Savor Your Summer

July Travel Destinations by Taylor Stewart Shiraito Falls in Fujinomiya

4 Jul*

Japan is often equated to endless cityscapes and bustle. While an urban setting might prove perfect for an outing in cooler climates, ITT presents an opportunity to enjoy the country’s natural attractions at their most lush. At the foothills of Fuji are Shiraito Falls which are nearly 500 feet wide and more than 50 feet tall. With snow melt from Fuji and beautiful greenery, Shiraito Falls are best enjoyed in the summer months and certainly live up to their name (shiroi ito means white thread). Travelers get to enjoy another Fujinomiya marvel, the Subaru Line 5th Station, which lies halfway up the mountain some 7,500 feet above sea level. The scenic Subaru Station accommodates to those averse to mountain climbing and offers a view of the five famous lakes below. Behind a cluster of shops and parking lots is Komitake Shrine, which presents another panorama of the mountain base. If you prefer short strolls over the more daunting undertaking above 5th Station, Ochudo Trail boasts beautiful pine trees and no serious inclines.

Mt. Fuji lava caves

Later in July, ITT brings you another natural marvel at a much lower elevation. Within the Five Lakes region at Fuji’s northern base, there are a number of caves open to tourists. Although the caves — which were formed by past volcanic activity — have some cramped spaces and steep steps, they do not require special equipment or escorts to navigate. Bat Cave — only sparsely populated by its namesake creatures — is nearly 1,200 feet long and features stalactite and lava rock formations. It is also refreshingly cool in the summer. Ice Cave is even cooler as summer temperatures usually fall below freezing. In keeping with its name, it contains a number of obstinate ice pillars. Similarly, Wind Cave stays at a brisk 32 degrees Fahrenheit all

28 Jul*

year, but is more tame in function and form than its sister caves. It has been traditionally used to store acorns and house silkworm cocoons. Travelers to Fujinomiya will find their dread for the dog days defeated as its caves and high-elevation sites grow chilly even in the middle of July, necessitating layers and waterproof jackets for non-climbers as well. The chill starkly contrasts with Japan’s characteristic humidity and heat and only enhances the beauty of the Fuji region.

*Dates are subject to change.

Tokyo Waterfront & Asakusa Temple — 15 Jul* Asakusa — home of the famous Kaminarimon Gate to Sensoji Temple — is a tourist staple. Luckily, travelers do not have to travel far to enjoy the imposing lacquered gate and its characteristic lantern. Once a detached palace for the shogun, Hamarikyu Gardens has an equally grand air and rich history. The trip ends on a more modern note with a visit to Palette Town, Odaiba, which features a shopping center, technology showcase, casino and Ferris wheel.

Kumagaya Fan Festival or Uchiwa Matsuri — 21 & 22 Jul* Uchiwa Matsuri — a summer highlight in Saitama Prefecture — is said to be one of the best Japanese festivals. The Junko parade festival features illuminated floats and festival cars proceeding to traditional ohayashi drum rhythms. The next day is considered to be the festival’s climax and includes a drumming match. The parade culminates with a return to the main shrine.

YO S H I DA

F I R E F E S T I V A L TOUR DATE:

Sun • 26 Aug Cultural Connection BY TAYLOR STEWART

After becoming pregnant in one night, Goddess Konohanasakuya-hime’s husband accused her of having an earthly affair. In an attempt to prove her innocence, she arranged to give birth in a fire. If the babies belonged to her husband, who was also a deity, they would survive. Sure enough, she had three divine babies unharmed by the fire. This Shinto legend developed into one of Japan’s most exciting summer festivals. Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine is a shrine dedicated to the Shinto goddess of Fuji and all volcanoes. A main hall, dancing stage and dense forest constitute Sengen Shrine and contribute to the natural beauty and cultural richness of Yamanashi Prefecture. Built in 1615, it was a staple site of worship for the Fuji goddess during the Edo period. For avid hikers that want to start at Fuji’s base, Sengen Shrine serves as a starting point for the long Mount Fuji trek. For festival-goers, it serves as a starting point for the Hinamatsuri procession.

Every year on August 26th — in an attempt to please the deity and prevent volcanic eruption for another year — this shrine becomes the departure point for a procession of portable pampas-grass structures. This event is known as Yoshida no Hinamatsuri, or Yoshida Fire Festival, and is most famous for its proximity to Mount Fuji. The grass shrines, or mikoshi, and torches are set on fire on Fujiyoshida’s main street. Much to the delight of onlookers, these fires represent those the goddess set while trying to prove her fidelity. Her soul is supposedly transported around the city in the mikoshi. The observation must be followed to a tee so as not to anger her. The festival is meant to both appease the deity and mark the end of climbing season.
