EDITOR’S NOTE
Many people approach the New Year with great gusto, driven by the desire to become the best version of themselves. Statistically, most won’t follow through. In this issue of Horizons, we focus on resilience—something that’s frequently discussed but often difficult to truly embody. Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from adversity; it’s about cultivating the strength, adaptability, and mindset necessary to navigate life’s inevitable challenges.
Our main article highlights the UNITE Office and its vital work in organizing recreational events that strengthen connections. At first glance, these activities may seem like simple team-building exercises, but they play a crucial role in fostering resilience.
Additionally, the Military & Family Readiness Center (M&FRC) is featured. They offer valuable resources, including assistance and educational programs, to support you during tough times.
Whether you’re seeking guidance, practical tools, or a listening ear, there are services here to help you build the skills and confidence to overcome obstacles and thrive in the year ahead. Let’s make this New Year not just about setting goals, but also about cultivating the resilience to achieve them.

Tucked into the back corner of the Yujo Community Center is a small office with a big mission. The UNITE Office serves as a hub for building camaraderie and enhancing resilience among personnel at Yokota Air Base. UNITE, which stands for Unified Network In Team-Building Events, was established to give Squadron Commanders maximum flexibility in organizing recreational programs that strengthen unit cohesion. By providing vital tools, information, and funding, the Yokota UNITE Team makes it easier than ever to coordinate recreational events that bring teams closer together and help revitalize squadrons. It’s a way to unwind, have fun, and foster those all-important workplace relationships.
These relationships are critical for resilience. When we feel at ease and connected with our coworkers, we’re better equipped to navigate challenges and perform at our best. UNITE benefits everyone in a unit: active duty, reserve, U.S. civilians (appropriated and non-appropriated), and local national civilians (MLC and IHA) directly assigned to squadrons.
The UNITE program offers a variety of trips and activities, both on and off base, tailored to the needs of each unit. In November alone, the team coordinated eight off-base excursions in response to a growing demand. According to Sherita Baker, a community programs specialist, these efforts are part of an ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of Yokota’s personnel.
“We provide opportunities for units both on and off base,” Baker explained. “Recently, we’ve noticed that most requests are for off-base activities, so we’ve been working to expand those options.”
To accommodate this demand, the UNITE Office recently welcomed a new part-time team member, Reona Kato, who plays a crucial role in coordinating off-base trips. One of her primary responsibilities
is securing 889 forms—a vital piece of paperwork required for working with external facilities.
“Having a team member who speaks Japanese and can communicate effectively with our off-base partners has been incredibly beneficial,” said Baker.
Senior Airman Moana Pouesi, also a community programs specialist, also plays a key role. She helps process unit requests, collaborates with on-base partners, and scouts potential off-base locations for future activities.
“There’s always something new and exciting happening here,” Pouesi said. “It’s rewarding to be part of a team that makes a real difference in people’s experiences at Yokota.”
The variety of activities offered through the program ensures there’s something for everyone. On-base options include popular destinations like Tomodachi Lanes and Tama Hills, while off-base excursions have recently expanded to include the Akigawa International Trout Fishing Grounds, El’s Tacos, Ome Rafting, and more. With such diverse offerings, there’s bound to be an event that resonates with every squadron.
To request UNITE funds or explore available activities, visit the Yokota Force Support Squadron website at Yokota374FSS.com. The UNITE Office team is always ready to assist with planning and execution.
“We want everyone to know we’re here for them,” Baker said. “Our goal is to help you have fun, bond with your teammates, and truly thrive during your time at Yokota.”
The UNITE Office proves that a little effort can go a long way in fostering a sense of belonging and strengthening the bonds that keep teams resilient and mission-ready.

The UNITE Program was established in August 2018 by the Air Force Services Center (AFSVC) to provide Squadron Commanders with the maximum flexibility to deliver recreational programs that build unit cohesion among personnel. The Yokota UNITE Team will provide the necessary information, tools, and funding to execute recreational focused UNITE events that facilitate unit cohesion and help revitalize squadrons.
UNITE events will benefit all Airmen in a unit – Active AF, Reserve and Civilian (appropriated and non-appropriated employees) directly assigned to the squadron. Family members and contractors are highly encouraged to participate and must pay any associated expenses.

