Metroland Media Always a good seller for Nissan, the 2016 versions of the Altima mid-size sedan are a very important component in the brand’s strategy to keep it the “fastest growing brand in Canada.”

At the press launch late last year, I said the drive route was far too short to form any driving impressions, but that changed after having spent a week of covering all types for highways and byways.

The biggest single change for 2016 is the look, with Nissan’s new “Energetic Flow” styling, which we first saw on the new Murano compact crossover and it now is being applied across the board.

It is centred on Nissan’s signature “V-Motion” grille and boomerang-shaped headlights with halogen high beams, projector low beams and LED running lights.

The boomerang lighting carries over to the rear where they then blended into the sculpted bumper.

With active grille shutters and an underbody cover, the body contributes greatly to the Altima’s very low drag coefficient of 0.26 compared to 0.29 on the 2015 model.

The new design language is also found on the much-changed interior and instrument panel, which Nissan calls the “Gliding Wing” because is shaped like the outstretched wings of a gull. 2016 Civic Touring modestly priced luxury Jim Robinson

Metroland Media Meet Canada’s first automotive Triple Crown award winner – the 2016 Honda Civic.

In January it was named North American Car of the Year. In February, it was named Best of the Best by the Canadian Automotive Jury and Car of the Year by the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada.

That the Civic carried all before it was no surprise to just about every car writer I know and a huge vote of confidence to all the men and women who assemble the Civic at Honda’s Alliston plant.

This is also being shown in sales, with the Civic now chalking up its 18th straight year as Canada’s best selling car.

Civic has come a long way from 1973 when it bowed as a diminutive three-door, to the 2016 model which marks the start of its 10th generation.

In addition to the sedan, a coupe version is coming soon and will be followed by highperformance Si models, a five-door hatchback and the first-ever Civic Type-R model for the Canadian market.

There’s good news on the inside with the unusual two-tier instrument panel replaced by a very large driver information display and a centre stack infotainment screen.

Tested here is the Touring model in leather and all the bells and whistles. In a rich black paint, the Touring looks like an entrylevel mid-size luxury sedan, not a humble compact.

Another thing that gives the Touring that luxury sedan look is the high and low beam LED headlights with auto off/on.

New tires and a racing legend Rob Beintema

It’s a violent affair, the g-forces banging you from side-to-side despite the tight belts, the racing brakes grabbing insanely at last minute corner entrances, the acceleration bursts bouncing you back in your seat again.

And repeat, over and over.

You marvel at a 76 year-old living legend giving rides like this for at least three hours that day.

You marvel at the car, elongated and odd in a way, but still capable of handling almost Indy-like speeds. And you marvel at the tires, those four small but sticky contact patches that allow unbelievably abrupt feats of acceleration, steering, cornering and braking.

This year’s 100th running of the world famous Indianapolis 500 will feature a new commemorative Firehawk Indianapolis 500 tire with special sidewalls marked with special badging and the names of Firestoneshod drivers like Ray Harroun, winner of the first Indy 500, Louis Meyer, the first driver to drink milk in victory circle, and others including Mario Andretti, the “driver of the century”.

Besides the commemorative cosmetics, Firestone engineers tweaked the construction and compounds of this year’s race tires, testing them at the IMS track so that more than 5,000 tires will be ready for practice, qualifying and race day action on Sunday May 29.

Actually, our rides with Mario were a pleasant distraction but our main focus was using the IMS venue to test two new derivative tires designed to take Firestone’s racing legacy to the streets - the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tire and the Firestone Firehawk AS. Both tires have dropped the “Wide Oval” part of their names and both feature significant developments and improvements for 2016.

Metroland Media There’s a sense of witnessing something special when you watch Mario Andretti stroll across pit row at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, pull on his helmet and climb into the cockpit of a racecar.

I’ve run into Mario a few times before, once quite literally when I intentionally rammed him, tit for tat, after he playfully sideswiped me during a promo go-kart race before the Toronto Indy.

But that’s another story.

On this day we would actually be riding in the same car, a rare occurrence made possible by the Indy Racing Experience and a special two-seater version of an Indy-style racecar.

