Taster Days •

The HNC in Film is a one year course designed to develop your practical and theoretical understanding of film. The HNC could be used to give you a chance to earn a qualification whilst developing the practical knowledge needed to make your own films, or prepare you for further study at university of on the HND Film course at college. You will develop your skills as a director, editor, cinematographer, producer and screenwriter. We’ll study: • • • •

Film Production Editing Cinematography/Photography Film Studies

The following is an exercise to give you an idea of the sort of thing you might study on the course.


Task • Choose one of the pieces of work you have produced. This could be; • Video work

• Short film, trailer, sketch, edited footage, titles, drone footage etc.

• Photoshop/Image Manipulation

• Posters, magazines, graphic designs, branding, typography etc

• Photography • Artwork • Or any visual productions you have created • Video game capture etc

If you have never produced any of the above, instead do the task looking at your favourite scene from your favourite film instead.


Task • Once you have chosen your product, do a video analysis of it using video editing software, referencing; • • • •

Behind the scenes facts from when you made it. What techniques you have used when recording/editing etc. Reasons why you made certain creative decisions. Things that you are proud of/went well.

• The video should be;

• No longer than 2 minutes. • Feature your voice as narration

• You can record your voice into your computer’s microphone or your mobile phone will have a voice recording application.

• When complete, export the video and upload it to YouTube/Vimeo and send the link to the video to jroberts@yorkcollege.ac.uk with the subject Taster Day Submission.


Software • Use whatever editing software your most comfortable using or have access to. Most devices will have some form of free editing software on them; • PCs have Windows Movie Maker • Macs have iMovie

• Or you can download the free software for your device; • Mac/PC

• DaVinci Resolve • DaVinci Resolve 17 | Blackmagic Design

• Phone/Tablet

• Premiere Pro Rush • Adobe Premiere Rush — Video Editor - Apps on Google Play • Adobe Premiere Rush for Video on the App Store (apple.com)
