Scholarship Awarded to Aspiring Pilots Colonel Kenneth Moss couldn’t help but jump in the conversation when he heard Airman First Class Margaret Zamora discussing her dream of becoming a pilot. She’d looked into getting her private pilot’s license, but found the pricey instruction prohibitive. Colonel Moss contemplated the situation for a moment before turning to Zamora: “Let me see what we can do about that.” A1C Zamora and four other airmen — Airman First Class Nathaniel Rainey Springer, Senior Airman Jillian McCabe, Staff Sergeant Kevin Duarte and Senior Airman Geraldine Schwartz — are now the inaugural recipients of the Basic Qualification Training and Mission Qualification Training Familiarization Scholarship. The award reduces the cost of introductory instruction from thousands of dollars to only $200. This scholarship is unique to Yokota Air Base, made possible via the state-of-the-art training and resources available at Yokota FSS’s Aero Club and Flight Training Center.
Airmen across the globe have echoed the same sentiment as Zamora; it’s not for lack of want that in the next five years the global aeronautic industry — and the U.S. Air Force — will face a crippling pilot shortage. As the Wing sees it, establishing this scholarship is not only an investment in the careers of young airmen, but an investment in the future of the U.S. Air Force. The scholarship offers aspiring pilots the initial training required to qualify for the Air Force remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) or aircraft training programs. The training prepares students with little-to-no piloting experience via a comprehensive and hands-on approach. The first phase of pilot training, known as ground school, involves interactive, online videos that provide detailed information on the ins and outs of flying. Students then apply the skills they learn in ground school to flying in the Aero Club’s Redbird FMX Simulator. The “sim” allows pilots-in-training to fly anywhere in the world, all from the safety
of the ground. The controls and images are so realistic you forget you’re not in a real plane. Most pilots agree the sim is more difficult to fly than an actual plane due to its authentic yet highly sensitive controls. If you can fly the simulator, you can fly a plane. Obtaining a pilot’s license requires dedication and perseverance, especially for these airmen as they balance their daily active duty commitments with their off-hours pilot training. Students must accumulate 10 flying hours in the simulator, not to mention the countless hours they’ll spend studying to prepare for the exam. For these young airmen, living out their dream of becoming a pilot makes the long hours worth it. Some may cross train to become RPA pilots, while others hope to commission and fly aircraft. The 374 AW expects to continue the program and welcome in a new class of scholarship recipients in 2019 — the next generation of airmen that will keep the U.S. Air Force in flight.
The Yokota Aero Club and Flight Training Center offers airplane rentals, pilot training, scenic tours and more. For more information, call 225-8988 or visit YokotaFSS.com/AeroClub.

Spend your Thanksgiving in Hiroshima. Visit the historical city’s two World Heritage Sites: the A-Bomb Dome and Itsukushima Shrine. Stand before the battered A-Bomb Dome which miraculously survived the bombing of Hiroshima. Originally built as a commercial exhibition hall within a bustling area of the city, the once lively building is now markedly quiet — a memorial to those who lost their lives. The nearby stream and peaceful atmosphere call for a time of reflection and remembrance.
Take a pleasant ferry ride to Miyajima and explore the sacred island. The numerous shrines and wild deer scattered throughout the island defend the local saying that Miyajima is “the body of God.” Miyajima is best known for Itsukushima Shrine — the only Japanese shrine built on water. Its beautiful, vermillion-lacquered torii gate seems to float on the sea. ITT’s Hiroshima tour includes roundtrip airfare, bus transportation to and from Haneda, two-night accommodation (breakfasts included) and sightseeing to Hiroshima Castle, Miyajima Island, Kintaikyo Bridge, Iwakuni Castle, Hiroshima Memorial Park & Museum and more.

Chelsea Klusewitz
COMMUNITY CENTERS
CANVAS & COCKTAILS AND CANVAS AT CHILI’S PAINTING INSTRUCTOR The Arts & Crafts Center recently welcomed Chelsea Klusewitz to the community. Whether you are painting in graphite outlines, watercolor, charcoal or acrylic, she is here to help unlock your artistic potential. Chelsea prefers to focus on figurative art and natural elements and often incorporates the two mediums in her own artwork. Her art has a sophisticated feng shui indicative of works by Michael Parkes and Patrick Palmer, who incidentally were tremendous influences on Chelsea during her time at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Her artwork is often inspired by animals and nature and her use of bright colors and Art Nouveau style are a blend of fantasy, abstract and surrealism. Klusewitz’s positive and upbeat vibe makes her an ideal teacher for anyone who desires to express their inner spirit through brush strokes and dabbed colors. Participants of Canvas at Chili’s and Canvas & Cocktails classes will develop their own unique style while enjoying an evening with like-minded artists, good food and conversation. Chelsea explained, “I hope to give that passion and emotion I have for art — something which moves or inspires you to make a visual record.” Chelsea holds a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts and arrived in Japan five months ago from Baltimore, Maryland.

This past July, Joey attended the Air Force Beach Teen Leadership Summit at Jekyll Island, Georgia. Joey was chosen amongst applicants to attend one of the camps offered every summer to Air Force dependents. Campers unplug during their weeklong stay to learn leadership skills and forge friendships over campfires. Joey studied the unique
characteristics and responsibilities of a leader and engaged in team-building activities and profound discussions. He highly recommends that teens take advantage of such camps. He explained, “It helped me grow as a person and as a leader, refreshing my mind with ideas and intentions for the future.”
