ACCESS TO HE ART & DESIGN The Access Art and Design course provides students with a broad knowledge in a range of disciplines. We offer a supportive atmosphere in which to develop students’ skills and interests, and to build their confidence. The course begins with an introduction to creative art and design units through working with a wide variety of materials and processes. Students will go on to complete projects in digital art, painting and drawing, textiles, book art, 3D, printmaking, alongside a broad range of self-directed projects. At all stages, students will be encouraged to adopt an innovative, creative, and personal approach to their work to build an individual portfolio. Students will be asked to work on self-directed briefs, which will prepare them for developing at their own practice or further study at degree level.
Denny Atkinson My final project is based on fruit, with particular focus on colour and texture. I particularly loved the vibrancy and contrast of the colours and seeds of dragon fruit and pomegranates which I incorporated into my images. I decided to develop these two fruits further in an abstract style, using a range of mixed media techniques. The processes that I used initially were paint, printing and inks. The lack of control of the inks really appealed to me. I developed my designs further using free motion embroidery, which I really enjoyed. I found I could create colours using collage and paint on fabric which I enhanced further with free machine stitch, fabric swatches and reverse applique. Next year I am progressing onto the second year of Access where I intend to develop my skills further and specialise in mixed media and machine embroidery.

Jessica Shaw ‘Birds of a feather’ - lockdown guests The theme of my final piece of work is birds from my garden seen during lockdown 2020. My idea was to build on my multiples of birds and feathers project exploring colour and texture in more detail. I have created a series of drypoint mono prints with my own patterned chine collé papers, based on the deconstructed plumage of birds, feathers and nests seen in my garden during lockdown 2020. Each print represents a bird and I have made nine in total - the colours and patterns give clues to which birds are represented. I have used this opportunity to be more abstract and free in my artwork while finding that a narrative is important for me and helps me guide my creative process. Shown here are Bullfinch, Great Tit, Woodpecker, Song Thrush and Goldfinch.

Laura Smelt For my final project I decided to focus on graphic and product design. I used my skills of drawing and mark making to digitally create a professional packaging design which could be seen in retail shops. I chose fossils, rocks and minerals as my inspiration and developed my drawings into abstract designs with particular emphasis on texture, line, and natural tones. My designs focused on companies that would use eco-friendly and natural products.

Michelle Rowland This project was focused on looking at the shapes and objects around us based on the theme of multiple and repetitive images. We were asked to choose a multiple and I chose ‘keys’, as it was an everyday item that everyone would be familiar with. My initial drawings using different mark making techniques and media based on my primary and secondary research was a fundamental part of the process. The drawings prompted me to develop my work further exploring how to recreate the textures that could be found in keys, as well as using my artist research Jean-Michel Basquiat and surface pattern designer Laura Slater for inspiration on style, process, method, and colour. I found that I was particularly interested in the shape and texture found in keys and developed my ideas through mono printing and screen printing. I intend to take my designs into cushion covers.
Saba Siddiqui My work here is focused on textiles and surface pattern design, with the intention to make a pair of trousers for my final project. I have a keen interest in fashion and styling which is extended to design, and this has given me an eye for marrying up colours and a balance between complimentary and contrasting hues. I came into the Access course with a science and medicine background with the intention of becoming an art therapist and am glad to say I will be starting at the University of Leeds studying Art and Design and then go on to complete a Masters in Art Therapy. During the course, I have learnt so many new skills which I am excited to use and build upon in the future and I am very excited to continue my creative journey and see where it leads.

Sarah White In this project, we were to produce a mood board of ideas based on the theme of “multiples”. I chose seed pods due to my love of natural forms. I wanted to put together a series of images utilising all the skills I had learnt during the first year of my parttime access course. I have particularly enjoyed mark making and wanted to push myself to be a little more abstract and free flowing. I experimented with different mediums and processes including collage, inks, paint and mark making tools to produce a variety of different outcomes. I concentrated mainly on the seed head “honesty” as I loved its translucent qualities. The images produced, will be the basis of my final project next year, in which I hope to make a kinetic sculpture or some form of interior lighting.

LEVEL 3 UAL FASHION YEAR 1 This is an exciting contemporary course for students interested in studying fashion. The course is delivered through inspirational projects covering a very wide range of themes specialising in all visual and technical aspects of fashion. Specialist taught skills include fashion illustration, pattern cutting, Computer Aided Drawing (CAD), garment construction and all aspects of fashion. There are also real-life projects, competitions and opportunities to work with professionals. Throughout the programme there are educational visits to galleries, workshops, museums, exhibitions and places of specific interest to extend students awareness of the wide range of contemporary creative activity.
Kingsley As a fashion designer I like to take a theme and run with it with an open mind and see how it is relevant to me. ENCOUNTER is a visual representation of my encounter with a wasp where I found wonder and beauty in the creature. I wanted to incorporate some subtle technical details that demonstrated the natural beauty of the insect itself. The development of this project was mainly based on research conducted to help build a stronger and more informed image of the insect and its lifestyle. DATA is the most personal project I’ve done so far. The resultant design directly reflects the positive impact the contraceptive pill Cerazette has had on my life since prescribed. On the garment you can see data reflecting the time I have gained without suffering periods and pills I have taken. This design represents my emancipation and freedom to enjoy life.
Progressing to studying After concluding my 2nd year at York College in 2022, I hope to go on to study a BA (Hons) fashion course at the University of Arts London.
Isabella Ibbotson I’m a level three fashion design student in my first year. These images are from my Final Major Project ‘DATA’. I took this project in the direction of data from shopping so I collected receipts over a couple of months. I generated ideas from the receipts to create lots of textile samples. My favourite samples were the plastic and receipts which I quilted and used to make a cropped jacket. I have enjoyed this ‘DATA’ project and I am really happy with the outcome of my jacket.

Patryk Lotocki For my Data project I have chosen maps as my inspiration, I went on to google maps and had a look at where I’ve been on the map over a week and hoped for something visually pleasing so I got my colour pallets together, drew inspired by the shapes created by my paths and designed this blazer, which turned out well. For the future I hope to finish college and hopefully go to study bespoke tailoring at London college of fashion.

Maisy Wilbraham I am in my first year of studying fashion at college. The photos I have chosen to show are from our first project Surrealism that we studied in September and our most recent project Data. In both projects I was inspired by colour. For surrealism I used dark earthy tones where as for the data project I investigated bright neon colours. I am looking forward to going into second year and then forwarding onto university.

Rosie May Kendra I am a first-year fashion student at York college I have just finished my final major project which was based around the subject data and from that subject I took the topic of coding and I designed and developed a garment around that topic. I really enjoyed the project and the suit I modified really turned out great. I am just starting out as a young designer and have yet to decide what I what to do as a career however I am open minded and like trying new things. I have a very eclectic style and I enjoy researching different styles and seeing wear I can fit them in to my own wardrobe.

Sarina Pun I am currently studying a fashion and clothing extended diploma course at York College. I chose this course because I was inspired by the creative aspect and the versatility of the subject. The photos I have selected are from my data project which is from our final project of year 1. Personally, I found the data project difficult because it was challenging to generate ideas surrounding data. I enjoyed creating the mood boards and fashion illustration because they allow me to be innovated through my drawing and digital abilities rather than the technical side. I am very excited and looking forward to attending university next year and continue with my fashion education.

Isabella Boddy I am a year 1 student studying a level 3 extended diploma in Fashion and clothing. I am interested and passionate about fashion design and clothing as it allows me to be creative and show of my interests through my work and designs. This is some of my work from my final project from year 1 with the title ‘data’. From that I researched into ideas and themes I could develop and came across nature and developing that further into carnation flowers from the information and data I had gathered within my research. With reflecting on my project, I really enjoyed it as I felt that I had a lot of creative freedom and control from my research, process samples and designs. I am excited to be going into year 2 of my course as I can develop my skills and ideas further.

Patrycja Klis Data was the topic for my final major project and I directed my project towards ‘Auschwitz ’ I used primary research with the pictures I took when I visited a while ago. I enjoyed the topic as I could learn more information about the history; I find interesting. Overall, in all the projects I have done in year 1; I enjoy the research aspect and the construction of the garment as I am quite confident with using the sewing machines now. I like doing samples however I feel like I need to incorporate more into my work. After college, I would like my job to be involved with fashion. During the summer break, I would like to do a few projects of my own and make garments that I will wear.

Flo Simmons For this data project, I chose to investigate maps. I think I found some good artists in my research and it was easy to find shape and silhouette in the images. I think I should have looked more into different sources of research and thought about how I could find primary research as well as secondary. I could have improved in my mind map when beginning the project but am quite happy with the research I got from it. I don’t think I found it easy to find different alternative ideas and struggled to have exciting ideas. I really enjoy how my project turned out because I think that I was more motivated and enthusiastic being back in college, so I was much more dedicated to the project. I really enjoy using the sewing machines and creating different small samples and seeing the final product come together. After college I would like to involve creating and making clothing into my life and possibly take it into a career.

Syd-Alicia Newman My FMP was a peculiar one but fun to push myself to new limits. My inspiration was toys and vintage toys using social media I put a question out of ‘what toys did you have as a kid?’ and ‘when were you born?’. From all that information I made a timeline and then a grid. Next, I choose two of the toys that got my attention and developed on them as well as alphabet blocks and jigsaw foam mats. 80s vintage toy designs helped to decide my colour palette. I also looked at children’s fashion from 1940s-1950s. I’ve been wanting to improve my pattern making and sewing skills, so I didn’t concentrate a lot on decorative detail. I concentrated on how I was going to make it look like a dungaree dress and then a top and a skirt when detached from each other. I love how this came out and I’m so excited to challenge myself in garment making and accessories in year 2.

Brodie Taylor Studying fashion has been a great experience for me, I have found many aspects very interesting, and I feel as though I have developed as a person due to the nature of the course; I have been able to learn more about designers as well as brands and the clothing they create. I have loved developing my drawing abilities which has enhanced my sketchbook work and the process of creating a garment as accurately as possible. I really like this course and I feel as though the projects we have completed throughout the year have been very suited to me and topics I enjoy. Surrealism was my favourite project to do as I felt it gave me the ability to display all of the creative options available to me. I really have loved this year, creating garments and sketchbooks has been great all round.

Sidar Altin During the first year of this course, I have had to learn many new skills, most importantly it grew my confidence. In my secondary school I decided to do textiles and I knew I wanted to peruse something with that, and I learnt many techniques and skills. Textiles covers a varies of different topics and I was very familiar with most of them because of my experience which I developed even more. Throughout this course my favourite part was the technical/ making as I really enjoyed, before now, I had never made anything or completed a garment. It has inspired me to really think about my future and what I want to achieve over the next couple of years. In the future, I can see myself working towards other qualifications such as Architecture, perhaps I would be able to combine my fashion skills with architecture and work in the interior design sector.

Olivia Cameron I am also currently studying fashion and textiles at York college and as our project we were told investigate Data deeply and then gradually make a garment out of all of our research with our choices. From data I chose the subject area around trees because they are undervalued, and nobody talks about the beauty inside the tree and that is what I was expressing. On the images you can see some of my development and what garments I would’ve made if I had decided differently. My favourite part of this project was actually making the garment and fitting it to myself so that I could model it.

My work has always been fairy tale related and I suppose that’s what I wish to bring to you, the audience. I wish to create magical pieces someday that will make the audience stare in awe and hopefully the models feel as though they’re being transported to a different world. Smiles are what I seek, for they are one of the most wonderful things in the world, and hopefully I made you smile too. I hope you have a nice day and feel free to take your time to really appreciate every individual’s work. For they put their heart and souls into it.

Kiara Boulton I want to do my bachelorette degree in fashion because I am passionate and driven and am interested in furthering my education and I enjoy learning. I am very good with skills that involve my hands and organisation and I enjoy being creative, so I have enjoyed all my projects because they allow me to explore different techniques and methods. I have massively improved my computer skills with a lot of work, but I am very glad that they are getting better because I am challenging myself to get better. Outside of college I am interested in tv, books, embroidery, painting, and challenging puzzles like finding games and criss cross. I am very caring and can keep calm under pressure and can remember a lot of details. I mainly travel by walking to places because I think it’s fun and I enjoy seeing different areas and keeping active.

