EDITOR’S NOTE
Like many, there’s a line in my job description that designates miscellaneous tasks as “other duties as assigned.”
Under that ambiguous umbrella is briefing at the Newcomers’ Orientation every Thursday.
Those two days are jam-packed with information. For the newly arrived and often jet-lagged, it’s a lot to process. When I brief, I always begin with the aspects of FSS that will help folks do what they are most excited about, travel.
In this special edition issue of Horizons, you’ll find a wealth of information on how to do just that.
Whether you’re looking around the Tokyo area or want to explore by car, train, or plane, I hope you’ll be inspired to embark on your next adventure.

GETAWAY WITH SEIBU RAILWAY
When it comes to taking a trip into downtown Tokyo, the go-to station for denizens of Yokota Air Base is undeniably Fussa Station. But what if there were another option—one that offers a more relaxed and leisurely experience? Haijima Station, just an eight-minute drive from the main gate, and Seibu-Tachikawa Station, also eight minutes away from the east gate, are both exceptional alternatives to consider. Additionally, these stations offer affordable parking. And if you can’t access your favorite stops, don’t worry—it’s still easy to reach places like Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, and even Kawagoe.
So, come join the marketing team on our little field trip to Hana-Koganei Station via the Seibu-Haijima Line, and we’ll show you exactly why we love taking Seibu Railway. We’ll even share some hidden gems that are an easy ride from the base.
By Sara Dunn
SEIBU-TACHIKAWA
We begin our journey at Seibu-Tachikawa Station. It’s a spacious station away from the hustle and bustle of commuters that often bog down the frequented Chuo Line. Suica and PASMO are easily accepted here and for those buying a one-way ticket, a stamp can be requested turning your ticket into a special souvenir!
HAIJIMA
SEIBU-TACHIKAWA
We had an amazing day traveling the Seibu-Haijima Line and exploring some of the hidden gems not far from base! Thank you Seibu Railway for showing us the way and the Tamarokuto Science Center and Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum for rounding out the experience.
SEIBU RAILWAY TAMAROKUTO SCIENCE CENTER EDO-TOKYO OPEN AIR ARCHITECTURAL MUSEUM
TAMAROKUTO SCIENCE CENTER
Perfect for the little ones, the Tamarokuto Science Center is within walking distance of Hana-Koganei Station. However, a “kawaii” local bus can also take you there. The science center has five floors of immersive and engaging exhibits that aim to educate with a lot of fun thrown in. Explore space and learn about astrophysics, test your knowledge of the human body with fun games, observe the mechanisms that can be found in daily objects, get familiar with the local wildlife, and even take a glimpse back in time with fossils! There is no shortage of activities here that can entertain both children and adults.
SEIBU-SHINJUKU
Ever gotten lost in Shinjuku Station? We certainly have...but no longer! SeibuShinjuku Station has your back. With only two exits to worry about, you’ll find yourself in front of Kabukicho Tower with little to no effort. Not only that, but Seibu-Shinjuku Station also puts you near Shin-Okubo’s Korea Town. This is without a doubt the easiest way to get to Kabukicho, Shinjuku and Korea Town.
STATIONHANA-KOGANEI
EDO-TOKYO OPEN AIR ARCHITECTURAL MUSEUM
Backtracking from the science center and past Hana-Koganei Station, we strolled through the beautiful Koganei Park and arrived at our second destination: the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum. Buildings from the Edo to the Showa period have been relocated and preserved in this open air museum giving visitors an immersive peak at what life during the Edo to the Showa period was like. Among storefronts and even a bathhouse are residencies, some showcasing the unique mix between Japanese and western achitecture. After exploring the town, visit the rest house for some udon. Served both hot or cold, this noodle dish is a perfect way to refresh no matter what season you visit.

OLIVIA
JOHNSON DRIVES SUCCESS AT VEHICLE OPERATIONS
Don’t want to take a plane or a train to your next destination? Check out the options at Vehicle Operations! From U-Drive rentals and chauffeured transportation service to pre-purchased and emergency shuttle tickets, they can help you with all your vehicle transportation needs.
With a variety of services and dozens of vehicles to manage, ensuring everything runs smoothly is critical. Enter Olivia Johnson, a customer service clerk since 2023.
