Plenty of thrills with Genesis R-Spec Coupe

One can be excused for assuming Land Rover is the domain of the well heeled.

Sure, CEOs, celebs and Royals will drive them, but that’s generally the six-figure flagship, or possibly the ‘Sport,’ which starts here around $76K and climbs quickly.

Like most luxury marques, however, Land Rover’s pricing ladder includes a less snooty bottom rung that’s within reach of the rest of us.

Land Rover’s previous entry point was the boxy LR2. It started just a tick under $40K, but ceased production in 2014 after a 17-year run. It was capable enough, but getting long in the tooth.

Its replacement – the Discovery Sport – is longer, leaner and less upright, hitting the wallet similarly with a starting price of $41,790. It is also more fetching, looking more at home alongside its posh siblings.

Chic interiors are part and parcel of Land Rover, and although this model is their lowest priced, they didn’t skimp on craftsmanship.

My tester was the top-trim HSE Luxury ($50,290 plus $6,250 in options) which included tan Windsor leather seats that were as attractive as they were comfortable.

Perforated and ribbed inserts with double-stitched side bolsters create a premium look, not to mention long-distance comfort thanks to 10-way power adjust, along with heating and cooling.

Door inserts were a matching material, which along with brushed aluminum trim looked very upmarket.

And it didn’t feel like a ‘penalty box’ having side windows instead of massive C-pillars, and amenities that include third-row fan controls, map light, USB and 12-volt outlet.

The available panoramic sunroof also helped these confines feel less confined.

There’s just a sliver of cargo space behind the 50/50 third row, so to carry more than a few groceries, two pullstraps will drop these seats flat for a 981-litre cargo hold.

Longer items like skis or lumber can pass through the second row’s centre position. Or fold both rows for a maximum 1,698 litres.

Indeed, the Discovery Sport is roomier than you’d think, but that’s not reason enough to buy one.

The Discovery’s high and rising beltline and rear sloping roofline create a sleeker silhouette than the square sided, flat-roofed LR2. The latter’s tall windows may offer bet-

ter rear and side visibility, but it’s a dated look.

More significantly, Land Rover’s new starter vehicle (built on the Evoque platform) can carry up to seven passengers.

The Discovery Sport is nearly four inches longer than the LR2, yet is smaller than compact rivals like Mercedes GLC, Acura RDX and BMW X3. And they’ve still carved out enough room for an available third row.

So let’s start at the back.

Padding here is scant, and both head and legroom are tight, but with the middle row positioned somewhat forward, my five-footnine frame fit without too many gymnastics.

Trust Hyundai to one-up the opposition — again.

This time it’s with the 2015 Genesis Coupe R-Spec model that sets a new standard as the most powerful car under $30,000 on the Canadian market.

A rear-wheel drive sports coupe, the Genesis comes standard with a tire-smoking, direct injection 348 hp 3.8-litre V6 engine — all for $29,499.

Hyundai calls the R-Spec the “enthusiast-focused” model and it is equipped to bring out the boyracer in all of us.

While I’m well past the target demographic for this car, any enthusiast, regardless of age, will find it a fun, exhilarating ride.

R-Spec models arrive with a variety of high-performance features such as bucket seats with large side bolsters to keep occupants firmly in place during high-speed cornering.

There is also an impressive Brembo brake package, Torsen-type limited slip differential, a sport-tuned suspension with ratcheted up spring rates and specially-tuned damping, along with 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with high-performance Bridgestone Potenza summer tires.

Interestingly, R-Spec is the entry level into the Genesis Coupe lineup — a departure from the norm as most automakers place their highperformance models up near the top of the food chain.

Nissan recently announced that a new 5.6-litre Endurance V8 gasoline engine will be available in the all-new Titan and Titan XD full-size pickup trucks. It features four-valves per cylinder, variable valve event and lift (VVEL) and direct injection, and is rated at 390 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 401 lb/ft of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The petrol engine joins the award-winning Cummins 5.0L V8 turbo diesel in early spring 2016 to round out the engine offerings for the all-new pickup, which stakes out a unique position in the segment between traditional heavyduty and light-duty entries. The new design combines the capabilities of a heavy-duty hauler with the drivability and affordability of a light-duty pickup.

While the new Endurance V8 shares its displacement with the previous-generation V8 installed in Titan, that is where the similarities end. The new engine features 390 horsepower (up from 317) and 401 lb/ft of torque (up from 385), along with Nissan’s advanced VVEL technology, which combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake and exhaust sides to provide high performance and crisp response.

Track-tuning gives R-Spec a firmer ride Similarly, the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ rear-drive sports cars fall well short in the power department with 200 hp and torque of 151 lb/ft.

The 3.8-litre V6 in the R-Spec and all Genesis Coupes for 2015 was only available on the GT model in 2014. It propels the car to a 0-100 km/h time in the low five-second range, according to Hyundai.

The limited slip diff helps out, ensuring power is equally distributed to the rear wheels.

The Genesis Coupe has undergone only minor changes since its debut as a 2009 model, although it received a facelift in 2013, notably with a revised front fascia.

Styling wise, the Genesis Coupe R-Spec has classic coupe proportions with a long hood, short rear deck and a wide, planted stance. Although an aging design, it still has a modern yet classic look.

Inside, there is seating for four and the look is more upscale than one would expect from a base model. The deeply bolstered seats are leather trimmed with a contrasting red stitching.

However, the dash and console appear a bit outdated with lots of plastic-looking materials.

Being an old-school guy, I love the buttons and knobs on the centre stack for the HVAC and audio system.

So simple to use and ergonomically correct. Gauges above the HVAC controls give readings for torque, oil temperature and realtime fuel economy.

The back seat is best reserved for children; adults only recommended for short, aroundtown jaunts.

