FIVE MINUTES WITH Alexa Dretzke, Assistant Manager and Children's Specialist at Readings Hawthorn q How did you become an expert in children's books? It was happenstance as my career was originally in graphic design. I was a customer at The Little Bookroom and one Christmas they were short-staffed: I filled in, stayed for nine years, and my career change was complete. Since then, I've been at Readings Hawthorn for 17 years and children's books continue to give me so much pleasure. I love the joyous colourfulness of picture books and how they can be so many things: works of art, empathetic tales, uproarious nonsense, and strange and compelling mysteries. Middle fiction is a particular favourite of mine for the originality and scope of the narratives. There seems to be less regard for trends and therefore the stories feel fresher and more stimulating. q Is there one book that you can recommend and know that it will always be a hit? How do you choose a suitable book? For picture books, I like to recommend Mr Magnolia by Quentin Blake for its exuberant craziness and rollicking rhyme; it makes life feel exciting. In middle fiction, I particularly love ClareVanderpool's Moon Over Manifest and Navigating Early. She hasn't had a new book out for a while but we live in hope! Young Adult (YA) fiction's Running Man by Michael Gerard Bauer is a story that grips you from the start and then reminds you to get to know people before making judgements that can ruin lives. It surprises many of its young readers with its poignancy and wisdom. The way I recommend books is to establish the child's age, find out what they have recently read and what they liked or didn't like about those books. I'll also ask what their hobbies or interests are, what they usually like to read, and whether they are keen on reading. q What do you think the big books this Christmas will be? Tilly by Jane Godwin and Anna Walker will charm children with a delightful story about a little girl and her secret hiding spot for her treasures. How to Make a Movie in 12 Days by Fiona Hardy is such an original middle-fiction story and is perfectly pitched at the 9–12 age group. The characters are quirky, the dialogue is funny and smart, and it was a joy to read. The second book in Philip Pullman's The Book of Dust series,The Secret Commonwealth, has been keenly awaited and will keep readers occupied for quite a while! q Tell us one surprising thing about your job? That no-one reads the same book, even if they read the same book. q What is your favourite book? Ahh, the dilemma of this question ...The Magus by John Fowles, because it changed my reading life at the time. Readings Hawthorn 701 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn readings.com.au

ASK A VET with Dr Suze November is National Pet Diabetes Month. That's right, the fastest growing chronic disease in Australia that affected 1.7 million Australians and 422 million people worldwide also affects dogs and cats. q What is diabetes? Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterised by elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels. Insulin is the hormone responsible for lowering blood glucose and is produced by a digestive organ called the pancreas. In veterinary medicine DM can be divided into two different types; type 1 DM (insulin dependant diabetes) or type 2 DM (noninsulin dependant diabetes). Type 1 DM - caused by the inability to produce sufficient insulin and is most commonly seen in dogs. Type 2 DM - caused by the body becoming resistant to the effects of insulin or an insufficient production of insulin and is seen most commonly in cats. q How common is diabetes in pets? A five year study published by the University of Queensland demonstrated a prevalence of 7.4 per 1000 cats, the incidence was significantly higher amongst the Burmese cat population. Risk factors include obesity, age (cats over seven appear at higher risk), breed, physical inactivity, gender and some medications. In dogs one study reported a 0.34% incidence with certain breeds such as Caine Terriers and Samoyed breeds over represented. In dogs DM can also occur secondary to other conditions such as pancreatitis, oestrus and Cushing's disease. q What signs should I look out for? The clinical signs of DM, regardless of type are the same: increased thirst, urination and hunger, inappropriate urination, weight loss, lethargy, weakness, poor skin and coat condition. In dogs, cataracts and blindness may also result. q How is diabetes diagnosed? Diagnosis is confirmed by blood and urine testing. q How is diabetes managed in pets? The management solution of both DM type 1 and 2 involves twice daily injections of insulin, consistent meals and exercise. Pets with type 1 DM will required life-long injections however there is an approximately 50% chance of remission for pets with type 2 DM provided early diagnosis and adequate management. Dogs and cats with well controlled diabetes can go on to lead normal lives and have the same life expectancy as non diabetic dogs and cats. The Unicorn in the Barn by Jacqueline Ogburn ISBN 9781328595850 $15.99 This is a glorious novel for children aged 7-10. For years people have claimed to see a mysterious white deer in the woods around Chinaberry Creek. It always gets away. One evening, Eric Harper thinks he spots it, but a deer doesn't have a coat that shimmers like a pearl, and a deer certainly isn't born with an ivory horn curling from its forehead. When Eric discovers the unicorn is hurt and being taken care of by the vet next door and her daughter,Allegra, his life is transformed. A tender tale of love, loss and the connections we make, The Unicorn in the Barn shows us that sometimes ordinary life takes extraordinary turns. There are some echoes of the Harry Potter stories in this novel (care of magical creatures) but without the scary bits - perfect for young children.

Spirit by Sally Christie ISBN 9781910989319 $16.99 Another exceptional novel for a slightly older age group (approx. 9-12). Matt is the new kid at school and is quiet and shy. Jazzy is outspoken, popular and confident. They'd never normally be friends. But things in the village of Burnham Stone aren't normal: Matt has seen something extraordinary up in Burnham Wood. And Jazzy is the only one who believes him. With the help of Matt's little dog and Jazzy's little sister, the two make surprising discoveries - and unleash such a powerful force that nothing can ever be the same again. A wonderful story about friends, growing up, and the very real magic in the world around us.

The Glimme by Emily Rodda and Marc McBride 9781862919570 $34.99 Finn's life in the village of Wichant is hard. Only his drawings of the wild coastline, with its dragon-shaped clouds and headlands that look like giants make him happy. Then the strange housekeeper from a mysterious clifftop mansion sees his talent, buys him for a handful of gold and then reveals to him seven extraordinary paintings. Finn thinks the paintings must be pure fantasy - such amazing scenes and creatures can't be real! But he's wrong. Soon he is going to slip through the veil between worlds and plunge into the wonders and perils of the Glimme.
