Elantra reaches for
ROAD TEST
ROAD TEST
compact supremacy
JIM ROBINSON Metroland Media
VICTORIA: Elantra has been a good thing for Hyundai Canada, with almost 500,000 models sold here since it was introduced in 1991. So good, in fact, it is now the number two best selling compact sedan in Canada edging out the Toyota Corolla last year. Hyundai makes no bones about the Honda Civic, Canada’s best selling compact for 17 straight years, being the target. So for the 2017, sixth generation Elantra, Hyundai pulled out all the stops, with just about everything new you can think of. It starts with the exterior, including the signature hexagonal grille, but with emphasis on aerodynamics. First seen on the Sonata Hybrid, where the fog lights normally would be found, there are airflow openings that channel cooling air to the brakes and manage wind resistance around the front wheels.

Toyota’s hefty hybrid surprisingly easy on fuel
The 2017, sixth generation Hyundai Elantra compact sedan (GLS model shown) is new from top to bottom and brimming over with “must have” features.
With another spoiler on the top of the extended trunk, the Elantra has a better coefficient of drag than the Nissan Leaf all-electric. The interior is big. With a passenger volume of 2,713 litres and trunk capacity of 407 litres, it totals 3,120 litres, which qualifies it as a mid-size sedan although it is officially a compact. The body is also big news, with a 53 per cent increase of Advanced High Strength Steel. litre twin cam inline four-cylinder to the Atkinson Cycle, which improves fuel economy and is widely used in hybrids, although Hyundai is not planning a hybrid version of the Elantra. The down side of the Atkinson Cycle is less power, but Hyundai has done something with the injection and variable valve timing so it produces a creditable 147 hp and 132 lb/ft of torque. There are no fuel ratings at this writing, as the Elantra is still under NRCan testing, although Hyundai officials expect something around 7.0L/100km combined.
There is a six-speed manual on the base L model, but all other trim levels get a new six-speed automatic, which is also optional on the L. According to Hyundai, the new automatic gives a 4.4 per cent increase in fuel efficiency. In addition, all Elantra trims are equipped with the new Drive Mode Select feature, which adjusts both powertrain performance and steering calibration, allowing the driver to customize the driving character by selecting from three modes: Eco, Normal or Sport, Turn to page W2
LEFT: The interior is very clean with a minimum of character lines. The seats are made from soy instead of petroleum-based products. RIGHT: The 2017 now uses a 2.0-litre Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder engine for better fuel economy as well as a new six-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. The only six-speed manual is on the base L model.
Some believe that hybridizing large SUVs is like ordering a diet Coke to atone for your triple cheeseburger. I would suggest quite the opposite. It is these otherwise gas-sucking vehicles that provide maximum return. You can load them up with cylinder deactivation, auto start/stop and power-sapping Eco buttons, but their net effect won’t match any good hybrid system. I’ll leave it to the bean counters to decide whether or not fuel savings justify the higher purchase price. That discussion is a real snoozer, and it’s largely dependent on gas prices which have been dropping as of late. My point is you’ll be spending significantly less time and money at the pump, whether the going rate is 90 cents a litre or a walletdestroying buck-forty. My tester for the week – a 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid – bore this out. You can order the Highlander as a straight petrol burner, with a price range of $33,355 to $46,980, excluding freight and taxes. Or open your wallet even further for the Hybrid.
Price vs fuel savings The base LE begins at $45,755, rising to $48,285 for XLE trim and $54,960 for the range-topping Limited, as tested. This may seem a huge price bump, but keep in mind that gas and hybrid content lists don’t line up – for example, the non-hybrid LE is only frontdrive whereas all hybrid models come standard with AWD. Even more significant are their differences in fuel economy. The conventional Highlander AWD Limited is rated at 13.0/9.8/11.6 litres/100 km. The top-trim hybrid sips in the single digits: 8.6/8.5/8.5 (city/hwy/ comb). My own result was closer to 10 litres combined, but in an earlier test of the 2014 model, I managed 9.3 L/100 km with a marginally lighter foot. Either way, that’s pretty good for a vehicle that tips the scales at well over three tons. Turn to page W4
