Metroland Media QUEBEC CITY: The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe is said to have “looks that thrill with the performance to match.”

One look at the redesigned C 300 4MATIC for 2017 leaves little doubt about the first part of this description.

Get behind the wheel for a few minutes and you realize how true the second part can be, especially when you consider the high-powered C 43 AMG 4MATIC, C 63 AMG and C 63 S AMG versions that are slated to arrive on our shores later in the year.

So for the immediate future, Canadians will have only the sleek and sporty-looking base model C 300 4MATIC Coupe to consider.

This is a car that can’t match its higher horsepower brethren in outright power, but does handle quite nicely as we found during a drive along a winding route through the picturesque Saguenay area of Quebec.

The turbocharged 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine delivers an adequate 241 hp and 273 lb/ft of torque that takes the car from 0-100 km/h in six seconds, according to the manufacturer. While the engine sounds a bit noisy on the outside, inside the cabin is quiet and comfortable.

Rather than a performance coupe, this variant is more akin to a luxury sedan, minus the two back doors.

However, the cabin is cozy with a smallish back seat area that will likely only see use in a pinch.

difficult, even with power front seats that slide fore and aft as needed.

The 40/20/40 split rear seats fold for added storage to the 400 litres available in the rear cargo area.

The interior is spectacular, just like the sedan version with the same dash and rich-looking materials.

Outside, it carries over some of the design features from the topshelf S-Class Coupe such as the long hood and diamond radiator grille.

With its sloping roofline and short

rear deck, this is a car that’s sure to attract attention.

For 2017, the C 300, which comes to Canada only in four-wheel drive format, is larger in every dimension than the car it replaces and it sits 15 mm lower to the ground than the sedan version.

With a wheelbase 80 mm longer, the new C-Class Coupe is 95 mm longer overall and 40 mm wider.

Even with the increased size, weight has been reduced by 50 kg

even though the vehicle is stiffer and stronger through the use of more high-strength materials.

The weight reduction comes in part from a greater proportion of aluminum and also light alloy components in the fenders, trunk hood and trunk lid.

Starting at $48,100, the C 300 4MATIC is loaded with standard features like keyless start, a taut sport suspension and a panoramic sunroof.

MONTREAL: Ever wonder what’s in the fuel that powers those high performance Formula One racecars?

Well, as it turns out, it’s not that much different than what we use in our daily drivers, according to Ian Albiston, Shell’s Formula One Trackside Lab Delivery Manager.

During an interview in the week leading up to the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, Albiston said, “99 per cent of the compounds found in racing fuel are the same as in (Shell’s) V-Power NiTRO+ fuel you put in your car.”

With the introduction of the new engine era, with the new power units, the importance of fuel and lubricants grew.

Thanks to a racing partnership with Ferrari that dates all the way back to 1929 when Shell supported Enzo Ferrari himself, the company has used what it learned on the racing side to help in the development of its road fuels.

“Back in the late ’80s and early ’90s you could smell Formula One fuel miles away… it was awful stuff. It bore no relationship with the fuels you and I put in our cars,” said Albiston.

Then in the mid-’90s, the governing body for Formula One, the FIA, “basically built the rules around road-going fuels.”

Renault/Infiniti predicts F1 podium in two years Jim Robinson

Renault took over the bankrupt Lotus team.

In fact, Red Bull, which uses the same Renault/Infiniti based hybrid engine, was sharing rows two and three with Ferrari during qualifying this weekend due to a strong driver combination and a leading edge 2016 chassis.

Stoll believes, that with a winning chassis and the right drivers, that podium in two years is attainable.

“We have fixed the engine issue and chassis development is ongoing,” he said. “Next year we have the news chassis regulations and we will be concentrating on that.”

“You have to remember it took Mercedes five years to get on the podium and we are in our third year.

“I hear people saying Renault is coming back, but the truth is we have always been in racing.

“We never left and we’ll always be here.”

In terms of putting F1 hybrid experience into road cars, it brought up a question about the possibility of a super hybrid Nissan GT-R or and killer Infiniti coupe to which Stoll only smiled and said nothing.

An interesting sidelight occurred when the subject of Formula E, the all-electric racing format, was broached and how much Renault and Infiniti are putting into it.

“This only the second season but it is relevant to be involved,” Stoll said.

“We want to be a leader in the electric car business and putting cars on the road using what we have learned from racing for range and economy is important.”

MONTREAL: Renault/Infiniti will be on the F1 podium within the next two years according to Jerome Stoll, president of Renault Sport Racing.

“We are not here to be a player,” he said during an interview on qualifying day at the Montreal Grand Prix. “We are here to be on the podium.”

Stoll forthrightly said the situation the team finds itself in today is the result of shifting circumstances within the super competitive world of Formula One starting with the last engine formula with Renault V8 engines powering Red Bull cars and defeating all before them.

“With the last engine, we were under huge pressure by Red Bull…to keep winning,” Stoll said.

