welcome A smile awaits us. We are home. Unpack; relish the little niceties of life such as freshly cut flowers all over the house, chairs on the terrace, and the water of the swimming pool heated to perfection. A dip in that pool, a game of tennis, a round of golf, whatever takes our fancy, but always surrounded by nature at its most magnificent. Now for a well deserved Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, or Sauna perfectly complementing a vigorous session in the gym.

flavour First read the chef's suggestions. Couldn't be simpler! Before long, the exotic and sophisticated dishes start to appear. Time is of no consequence when it comes to the finer things in life. Caviar, truffles, wild mushrooms, prawns. Perfection. Outside, tones of saffron, avocado and passion fruit in the form of flowers beckon. Go for a wander. The air suggests turning back. Possibly for a cup of tea accompanied by a slice of homemade cake, a pastry that melts in the mouth or a hot scone oozing with butter. Tea is not just served at 5, but at any hour where there is a demand for a moment to be savoured.

roots Time passes soundlessly for them. Witnesses to centuries past, the Quintas da Madeira guard the secrets and history of those who gave them life and name. Aristocratic families found themselves in Madeira, the place where dreams become reality. Ocean and breathtaking landscape as far as the eye can see. Centenarian trees and a house with the elegance of a palace, was all that was required for them to have the feeling of being at home.

earth Whilst sitting underneath a tree, the desire to compose an ode to its beauty is born. The splendour of the landscape is the natural result of so little being written about the history of the Quintas da Madeira. The profusion of scents that fill the air around them inspires a different type of registration, more poetic. Amongst the greenery, fragments of sea show us from whence the plants and flowers came, thus making Madeira what it is today. In some of the Quintas, collections of plants from all over the world may be found. In spite of being irresistible, their scent does not transport us to those far distant lands. Paradise is here.

Casa Velha do Palheiro Casa Velha do Palheiro started off both as a hunting lodge and summer residence in 1804, its first owner being Jo達o Esmeraldo, the first Count of Carvalhal. Originally, the Count imported a wide variety of trees from all over the world and it's taken for true that many species of rare trees were given to him as gifts from ships' captains and from King D. Jo達o the 6th himself. At a later period, in 1885, the estate was bought by John Burden Blandy and it has since remained in the family. Restoration works in Casa Velha began in 1995 and it was established as a country house hotel in 1997. Hospitality and personalized service to the need of each guest define the heart of Casa Velha do Palheiro. Part of Tea House, beautifully located between the famous Palheiro Gardens and the renowned Madeira's greens of Palheiro Golf, arrangements can be made for coastal cruises or big game fishing trips on Casa Velha's Motor Yatch "Balancal".

Upon arrival the view couldn't be more inspiring. Vineyards orderly take over the grounds and make known the typical different stocks producers of Madeira wine. At Quinta do Fur達o grape-gathering is still done as in the old days, and September guests are welcome to participate in the traditional gathering and pressing of grapes. Paths outlined in the gardens lead us to the main house, a magnificent building lodging a restaurant, a pub, a wine-cellar and an handicrafts shop where embroidery made in Madeira can be bought. There is enough amusement available at Quinta do Fur達o but it's within the silence of the hotel that best pleasures are relished, like having a good cup of tea and scones, playing billiards or admiring the scenery stretching out of sight beyond the vineyards.