Isobel Brown I am currently doing the L3 diploma in fashion design. For my encounters project I was inspired by the graffiti and wall art that I saw in Norway, I think that this is my favourite garment I have made from the three I have done in my first year. I also included a photo of some of my designs for my FMP project, data. These five were my favourites from the designs I created, the second design is the one I used for my final garment. I have enjoyed taking this course so next year I am going to continue into my second year.

Ellie Costello During the first year of this course I have developed many new skills and grown as a person. I started off upcycling garments as I was more comfortable doing that than starting from scratch. I experimented with lots of new techniques such as fabric painting,, I really liked the effect it gave and the contrast against the fabric. Another thing I enjoyed was pattern drafting and editing the blocks to fit how I wanted, I really like the freedom of being able to create what I like. Although I found the first few sleeves I did difficult, I enjoyed the whole process of fitting them in. I especially liked doing the tulip sleeve. Another sample I really liked doing was quilting, it was easy to do and I liked the effect. Overall this course has taught me many things and I’ve made some good friends.

Trinity Holdsworth For me fashion was always what I wanted to study. I have always loved being creative and arty since I was young which you can see in my GCSE artwork and my Year 1 college projects. I love being able to use my ideas to create something very personal and exciting. Each project for me has been a success; I have been able to learn from them all and improve more and more each time in my sketchbook work and in my final garments. My favourite part of studying fashion is the learning, every time I am at college, I am taught new skills which I know will help me be successful in my future as a fashion designer. Hopefully once I have finished my second year I can use everything I have learnt to launch my fashion career and work in the bridal fashion industry alongside other top designers.

Jessica Machin The course has enabled me to research, design and make garments. It encourages me to push myself to the best ability I can and to think outside the box with creativity for each project. The images shown are from my Final Major Project. At the start it was based on Data, my first thought was numbers. I couldn’t see how I would be able to make a garment based on data. This theme required a lot of research, using many different resources, but after all of my research I was really excited to design and go on to make my final piece. Thinking outside the box of my first ideas based on data and linking it to the most viewed programme on Netflix allowed me to create a dress and corset based on the main character and bring the dress to life in the photos. Starting this course I knew that fashion could be so many things and be different for everyone, but seeing other people’s ideas and imagination based on the same topic as my own is very inspiring. I feel working along side my peers, I am continuously learning and improving my work.

Alisa Craven My interest in fashion and the creative field has been a big part of me since I was younger. Influenced by the people around me and my interests, such as architecture and nature, I enjoy including my own style towards the projects I have been assigned to design and make. For example, I used graffiti found around my local area as print inspiration for a project inspired by protest and rebellion. Throughout all of my projects, I have gained skill sets and experience that will help me in future projects and I believe that I can use these in everyday life as well, such as time management and problem solving. I prefer to work with visuals when collecting research as I can gain inspiration from the shapes and colours as well as it being easier for me to picture what my designs would look like. Aher my two years at college studying fashion and clothing, I have found CAD the most enjoyable as I am able to easily create and display my ideas and designs in a vibrant and clean way. This factor heavily influenced my university course options.

Megan Oliver I have always had a strong interest in fashion and studying it at a higher level has helped me find more specialised interests within the industry, such as fashion history and illustration. I have also always been interested in film and the film industry, which has led me to studying costume design at university as it’s a big cross over between the two. I enjoyed the shirt project I completed in second year, as I got to research brands and adapt my work to their target audience. Everything ive learned over the last 2 years studying fashion at college has helped inform my decision for university in September. Because of studying fashion full time and being surrounded by it, in my own time I have developed lots of new fashion related hobbies, such as crochet and collecting fashion and history books. Also in my spare time I have started creating clothes with vintage dress patterns off of ebay, which has been enjoyable and has taught me a lot about the change in how garments are constructed over the years.

Lily Isabelle Cole My name is Lily and I am a second-year Fashion student at York College, my route to this course was slightly different from most, having and studied Science before deciding to change direction and study what I was most inspired by, Fashion. From an early age, I was interested in clothes and their ability to enable people to express themselves without words. When I started the course, I was very interested in Japanese street style, whilst I am still interested in this genre, I have developed my taste and now take inspiration from top designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Marc Jacobs & McQueen. During the course, I have developed my skills in designing and creating garments. My FMP is my favourite piece of work using Alice in Wonderland as inspiration, exploring its surreal dream-like quality to inform my designs and I was able to use all the skills I had gained over the 2 years to create this mini collection.

Emily Haddington Since I can remember I desired to do fashion as a career choice, I feel that after this course and other things, my main desire is for fashion illustration or making the final garments. I studied fashion and art in high school and came into further education with a slight idea of what I wanted to do. I feel like this course is a great choice for people who want to go down the fashion route but aren’t fully decided on what. When I was in school, I enjoyed making the items that we did (basic bodice, pillowcase and a makeup bag), however when starting at York College I loved the more technical part of it. How zips work, different seams and hems, a variety of sleeves; this is what made me enjoy this course the most. My favourite part was redrawing/sketching in the technical parts into my sketchbook, like basic bodices or a revere collar. At the current moment I don’t have plans to go into further education. My current motive is to stay in employment at the moment.

Morgan Clarke After studying art and design, I progressed to fashion and clothing. This gave me some slight prior experience and knowledge of the art world. I had a great interest in fashion which is why I chose to do this course, and now I am aware of different designers, the process of creating a garment and the ins and outs of the designing world. Throughout the 2 years, I came to the decision that university wasn’t for me, I think this is partially because I think getting straight into the working world and gaining experience would be more beneficial for me. I would say I am more of a physical learner. So, I plan to apply for both jobs and apprenticeships that I am interested in. Overall, I have really enjoyed this course and it has given me a much deeper understanding of the fashion industry. It has been very helpful for me and my progression.

Millie Crinnion This course has truly taught me about the ins and outs of the fashion world. I now know how to fully construct garments to industry standard; the full process of design work and I have a whole load of new techniques and tricks under my belt! All whilst making some great friends. I feel much more experienced in the fashion word and ready to take on new opportunities! I plan to go on to full time employment within the fashion industry as I decided university wasn’t for me (at least not this year anyway). This course has taught me a lot and I am very thankful for it!

Lucy Adams I have learnt an outstanding number of important skills during my 2years on this course. When I first began, I had a love for fashion and was passionate about the subject. My technical and design skills were very limited due to the fact I had not studied art or textiles previously. During my fashion curse I have been able to achieve a much greater knowledge of fashion and trends and become much more forward thinking with my own ideas and style. My illustration and design skills have become much better from constant practice, particularly my pencil sketching is something I’m confident in. I have been able to expand my digital skills, becoming proficient in Photoshop and Illustrator. This course has helped me to understand my own personal style and develop that within my illustrations and designs

Morgan Jones I have decided to create a costume to be worn by ‘Alice’ in Tim Burtons adaptation of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. My garment is to be worn as Alice emerges from the Madhatter’s teapot. Alex Eichler-Davis My final major project is based on the different Alice in wonderland movie images. This includes the 2010, 1951 and 1939 version. I really liked the art style for the 1939 version. I looked at the art style of this film and this led me to looking at antiques playing cards and I experimented with printing techniques for the surface interest of my menswear collection.

LEVEL 3 UAL ART & DESIGN YEAR 1 UAL Art & Design Applied General Extended Diploma Level 3 This is an exciting course made up of inspirational projects which integrate many different approaches that enable students to study a wide range of Art and Design activities before specialising in the second year in one of the key areas of Fine Art, Graphics, Illustration, Photography, Fashion, Textiles and 3D Design. Through drawing projects and experimental workshops, students will experience a variety of new art and design media and techniques. This allows students to broaden their own visual experience so that they can make an informed choice of specialist area in their second year. Students will extend their art and design skills by working in printmaking workshops, photography studios, Apple Mac suites and 3D workshops. Throughout the programme there are educational visits to galleries, workshops, museums, exhibitions and places of specific interest to extend students awareness of the wide range of contemporary creative activity. Art and design history is an integral part of the qualification and supports the students work in the studios and workshops.
Abbie Richards I enjoy doing photography and taking photos of things. These are some of my pictures I have taken in previous projects and the other stuff is some work I have done from previous projects and I drew an eye because I was looking into my friends and family so I took photos of all of their eyes then I drew my own. We went to the etching room and each did our own etching piece and I enjoyed that.
Abi Warriner As part of my final project, I chose to create these two character design sheets to explore the proportions, expressions and personality of the characters through imagery alone. I decided to do this digitally so that it would look clean and have a consistent colour palette throughout, and I was also able to practise digital art in the process. I am really pleased with how they both turned out as they feel playful and lively, which is exactly what I wanted to convey. For future projects, I want to improve my digital art skills to create more detailed pieces. Next year, I will be completing the second year of the art and design vocational course, and from there I hope to study animation or illustration at university as I have a passion for storytelling and conveying that through art and visuals.
Alice Mayhew This is the front of my final major project which is a patchwork quilt. I made it to express my village Bishopthorpe, and show it. This is the back of my quilt. These are some line drawings I did of places in my village while standing in front of these scenes. Here is a photo I took in a series of photos. It is a still life of red objects including a book, some pencils and a red shirt. This is another one of my photos from the same series. They are some sweets on top of a book, which makes it look unusual and also fascinating.
Athena Trafford Hey! My Name is Athena and apart of my Final Major Project I did some Photography on Blue light and technology to express how we as people spend too much time on our phones and the internet as a whole and how it’s effecting us negatively. I am pleased with how these images turned out as I feel it conveys the message well that I wanted to explore. When it comes to future projects, I would like to explore more techniques and ways to improve my photography skills. Next year, I will be continuing on with the second year of the L3 Art and design course, and then continue to explore and expand my knowledge in art at a university or apprenticeship.
Beth Sayles Identical Twins - Books For my project I wanted to explore how society relies on perception to determine identity. I wanted to explore the minimal effort we put into perceiving others. I choose to use myself and my identical twin to do this. The books I made aim to show that as my twin and I have grown we have forged our own paths. That although we once where one, as time goes on, we grow into individuals. In my project I manipulated the visual language of specific colours to show our growth as we aged. When we were born, we were purple, as we grow, I become redder and Katie bluer. I chose red and blue to be our colours because when we where little my uniform was red hers was blue, now my hair is red and hers is blue, etc. Even though we continue to grow into individuals we are still connected by our past. The purple bonds of the helix that connect us will never be severed. Poster I made this poster to challenge the toxicity of stereotypes and question the viability of stereotypes in society.
Charlotte Hicks I am Charlotte Hicks, and I am doing the Art and Design Level 3 2-year course. I love fashion, graphic design and 3d art. I love drawing pencil sketches as I love how realistic they come out like the duck I have shown and the eagle which is less realistic. I also love simple pieces like line drawing and print making. For my second year I want to look into graphic design and fashion but leaning towards graphic design as I am interested in being a logo/branding designer.
Chloe Mcculloch I’m Chloe and I am studying art and design level 3 extended diploma. I decided to study art because I spend all of my spare time doing art and I want to pursue a creative career. After college I hope to become an apprentice for a tattoo shop to build up my experience and then hopefully open my own shop. Photo one This is my final piece for the project ‘data’. The piece represents the contrast between different peoples’ personalities. I collected data from friends to find out what kind of personality they have and used that data to create a piece like this. Photo two This page is from my sketchbook for the data project. This is an artist research page for jenny Morgan. I chose to explore jenny’s work because of her use of colours to represent emotions in her pieces. This was an idea I wanted to try. I painted two pieces inspired by her work. The blue represents sorrow and cold however red shows anger or love.