But by doing that, too little focus was placed on preparing for the current hybrid engine format. When the switch came, Renault found itself far behind MercedesBenz and Ferrari.

“But now the engine is competitive and I think, more so than Ferrari,” he said.

However, Stoll said a winning package involves three crucial factors – engine, chassis and drivers.

Fuel enhancements improve performance on the track Continued from W1 Raikkonen to have much success with road fuels at the track, but according to Albiston, Shell and Ferrari have run Formula One cars many times on regular premium fuel just to test it out.

Amazingly, because of the way the engines are mapped, the road fuel was quicker in a straight line, but when it came to cornering and acceleration, race fuel came out ahead.

“It was a great relief to us, that yes, race fuels were worth developing,” said Albiston with a chuckle.

In fact, Shell is so tied in with the Ferrari racing team that it brings a complete trackside laboratory to every Formula One race.

“We need to make sure the fuel is legal the whole time… there are really heavy penalties if it’s not,” Albiston explained.

Not only do lab technicians analyze all the racing fuel that is shipped from Hamburg, Germany for each of the 21 events, they also look at the oil after each track session to detect signs of engine wear.

“It’s critical that the health of the engines is managed by real-time analysis at the track,” he said, noting that this year the teams are only allowed five of the V6 hybrid engines and it is most important to keep them track-worthy.

Because of the extremely strict F1 regulations regarding power units, fuel enhancements that improve performance but still meet FIA standards are critical.

Last year, Shell’s 50-member racing fuels team was able to deliver a product that produced a 25 per cent performance gain on the track. That amounts to half a second per lap, and 30 seconds over the course of a race.

To drivers like Vettel, the partnership between Ferrari and Shell, that is unique in F1, is extremely important.

“Certainly with the introduction of the new engine era, with the new power units, the

importance of fuel and lubricants grew massively,” said Vettel.

“Last year we were making a lot of gains, mostly with fuel, to get more performance,” he added, noting that it was not just one or two added horsepower, but 10-plus horsepower.

Vettel, who won the Canadian Grand Prix when he was with the Red Bull team and has had three pole positions for the race, said the Montreal circuit is one of his favourites and he was hoping for more success this year with

To demonstrate that not all gasolines are created equal, Sarina Arnold, a fuels scientist from Shell’s technology centre in Houston, Texas showed off a dual fuel car that runs three cylinders on Shell’s V-Power NiTRO+ Premium gasoline and the other three cylinders on a lower quality premium fuel.

She explained that the NiTRO+ Premium gasoline keeps the engine cleaner thanks to an additive package that provides unbeatable protection against corrosion and gunk and superior protection against wear.

“The fuel is actually designed to coat the metallic surfaces of the engine and it acts like a barrier,” she explained, holding up parts like fuel pumps, injectors and pistons that can be affected by lower quality fuels.

Gunk is a carbon build-up on critical engine parts like intake valves and fuel injectors. Gunk build-up makes the engine part work less efficiently.

Wear can occur wherever there is metal-tometal contact, particularly in the fuel pump and injectors.

Corrosion is a gradual degradation of metal surfaces and it can occur in places like fuel lines, fuel injectors and the fuel pump due to the presence of moisture and other contaminants.

The formulation in NiTRO+ Premium is different from the earlier V-Power gasoline in that the two key cleaning agents perform better than the single component in the previous version.

So how does Shell’s success with racing translate to the fuels we use on a daily basis?

“The technology in Shell V-Power unleaded fuel for the road comes directly from the work we are doing in Formula One with Scuderia Ferrari,” according to Benoit Poulet, Shell Formula One Fuels scientist.

“But that’s not the end of the process, far from it. In Formula One you are always pushing for that little bit of extra performance

Ford increases Escape front row storage Storing your wallet, plugging in your cellphone and enjoying that cold, oversized beverage just got a whole lot easier with the new 2017 Ford Escape, thanks to the compact CUV’s redesigned interior.

The CUV has 25 per cent more front row storage and 15 per cent more overall storage compared with the existing Escape, thanks mostly to the redefinition of the space between the front seats.

The first hurdle was replacing the traditional handled parking brake with a smaller electronic parking brake button.

Ford was able to move the gear shifter

rearward – opening up access to where the media bin and power ports are now housed.

Moving the gear shifter back also allowed designers to create a more comfortable position for a driver’s right arm.

In front of and behind the gear shifter, Ford created two storage bins to place wallet, keys, sunglasses and other everyday items often left sliding around on the passenger seat.

Slightly wider, the console features improved cupholders designed to accommodate a greater variety of bottle sizes, a larger main bin, and a front storage area

that features easy access to a lighted USB port and 12-volt power outlet.

The main centre console bin, which also houses a USB port, is nearly 50 per cent larger than in the current Escape.

Using that USB port, drivers can keep their cellphone securely stored while remaining connected to the vehicle’s SYNC 3 driver connect system.

A passenger-side cargo net adds additional storage, and the glove box uses a new swing-bin design to make it easier to store and access items.
