Metroland Media For years, some of us have wondered just how to explain an automotive naming contest there that came up with “Tiguan”, improbably cobbled together from the German animal names for “tiger” and “iguana”. Puzzling, and you could, at first, be equally mystified by the “Special Edition” designation of the 2016 Tiguan reviewed here. You see, our Tiguan tester came in grey. Granted, a new Krypton Grey Metallic colour that was added to the paint palette for 2016. And a nice deep grey at that, with a kind of understated, business suit-style esthetic elegance. But still, umm . . . grey. Inside more grey on the cloth seats, doors and dash. The Tiguan gains a little identity with some model-exclusive trim pieces like the eight round vents doubling up on the usual four dashboard locations, their metallic surrounds creating at least some contrast with a glossy shade of, uhh . . . more grey. But “special”? Okay, I’m through poking fun because VW’s Tiguan has always managed to pull it off anyway, even with this introverted colour selection, thanks to the Euro-inspired design of this compact crossover. There’s a unique and classy flavour to this Tiguan that continues to impress, inside and out, with its clean-lined simple elegance of style and taste. And this is a competent cross-

over too, with useful storage capacities and compact-style seating comfort for five that includes the versatility of a sliding 20/40/20 second row. One thing all Tiguan models have in common is the 2.0-litre TSI engine under the hood, a turbocharged motor making 200 hp and 207 lb/ft of torque. This engine is up to the task and hums up to speed nicely. Fuel economy is rated
at 11.6/9.3L/100km. My real world results averaged out to a satisfactory 9.5L/100km, albeit on premium fuel. And, actually, the Special Edition name here refers to a trim line, sort of an intermediate stage designed to give Canadians that little bit of extra content without the premium price point, a ploy other manufacturers have followed with special editions, sometimes referred to
as “Canada Value Packages”, that seem to suit thrifty Canadian sensibilities while adding some of the most desired features. The Tiguan has historically come in three trim levels, continuing this year with the Trendline ($24,990), Comfortline ($33,998), and Highline ($36,998). Those lineups have been simplified for 2016 with the base Turn to page W3

New QX60 builds on Infiniti success SAN ANTONIO, TX: You don’t mess with success, which surely applies to the QX60, Infiniti Canada’s top-selling nameplate. It joins with the compact luxury QX30 expected later this year, the mid-size QX50, the QX70 “performance crossover” and the full-size QX80 luxury SUV. It’s tough to put a size on the QX60 because it fits as an intermediate CUV, but has best-in-class interior volume for up to seven passengers more like a full-size crossover. More than 12,800 QX60s have been sold to date, with more than 90 per cent of buyers being new to the brand. So with those kinds of numbers, the 2016 version of the QX60 gets a major refresh but the core values are not played around with. From the outside the full suite of now signature design cues are applied such as the signature grille, headlamps, LED daytime running lights, LED fog lights, integrated LED turn signals in the side rearview mirrors and new 18-inch and 20-inch wheel designs. Always well appointed, the 2016 interior adds new graphite weave interior accents, stitched upper dash and a new shift lever (shared with the new Q60 coupe). The list of standard or optional technology on the QX60 is almost endless, a partial list includes: Infiniti Connection telematics system with Google Calendar; Drive Zone/Speed Alerts; remote services plus emergency services; a Bose Cabin Surround 15-speaker sound system with digital 5.1-channel decoding and Acoustic Waveguide subwoofer. An interesting feature is the Around View Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection (MOD), which uses four wide-angle lensequipped cameras to create a “birdseye” view on the centre console of the area surrounding the QX60 during parking and other slow-speed maneuvers. Tiguan captures uniquely European sense of style Continued from W1 Trendline now offering only front-wheeldrive with a standard six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic with Tiptronic shifting ($1.400). This base level does, however come fairly well equipped with everything from a standard rearview camera to eight-way adjustable seats, cruise control, fog lamps and more. The Comfortline and Highline trim levels make the six-speed automatic standard along with VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system, and they build on the content levels with bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, fancier upholstery and fully-loaded equipment lists. But our Tiguan SE ($29,998), as a sort of intermediate trim level, straddles the gap between the base Trendline and the midlevel Comfortline models. The SE package sticks with the Titan Black Pakata cloth interior instead of the Comfortline’s leatherette or the Highline’s real leather seating, but it does add the six-speed auto tranny and 4MOTION along with 17-inch Fortaleza alloy rims instead of the base model’s 16-inch wheels. For the 2016 model year, the Tiguan Special Edition also adds a USB audio input and a Composition Colour five-inch touchscreen radio/CD audio system with SD card slot. Other SE features that build beyond the basic Trendline content a few of which are: auto-dimming interior rearview mirror, Automatic headlights with coming and leaving, Climatronic dual-zone electronic climate control and rain-sensing wipers. Of course, just because the SE is an intermediate trim level doesn’t mean it can’t be optioned up and, as tested here, our Tiguan SE adds a Navigation Package ($995). The other main option with this trim level is
a Panoramic Power Sunroof ($1,400), not added in this case. The current first generation Tiguan will carry on in Canada through this year and the next. Sales have climbed even without significant changes as all crossovers ride the wave of the segment’s increasing popularity. But a longer, lower, wider second generation Tiguan will debut in European showrooms this spring, with a new North American version stretched even further (+110mm longer) coming to Canada late the following year as a 2018 model, with a potential offering of three-row, seven-passenger choices as well. Kia’s 2017 Sportage has ‘Power to Surprise’ very quickly. And one of those changes was styling. Schreyer and his team’s work on the Sportage transformed it from wallflower to a belle of the ball almost overnight. It’s hard to believe the new, 2017 is only the fourth generation Sportage, and goes back some 23 years. But Kia has never strayed far from a winning formula. Like the previous generation, the new Sportage comes with two engines and a choice of front- or all-wheel-drive with a six-speed automatic transmission. On the base LX and EX, the primary engine is a direct injection 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder with 181 hp and 175 lb/ft of torque. On the two topline models, the EX Tech and SX, is Kia’s potent 2.0-litre twin turbo fourcylinder with 237 hp and 260 lb/ft of torque in AWD form only. Both the 2.4-litre and 2.0-litre run on regular fuel and towing for each is up to 2,000 lb, when properly equipped. A standout for the Sportage is the standard Down Hill Descent Control (engaged by a button on the centre console) which is usually found on SUV/CUVs costing double or triple the cost of a base Sportage LX. On a steep incline, punch the button on the centre console and computers take over and allow the Sportage to go down at a steady 8 km/h without the driver touching the brake or gas pedals. During the launch of the new Sportage, Kia let us go off-road near Vernon, B.C., on a rutted, soggy path, including a steep incline, in the woods with deer literally on both sides watching our progress. Friends, I simply cannot, as much as I have tried, switch on downhill control, nose over and plunge down to a forest floor without having my foot on the gas or brake pedal. So I let someone else take over as I held my breath, closed my eyes while the deed was done with no drama whatsoever.