Chloe Thomas For my final piece, I chose to make a cage to show the effects of online grooming. I used my own experience to create visual language of my emotions during and after. The meaning behind my piece is that you feel that you are trapped in a cage in which every side is different which creates an illusion when looking through, This is to show how groomers use different identities to lure in vulnerable children and make them think they are a friend. On the inside of my cage is a small wire person which is hanging onto shredded text wrapped in clingfilm. The shredded text is there to show hidden text messages and words which are wrapped up in the back of your mind which is why they are in clingfilm as the mind is delicate like thin see through plastic. I used wire to make the body as a puppet which is attached to messages instead of strings this is because the groomer is controlling and can make you do whatever they ask.
Chloe Waterworth For my final piece, I’ve created a series of images that relate to gender issues and gender stereotyping. I wanted to communicate, through the use of visual language, that societies standards for gender are wrong and I was attempting to make a mockery of it all. I created this piece using photography and digital editing. I’m pleased with my outcome and I’m happy with the message it is sending. My singular image shows one of my photos in its development stage as I was testing out ways to use visual language to convey ‘femininity’.
Daisy Masciale I chose to study three journey’s, rural, urban and sleep. Collecting sounds images and materials from each for my data and creating a sensory room set up, using a projection of images through a laser cut of the sound waves I had collected as well as sensory balls with the different feelings of journey along the way. I really enjoyed creating an abstract interior piece that depicted a journey with a straightforward video. Being my last final major project, I wanted to create a piece with interior design-based finish as this is a field I aspire to work in the future and also enjoy.
Progressing to studying
I will be progressing next year from college to university and hopefully going to London Metropolitan to study interior architecture.
Daisy Wilkinson I wanted to collect and record all the comforts and joys of life. My exhibition was named “hygge” because that means looking at a moment which might be seen as irrelevant as special, charming or cosy. Like feeling the warmth of a cup of tea. I choose this as I’m a very optimistic happy person. I notice and appreciate lots of thing’s others might overlook and I wanted celebrate those things. I also chose it as I wanted to make something positive and make people smile. For the exhibition I didn’t just want people to look at something comforting but to comforted too. I have been exploring symbolising a feeling through colour and textures. So, I used lots of soft materials, gave people cake to eat as they went round and had parts where people could take photos with the tea set, I made out of blankets.

Next year I’m going to be doing the second year of L3 Art and Design specialising in Fine Art.

Devon Djoric The first two pictures are from my FMP where my theme was data and people, I focused on my house, family and memories. The last three are from my encounters projects where my theme was decay and I focused on natural vs man made materials, and how they cause problems in the environment. During the encounters project I learnt dry point printing and experimented with a different mixture of mixed media. In my FMP I learnt how to felt and learnt how to make tiles using clay, I also used my own photos/primary research to create collages.
Progressing to studying
Next year I will start my second year of the level 3 art and design course at York college and I will be specialising in mixed media/ fine art.
Ellie Green I am on the level 3 foundation diploma in Art and Design. The first image is a wall hanging from the project Encounters and my sub theme was Decay so I wanted to show the different processes of decay. The first process being how smoke has impacted on surfaces the second being rusting. To make this one I used rust nails etc to create some rust prints. Then the end one is to represent fungi. My other image is from my FMP which the theme was Data and my sub sub theme being personal data. I made a dress using patches of my own skin town heat transferred onto fabric then I had an image of saved, stored and deleted images projected onto it.
Evan Agar Currently, I’m a student at York college studying art and design(Level 3) and Ive grown a key interest in illustration and graphics. I’ve done digital art for quite some time now and made a series of illustrations as my final pieces In my course. Overall I’ve enjoyed yet I’ve learnt so far and I’m eager to learn more as I plan to go into higher education to study graphics design. I’d like to go to York University especially as the travel is far more convenient than anywhere else and it has the course I desire. I’ve already looked into the history of art, how colours alter the mood of a piece along with different media and I’m hoping to keep many doors open career wise by choosing Graphics design as it has a large range of jobs available.
Heather Burdon As part of my final major project I looked at the possessions people have in their bags and what that says about there personality’s. I used lino printing, collage and mixed media to produce bold images full of colour and energy. In future projects I want to look at the area of fine art more. Next year I will be progressing to the 2nd year of extended diploma in art. I want to specialise in fine art, and I want to develop my use of media and visual language.
Isaac Wallace As a part of my final project I chose to create 3 T-Shirts to explore the different perspective of people when going on the same journey, I decided to display this on T-Shirts so that the participants of this project could wear what others had seen on their own walk. I am very pleased as to how they have come out because they get the message across and the actual execution of the T-Shirts were done well so that the viewers could see the T-Shirts clearly. In the Future I would love to improve my photography skills to create a clearer picture. Next year I will be completing the second year of the art and design vocational course, I am currently interested in illustration, cartoons and graphic design therefore I will be specialising in graphics and illustration and I would be happy to join any of those industries in the future.
Jade Greenwood Art has always been a big part of my life and I’m so glad I went on to pursue it over some of my other passions/ hobbies. Coming onto this course has just reinforced that love and has allowed me to push myself and the medias I use to new levels. My final major project on data was based around the current personal events that are going on in my life as of the moment namely that of loss. Collecting data for this project was difficult at times but in the end, it was worth it as it allowed me to create a piece that not only, I felt represented what was happening in my life best but also something that someone else could potentially understand and apply their own meaning to. Majority of the work I make is with clay (like my two final pieces), acrylic paint, or using just biro and pencil. Ill be going into my final year of college next year although I am still uncertain as to what I’m wanting to specialise in as I have an interest in both sculpture, painting, and even print making. I know after college I want to go to university though or maybe even do a tattoo apprenticeship.
Jamie Thompson My final major project was about how life can influence someone’s music, for the final piece I created a collection of vinyl record style albums based on the divorce of someone in my life. Next year I am progressing in the Extended Diploma in Art and Design and specialising in fine art.
Karol Wrzesinska My work is about the LGBTQ+ free zone and the influence of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland. The shrine in the picture is a representation of me and the upset caused by the vilification by the church of LGBTQ+ community. The piece uses visual language to poke fun at the constructs of sexuality, tradition, religion and patriarchy. I’m from one of the LGBTQ+ free zones and wanted to show that even though the place I’ve been born and raised in is LGBTQ+ “free” I still exist. “Jesteśmy Ludżmi Nie Ideologia” means “We Are People Not An Ideology”
Katie Harrison I am an art student studying a level 3 extended diploma in art and design. I will be specializing in illustration or fine art in the future. I enjoy landscape art and character design and do most of my work in greyscale. My piece was inspired by data, more specifically the waste and effects that our shoes create. It was made using wire, bending and twisting it to create my own 3D shoes, paint, to speak about the ways are world is being affected by our waste and wood for the base, this piece took me two days to make. I wanted to make a piece that was teach the people who saw it and that would convey how bad our mass-production companies are for our planet.

Kate Peacock In this project I produced a final piece composed of an image transfer of the River Foss alongside a series of lino prints which I worked into using different techniques and materials. I experimented with weaving, lino printing, melting plastic and stitching. My main focus was pollution and displaying the damaging effects it is resulting in with data which I collected from several walks along the River Foss. I decided to concentrate on pollution as it is a global problem that is slowly been tackled yet there is still so much more that could be done. In the images displayed is my final piece as well as four techniques which I experimented with and developed for my initial ideas.
Progressing to studying I have decided to continue with the second year of the Level 3 Art and design vocational and will be specialising in fine art.
Kiera Bollon I am currently studying the Level 3 foundation diploma in art and design at York college. I decided to take this course because of my passion for art. Throughout the course I have experimented with a range of media and techniques and learnt new skills in the process. Here are some images of my final designs in which I’ve used graphic and illustration to communicate the message of my piece. My poster designs are part of my data project where I’ve used humour to create a comment on consumerism and our society’s behaviours and attitude. I’ve also included some images from my encounters project, demonstrating my exploration with line drawings and my final outcome. I really enjoyed exploring with the graphic side of things and using procreate to create my final designs in the data project. However, I would like to develop with illustration further as I love creating my own line and observational drawings using pen. In my second year I’d like to specialise in Graphics and Illustration.

Lauren Campbell-Leighton The first 2 pictures were of my Encounters project where my theme was decay and I looked into the removal of surfaces focusing on skulls as they are what is left after an animal has decay. I really enjoyed this project as I loved being able to experiment with different ways to make something look decayed and I learnt how do use dry point. The other photos are from my FMP which was connected to personal data so I looked into my family’s history of being in the military as my dad, grandads and great grandads were in the military. During this project I used a lot of mixed media like clay, lino, acrylic, pencil and more, I also used different materials and techniques and I learnt some new techniques such as felting, melting plastic and paper transferring.

Next year I will start my second year of the L3 Art and Design course at York College and I will be specialising in fine art/mixed media.
Liberty Bell-Saint My name is Liberty Bell-Saint, I currently study level 3 art and design at York College and I am currently in my 1st year of the course. The first and second image are from a double page spread of one technique which I thought looked so unique and satisfying. I chose to do this technique as I was trying to figure out ways of reconnecting people in my family. The third and fourth photos are of my digital images I created from using photographs I’ve taken. I like to add small details into a plain picture to enthesis the image a little more. I add details by adding lines to the jacket, hair and other smaller areas of people from the images. However sometimes the small details aren’t noticeable.
Lily Holmes I’m Lily and I did year 1 of art and design lvl 3. I wanted to study art because I’ve always been interested in it and I wanted to do it after my sister did the same course. I enjoy painting and collage the most, usually doing portraits, which is why I decided to do portraits/ collages for my 3 final outcomes. For the next year, I’m seeking employment. For my 3 final outcomes, I did 3 separate portraits of me from ages 4-9, 10-14, and 15-17. In the backgrounds I included collages of different pictures of my family, friends, and my interests at the time. For my 4th piece of work, I did an artist response to Rankin Destroy where I photocopied a photo of me 4 times and painted ontop of them, cut them into pieces, stuck/painted bits on, cut bits off, etc. For this piece I tried to display an emotion for each photo using colour and visual language.
Lilly Lofthouse My project was surrounding the fears us as humans have of insects and why (from my perspective) we shouldn’t have to be afraid of them. For my piece, I was heavily inspired by Louise Bourgeois’s sculpture famously known as maman. I used a variety of materials such as wire, which I bended into shape to create my miniature maman, card to create a setting and finally ink and pen to illustrate the city. I wanted to capture something ‘scary’ which is why after holding a questionnaire I chose a spider. However, I wanted my piece to have deeper meaning, in my piece the spider seems to be attacking the man but in fact the spider is actually just trying to be friendly. My piece has a deeper meaning as I believe this is how we see bugs. Specifically spiders, when most people see them they’ll exaggerate saying they’re huge when they’re actually not that big.

Next year I’m planning on doing my second year of L3 art and design and I’m going to be specialising in Graphic Communication.
Lily Staniforth I decided to take the course art and design at York college as I knew this was the field I wanted to study in the future. Throughout this course I have experimented with different techniques and media, and for my final pieces I have used sculpture and illustration to communicate the themes of poverty and data use. I enjoyed working with clay and different materials for the models that I made, however after looking at illustration I know I want to continue experimenting with this as I enjoy creating line and observational drawings, as well as using watercolour. Overall in the second year and at university I would like to specialise in illustration.
Maegan Cook My FMP project was connected to journeys and I was looking at the impact people and nature have on the River Ouse near to where I live in the month of March. Every week I produced 3 unique pieces from the data collected based on a formal element (texture, line, colour, sound, and patten). I analysed and sourced materials that were available and used new and old techniques. A lot of my work was experimental, and I learnt some new techniques such as cyan printing and transfer printing. My final piece was a mixed media installation combining all of my work to date but including video and sound. This might not quite get across in the image I have submitted.

Megan Bain These photos are from my final major project i decided to do the topic ‘the effects of ageing on the skin’ and for my finally piece i created an abstract piece breaking down the data of ageing on the skin into its simplest form by plotting the blemishes and wrinkles on a grid that appear on my families faces.
Molly Armstrong In the data project we were asked to research different themes and how data is involved in them. In the end, I decided to focus my project on collections and data because I enjoy shoes and I knew that I could use my enjoyment for shoes and incorporate that into my final major project.
Knowing that I wanted to focus on shoes in my project, I experimented in many ways towards the end of the final major project. Firstly, I thought I wanted to make a 3d piece. However, I decided to change my idea and do a painting based on the work of Andy Warhol.

Mya Moyser My art throughout this project was to create data around drugs and the effect they have on people , I later developed this into addiction and the how it causes people to be. My final piece shows the need for the drugs and the need for the love validation that the addiction overpowers that can destroy lives. This topic is very meaningful to me as I have seen people become addicts and loose themselves thought out the years that I have been able to understand this. I hope that my piece can show a very strong meaning to the person that is looking at my work.
Olivia Stokes-Roberts I am a hard-working person who is very passionate about art and works best in a creative environment. I am an organised, caring person who enjoys tackling new challenges and problem-solving. I enjoy illustration, designing and making jewellery as well as experimenting with different styles and techniques. It is my love for designing and illustration that interests me to do graphic design at University, not before moving on to do an extended diploma in art and design next year. In my most recent project, I chose ‘plastic pollution’ as my theme because I wanted to explore a topic that was so important and enjoyed the challenge of addressing such a prominent issue. I am really happy with how my project turned out, I feel it delivered a clear message about plastic pollution and I learned a lot about designing and creating a final piece which is informative and impactful.