Her duties span a wide spectrum, ranging from clerical to interpersonal. Whether she’s filing documents, coordinating with the dispatcher, or providing information to a customer, her work keeps things moving–literally. While her job encompasses a variety of tasks, her favorite part is helping customers.
“I love informing people about our services to help them get what they need. Some people are shocked to find out about the amazing services we provide!” Johnson said.
Johnson often goes the extra mile to ensure customers are satisfied, even if it means doing a little extra. “There was a customer who was unsure how to use our car wash machine. Instead of explaining it, I went outside and showed them how it works. They were really grateful.”
Her passion for helping others is a shared sentiment throughout the Vehicle Operations Office. Johnson notes the welcoming atmosphere is something she appreciates. “Everyone is so friendly and willing to help each other no matter the task,” she said.
Outside of work, Olivia stays active by playing for the FSS intramural softball team, the Yokota Lady Warriors, and the Tama International Softball League at Tama Hills.
Vehicle Operations provides several valuable services that some customers might not know about:
• U-Drive Rentals: Customers can rent passenger vans for $80 per day, including toll certificates, which is an affordable way to explore Japan.
• Chauffeured Transportation Services: For a fee, customers can hire a driver for airport transfers or trips to destinations like Mt. Fuji, often using our tour buses.
• Pre-Purchased Shuttle Tickets: Instead of paying cash at airport shuttle bus pick-ups, customers can buy tickets in advance at our office with a credit card. Showing an Air Force Club Membership Card earns a 10% discount.
• Emergency Shuttle Tickets: Available for those on emergency leave or official sponsors picking up PCSing members. Tickets can be requested in advance at our office. Contact your First Sergeant for more details.
KAWAGOE FESTIVAL
The Kawagoe Festival takes place on the third Saturday and Sunday of October, drawing numerous festival-goers eager to experience this vibrant event. Its most remarkable features are the float parade, which recreates the “Edo Tenka Matsuri,” and the “Hikkawase” float competition.
Spectacular floats adorned with exquisitely crafted ornaments and dolls are paraded through Kawagoe’s “Kurazukuri” district, known for its traditional Japanese architecture. The sheer scale of the floats, some weighing up to 7.5 tons, is truly impressive.
As festival-goers cheer, the excitement peaks during the evening Hikkawase, featuring a traditional Japanese orchestra with flutes, drums, handbells, and dancing. With a history spanning over 360 years, the Kawagoe Festival preserves the elegance of the “Edo Tenka Matsuri” while incorporating unique elements of Kawagoe. In 2005, the festival was designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

F UN & FRI ENDSHIP at the YOKOTA FARMERS MARKET
T he Yokota Farmers Market has become one of the base’s most anticipated monthly events. Every second Saturday since March of 2023, hundreds come out to shop for fresh produce and handmade goods. This is not only beneficial to the local economy, but it also fosters connections between base residents and locals.
On these special Saturdays, vendors and shoppers can be seen talking, tasting, and trying out new things. Ensconced within the base gates, it’s easy to forget that we are only an hour and change away from Tokyo; there is a decidedly small-town feel.
Shopping isn’t the only activity available either. A variety of activities are available, especially for kids. From the Kids’ Corner Craft Booths, DIY games, game zones, and interactive inflatables, they’re just as thrilled to attend the market as their parents.
Around the Kanto, farmers have taken note. Participation has grown substantially, with requests coming from all around the region. With them, they’ve brought a large selection of foods, beverages, and crafts.
As the Farmers Market continues to grow and become ingrained in the Yokota community, there are so many possibilities for friendship, food, and fun to happen.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT YOKOTA’S AERO CLUB
Travelers, if you are in pursuit of a perspective that few are privileged to experience, you need to check out the Aero Club’s flights over Tokyo. Offering both day and night flights, you can see Tokyo like never before. At just $250, it’s an incredible deal.
With four new planes coming, the sky is truly the limit for what the Aero Club can offer. Two have already arrived. These DA40-NGs require less fuel, which helps keep the price point for training affordable. Not only that, but they have a reputation for superb handling, making them ideal for anyone looking to learn to fly.
But the old planes aren’t going away. The Cessnas will continue to be used to give tours. This not only ensures that the DA40s can be used for training, but the physical make-up of the Cessnas lends itself to sightseeing. “The location of the wings, high vs. low, also makes for a better experience,” Ray Brannam, the Yokota Aero Club manager, explained.
