Hi & welcome to our April Issue!! As we head into the school holidays and Easter it’s usually the time that we like to visit family interstate. Our kids look forward to spending time with their only cousins and vice versa. The craziness of 8 children under the one roof is never quiet or boring. Add to that an array of animals that my sister and her family have (there is always a new addition) and you can imagine there is never a dull moment! We hope that with the changes happening that we can still go. In the recent month, we have all become familiar with concepts like 'social distancing', 'self-isolation' and 'flattening the curve' – all part of our individual and collective efforts to slow and limit the spread of COVID-19. We all have been doing our best to protect the health and safety of our community and the wider population. There have been some great support from Facebook groups to help elderly neighbours or the disadvantaged - its great to see that we can come together when really needed - sharing food and essential items. I’ve also heard that people are creating WhatsApp or Messenger groups to keep in touch with people in their street or neighbourhood. Remember you can also support local eateries and retails shops by ordering takeout as well as online orders. Be sure to check our Facebook page as we will continue to posted on social media what is happening in and around Banyule & Nillumbik. You can also tag us or send a message if you think there is something that would be useful or informative to our followers So Like us on Instagram and Facebook - Your Child in Banyule and Nillumbik to keep up with all local events and any changes in the community. Also check out Whats on in April on page 29.

Out and About
ELTHAM NORTH ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND Wattletree Road ELTHAM NORTH Like all the families who rate this park amongst their favourites, we were so shocked and saddened when we heard the news of the fire in December 2017. We kept updated with the progress of the rebuild and love the revamped park! (As did our dog Louie - they have a fenced off oval perfect for dogs right in front) When we arrived there was a happy buzz as visitors scampered through the main structure up stairs and down slides, across bridges and along beams. There are climbing rope ladders, tunnels and lookouts. The old tractor wasn’t forgotten with a new shiny replacement located inside. The addition of little shops for endless imaginary play is a welcomed upgrade.
There are swings and a flying fox and the children all seem to know the rules and wait patiently for their turns. A dry creek snakes through the area and a large sand pit shaded by the roof of the structure is another favourite for many busy little people. The area is still spacious and again has picnic areas, covered tables and chairs, BBQ’s and a new toilet facility. We got there early and within a short time the car park, which is ample, was almost full. An added bonus has alway been the direct access to Edendale Farm for a full day of adventure plus can also be used for parking. If you haven’t been yet - I have to ask “What are you waiting for?”

MOTHERS HELPING MOTHERS WITH POSTNATAL DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY Have you previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety? Are you interested in providing support to new mothers at risk of postnatal depression or anxiety? Approximately 1 in 5 of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression and/or anxiety and many do not receive the support they require. To help these new mothers, researchers from the La Trobe University are conducting a study called “DAISY – Depression & AnxIety peer Support studY”. This study consists of experienced mothers who have previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety offering mother-to-mother telephone support to new mothers who are at high-risk to develop postnatal depression or anxiety. We are seeking peer support volunteers who have previously experienced (and recovered from) postnatal depression or anxiety. To become a “peer support volunteer” you will need to attend a 4-hour on-line video training session to learn how to provide telephone support. If you are interested in finding out more information or would like to participate in this new telephone-based support study by becoming a peer volunteer, please contact the DAISY study peer volunteer coordinator: Jessica Bee Email: daisy@latrobe.edu.au Phone: 9479 5428

A Childs’ Her hair was up in a pony tail, Her favorite dress tied with a bow. Today was Daddy's Day at school, And she couldn't wait to go.
‘Where's her daddy at?' She heard a boy call out 'She probably doesn't have one,' Another student dared to shout.
But her mummy tried to tell her, That she probably should stay home. Why the kids might not understand, If she went to school alone.
And from somewhere near the back, She heard a daddy say, 'Looks like another deadbeat dad, too busy to waste his day.'
But she was not afraid; She knew just what to say. What to tell her classmates Of why he wasn't there today.
The words did not offend her, As she smiled up at her Mum. And looked back at her teacher, Who told her to go on.
But still her mother worried, For her to face this day alone. And that was why once again, She tried to keep her daughter home.
And with hands behind her back, Slowly she began to speak. And out from the mouth of a child, Came words incredibly unique.
But the little girl went to school Eager to tell them all. About a dad she never sees A dad who never calls.
My Daddy couldn't be here, Because he lives so far away. But I know he wishes he could be, Since this is such a special day.
There were daddies along the wall in back, For everyone to meet. Children squirming impatiently, Anxious in their seats
And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know. All about my daddy, And how much he loves me so.
One by one the teacher called A student from the class. To introduce their daddy, As seconds slowly passed.
He loved to tell me stories He taught me to ride my bike. He surprised me with pink roses, And taught me to fly a kite.
At last the teacher called her name, Every child turned to stare. Each of them was searching, A man who wasn't there.
We used to share fudge sundaes, And ice cream in a cone. And though you cannot see him. I'm not standing here alone.

Story 'Cause my daddy's always with me, Even though we are apart I know because he told me, He'll forever be in my heart'
And to her mother's amazement, She witnessed with surprise. A room full of daddies and children, All starting to close their eyes.
With that, her little hand reached up, And lay across her chest. Feeling her own heartbeat, Beneath her favorite dress.
Who knows what they saw before them, Who knows what they felt inside. Perhaps for merely a second, They saw him at her side.
From somewhere here in the crowd of dads, Her mother stood in tears. Proudly watching her daughter, Who was wise beyond her years.
I know you're with me Daddy,' To the silence she called out. And what happened next made believers, Of those once filled with doubt.
For she stood up for the love Of a man not in her life. Doing what was best for her, Doing what was right.
Not one in that room could explain it, For each of their eyes had been closed. But there on the desk beside her, Was a fragrant long-stemmed rose.
And when she dropped her hand back down, Staring straight into the crowd. She finished with a voice so soft, But its message clear and loud.
And a child was blessed, if only for a moment, By the love of her shining star. And given the gift of believing
'I love my daddy very much, he's my shining star. And if he could, he'd be here, But heaven's just too far. You see, he was an Aussie soldier And died, just this past year When a roadside bomb hit his convoy And taught Australians to fear. But sometimes when I close my eyes, it's like he never went away.' And then she closed her eyes, And saw him there that day. To advertise in Your Child in Banyule & Nillumbik call 0411 459 872
