IDING R JAPAN’S MOUNTAINS: TIPS

FROM ODR STAFF

Japan’s ideal winter weather and snow make it a popular skiing and snowboarding

destination for riders from all over the world. Luckily for Yokota, the snow powder — affectionately nicknamed “J-Pow” — is just a drive away. Gain some insight from Yokota Outdoor Recreation’s (ODR) ski and snowboard instructors — Matt, Fenton, Yoshi and Kuni.

ODR rents out all sorts of quality ski and snowboard gear at an unbeatable price.

GEAR UP

Besides the obvious essentials such as a snowboard or skis and boots, you’ll need highquality ski goggles that won’t fog up. Comfortable socks (preferably wool) and warm, waterproof gloves are clutch for

keeping warm. Wear spandex or leggings and a fast-drying shirt underneath your waterproof jacket and ski pants. Try boots on before renting or buying them. Boots that are small or too large will cause foot pain and make skiing or snowboarding difficult.

STAY POSITIVE

It’s important to have the right mindset when hitting the slopes for the first time. You won’t be Shaun White after your first lesson. “By the end of the day you will not be going over jumps. You will not be doing rails or pipe ... Know that you’re going to

fall and you have to be okay with that,” Matt coaches. The truth is, you’re guaranteed to fall your first day — multiple times. Still, the challenge is fun and gliding down a slope for the first time is invigorating. Rather than harping on your mistakes, stay positive and enjoy the new experience.

BE SAFE

Skiing and snowboarding can be dangerous if you’re not careful. Even ODR’s ski and snowboard

MATT SILVIA RECREATION ASSISTANT SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR

Matt grew up skiing in the northeast and eventually transitioned over to snowboarding as a teenager.

FENTON FITZGERALD JR. DIRECTOR SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR

Fenton started skiing when he was 12. His friends convinced him to try snowboarding and he instantly fell in love with the sport.

JUNJI KUNIMATSU

(KUNI)

TOUR GUIDE SKI & SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR

Kuni started skiing at the age of four. He travelled as a snowboard professional and taught at ski resorts around the world before settling back down in Japan.

TAKE LESSONS instructors have had their share of scrapes and bruises while riding. ODR staff highly recommend ski helmets and that riders stay away from trees and rocks. Yoshi always tells his students, “Trees are not your friend.” Consider your experience level and physical abilities before going down a tricky slope or attempting a difficult trick. And if you feel yourself falling, do it safely! Avoid falling on your wrists as they’re prone to breaks and fractures. When skiing, it’s best to fall sideways on your hip. Snowboarders should fall forwards onto their forearms or backwards on their behind.

Improve by leaps and bounds with lessons. Learning from a professional instructor will also prevent bad habits from the start. ODR offers lessons on many of their trips. When you sign up, simply let the staff know you’re interested in taking a lesson for a small extra fee. Many of the ski resorts also offer intermediate and advanced lessons in English.

YOSHIMASA NAKAMURA

(YOSHI)

TOUR GUIDE SKI INSTRUCTOR

Yoshi has skied since he was a child. Yoshi loves skiing in powder and has 10 years of teaching experience.

HAVE FUN

Skiing and snowboarding are great ways to get outside and explore Japan’s beautiful winter season. Plus, gliding on top of the snow as you ride down a mountain is pure fun. As Kuni so mildly puts it, “There’s nothing better to do in the winter so you might as well ski.”

See pages 12 and 13 for information on ODR’s upcoming ski and snowboard trips. OUTDOOR RECREATION 225-4552/4553 • Bldg. 564 /YokotaOutdoorRec /Yokota.Odr

A LL JA PA N ’S FES T I VA L S IN ON E At Furusato Matsuri Festival

Sat & Sun • 12 & 20 Jan Cultural Connection

Thousands flock to Tokyo Dome every year to get their festival fix during the winter off-season. Furusato Matsuri is a festival made up of many mini festivals representative of different regions in Japan. Look up to see hundreds of paper lanterns floating high in the sky — a spectacle typically held in Akita, Japan. Witness the pulling of giant samurai and kabuki themed floats from the Nebuta Festival, held in Northern Japan’s Amori Prefecture. Or watch performers from the Yosakoi Festival dance with their “naruko” (wooden clapping instruments) as they sway their hips and swing their arms to traditional music. A variety of regional, festival foods from all over Japan fill the Dome with aroma. Try seafood ramen from Hokkaido, soki soba from Okinawa, Tohoku’s beef tongue, Nagano’s buckwheat dumplings and Nara’s “mehari-zushi” (rice balls wrapped in pickled greens). With over 300 booths to choose from, the food options are limitless! Be sure to save room for the assortment of sweets and beer too!

Sign-up starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 1 December at ITT. 227-7083 • Bldg. 327 Visit YokotaFSS.com/ITT for more information.

RUNWAY SAFETY

FAA.gov Runway Safety embodies a safe flight from start to finish. It continues to be one of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) highest priorities and encompasses pilots, air traffic controllers and airport vehicle drivers.

AIRPORT DIAGRAMS Search the FAA Database using our search tool to access PDF versions of airport diagrams. Airport diagrams are specifically designed to assist in the movement of ground traffic at locations with complex runway or taxiway configurations.

HOT SPOTS A hot spot is a location on an airport movement area with a history of potential risk of collision or runway incursion and where heightened attention is necessary. WHAT IS A RUNWAY INCURSION? Any occurrence at an aerodrome involving the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle or person on the protected area of a surface designated for the landing and takeoff of aircraft. THERE ARE FOUR CATEGORIES OF RUNWAY INCURSIONS: Category A: A collision is narrowly avoided. Category B: Separation decreases and there is a significant potential for collision which may result in a time critical corrective or evasive response to avoid a collision. Category C: Ample time and/or distance is provided to avoid a collision. Category D: Incorrect presence of a single vehicle, person or aircraft on the protected area of a surface designated for the landing and takeoff of aircraft but with no immediate safety consequences.
