tiny.toes.n.pawz The World’s Largest Rice Paddy Art! The Lotus Museum is the viewing spot for this Guinness World Record art. Each year they make a new design in the rice paddy’s, by using different varieties of rice plant to change the colors in the design. This year is the 30th year and the mosaic is based off of a movie. Although we missed the full bloom of the Lotus flowers, the ones that were left were still beautiful. It really just gives us a reason to come again...earlier in the summer.

18 HORIZONS SEPTEMBER 2023

On the 29th of this month, the nation of Japan will celebrate the festival of Tsukimi. Directly translated, the word means “viewing the moon,” and it is a long-standing tradition that has permeated the culture for centuries. Customarily, Tsukimi is an opportunity to show gratitude for a bountiful harvest and hope for prosperity in the following seasons. On the old lunar calendar, the 15th of each month was always the full moon, known as jūgoya. The 15th night of the ninth month was considered the best evening to see the moon every year, giving rise to the alternate name for this mid-autumn festival: Jūgoya no tsukimi. Jūgoya was introduced to Japan through the Tang dynasty in China (A.D. 618–907), and it spread like wildfire amongst the aristocrats of the Nara (A.D. 710–794) and Heian (A.D. 794–1185) periods. These aristocrats would host moon viewing (tsukimi) parties, usually held on a boat where they could observe the reflection of the full moon in the surrounding water. Those in attendance would spend the evening penning poetry and playing music. Over time, these events slowly trickled into the lives of the commoners and by the Edo period (A.D. 1603–1868), the people had adopted and adapted this autumn festival to become a celebration of the rice harvest. Those who are participating in this celestial festival gather at the tsukimidai, or the viewing place for the moon. Usually a

window or balcony, the tsukimidai is decorated with offerings like tsukimi-dango, susuki, and taro bulbs—all of which bear significance to the event. Tsukimi-dango are rice dumplings rolled into the shape of a ball to represent the moon. Some traditions call for them to be displayed in pyramids of 15, to represent the 15th night. Other traditions display only 12, one dumpling for each month of the year. Eating the tsukimidango is said to bring joy and good health. Placed next to the dumplings are susuki, or plumes of pampas grass, bundled into groups of five or ten. Pampas grass closely resembles rice plants and is used as a decorative piece during the festival to represent the plentiful harvest. Occasionally, taro bulbs are also set out, each bulb producing multiple shoots which signify a large family. If you’re an iPhone user, you can search “moon festival” in your emojis to see the emoji especially crafted for tsukimi. It features tsukimi-dango and susuki in its artwork!

The word tsukimi has often appeared in the names of dishes here in Japan. The moon-like shape of an egg yolk has made it an easy descriptor for many meals, such as tsukimi ramen, soba, and even hamburgers. Anything topped with an egg may be referred to as the “tsukimi” edition of the food.

This article is for educational purposes only.

If you’d like to participate in Tsukimi, Tama Hills will be hosting their annual Tsukimi Celebration, where you can join them for traditional Japanese foods, sake, and beautiful views of the moon!

ITINERARY: Depart 7 a.m. Nikko 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Return 6 p.m.

Nikko’s Toshogu Shrine celebrates Grand Autumn Festival! Take in the spectacular sight of the Sennin-Gyoretsu, or “Procession of a Thousand Warriors.” The procession consists of an Omikoshi, or portable shrine, and a cavalry of warriors adorned in traditional garments and armed with historical weapons. It departs from the Futarasan Shrine of Sannai, Nikko, and heads for the Otabisho, a temporary resting place about one kilometer away. The festival is a fascinating insight into 17th century Japan as it reenacts the funeral ceremony of the First Shogun of Tokugawa, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616).
