BA FASHION DESIGN & PRODUCT INNOVATION YEAR 1 COLLECTION Design Collaboration (this project is kindly supported by The Wilberforce Trust and The Company of Cordwainers) This module brief sees students explore the themes that define the York based charity The Wilberforce Trust. Students were invited to develop research around the term ‘Inclusivity’. How can this design encourage a more inclusive fashion landscape? Project outcomes include finding solutions for the practical, everyday challenges people with sight loss or visual impairment face when it comes to fashion for example the eyelet detail describing the garment colour in braille. Sourcing tactile, high sensory fabrics and fibres encouraged students to consider ‘what draws us to a garment other than its appearance?’ Unearthing developments in technology and manufacturing to find solutions to consumer need resulted in a print design on each piece that rises from the fabric base to allow wearers to trace the shape using fingertips. Each outfit in the collection includes a bespoke leather accessory designed following research conducted into the Company of Cordwainers. Attention to detail, including the companies crest laser cut into Perspex and leather, encapsulates the traditional qualities of the Company in a collection of trend driven, innovative accessories.
BA FASHION DESIGN & PRODUCT INNOVATION YEAR 2 COLLECTION This module is delivered in association with York Art Gallery (Grayson Perry; The PreTherapy Years). Melanie, sculpted by Grayson Perry in 2014, is centre stage in CoCA 1 at York Art Gallery, a voluptuous figurative piece with a strong narrative which discusses the changing views of what constitutes feminine beauty. But what do you think constitutes beauty? This question alongside the universally human themes present in Perry’s work such as identity, gender, sexuality, social status and religion were posed to York College BA (hons) Fashion Design & Product Innovation level 5 students who have explored aspects of Perry’s diverse practice. They have gained industry experience, responding to a client brief, developing their skills and creating interpretive materials in response to Perry’s work. Grayson Perry : the Pre Therapy Years is on display in the Madsen Gallery, York Art Gallery until September. Find us on Instagram at yorkcollegehefashion
BA FASHION DESIGN & PRODUCT INNOVATION YEAR 3
George Boocock A collection influenced by the shape and form of crystals and the characteristics associated with Zodiac signs. Power, beauty and elegance inform this free spirited collection of evening gowns. The jewel like colour palette of Emerald Green, Midnight Blue, Amethyst and Garnet Red is complemented by the printed satin (designed by George using alcohol inks to recreate the effect of sun light filtering through White Opal crystals). The heavy satin and sheer organza fabrics are handled with a sense of adventure and bravery to produce a collection that not only represents the sharp angles of crystals but encapsulates the symbolism of each gem.
Progressing to studying George has progressed from the Extended Diploma in Fashion at York College on to the BA (hons) in Fashion Design & Product Innovation. He is based in Leeds and has post-grad ambitions to pursue a lifelong dream of launching his own unique, alternative bridal and occasion wear collection. Social media @ clover.official
Marta Szumny More office and study time is taking place from our homes via online meetings. In my Final Major Project, I have explored how a seated lifestyle and greater reliance on online communication contribute to the deterioration of an inactive body and the growing sense of disconnect from nature. To gather my research, I visited the Science Department of York College, and an anonymous online survey informed my research about others’ experiences with working from home. As well, I experienced my research issue first-hand.I aimed to produce a conceptual couture fashion collection with a focus on creative patternmaking and textile design. I have used occasion fabrics to produce textured textiles by exploring pleats, pintucks, stitching, and appliqueing. In my practice, I aim to be sustainably aware with materials. In this collection I have used fabric’s selvedge as a decorative trim, velvet offcuts and knitting string remnants as an applique. My long-term aim is to progress into couture and bridal design.

Sarah Cawthray Inspired by nature Sarah sources her ideas while walking near her home in the North York Moors, on the east coast and holidays in the UK and Europe. Each individual piece is a celebration of colour and mark making influenced by abstract designs and connects the viewer to nature. Sarah likes to use everyday objects to make marks. Each piece is unique, either hand built, mould pressed or poured slip before adding texture and colour to her ceramic pieces. For her final degree show Sarah’s love of nature and the environment has led her to create an installation that is thought provoking and addresses our relationship with the natural world. The work is in conversation with her love for the environment and her family fish and chip shop heritage.

Alysha Nichol I have previously studied the media makeup course since a level 3 qualification and have always wanted to be based around tv and film. However, after this year of focussing two of my final images around synthetic hair and wig cages, It has opened a new skill set which I would love to work with in the future. This has resulted in me enjoying the process of designing and creating all types of makeup from high fashion and editorial shoots as well as the realistic special effects. My dream job would be to be working with some of the best photographers out there such as Rankin to showcase my makeup and hair skills within magazines as well as still having the opportunity to work with makeup designers on some of the popular tv shows which are still on going.
Progressing to studying The next step I’ll be taking will be to apply for job roles within the fashion industry as well as TV and film. I’ll also be looking for any work experience to be able to further develop my skillset. Social media Facebook: makeup by alysha Instagram: makeupbyalysha__

Ashlea Rooney Although mostly wanting to go down the route of applying and colouring prosthetics for TV and film, I enjoy every aspect of makeup for the TV and film industry. Although I do love the horror and gore side of prosthetics, during my BA degree, I got to explore beyond this. Sculpting and molding old age prosthetics for my final project. This opened up my eyes and allowed to me experience a deeper side of prosthetics that I would like to one day work in. During my FD degree, I got to enjoy creating period makeups. This was also something that I wanted to explore as a makeup artist as I love investigating what influenced particular eras to present themselves in the way that they did. My next stage when I graduate is to study a master’s degree in Prosthetics for Film and TV. This will allow me to develop my skills so that I can look forward to furthering my career in the industry.

Charlie Leigh I specialise in prosthetics, makeup, and photography. Over the past year I have drawn inspiration from history, the paranormal and contemporary alternative styles. I have explored various thoughtprovoking topics through time and offered vibrant and varied takes on these challenging events. As a Make-up Artist I love to think outside the box, I look at everything from a different angle. I often utilise history and music to inspire my designs and projects, this project was based on the question “Has the history of Halloween been lost due to commercialisation?”. This was my first project with full creative freedom, and I have learnt so much about myself through this time, I have found I now want to pursue teaching and later complete a master’s degree in prosthetics. These images are not exactly the best work or photos I have ever completed, but they are my favourite memories.

Chelsea Elton I have been studying in the make-up industry for 5 years now. I initially began by turning my love of art into an interest in painting bodies and faces. Through completing a college course, I became familiar with simple make-up applications and techniques. I am now coming to the end of university and have thorough knowledge of standard makeup, hair, and prosthetics. Each photograph has been designed and completed for my BA project in relation to the theme of ‘love’; the intention was not to be obvious but to encourage others to be open-minded about the concept. My intended career path is to be a successful media make-up artist; this work is part of my first self-directed project as a professional freelance make-up artist.
Progressing to studying I am hoping to achieve a successful career within the media make-up industry working alongside industry professionals on television or film. After finishing university, I will be working on creating my own brand and completing an extra course specialising in the business and marketing side of the industry.