Trunk capacity is 322 litres that can be expanded by folding down the rear seatbacks.

All models come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. An extra $1,800 gets you an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters on the Premium and GT models.

Few consumers would bat an eyelash if you were to tell them that the R-Spec is a value leader — after all Hyundai has built its reputation by offering vehicles that surpass expectations.

But most people, particularly American muscle car fans, would be amazed to learn that the Genesis Coupe R-Spec also outmuscles cars like the base Chevy Camaro (323 hp 3.6-litre V6) and Ford Mustang (300 hp, 3.7litre V6) on the horsepower front.

Since the R-Spec version is aimed at driving enthusiasts, the track-tuned suspension is on the firm side. For example, the R-Spec and GT front spring rates are seven per cent firmer than on the Premium model and the rear springs are 11 per cent firmer.

Similarly, the steering is on the heavy side for a car of this size.

With its powerful V6 engine, rear-wheel drive and relatively light weight of 1,628 kg (3,589 lb), the R-Spec can be a handful when you push it. But as a nod to the enthusiast, the R-Spec has a three-stage Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system.

On start up, the ESC is full on, while the intermediate setting disables powertrain override but retains ESC braking function.

There is also a full-off ESC mode for the driver who wants to take part in autocross events or track days.

And that’s a big part of what the R-Spec is all about.

It has its flaws, but there’s a lot to like about this pocket rocket that’s equally at home on the street or the track.

Porsche Mission E receives green light The first 100 per cent electrically powered Porsche is on its way.

The Porsche supervisory board has given the green light to the Mission E project, continuing to back sustainable growth.

The Mission E concept car premiered at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) in September 2015.

In concept form, the four-door car with four individual seats has a system power output of over 600 hp. The vehicle is expected to achieve both acceleration of 0-100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds with a planned maximum range of more than 500 kilometers.

When charged using an 800-volt charger unit, which is planned to be specially developed for the car (which is twice as powerful as today’s quick-charge systems), the lithiumion batteries integrated within the vehicle floor could be recharged to 80 per cent after just 15 minutes.

Plans are under way for optional equipment that would allow the vehicle to be ‘refueled’ wirelessly by induction via a coil which the owner could have installed beneath the garage floor.

Explorer Platinum raises the luxury SUV bar Jim Robinson

Metroland Media KAMLOOPS, BC: It can be argued that Ford Explorer helped set the stage for, not just midsize SUVs, but for the entire range of crossovers that are sweeping all other segments before them.

And for a quarter century, the Explorer has led North American intermediate SUV sales.

But what does Ford do for an encore?

Meet the next generation, 2016 model upon which a lot is riding.

Ford is very enthused about the new Explorer, yet is mindful that luxury/convenience/connectivity expectations are growing among consumers almost on a monthly basis.

Enter the 2016 Explorer Platinum, not only the first Explorer to carry the Platinum nameplate, but the first to go head-to-head on all levels with the mid-size luxury SUV leaders such as Land Rover LR4, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Porsche Cayenne.

There are actually five trim models starting with the Base, XLT and Limited models with standard 3.5-litre V6 with 290 hp and 255 lb/ ft of torque. Optional on these is a 2.3-litre EcoBoost inline four cylinder with 280 hp and 310 lb/ft.

Body roll isn’t bad for a tall vehicle, although it is more noticeable than in the sportier Evoque. But then again, you’re not buying a Discovery Sport to carve corners.

You might consider one, however, for its family practicality, seven-passenger seating and the possibility of adventure thanks to Land Rover’s legendary off-road DNA. All that with a price point that should keep dealerships busy.

A sport wagon revised for 2016 Rob Beintema

Metroland Media The g-forces of the turn are tugging you sideways against the seat belt and bolsters. And logic says you’re going too fast, too fast through the corner.

But the BMW you are sitting in somehow seems to be calmly suggesting that “no, no, everything’s just fine”.

That’s the very essence of the sport sedan experience that BMW has long perfected.

Or in this case, the essence of a station wagon with the heart and soul of a sport sedan.

The BMW Touring model adds a little extra cargo room and versatility to the performance and luxury mantra of BMW’s 3 Series lineup.

Yes, this station wagon might actually intercept a few customers on their way to an X3 crossover, but this sporty and modern take on an old fashioned formula might just manage to offer the best of both worlds - sport and utility.

In Canada, this wagon comes available in two flavours - gasoline-powered in the 328i ($48,050) or diesel-powered in the 328d model ($49,550).

Both versions come standard with XDrive all-wheel-drive and eight-speed automatic transmissions.

And like the rest of the 3 Series lineup, our as-tested 328i xDrive Touring model has been refreshed with a few cosmetic and dynamic improvements for the 2016 model year.

There’s roomy comfort for four inside, doable space for five, and the versatile 40/20/40 rear seat offers a variety of passenger/cargo configurations, maxing out the 495 litres of luggage room to 1,500 litres with the second row folded flat.

The separated rear storage area make the Touring perfect for pet owners, ready and able for those treks to the leash-free park.

Another neat trick in back allows the cargo area privacy screen to be stored under the floor when not needed.

Under the hood, the 2.0-litre twin turbo fourcylinder carries over this year, making 241 hp with 258 lb/ft of torque peaking across a broad power band from 1,250-4,800 rpm. This engine promises a 6.3 second 0-100km/h acceleration time. A four-banger will never sound as sweet and smooth as a six but the 2.0-litre engine’s get-up-and-go feels spirited and linear.

Fuel economy has been rated at 10.5/6.9L/100km (city/hwy) although my mixed bag of driving, with long highway cruises, urban traffic limitations and occasional bursts of sheer pedal-mashing fun, averaged out to 9.6L/100km (comb).
