universities. These employers are part of the governance of the Institute of Technology to ensure continued collaboration and long term benefits for the region.

The Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Technology – specialists in providing higher-level technical education and training.

INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY The Institute of Technology is part of a government initiative for the College to work alongside local employers to understand what the skills needs are and then look at how the curriculum can be tailored to meet those needs. Through the Institute of Technology, employers will have the opportunity to support the content of courses and help ensure that students’ skills are up-to-date and relevant for the work place. The Institute of Technology brought an investment of circa £10 million of capital funding into the region. York College has invested a proportion of this into industry-standard equipment to support the delivery of higher-level technical training. This massive training boost will enhance employment opportunities and ensure highly qualified individuals for the region’s employers.

WORKING WITH LOCAL EMPLOYERS The bid has received significant levels of employer support. Digital and engineering businesses ViSR, CATCH, Skipton Building Society, GB Recruitment and ENGIE Fabricom recognised the need for investment in education to address their wider skills shortages and have signed up as employer partners to be involved in designing the appropriate curriculum, supported by research from the local

MATURE STUDENTS | 15

Mature students We’re proud at York College University Centre to have a thriving and vibrant community of mature students. Returning to higher education is a decision many make, however, it can be daunting and pose some difficult questions. Navigating student finance, how to manage your work life and studies and even what course is the best to choose to enable you to reach your destination career goals, are all common and important questions. We want our mature students to not only succeed in their studies but to thrive in the academic environment we have created here at the College. To achieve this, we have put in place a strong support network with mature students in mind. • Many of our courses have reduced or condensed hours. This is done as a consideration of the various work life commitments our students have, be they work, home-life or childcare. We strive to make sure you can still study alongside your other commitments.

• Closer tutor contact; you’ll create a close relationship with your tutors who will guide you throughout your studies here with us. Creating a unique relationship with your tutors lets them gauge your skills and talents. They can then help guide you in the best way to approach your studies, tackle your assignments and ultimately pursue your future career. • Employment focus; our courses are designed and taught with a clear focus on industry and post study employability. We realise many mature students seek out higher education as a gateway into a specific job role or career advancement. Structuring our courses around this means you’ll be work ready to pursue these avenues when you complete your studies. These are just some of the ways in which we strive to ensure our mature students thrive at York College University Centre. To see some of these things first hand or to talk to our tutors about the best way to achieve your ambitions, visit one of our Open Events.

Modern bars sit inside ancient buildings, coffee shops sit shoulder to shoulder with gothic churches and boutiques line medieval streets. York offers all the amenities you would expect of a modern 21st century city but surrounded by some of the UK’s most iconic and beautiful scenery. This unique blend makes York one of the most desirable cities in the UK to live and work in.

The city plays host to a perfect mix of nightlife, green space, galleries, coffee shops, theatres, museums, street food and much more. On top of all of this, York boasts festivals all year round from the Jorvik Viking festival, which is one of Europe’s largest historical festivals, to the Yorkshire fringe in summer which sees the city host world famous comedians and stage shows. The College has great facilities and the flexibility of the course content benefited me loads. I went in to the course wanting to make furniture and have now specialised in ceramics.

ALUMNI | 32

ALUMNI WHERE ARE THEY NOW? We are extremely proud of our alumni and rightfully so. Many of them have gone on to achieve incredible things. At York College, it is so important to us that we remain connected with our graduates and are able to share their successes with other prospective students.

It hit me at the graduation ceremony in York Minster: I am a teacher. Doing something I love every day, that I believe has great value to others; until I retire. What more could I dream of? PGCE In-Service Lifelong Learning

I heard about York College’s good reputation and after speaking to the course leaders, I was really happy with the flexibility the College offered over other places. The tutors were great and supported me whilst I gained invaluable hands-on experience during my placement in a childcare setting. Since graduating I have become Deputy Manager of a nursery. BA (Hons) Leading Children’s Development and Learning

The degree course has helped me with realism and having a qualification in hairdressing helps me to achieve an overall look. In the future I see myself as a make-up artist working on horror, in films, television, theatre or promotions. Foundation Degree (FD) Media Make-up, Special Effects and Hair Design

Since graduating I have been lucky enough to run my own successful business; designing and creating a range of children’s clothing and running a series of popular sewing classes. BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Product Innovation

For me, York College feels like home and I enjoy working alongside the Art & Design students, giving advice and assistance in the studio and workshops, working in parallel as I develop my own art practice.

KATE

Coming out of a time of family tragedy and crisis, I have turned my life around and feel such hope for my career as an artist. My world had contracted into a dark place but now feels wide, bright and something to conquer. I’m receiving great feedback about my sculptural porcelain and have more ideas for exhibiting around the country. My degree at York College was the springboard to a whole new life. I feel invigorated, inspired and full of passion for my new career as an artist.”

Artist in Residence BA (Hons) 3D Design & Creative Practice

After successfully completing a Level 3 Diploma in Constructing the Built Environment at York College, Lewis took the next logical step to achieve his career goals and continued onto the HNC Construction & the Built Environment. The connections he made whilst studying here resulted in him gaining employment with renowned construction company, Simpson York Ltd, where he currently works as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor. Lewis credits working in the industry while completing his studies as an invaluable experience, he has been able to boost his academic knowledge and put theory into practice. Upon completing his HNC qualification, Lewis will progress onto further study to complete his training to become a fully qualified quantity surveyor. “York College have been vital to my success. If I hadn’t have come to the Open Events that the College puts on, then I would’ve never have found Simpson and wouldn’t be where I am today. As well as this, the tutors are very supportive and will always go out of their way to make sure you understand tasks and make you feel comfortable in the environment.”

Delivering Your Apprenticeships Do you need support and guidance to deliver your apprenticeship programmes? York College can bring learning and on-the-job, work-based training together to deliver a skilled workforce. Working with employers, we help develop the skills of new recruits and existing staff through our workbased apprenticeships, covering a wide range of industry sectors from Level 2 to Level 5. Our apprenticeship programmes enable new and existing employees to gain industry specific skills and knowledge by releasing them for day or blockrelease with our expert staff and using our wellequipped facilities. The employee must be working at least 30 hours per week and meet the entry requirements set by the apprenticeship and the employer. With a mentor in place, employees will have the workplace training to support and manage their progress throughout their apprenticeship. We will ensure that both quality and standards are being met, carry out workplace assessments and award certification on each phase of the apprenticeship.

Sarah Pearson, Office Manager at 10 Squared in Pocklington fully supports apprenticeships: “We fully endorse the Apprenticeship programme, it offers businesses the opportunity to invest in young people, enhance skills and productivity within the workplace, and also allows you to train people in the skills pertinent to your own business requirements. York College is our first choice when it comes to finding the right apprentice for our business. Their highly knowledgeable staff provide a seamless experience and only put forward the most suitable candidates.” Paul Hawley, Site Manager at Dunnington Electrical: “It’s useful to have another skill-set and a fresh pair of eyes, and it’s good to have someone keen and willing to learn on the job. Apprentices are needed for the future of the trade, it’s only through on-site experience and working with tradespeople that skills are developed.” We can help you develop your apprenticeship offer, provide guidance to access funding and help you recruit an apprentice to develop the skills you need for your workforce.