FACE OF THE FORCE: SRA MOANATAFA POUESI
“I’m Pacific Islander, and for me, culturally, it’s really important to show appreciation and to give back to the community. It really is my calling to be in services,” Pouesi said. Her heritage instilled in her a strong sense of responsibility, and her journey in the Air Force embodies that spirit of service and dedication.
Before joining the UNITE Office, Pouesi honed her skills at the Samurai Fitness Center, where she demonstrated her commitment to promoting health and wellness among her peers. Three months ago, she transitioned to the UNITE office, bringing with her an unmatched energy and efficiency that has revitalized the program.
As a community programs specialist, Pouesi coordinates requests for trips, manages logistics, and serves as the go-to resource for anyone seeking information or guidance. Her meticulous planning and organizational skills ensure that every event meets the expectations of the squadrons she serves.
One of Pouesi’s favorite aspects of her job is scouting new locations for trips. Her role involves exploring and vetting potential destinations to ensure they meet the needs and preferences of her team. As the demand for off-base activities grows, Pouesi is at the forefront of curating unique experiences that enhance morale and camaraderie.
When Senior Airman Moanatafa Pouesi graduated from high school, one thing was crystal clear: she wanted to seize every opportunity life had to offer.
“I wanted to break the cycle in my family––finish college, travel. I just wanted to push myself to achieve more,” Pouesi shared. Her aspirations were not just lofty dreams but a purposeful mission. Since joining the U.S. Air Force four years ago, Pouesi has transformed those goals into reality. Her motivation to serve extends beyond personal achievements; it reflects a profound sense of duty and gratitude deeply rooted in her upbringing.
“It’s fun, but it does take a lot of work. There are a lot of things that need to happen behind the scenes before we can offer a place as a UNITE trip,” she explained. Her dedication to ensuring every detail is perfect reflects her unwavering commitment to excellence.
Although Pouesi is still at the beginning of her Air Force career, her drive and determination have already set her apart. With her strong work ethic, cultural values, and passion for service, there’s no doubt that Pouesi will continue to excel and inspire others along the way.
Senior Airman Moanatafa Pouesi is not just living her dream; she’s showing others they can do the same, proving that breaking cycles and striving for more is a mission worth pursuing.
Rising Strong: How the M&FRC Helps Build Resilience
Resiliency is a noun with a concise definition: the ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficulties, according to the dictionary. It’s a word you often hear in the Air Force, and for good reason. In practice resilience, and building it, is much more complex. No two situations are the same, and our responses differ just as widely.
When we talk about resiliency, we mean standing up after getting knocked down. But what knocks us down can vary greatly. Becoming resilient is a journey unique to each individual. However, there are some common strategies that can help: building strong social connections, engaging in regular exercise, practicing meditation, and cultivating self-belief. While these suggestions are helpful, they may still feel vague or inadequate when facing a personal or professional challenge.
Fortunately, resources are available to guide you. The Military & Family
Readiness Center (M&FRC) offers a variety of services to help you navigate difficult times. For example, their Military & Family Life Counselors (MFLC) provide free, confidential, nonmedical counseling to service members and their families, offering support tailored to your needs.
Additionally, the M&FRC hosts a range of classes covering various life events to help you prepare for challenges. Whether it’s the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) or Bundles for Babies, or Meditation Mondays, the center offers valuable information and tools to empower you.
When you’re facing difficulties, remember: you don’t have to go through them alone. Let the M&FRC help you build resilience and overcome life’s challenges.
NAGANO ZENKOJI TEMPLE LIGHT UP FESTIVAL
The tour cost includes bus transportation and a visit to Zenkoji Temple. Please note that there will be a significant amount of walking on this tour. It is advisable to bring a heavy jacket, as the temperature will be cold and some snow is expected. This tour is not recommended for small children due to the long bus ride and the crowded conditions at the festival. The Zenkoji Light-Up begins at 6 p.m.
*The itinerary is subject to change due to traffic or other uncontrollablecircumstances.
Nagano, widely recognized as the host city of the 1998 Winter Olympics, has its origins and development centered around the grand 1,400-year-old Zenkoji Temple. The clouds of incense smoke and the prayers of countless pilgrims at the temple’s main hall attest to its significance as a sacred and authentic place of worship. During the festival, the temple will be beautifully illuminated, transforming the surroundings into a magical winter wonderland.

YOGA
WITH JAQUELINE GOODWIN
Finding Strength and Serenity Through Yoga: A Journey to Teaching
Yoga is often described as a journey of self-discovery, and for Jaqueline Goodwin, it became a transformative path during one of the most challenging periods of her life. Feeling lost and disconnected, she searched for something to help her heal, trying various activities to no avail. It was at this lowest point that she discovered yoga—a practice that would change her life forever.
Living near a yoga studio, she decided to attend her first class without expectations. There, she met Alex, a teacher whose warmth and kindness provided an unexpected sense of safety and belonging. Even without knowing the struggles her new student faced, Alex created an environment free of judgment, allowing her to find solace in the practice.
It was during these initial classes that she experienced something profoundly new: a heightened awareness of her body, mind, and sensations. “For the first time, I could feel everything—the sensations in my body, the rhythm of my breath, and the present moment. It was as if a veil had lifted, revealing a world I hadn’t known existed.”
This newfound awareness sparked a desire to go deeper. Yoga became more than just a physical practice—it was a path inward, a way to connect with her true self. “Yoga opened up my world, allowing me to see through my heart and align my mind, body, and soul.” From that moment on, her commitment to yoga became unwavering. Her personal transformation inspired her to share this gift with others. Becoming a yoga instructor felt like a natural step, fueled by a desire to help people find the same sense of safety and awareness that had been so transformative for her. “I want to create a space where individuals can explore without fear or judgment, where they can tune inward and experience the deep connection that yoga offers.”
In her classes, she integrates postures, breath work, meditation, and relaxation, always emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and welcoming environment. Her teaching is rooted in helping students develop a deeper awareness of their mind, body, and breath, empowering them to feel more connected to themselves.
She hopes her students leave her classes with a sense of calm, peace, and presence— qualities they can carry into their daily lives. To those who feel intimidated by yoga, she offers reassurance: “Yoga is for everyone. You don’t need to be flexible to start. Through consistent practice, you’ll build flexibility, strength, and stability.”
Her journey through yoga serves as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, healing and transformation are possible. Through her teaching, she continues to share the profound lessons of yoga, offering others the chance to find balance, connection, and presence in their own lives.
