Youth & Teen
Volunteer of the Month
Staff Sgt. Manny Padilla Staff Sgt. Manny Padilla has been selected as the Youth & Teen volunteer of the month for the outstanding and amazing job he has been doing over the past few months. During the day, Padilla works as an Aeronautical Maintenance Crew Chief for the C-17 with the 730 AMS. His duties include launching, recovering and maintaining aircraft. The same commitment, devotion and enthusiasm he infuses into his day-to-day work, he also clearly demonstrates the same passion and drive for his volunteer work. For the past six months, Padilla has been a faithful volunteer at Yokota’s Youth & Teen Center, enthusiastically devoting his time at least once a week and helping out in any way possible. From assisting Youth Center with setting up their 3D printer to providing food at events and mentoring youth; Padilla is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of Yokota’s Youth.
6
horizons January 2018
Recently, he brought a few co-workers with him to the Youth Center to teach kids about electronics, engineering and science through fun experiments via the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) program. “It’s amazing to watch kids absorb knowledge, they’re just like sponges - learning everything we teach them from aerodynamics to hydraulics,” Padilla said. In addition to mentoring, he recently donated his own aquarium tank set, including a variety of fish, rocks and plants for the children to enjoy each and every day. He goes in regularly to maintain the tank and during that time he talks to the kids about the different types of fish. “The aquarium is an ongoing project with them, it allows the kids to ask questions and learn all about the exciting world of aquatics,” Padilla said. “I love getting to
share a passion of mine with them and to see them acquire knowledge.” A Hawaii native, Padilla has always loved fish, but became especially interested in aquatics while stationed in Guam for four years. “I would dive in the ocean, scoop up fish on my own and then keep the fish in a tank at home. One of my very favorite fish is the Humuhumu Triggerfish, also know as the Picassco Triggerfish because of it’s unique, almost painted appearance.” The 374 FSS would like to thank you for hard-work, dedication, gift of time and generous support to improve and revamp the Youth Center for our children. Everything you do is more than appreciated!

Tips For
With the new year comes reflection and the opportunity to grow and arise anew. This time ignites a fire in many to set out and accomplish goals and aspirations, but often times it quickly fizzles out as we get bogged down with life’s challenges. Here are some tips from 374 FSS on how you can overcome these obstacles and attain and reach your ambitions throughout the year.
Healthy Living
All Year Long
Move More Make it fun. Don’t limit yourself to home and the gym. Over time, this can become monotonous which can make it difficult for you to consistently exercise all year long. Instead, add an element of excitement to your workout. Climb Mount Fuji or go snowboarding with Outdoor Recreation, get your heart rate up while exploring the land of the rising sun via Information, Tickets & Travel (ITT), or take up a fun aerobics class with a friend such as Latininspired Zumba or intense Turbo Kick. Additionally, Natatorium, Taiyo Community Center and Youth Programs all offer a variety of exciting classes for the entire family to enjoy including karate, Jiu Jitsu, water aerobics, ballet, gymnastics and more. Youth & Teen Center also offers opportunities for kids to play team sports throughout the year. See pages 29-31 for more information regarding instructional classes.
Keep track of your exercise. Make a note of your physical activity in a date book or calendar. Mark the days that you exercise and frequently update as a reminder and motivator. Set a weekly goal for activity. Know your limits and make your goals attainable. Setting weekly goals gives you more day-to-day flexibility whereas setting daily goals might get you discouraged if you miss a day. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you do miss a day or even a few-things come up, life happens, just be sure to get back on track. Work activity into your day. 10 percent of something is better than 100 percent of nothing. So even if you have only 10 minutes, it’s better than zero minutes. Take a 10-minute walk before lunch or walk up and down the stairs when you’re feeling drained and tired.
EAT RIGHT PLAN YOUR MEALS AHEAD. Curb unhealthy eating choices and nip bad habits in the bud by planning and preparing your meals each week. Begin by writing out a plan that works for you and your family. Stock your pantry with a variety of healthy foods and bring healthy snacks while on the go so you’re not tempted to indulge in reckless eating. Whenever possible, cook meals in advanced (enough for at least two days) and portion meals and snacks out in Tupperware and plastic baggies. This helps with tackling two issues – portion control and avoiding eating foods that lack essential nutrients. SLOW DOWN AND SAVOR YOUR FOOD. Try not to multitask while eating – put down your phone, turn off the TV and put away work. Distractions like these can lead to overeating which in turn may affect your health negatively over time. Take the time to sit down and really enjoy your food. KEEP YOUR PLATE COLORFUL. Cover the rainbow of fruit and vegetable colors to get a good mix of nutrients. If you’re not getting the rainbow, you’re probably not getting all of the essential nutrients you need in your daily diet. From spinach, peppers and avocados to pineapples, bananas and strawberries; these foods not only brighten your plate, but they will also boost your health when consistently consumed. Learn more about how to plan, prepare, cook and have fun in the kitchen with the help of Taiyo’s Chef Hannah. See page 22 for more information regarding Chef Hannah’s free cooking classes.
