West Virginia Camp Case

As you can imagine, the more kids we reach, the more camp opportunities we must be prepared to provide.

Dear Friend, As you may know, Young Life is engaged in an intentional plan to reach two million kids by 2016 that we call “Reaching a World of Kids.” We’re on the move mobilizing more than 80,000 volunteers and establishing 8,000 ministry locations. Most exciting, each year we continue to reach more and more kids as planned; we’ve experienced a surge of volunteerism as well. As you can imagine, the more kids we reach, the more camp opportunities we must be prepared to provide. Our Reaching a World of Kids campaign also asserts that Young Life be positioned and prepared. With the establishment of the West Virginia camp property, we are well positioned to make a camping presence in West Virginia, which will provide high impact in neighboring areas and states. And now we are prepared to build a world-class camp for middle and high school-aged kids to experience a Young Life camp distinctively designed for them. I hope you will join us as we work to vitalize this wonderful gem into our next camping destination for every kid. In Christ,

Denny Rydberg

Wild West Virginia Situated near the cliffs of Gauley Canyon, the banks of Summersville Lake and surrounded by the Gauley River, the proposed West Virginia camp is a world-class camp just waiting to happen — a place where thousands of kids will someday hear the Gospel and experience one of the best weeks of their lives. Right now, the proposed West Virginia camp is a plot of land in beautiful southeastern West Virginia. But what the proposed camp could be is extraordinary! A vital addition to Young Life’s portfolio of premier camp properties, the proposed West Virginia camp is positioned to be an ideal camping presence in the right place at the right time. As Young Life continues to experience steady growth, the number of kids attending camp is increasing. In many cases, we’re at more than 100 percent capacity. It’s a great problem … kids clamoring for the opportunity to get away from the pressures of adolescence and experience joy and a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ. So, we need to respond by providing a place for them. And now, more than ever, we’re confident that West Virginia is that place.

[Camp] was fun, but most of all it had some very good lessons. I learned to love, forgive and open my eyes to so much more important things. I went to camp with a heavy heart and came back with an open and loving heart. … I found God in the process of it all.

BURSTING AT THE SEAMS All of the current camps that kids in the West Virginia region are attending — Rockbridge, Lake Champion, Saranac and Timber Wolf Lake — are bursting at the seams with more than 100 percent occupancy.

Wonderful Location The proposed West Virginia camp is: Ideally located. Situated in a popular recreational area, the West Virginia camp is a natural match with Young Life’s intentional use of adventure, thrill, beauty and play in the camp experience.

Strategically located. A vital addition to the Young Life camping presence in the eastern region of the U.S., the proposed West Virginia camp will have an impact on ministry in five states including Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.

Closely located. For kids and leaders in our region, distance and drive time to camp will be significantly reduced to just under a couple of hours.

The West Virginia camp will mean so much for kids in our part of the country. Transportation costs for under-resourced communities will be dramatically reduced for summer camp, and we will finally have a quality, cost-effective place for school season camping. There is a great future ahead of use at the West Virginia camp!