I stepped into the second seat slot behind the driver’s position and slithered down into the hole, shins and feet sliding into position on either side of Mario’s cockpit tub.

The pit crew hovered overhead, pulling the five-point harness belts as tight as they could, wedging a collar piece around my helmet to keep my head from bouncing around.

There’s the usual brief flash of claustrophobia as the belts snug down but it passes quickly in anticipation of the thrill to come.

No dawdling, the crew affixes the starter to the back of the engine, the motor coughs to life and the car launches, roaring and stuttering up the note scale through crescendos of gear changes as we blow through pit row, past the grandstands and onto the road course.

I’m giggling in my helmet, unheard over the engine roar.

Pulse Groove Technology reduces hydroplaning thanks to improved water evacuation, while tweaks to the tread design and a revised rubber compound helps deliver up to 20 per cent shorter stopping distances in the wet.

Clearing morning skies after a night of rain allowed us to test in both wet and dry patches, the Firehawk Indy 500 tires mounted on Camaro SS models and competing with BFG G-Force Comp 2 tires.

A few go-rounds at the wheel and a hot lap with Josef Newgarden, last year’s Honda Indy Toronto winner, demonstrated the Indy 500 tire’s impressively broad limits, allowing the driver to play on the very edge of the performance envelope without the snap of traction loss. The W-rated Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 was introduced in March and is available in 48 sizes from 16- to 20-inch wheel sizes.

For those looking for an all season option, the Firestone Firehawk AS tire has be tuned for traction in wet, dry and even moderate snowy conditions with full-depth tread, 20 per cent more biting edges and more water evacuation channels.

We tested these all seasons on Cadillac ATS models against competitive Sumitomo HTR AS PO2 tires. The new V- & H-rated Firestone Firehawk AS tires, just launched this May, come in 30 sizes ranging from 15- to 20-inch wheel sizes.

Slaloming a few laps with comparative products hardly seems grounds for scientific evaluation but if our exercises proved anything, it showed just how far tire technology has advanced to allow real performance DNA and dynamic advantages in a street tire.

Both Firestone tires impressed in their categories.

And while new rubber might not make you into another Mario Andretti, Firestone did display how competent Firehawk performance tires can bolster everyday performance, making a good driving experience safer and even more satisfying.

Big improvement in handling, styling for 2016 Altima Continued from W1 (2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SR, 2.5 SV and 2.5 SL Tech) and the 3.5 SL Tech.

New this year, and tested here, is the SR with sports tuned suspension with dramatically larger stabilizer bars (258 per cent stiffer at the rear) and a “Manumatic” shift mode on the CVT with standard paddle shifters Fuel consumption is rated at 8.9/6.3L/100 km city/highway.

What amazed me was all the aero work and the more thrifty CVT transmission saw me cover 301.7 km on just a hair less than a quarter tank, which is fantastic. Now I should say my average speed was 59 km/h mostly on side roads, but it’s still good.

Even the tires were given a going over and now have stiffer sidewalls and a higher grip compound used in the rubber.

Nissan benchmarked the Altima against European sports sedans and has added what it calls Active Understeer Control system, that blends intelligent control logic and high-response brake actuators to lightly brake the inside wheel in a corner. Because it operates with the electronic stability control and traction control, the effect is almost undetectable.

For the driver, an added bonus is more lateral grip, resulting in improved predictability with the brakes giving the driver 10 per cent shorter stopping distances.

During my week, I covered 425 km and the 2.5-litre had plenty of power when it came to passing and was almost noiseless when just cruising.

Pricing starts at $27,798 and totalled $29,848, which included $300 for special blue paint and a $1,750 shipping fee.

Nissan’s plan to increase market share is working and the “fastest growing brand in Canada” is being shown in the sales figures with cars like the 2016 Altima doing the job.

What’s interesting is the 1.5-litre with CVT, even though it is turbocharged, gets better mileage than the 2.0-litre with manual at 8.8/5.9/7.5L/100 km.

When I drove the Civic at the press launch last fall, I noticed a bigger difference between the ride and handling of 2.0litre and 1.5-litre, which I later learned was because Honda re-jigged the suspension with grade specific tuning including shocks, springs, stabilizer bars and bigger wheels, resulting in the marked difference between the two, with Honda claiming best in class handling agility.

