Fostering Hope F a m i ly P e r s e v e r e s i n t h e wa k e o f A dv e r s i t y

The Crusses are unconventional, to say the least, but what sets them apart from the traditional nuclear family has only brought them closer together. They started their lives as a unit later than most, and by virtue of the delay – and its inevitable hardship – they deeply value their present bond. Rebecca Crusse and her children are a testament to both the flexibility and closeness that defines family.

Growing up, Autum, 13, and July, 15, lived in an unstable environment where their mother was unable to care for them – which eventually landed them in foster care. For some time, they felt aimless, until their aunt Rebecca Crusse took matters into her own hands and began fostering them which led to adoption a couple years later.

Prior to Autum and July joining their clan, it had been four years since the Crusse family had a full house – with Rebecca’s two daughters out of the house, it was just her and her then fourteen-year-old son Mak. When it came time for the family to infuse as one, the transition was challenging and involved plenty of growing pains. “The changeover was rough, it was rocky. It had been a long time since Mak and I had been around Autum and July, so it was just them learning us, us learning them and having to adjust. We all had to adapt,” Rebecca said. horizons

6 While the family – like any other – still has May 2018

occasional spats, they have grown to adore spending time together and seek support in each other. Essentially, they have built unconditional familial love from scratch. “I finally feel at home. I have a family that truly loves and cares for one other,” Autum said of growing as a family.

was in the military and I didn’t have a care in the world. But after children, it changed me. I couldn’t be selfish anymore, I have a family that depends on me, especially now with bringing my niece and nephew into the family. I want to give them a childhood they deserve.”

With a maternal fondness, Rebecca referred to her kids by their nicknames: bookworm, daredevil, Casanova. Each are unique in personality and passion, bringing a different dimension to the family dynamic. “Autum is my book worm, I never have to worry about her or her grades. July keeps me on my toes which makes for never having a dull day. Mak is a very kind and affectionate kid – he has a heart of gold and always goes above and beyond,” Rebecca recounted lovingly.

This emphasis on selflessness has been the driving force in her life regardless of obstacles she has faced, culminating into her position now as a Child & Youth Programs director. Every day she strives to reach new feats – believing that the sky is the limit. “I love being a part of the Force Support Squadron (FSS) and would love to learn more about each aspect so that one day I could be the FSS director,” said Rebecca.

Her experiences, even those that preceded parenthood, have equipped her to be a mother and facilitate this dynamic. While in the military, Rebecca was a Petty Officer First Class Aviation Ordinance Man, diversifying a predominantly male career field. “Being in the Navy shaped me to be who I am today – my attention to detail, my passion and my drive. It pushed me to give my all in everything that I do,” Rebecca said.

Crusse inspires her children to also have a perseverant outlook on life – who all aspire to greatness. “Through these years, seeing her achieve her goals makes me want to push past any obstacles that come my way. I’ve been told that I’ll never make it as a Navy Seal, but I’m going to do what she did and prove them wrong. She inspires me to keep going no matter what the challenge,” Mak shared.

While her tenure in the armed forces has enhanced her character today, she cited some of the fundamental attitudinal changes that also accompanied raising a family post-military: “I

In the wake of adversity, this family like all families in the military not only thrives – it flourishes. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the wonderful mom’s of Yokota!

A BGCA rt Finalists Last year, thousands of hopeful students from all over the United States entered their artwork to Boys & Girls Club of America’s (BGCA) prestigious National Fine Arts contest. Locally, children from both School Age Care and Youth Center submitted over 200 pieces of unique art ranging from drawings and paintings to sculptures and photography. Of those submissions, 20 were selected to compete at the regional level and five advanced to nationals. Amongst BGCA’s national finalist is twelve-year-old Eden Reed of the Youth Center. Engrained within her – art plays a vital role in her life and has shaped her into the person she is today. “Art is a part of who I am. Art pushes me beyond my comfort zone and forces me to think outside of the box. My favorite part about the creative process is seeing the finished product. To me, art is anything you create,” Reed expressed. Reed’s artwork was inspired by the beauty of the world around her, “The earth is such a beautiful thing, I couldn’t possibly replicate its magnificence, but I wanted to portray my own perspective, my own impression,” Reed said. The BGCA encourages youth from all over to express themselves through a variety of art including

drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media and sculpture. These unique artworks are first put on display at both local and regional exhibits for the community to enjoy. From here, a panel of distinguished judges select artworks to be presented at the National Fine Arts Exhibit. Being selected to have her art potentially exhibited on a national-level is motivation for Reed. “I have always tried to put to paper what was in my mind, but could never do it until this piece. Advancing to nationals is a great feat for me, it’s validation that I’m growing as an artist and pushes me to want to do even better,” Reed said. Outside of creating masterpieces, Reed is passionate about running and is heavily involved in Yokota’s Youth Sports Program – playing softball, basketball, track, soccer, gymnastics and adding volleyball to the roster this year. With all of her talents and ambitions, she has a bright future ahead of her! 374 FSS supports children’s creativity and we congratulate all of Yokota’s regional winners and national finalists!

The BGCA empowers youth by providing programs which allow for individual growth through youth sports, health and wellness, education and arts. The summer scene at Nagano Jigokudani monkey park is quite different than that of the winter months. The trees are full of green leaves, which shade the hot sun, and vegetation covers most of the ground. During summer, monkeys migrate closer to the park for a place to hide and rest. There are also wild berries, flowers and insects for them to eat. This is a monumental time for babies that were born in the early spring to make their first appearance.

During this time, you will be able to see mothers with their babies, who are clenched tight to their mother’s bodies, sunbathing, eating grass and grains out in the open. After the monkey park, we will stop by Shinshu Fruits Land for some cherry picking with all-you-can-eat cherries for 30 minutes. If you like ice cream, be sure to try their seasonal fruit ice cream in different flavors.
