YOUR LOCAL FAMILY MAGAZINE February 2021

Hi & welcome to our February Issue!! Hi everyone! My name is Kate, I'm so excited to introduce myself as the new Editor for your local Your Child magazine! I'll be taking over the reigns from Sam who I would like to personally thank for her amazing contribution over the last five years along with all her help and support getting me started! I wish you all the best for your next exciting chapter! I'm looking forward to providing you with a fun filled magazine full of local activities and inspiration for you and your family! It's so important to shop local where possible particularly after the year we had, a lot of small businesses are getting back on their feet so it can make a world of difference to them and the wider community. I think we can all agree that the sense of community we are so lucky to have here in the Nillumbik and Banyule area helped so many get through last year. I feel truly blessed that I'm able to help everyone stay in touch with what's happening in their local area and be a voice for businesses and the community alike. I hope you all had a fantastic summer holiday with your loved ones and 2021 is getting off to a great start for you! I'm sure for all the Mumma's out there it's been a busy time of year with your kids back to school, starting a new year/term and all the emotions and excitement that go with it! My two little ones started orientation for Kinder and Child care this week so it's been a whirlwind of emotions for us but mostly happy ones! It's definitely a time of new beginnings for my family, I look forward to sharing more with you about them next month when we go back to printed magazines! Inside this issue is heaps of great reading for you and your family with our back to school bumper edition. With a range of topics that provide some helpful tips now that the kids are back learning, including beating the morning blues, after school snack ideas and how to save on lunches! Along with some interesting articles for the little ones on the benefits of playgroup, discovering sports with Ready Steady Go and how to answer the 'why' us parents face on a daily basis! One of my favourites though is how to create a family history with digital photos, how cool is that! I hope you enjoy this online issue as much as I did putting it together with Sam. Be sure to check out this months advertisers for something to do, see or buy for you or someone you love. Discovering Sports for our Younger Ones! Ready Steady Go Kids is a multi-sport program running 7 days a week in your local area. Designed by a paediatric physiotherapist and occupational therapist, the classes are structured to suit 4 different age groups between the ages of 18 months to 6 years old. The program teaches 10 different sports over 2 terms which helps the children develop a broad range of skills and build a platform of sporting knowledge. This also ensures the children remain interested and engaged throughout the entire program. The program not only teaches the children sporting skills but also a range of additional age appropriate skills including exploration, basic counting and colour concepts. Plus it encourages teamwork and sportsmanship, and helps to build social skills, listening skills and concentration. The classes are designed to focus on a specific gross motor hand-eye/foot-eye and/or balance activity to complement the sport component and our program structure is repeated each week so the participants become familiar and comfortable with the routine.

Introduce pre-schoolers to a variety of sports in a structured, safe, inclusive and non-competitive environment. 8

Ÿ

Ÿ

Ÿ Ÿ

Show pre-schoolers that sport and physical activity are fun, thus developing a lifelong passion for exercise. Develop and enhance age-appropriate gross motor skills, coordination and correct posture. Introduce and reinforce the importance of warm ups and stretching to help prevent injuries. Increase each child's confidence. Prepare children for school and participation in the broader community.

Ÿ

All Ready Steady Go Kids classes are held indoors so rain, hail or shine, our classes will still run. All of our coaches are energetic and make each class really fun. The program runs in line with the primary school terms and we offer all new children a FREE TRIAL. Why not book your trial today and see why hundreds of other local children are loving our program each week? For further information and to book your spot for Term 1 please visit:

Out and About

Eltham Copper Buttterfly Playground 570 -576 Main Road ELTHAM This park is also known as the Eltham Lower Park and is located just beyond the Diamond Valley Miniature Railway as an added bonus! The playground is a lovely space for children to roam and explore in a nature type setting that is fully enclosed and gated for added peace of mind with little wanderers! All the boxes were ticked as far as play equipment goes offering 4 swings - 1 with a harness, a bird nest swing, a tunnel slide resting on a little hill that to be climbed up and down, 2 spinners, balance beams to test out balancing skills as well as a large wooden caterpillar and ant sculptures, 3 beautiful butterflies that double as

climbing walls plus atandum flying fox. There’s also a dry creek bed sandpit and tables to collect their treasures & make sand pies plus a water pump that unfortunately wasn’t working the day we visited and the waved mirrors gave us a giggle! Plenty of space to enjoy the area with shaded table and chairs, BBQ facilities and seating dotted around. Fully accessible, clean and modern toilets are located at the entrance. The gardens are well set out and even when we had finished in the playground Ollie continued to explore in the dry rock creek bed outside the playground to the right side of the entrance. A beautiful space to play, explore & enjoy!!

MOTHERS HELPING MOTHERS WITH POSTNATAL DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY Have you previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety? Are you interested in providing support to new mothers at risk of postnatal depression or anxiety? Approximately 1 in 5 of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression and/or anxiety and many do not receive the support they require. To help these new mothers, researchers from the La Trobe University are conducting a study called “DAISY – Depression & AnxIety peer Support studY”. This study consists of experienced mothers who have previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety offering mother-to-mother telephone support to new mothers who are at high-risk to develop postnatal depression or anxiety. We are seeking peer support volunteers who have previously experienced (and recovered from) postnatal depression or anxiety. To become a “peer support volunteer” you will need to attend a 4-hour on-line video training session to learn how to provide telephone support. If you are interested in finding out more information or would like to participate in this new telephone-based support study by becoming a peer volunteer, please contact the DAISY study peer volunteer coordinator: Jessica Bee Email: daisy@latrobe.edu.au Phone: 9479 5428
