Metroland Media It’s loud, it’s cramped inside, getting in and out requires the flexibility of a gymnast and it only comes with manual steering. But wow is it blast to drive! I’m talking about the 2016 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, an open-top, carbon fibre sports car, handcrafted at a special sub-section of the Maserati factory in Modena, Italy. This is truly a vehicle that takes you back to the days when sports cars were sporty yet simple. And while it has superb exterior looks with a “wow factor” that’s hard to beat, it’s not a sports car like, say, the Jaguar F-Type that has the luxury touches that many upper-crust drivers both appreciate and demand these days. No, this is a go-kart on steroids that is aimed squarely at the driving enthusiasts amongst us. The 4C Spider, and its sibling the 4C Coupe, are sports cars to the core. They may very well be the least practical cars on the market today, but boy can they deliver fun for weekend runs into the country or for those who enjoy track days with their high-performance toys. After a nearly 20 year absence, the Italian automaker Alfa Romeo is making a push back into the North American market with the 4C models and a handful of other vehicle offerings. The dealer network is limited,

however, with three in Ontario and a couple each in British Columbia and Quebec. Our test vehicle, the 4C Spider is a transverse-mounted mid-engine two-seat roadster, powered by a turbocharged all-aluminum 1.75-litre inline four-cylinder engine, making 237 hp and 258 lb/ft of torque. A six-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission delivers power

to the rear wheels. Those power numbers may seem relatively miniscule when compared with some of the supercars out there today that boast 600700 hp, but it’s all about the weight with the 4C Spider that tips the scales at just 1,128 kg (2,487 lb). Every component comes with weight and balance in mind. The latest in high-tech materials are

used. In fact, the monocoque is a single carbon-fibre body, while the front and rear frames are built with light weight aluminum and the outer body shell is Sheet Moulded Compound, said to be 20 per cent lighter but more stable than steel, and also corrosion resistant. OJAI, CA: Prime real estate, prime rib and Optimus Prime, all the best in their fields. Toyota hopes to add a fourth name to that list when it launches the Prius Prime in the spring of 2017. The Prius Prime is Toyota’s most advanced plug-in hybrid. Noting it is more than a name change, Toyota Canada vice president Stephen Beatty said the new Prius is “the most fuel-efficient vehicle,” using 1.9 litres of gas per 100 kilometres, a number Toyota says is 12 per cent better than Chevrolet’s Volt and 22 per cent better than the Prius Plug-In. With an electric range of 35 kilometres, Beatty says the new Prime will meet the driving needs of 75 per cent of the Canadian driving public. The car can travel 965 kilometres on a full tank and a full charge in hybrid mode. But why just talk about the car? Toyota invited a group of Canadian automotive journalists to Ojai, CA, to test drive its new vehicle. Toyota couldn’t have chosen a better location as it looked like every 10th car on the road in California is a Prius. Even the cabbies happily drive around in their Prius. And if a Prius wasn’t in front of you, the other electric vehicle on the road is a Tesla. For Canadian families who are looking to help the environment in comfort and style without having to rob a bank, the Tesla is probably out of their price range. I had the opportunity to drive the Prius Prime Technology. Toyota also offers the Prius Prime. The first thing you notice when you step into this car is the enormous 11.6-inch display screen. What a sports car was meant to be Continued from W1 way back in 1910 and over the years the Italian automaker has made a name for itself on the racetrack, winning five world championships along with 17 European championships. That racing heritage is evident in 4C Spider of today that will do the 0-100 km/h run in a spirited 4.1 seconds in race mode with a top speed of 258 km/h. Those are pretty good numbers from an engine with only 237 hp, but that performance and the handling prowess of the 4C Spider are what the car is really all about. It’s certainly not about practicality… in fact getting in and out is an art best left to a contortionist. To get in you have to step over an elevated doorsill, twist your body around and sort of fall into the seat, all the while trying to get your left leg bent enough to squeeze it through the door opening. The seating position itself leaves you feeling like you’re sitting on the ground, or at least a go-kart seat. From a practical standpoint, there is a small, and I mean small, trunk in behind the engine. However, if you take the soft convertible roof off and place it in the trunk, that’s pretty well it as far as cargo space is concerned. But even at that size, the screen looks like it is just another part of the car, which says a lot about how Toyota designed this vehicle. Inside, the Prime Technology features integrated satellite radio, 10 speakers, advanced voice recognition and numerous other features. But the star of the show is the screen. It shows you exactly how the car is performing, where the energy is being produced and how well you are driving. Our first short trip featured a drive with just the electric motor powering the car. It had great response time when you hit the accelerator and never missed a beat keeping up with traffic. Because of the silence due to the electric motor, the cabin can be noisy particularly from the tires. After using the battery, a longer trip allowed my co-driver and I the chance to see how the gas motor worked. Needless to say, the car performed admirably. At one point, the screen informed us we were getting 1.4L/100 km (199 mpg). The Prius handled all the curves going up and down the hills surrounding Los Angeles. The year 1966 brought the TV debuts of “Batman” and “Star Trek,” which both enjoy a cult like following 50 years later. With less fanfare in the same season, General Motors tested the Electrovan, the world’s first hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle. Floyd Wyczalek, 91, was project manager of Electrovan fuel cell development and recalls the 200-person team working on the first technology transfer of fuel cells from President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 challenge to NASA to safely land a man on the moon before the end of the decade. “We had three shifts of people on this project starting in January 1966 and finishing 10 months later,” Wyczalek said. “We had one running demo for the Progress of Power press conference in October that year.” Fast-forward to 2016 and GM has invested more than (US) $2.5 billion in hydrogen fuel cell technology and is among patent leaders along with Honda. GM and Honda have been working since 2013 in developing a next-generation system that will be much more powerful but a fraction of the size of the equipment-crammed Electrovan, which had room for only a driver and two passengers. Several fuel cell demo programs have helped GM amass close to five million kilometres of real-world experience on modern fuel cell systems. On Oct. 3 at the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) annual meeting and exhibition in Washington, D.C., GM revealed its latest fuel cell demo, the Chevrolet Colorado ZH,

an off-road midsize pickup that the Army will test in extreme conditions next year. Coincidentally, the ZH went from contract to completion in about 10 months, the same timing as the Electrovan. It will be the first fuel cell vehicle to wear the GM Hydrotec badge, a familial tie to the Ecotec gasoline engines. Following the end of the project the Electrovan was stored in a Pontiac, Michigan, warehouse for 31 years before being rediscovered in 2001 and assigned for use in fuel cell displays and loaned to museums when not at home in the GM Heritage Center. F1 test driver visits Infiniti Canada On Oct. 5, Canada Infiniti Canada welcomed Canadian Renault Sport Formula One test driver Nicholas Latifi to its headquarters in Mississauga. It was a meet-and-greet with employees, signaling a new partnership in Canada between the up-and-coming driver and the luxury brand. Latifi, 21, was announced as a new test driver for the Renault Sport Formula One Team earlier this year after showing impressive speed during GP2 testing with DAMS and he has now embarked on a long-term development program with Renault Sport Racing.
