Metroland Media Honda Canada celebrated a global milestone Tuesday (Oct 20) as the first 2016 Civic rolled off its Alliston, ON, assembly plant.

It marked the first time in Honda’s history that a new model has been launched outside of Japan.

As the global lead plant, Alliston not only launched production around the world but it is also responsible for developing the processes and tooling that will form the manufacturing base at all Honda plants globally that will build the tenth-generation Civic model.

The Civic sedan is the first in a series of new tenth-generation models that will also include a coupe, high-performance Si models, a five-door hatchback and the first-ever Civic Type-R model for the Canadian market.

All Civic sedans and coupes sold in Canada will be built at Alliston.

The “first off” ceremony follows the announcement almost a year ago that the plant will see an $857 million investment in processes and technology over the next three years.

The best-selling car in Canada for the past 17 years, more than 4.5 million Civics have been produced in Alliston, some 1.89 million sold in Canada alone.

There’s been no shortage of news about diesel engines lately.

And little of it good.

But let’s set aside VW’s woes for a moment and consider that diesel still has a positive story to tell, be it about fuel economy or performance.

For starters, this fuel is more energy dense than gasoline, and because of how it’s delivered to each cylinder – injected after, not with the air – it can achieve higher compressions.

Which means diesel will produce more work from the same amount of fuel, not to mention loads more torque from the same displacement. Particularly with a turbo, where this added grunt comes in at lower rpms.

On all counts, this is a huge advantage for gas-sucking work trucks that need tow or haul. It’s also ideal for European commuters, where the rate at the pumps can be two bucks a litre and more.

And although Americans haven’t yet embraced diesel, Canadians are more partial.

Now in its tenth generation, the 2016 Civic has been dramatically restyled and for the first time will offer two engines including HonWe’ve been looking longingly da’s first turbo. across the pond at the vast selection of Euro models. But that being said, will diesel resonate with those of us buying $100K-plus luxury SUVs? My current tester, the 2016 Range Rover Td6 HSE, should test these waters.

Powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel engine, it is expected to achieve 32 per cent better fuel economy than its V6 gas sibling. My own result was 9.8 L/100 km, rivalling the 25 mpg combined city/hwy fuel economy on the US spec sheet. Canadian figures were unavailable at time of writing.

Massage seats reduce stress of morning commute Continued from W1 The company has put much thought into engine design, with the block made of compacted graphite iron – lighter and stronger than regular cast iron and aluminum. Other tweaks include a low-pressure EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system, two-stage oil pump (to reduce engine losses) and revised fuel injectors.

Emissions are cleaned up with an exhaust-scrubbing system that employs “diesel exhaust fluid” (DEF) to reduce NOx and turn it into harmless nitrogen gas.

The DEF reservoir is under that hood and should hold enough fluid for about 10,000 miles (16,000 km).

Such eco friendliness won’t go unnoticed

by Range Rover’s well-heeled buyers, as long

as performance is up to scratch.

And it is.

The Td6’s 3.0-litre mill delivers 254 hp, and more importantly, 440 lb/ft of torque coming in at a low 1,750 rpm. That is a big increase over the gas burner that produces its 332 lb/ft at 3,500 rpm.

This makes the Td6 ideal for towing and off roading where ample torque in needed in lower gears.

It also allows this bulky SUV to move briskly off the line – especially in ‘sport’ mode – with the eight-speed automatic firing off gears smoothly and without pause.

Zero to 60 mph takes only 7.4 seconds, which nearly matches the supercharged gas V6 model.

Of course, the 510-hp, supercharged V8 is quicker (0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds), but purchasing a Range Rover is not about how swiftly you arrive at a destination.

It’s about the craftsmanship, comfort and brand cachet that has built a clientele that includes both celebs and Royals.

My tester’s interior was smartly appointed in two-tone beige and charcoal – looking very modern and with a minimum of switchgear. The eight-inch infotainment screen takes care of audio, climate, phone, navigation and vehicle settings, although a set of knobs and switches below control HVAC and the heated/cooled front seats.

On that note, the front seats also include a massage function with settings for intensity and for targeting specific areas of your back. Perfect – with the heat – for those early morning commutes.

Back seat occupants as well needn’t be shortchanged on amenities.

The latter setting, which requires the low range on its standard two-speed transfer case, can take you through some gnarly terrain. I, however, kept this $126K vehicle ($108,490 plus $17,325 in options) on the asphalt the entire week.

There’s a good chance my technique would pass muster, but this wasn’t the right vehicle to overestimate my off-roading skills.

No doubt the press team at Land Rover was relieved.

Nissan pilots Scoot Quad electric vehicle San Franciscans have a new way to ride around the city with the addition of 10 all-electric Nissan New Mobility Concept vehicles to the Scoot Networks mobility service.

The Nissan New Mobility Concept, also known as a Scoot Quad, is a 100 per cent electric, two-seater compact vehicle with a range of 40 miles and top speed of 25 mph — perfect for driving in urban areas.

The Scoot Quad joins the Scoot family of light electric vehicles — including a classic electric moped and a larger cargo outfit — and it is Scoot’s first foray on four wheels.

The Scoot fleet is currently comprised of 400 customized electric scooters that go up to 30 mph and have a range of 20 to 25 miles. San Francisco residents use Scoots for a variety of activities such as quick commutes across town, running errands or as a fun

way to explore the city.