During the press launch of the Sportage, Kia made the full lineup available to autowriters. One feature that should attract Canadian intenders is the availability of Kia’s Magna Canada-sourced Dynamax intelligent AWD system, which is available on every trim and features a 50/50 locking centre differential. The system senses, anticipates, and optimizes traction needs for all road and weather conditions. I wish I had room to delve into the overflowing cup of connectivity, but suffice to say the new Sportage is the first Kia to offer UVO3, featuring Android Auto, Apple CarPlay (April availability), 14 telematics services, and eight GB of music storage and all free of charge. But that is what Kia does, isn’t it? They call it “The Power to Surprise” and I couldn’t agree more.

While the 2017 Sportage may look similar to the outgoing 2016, there are some subtle but important differences. There are two separate nose treatments for cooling reasons, depending on engine choice. And, if you look closely, the area where front fog lamps used to be is now a duct to feed cooling air to the front brakes. Sportage features an innovative dual-level cargo floor and a widened luggage area resulting in cargo capacity behind the second row that has grown substantially from 739 litres (26.1 cu ft) to 869 litres (30.7 cu ft) by (US) SAE standards. By relocating the licence plate from the bumper to the tailgate, the lift-over height has been lowered for easier loading and unloading. A Smart Power Liftgate, which automatically opens when the key fob is within three feet of the vehicle, is also available.