Phoebe Taylor In this project I wanted to visualise and evoke interest in what its like to live with paranoid schizophrenia to spread awareness of its severity. My project is called “reality” because suffering with paranoid schizophrenia can often cause the person to loose touch with reality and can therefore effect their daily life. I chose this theme as I’ve always had an interest in mental disorders and my sister who helped a lot with this project fuels my interest with stories of real people with these disorders. I find the way I’ve seen other people online talk about suffers talk about them in a demeaning and judging manner causing me to assume they know little about what it’s like to suffer with this disorder. To present this I decided the best method would be through contrast so I made two pieces. One is reality for people without ps and the other is what people with ps often imagine reality to be. To further this contrast I explored visual language and used my research into the disorder to visualise aspects of it.

Tom Botting I decided to study full-time art and design because I had no doubt that this was the field I wanted to get into. The course encouraged me to experiment in new art forms and I have found my passion and what I hope to carry into a career- fashion photography. The work I have displayed are from my ‘Encounters’ project where I explored mental health and how to communicate that through fine art and fashion/ portrait photography. I find that many projects investigating mental health go about it in a cliché way, so I hope these pieces of work offer a fresh perspective.
Progressing to studying Next year, I will be going into my second year at York College where I hope to further my understanding of fashion photography and then pursue it at university the following year.
Vivien Szakacs I am a talented, passionate, and hardworking art student who enjoys working and exploring with different types of art materials/ techniques. I am good at crafts especially with 3D but also, I am a quick learner and open minded for any new art skills. Furthermore, I can remain focused and always give 100% to every given work. The project is called data and within this project I decided to focus on emotions because I wanted to show reality, truth, and honesty. With this project I have explored fine art, designing plus 3D, and I really loved experimenting new techniques within this project. Overall, within the project a came across many challenges because these skills are indeed new to me but as I am a quick learner, I eventually learned the skill. As for next year I am planning to go onto year 2 of extended diploma in art and design.

This is my final project to finish off my first year of my graphic design course. This project put a lot of pressure on me because this was the project that counted a lot to my final grade. I wish I had more ideas come to mind when doing my final thumbnails because I feel like I could have done a lot more with my work. However, this project presents me as it is very colourful and bright, and the topic is something that’s needs a lot more awareness and needs to be spread across the world with a lot more confidence.

Al.Smith For this project I decided to have my work revolve around a combination of my own style as well as other artists to portray the chosen topic I selected. I developed a style using shading and colour techniques until I was satisfied with my final product, I created multiple “Test Pages” to show my style evolving and changing from start to finish of my project. Additionally, I researched past historical events to do with Samurai as I decided to create a factual piece that draws the readers in and gives them a variety of interesting knowledge on the culture and past/ present. Finally, I also tried multiple medias to show. A variety of work that portrayed the Samurai in multiple lights and really made my audience understand the gruesome backstory and mentality of being a samurai, the practices, the rules to follow, the weaponry and armoury as well as the power.
Progressing to studying I will be moving on to the second half of my college course, completing my next and final year of Graphic Design.
Emelia Asbury My name is Emelia and I am in first year at college. I have enjoyed the past year because all the projects have been interesting. I especially liked the Sea project we did first because I really enjoyed doing logo design and sort of creating my own business. I designed the logo of the fish and the menu design next to it. I went for a Japanese style with the Koi and the Blossom Tree as it was for a Sushi restaurant. Throughout the project we had to look into other logo designs of similar restaurants. For example, I was doing a high end restaurant so for my research I looked at high end logo designs. This helped me because it gave me ideas for colour schemes and other basic design elements. I wanted to make my design simple but till quite pretty. I went for sort of in the middle of detailed and basic for my final pieces.
Anuwat Nacey I am a young graphic designer that, before starting the college course, had no previous experience with anything to do with art. Since starting the course, I have been learning so many new things and got the gist of everything pretty quickly. At first, it was all confusing and I had no idea on how to start for my first project, but now I have many ways on how to get ideas to start a project. For 2 out of 3 of my projects, I focused on sports because I am more comfortable with sports, than the other themes I had ideas for. I mainly focused on basketball because I am obsessed with everything to do with basketball, the NBA, NBA players, basketball shoes, NBA games, college basketball and I love playing basketball myself. My projects only turned out well because of my good knowledge of basketball and sports.

I am looking for other courses, but I am most likely sticking to graphic design for my second year at college.
Bailey Camerin My name is Bailey Camerin and I’m studying Graphic design at York College on a level 3 course. I previously took Art and Design Technology at GCSE at Woldgate College, in my art course I mainly aimed my work towards architecture and my design and technology was mainly aimed at product design. I enjoyed art a lot more than tech because I enjoyed drawing different architecture. In my second year at college I will be continuing on with the same Graphic design course that I’ve been doing this year. I enjoy graphic design because its something different every project.

Cameron Neal For this project I decided to use Formula 1 as my Focus as it is something that I follow with great interest both the real sport and I am involved in unofficial esports events to do with it as well. Due to this I obviously already know a large amount about the sport already, this made research much easier as I had a better idea of which parts of the sport could be translated into the project instead of blindly researching loads of general information that isn’t relevant. I decided to produce a poster that advertises a Grand Prix to hardcore fans of Formula 1, this was something I decided to do as I could include information that I know I would want to see where I wouldn’t know what a person who doesn’t care much about anything but the race itself would want to see.

Next Year – I plan to continue onto the second year of my course (graphic design)
Charlie Bean I am a student at York College studying level 3 graphic design. For my final piece I decided to make an engaging weather app for kids. I Decided to do this as when I was conducting research for weather apps, I noticed a gap in the industry. This gap was weather apps that were directed at kids. However, I knew kids wouldn’t be overly interested in the weather and forecasts so I had to make it fun, colourful and most of all engaging with games and other interactive features throughout the app. I also wanted to have a main feature that the audience could interact and engage with. So, after some research of kid’s apps, I thought I could incorporate a customizable avatar. I got this idea of other kid’s apps like games and educational apps. Most of these avatars were people or children, however I liked the look of simple geometric shaped avatars. With maxing that with weather I came out with simple body shapes like a raindrop, cloud, etc.
Dan Carr I like doing my work in a digital format using illustrator and photoshop. Instead of using standard methods like paint a print making, I work with a clean design typealways finshing off with bold colours and making a design or basic sketch and making my work look as realistic as possible. After making a design or sketch I will always refer to the real life drawing and check that the building looks the same from first glance. I would say my art style is realistic in terms of what I draw but always add a comic theme over the top to make it more child friendly I will be continuing into the 2nd year of my graphic design course hopefully creating. Hopefully creating better designs than I did in the first year.

My name is Declan Booth-Hudson and right now I’m studying level 3 Graphic design course. My favorite type of work is graffiti and street art because most good pieces can light a building up and some can push a power message which I think is really strong. I like graphic design because each “job” is different one day you could be designing a logo for a drinks company the other day you can be designing a billboard for a phone company. Next year I plan to go onto a second years as I’m really enjoying the course.

Ellie Colman I am a first year graphic design student and I think this course so far has taught me a lot about the skills I need and helped me develop my existing skills. Here is my final piece from the project data, I created a map for York based on the theme of horror and ghosts. I decided to create a themed map as I realised lots of the maps which already exist for York are very similar, just showing all the usual tourist attractions. This map is aimed mainly at families who want a more unique visit around York, it contains a geographical map and hand drawn illustrations which look just like the locations. I think its suitable for families as there is something for everyone one, for example there is spooky information for the children and adults and the route is already planned so the adults can have a relax.

Next year I am going to continue this course into the second year.
Ellie Dundas For my final major project I chose to focus on fitness and nature as I thought it would be an interesting topic to combine.I chose to do a fitness campaign and create a series of posters and a logo to promote people ages 25+ to get back into fitness. My favourite way to work is digital as I can scan in hand drawn work and still keep the textures from paints etc.I like this way of working as it makes your work look more personal and less crisp\formal.I’m happy with the graphics course I chose as I’ve gotten to learn new skills such as making a postive and also learn new softwares such as indesign.I feel like this course has set me up for the future as I now know how to create a final piece and the process that gets me to this point.I’ve also learn’t how to present my work in different forms such as sketchbooks and powerpoints.

I am staying on at college next year to do a second year in graphic design. Once I have finished at college I am going to look into apprenticeships and universities to study graphics or architecture.
Erin Draper For my final piece I decided to make some packaging because it was one of the projects I wanted to do the most, and thought it would be good for my final piece. I designed a chocolate bar wrapper for a small company called Chocolarder. I chose them because I like what they stand for and what the company is about. They feel strongly for fair trade ingredients and sustainable packaging, there for I based my research and FMP on ensuring this was included. The theme of data was also the main brief of this project, I included this by showing where the coco beans had come from, and used the map of the place. Considering I enjoyed the first year of the course I will be going on to do the second year. After I have finished the course I might consider an apprenticeship or looking for work, hopefully related to graphics.
Etienne Collinson I am a Graphic Design student and have currently finished Year 1 of my L3 Graphic Design course. Before starting this college project I had done GCSE Art and design at secondary so I had a bit of a background in Art. Although I had a background in Art I have learnt a lot from this course so far such as different techniques and media. My final major project was about deforestation and how we are destroying animal habitats by cutting down trees. I really enjoyed this project because we had a lot of freedom with what we could do and what our final piece would be. I ended up re-designing an online article about deforestation. I have really enjoyed the course as a whole and I will be transferring all my skills learnt into the future.
Progressing to studying
Next year I will be carrying on and doing the second year of the Graphic Design course.
Grace Ellwood I am currently on the graphic design course, I am extremely glad that I did this course as it has given me lots of opportunities for the future as I have learnt many more techniques of how to produce a final piece. My favourite process is screen printing as I love how the final outcome turns out. I used screen printing in my FMP as it gives texture and makes your work look professional. I chose to focus on how global warming effects polar bears for my Final Major Project as it is a very sad topic which I wanted to make aware, whilst also illustrating it to make it look fun in the hope people would look at my designs. My target market was 20 plus as I believe the younger generation are the reasons why global warming is happening which is why we need to try and stop it.
Progressing to studying I will be continuing on with the second year on this course.
Harry Jones My work is very childish and fun I make a point of adding a lot of colour and mix media to make a project fun and interesting. I love media which is aimed at a target market of children because of this reason. when designing I make a note to make a small colour scheme with use of complementary colours and colours that will add contrast making the audience interested in my work. I love cartoons and Disney films. this really reflect on my work with the facial features I like to make the eyes large to add a friendly look to the different characters. I am also interested in type and designing my own type face to add personality to my work since I make my titles hand generated to personalise my work and make my work fun. I usually don’t just work with vectors instead I like to scan things in and make my work seem as though it’s almost a collage of work. Harry Walters I’m a first-year student attending York College, I’ve always been fond of illustrations and looked forward to starting this course at the beginning of the year. The Proposal given to us was including the term “Data” and with this I came up with the idea of producing a number of posters using the association of music and how different genres of music effect different people individually through sensations and feelings. The categories of music I selected include, “Classical Music”, “Sad Tunes” and “Hip Hop”. I created imagery associated with these genres after conducting studies through data collection and surveys. The overall essence of these select genres and capturing it through digital format where my overall focus. I am thoroughly impressed with my three outputs as the immense amount of research and effort put into them show throughout.