I used the Touring to pick up a friend at the airport who remarked several times about the quality of the ride and could not believe we were in a Civic, not a luxury sedan.

I was pleased to see Honda made a backup camera standard, along with its available LaneWatch system that has a camera on the lower part of the right outside mirror.

When you flick on the right turn stalk, the camera pops on showing what is behind you on the right. Not only does it make turning a breeze, but the real benefit is, when passing, you can activate the stalk and you can see who and what is gaining on you – brilliant.

This by far the best Civic yet and I won’t be surprised to hear a year from now it is Canada’s best selling car for 19 years in a row.

Ram 1500 Laramie packs utility, luxury and diesel power Continued from W1 The price breadth of the Ram lineup stretches from just under $30K to more than double that amount, topping out at $73,835 for, you guessed it, our as-tested Laramie Limited model.

This top-of-the-line Laramie Limited model is regarded as the “black tie” luxury alternative to the southwestern-styled, cowboy-themed Laramie Longhorn pickup.

And, for 2016, the Ram Laramie Limited pushes the opulence envelope further with unique badging, premium leather seating, real wood trim pieces and other upscale materials blended with meticulous attention to detail.

If you spotted this truck on a job site, you would probably instantly assume it was the boss’s truck, thanks to its classy, optional Granite Crystal Metallic colour ($195) and posh-looking add-ons that include 20-inch aluminum wheels and a Limited Appearance package ($300), bolstering the bling with chrome front and rear bumpers to complement an all-new chrome billet port grille up front, instead of the old crosshair grille, also adding chrome bodyside moulding and the bold, chrome “RAM” badging on the tailgate.

The glitz and glamour carries over inside with a new all-black headliner and pillar treatment, a new console accessed through a classy tambour wood sliding door, pinstriping and accent stitching, Berber carpet inserts, Uconnect communications and infotainment system, navigation, heated/ventilated front leather seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, sunroof and, well, just about every extra that money can buy.

But, as to the business end of this vehicle, the Laramie Limited trim level usually starts with a 5.7-litre V8 engine but our tester has been optioned with the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel ($4,700) boasting best-in-class low-end torque rating of 420 lb/ft at only 2,000 rpm.

That kind of serious grunt enables a 4,173 kg (9,200 lb) tow rating.

way fuel economy rating of 8.0L/100km (4X2). Our as-tested 4X4 version is rated at 12.1/8.8L/100km (city/highway) which could give this Ram a potential range of more than 1,300 km on a tank of gas (with the optional 121-litre tank).

Impressive numbers but my real world results of mixed roads and conditions worked out closer to the city rating at 11.7/100km (comb). Still pretty impressive for a full-size pickup.

And although rumour has it that Ford and GM are scrambling for diesels to compete in their half-tons, Ram’s EcoDiesel remains unique in its segment.

loads and covered with an optional soft trifold tonneau cover that offers some weather protection and load security. The tonneau cover folds back easily in thirds to make room for bulkier, end-of-the-box loads or it can be easily removed and stored after a simple release of four corner spring clamps.

A RamBox Cargo Management System with LED box lighting and a cargo bed extender/divider system is also available.

And the Ram even offers ample interior room for more secure storage. Second row seats flip up and, along with underseat cubby storage, offer fold-out sections to create a flat load floor for a roomy and versatile interior space that we used during our moving duties to shift more fragile articles - lamps, plants, TVs and electronics.

We certainly didn’t provide much of a challenge for a truck that recently won Four Wheeler’s 2016 Pickup Truck of the Year and ranked first as the 2016 Canadian Truck King Challenge winner. The Ram even made it onto the list of Kelley Blue Book’s 15 Best Family Cars, a notable achievement for a pickup truck.

But not surprising, because with this combination of pickup utility, SUV-like interior room and the kind of luxurious appointments we only used to expect in premium sedans, the 2016 Ram 1500 Laramie Limited Crew Cab 4X4 has raised the bar of both pickup quality levels and customer expectations.