The Japanese had what we now consider a CUV for years, until someone at Toyota had the bright idea to bring one to North America, which resulted in the 1995 RAV4 followed swiftly by the Honda CR-V, the Subaru Forester - and you know the rest. In Korea, Kia had been building a very basic CUV based on the Mazda Bongo from 19932004, followed by a second generation that went on until 2010 selling in small numbers and which was largely ignored. Prius drives into the mainstream Jim Robinson
Metroland Media VANCOUVER: Toyota is planning to bring hybrids “into the mainstream” with the 2016 Prius. Firstly, Prius is a mid-size sedan with comfortable seating for five and sizable trunk, so that nothing or no one is jammed in. Secondly, it is amazingly frugal with a combined fuel rating of 4.5L/100 km. Thirdly, Prius comes with the new Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) on all models except the Base, where it is an option. TSS blends four advanced safety systems - Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Auto High Beam and Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control working in stop-and-go traffic down to a full stop. TSS will be standard on most Toyotas by 2017. Prius uses Toyota’s hybrid synergy drive system, which consists of a 1.8-litre Atkinsoncycle four-cylinder with two electric motor/ generators. The big difference between the new and last generation is the use of two different batteries. On the lower trim levels, Toyota sticks with the nickel metal hybrid battery it has used from the start. On the higher trim levels, Toyota uses a lithium-ion unit because it is lighter and offsets the weight of the extra added equipment. Both batteries are smaller in size and have a flatter shape so they can fit under the rear seat instead of under the cargo floor, freeing up considerably more space. The transaxle is also smaller, allowing the auxiliary battery to be moved into the engine bay. This system produces a net 121 hp that doesn’t sound like a lot, but then there is the torque with the engine/motor combo. Toyota won’t give out torque numbers, but I’d put it at about 200 lb/ft based on my experience. Prius retains a CVT transmission, but uses shift-by-wire technology through fingertip movements of the tiny shifter found on the lower centre stack. This all results in a fuel rating of 4.4/4.6/4.5L/100 km city/highway/combined or 64/61/63 mpg. With a drag coefficient of 0.24, Prius is one of the most aero-enabled vehicles on the road, thanks to a myriad of devices such as stabilizing fins on the under-floor covers, plastic air deflecting covers over the alloy wheels, automatic grille shutters, front spats and covers on either side of the fuel tank. As luck would have it, I was teamed with Daniel Breton, a Quebec autowriter specializing in green propulsion and, for a time, Quebec Environment Minister. This is a guy who knows how to get the best out of a hybrid and he did just that achieving 2/8L/100 km on an 8.1 km loop around
Stanley Park. Another was 2.9L/100 km over 31.2 km, but going admittedly very slowly. In the real world we averaged 4.6L/100 km over a morning of driving — right where Toyota said it would be. Most of our time was spent in the Base car with TSS. When the engine was running, it was well muffled with Breton making the most of regenerative braking and using the engine to charge the battery, instead of the more wasteful engine driving the wheels rather than the motor. We found the topline Touring to be quieter than the Base, with the level of premium equipment making it a very pleasant place to be. Ride quality is much improved over the 2015 model, thanks in part to the rear double wishbone suspension that not only lowers the car to improve handling, but makes for extra cargo room. Prius is also one of the first vehicles to use the Toyota New Global Platform that dramatically improves rigidity. Standard equipment includes: 6.1-inch Display Audio system with six speakers; voice recognition; Bluetooth capability; air conditioning with automatic temperature control; 60/40 split fold down rear seat; the Smart Key System and Push Button Start. Toyota/Lexus has led, and still leads, in hybrid propulsion, so this decision to take Prius and make it a player in the mid-size sedan segment was not done lightly. Competitively priced against “normal” mid-size sedans, Toyota also is playing the fuel-economy card to go along with real room for five. For instance, Toyota compared the Prius to the current Ford Fiesta sub-compact. With its four-cylinder, 1.8-litre engine/electric motor, Prius averages 4.5L/100 km. With its 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine, Fiesta gets 6.6L/100 km. Toyota uses the tagline “Going Beyond The Possible” with the 2016 Prius. And knowing Toyota, it’s possible they will successfully inject Prius into the mainstream.

New for 2016 are the advanced Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW) system, which warns the driver of risks beyond the driver’s field of view, and Forward Emergency Braking with a new pedestrian detection feature.
I could go on, but I only have so much space for this story, but suffice it to say, the QX60 is content rich including no less that eight cupholders, six bottle holders, four 12-volt power point and an available 120volt outlet in the rear in front of the centre console. All QX60s in Canada will have standard all-wheel-drive with a 3.5-litre quad cam V6 producing 265 hp and 248 lb/ft of torque and CVT transmission with fuel consumption rated at 12.2/8.9L/10.7L/100 km city/ highway/combined. There is also a Hybrid version of the QX60 with a supercharged 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder and an electric motor powered by a compact lithium-ion battery pack and rated

at 250 net system horsepower. The front strut suspension has been returned with a thicker stabilizer bar while the rear multi-link system gets a pre-compressed shock mount that increases damping force without increases road noise in the cabin. Seating for seven is made easy with a 40:60 split second row seat with 5.5 inches of slide to facilitate third row access and the second row has heated seats optional. Cargo volume behind the third row is 15.8 cu ft, 40.8 cu ft behind the second row and 76.5 cu ft behind the first row. The ride and drive of the new QX60 was held in and around San Antonio which, while always pleasant, does not offer the most challenging terrain, being mostly flat/straight two-lane highways surrounded on all side by endless acres of scrub. My driving partner and I were in a Deluxe Touring and Technology model ($61,400) that had just about every option or feature in the parts bin and boasted a warming “wheat” coloured interior. On the interstate, the QX60 rolled along calmly with the lane departure alert making itself known as very strong side gusts pushed us around a bit. Off the main roads, the QX60 with its new power steering rack and improved chassis tuning continued to provide a supple ride when we finally found some slightly twisty roads. I am sure all the safety and ride systems were working away, but I never felt a thing — such is the level technology these days. It would be the almost perfect vehicle to take on cottage trails or drive across the country. Infiniti, long near the bottom 10 of luxury vehicle makers, is now growing swiftly with sales in Canada up 10 per cent last year and 16 per cent last year. It sold 215,250 units in 2015; marking the first time in its history it exceeded the 200,000 mark globally. Infiniti Canada is on a roll with the QX60 leading the way.