Heaven Bilbrough Personally, I love imagery that is quite odd, unique and bold so my goal with most of my work is to create something that reflects these qualities. I feel as if my final project in particular represented this as my goal was to create a collection of posters that were both informative yet eye-catching and colourful. The theme of my final major project was connecting with people, initially I chose this theme as there is many different ways that people can connect with each other e.g. different cultures, shared interests, hobbies. I chose to go down the path of social media for my FMP as social media is growing at extreme rates and especially now with lockdown and covid-19 where people haven’t been able to see each other in person for months, things such as facetime and apps like Instagram and snapchat have become increasingly popular. Overall, I’m very proud of how this project turned out.
Progressing to studying
After the first year I plan to carry onto the second year of college. I will look into apprenticeships as that’s what I think I would prefer to do after college.
Jack Taylor I am currently on the graphics design course, and I am really enjoying it. I think this course has allowed me to develop many different skills that I wouldn’t have done on any other course. The technique that I have enjoyed learning the most would probably be screen printing. For my FMP I decided to create a poster based around social media and how It can affect mental health. I aimed my poster for ages 16+ as I think these are the ages that are affected by this issue the most. I created my poster digitally as this is my favourite way to work because you can scan hand drawn illustrations and still keep the textures. I think that using illustrator is very good for layouts as you can constantly change the design. I think that this course has set me on the right track to find a good job in the future.
Progressing to studying I will be continuing onto the next year of this course.
Janis Draper I’m a graphic design student currently studying at York college in my first year on a level 3 course, I have previously taken Art as a GCSE in Fulford secondary school, I also took a graphic design course which was mainly aimed at product design. I have previously done many projects within the area of art and design that have been complicated or sometimes self-explanatory, I enjoyed a lot of the projects that I had been set before college but the ones in college where definitely more fun with myself becoming a lot more experimental with all my work. There’s a lot of work and effort to go into the subject of graphic design but it is all enjoyable and I really want to learn more for the future, I plan on heading into character game design it would be ideal for the way I work and what I like.
Nicolas-Evan Hartz I am currently ending my first year of Graphic Design at york college and had previously studied fine art at GCSE level. Prior to studying Graphic Design in college, I mostly worked in a manga inspired artstyle, often sticking to traditional mediums and character designs but this course encouraged me to step out of the comfort zone I had created and helped me to realise my passion for digital arts and animation. The variety in projects and outcomes we have studied on this course so far furthered my love for art and have allowed me to experiment with my art much more than I had done previously and has made my artwork much more enjoyable for myself and my audience. Next year I plan on continuing on this course and upon completion I intend to study animation and/or illustration at an art university.

Romina Nunnari In this project I have taken the term ‘Data’ and chose to explore the damaging effects of Air Pollution on our everyday lives and the planet itself. Pollution is destroying our world and a great percentage of the global population are not aware of the effects and consequences of their actions. My aim was to create awareness posters representing the devastating effects and I have done that. I have created a set of three posters, which is more efficient than a singular poster, which represents the top 3 contributors to Air pollution – Agriculture, Deforestation, Power Plants. I used a monochrome colour palette on each individual poster and added an eye-catching title, and if people want to look for more information, they can look at the website with I have listed on each poster. I am very proud of myself for achieving what I had set out to do.
Progressing to studying
For my progression, I am going to carry on with my graphic design next year and continue on to year 2.
LEVEL 3 UAL GRAPHIC DESIGN YEAR 2 This is an exciting course made up of inspirational projects which integrate many different approaches to Graphic Design. There are live briefs set by companies and industry professionals and workshops which teaches students a wide range of Graphic Design skills, allowing them to explore many pathways within the specialism. We have an excellent staff team who cover a wide range of specialisms on this exciting, fast moving course. Through projects and experimental workshops, students will experience a variety of new graphic art and design media techniques to broaden their own visual experience within the following areas: • Graphics • Printmaking • Illustration • Digital Imaging • Animation • Typography • Drawing • Layout Throughout the programme there are educational visits to galleries, workshops, museums, exhibitions and places of specific interest to extend students awareness of the wide range of contemporary creative activity.
Alisha Harper For the FMP we were given the theme of ‘Curious Alice’. I’ve always loved playing video games and thought this would make a unique project so decided to animate a character’s moveset for my outcome. For most of the previous projects on the course, I have chosen to incorporate animation into the outcome since this is my biggest area of interest. After careful consideration, I decided to go with a loose illustration style so that I could focus on creating an energetic movement like the traditional 2D animations that inspired me. I spent a lot of time drawing from life which gave me a firm foundation to build upon and ultimately made my animation more realistic. I hope to build on the skills I have learnt throughout the past 2 years on this course when I take my next step studying animation at university.

Amy Tegetmeier For my FMP I created a few cards based on ‘Magic the Gathering’ these where themed off ‘Alice in wonderland’ I was interested in the card game, so it was fun to try implement Alice into the game. As you can see from my imagery that I was very fond of playing around with the character Cheshire cat and throughout the project I played around with the design a lot. My progression to me has really shown in this last project as I have put a lot of effort into the design and the look of each sheet/page to me this was what made my work my work as I like doing the scruffy but tiny touches into my pages. In the project I used a lot of different imagery but a lot of media using screen print a lot to show a few of my characters but in different styles.

Angel Glasper I really enjoy comics and illustration, especially with aesthetics mixing creepy and cute things together. The fmp theme was Alice in Wonderland, so I was able to go all out in making something bizarre and unsettling. I played with the narrative and quotes from the real story to make my own twisted version set in a post-apocalyptic world, where Alice has to navigate her way through wonderlands trials to find her sister. Now that I’ve had a chance to make this comic in college I feel like I can better make a more personal comic in the future, which has been a long term goal for a while. It’s been really fulfilling seeing my work from my earlier projects vs this one; I had worked a lot with eerie subject matter such as witched, sea monsters and ghosts, so seeing how my skills have developed over the two years is amazing. Next year I’m focusing on personal art projects and working.

Beth Nesham For my final major project I chose to design an ad campaign for an Alice in wonderland themed festival because I thought this would be a very fun and creative thing to design. At the beginning of my research my concept was mainly focused on the costumes and activities that could be held there for the festival goers. Further down the line of my project I began developing ideas for my imagery using various media and materialsfor example this collage piece of the queen of hearts; the face was cut from a magazine which featured lady gaga and each petal was cut from different shades of red card to shape her hair full of roses. By this point I decided on clarifying my music choice more clearly being rock music. This took my project in a hole other direction where my outcomes looked more dark and gothic, I drew this digital queen of hearts stenciled off my collage piece and used her in my final pieces featured on my social media ad and my logo on my festival ticket.

Dan Scott The theme for my final major project was Alice in Wonderland and I interpreted this theme by redesigning main character’s and fitting them into an adventure, fantasy genre video game. I created three separate illustrations that show cased some of the characters you can play as in the game. Character design is something that I really enjoy, and I wanted to incorporate this into my FMP in any way possible. As well as creating character designs for my FMP, I will also be creating lots of designs in the future at Bristol UWE where I will be studying illustration. With college’s help, I was able to create consistent projects of really good quality as well as experiment with materials I haven’t been able to use before such as screen printing, 3d models and life drawing with models.
Progressing to studying University of the West of England: BA (Hons) Illustration
Emily Sneesby I chose to create a graphic novel based on the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party scene from the given theme of Alice in Wonderland. Wanting to heavily incorporate illustration into my project, I chose a graphic novel as my final outcome since they are also an area of illustration I am interested in pursuing as a career. And thus wanted to learn more about the format, conducting primary research from my own collection of graphic novels, comics, children’s books and art and design theory books. This project allowed me to research, explore and experiment with surface pattern, typography, panelling, story boarding, pagination, character design and colour theory, all of which I enjoyed immensely and I love how the graphic novel format allows me to bring all these areas of design together into one outcome. I will definitely be working on more self-initiated graphic novel and comic projects in the future, possibly even continuing on the Alice and Wonderland theme to create an extended collection.

Imogen Howe For my Final Major Project, I produced a zine to portray my own visual take on Alice in Wonderland. My approach to the brief included clashing patterns, vibrant, neon colours and playful typographic layout. I was heavily inspired by The Mad Hatter, Tim Burton’s version played by Johnny Depp, in particular. I took elements of his orange hair and his clashing patterned costumes and used them in my final piece. In this project I challenged myself to use media I hadn’t used before, like screen-printing and letterpress, as a result of this I have found two new processes that I really enjoy and can’t wait to use in the future. All of my zine has elements of screen-print and letterpress. I physically screen-printed two out of twelve pages neon green; this was the only way I could achieve a true neon effect. In September 2021, I will start the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at Leeds Arts University. I am excited to take forward my current Graphic Design knowledge as well as learn new skills and techniques, I also look forward to finding new inspiration and meeting new people in the process.

Madison Wright My final major project work was very exciting to produce, as our class was given the theme of “Alice in wonderland” to focus on. I am someone that is heavily inspired by familiar themes in this story, such as fantasy, good vs bad, and nonsensical imagery and writing. Especially being very into the idea of lore, and storytelling, I believe it helped me excel in choosing what to create for my own final product. With a lot of consideration, I chose to write and illustrate a second “Jabberwocky” poem, that gave more depth to the character. Learning new skills such as bookbinding and lino printing at college, helped me to achieve a fully illustrated poem inside an Accordion style book. I put a lot of effort into lino cutting and printing each image by hand, so I can happily say I am quite proud of it. Next year, I will be taking a 3-year Illustration course with the University of Plymouth. I’m excited to study away from home, with the comfort of living beside the sea. I’m thankful to York college for helping me improve my social and creative skills for these past two years and putting me where I am now.

Maiya Needley For this year’s final major project, I chose to specialise in photography and styling as this has become more of an interest to me over the course of the year. When thinking about my take on the project, I really liked how the novel ‘Alice’s adventures in Wonderland’ is so universally known and that so many generations have grown up knowing the story well. From this, I decided that I wanted the audience to feel some sort of nostalgia from viewing my photographs. I achieved this hazy, dream-like effect in my images by shooting through a sheet of plastic. This caused light to reflect off of it whilst also creating a slight blur over the portraits. Next year, I plan to study Fashion Art Direction at Manchester Metropolitan which will involve styling and doing the photography for photoshoots, as well as considering how others consume fashion, whether that being wearing it themselves, or seeing garments in magazines.
Morgan Leigh Me and my artwork is heavily inspired by the media I enjoy such as video games and graphic novels which have fuelled my passion for art. One of the aspects I enjoy the most in art is character design and concept art which is what inspired me to create a book with my own Alice in Wonderland inspired creature designs inside, I did lots of research into the world of Alice in Wonderland looking at several adaptations of the story and its characters to give me ideas on how to create new yet familiar takes on already existing themes. Many of the character designs I created for my FMP went through a long process of refining till I got the look I was happy with, I really enjoy this way of working and creating my own versions of pre-existing characters was lots of fun especially seeing them all together in one book at the end of the project.

Noah Hooton For my FMP I created a piece based of the given theme of ‘Curious Alice’ and something I was interested in. The concept I decided on was a record sleeve that focused on the psychedelic side of ‘Curious Alice’. This was something I enjoyed creating as I am someone who enjoys music especially from the 60s. I am also very happy with how it turned out as I believe it fits to the theme as well as the idea I was trying to create. Overall college has helped me develop my view on Graphic Design and helped me move on with how I create my work as well as how to develop towards the final piece. This has helped me to feel prepared and confident to move forward into university and ready to develop my skills even more.

Olivia Clarke When creating my FMP the aim was to create a image based look-book filled with a series of images that had been cut into and edited. With the theme of Alice in Wonderland i felt that i could take my ideas in a number of directions. An imaginative theme such as Alice in Wonderland enabled me to experiment with my ideas and push new boundaries in creative art and photography. I utilised the fashion design of friends. We held a number of photoshoots in a numerous locations, from woods to urban landscapes. The location factor prompted me to test further graphical and media ideas. The success of my project was my in depth research and my ability to test new methods and ideas before reaching my final piece of work, it was an enjoyable process and i am pleased with my final design and ideas. I am exited to take away what i have learnt over the last two years with me to university.

Simon Xu What I did for my project is a graphic novel with Alice being portrayed in the sci-fi genre. The reason for my decisions was because I enjoy reading graphic novels and I felt like changing Alice’s genre into something different will make it more fun while also giving an opportunity for me to add ideas that makes it more personal. With my experience from my other projects, I feel like I needed to do more research and manage my time for this project. A couple of different concepts and inspirations blend together to make what my final piece look like in the end however, my plans were cut due to the time so no colour can be implemented in the pages. For next year, I am taking the extended foundation year as I can get more practice and learn new skills from different project.
Vivien Zala For my FMP, l decided to hand make my own flowers out of paper with the mix of my own colours, to portray the idea of the painted florals from Alice in Wonderland. My concept is a florist lookbook that promotes my one-of-a-kind flowers that can be used as home decor or as gifts. Following the completion of my past projects, I believe I have developed skills in all areas of design, including handcrafting various aspects or just applying my digital skills, which gave me a strong base for the upcoming years of university.

