enjoys problem solving. As the OIC of the Birchwood Composite Squadron Color Guard, she has an impeccable eye for precision and perfection — personality traits that aided in her appointment as the Cadet Commander of the Far East Encampment. Upon graduation, Bella plans to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy or Georgetown University to study international affairs and environmental studies. She aspires to become a diplomat and pass legislation that advances environmental conservation and sustainable economic development within post-industrialized countries and impoverished nations.
