tue • 3 J ul • 1-10 p .m. Samura i Tr a in in g G r oun ds By: Taylor Stewart

Every year, the 374th Force Support Squadron organizes an annual Independence Day celebration which hosts a plethora of activities and entertainment. Thousands of people gather on Samurai Training Grounds to compete in a multitude of contests, eat delicious food, and for the chance to win big prizes! This year, Independence Day kicks off early with the Firecracker 5k fun run at Yokota Field. For non-runners who still crave a challenge, Celebrate America offers Goofy Golf competition at Par 3 (golfers use tennis balls instead of golf balls!) and the Leaky Kon-Tiki contest at the Natatorium, which encourages families to build cardboard rafts both practical and stylish with the ultimate goal of making it to the finish line first.

Yokota residents whose talents are in the kitchen are encouraged to compete in the Cookie Contest. Celebrants can also flaunt their classic or sports cars at the car show or demonstrate their volleyball or dodgeball skills at the Samurai Fitness Center. Prizes are awarded for the top three contestants of each competition. Celebrate America proves just as fun for kids as it does for adults – featuring an inflatable zip line, bouncy castles, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painters and caricaturists. Don’t forget to take an adorable photo-op with Japanese mascots roaming throughout the festival. The entertainment lineup caters to music lovers and athletes alike: the PACAF band, local musicians and Taiko drummers share the stage with a Zumba demonstration, gymnastics performance and samurai-ninja

show. There will also be an awe-inspiring BMX board demonstration. In addition to a plethora of entertainment and activities, festival-goers can also choose from a multitude of delicious American and Japanese cuisine ranging from barbecue and hot dogs to kebabs and curry! Not only is Fourth of July rife with activities, but giveaways include a whopping $500 cash prize and a pair of round-trip plane tickets to anywhere back stateside. Giveaway winners and victors of the daytime competitions will be announced at 6 p.m., followed by performances from rock bands Vertical Horizon and FUEL. The Independence Day celebration will end with fireworks bursting in the air, magically lighting the night sky for everyone to enjoy.

KUMAGAYA NIGHT FESTIVAL K U M A G AYA U C H I WA M AT S U R I

TOUR DATE: S u n • 2 2 Ju l Cultural Connection

Kumagaya Uchiwa Matsuri is held in Kumagaya city, located in the northern part of Saitama Prefecture. This festival is hosted by Yasaka Shrine to ward off ailments and pray for good harvest and prosperous business. Every year, the festival takes place for three days during the third week of July. During this time, people gather from all over Japan to join in on the festivities. Throughout Japan, matsuri, or festivals, are very popular during the summertime. Kumagaya is among the many cities that hosts several matsuri’s all summer long. One of the most prominent matsuri, Kumagaya Uchiwa, is known for its Uchiwa fans which are flat and are made of paper and bamboo or plastic and wood. These delicate handmade fans are distributed throughout the festival to keep

festival-goers cool in the hot and humid summer heat. This tradition originated in the nineteenth century when local shops would hand out Uchiwa fans to hot passersby. Kumagaya Uchiwa Matsuri is one of the most famous festivals in the Kanto region with a dynamic procession of floats and festival music. This dazzling parade features twelve exquisitely decorated floats moving to the sound of flutes, drums and small gongs. One of these floats displays young men drumming in unison, also known as tatakiai. On the third night of the festival, the streets are lined with food stands and musical accompaniment reaches its peak as the floats come together at the festival square. Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime event!

GENERAL AVIATION JOINT STEERING COMMITTEE (GAJSC) SAFETY ENHANCEMENT TOPIC:

ENHANCED VISION SYSTEMS

The General Aviation Joint Steering Committee (GAJSC) believes Enhanced and Synthetic Vision technology can significantly improve general aviation utility and reduce the chance of accidents during night and IMC operations. We’ll take a look at available technologies and GA options. TYPES OF ENHANCED VISION SYSTEMS Our five senses (vision, hearing, taste, smell and touch) are key to keeping us safe. Vision is especially important to a pilot. Vision at night and in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) can be improved with technology, namely, Enhanced Vision (EV) and Synthetic Vision (SV) technology. LIFE & LEISURE

Enhanced Vision (EV) uses sensors on your airplane to provide a better view. These sensors can be infrared or radar. They are very useful in seeing terrain in weather, or on a dark night. The sensors help you see what is actually in front of the aircraft. Synthetic Vision (SV) doesn’t use sensors. Instead, it relies on GPS information and a database to create a virtual landscape. SV can create a picture of the flight environment and overlay that picture with aircraft instrumentation. The result is a single image that contains the information you need for safe flight operations. Since this information is not based on direct observation, you’ll need to keep your software and databases up to date. DISPLAY CHOICES Most GA systems are displayed through a cockpit Multifunction Display (MFD), or a Primary Flight Display (PFD). A Head Up display (HUD) is a great way of displaying EV/SV information, but it’s very expensive. Regardless of which display you choose, be sure to become very familiar with it before you use it in real time. It’s a good idea to schedule periodic proficiency training with a CFI who knows the equipment. These training and review sessions will give you the confidence you need to use the equipment effectively. You can learn more about Enhanced Vision Systems in this GA Safety Enhancement fact sheet. https://www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing/2018/ media/SE_Topic_18-01.pdf