Woody Nairn In my FMP I wanted to take a subject matter that interested me personally and also fitted with the Alice in wonderland theme. This was characters, this way I would be able to better focus on my project and have more excitement for it. After having spent my last 2 years focused on graphic design, I was ready for the challenge and used a digital media illustration style as it was the style that I had previously had the most success with. I feel like I set myself up well for the project with my research, development and experimentation. These past years at college have taught me a huge amount of traditional and digital skills to help me in my further endeavours.

Anonymous I love being a creative individual and this is shown throughout my unique designs and practical work. When in the design stage I love taking into consideration the materials that would work best with the designs but also the materials I enjoy working with. These materials consist of glass, wood and metals. The reason behind this is that I enjoy working with the processes within these materials to create an outcome that fits the brief but also expresses my talent and creativity. The photos displayed here show off my final major project for this year. In this I incorporated all the techniques I like along with my chosen materials, another reason why I chose these materials is that I wanted to keep my final piece as natural and sustainable as possible

Caitlin Scott My final major project concept was on animal behaviours, from there I researched all kinds of animals and their own unique behaviours. I found my section on mole rats particularly interesting and it was my main source of inspiration. I knew I wanted to make a sculpture as my final piece but I didn’t want it to just be a realistic mole rat as I thought that would be boring. I came up with an idea to combine the most important features of different animals to create a hybrid. My final piece is a hybrid of a mole rat (body, head), a bat (wings) and a Wahne’s parotia bird (colour scheme of the wings). Each feature I chose from the animals are all integral to their survival in the world.

Kadie Warriner While being a student on the first year of 3D Design Craft I have learnt a variety of news skills and techniques which helped me create my final piece. My favourite material to work with is wood and metal, this is because you can make a variety of abstract and unique pieces. My FMP concept for this project was data. I researched into types of data and what we use it for. From this It led on to looking into science and DNA which then formed and created my final piece. The reason I chose to use wood is because wood itself has its own form of DNA which led nicely into my theme. My table legs were inspired by the DNA helix as I loved the shape and intricacy. And the tabletop shape and pattern came from an image of a plants DNA which had been micronized.

Ronan Leathley I am a Level 3 Extended Diploma 3D Design Craft student. The theme of the final major project was Data and from the theme, I focused on prosthetics. I then began research and initial design ideas getting mind maps mood boards and artists research etc. I got inspiration from research on artists that focused on the body and expression and while none of them exclusively focused on prosthetics they focused on struggles of expression with the human body. For my final piece I made a plaster hand cast book end and crockery set that represented the eye and hand part of the body parts of the body most commonly associated with prosthetics.

Rory Bell I am a level 3 3D Design Crafts student at York college. The theme for my final major project was data. I developed on this and my personal/sub theme was sound. After researching various areas of sound and data I developed the design of a small desktop guitar. The inspiration I got from this initially came from my guitars at home and the shape of sound waves. I created this using wood resin and led lights. In my FMP a few things went wrong during production such as the neck on guitar kept breaking but I got around this by reattaching it using a dowel, even though there were challenges in making the piece I am happy with what I have created.

Summer Nicholson-Hume I am studying Level 3 Extended Diploma 3D Design Craft at York College. For this unit our theme was DATA, and from this I became interested in the concept of revealing data, or data revealing truth. taking me to the concept of autopsy/ anatomy. I thought of many ideas surrounding this theme, but one in particular stuck with me. Inspired by the recent passing of my nana and to pay homage to her and her cremation, I created a piece of bespoke jewellery inspired by Alexander McQueen’s ‘Savage Beauty’ using support screw and back brace pieces from her spine. Due to the pieces being made from titanium they survived the cremation, and I was able to create a beautiful necklace to honour her by.

Tom Dennis As a 3D Design Craft student, I found the entire course particularly enriching and educational. It really sparked my creativity and imagination, learning about so many different styles and artists was enlightening. After experimenting with a verity of different media I really found a passion for ceramics throughout the course and decided to focus, my final major project around ceramics. Given the topic ‘Data’ I decided to focus it on the great depression and unemployment, making figurines represent unemployed people as a way to bring awareness to the issue of unemployment.

Amelia Woolveridge Plants have always been a massive passion of mine, from a seed to a living organism. I suppose that botany in general has fuelled my creative inspirations into my own individual designs. I love to incorporate things that are associated with botany because it not only portrays my love for plants, but it also showcases my thought process and ambitions throughout my work. I am currently studying Extended Diploma 3D Design Crafts and I am hoping to extend my life goal of an urban designer by studying Horticulture at Askham Bryan in September this year. During my projects, the main media that I enjoy working with is ceramics. I tend to find working with clay very relaxing and therapeutic not to mention the endless possibilities that clay possesses. For my FMP of this year, I produced a variety of clay pots in which the rims appeared jagged, I took inspiration from the body of an hedera helix (ivy) leaf. I then intertwined copper wire through the holes that I extruded through the clay and attached pierced copper ivy leaves that had green enamel on the front to resemble a real ivy leaf and vines, this outcome did not only resemble my individual work, but it also showed my personal views of botany and what it has to offer.

Emmelyn Riley As a 3D artist, my favourite mediums to work with so far have been ceramics and fibre art. I enjoy making models and creating characters. I have found these two mediums work well for this. I like the freedom clay gives me to quickly build up a structure and how it is possible to create various textures. Recently, I have experimented with needle felting and really enjoyed the soft appearance and the way it is possible to create quite intricate detail. The theme for my Final Major Project was ‘Dreams and the Unconscious Mind’. For this project, I made four needle felted models with adjustable limbs, as well as a fiery backdrop. This set was inspired by a combination of dreams I had. I think that dreams are like films. You can watch them in your head, and I enjoy how random and unpredictable they are. I wanted this project to prepare me for my chosen university course of model making for film and TV.

Isla May Sneddon I am a 3D design craft student. I enjoy working in the jewellery workshop, particularly with silver, and silversmithing processes. My FMP was based around the Isle of Mull, a beautiful island off the west coast of Scotland. I looked at the textures and shapes of the borders of the island, as well as the sea and the land, and how organic and rough it is. I showed this through reticulation of my silver and used silver scraps on the surface of my piece for additional texture. I added in a hexagon shape, which I took from the basalt rock columns of Staffa, an uninhabited island accessed by boat from Mull. After doing my texturing I used liver of sulphur on the groves of my piece to add emphasis to the shapes.
Jason Bowers Cox As a student I am mostly pulled towards working in wood and metal materials, working in the genres of jewellery and small sculptural, presentation pieces. My work aesthetic is very niche, I certainly look more towards the smaller audiences that’d strangely be looked over and sadly missed out when a potential product or design could have full potential to appeal and make a hefty profit. My final major project consisted of using the aesthetic of everyday tools and applying them to a jewellery practicality. I think I’d executed this very well. I like what my project has come out with and think that it’s a considerable product for the right consumers, hopefully my project has reached out to this smaller audience. Next year I’m looking to join the fire brigade, although with regards to higher education or universities etc, I’ve received three unconditional offers from Cardiff metropolitan, Bangor and Leeds becket, and two conditionals from Brighton and De’montford Leicester.
Laura Amy Exelby For the last 2 years I have studied 3D design crafts. However, prior to this is studied A levels and an EPQ on ammonites, I decided to use this prior knowledge to support my research into prehistoric life in this project. I chose to use to wood for this project as it is my preferred material, used hand tools and not electric tools as much as possible as I prefer to do things the more traditional way. My piece was decorated using a combination of hand carving and pyrography. This bench is inspired by the Victorian hall benches that evolved from high societal sofas and fancy settles to a humble handy functional bench. Overall, I’m very pleased with the outcome of this piece and it is the perfect place to take a rest after four operose years.
Progressing to studying Moving forward I am pursuing a career in childcare and child education.
Leonardo Thomas Potts I am currently a student on Extended Diploma in 3D Design Crafts and the course has let me explore different pathways from creativity to design with different styles, textures and forms. In my project I been passionate about using clay however I can confidently say I can work with most materials in response to project briefs. I like to use clay because it has many different outcomes, depending on the process and finish you use. For example, when you form the clay into an abstract and geometric feature it can be glazed and the outcome can be a very futuristic design. In my FMP of this year, I used ceramics to produce a model, that included every design feature and form I listed. I loved this project because it was not only for my own interest, but it also helped me understand about architecture and infrastructure when designing and testing with a variety of substances to get the perfect shape to the exact measurement so that the model outcome is successful.

Louis Matthias Moore Hollowed I am a second year Extended Diploma 3D Design Crafts student, really drawn to ceramics and specialised my skill set there. I have explored tile and coloured slips and glazes for finishing techniques, as well as experimenting with mixed media and introducing metals, such as copper and upcycled materials into my work. The malleability of the clay is what attracts me and how workable it is with other materials. For my final Major Project, I chose a theme of ‘Myths, Legends and Folklores’, investigated lesserknown mythology from across the globe and how these are often extracted and distorted from real events, social values and beliefs. From this I developed a multi piece ceramic composition, with an interchangeable, stencil and inlay surface design to represent the collective distorted origins of myths and portraying the likeness of a local legend.
Progressing to studying Next year I am honing my skills and expanding my portfolio through a place on the Art & Design Foundation Diploma, with a view to gaining more experience in preparation for a degree course.
Lysander Orion Penrose I am a 3D Design craft student finishing my 3rd year at college. I was doing engineering for my first year which gave me a lot of metalworking skill, I carried this forward into my 3D Design Craft course. My passion is metal working/blacksmithing and so lots of my projects have revolved around metal. My personal favourite project, which was titled Beyond Useful, in which I made an impractical foot stool inspired by the game DOOM (2016) and DOOM ETERNAL. For my FMP concept I wanted to make a building inspired by Cybergoth. This became a plaster cast maquette of my Cybergoth building. I did enjoy mixed media. I learned a lot from it, such as how to cast plaster on a larger scale in a wooden mould.
Progressing to studying I have received offers in BA(Hons) Architecture from Nottingham Trent University.
Max Pennington During my time studying 3D Design Craft, I have primarily made jewellery using different metals, as this is the media, I find best expresses my ideas. Working with jewellery is something I have always wanted to do as it has been a keen interest all my life. My work has mostly been typical pieces of jewellery like rings, necklaces etc. but for my FMP I decided to veer out of my comfort zone and create large, abstract, body adornment pieces. This is something I really enjoyed as I finally feel that I have made something that conveys my personal style. The concept of my project was to make a range of body adornment that would be worn together, based on different aspects of architecture and art movements. I ended up making nearly 30 separate pieces made from brass, each hand-hammered, formed, and polished to create a texture and shape that demonstrates the key features of my research. Next year I will be continuing to work with jewellery on the 3D Design and Creative Practice Degree at York college, as I believe it is the next step in my progression towards my career as a Jewellery Maker and Designer. I think that I will have the opportunity to further develop my skills both in the workshop and the classroom which is something I look forward to.
Shannon Jade Webster Design has always been a passion of mine; it is all around us and for me I love to incorporate my own aesthetic into my designs to make them unique and individual to myself. I am currently a student in Extended Diploma 3D Design Crafts and hopefully progressing in the design route by studying Interior Design at Northumbria University in September of this year. In my designs I love to use wood as my main media however I can confidently say I can incorporate most materials into my projects if necessary. I like to use wood because it holds a very professional quality to it, depending on the process and finish you use. However, in my FMP of this year I used clay to produce a model of my take on a more beneficial and sustainable way to build an affordable house, for countries that have extreme poverty such as Africa. I loved this project because it was not only for my own interest, but it also helped me understand the way countries with a low financial state build such outstanding structures.

