Last summer, my husband and I decided to climb Mount Fuji for the second time. We had done it the year before, and like most people, we started our climb from Fifth Station. This time around though we wanted to try something a little different and start our climb from the true base of Mount Fuji at Station Zero. Our goal was to begin our hike in the afternoon and continue climbing overnight with the hope of reaching the summit in time to watch the sunrise on my birthday. Unfortunately, a typhoon hit and by the time we made it to Fifth Station, the wind gusts were blowing us around and we could hardly stand. Thankfully, we were able to find a mountain hut to duck into, and it was there we learned climbers were being advised to not go any further because of the dangerous weather conditions. Since we hadn’t planned on stopping overnight, we didn’t have a reservation at the mountain hut, but luckily they had space for us.

Yokota’s seasoned Mo share their stories and o ready to hike Japan’s A few hours and several checks of the weather later, we realized it was no longer possible to make it to the summit by sunrise for my birthday. So instead, we bought sake, sat in the mountain hut with some other climbers and toasted to our great adventure. The next morning, the mountain hut staff had caught on that it was my birthday and gave me a birthday hat, banana and cake. The winds calmed down and the angry clouds transformed into blue skies and sunshine around 9:30 a.m., so we said our goodbyes and headed out. While this was originally supposed to be a one-day hike for us, Mother Nature had plans of her own and turned it into a two-day hike instead. On the bright side, while things didn’t go quite as we planned, we eventually made it to the summit later that day, and in the process met so many wonderful, kind people and had the best time. And anyways, isn’t that what makes for the best stories and memories? -Lori Jansons

Climbing Mount Fuji was one of the most iconic accomplishments we have done together while in Japan and it will be one of the fondest memories that we will never forget. Being on the top of the mountain was simply unreal. It was physically challenging, but we were happy that we made it together. Following the Outdoor Recreation guidelines helps a lot, especially if you have never climbed a mountain as high as Mount Fuji before. The hiking equipment Outdoor Recreation recommends was also extremely helpful for us in successfully climbing Mount Fuji. -Mai & Daryl Thomas

Travel to the southwest foothills of Mount Fuji to experience the breathtaking Shiraito Falls. The 490-foot-wide and 60-foot-high cascade of water is fed by Mount Fuji’s snow melt. “Shiraito” literally translates to “white threads” — a fitting description for one of Mount Fuji’s most beautiful waterfalls. The green, lush plants add to the waterfall’s beauty. The base of the waterfall is easily accessible from the parking lot via a well-maintained walking path. During your stroll, mill through the souvenir shops and food vendors that line the

walkway and get a sneak peek of what’s to come as you spot the Otodome Falls — a thundering 80-foot-high fall. Hop back on the bus for a scenic drive through Mount Fuji’s Subaru Line to reach Fifth Station. Most Fuji hikers start their climbing journey here, but you don’t have to be an avid hiker to enjoy the restaurants, shops and views offered at the station. At 7,545 feet above sea level, Fifth Station offers a commanding view of the towns and forests below. An observation point with unobstructed views of Fujiyoshida City and Lake Yamanaka can be found at Komitake Shrine behind the souvenir shops.

Yokota Artist Wins the Air Force Youth Art Contest Yokota Senior Salvador Perez’s hard work and passion for art led to his second-place win in the 2018 Air Force Youth Art Contest. Salvador has been drawing throughout his life but did not enter any art programs or classes until his junior year when he entered the Youth Arts Collective Program in Monterey, California. Through the program, Salvador was able to exhibit and sell his art at galleries and showcases. The award-winning piece, “Philippine Roots,” was originally created as a birthday present for Salvador’s younger brother. His brother’s fascination with the Philippines prompted Salvador to incorporate the ocean and dramatic rock formations characteristic of the island chain. Salvador draws inspiration through walking. “I like to take a lot of walks because you get to see new things, and it’s such a free, open space to just think.” Although Salvador prefers to draw people and tell a story through his portraits, he has been challenging himself to create more scenery and backgrounds. “I usually work a lot with people, and don’t dabble much in backgrounds, but then I realized that the background is just as much of a character as the people in the picture itself.” Salvador enjoys working in all sorts of mediums from colored pencils and sharpies to watercolors and digital. He plans to take his art hobby with him to West Point next fall, where he hopes to major in Kinesthesiology to pursue a career in physical therapy. “I want to make sure I still do art while at West Point, because art really means a lot and it has so much meaning. And the creative part of your brain, that’s a big chunk, and you don’t want it to just sit there and collect dust, you know?”

POST 9/11 GI BILL If you will have 16 years or more of active duty or Selected Reserve service after 12 July, 2019 and you hope to transfer all or part of your 36 months of the Post 9/11 to eligible dependents, you must take action prior to 12 July, 2019. If you are using the Post 9/11 GI Bill for your own educational training, it does not start the four-year active duty service commitment (ADSC). ADSC is only activated when transferred to eligible dependents enrolled in DEERS under your name. If you do not plan to transfer the benefit and you plan to use it for yourself, you do not need to take any action. Once you have made an initial transfer to any of your eligible dependents and start the four-year ADSC, you may freely reallocate the months to other dependents. Once you opt to go into the Post 9/11, either by filling out the application for benefits for yourself or going through the transfer process for dependents, you may not go back into the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB). The decision is irrevocable. You are not eligible to transfer to dependents until you have served six years of active duty. If you are an officer and incurred an ADSC for your commissioning (USAFA/ROTC), you must serve an additional 36 months after your commissioning ADSC before you are eligible to transfer. You can transfer the GI Bill to your dependents by searching “TEB” in the Air Force Portal. It will take you to the MyPers page with instructions on how to get to MilConnect. The Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC) determines if you are eligible — not the Education Office. For any other questions or concerns, call the Education Office or email 374FSS.FSDE@us.af.mil. Yokota's
Keystone Club Achieves Gold Status Yokota’s Keystone Club earned the prominent gold status charter within the Boys and Girls Club of America. This assembly of young adults collectively completed 400 service hours, initiated #WeOwnFriday teen recruitment events, mentored Torch Club affiliates and participated in National Service Initiatives. In addition, they hold weekly seminars that emphasize four key
areas: academic success, career preparation, community service and teen outreach. They are an exceptional and enthused group of adolescents and epitomize what teens are capable of when they set their minds on any given task. If you see any of these teens around base, please commend them on their extraordinary accomplishment.

INstructor Spotlight Natatorium Swim Instructor
Mari Tucker
Mari Tucker never took swim lessons as a child but her determination to learn brought her to the pool every day where she practiced on her own. As an adult, she received her swimming instructor, coach and swim-meet official certifications so she could provide students with the opportunities she never had. She has been teaching swim for over 20 years now. For Mari, swimming is not just a sport but a life-saving skill. She encourages parents to sign their children up as soon as possible. She describes ages two and three as the “golden years” for learning to swim because the earlier children learn, the more comfortable they’ll be in the water and the quicker they’ll pick it up. Her own children started lessons at two and all three of them now swim competitively. Mari currently teaches Baby Swim for ages one to three and private swim lessons for adults. She is excited to start teaching Cheep-Cheep — a new class offered at the Natatorium specifically designed for ages two and three. Through fun exercises and safety lessons, toddlers will get comfortable with the water and ready to start focusing on technique in the higher-level classes.
