FLIGHT SAFETY MEETING Sat • 4 May • 9 a.m. Kobayashi Room, Enlisted Club Join us for a local general aviation flight safety discussion group. AERO CLUB & FLIGHT TRAINING CENTER

INTRODUCTION TO SAFETY RISK MANAGEMENT Civil aviation organizations, air carriers and military aviation activities have embraced Safety Risk Management — a foundational component of all safety management systems. Single-pilot operations can also enjoy the benefits of safer, more efficient flying through the application of risk management processes. LIFE & LEISURE

Risk management offers a logical process of evaluation in which potential costs of a risk are weighed against the potential benefits. A hazard is a present condition, event, object or circumstance that could lead to, or contribute to, an unplanned or undesired event such as an accident. Examples of common aviation hazards include a nick in the propeller blade, improper refueling, pilot fatigue and the use of unapproved hardware. If pilots do not recognize or address a hazard, the involved risk could lead to a negative and potentially dangerous situation. Risk management is a three-step process that people use to ... 1. identify hazards. What conditions or circumstances could negatively affect your flight? 2. express how likely the hazards might negatively impact operations. How likely are the identified hazards to cause a problem and how severe will the consequences be if they do? 3. reduce the chances that those hazards will cause an accident. What can you do to reduce the risks to acceptable levels? It is important to constantly monitor the hazards and risks associated with our flights to make sure the identified risks remain at an acceptable level. Resources

BASEBALL GAME at MetLife Dome

SUN • 16 JUN 11 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Cultural Connection

Take family and friends out to the ballgame … a Japanese ballgame that is. Those new to Yokota may be surprised to learn baseball isn’t just America’s favorite pastime — it’s Japan’s too! The sport was first introduced to Japan in the late 1800s by an American professor and has since become the most popular sport in Japan. Travel with ITT to the MetLife Dome and root for our local professional baseball team, the Seibu Lions, as we take on the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. Purchase Lions swag at one of the vendor booths lining the stadium entrance and walkway. During the game, chant team songs and wave white flags with fellow fans as you munch on American game-day snacks like hot dogs and beer or try your hand at Japanese-style fare like yakitori and karaage. Don’t forget to buy blue balloons for the Lions captivating tradition: during the seventh inning, fans chant the team anthem and release balloons into the air.

Sign-up starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 4 May at ITT. 227-7083 • Bldg. 327

Cost: $56 Ages 4 & Up Visit YokotaFSS.com/ITT for more information.

TO FIGHT A

nnabelle Moore walked into a yoga class during a particularly stressful time in her life and felt her worries slip away as soon as she stepped onto the mat. It’s no wonder Marilee Stonestreet and Alexis Miller shared similar testimonials — studies have shown that yoga and meditation offer a number of mental health benefits. Marilee Stonestreet has been teaching yoga for four years and is a Radiant Child Family yoga teacher. She teaches Baby and Toddler Yoga at the Natatorium and Women’s Yoga at the Taiyo.

For one, they teach people to deal with life’s challenges in a calm manner. Alexis has seen first hand how yoga helps practitioners to “take that step back and just notice and welcome and greet those experiences as they are and say, ‘You know what, I’m going to respond, not react to this situation.’” She compared negative experiences to a demon. While our immediate reaction might be to freeze up and hide, yoga and meditation teach us to acknowledge their presence and calmly walk past them so we can move on with our lives. If nothing else, yoga and meditation act as filing systems, allowing us to organize our thoughts and clear our minds. Yoga is also conveniently portable. As Annabelle noted, “You can do yoga everywhere … all you need is you … It’s with you wherever you go.”

Annabelle Moore was introduced to yoga at a young age as her mother was a yoga teacher. Anabelle has been teaching for two and a half years and teaches Power Yoga at the Natatorium.

There are plenty of classes, teachers and strategies for practicing yoga and meditation. Yoga studios have sprung up across the globe and thousands of yoga flows and meditations can be accessed through phone apps, the web or on TV. The three yogis encouraged beginners to try a variety of classes, teachers and styles of yoga. They emphasized that you’re not going to love every teacher or class you take; just keep trying until you find your fit. With all the different forms and varieties out there, yoga and meditation are adaptable; find what works for you.

There are plenty of other tools you can use to stay relaxed, happy and fit to fight.

Make Time For Yourself Find a hobby

Engage in an activity that keeps your mind off life’s stresses — gardening, swimming, knitting, running or even cleaning. Any activity that allows you to simply notice your thoughts rather than attach to them is a form of meditation.

Write

During times of frustration, Marilee lists each negative experience or thought and then lists a solution or positive to each negative. Annabelle and Alexis rely on lists and planners to keep their thoughts organized. Research and try different types of journaling to discover what works best for you.

Breathe

Ground Your Thoughts Grounding exercises are helpful for moments when you’re anxious and in a time crunch.

Rock back and forth on your feet

Heel to toe, toe to heel. Take the exercise a step further by taking off your shoes.

Counting Excercise

Name five things you see, four things you touch, three things you hear, two things you smell and one thing you taste. This exercise is helpful for staying grounded and present during times of stress or nervousness.

There’s an abundance of mental health exercises available. Research online or speak to a specialist. Find the tools that work best for you so you can stay fit to fight, no matter what life throws your way.

We often take shallow, quick breaths during times of stress, consequently turning on our body’s “fight or flight” response and making ourselves feel on edge. Deep, slow breaths tell our body we are safe and in turn reduce anxiety.

Box Breathing

Breathe in for four seconds, hold your breath for four seconds, breathe out for four seconds, hold for four seconds and repeat.

Mantra Breathing

As you breathe in say to yourself, “I am…” and as you breathe out say or think to yourself a statement that speaks to you in the moment such as “relaxed,” “healthy” or “safe.”

Belly Breathing

Place one hand on your belly and your other hand on your heart. Focus on the movement of your chest and belly as you breathe in and out. Notice your body expand as you breathe in and deflate as you breathe out. This technique is best done either sitting or laying down.

Take a Class! See page 30 for a schedule of the yoga classes offered at the Natatorium and Taiyo Community Center.

Alexis Miller has been teaching yoga for three years. She received yoga training through Warriors at Ease — a program that focuses on teaching yoga to the military community. She offers Morning Yoga at the Natatorium.
