Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Still don’t have any gifts or date ideas in mind? Get creative with the help of Arts & Crafts!
Paint a Love Letter
Frame a Treasured Memory
Write your valentine a romantic note in Shodo — Japanese calligraphy. Shodo combines painting and writing to create aesthetically pleasing and artistically charged Kanji. Calligraphy is more than just fancy writing in Japan. It plays an important role in Japanese culture and way of life as it’s featured on Buddhist texts, taught in schools and written in homes as a hobby. Want to write “love” or “devoted” in Kanji? Taka Uno, the Shodo specialist and teacher, can teach you! Use colored ink and a large brush to deliberately paint your beautiful love note. Afterwards, stop by the Frame Shop to get your artistic script framed. This meaningful Valentine’s gift will remind your significant other of the memories made in Japan.
Frame treasured memorabilia at the Arts & Crafts Frame Shop. Choose from a variety of frame and mat backing colors and materials. Not sure if your chosen frame will match? Use the Frame Shop’s Visualization Station to glimpse a mirror-image of your soon-to-be-framed keepsake. Let the Frame Shop masters do the work or sign up for the Framing & Mat Cutting class to build the frame with your own two hands. Finish the class with a gift framed and ready for wrapping.
Spend Quality Time Together Build Your Babe a Boat Okay maybe not a boat. But you can make your special someone the Pinterest-worthy welcome sign or table they’ve always wanted. No need to be an expert woodworker either! Many wood shop hobbyists at Arts & Crafts are first-timers. Search the internet or browse through workbooks for design inspiration. For softer wood, shop at local Japanese stores like Cainz or Joyful Honda. For higherquality wood such as maple or cherry, purchase from Arts & Crafts. Once you’ve calculated the dimensions, the woodshop instructor, Seiji Kobayashi, can help create your wooden masterpiece.
Most would agree the greatest gift you can give is your time. Spice up your date night with Canvas at Chili’s. Sip on margaritas or snack on complimentary chips and salsa while painting with your sweetheart at this unconventional art class. The relaxed atmosphere permits casual conversation while simultaneously allowing participants to focus on the artwork at hand. The warm instructor, Chelsea Klusewitz’s, approachable demeanor makes it easy to ask for help or suggestions. Students are invited to trace the day’s drawing directly onto the canvas, or more advanced artists can take on the challenge of painting the image by sight alone. No matter the painting experience of you and your loved one, this class will make for an evening well spent.
To use Arts & Crafts’ specialized wood equipment, simply attend any of the Wood Shop’s monthly safety briefings. Arts & Crafts will then provide you with a Safety Certification card so you can use the Wood Shop any time during Arts & Crafts’ normal business hours. Call Arts & Crafts or visit their Front Desk for more information on what they offer.

SAMURAI CITY A izuwa kamatsu Sat–Sun • 23–24 Feb Sat–Sun • 23–24 Mar C ul t ur al C onnec t ion
Gain a sense of the samurai spirit as you walk among numerous samurai ancestors at Aizuwakamatsu. The city’s historical legacies are carefully preserved and handed down to future generations, providing guests with a firsthand experience of samurai culture. Explore “Tsuruga-jo,” or Tsuruga Castle — an impenetrable fortress that withstood heavy attacks during the Boshin War. Then, learn what it takes to become a samurai at one of the highest levels
of “hanko,” or samurai schools. The Nisshinkan School of Samurai was established by the Aizu Domain for the purpose of educating the next generation of warriors. Boys of samurai families entered the school at the age of 10 and were taught martial arts, mental discipline and sword and weapon techniques. Go back in time at Ouchi-juku — a post-town built to provide travelers with food and accommodations. Walk along the thick grassthatched roof buildings and get a glimpse of what it was like to travel during the Edo Period.

HOW DO I GET A STUDENT PILOT CERTIFICATE? You must complete an application through the Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) website or by submitting the FAA form 8710-1 to a Flight Standards District Office (FSDO), an FAA-designated pilot examiner, an airman certification representative associated with a part 141 flight school or a certificated flight instructor. The authorized individual will process your application and submit the required documents to the Airmen Certification Branch. Once reviewed by the Airman Certification Branch, the student pilot certificate will be mailed to the address provided on the application. HOW DO I GET A MEDICAL CERTIFICATE? Aviation medical examiners (AME) issue aviation medical certificates. A list of AMEs in our area can be found at FAA.gov. HOW LONG IS MY STUDENT PILOT CERTIFICATE AND MEDICAL CERTIFICATE VALID? Student pilot and medical certificates are no longer the same document. Refer to 14 CFR 61.23 for complete information on the duration of a medical certificate. Student pilot certificates issued after April 1, 2016 do not expire. The certificate will be surrendered and superseded upon successful completion of the higher certification.
