“Take advantage of all the opportunities the Air Force provides to accomplish your goals. Always stay positive and don’t let negativity weigh you down.” –SSgt Maule
If you’ve been to the M&FRC on base, you’ve probably been helped by SSgt Jeisha Maule.
The M&FRC serves all single and married service members as well as eligible family members, and civilians.
SSgt Maule supports their mission by coordinating and connecting people with the information, resources, and services they need.
That’s why she loves her job. “I have always been passionate about helping people,” she says. “I really feel like I can make a difference with the work I do.”
When asked about a particular instance during her career that stands out, SSgt Maule recalled a time when a new Airman was coming into the unit during the weekend. “He was brand new not only to Yokota but also to the Air Force and didn’t have a meal card. Because he was coming in on a Saturday, he wouldn’t be able to get one until Monday. That’s not the first impression or experience we want young Airmen to have, especially overseas. I coordinated with my team and made sure he had his meal card when he arrived. Things like that, even if they’re small, make a difference. That way they know someone cares.”
Gloria Bun, the M&FRC’s Community Readiness Consultant, confirms: “SSgt Maule was selected [for the FSS Spotlight] because she
Mission Possible: SSgt Maule Shines at the M&FRC
provides excellent customer service, supporting our military members, their families, and civilians with superb care! She is extremely organized, caring, and supports our various programs with her many skills and talents.”
There is no standard story or circumstance that leads civilians to become Airmen, and SSgt Maule is no exception to that uniqueness. Before joining, she was a military spouse born and raised in Puerto Rico. At her husband’s first duty station, Alaska, she took advantage of her time indoors to get her B.A. in Human Resources. Even still, finding a job proved tough. “It was difficult. Being a spouse presents a lot of challenges when you’re looking for a job—no matter how qualified and educated you are.” Just after she turned 30, she decided to join the Air Force herself. “My husband and family have been very supportive and are the reason I’ve been able to make the most of my career in the Air Force so far.”
Her passion for excellence and helping others is something she has passed down to her children and is evident. Her eldest daughter, Maja Maule, just graduated from Yokota High School and will be attending Jacksonville University in the fall, majoring in psychology.
SSgt Maule hopes to continue to make a positive impact on the Yokota community and the Air Force.
Maja Maule, SSgt Maule’s daughter, recently graduated from Yokota High School.
YOSHIDA FIRE FESTIVAL
Celebrated for over 500 years, the Yoshida Fire Festival, or “Yoshida no Himatsuri,” is held annually on August 26th to please the goddess of Mt. Fuji and to prevent the volcano from erupting for another year. The festival also serves as the closing ceremony for Mt. Fuji’s climbing season.
For this lively festival, the entire community comes out to watch the burning of large taimatsu torches and the parade of two large omikoshi, or portable shrines, through the streets. The Fire Festival is one of Fuji-Yoshida’s most prized cultural possessions, and this year’s festival promises to live up to its reputation.

National Culinary Month:
Sous–Chef
Laura Mayumi Ohno
July is National Culinary Month, a time to celebrate the artistry and dedication of chefs and sous chefs. It’s a profession unlike any other, and though the results are ephemeral, the impression a well-cooked meal leaves is eternal. Cooking, as with any creative pursuit, is just as much, and some might argue more so, about following your passion than a recipe.
For Laura Mayumi Ohno, the Officers’ Club’s new souschef or “foreman,” cooking has always been an act of self expression and a way to explore her identity. Born in Uruguay, Ohno originally studied architecture in college. A job at the university cafeteria changed all that. While her journey to Japan was filled with long hours and hard work, she enjoyed every minute. Though she does not have any formal culinary training, she has worked at the U.S. Embassy in Japan, the Tokyo American Club, and is now employed by the Officers’ Club at Yokota Air Base.
Ohno seamlessly blends international influences to create flavors that are uniquely her own. One of her favorite foods to experiment with is rice. “Rice is so versatile and underestimated—that’s why I enjoy cooking with it so much,” Ohno says.
When she’s not in the kitchen, Ohno enjoys traveling and often visits her husband’s family in Spain. She encourages everyone to explore all of the excellent food that Japan has to offer, “...but of course, you should also come and try out the menu at the Officers’ Club!” she says. Ohno looks forward to bringing her experience and her flair to the Yokota community.

For pet parents, having a 9–5 job is essential to support their furry family member’s lifestyle. While many would love to stay home and play all day, it is simply not possible. Enter the Pet Care Center.
One of the services they offer is daycare for your dog or cat. There are many great reasons to consider daycare for your pet. Here are just a few:
NO MORE LONG DAYS AT HOME ALONE
Let’s be honest, staying at home all day without your favorite human is no fun. Daycare provides pets the opportunity to get out of the house under the supervision of staff members.
SOCIALIZATION
Daycare offers a safe environment for dogs and cats to interact. No more long, lonely hours of sitting by the door waiting for you to come home.
EXERCISE
Running and playing are encouraged at daycare, helping your pet get the exercise they need. Especially if you work long hours and it’s extremely hot outside, daycare ensures your pet has a positive outlet for their energy—instead of destroying your house.
CONVINCED? CURIOUS? TO MAKE A RESERVATION OR FOR ADDITIONAL INQUIRIES, CONTACT THE PET CARE CENTER AT 225-8906.

Our youth sports leagues wouldn’t be possible without dedicated volunteer coaches. One such coach is Oliver Barfield. He coaches soccer, basketball, and baseball. When asked what inspires him to volunteer, Coach Barfield replied with this:
“Youth Sports is so much more than just sports. The lessons learned build the character of our young men and women. I love being a part of the team that creates the environment for those lessons.”
Thank you, Coach Barfield and all the fantastic coaches! If interested in becoming a coach, please contact Youth Sports at 225-4199.
