Summer’s end is nearly synonymous with Friendship Festival, a bustling, two-day event that takes place every September and consistently delights over 100,000 celebrants. Friendship Festival serves not only as a marker for season’s close, but also as a symbol of the JapaneseAmerican relationship. The flight line unwinds as our Japanese neighbors flood the airfield early to beat the lines. Unity is visible as airmen give high-fives to gaping children and celebrants overcome language barriers to forge new friendships. There’s tons to do, regardless of age or nationality. Take a seat in aircrafts, get up close to firetrucks and suit up in military gear. Onlookers awe over military dog demonstrations, and children revel at the mere sight of bounce castles. The flight line even hosts a Strongman Competition, in which both on- and off-base participants test their strength with herculean weight-lifting challenges. Browse the diverse food and shopping options. Treat yourself to fare that ranges from American
carnival classics, like turkey legs and funnel cake, to Japanese street eats, like yakitori and yakisoba. Base organizations, including Yokota High School parents and our American Red Cross chapter, offer merchandise to Festival-goers. Enjoy a diverse lineup of entertainers in the span of two days. Base natives like the PACAF Band, Yokota Dance Company and taiko drummer groups have long established themselves as Festival regulars. Sharing the stage are Japanese bands, covering genres from soul to folk to metal; the group Crack Uppers are masters of the Englishlanguage power ballad, while Empty Black Box play J-rock. Other off-base entertainers include the Hawaiian dance troupe Halau ‘O Kai Maino and traditional Tanabata dancers. Stick around for fireworks, which wrap up both nights with a bang and commemorate another year of the strengthening Japan and U.S. alliance.

TOUR DATE: Sat • 20 Oct Cultural Connection
Experience the traditional kurazukuri architecture in the historic city of Kawagoe. It’s easy to imagine traveling back in time as you walk past tiled roof buildings made of clay walls adorned with painted wooden signs. At the two-day, 360-year-old Kawagoe Festival, marvel at the 21 spectacular floats, or “dashi,” that parade around the center of Kurazukuri Street. Stare in awe at the two-story high floats that are meticulously hand carved, painted and draped in beautifully embroidered tapestry. Each float transports a life-like crafted doll and a troupe of five to six live performers. A team of 100 to 200 volunteers move the house-sized structures with massive industrial-strength pulling hand-braided ropes, chanting loudly as they motivate each other to power through the streets. Witness Hikkawase, where two floats meet at an intersection and engage in friendly competition. Traditional Japanese-style music comprised of flutes, drums, hand bells and a theatrical dancer further energize the faceoff. Visit ITT today and reserve your seat for this unique cultural experience.