Students will gain confidence studying at Level 1 in an art and design studio. The tutors guide and support students in studios and workshops to produce a portfolio of work in art and design. The course involves the following areas: exploring drawing, painting, print techniques, 3D design craft and a personal project. Students will experiment with a variety of art, design and craft media and techniques, and explore the work of other artists in a lively and exciting way. This course is designed to study GCSE English and Maths alongside the student’s studio projects which are essential to prepare students for employment or the next level at College.
Ben Forshaw Theme of the project was experience York.I decided on creating a flag book to create an experience and a 3d sculptural form. I love animals and often use them as the subject of my artwork. I wanted to do something that shows the small things that we take for granted, which is when I decided to do a piece on bugs. I live near the Yorkshire Moors and took my own primary photographs and drew observational drawings of bugs. I wanted to do na artist book from the get-go but I wanted one that didn’t take away from the drawings and I landed on the ieia of doing a flag book as its simple but adds that “experience.“ element I needed I’m proud of the book I created as it combines both my drawing and 3d skills.
Progressing to studying I’ve enjoyed the level 1 course and I’m hoping to progress to level 2 Art and Design.
Chloe Kidson At Level 1 I have improved my knowledge of composition ,2D and 3D, and making continuous repeat patterns manually. I also made repeat patterns digitally with photoshop. For the final project I made a flag book with chip board, card, double sided tape, my own original photos, spray paint (white) and black and white paint. Also, I used card to make a stencil and painted or spray painted the words onto the covers. The white goes well with the black background. I used my knowledge of composition to create a variety photographs including flowers, buildings and landscapes around York. I have been taking photos for a long time and use my learning to improve. I now understand the importance of annotation and evaluation and I am much more confident doing this.At the moment I am thinking about my options for progression.
Elisha Lancashire During this project I tried to experiment with different techniques, materials, and styles. At the start of this project I did a lot of sketching and painting. As I went on, I did lots of annotating and I also used mixed media. I enjoy doing mixed media paintings using tissue paper as it gives it an interesting texture. For my final project I made a tunnel book. I don’t often do 3d art, but I enjoyed this. I would like to do more art books in the future. The artists I researched influenced my work I used bright clear colours inspired by Kate Graham’s work.
Harley Vick This year I feel like I have learned a lot of new techniques including lino printing. I am usually good at managing time and thinking outside the box and I have discovered a new passion for photography which I used in my final project as well as a source of inspiration for some further art I did for the final project. I also experimented with different techniques with my project, and they influenced my final project and the way I did them as when I changed my mind from doing a fine art piece, I was initially going to do a flag book but changed to a blizzard book after researching different book folds and wanted my final piece to be more interactive. I also enjoyed doing digital art as it appealed to me, and I felt more in control, and I felt more comfortable doing it. I hope to progress to Level 2.
Kaseylea Greenwood With my final piece I used the artists in my research to inspire my work, I used the idea of animals and landscapes. I had an idea of a stag in some kind of landscape and I developed on this by doing multiple stances and paintings until I did my final piece. I have really enjoyed the course, I made friends and become confident in the group.
Kirsten Hutchinson Our theme was ‘Experience Yorkshire and I have used primary photos of nature and incorporated them into designs for cards, wrapping paper, cups, bowls and coasters. I think the mind map, gave me the opportunity to explore different ideas. I researched artists and was inspired by Neile Cooper, a stained-glass artist and Thomas Schaller a landscape artist. Neile, uses a lot of natural images and Yorkshire is known for its countryside, wildlife, and nature. I think the mind map gave me the opportunity to explore different ideas, I think I would like to investigate the history of Yorkshire and to explore the landscapes more. I have learned a lot from the Level 1 course I enjoy colour mixing and using acrylic paint. Over the course, I have noticed that I have been using art as a form of selfexpression, rather than seeing it as workload. I am thinking about progressing to level 2
Maddie Ayre Whilst on level 1 I have enjoyed learning new skills like photo shop and Illustrator to edit photos and select parts of my pictures to change the colour. I would like to progress to level 2 art and design and continue use these skills to develop my artwork for my second year of college. Whilst I was doing primary and secondary research I was inspired by Ian Scott and his use of colour in his painting of London. I then did my own acrylic painting of Selby Abbey using his colour techniques and used my digital skills to scan my picture and edit it in photo shop and Illustrator. I took this improved image and made a 3d Flag book. This was inspired by another artist Hedi Kyle. When I was making the artist book I learned book binding skills, and these will allow me to make my own book covers any time or for any projects I might have in the future.
Nick Durcan I have enjoyed the Level 1 course and almost every process and technique that I have tried. I have learnt about colour theory, observational drawing, drawing from life, working in 3d with clay and wire. It has been good to be able to use lots of different materials. I have also made repeat patterns manually and digitally using photoshop. When we were working online, I was able to make power points to present my work. The theme for the final project was “Experience Yorkshire” and I decided to concentrate on the architecture of Huddersfield, and Malton where I have family connections. My final piece was an acrylic painting of the Shambles Office in Malton, and I used my drawing skills to create the bricks of the buildings and create the roof texture. I would like to progress to level 2 art and Design next year.
Olivia Wake The theme for the final major project was ‘Experience Yorkshire.’ Through my research I discovered places I never knew existed particularly Rawcliffe lake which a friend told me about, and I didn’t know existed before the project. I was inspired by -print making to do a screen print project. I visited numerous times to look at the changes through the seasons, I took photographs then experimented with different water colour techniques. For my research, I looked at artist maps. To develop my ideas, I used tracing paper to capture the movement of the water. I developed a colour palette for the project. I did some additional artist research for my screen-printing project, I looked at Emma Reynolds and Laura Hastings. I managed to use the professional print room to achieve my final piece.
Progressing to studying I am seeking employment and returning to college to do Maths.
Tom Smith For my final piece I made a mobile inspired by Alexander Calders work. I looked at his kinetic mobiles and his use of simple shapes and colours which all appealed to me. I decided to make a mobile out of copper wire and copper sheet metal, I used thick wire for the frame and thin wire for the wires that suspend the sheet metal. I have enjoyed my time on the course and I feel a lot more confident than I did before.
LEVEL 2 ART & DESIGN The course involves working on projects in a rich variety of fields such as: painting, drawing, graphics, sculpture, digital design and mixed media printmaking. Students work in an art and design studio and also spend time in the Apple Mac and mixed media studios, enjoying a very broad range of media that prepares them for the next stage of study. Students will research the work of artists and designers in a historical and contemporary context. There will be opportunities to go on educational visits that are linked to the course. This course is designed to study GCSE English and Maths alongside the student’s studio projects which are essential to prepare them for employment or a Level 3 course in the College.
Ace Bailey Artist Statement – The name of the FMP was Urban Art – Art of Protest . I chose the themes of LGBT rights and how they interact on the internet.
Alexandra Rose Charlotte Burns Creative Statement – Our theme was Urban Art, I chose the themes Water Pollution and Deforestation as they are the most common problem and spread throughout most of our daily activities as most of what we do such as drive, litter and accidental oil spills, I mainly focused on the Deforestation point with my work also adding abit of the water aspect to it. I took inspiration from Banksy and Agris Ser as they use Protest Art and bright colours in their street art, I like using bright colours with the contrast of dark as it draws people to it.
Progressing to studying I will hopefully go into level 3 art and start up my own online business Social media Instagram - @ deltadoesdraw
Alisha Hodges The theme I chose was environmental pollution, as I felt drawn and attached to this certain topic as I personally love the trees and nature that surrounds us. I decided to base my project on spreading awareness of littering, because every litter we drop destroys the nature that keeps us living. The eye on my project is to represent the earth crying from the careless pain we put upon her. Nature provides us the oxygen we need, and littering is slowly stopping that from happening, because all the new plants that grow cannot reach the level they are meant to and instead die and rot away which the dead tree in my project is supposed to represent. The gas mask is to represent the future of ourselves holding on to what’s left of our environment and oxygen if we don’t change our ways. The earth takes care of us and keeps us living so we should take care of her in return. I really enjoyed working through the urban art topic as I have gained my confidence within my artwork and learnt and experienced new skills that I didn’t know before, after doing this course I now feel more ready for what my future may bring me, I am prepared for any challenges that come my way.

Annie Wilson The name of this project was Urban Art -Art of Protest. The themes I chose were Feminism and Victim blaming. I chose these themes as they are subjects, I am passionate about due to personal experience.
Progressing to studying I would like to Progress to A Levels.
Benji Buckley The theme for my project was mental health because of its current relevance to me and how lockdown has affected the majority of people’s mental health, especially how people’s connections to other people has diminished during lockdown and how that’s caused mental health cases to increase. All of this inspired me to create a piece on mental health specifically loneliness and loss because of the loss of people and jobs during covid. I enjoyed coming up with ideas for my final piece and creating prototype flipbooks for my final piece, because it was fairly easy and quick to do and was rewarding to see. I learnt the very basics of animation, I learnt how to create backgrounds for my scenes and how to create storyboards. I was very inspired by artists like Toby Allen and Shepard Fairey toby for both of their different styles of artwork and how they both show different parts of protest art in very different ways.
Progressing to studying I plan to go and do biology photography and art A levels at Pocklington School
Caleb Matyus My theme was homelessness and the difficulties that exist for homeless people in their environment, such as hostile architecture which along with the passing of my dog and the world wars with the dangerous barbed wire which led me to look at memorial benches. Then how homeless people sleep on benches and how the government stops and combats the homeless, like an urban war trying to mute the existence of their lives. I enjoyed being able to handcraft a model bench out of my own materials and equipment, including mild steel for the frame, wood for the slats and the barbed wire which I wrapped the piece in. My final project portrays how difficult it is to be homeless and the struggles that there are to just exist. The main equipment I used was my coal forge, leg vice and hand drill that all worked together to create the final conceptual artwork.
Progressing to studying I want to progress by going onto the level 3 3D design course and refining my ability to work with new materials and learn new techniques. Social Media @matyusmetal_works
Ellie Ray The project set was Urban Art- The Art of Protest. The theme I chose was plastics and pollution. The reason I chose this theme was because of the recent rise in concern over climate change and how plastic waste and population is having a impact on the earth. During the project I really enjoyed the making of my final piece and creating something that was passionate and personal to me. The reason I chose this theme was to create awareness and to bring attention towards pollution and toxic wastes. Throughout the project I’ve gained knowledge on how plastics and pollution affects the world around us. I have also gained confidence when experimenting during the project and trying out new ideas and materials.
Progressing to studying Fashion and Design
Georgie Lhei Felebrico My project is all about Animal Rights because almost all the animals were not given attention about their rights. Animal testing, Hunting and being polluted were the reasons why animals suffer, and these reasons were mostly caused by humans that’s why I used this project to show awareness to people how they harm animals and damage nature with their actions. This Project was inspired by the Artist that I chose such as Banksy, and Adam Neate. Banksy gave me an idea to make this piece in 3D while Adam Neate gave me the idea of using a bright color instead of using light colors. What I enjoyed doing in this project is how I came up with the ideas and putting it all together and what I have learned is how to blend paint very smoothly. I will be taking Level 3 Graphic Design for my next path. I am looking forward to learning new things about Graphics such as Animation, Designing brands, and 3D design. I have gained confidence and a lot of people have been telling me that they can see that I have the potential of being a Graphic Designer looking through my works since I started Level 2 Art and Design.