Brannam is proud to offer the Yokota community this experience. “Our rental rates for aircraft here are remarkably cheap even compared to prices in the States. Compared to Japan, they are wildly
cheap,” said Brannam. Given that similar tour services off-base can cost up to $1,200, it’s an opportunity of a lifetime.
Not only does the Aero Club offer flights, but they can also help you get your pilot’s certificate. “Most of our members are learning to fly; you don’t have to already be certificated to be a member,” said Brannam. You don’t even have to reside at Yokota Air Base either. As the only Aero Club in mainland Japan, they have members from all over, from Misawa to Atsugi.
The Aero Club will help you through the entire process and provide you with the resources you need to obtain your certificate. With classroom instruction, sessions in a flight simulator, navigation lessons, and more, students are wellprepared for any situation they may encounter.
To those thinking of getting their certificate but who keep putting it off, Brannam offers this: “One of the most disappointing things for me is when people come here and they only have two months left [at Yokota] and say ‘I wish I would have started this earlier.’ If you’re interested, start now! Pursue your dreams while you’re here.”

Navigating the Next Chapter: EMPOWERING
Military Spouses for Civilian Life Success with Spouse TAP
Just because your spouse is transitioning out of the military doesn’t mean your adventures are over! The process can be stressful for both the activeduty member and the spouse. Unlike the civilian world, where changing jobs or careers is common, leaving the military means leaving a lifestyle.
Thankfully, there are myriad resources to help make the adjustment as smooth as possible. One such resource is Spouse TAP. No matter how long your spouse has been serving, attending Spouse TAP can give you the knowledge you need to move forward with confidence.
Spouse TAP is a quarterly four-hour class held at the M&FRC that mirrors the TAP class that service members are congressionally mandated to attend.
“It’s beneficial for spouses to attend so they have some context for what their spouse is also learning,” said Deven Stone, the Work & Life Specialist at the Military and Family Readiness Center. Of course, spouses are more than welcome to attend TAP along with their service members.
Christiana Schaefer, a former military spouse who participated in the program, noted how helpful the class was. “It gave me a high-level overview of what my spouse would be going through for his TAP journey and gave me a good idea of what days I wanted to attend with my spouse.”
Spouse TAP approaches the process through the lens of a spouse and the unique challenges that they may face. It also provides context to the TAP classes that service members attend. “I would start with Spouse TAP so that you get an idea of what areas you want more information on and then plan to attend those days when your spouse goes through,” said Schaefer.
While the lifestyle change can be stressful, Stone reminds spouses that the change can ultimately be a positive one. Because they will be moving less frequently, won’t be faced with deployments, and will have a more stable schedule, the spouse has a chance to shine in their career if they choose. Even if you’ve never worked before, Spouse TAP can provide resources to educate and prepare you to look for and interview for a job.
That’s the key point Stone underscored: there are so many resources for those planning on getting out of the military. TEAMS, or Transition Employment Assistance for Military Spouses, provides virtual asynchronous classes that are useful no matter if you’re five years out or five months away from transitioning. Dealing largely with employment, the information on resume building, interviewing, and marketing oneself is invaluable.
“These classes are really valuable, and having this knowledge eases the pressures of transitioning,” said Stone. “The fact that they can be done asynchronously is helpful to those of us who are OCONUS,” said Stone.
Spouse TAP doesn’t just cover employment topics, however. There is also a lot of financial information. This is part of the lifestyle aspect that, after many years insulated by the military, folks forget to plan for. From health insurance, legal services, and housing costs, Spouse TAP educates spouses on budgeting and the aspects of civilian life that they may not have considered.
Another aspect of the class is the shift in identity as a military spouse. Though certainly not anyone’s entire identity, there is a sort of shared understanding and camaraderie that comes with being in a military community that can be lacking in the civilian world. Though by no means impossible to find and not the be-all and end-all of someone’s personality, shifting away from that mindset is acknowledged.
Stone stresses that everyone will come away with something different, depending on their priorities. “There is so much information, and it definitely can be overwhelming,” she said. “When running the classes, however, I do try to customize it to what the attendees are most curious about, whether it’s healthcare, employment, benefits, or another aspect. The goal is to ensure that everyone walks away with their questions answered.”
Wherever you’re going, the M&FRC is there to support you through it.
