CAREER CHOICES Which one is right for you?
CHOICES Choosing the right course or subjects to study after Year 11 is very exciting, but can also seem a bit confusing with so many options to choose from. It is important to look into the range of professions and careers the courses can lead on to. To give you a little help, the following pages show a selection of possible careers open to you from specific subject areas. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but is a good starting point to help you decide which course area might be right for you.
All of the career maps in this booklet are on our website too – www.yorkcollege.ac.uk. They can be found on the ‘Subject Area’ menu item on the homepage. Highlight the subject area you are interested in and click on the ‘More’ section. From here you can see the courses that are relevant to the career areas. Click on the course descriptions and you can see what kind of topics you’d be studying. It’s never too early to start researching the choices available to you, and it’s important to look at all of your options and choose something you’re going to enjoy!
How do I become a stage designer? I like practical work - what can I do? I love History - what could it lead to? I’m good at cooking can I study it full-time? How do I become a vet? What types of courses can I do?

GETTING STARTED Search online There are lots of opportunities to help you find out about different careers and find something to suit your skills. There are some online quizzes that you can do such as https://icould.com/buzz - a fun quiz where you find out which one of six animals you are, based on your strengths. The National Careers Service has information about jobs, what’s involved, potential salaries and what qualifications you need to have - go to https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk.
Talk to someone Careers interviews – an ideal opportunity for you to discuss with a qualified careers adviser which areas of work you are interested in. The careers adviser will have a wide range of information they can provide you with to help you make a decision about subject areas you plan to study. Careers fairs – often with employers, training providers, sixth forms, colleges and universities, these give you the perfect opportunity to get advice in one place about different routes available to you. Work experience or volunteer work – work experience can provide an insight into employment and the skills required in the workplace. If work experience isn’t available then why not try and do some volunteer work? It shows you have initiative and commitment to find out more about what you are interested in, and you’ll learn valuable communication and teamwork skills. Friends, family and teachers – sometimes it’s hard to be objective about your own skills and strengths, so asking someone who knows you can help.
Which route to choose? When you know what entry requirements you need for the career you want, then you can work backwards to see what you need to study. Often there are different routes available so you can choose the method of working that suits your learning style best. Remember, try and choose subjects you enjoy!
A Levels They have an academic approach studying a range of subjects and are primarily assessed by written exams. They are a route to university, employment or apprenticeships.
Vocational & Technical programmes These are mainly assessed through a combination of coursework and controlled assessment and focus on one subject area. All levels offer a route to employment and apprenticeships, and Level 3 courses can provide progression to university.
Apprenticeships These provide on and off-the-job training working alongside experienced staff whilst being paid. Degree level Higher Apprenticeships are also available.
Personal statement When you apply for a course at college or sixth form, you’ll be asked to write something to say why you want to do the course/subjects and what you’re aiming to do when you finish. It doesn’t have to be really long, just a short paragraph is fine. It helps if you are interested in the subject(s) you are applying for, and it’s relevant to any future plans you have. If you don’t yet know what you want to do that’s fine, but you need to show that you have an interest in what you are applying to do. Check spelling and grammar – and definitely make sure you’ve spelt the name of the subject you’re applying for correctly! You could get a friend or family member to check it if you’re not sure.

THE ROUTES WE CHOSE
Lewis Deighton studied Constructing the Built Environment Extended Diploma Level 3. “The course appealed to me after talking with a careers adviser as I knew I wanted to get into the more technical side of the construction industry. I have learnt a wide range of topics which has broadened my knowledge.” Lewis is working for Simpson York Ltd whilst continuing to study the HNC Construction and the Built Environment.
Alex Mosey studied Sport and Exercise Science Extended Diploma Level 3. “I chose to study Sport and Exercise Science as it’s a subject that really interests me and I wanted to increase my understanding of the subject. I also felt this course would be a good pathway to university and I liked that it’s assessed through assignments instead of exams.” Alex is now studying Sport and Exercise Science at The University of Bath.

Amber Simpson completed the Business Extended Diploma Level 3. “I chose a Vocational course rather than A Levels so I could wholly focus on one subject over multiple. It has allowed me to properly look into a career path which I’m planning to work in. The course has allowed me to experience activities which gives me great opportunities when working in a business environment.” After completing her course, Amber secured an apprenticeship with City of York Council to study for a Level 3 HR qualification.
Molly Brazenall completed the Electrical Installation Diploma Level 2 and is now studying the Level 3 Diploma. “I chose this course as it offers the type of learning I’m suited to and I enjoy learning electrical skills. My favourite part of the course is the fact that it’s so practical and hands-on, and I think I learn better this way. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to own my own business.”
Peter Xue studied the Professional Patisserie and Confectionery Diploma Level 2.
Holly Mawdsley studied A Level Ancient History, Maths, Further Maths, Physics and The Extended Project Qualification and is progressing to Peterhouse, University of Cambridge to study Classics.
“I chose to study this course as I am interested in patisserie and wanted to learn how to create and present different products. I would also like to use the skills that I’ve learned to become a chef in a restaurant or hotel.”
“Ancient History has been one of the most interesting and engaging subjects, and I have been so enraptured by this A Level that I decided to study Classics at degree level. I would like to become either a researcher, a professor or a museum curator.”
William Huddie studied A Level Maths, Further Maths and Physics and is going on to study Theoretical Physics at the University of Leeds. “I chose to study Maths at York College initially as I knew that it was necessary for my future career, however I have really come to enjoy studying both Maths and Further Maths. The way Maths and Further Maths are taught by the same tutor really enhances the learning experience and has improved my ability.”
Lauren Coulter is studying the Laboratory Apprenticeship Level 3. “I chose to do this apprenticeship as I wanted to take a different route to getting a career and it’s a stepping stone to other lab work. I’d like to do forensics one day. I did Biology at A Level and I enjoy Science, however I didn’t want to go to university so I found the perfect job, gaining experience in a lab environment. Once I have had a few more years’ experience I would love to go into forensics in the police.”
