Visit Par 3 any Thursday evening and you’re likely to see over 25 kids putting and laughing with friends thanks to Yokota Golf’s PGA Jr. League team. The program can be found at many golf courses across the U.S., but Yokota’s team, the Fuji Flyers, is the first PGA Jr. League of America established overseas. During practice, students are encouraged to spread out and play with teammates while PGA coaches Patrick Bowman and Jim Shaw roam the course and give pointers to students — a lesson format structured enough to teach yet loose enough to

keep participants having fun. The young golfers learn a lot too. Many had no prior golf experience but now look like semi-pros out on the course. Some have even achieved birdies — an impressive feat even for professional golfers. Most PGA Jr. League teams compete regionally for the chance to make it to the U.S. Championship game but, with no U.S. teams nearby, Yokota Golf has teamed up with PGA Jr. League of Japan to play against local Japanese teams. Kids, parents and

coaches alike speak highly of the matches as the young athletes learn sportsmanship and teamwork while increasing their cultural awareness — not to mention the technical instructions they receive from PGA pros. Although the aspiring golfers play competitively, the atmosphere is similar to a friendly scrimmage as they high five and clap for their competitor’s success.

NOH PERFORMANCE “Sumidagawa” — Sound of Prayer Cradled in Sorrow

Photo: Yutaka Ishida

Sign-up starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 5 January at ITT.

Experience the traditional Japanese Noh theater. Performances originate from the 14th century and typically include music, dance and drama. Plots draw from legend, history, literature and contemporary events.

227-7083 • Bldg. 327 Visit YokotaFSS.com/ITT for more information.

The play begins once the ornately dressed actors walk from a connecting bridge to the modest, square stage. During the show, pay close attention to the performers’ slow movements, poetic language and calm tone. Sumidagawa tells the story of a mother’s search for her son after his kidnapping by slave traders. When the mother happens upon her son’s grave, she recites “Nembutsu” — a Japanese Buddhist prayer chant. During her chant, the son appears in ghost form. The mother tries to embrace him but with dawn, he disappears. Join ITT to enjoy this classic story about a mother’s love for her child.

AERO CLUB & FLIGHT TRAINING CENTER

WINGS PILOT PROFICIENCY PROGRAM The objectives of WINGS training is to assess pilot knowledge, judgment and skill in critical flight and ground tasks; and to improve pilot performance in risk management, planning and execution of general aviation flight operations.

225-8988 • Bldg. 4304

FLIGHT SAFETY MEETING Sat • 12 Jan • 9 a.m. Kobayashi Room, Enlisted Club Join us for a local General Aviation flight safety discussion group.

WINGS Flight Activities include both ground and flight elements that are accomplished as a proficiency training event — not as a test. Instructors are expected to provide the evaluation and training necessary to ensure airmen are proficient in each element of WINGS activities. At the beginning of any WINGS activity, instructors should evaluate the experience, currency and routine flying practices of the pilot and develop a suitable plan to achieve the activity objectives.

REDBIRD FMX/CL FULL MOTION FLIGHT SIMULATOR $95/Hour Feel the sensation of flying without ever leaving the ground. Come try our new Redbird FMX fullmotion platform flight simulator. Strap yourself into the fully enclosed cockpit surrounded by wrap-around visuals as you take the controls and fly in and out of Yokota or anywhere in the world. Experience the astonishing realism of the latest in advanced flight-simulator technology used to train pilots around the world.

THE ONLY WAY TO SEE TOKYO $165 • By Appointment* Want to see the bright lights of Tokyo from the sky? We can show you the big city in an hour long, piloted flight. Three passenger maximum. Weight restrictions may apply. *Tour flights must be scheduled in person at least 24 hours in advance and payment is due at time of scheduling.

FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA) WRITTEN EXAMINATIONS Free • By Appointment Yokota Flight Training Center is offering FAA/ Joint Service Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification Council testing for those who are eligible.

LIFE & LEISURE

AERO CLUB/FLIGHT TRAINING CENTER (FTC)

Aviation instructors are the key to aviation safety. Flight instructors are the general aviation safety gate keepers. When aviation instructors emphasize safe practices in aviation, it tends to have a long-lasting effect on students. A WINGS instructor should be a role model who sets high expectations in regards to safety. They should instruct beyond the minimum standard and set the example in aeronautical decision making, starting at the before-flight briefing and following through to the debriefing.

Nagano Jigokudani Monkey Park

Tours Available in Jan & Feb Join ITT to observe the lifestyle of wild Japanese macaques, or snow monkeys, at Jigokudani Monkey Park. Established in 1964, the park is located in the valley of Shiga Kogen — an area known for its snowy climate. The monkeys at Jigokundani are often caught attempting to escape the cold by relaxing in natural hot springs. Interact with the monkeys as they play and dip in the warm baths. A truly unique experience you don’t want to miss.