SLEEP BETTER AVOID TV AND COMPUTER ONE HOUR BEFORE BEDTIME. Electronics stimulate your brain which ultimately keeps you awake. The light emitted from these devices cue your brain into thinking that it’s time to be awake. Instead, take this time to distress with a hot, relaxing bath, meditate with some soothing zen-like music or read with a dimly lit lamp. NO HEAVY EXERCISE CLOSE TO BEDTIME. Light stretching and calming yoga is fine and may even help you release stress at the end of the day, however, vigorous activity will heat up your body’s core temperature making it harder to sleep.
MANAGE YOUR STRESS KEEP A GRATITUDE JOURNAL. It can be difficult when you aren’t where you want to be in life or who you want to be, but taking the time to appreciate positive people and events can help alleviate some stress and bring things into perspective. BREATHE. When life gets to be too stressful, take a moment to just breathe. Deep breathing can calm your heart rate and bring you back to a place of peace. Practicing yoga or meditation can center your mind and bring balance to your daily life. Start with some simple moves like downward dog or child’s pose at home or try out family, baby or power yoga at the Natatorium. Taiyo also offers a yoga class every Saturday geared specifically towards women and their bodies. See pages 29-31 for details regarding yoga classes and more.
SET A REGULAR SLEEP SCHEDULE. Make a bedtime routine and try to get settled for sleep around the same time every night and wake up the same time everyday. This will allow your body to regulate and give you the rest you need to function during the day. Skip the snooze button because it will only lead to more grogginess. Push through the urge to continue sleeping for an extra five or ten minutes and over time you will feel more energized in the morning. DON’T COUNT ON WEEKEND CATCH-UP SLEEP. If you have an irregular sleep schedule, attempting to give your body the rest it needs on the weekend will not make up for the sleep you lost during the week. However, if you generally sleep well and have a rough week, go ahead and sleep in on the weekend.
WINTER DESTINATION:
SHIRAKAWA-GO Cultural Connection BY: TAYLOR STEWART
Shirakawa-go lies at the foot of Mount Haku-san in Gifu prefecture. Lush mountainous forest makes up 96 percent of the area with the remaining four percent designated as cultivated land. The village is quiet and idyllic, especially in the winter – perfect for a mini getaway. From December to March, snow blankets the town’s famous gassho-zukuri farmhouses which feature characteristic thatched roofs that form a breathtaking winter landscape. The unique architectural style was developed to withstand heavy snowfall, and the roofs are said to resemble hands pressed together in prayer. They are a testament to the ingenuity of generations past – no nails or metal were used to construct these houses. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, Shirakawa-go retains rustic charm while still offering dozens of touristfriendly attractions, restaurants and accommodations. Shirakawa-go’s largest village, Ogimachi, holds illumination events on select Monday and Sunday nights (typically 5:30-7:30 p.m.) in January and February. There are shuttle buses that take sightseers to Shiroyama Viewpoint, from which an illuminated Ogimachi is evocative of a scene out of a fairytale – but make sure to sport appropriate shoes and a waterproof coat! At night, temperatures fall far below freezing and rain is common. However, don’t let the freezing temperatures stop you from missing out on this amazing winter utopia. Shirakawa-go is replete with places to warm up and indulge in the likes of Hida beef croquettes, soba and udon noodles and mountain veggies. While many of the gassho-zukuri farmhouses are restaurants, more than a dozen in Ogimachi function as lodges. An overnight stay costs around ¥8,000 to ¥9,000 per person including breakfast and dinner, which is quite the bargain for an opportunity to immerse oneself in local culture. Keeping with traditional style, guest rooms are complete with an irori (open fireplace for heating and cooking), tatami flooring and a table. You Just Don’t Understand Me!
Wed • 10 Jan 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. • A&FRC Men and women often receive messages in an erroneous way due to misunderstandings caused by meta-messages. Words and actions of those closest to us often have two meanings - the message and the meta-message. Words and actions that are meant to be caring are often taken as criticism and can be seen as having double meanings. Join the Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC) team for an informal “Lunch and Learn” to understand the concept of meta-messages and the harm they can cause in a relationship. The interactive discussion will include helpful tips to avoid meta-messaging through a more direct, sincere, and honest style of communication. Don’t forget to bring your lunch! Call A&FRC to register.

UPCOMING AVIONICS UPGRADE The Primary Flight Display (PFD) is an instrument which integrates and depicts, on a single display, all of the information that was historically presented on a number of individual electromechanical instruments. The modern PFD displays virtually all of the information that the pilot requires to determine basic flight parameters (altitude, attitude, airspeed, rate of climb, heading, etc). Depending upon the phase of flight and pilot selections, the PFD will provide appropriate lateral guidance to maintain the selected track, heading or approach and missed approach track and vertical guidance for climb and descent, level off, approach and missed approach. This greatly reduces pilot workload while in manual flight and facilitates flight monitoring with all required information is displayed on a single instrument. Draft look at the Yokota Flight Training Center’s new avionics instrument upgrade
