Faculty and Staff Give Back to YCP
Current faculty and staff are integral to York College’s survival as an institution. Without their generous support, through both gifts and teaching, York College would not be able to function. We sat down with three current members of faculty and staff: Sueann Robbins, Director of Graduate and Transfer Admissions; Colleen Adamy, Senior Administrative Assistant for the Office of Communications, and Dr. Scott Hamilton, Professor of Civil Engineering, to find out why they choose to give to York College and ensure it prospers.
Why do you give to York College?
Colleen: I give to York College because I get to see firsthand on a daily basis the amazing things the College offers not only for the students, but for employees, parents, and the community. For instance, scholarships, new programs, state-of-the-art equipment/facilities, and Cultural Events. It’s been amazing to witness how the College has grown over the years.
Sueann: YCP is very important to me and my family! My daughter graduated from [YCP] in 2016 and she had a great experience as a student leader. She is the reason I wanted to work here, and I give back so that other students can have the same great experiences that she did.
Dr. Hamilton: One of the student leaders in our first class of civil engineers, Jack Stubbs, died unexpectedly from natural causes at the age of 21. This was a huge blow to his family, friends, and all in our small program. When it appeared we could do something significant to remember Jack, I knew I wanted to be a part of that.
What has been your most memorable experience at YCP?
Colleen: Having worked at York College for 30 years, I have been given so many amazing opportunities. Going up in a hot air balloon, hearing Maya Angelou speak, attending a private Patti Labelle concert, and watching my daughters walk across the stage to receive their diplomas are just a few highlights. I also had a great time being a part of the downtown tour for the College’s 50th anniversary. We had the privilege of riding a trolley through downtown York with some York Junior College (YJC) alumni seeing College-related landmarks.
Sueann: My most memorable experience was being asked to be the Parent Speaker at Convocation in [the] Fall of 2017. I was so proud to represent YCP to all the incoming students and their parents and thrilled to talk about our family’s love of YCP.
Dr. Hamilton: Growing the new Civil Engineering program and seeing our graduates succeed and get great civil engineering jobs after graduation.
What would you say to someone who’s thinking about giving back to the College?
Colleen: I would encourage everyone to give to the College. No amount is too small and every donor/ donation really does make a difference. When you give to York College you are investing in our future and helping to create a strong foundation for incoming students. What a great investment! In just a few short years, my eldest granddaughter will be ready to start the college search process, and I will be sure to encourage her to consider YCP. York College Proud!
Sueann: We all work here because of our love of higher education and, hopefully, are motivated to see our Spartans succeed in all areas—academics, service, and community. It takes ALL of us to create those pathways to success for our students and giving just a little extra will go a long way for our current and future students.
Dr. Hamilton: The need is real and there are countless ways to contribute and make a difference. Find a need or program that speaks to you and make a difference!