Heather Austin The name of the project was Urban Art - Art of Protest my chosen themes were Myths & Legends. I was inspired by all of the artist that I researched s in some way. I enjoyed the theme of this project as I felt that it gave me more creative freedom and room to express myself in my work. I enjoyed looking into different urban artists and the movements they support and express in their work. I also enjoyed watching exit through the gift shop, it was interesting seeing how urban artists create and display their work covertly and seeing what inspires them. My favourite part of the project was my own research of mythical creatures for my final piece, I most enjoyed looking into Japanese Yokai, which are creatures that come from old myths and legends, which I did use to inspire my final piece.
Isaac Kelly The name of this project was Urban Art – Art of Protest, the themes I chose to explore were Cyber Punk and LGBT. I chose these themes as I have an interest in these themes and they are personal to me. My final piece is based on the character The Plague Doctor from a game called “Fortnite”. I enjoyed the challenges that this project posed and am thinking about progressing to L3 Graphics in September.
Progressing to studying L3 Graphics
Jayden Pszenny I chose to do mental health as a theme because I think it’s an important topic that should be shown awareness to. Throughout the project I enjoyed doing the research as I could find out more things about certain topics in depth for example how images can trigger or express various emotions. I also experimented with colour association to express emotion I did this by making a collage for example blue could be associated with sadness and red could be associated with anger. I was inspired the most by Shawn Coss because theme links in with my final piece very well and I pulled inspiration from his artistic style which is horror like and that’s something I really liked about his work and I found art style very fascinating. His work represents different mental health issues in a negative light.
Progressing to studying I am hoping on going on to level 3 Art and Design
Keeleigh Wall For my project I went with the theme of Injustice for families of loved one’s murder as this is something that has impacted my family for nearly 20 years, and I felt like giving my project inspiration from a real-life experience could make the message I am intending to convey through my final piece that much stronger. The rights of the families of the murder victims do matter more than we know, and their words shouldn’t be silenced, or sugar coated by the media. I was inspired by Banksy’s artistic style and the way he can make a powerful message out of the stencils he makes; I find his artwork bold and out there. I think he has a unique way of delivering a powerful message to a group of people. The elements of my project that are collage was inspired by Mr Brainwash and his experimentation exploring different medias.
Progressing to studying Next year I would like to continue on with this course and go onto Level 3 Art and Design as I have really enjoyed this course.
Kieran Fairclough The project set was Urban Art-The Art of Protest and the theme I chose was mental health in male. I chose this topic because I feel very strongly towards mental health, especially how it affects males and how they struggle to talk about it as stereotypically “men don’t cry”. However ‘behind closed doors’ men struggle, maybe even more then women because of the stereotype and how they have to keep everything in so that no one sees the real them. There has been a concern in rise over suicide in males, especially during the recent global pandemic and lockdowns. During the project I enjoyed the aspect of producing a piece that I feel strongly about and how I can lay across the message that “MEN DO CRY!”, “MEN HAVE EMOTIONS!” After creating this final piece I feel even more confident about the topic.
Progressing to studying L3 Art and Design
Kwaama Konteh The project name was “Urban ArtArt of Protest “my chosen theme was ‘racism’. I chose this as I am passionate about speaking up about this topic. I wanted to express my experiences with it through the piece because I know other black men and women will relate but are tired of having to speak out about it. During this project I have learnt to take things that I like from other artists and incorporate it into my own. What I enjoyed about this project is the making process as the shading was therapeutic to me . I have really gained confidence with my time management skills as in the past I was always unsure I would get my work done in time. This time I made sure that I didn’t leave all my sketchbook work till the last minute. I am prepared for level 3 and will apply all the things I have learned next year.
Progressing to studying Level 3 Art & Design
Lewis Holroyd The name of this project was Urban Art The project name was “urban art – art of protest “and the themes that I chose were myths and legends/pollution. My inspiration came from a variety of different artists that did art work on pollution and dragons. I enjoyed the final project a lot making the dragon wings and head. I also made a lot of my sketchbook work stand out a lot. As I enjoyed making those pages as spent a lot of time doing references to the artist’s work. In level 2 art and design I have gained a lot more confidence in my work so even though what I’m progressing onto computer games development next, I am capable of getting the work done.
Progressing to studying Level 2 computer games development
Marcus Mason in the project, ‘Urban Art’, my two chosen themes were Cyber world and body image. I think they both worked together well for my final piece because I specifically got inspired by the cyber world and the need to change yourself and add to fit in. This is just like how it is in our world, the constant fear of not being good enough so you change yourself for others. An artist that greatly inspired me was @aguebart on Instagram, who’s unique style definitely caught my eye and I incorporated that in my final piece. The main message of my final piece is half about changing yourself to fit in and accepting the body you have. I have really enjoyed painting and have gained a lot of confidence from it because I’ve never properly painted before so this was a very good start and I think I’m quite prepared for the next level.
Progressing to studying L3 Art & Design
Millie Bulliment The project was called Urban Art – Art of Protest. I chose the theme of urban myths and legends. I decided to take the route of legends but exploring more of a celebrity side towards hip hop 90s legends in which I chose Tupac. I chose him because his music and him as a whole person obviously impacted many people otherwise, he wouldn’t be still remembered today and that’s why I chose to put in writing “legends never die”. I used a variety of mixed media such as , acrylic paint, biro pen , charcoal and water colours in each Tupac portrait and for each background I used different coloured silk thread and sewed it into the canvas around the head of Tupac.
Progressing to studying Level 3 Art & Design
Robin Palmer The name of this project was “Art of Protest”, and the art we did was inspired by graffiti and street art. My theme was mental health, and my art was meant to represent overthinking and how small yet overwhelmed it can make us feel, and the creature in the middle is surrounded by lyrics and poetry that reflect how it could feel in this state, which also makes the character look surrounded and trapped. My painting was loosely based off paintings by Kurt Cobain, and slightly based off Banksy’s work. I enjoyed learning how to express topics through art and seeing how other people express certain things through art. This project also made me feel more comfortable doing painting and experimenting with certain methods of painting.
Progressing to studying L3 Art and Design Social Media @2001concert
Roux Sutton I made a brick wall covered in graffiti which was inspired by the 1UP graffiti crew. I enjoyed researching different styles of graffiti and seeing how different and unique they were. I learnt how to do lettering neater than I could before and found out that I really enjoy designing and drawing graffiti style fonts. My themes were Stonewall and Equal LGBT rights because I feel strongly about those themes and feel as though they need more awareness.

Scarlett O Neill The name of this project was Urban Art -Art of Protest. The themes I chose were Homelessness and Amnesty International .I chose these themes as I am interested in human rights and equality.
Progressing to studying L2 Music
Shona Cunnison The name of this project was Urban Art -Art of Protest. The theme I chose was Plastic and Pollution.
Progressing to studying Level 3 Art & Design
Tasnim Smith My theme for the final major project was BLM, specifically police brutality and the corruption of the police force because I feel like it needs to be talked about more than it already is, following the death of George Floyd. I really enjoyed the research element of the project because I learned a lot about the history and impact of such a movement. I wasn’t inspired by one artist, but I did enjoy the colour schemes used by Faith Ringgold.
Progressing to studying At the end of the year, I plan on taking some time off and then study a degree in dance, probably ballet, and join a dance company.
Thomas Robshaw The name of this project was Urban Art -Art of Protest. The theme I chose was ‘homelessness’ and I explored the style of Basquiat to create ‘free style’ drawings which I did on paper and board also transferred to t-shirts and tote bags.
Zoe Dix My theme for this project was feminism and poverty and one of my main artists that influenced me in my work was Miss Tic. She was a popular feminism street artist since 1985 (before Banksy) and is well known for empowering woman with her graffiti. The most enjoyable part of the course was deciding on my final piece adding texts to the image and what image to use. I liked how the work came together and looked like graffiti on a wall.

LEVEL 2 ART & DESIGN JANUARY START This short course is designed for students who have for a variety of reasons required further support before they decide on a full time. The course involves working on projects in a rich variety of fields such as: painting, drawing, graphics, sculpture, and mixed media printmaking. Students work in an art and design studio and mixed media studios, enjoying a very broad range of media that prepares them for the next stage of study. Students will research the work of artists and designers in a historical and contemporary context. This course is designed to study GCSE English and Maths alongside the student’s studio projects which are essential to prepare them for employment or a Level 3 course in the College.
Ella Murphy The name of our project was urban art, art of protest which of the themes linked with this project I chose women’s rights. I chose women’s rights (as being a woman) I know first hand the prejudice and hardships that come with just having a vagina. I have found this course has enabled me to grow confidence in my art skills and I have learnt key skills of how to complete an effective project.
Progressing to studying In September I will be starting the vocational fashion course here at York college in order to get into a university that will propel me into my dream job: a costume designer.
Emilyjane Smith The theme of my project was “Urban ArtArt of Protest”. I chose the theme of lgbtqia+ as this is a movement that I am interested in. I enjoyed researching artists who made art on this theme particularly Keith Haring. I really like the bold colours he used and his part in the 80’s-90’s night life in NewYork. I chose to do my take on one of Keith Haring’s pieces for my final piece. His work is so diverse, and it tells a story often about what the media didn’t want people to hear back in 80’s-90’s, specifically the Aids Epidemic. Haring used his platform to fight for his friends and fellow lgbtqia+ community. These are kind of people who interest me, people who are not afraid to speak out when everyone else is afraid to. When this course is over, I am going to move on to creative media because I enjoy doing art, but I prefer it more digital.
Progressing to studying L2 Creative Media
Emma Atkinson The name of this project is urban art “the art of protest”. I chose the theme of LGBTQ+ rights because it’s something important to me as part of the community and I have always been inspired by many different LGBTQ+ artists. For my final piece I was inspired by looking back at the many pride parades and protests and seeing how art has been used by LGBTQ+ people to express themselves. i took parts of that and used it as inspiration in my own piece. During this course I enjoyed learning about the different ways people express themselves and their own views through art, also how it is used to make a statement and fight for equal rights. Throughout this course I have enjoyed learning many new skills and I have also gained a lot of confidence in my work and feel prepared to progress.
Progressing to studying L2 Art & Design
Hannah Stockill The theme of the project was urban art and the art of protest. I wanted to do my final project on a theme that I was passionate about. I wanted to express how I feel about the lack of funding for mental health in the UK. I made a wall out of Modroc and wanted it to look like graffiti, I was inspired by Sickboy’s art with techniques such as different fonts and bold colours. If my art was on a wall in the street, I would want people to see it and sign petitions/donate , ideally I would want the government to see it and re asses the funding they give to things such as Cahms.
Progressing to studying I am moving onto level 3 Creative Media production next year.
Jay Peirson This project was called Urban Art -Art of Protest. The theme that I decided to go with for this project was LQBTQ+ rights. I chose this theme because it has a personal meaning to me. During this course I have done a lot of painting which I have enjoyed however I am now exploring more digital drawing and painting, which I hope to expand and develop further on the L3 course. I feel that the Jan Start course has given me an opportunity to prepare for Level 3 which I now feel ready for.

Lauren Slater The name of this project was urban art “the art of protest”. When choosing the theme of my project I chose the theme of Women’s Rights to demonstrate the struggles women face and the fact women are still not treated as equals to men, even though women have fought for their rights and do just as good of a job as men do and there’s still a wage gap. I was inspired by the suffragettes and how hard they fought for their right to vote. Throughout this course I thoroughly enjoyed the print making processes like lino printing and mono printing, I also really liked working with clay. I think this course has prepared me for my next course, AS I have explored materials like ceramics.
Progressing to studying Next year I am going to progress to the L3 3D Creative Craft course.
Leon McKnight The name of this project is urban art “the art of protest”. Maggie Proudman The title of this project was ‘Urban Art’ and ‘The Art of Protest’, and for my final piece I chose the theme of ‘Eat the Rich’ because I have always been passionate about the anti-establishment and anticapitalist movements that are prevalent in the UK. During this project I really enjoyed gathering research and designing my own fonts and tags – and I really loved being able to take inspiration from one of my favourite artists, Basquiat, for my final piece.
Progressing to studying After this course I am moving to London, and hopefully I will continue on a creative course such as art and design or cinematography.
Molly-Beth Taylor The name of this project was “Urban Art – Art of protest” when choosing my theme I wanted to make sure that I chose a topic that meant a lot to me, I also wanted to relate emotionally and physically to my final piece, Another reason that I wanted to create a final piece relating to breasts is because I believe that breasts should be normalised more than they are now. As I become a young adult I am advised more and more often that I shouldn’t go out into a public place in a top without wearing a bra as it will “suggest/ imply” that I am a certain “type” of female that is “consenting / asking” for a kind of attention. Growing up with this I agreed and didn’t understand what that meant but now I am growing into a woman’s developed body I find bras are unbelievably uncomfortable. So basically, my final piece art is protesting about being able to feel free, confident and comfortable in what we wear but also to raise awareness of how common unwanted attention is. My protest is based on woman, but men and others still face the same kind of uncomfortable experiences which isn’t right as we are al on this planet together and should feel free.
Progressing to studying Next I would love to onto the York college 3D creative crafts course at level 3 extended diploma hopefully this will lead me into interior design which is my dream job.
Serena Jackson The project was themed around Urban Art and ‘The Art of protest’ which I paired with the theme of ‘mental health’ as I myself have struggled with my mental health in the past. My final piece was 3D created from clay, it portrays an almost yarn bombing quality for people to support and acknowledge mental health issues. My pots were designed with the concept that plants should be treated like the mind, neglect it and it dies or support it and it thrives. My ash tray has irony with the idea that you leave the empty cigarette in the lips and watch the rest engulf the face the same way it feels when you smoke, it clouds your mind. Using the skills I have developed on this course I am excited to progress further.