Nissan has been making electric vehicles available to the mass market for nearly five years.

Cadillac gets leaner with fuel-saving tech As the 2016 model year production begins, Cadillac is adding new fuel-saving technologies.

Active Fuel Management and Automatic Stop/Start technologies, and widespread use of a new eight-speed transmission, are combining to raise fuel economy ratings and reduce emissions in Cadillac’s portfolio.

Cadillac’s all-new six-cylinder engine contains Active Fuel Management, or cylinder deactivation, technology enabling it to seamlessly switch from six-cylinder to four-cylinder operation under certain lightload conditions, while maintaining excellent performance.

The new 3.6-litre engine is part of the 2016 ATS, CTS and Escalade product lines.

The luxury SUV’s V8 will shift to four-cylinder operation in many daily driving conditions, as will Cadillac’s all-new high performance CTS-V sedan.

Cadillac’s advanced engine technology

will accelerate in the new Twin Turbo-powered CT6 prestige sedan, which will be the world’s only six-cylinder engine to combine turbocharging with cylinder deactivation and Stop/Start technology.

Cadillac’s ATS and CTS also offer a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the most popular choice among buyers. These models also see fuel economy improvements in 2016 via the use of Automatic Start/Stop, or AutoStop, technology.

This system reduces emissions and fuel consumption by automatically turning off the engine when the car is stationary, such as at red light.

Five ‘green car’ finalists announced Green Car Journal has announced its five finalists for the magazine’s 2016 Green Car of the Year award during the LA Auto Show next month.

2016 Tacoma at home on and off road Jim Robinson

Metroland Media SEATTLE, WA: Buried in sand up to the axles, I watched in amazement as the 2016 Toyota Tacoma literally dug itself out.

It was using Toyota’s new Multi Terrain Select (MTS) with computers, engine and advanced traction control doing the job automatically. All the driver had to do was steer.

MTS sets a new level of “go anywhere” ability, and not in a dedicated off-road SUV, but in a mid-size pickup truck.

Mike Sweers is the chief engineer on the new Tacoma. His wife, daughter and he all drive Toyota pickups and he said his family and customers value “knowing they can get there and get back.”

If there is one thing I have learned over the years about going off-road, it’s to avoid sand at all costs.

I will always remember one of Canada’s most respected autowriters parking an SUV from another Japanese maker out on the beachfront of a Pacific Coast hotel where we were staying to get some dramatic, end-ofthe-day photos.

Problem was, he drove onto wet sand, and as he got out and lifted his camera, the truck sunk down to the axles as the tide started to roll in.

Frantic calls for help finally resulted in the SUV being extricated just as the waves started lapping at the rocker panels.

With MTS, that probably wouldn’t have happened.

The system is centred on a panel above the windshield with a “MTS” button on the left, a “Crawl” button on the right and a five

position rotary knob in the centre which governs degrees of power delivery.

Press MTS and a 4.2-inch TFT display in the main gauge cluster offers a choice of Mud & Sand, Loose Rock, Mogul, Rock & Dirt and Rock.

There is also a dial with the choice of 2WD, 4H and then 4Lo, which calls for a shift into neutral before engaging.

And then there is Crawl, which is astounding.

At a dedicated off-road park east of Seattle where the press launch of the Tacoma was held, there were places dubbed Double Drop, Devil’s Boneyard and Rocky Top, but there was one path with a 41 per cent incline.

With the truck in Crawl and the rotary knob on position two, we were told to touch neither brake nor gas and let the Tacoma do the thinking and doing.

Ascending was like looking straight up to heaven with no visible objects like trees or rocks to get a bearing, just an instructor shouting to turn left or right.

Then there was coming down, which looked like a solid wall directly below.

Everything in my being said don’t do this, and I confess, I let my co-driver take over because I was just too scared.

Needless to say the truck did it, actually about four times for the video people, but it demonstrated abilities far beyond my own.

When the 2016 Tacoma arrives in the fall, it will have two engines, starting with the well-known 2.7-litre, inline four-cylinder with 159 hp and 180 lb/ft of torque.

By far the most important engine is a new 3.5-litre V6 (278 hp, 265 lb/ft) that can run on either Atkinson Cycle or Otto Cycle.

efficient on gasoline. But, when more power is needed, it switches seamlessly to the more traditional Otto Cycle.

Fuel consumption ratings and pricing had not been released at this writing.

There are two cab versions – Access and Double. There is no Regular cab model.

While there are eight powertrain versions, the only 4x2 version is the base with 2.7-litre with five-speed manual transmission. The rest are all 4X4 with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions.

And to add to the confusion there are five Access and three Double Cab models.

Toyota Canada expects 74 per cent of sales will be the V6 Double Cab 4X4.

Towing is up to 6,500 lb with a payload of up to 1,620 lb. The bed is composite with

numerous tie-down options, plus a 120-volt grounded power outlet at the right rear of the bed.

There are now eight exterior colours. The interior is much changed including a new instrument panel with an elongated lozenge shape that houses a large infotainment screen.

Toyota engineers spent a lot of time on aerodynamics to help with fuel economy and managed to reduce overall drag by 12 per cent under the outgoing model.
