LOS ANGELES, CA: Not to be outdone by their Asian and European counterparts, domestic automakers made quite a splash as new vehicles were unveiled on press days for the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Cadillac took the wraps off its eagerly awaited 2017 XT5 midsize luxury SUV, a replacement for the popular SRX model.

The XT5 will be the cornerstone in a new series of crossovers in the brand’s ongoing expansion. The crossovers will wear the “XT” designation in Cadillac’s new naming system.

This is a completely new vehicle, built on a unique chassis and structure and should be Cadillac’s best-selling model as midsize luxury SUV sales take off in North America and China.

In the North American market, the 2017 Cadillac XT5 will be powered by the new 3.6-litre V6 engine which debuted earlier this year on the brand’s ATS and CTS sport sedans and is featured on the CT6.

Ford picked Los Angeles to unveil its 2017 Escape compact SUV, the same place where the successful third generation was launched in 2013.

This is a high-growth segment in the auto industry as compact SUVs are about to surpass compact cars in sales in the Canadian market. The Escape Turn to page W2

Set to arrive in showrooms in March, it features a lower roofline, more compact form and signature taillight look.

Volvo concept interior wows the crowd at LA Jim Robinson

Metroland Media LOS ANGELES, CA: The star of the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show wasn’t a car but an interior design concept from Volvo.

Called Concept 26, it blends functionality and autonomous driving in what Volvo says is “a new way of thinking about how luxury autonomous cars will integrate into daily life.”

It is centered on a new seat design that “cradles” the driver whether driving or in autonomous mode.

It combines a multi-way driver’s seat, a tablet interface on the centre console, a foldable tray that comes out of the driver’s side door and a 25-inch flat screen that folds up and out from under the passenger-side dashboard.

Concept 26 provides three modes – Drive, Create and Relax.

Drive is normal driving as we know it.

Create allows the driver to configure the seat, tablet and screen for a variety of activities like reading, working on a project or accessing a full range of media while the car does the driving.

Relax reclines the driver seat and deploys the flat screen to watch or listen to what you want or simply do nothing and watch as the world glides by.

Volvo Concept 26 development was based on the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). It is one of the first Autonomous Drive concepts that is built on a product platform available today.

One of the most enduring nameplates from Mercedes-Benz, the 2017 SL luxury roadster, had its world debut in LA featuring a nine-speed transmission with five drive modes and a convertible top that can be operated at speeds up to 25 mph.

Styling has been much revised with standard LED headlights and two, prominent power domes on the hood.

There will be two main models. The SL450

has a 3.0-litre V6 with 362 hp and 369 lb/ft of torque. The SL550 has a 4.7-litre V8 with 449 hp and 515 lb/ft of torque.

In addition, there are two AMG models starting with the twin turbo AMG SL63 with 5.5-litre V8 producing 577 hp and 664 lb/ft of torque. The AMG SL65 features a 6.0-litre V12 with 621 hp and 738 lb/ft of torque.

Getting its North American debut on the Volkswagen stand was the Golf GTE Sport Concept with a 395 hp plug-in hybrid system for an acceleration time from 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 174 mph.

VW says the design shows how future Golf GT models might develop.

The Beetle Dune coupe and convertible

with 10 mm higher ground clearance are designed as being reminiscent of Baja California dune buggies.

Re-styled to stand out, it features a large centre air inlet and black honeycomb grille in addition to the next generation of VW infotainment systems.

Over at Porsche, the new 911 Targa 4S had its world premiere in LA. BMW had four vehicles making their North American debut, the most interesting of which was the all-new BMW 3 Series eDrive featuring a plug-in hybrid drive system.

It uses an electric motor and the BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine for a

total system output of 248 hp and 310 lb/ft of torque.

The BMW 330e goes from 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds. In everyday driving conditions, a total range of approximately 370 miles is doable. The eDrive technology allows for about 22 miles in all-electric mode and therefore with zero local emissions.

Jaguar Land Rover showed three new vehicles including the Jaguar XE sports sedan and the Jaguar F-Pace performance SUV. LA marked the first North American appearance of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible, which billed as the first premium compact convertible SUV bringing the lineup to three models for 2016.

Hyundai, Kia debut new production models Jim Robinson

Metroland Media LOS ANGELES, CA: A lot is riding on the 2017 Hyundai Elantra, which made its global debut at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Elantra is one of the brand’s alltime best selling models with the new, sixth generation benefitting from a bold aerodynamic design with sophisticated styling, all-new efficient powertrains for enhanced fuel economy, better ride quality and noise insulation and comprehensive safety with class-above features.

Despite being officially a compact car, the Elantra’s interior volume makes it a U.S. EPA mid-size sedan.

Available are premium features like 17-inch alloy wheels, all-new LED door handle approach lights, side mirror LED turn signal indicators and LED taillights with high tech graphics.

Another interesting feature is seats in either cloth or available leather, and padded with SoyFoam, environmentally friendly seating foam.

Despite being officially a compact car, the Elantra’s 110.2 cu. ft. interior volume makes it a U.S. EPA mid-size sedan.

There will be two engines with a standard 2.0-litre Atkinson Cycle inline four-cylinder producing 147 hp and 132 lb/ft of torque.

There is a choice of a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission.

The fourth-generation 2017 Kia Sportage made its North American debut in LA featuring a stiffer structure, new suspension, advanced driver assistance systems and premium materials.

The Sportage is Kia’s longest running nameplate.

The 2017 Sportage is offered in front- or all-wheel-drive, both coupled with a sixspeed Sportmatic transmission. The Dynamax intelligent AWD system is available on every trim and features a 50/50 locking center differential.
